Trustees elect Lissimore as board chair BY JASON ROESSLE

Mission Record
The normally ceremonial inaugural school board meeting Tuesday night turned out to be filled with business. Following the oaths of office, rookie trustee Edie Lissimore was elected chair of the board, while fellow political newcomer Jim Taylor was voted into the vice-chair position, both with a 3-2 vote. Lissimore defeated incumbent Carol Hamilton for the job, while Taylor won his contest against Hamilton also, after fellow incumbent Randy Cairns nominated her for both roles. Once the board was officially sworn, Taylor raised his second point of order of the night, noting the adoption of the agenda item was missing from the agenda. Further, he put forward three notices of motion and five motions to be added to the meeting. The notices are regarding policy changes, Taylor explained, and will come back to the public board in the

Woman banned by courts from owning animals BY MONISHA MARTINS Black Press
A Maple Ridge woman who left three horses to starve on a Mission farm has been banned from owning animals forever. Elissa Anne Uberall received the ban and $2,600 earlier this month in Abbotsford Provincial Court after a judge found her guilty on one count of causing an animal to continue to be in distress.
The horses were seized from the Cameron Avenue property by the Maple Ridge branch of the SPCA in May 2009 after a complaint about their condition from a concerned citizen. “They were emaciated simply due to the fact that they were provided with inadequate care and nutrition. They were being starved to death,” said Marcie Moriarty, B.C. SPCA’s general manager for cruelty investigations. The horses spent two months
in the care of the SPCA and were adopted out once healthy. Uberall failed to appear in court on Dec. 2 and a warrant has been issued for her arrest. She still faces another animal cruelty charge as well as criminal charges of uttering threats and assault causing bodily harm for allegedly lashing out at SPCA officers when they returned to conduct a follow-up visit in September 2009. During that visit, SPCA officers
found a dog who was so sick he had to be carried off the property on a stretcher. The dog was eventually euthanized. “She clearly demonstrated by her actions that she has no business owning animals and the court has recognized that,” said Moriarty. Uberall has a year to pay the $,2600 fine and can request a review of the lifetime ban on owning animals after three years.

All the motions eventually passed, with only the layoff and discipline reports being approved unanimously. Passion for community still strong BY ADRIAN MACNAIR Mission Record
I
n speaking to former mayor James Atebe about his 12 years on Mission’s council one thing becomes immediately clear — this is a man consumed with a passion for his community. “Serving in public office is a privilege that is only given by the people and a privilege that always will be taken away by the people,” he said. The 53-year-old father of four and grandfather of four has more than 27 years of experience in municipal planning and politics, receiving his master’s degree in city planning from the University of Calgary after moving to Canada from Kenya as a teenager. “When I came here at 19 years old to pursue my post-secondary, I never dreamt I’d become a leader in a community.” Atebe was just 20 when he roomed with now-prime minister Stephen Harper. The two have led different career paths, but Atebe says they both had similar ambitions to contribute to society and public policy. When he first ran for office in 1999, his motivations were modest. As a soccer coach and referee, he felt the community’s sports services lagged surrounding areas and Mission children were embarrassed by that. Since then, Mission has built the Sports Park, Leisure Centre and youth facilities, something that makes Atebe proud. In fact, he can’t help but rush breathlessly through the changes he’s overseen in Mission, his excitement clearly tempered by the disappointment of not being any longer at the district’s helm. One of Atebe’s great-

est dreams for Mission — downtown revitalization and the waterfront development — is only in the beginning stages. “This initiative had been talked about for many decades but no previous municipal government made a commitment of resources to plan it.” He said no single developer could manage something of this magnitude, and that it requires a coordinated effort with
government. “I feel that’s a legacy that, if it’s properly done, will be for decades and generations a destination in the Lower Mainland.” As a city planner, Atebe said he looks at a community’s well-being from four pillars of sustainability: environmental, economic and social development, and the preservation and promotion of heritage and culture.
“My original intent was to try to facilitate the community, and lead the community towards what I call a complete community,” which Atebe described as giving residents a single place where they can live, work, shop and go to school. Bringing a Wal-Mart to Mission recently was one part of that plan, by keeping consumers spending money here instead of Abbotsford.
Atebe says he couldn’t have done the things he did without the will of the people, and the integrity of council and municipal workers. “Those are the people who made these achievements and accomplishments possible.” But Atebe’s political life hasn’t been a bed of roses, and he blames his recent electoral loss on the Public Inspection Safety Team that fined
residents for suspected marijuana grow-ops. “It’s unfortunate that it led to my undoing, it became the biggest issue in the election, but it’s a program that’s working,” he said, adding it was misrepresented in the media. “If they want communities to have safe neighbourhoods, nobody wants a grow operation next door.” Nevertheless, Atebe is proud of his time in office and says his accomplishments were the democratic will of the people. “Achievements can’t come unless someone sees something special in you.” Atebe says he was a kid who came from humble beginnings. He grew up with four brothers and four sisters in the village of Ekerenyo, Kenya. His father, Livingstone Atebe Marita, was a Kenyan MP for many years, and had a great influence on his views. “I am very proud of my roots. I feel very fortunate because I have two homes.” Canada is a very generous country in that affords the privilege to put a career on hold to serve the community, he added. So, what does the future hold? Atebe says he never plans ahead in his political ambitions. He ran for municipal politics for specific reasons and would need similar inspiration if he considered provincial or federal office. Those thoughts haven’t crossed his mind. “I enjoyed planning and I still have a passion for that profession,” he said, adding he may consider continuing that career. For now, his hectic pace has slowed, and he’s going to take some time to enjoy the Christmas season with family and friends.
Skills Centre partners with other groups A co-operative in the Fraser Valley has won a provincial contract to provide employment opportunities for Mission, Agassiz and Hope residents. The Fraser Valley Employment and Sup-
port Services Co-operative will operate the program out of WorkBC Employment Services centres beginning in April. The co-op is made up of Mission Community Skills Centre Society,
Chilliwack’s Win Resources Inc., AgassizHarrison Community Services Society and Hope’s Free Rein Associates Training Ltd. “We are very pleased that we have been chosen to provide employ-
ability services in these communities,” said co-op chairman Klaus Werner. “It has been a significant undertaking with lots of support from our staffs and community partners.” Werner said the new
employment program will be a one-stop centre that will make services easily accessible for both job seekers and employers in the region. “I expect it will be very beneficial for the
community of Mission,” he said. “People will be able to access the services they need right here in town.” The new employment program of British Columbia will officially launch in April 2012.
Pilot being sued One of the pilots involved in a midair collision east of Mission last February where two people died is being sued. Patti Hubble’s husband Donn died when his plane and Paul Knapp’s touched wings while formation flying, sending his aircraft into the Dewdney slough. Surrey’s Patrick Lobsinger, who was flying with Hubble, died on scene, while Hubble passed away a short time later in hospital. Knapp made an unscheduled landing in a farmers’ field a short distance from the slough. The civil claim against Knapp, filed in the Supreme Court of B.C. Dec. 7, alleges he was negligent, and this caused or contributed to the collision.

Ground has broken, and work has been progressing on the new food bank building at St. Joseph’s Church. According to Mission accountant Ron Leger, one of the main project organizers, there is approximately $156,000 left to raise — already $436,000 has been received in cash and inkind donations. One of the biggest helps so far has been the efforts of contractor Wentworth Bjarnason. “He is the largest con-
tributor besides the Catholic church,” said Leger. Bjarnason is an Agassiz resident, but St. Joseph’s was his grandmother’s church. “After the phone call [from Leger], I jumped right in. It’s a good thing for the town. You never know when people are going to have a down time,” he explained. “[The food bank] provides an extra safety net.” Bjarnason also put out a challenge to other local contractors to donate as much as they’re able to bring this project to fruition.
St. Joseph’s Church has operated a food bank out of the basement of the Seventh Avenue church for about 15 years, but demand has grown to the point where the food bank needs a free standing building of its own. The structure will be a two-storey building, designed to look like a small church, with 1,860 square feet on each floor. The new building will have an overhang in the front, to shelter the crowds that form. There will be a loading dock with a pallet jack and a conveyer belt system to
move the food indoors, where it is sorted. That will make life a lot easier for the food bank workers. There will be a pickup area with shelving that will also make pickup faster for food bank patrons. Food bank coordinator Patrick Carey said it started “very small and very simple,” with about 30 clients per month. These days, they serve 10 times that number. They are open two days a month for distribution, but volunteers are there working seven days a week to prepare for those days.

NDP on a roll The BC NDP is on a roll. The party is comfortably ahead of the BC Liberals in the polls, and it was in a celebratory mood as it marked its 50th anniversary. Unlike many parties where a former leader has quit as a result of backroom squabbles, the decision a year ago of former leader Carole James to quit opened the door to revitalization of the party. James has remained part of the provincial NDP team and plans to run in the next election. New party leader Adrian Dix has been firmly in command of the party since taking over in April, and as much as is possible within any caucus, the party appears to be united and focused on winning the next election, which is a very real possibility. The NDP have had help, of course. The emergence of the BC Conservatives under a seasoned political pro, John Cummins, has drained support from the Liberals and made it quite likely that the NDP will benefit in the next election. With the chance of an NDP government, the party will have to start answering some questions. While a detailed party platform won’t be released any time soon, it needs to come out long before the next election campaign, which will begin in April, 2013. B.C. residents need to know where the party stands on a wide variety of issues, from job creation to taxes. One of the most important issues that the NDP must take a stance on is public sector union contracts. The party is deeply connected to organized labour, which is increasingly dominated by public sector unions. These unions and their members have it pretty good. They need to accept their privileged position and not ask for wage or benefit increases until the economy improves. Many taxpayers are hurting and are unable to absorb higher costs. The NDP must signal its ability to be a government free of union domination. - Langley Times

Justice system’s weak third leg A ttorney General Shirley Bond is coming off another busy week, announcing new sheriff and clerk training for B.C.’s constipated court system. Then Bond joined Premier Christy Clark to introduce B.C. to another kind of sheriff, the former Los Angeles district attorney best known for busting up one of the biggest nests of crooked cops in U.S. history. Richard Rosenthal went on to clean house as independent monitor of police forces in Portland and Denver, and now he takes on B.C.’s troubled police patchwork, which has been losing the public’s confidence along with the courts. Bond’s other ministry, Public Safety and Solicitor General, announced its senior officials had selected the next commanding officer for the RCMP in B.C. It is unprecedented for a province to do that, but as B.C. gets ready to sign a new 20-year contract with the federal force, Bond and Clark are trying to demonstrate that they, not Ottawa, are now wearing the pants in this re-

Barrett was a social worker at the old Haney Correctional Institution. By 1970 he was Opposition leader, demanding that the W.A.C. Bennett government shut down Haney, by then notorious for trades training that prisoners weren’t locked up long enough to finish. Each inmate was costing B.C. more than $4,000 a year, a huge sum wasted, Barrett thundered in the legislature. Today, Doyle calculates B.C. jails cost $71,000 per inmate per year, or $194 a day. Community supervision spending works out to $7 a day. Tom Fletcher is legislative reporter and columnist for Black Press and BCLocalnews.com tfletcher@blackpress.ca

YOUR VIEWS Pattern Mission waterfront after Vancouver’s Stanley Park Editor, The Record: Firstly, congratulations to newly elected Mayor Ted Adlem and council. It clearly demonstrated the general population of Mission was dissatisfied on various issues during the last few years. I’d like to comment on a couple of items. It seemed that previous councils lost sight of the fact they should concern themselves with providing the best possible results from the use of tax monies, in particular, for basics. There were many wasted dollars — some very noticeable and some not — which really annnoyed residents. Probably the most mentioned subject was the ongoing property tax increases every year, which made a signifi-
cant impact on people’s ability to live a good lifestyle. Those increases were far in excess of the official cost of living figure. If — as the new mayor and councillors promised — they intend to keep their pledge, taxes should decline due to more effective management. Secondly, the other major concern is the environment versus development, and in particular, the ongoing suggestion that the waterfront should be developed, notwithstanding it is officially documented as a flood plain from the Fraser’s edge up to the lower side of First Avenue. Also mentioned again is the McBarge project, involving bringing a discarded, rusting vessel into
the water just below First Avenue. Along with this, it is difficult to understand the name of Sturgeons on the Fraser. Surely we should be more concerned with sturgeon IN the river, as I understand this rare species is negatively impacted by changes to water levels and impurities. If we decide to allow the barge, surely its location should be higher up, on ground above the river’s edge, on cement supports and dike improvements. Patrons seated in such an establishment would have a wonderful view across the river and not be jostled and swayed by river currents as they eat lunch. The idea of developing the waterfront flood plain with townhouses,
B SALOON (Bellevue Hotel)
THE BIG
etc. should be discarded and such buildings should be higher up, where their views would still be spectacular. The district should consider the waterfront to be naturally suited for a large, beautiful park, somewhat similar to Vancouver’s Stanley Park. Walking paths and small trees could line a wide path along the river’s edge behind higher dikes, and be a short stroll to all the First Avenue shops. The Fraser River is vital to many creatures in addition to sturgeon and salmon, as well as to humans, and we should be cognizant of that fact when developments are suggested. Lila Rauh Mission

Run Mission more like a business Editor, The Record: It shouldn’t be that difficult to improve on the previous tax and spend council. Obviously, the previous council lost control of staff as evidenced by the out-of-control spending involving the Cedar Street Gaudin Creek realignment project. I don’t doubt the previous councillors wanted the best for Mission, however, their naiveté and lack of business acumen proved costly to the taxpayers. I don’t want to seem like I’m piling on but a few examples the new council
can learn from: 1. the outrageous CUPE contract signed during recessionary times has hamstrung Mission for years to come; 2. the spending of thousands of dollars on the infamous bike route stamps and signage; 3. the well-meaning but ill-thought out off-leash dog park. By not listening to the public concerns, costs escalated dramatically, as often does when the bureaucracy gets involved. The park targeted for the off-leash was already being used for this

activity at no cost and few liabilities for the taxpayers. Now we have an attractive fence that dogs can jump over and go under; 4. whose idea was it to plant grass on the median on Cedar Street? The unintended (I hope) results of having lane closures and/or flag persons, citing safety for mowers, is costly. We very rarely see staff or council being held ac-
countable for mismanagement. However, this time at least most of the council received consequences. Mission should be run more like a business including environmental and social responsibilities. Businesses are accountable to the shareholders and in this case the shareholders are the taxpayers of Mission. T.B. Mortimer Mission

Council approves more land BUYING dedicated for local cemetery OR SELLING Council voted Monday to designate 3.43 ha (8.47 acres) at the Mission cemetery for future expansion that would utilize about 60 per cent of the parcel. The land, at 34890 Cemetery Ave., is expected to provide about 10-15 years of space based on the current rate of internment in the district, read the municipal report. A cemetery reserve fund was created last year with annual contributions being made for expansion and development plans. So far, $25,000 has been approved for a business plan in 2012 and $170,000 for a develop-
ment plan for 2018.
district to simply connect the infrastructure to the washrooms for $4,000. An additional, gendersegregated, washroom unit with sinks would cost $22,000.
Hatzic Park washrooms Hatzic Park washrooms won’t be connected to sewer and water services until at least 2013, following a council vote to have staff consider including the $26,000 in the 2013 capital budget. Currently, improvements to the washrooms remain on the unfunded projects list, which is why they have continued to be omitted from previous planned budgets. It is expected the Hatzic Ridge housing development will bring water and sewer services to the area, which will allow the
Policy change Former Coun. Mike Scudder asked council during question period if there has been a policy change following a public hearing Monday night in which Mayor Ted Adlem did not formally ask any councillors if they had questions. Adlem confirmed the policy has been changed, which led to confusion that councillors are not permitted to ask ques-
tions during public hearings, or that they won’t be asking questions during future public hearings. Deputy chief administrative officer Paul Gipps clarified Tuesday that although the mayor will no longer formally ask councillors if they have questions, that councillors are able to speak up at any time. Their silence does not therefore imply they were not allowed to ask questions. Coun. Larry Nundal said by telephone that councillors might try to get their questions answered before the public meeting, streamlining the public hearing process.

them lunch and a pep talk from a cabinet minister, and it’s hoped solid ideas for new jobs will result. Definite deadlines ensured the first B.C. Jobs Plan forum in the province would at least have a conclusion last Thursday when Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Innovation Pat Bell told participants, which included representatives from Mission, to come up with 20 local projects that could create jobs, given the right conditions. Then he told the group to select 10 people from the meeting and over the next two months, pare
that number down to a half dozen of the most realistic projects. “It is what I call the Mackenzie model. It has proven successful, but it has also failed,” Bell told the jobs forum. The latter happened because a remote community couldn’t agree on its goals — although it worked the first time in Mackenzie, north of Prince George, when mills closed and jobs disappeared three years ago. With the economy dying, business, labour and government identified three goals: reopening the Canfor mill,

vest Fraser North to market the region as a single area. He met with economic development officers from each municipality and said they impressed him because of their consistent approach. “This one just jumped out at me as the obvious region.” Some of the topics discussed, but not necessarily identified as goals were creating an agriculture processing facility, facilitating the Experience the Fraser project — that’s already underway and will see recreational trails on both sides of the Fraser River from Vancouver to Hope — better use of the Fraser River, and developing a green building technology centre. Bell said successful companies focus on areas where they have a unique, competitive advantage. He listed some of the area’s assets as proximity to the outdoors, affordability of land, and transportation infrastructure. “Our whole intent with this is to be able to demonstrate on the ground to people that when we combine our collective efforts, when we work collaboratively with local municipal leaders … as well as union leaders … that brings enough power to move projects over the hump and deliver them in a much more timely fashion than you would otherwise achieve.” He said each minister has to report on what they’re doing to support the B.C. Jobs Plan. “It is very, very focused.”
Our goal, with your help, is to raise $590,000 To date we have raised $439,465 A large plaque will be erected in front of the new building to recognize donations of $1,000 or more. Residents of Mission and Abbotsford were the most generous donors to charitable organizations in 2010 for the ninth year in a row, according to a new report by Statistics Canada. A total of 25,650 people in the census metropolitan area donated $73.7 million, an average of $620 per donation, a 5.1 per cent increase from the previous year despite ongoing turmoil in the economy. This was well above second place Calgary and Victoria, both with a median donation of $390. Pamela Willis, executive director of the Women’s Resource Society of the Fraser Valley, said she’s not surprised by the news, and that community response to a particular need is “immediate and full.” So, why are people in Mission and Abbotsford so generous? Willis says there isn’t one easy answer, but believes people in the two communities are very aware of social issues and understanding that social services can’t carry the burden alone. “We also have a large faith-based

presence, which has a commitment to service,” she added. Mission-Abbotsford represents a 5.5 per cent contribution to B.C.’s $1.28 billion donor total, despite representing just 3.6 per cent of the province’s donor population. Phil Hope, coordinator for the Mission Christmas Bureau for the past dozen years, doesn’t know why, but donations continue to arrive. “For the amount of people that live in Mission, and the amount of help they give to the Christmas Bureau, there’s so much help and so much generosity from such a small place,” he said. Even in the years when donations were expected to drop because of a bad economy, Missionites were more generous than ever, he said. But Hope cautioned that while Mission always comes through, he’s “biting his nails” until the very end. “If they stop today, we’re sunk.” Willis said a tremendous level of support from volunteers and a strong commitment from the business community is also a big reason for success. “Without their commitment and their engagement, this community would look a lot different.”

You can accomplish two good deeds at once this holiday season by donating a non-perishable food item for the St. Joseph Food Bank while donating blood to the donor clinic. The “Bleed and Feed” food collection boxes will be at the front reception desk at all B.C. blood donor clinics from Dec. 1-31, with donations going to the local food bank. Canadian Blood Services (CBS) has estimated for the month of December it will need 9,750 blood donors across the province, while Food Banks British Columbia will need enough food for 70,000 people. “The needs of both the blood bank and the food bank are great,” says Ed Yee, director of Donor and Clinic Services for the B.C. and Yukon region of CBS. “But by rallying together, British Columbians can help fill up both of these banks at blood donor clinics across the province this December.” This is the second year in a row CBS is partnering with FBBC. Blood is needed, not only for trauma victims over the holiday season, but for patients undergoing chemotherapy treatments, cardiac surgeries and organ transplants — procedures that all routinely take place around the Christmas and New Year’s holidays. There are still many donation appointments available at the Mission clinic, at Cedar Valley Mennonite Church, 32840 Janzen Ave., from 2-7:30 p.m., Dec. 19. Donors can book appointments to give blood in one of two ways — by calling 1-888-2-DONATE (1-888-236-6283) or by booking online at blood.ca. For more information visit www.blood.ca or www.foodbanksbc.ca.

Two elementary schools receive playground funds A pair of Mission elementary schools will be getting provincial money for playground funding. Announced late last week, Christine Morrison and Deroche elementary schools will receive $39,000 and $13,000, respectively. The parent advisory councils at these schools are being refunded for recently purchased equipment. The two Mission schools were included in 102 elementary and middle schools across B.C. getting this money. School districts were asked to
The 15th annual LINC clean and sober Christmas dinner will be held Dec. 15. This free yearly event provides an opportunity for everyone to celebrate the season with his or her families and members of the LINC team. The festivities will include a full turkey dinner with all the trimmings, Christmas carols and Santa Claus. The dinner will happen at St. Andrew’s United Church, 7756 Grand St., from 4 to 8 p.m. Dinner is served at 5 p.m.
identify schools that have recently purchased playground equipment with the help of PAC-raised funds, which would be eligible for up to $50,000 in reimbursements under this program, read a government press release. The next and final phase of this program will see approximately $3.6 million being distributed across B.C. for playground upgrades, repairs and replacements. High priority projects identified by school districts will be considered for funding next fiscal year.

nyone who buys a new vehicle, or even any mechanical device that uses fuel to run, is strongly advised to read the manufacturer’s manual before he or she operates the machine. This manual tells the reader not only how to operate the machine, but what is most important, the kind of fuel, how much, the best quality to use, and many other excellent instructions. When God made mankind in the Garden of Eden, He gave precise instructions as to man’s work, rest, exercise, and food. He told mankind, “Your food is
to be fruits, nuts, seeds, and grains.” He intended man to live forever. After mankind disobeyed God and sin entered, He added vegetables. Why? Science has proved that the vegetable kingdom is especially helpful in increasing our immunity against all diseases and degeneration of the body’s tissues. For example: The cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower are especially protective against cancer. The allium family of onions, garlic, leeks is helpful in preventing viral diseases like influenza and colds, and protects from cancer

and heart disease. However, when anyone finds out I’ve been a vegetarian, on a plant-eating diet for over 70 years, the first question I’m asked is: “Where do you get your protein?” I have a good question in response: “Where do the elephant, the horse, the ox, and all these strong animals get their protein?” They get it from the grass and a variety of plants. Actually all plants, especially green leafy ones, are loaded with good quality protein. Meat, which includes fish and fowls, as well as cattle and sheep, is the principal reason for our diseased population. Even milk, eggs, and cheese, are major reasons for disease transmission. Cow’s milk is designed to be the perfect food for rapidly growing calves.

A calf is mature in one year. Foods that promotes that rapid growth, also promote cancer growth. Most professionals promote milk for our calcium needs, but greens such as kale and chicory greens have up to four to six times the available calcium that milk products contain. It has been documented that the higher the animal protein content of the diet, the greater the calcium loss in the urine. We know that when people live mostly on natural plant foods, there is very little osteoporosis and almost no hip fractures in the elderly. It is even common in the last few years to see fractures in sports of the youth due to osteoporosis in our country. The other major reason for a sick nation is we live mostly on refined foods. Do you realize that research in America has documented that 62 per cent of our food is made up of refined packaged food for quick eating? This refined food is devoid of fibre and contains few vitamins and minerals. Of course, there are some vitamins and minerals that are added so people don’t die of deficiency diseases in a few months. For most people, the diet is 25.5 per cent from dairy and animal sources. Only 12.5 per cent of this commonly eaten diet comes from natural vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, and unrefined grains. Is it any wonder that the authorities cry out that this generation may be the first to die before their parents, and even grandparents? So the solution in our dilemma is to reverse this malicious trend in our diet. We should eat 80-90 per cent unrefined plant food, and if we must have eggs, milk, and meat, be sure to have it well cooked, and make it less than 15 per cent of our caloric intake for a happy and healthy long life. - Submitted by Dr. Hilda Rainda, MD

Icebreakers drop two more games BY JASON ROESSLE Mission Record
The Mission junior B hockey team was frozen out again in its last two outings, losing to the Abbotsford Pilots and Richmond Sockeyes, both in the top ranks of the Harold Brittain and Tom Shaw Conferences. Last Friday night saw the Icebreakers take its cross-river rivals in a 6-3 losing effort that saw goals from Danny Hall, and two from Travis Park, who was also named third star of the night. The Mission squad were down 2-1 after the first, but battled back with two goals in the second to lead the game. Four consecutive Pilot goals in the third period ended the Icebreakers’ chances of putting another win in the books. The previous night, the Sockeyes hosted Mission’s PIJHL team at its arena. The Sockeyes put points on the board first, scoring the only goal of the first period, and after a brief tying goal by Mission’s Mattias Schmitt on a power play at the beginning of the second, the Sockeyes hammered their

Long underwear Many wouldn’t think of this item for a Christmas gift, but trust me, this one will be valued. Mission secondary’s senior boys basketball team had the luxury of coasting under the radar nearly all last season, until they emerged as a force to be reckoned with during provincials. The AA Roadrunners weren’t even supposed to make it out of the Fraser Valleys last year, but they earned first and went on to lose in the provincial finals in overtime. After this strong performance, Mission is coming into the season ranked first overall, and all eyes are on the Roadrunners. Several members of the varsity football team also play basketball, and the toughness and physicality they’ve developed on the field is showing on the court, said coaches Danny Jakobs and Jim Pearce. The Roadrunners are already 5-0 with their first league game last night (Dec. 14) at MSS against Archbishop Carney. This year’s team is a far stronger scoring squad, said Jakobs. The Roadrunners last year focused on a strangling defence that allowed them to contain highscoring teams, and while that element is still existent, the players worked hard in the off-season to bring up their shooting skills.

Monday to Friday, 7:00 am to 5:00 pm BC Hydro will be under-grounding a section of the power distribution line that currently runs along the east side of Wilson Street near the Ruskin Dam. This temporary relocation of the distribution line is required for site safety to avoid the risk of any drilling or construction equipment accidently contacting the lines during the field tests or project construction. For five weeks starting November 21, 2011 a single lane closure of Wilson Street will be required to install the duct bank for the distribution line. Priority access will be provided for the school bus and emergency vehicles. Hayward Street over the Ruskin Dam will remain open during this time.
2,742 boxes were assembled and will be sent to children in 100 countries across the world. This number is up from the 2010 total of 2,007. The shoeboxes are filled with school supplies, small toys and hygiene items. For more information send an e-mail to susanaaron@telus.net.

If you’re a pregnant woman who will be having her baby in a Fraser Valley hospital between September and April, you’re in high demand by University of the Fraser Valley nursing students. Mothers-to-be who will be having their babies in the Fraser Valley are once again invited to help a UFV nursing student learn about pregnancy and childbirth from the patient’s perspective. Women having their babies at Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Surrey Memorial, Ridge Mead-
ows, Peace Arch, Langley Memorial or Royal Columbian hospitals are eligible for this program. Countless UFV nursing students have had the opportunity to shadow a pregnant woman through doctor visits, prenatal classes, labour and delivery, and the postnatal period through the momsto-be program over the past 15 years. The students complete this component of the program while they study the theory of maternity nursing and before they take clinical training in
maternity wards. If you agree to participate, the student nurse will meet you (and your partner if applicable) for a “get to know you chat.” The range of prenatal experiences the student may be involved with include a visit to the doctor, a prenatal class, and providing support for you and your partner during all of your labour and delivery, and a visit afterwards. For the band Copilots, playing at the Big B Saloon this Saturday is going to be a homecoming of sorts. That’s because although most of the members are from Mission, they’ve played most of their gigs out of town. Behind the music, three of the band members are Mission-born and raised: Skye Brooks on lead guitar, who also writes the songs and performs lead locals, his brother Dylan Smith on drums, and lifelong friend Pete Schmitt on bass guitar. The band is rounded out by Vancouver’s Karma Sohn on keyboard and Chad MacQuarrie on guitar. Brooks, recently recognized as a 2011 Mission Muse Award winner, is a drummer in a dozen

different bands, a jawdropping piece of trivia. “They’re not all active at the same time,” he quickly explains. “I know it sounds like a lot.” It’s Brooks’ reputation as a drummer — the 37-year-old has been playing since he was 13 — that keeps him working year-round, but he’s mainly dedicated to three bands. One of those bands, named Fond of Tigers, captured a Juno Award last March in Toronto for best instrumental album of the year. Two of the band members from that group weren’t there because they were busy touring with other bands. It’s a common part of being a modern musician. “Pete and I grew up together in Mission and we started writing songs a long time ago, right

after high school in the mid-90s, and we just kind of learned to play together.” Brooks and Schmitt play the rhythm section in another collaborative band, Inhabitants, a Vancouver-based jazz-instrumental band which mixes improv and experimental post-rock music. Most of the music Brooks plays is jazzbased and improvised, whereas Copilots is more rehearsed and structured traditional rock. It is, however, still far from the mainstream music industry.
The two friends used to play gigs in Mission years ago, including the night concerts at Heritage River Park, before Brooks moved to Vancouver. He spent eight years there, getting a music diploma from Vancouver Community College specializing in jazz, returning to Mission a few years ago to buy his childhood home in Silverdale. Copilots released their self-titled debut album in 2007, and followed that up with the 10-track album Escape Through The Trees last year, tour-

ing western Canada. Brooks said the band will play select songs from both albums, as well as three new songs that haven’t been heard before. Brooks said he still has to commute to Vancouver to do gigs or recording sessions, which is why playing in Mission has a nice homecoming feel to it. “Mainly I’m focused on Vancouver, and I tour a lot, but I only recently started playing in Mission by doing house concerts.” Brooks plays softer
music as Copilots is too loud to play in front of a 40-person house concert, but it’s one way Brooks has started building his reputation as a hometown musician. He’ll have a chance to up the amps on Saturday. “I’m looking forward to playing here and seeing some old friends.” Copilots play at the Big B Saloon on Dec. 17 at 9 p.m. Tickets are $10 in advance or $12 at the door. Landfill rates set to increase Due to increased operating and monitoring costs, tipping fees at the Mission landfill will increase, effective Jan. 4, 2011. The disposal rate for garbage will increase to $92.50/tonne, brush will decrease to $55/tonne and gypsum board will increase to $145/ tonne. The minimum charge will remain $5 per load. Please note that residential food waste may be dropped off free, provided it is separated from garbage and recyclables and free of contamination. Food waste includes all items that originating in the kitchen and will naturally decompose. To avoid attracting bears and other wildlife, do not store food waste outside and consider freezing it until it can be dropped off. Plastic bags and other containers must be removed upon drop off. Other materials accepted for free at the Mission Landfill and the Mission Recycling Depot (7229 Mershon Street) are residential (blue-bag) recyclables and scrap metal items, including appliances, hot water tanks, metal siding, wire fencing etc. Fridges and freezers may only be dropped off at the landfill due to the need for Freon removal. For more information, please check your 2011 and 2012 curbside collection calendars, visit the District’s website at www.mission.ca or phone the Engineering Department at 604-820-3736.

Trends are very encouraging, showing a marked increase in compost diversion with garbage remaining at a steady level over the past two months. Compared to November 2010, Mission’s curbside garbage showed a 12% reduction, while curbside compost increased by an astounding 77%.

Keep up the great work, Mission residents, you are on the right track! Free Rot Pot compost will be made available for pickup at the Mission Landfill on Earth Day (April 22 nd, 2012), so mark your calendars and reap some of the more direct rewards! For people who have been hesitant to try using their Rot Pot, the upcoming holiday season is the perfect occasion to come onboard and join the majority of Mission residents. Rot Pot food waste is transported to the Mission Landfill, where it is composted into a valuable soil amendment, rather than buried to produce methane - a strong greenhouse gas. In times of abundance and, in some cases, excess, using the Rot Pot for kitchen waste is a simple, yet very effective measure to take to benefit the environment.

What’s Happening in Mission
JOY Joy is the second grace mentioned by St. Paul as a fruit of the Spirit. Joy is a translation of the Greek word “chara,” which can be rendered as joy, gladness, or delight. The Greek verb “charein” means “to rejoice.” Throughout the Bible, there are many and varied occurrences of joy and rejoicing. For instance, we are told repeatedly in the Psalms to “Rejoice in the Lord.” (Cf. Psalms 33, 35, and 97) And Jesus tells us that He has come to bring joy: “These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.” (John 15:11) We are repeatedly told that following God’s commandments and having faith that God will save us, brings joy. Indeed, it is joyful to know that we are doing God’s will, that our sins are truly forgiven, and that salvation awaits us. This is the real joy which abides in us despite the ups and downs of our external circumstances or even our momentary mood swings. And although we may not always feel the elation of being on top of the mountain, if we keep our faith and trust in the Lord, we will always have the bedrock of joy to sustain us.

Mission animal society in Aviva semis A seven-year-old community project in Mission is just one of the many semi-finalists from across the country announced for this year’s Aviva Community Fund online contest, an annual competition that supports positive change in Canadian communities through a $1 million donation. More than 1,500 Canadians submitted ideas and cast over 1.5 million votes for projects that seek to improve communities across the country. Mission’s entry, Helping Along the HumanAnimal Bond, is in the $50,000 category. Winning the Aviva grant would allow the Senior Animals In Need Today Society (SAINTS) to care for the medical needs of animals coming from homes that are broken because of issues such as hoarding, substance abuse, inability to look after the medical needs of a pet, and medical or mental issues of the pet’s owner. “At the end of the road for most human family devastations, losses, traumas, sits alone the family pet,” reads the submission. SAINTS helps to care for older pets left behind by seniors moving into long-term facility care, families facing eviction, or pets who face neglect from substance abusers who realize they’re unable to care for them any longer. The organization provides sanctuary for senior and special needs animals that have nowhere else to go, since adoption is often not possible. SAINTS was started in Mission in December 2004 after volunteers at other animal shelters saw many senior animals spending their last days in a shelter or pound. Since 2004 the organization has cared for over 410 and adopted over 130 into new homes. Visit www.saintsrescue. ca for more information. People can vote for SAINTS at www.AvivaCommunityFund.org until Dec. 16. Finalists and winners will be announced Dec. 20. and Jan. 25.

Mark Donnelly is known to Canucks fans as simply “Mr. O’ Canada” for his spirited renditions of the Canadian and American national anthems. Now, to celebrate the release of his new holiday CD, Donnelly and his family will perform seasonal favorites at the Clarke Theatre on Friday, Dec. 23. An accomplished choral conductor and arranger, Donnelly began directing church choirs as a teenager and continues to do so. It is impossible to talk about Donnelly without mentioning music. The three eldest Donnelly children have grown up singing along with dad, earning them years of vocal experience. Colleen’s beautiful soprano voice and vivacious personality have won her many accolades. Theresa hits you with a rich mezzo voice. And Sean is a lively “tenortone” like his dad. Bring your family and enjoy all of your favourite Christmas songs. Tickets are on sale for $20 at all Ticketmaster locations, by phone 1-885-985-5000 or online at www.ticketmaster.ca. Doors at 7 p.m. and show at 7:30.
