Paramedic hailed a hero Stroet risked his safety to help save a woman from a vehicle that had overturned in a water-filled ditch BY JASON ROESSLE Mission Record

It took nearly three hours of hospital care to bring Darryl Stroet’s core body temperature back to safe levels. The Mission B.C. Ambulance Service paramedic spent about 30 minutes up to his waist in frigid water last Monday as he worked with local firefighters to help save a woman whose truck had careened into a ditch and landed upside down, trapping her. Stroet’s shift had started at 6:30 a.m., and he was just finishing checking over his ambulance when the crew was paged out to Chester Street and Lougheed Highway for a single-vehicle accident. “When we arrived I could see lots of civilians all over the place,” he said, including three

bystanders who witnessed the crash and had waded into the waStroet ter-filled channel to see if the driver was injured. “My first thought was that I didn’t want them to get hurt, to get hypothermia,” said the 19-year veteran paramedic. He made his way down the precariously steep ditch and called out to the trapped woman. “‘You’re safe, we’re here to help you,’” he said. Stroet asked a nearby RCMP constable to toss down a crowbar, which the former Smithers firefighter used to pry the underside of the door

Season ends for Christmas Bureau

The holiday hampers have been given out and volunteers at the Christmas Bureau are now taking down the tinsel and lights and packing up the office for the season. The group put together more than 700 hampers to help local families enjoy the holiday season. “We are extremely thankful for all the generosity people and groups have shown,” said coordinator, Phil Hope, noting donations were still arriving on Christmas Eve. Donation drives, such as the Christmas at the Clarke and Fireman’s Ride successfully brought in much needed food and money. While the holiday bureau is closed for the season, Mission Community Services’ food centre remains open the rest of the year, and “we continue to need food and financial donations,” said Hope. The food centre is open five days a week and is located at 32646 Logan Ave. Clockwise from top: Chamber of Commerce’s Pay It Forward program was hugely successful. Downtown bank manager Chris Calverley has seen Mission’s subtle metamorphosis from his perch at the Scotiabank at the corner of First Avenue and Welton Street. He arrived at this branch on Oct. 30,1988 — a newcomer to the area. Calverley says he felt welcomed from day one. Which is why, perhaps, he paid it forward by volunteering with the Mission Community Foundation and the local Rotary Club. “Remarkably, it’s still very similar,” says Calverley, of the lay of the land in Mission. However, the major industry in town has changed, he notes. In the 1980s the fibreglass plant was a large employer in Mission; nowadays, InterWrap — a manufacturer of lumber wrap material — has taken that honour. As a loan intermediary, Calverley was a party to many Mission residents’ milestones — weddings,

home expansion, first business. He’s seen small enterprises upgrade to larger businesses. The bank itself has undergone three expansions since Calverley showed up. It’s the personal connections with the community that he most values. Just last week, Calverley gave some local preschoolers a tour of the bank’s vault. Online banking may be ubiquitous, but it will never replace some people’s desire for a human connection, he says. “We do identify the fact that every person is not cut out for electronic banking,” adds Calverley. “It’s a social outing for a lot of people.” Now, after logging 39 years of service with Scotiabank, Calverley is hanging up his calculator, and reflecting on his early years in the banking industry. He started as a trainee at the Bank of Nova Scotia in Prince George in 1973. Over the next seven years, he moved five times

chasing after promotions — from Williams Lake to Mackenzie to Vancouver, eventually settling in Mission 24 years ago. “People ask me if I am going to stay here and I say ‘yes, absolutely.’” But he is going to retire from the workforce entirely, and take some time to gather his thoughts. His Paul Harris Fellow humanitarian award — Rotary’s highest honour — reaffirms that Calverley’s community service days are not over. Also displayed on his office wall is a caricature of Calverley on his Harley-Davidson Road Glide tearing through the greens at Mission Golf and Country Club, done by late Mission artist Lo Linkert. Calverley plans to enrol in Spanish immersion school in Mexico, so he can converse with his grandson who lives in Cabo San Lucas with Calverley’s daughter and son-in-law. His last day at Scotiabank is Dec. 31. A going away party for Calverley has been planned for January.

open two to three inches so that he could use his flashlight to pierce the inky darkness. He saw the water had risen to the woman’s neck. When Mission Fire/ Rescue Service arrived Stroet asked for the firefighters’ extrication tools. The paramedic and a firefighter worked together, and five minutes later, the door had been forced enough to allow the victim to escape. The woman was relatively unhurt, and whisked off to hospital. Stroet went to look for the people who had been in the water to check them for hypothermia, but quickly found he was so cold and cramped that he could barely walk, and that he couldn’t use his hands. He was taken to emergency where, over the course of almost three hours, he was warmed up. “It was a brutal feeling,” he said about the pins and needles pain coursing through his legs and hands as circulation returned. Mission Asst. Fire Chief Larry Watkinson said simply that Stroet’s action were heroic.

Since the story gained widespread attention, Stroet has been getting recognized around Mission. While uncomfortable with all the attention, he’s pleased more people are getting a glimpse into what he and other first responders face on a daily basis. “I work here because I live here, and I take pride in helping the people of Mission. I take a lot of pride in being a paramedic and in putting on my uniform,” he said.

Police responding to fewer alarm calls starting on Jan. 1 As of Jan. 1, 2013, Mission RCMP will be changing its criteria for attending alarm calls received within the District of Mission in order to better utilize police resources and eliminate unnecessary billing fees to business and home owners. Response to alarms will only be made if they are “verified” by the property reference or key holder. An alarm is “verified” when a property reference, key holder or neighbour has reported suspicious activity or confirmed

that the property has been breached in some manner. Homeowners are encouraged to provide updated contact information to their alarm companies, as police will no longer be attending to routine alarms. Police will continue to attend on panic, hold-up, multi-zone, two-way voice, glass break and school alarms. PUBLIC NOTICE Sanitary Sewer System Smoke Testing Program The District of Mission will be carrying out a smoke testing program in early 2013 within specified areas only. The goal is to identify possible cross connections, infiltration and inflow in the sanitary sewer system. During the smoke testing, field crews blow air and nontoxic smoke into the sanitary sewer system and monitor where smoke escapes. The District of Mission’s contractor, ABC Pipe Cleaning Service Ltd., will deliver to all effected businesses and residences a notification brochure 48 hours prior to the testing. Curbside limit doubled for postChristmas pick-up Please note that both the Mission Landfill and the Recycling Depot will be closing at 3 p.m. on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. Both facilities will also be closed on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, as well as New Year’s Day. Holidays that fall on weekdays cause the collection schedule to move ahead. As every year, residents within the curbside collection area will be able to place double the regular amount of garbage at the curb during the week following Christmas. For the purposes of this special collection arrangement, it will be acceptable to set out additional garbage in bags, for a total of two bins and two bags. Please make as much use of Mission’s recycling and composting programs as possible this holiday season. Remember that all food waste should be separated from the regular garbage and placed in your Rot Pot or yard waste bin. Compostable food waste includes meat, bones, bread, all table scraps and paper napkins. Please store your Rot Pot, garbage bins, yard waste containers and blue bags inside or

in a wildlife resistant enclosure until the morning of collection to avoid luring bears and other wildlife into residential neighbourhoods. Bears are attracted by smells and will investigate anything they perceive as a potential food source. Gift wrap, due to its ink content and low paper grade, is not recyclable. Consider making the packaging part of the gift by wrapping presents in tea towels, scarves, reusable tins or boxes. Likewise, styrofoam is not recyclable, so should be avoided whenever possible or placed with the garbage. Some stores may offer take-back options for styrofoam, so check at the time of purchase. The District would like to remind everyone that notices to purchase new dog licenses have recently been sent to all previously registered dog owners. If you purchase your dog license before Feb. 1, 2013 you will receive a discount of $5 for each license you purchase. The fees collected are used to help fund the cost of animal control services in the municipality. Just as importantly, the license you purchase identifies you as the dog’s owner. This is important if you need to be contacted because your dog has been found or injured. If you do not purchase a license you will be in violation of the municipal bylaw. NOTICE TO ELECTORS OF THE DISTRICT OF MISSION OF AN ALTERNATIVE APPROVAL PROCESS FOR A PROPOSED EXTENSION OF MUNICIPAL BOUNDARIES Notice is hereby given that under Section 86 of the Community Charter and Section 20 of the Local Government Act, the Council of the District of Mission intends to petition the Minister of Community and Rural Development requesting an extension of the area of the municipality to include the following described lands: All and singular that certain parcel or tract of land being part of NEW WESTMINSTER DISTRICT which may be more particularly described as follows: Commencing on the eastern boundary of District Lot 8168 (pending – NRO File: 2410328) with the intersection of the north boundary of Township 4 Range 3 West of the 7th Meridian (the north boundary of the District of Mission); thence on a line bearing approximately 343˚, a distance of 782 metres, more or less; thence on a line bearing approximately 253˚, a distance of 650 metres; thence on a line bearing approximately 163˚, a distance of 590 metres, more or less; to the intersection of the western boundary of District Lot 8168 with the north boundary of Township 4 Range 3 West of the 7th Meridian; thence on a line bearing approximately 90˚, a distance of 678 metres, more or less, to the point of commencement. The whole contains by admeasurement 44.6 hectares, more or less. This property is located on the south shores of Alouette Lake:

Rationale for the Extension The District of Mission held a licence of occupation over the former site of the Boulder Bay Correctional Camp (Campsite), including the portion extending into Electoral Area F of the Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD). Effective in January 2011 the District assigned their licence to the Tim Horton’s Children’s Foundation (Foundation), who wishes to develop the campsite for a children’s camp. The campsite is bisected by the current boundary for the District, therefore, any development would require the Foundation to obtain permits and bylaw amendments in two jurisdictions. In addition, the provision of emergency services will be handled by the District of Mission. In order to deal with a single jurisdiction the Foundation has asked the District to submit a boundary expansion application to the Province in order to extend their municipal boundary to encompass the areas of the campsite in Electoral Area F. The Fraser Valley Regional District Board passed a resolution on September 21, 2012 supporting the District’s proposed boundary extension. ALTERNATIVE APPROVAL PROCESS AND ELIGIBILITY And Further Take Notice That the municipality may proceed with the boundary extension request unless at least ten percent of municipal electors indicate that a referendum must be held by submitting a signed Elector Response Form to the District of Mission Municipal Hall no later than 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 29, 2013 (29/01/13). Elector Response Forms must be in the form established by the District of Mission, and only those persons who qualify as electors of the municipality are entitled to sign Elector Response Forms. Resident Elector – You are entitled to submit an Elector Response Form as a resident elector if you are age 18 or older on the day of submission, are a Canadian citizen, have lived in BC for at least six months, and have been a resident of the District of Mission for the past 30 days or more. Non-Resident Elector – You are entitled to submit an Elector Response Form as a non-resident property elector if you are age 18 or older on the day of submission, are a Canadian citizen, have lived in BC for at least six months, have owned and held registered title to a property in the District of Mission for the past 30 days or more, and do not qualify as a resident elector. NOTE: Only one non-resident property elector may submit an Elector Response Form per property, regardless of how many owners there may be. If less than ten percent (2,539) of municipal electors submit an Elector Response Form, the boundary extension request will be deemed to have the approval of the electors and the District of Mission may proceed to Cabinet for approval. For the purpose of conducting the Alternative Approval opportunity, the number of electors is calculated as 25,391. MAKING AND BREAKING NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS

What new year’s resolutions should we make for the year 2013? The usual ones like trying to exercise more, going on a diet, or giving something up, just do not seem to work that well with most people. I very seldom get past January before my determined resolutions have gone along the wayside. Perhaps we should make resolutions that are not so demanding and that are more enjoyable for everyone. For example, we could try to be more positive and expect only good things to happen to us; every day we could tell our spouse that we love them; we could try to be a better listener and not do all of the talking; we could say something nice to someone each day; we could pray, praise and thank God throughout each day for all of His many blessings; and we could try to live a better life and set good examples for our family, friends and coworkers. Although making and breaking our new year’s resolutions helps to show us our faults and shortcomings, by following the love of our Lord and striving each day to be a better person, we will meet with God’s approval.

Mission’s mayor and president of the local chamber of commerce each gave a rundown of the past year’s activities, highlighting the two groups’ efforts to improve the community, at last Thursday’s annual Christmas luncheon. Chamber president Elyssa Lockhart commented on the organization’s policy initiatives that are moving forward such as the Fraser Valley Inter-Municipal Licensing pilot that begins in January. “This potentially saves many in [the construction sector]

Mission Christmas Bureau. “None of us expected the community to be so supportive of this grass-roots program. The big message here is Mission does shop local.” Mayor Ted Adlem spoke about the district’s four key areas of focus: financial sustainability, economic development, infrastructure, and municipal operations and partnerships. He then went through a checklist of work that council and district staff had done in 2012. “For the first time in memory,

new construction tax revenue from commercial development in the District of Mission is now outpacing that of residential development,” noted Adlem. “Processing times for re-zoning applications have gone from 79 days to 32, on average … subdivisions applications from 76 days to 48, on average.” Adlem mentioned the pending downtown revitalization plan and initiatives that would provide flexibility for business to build and expand on the waterfront flood plain.

A new program is teaching potential chefsto-be the benefits of cooking with locally grown foods. Mission’s Heritage Park secondary is one of 37 schools provincewide enrolled in the Take a Bite of B.C., put together by B.C. Agriculture in the Classroom. Some of the province’s top producers have supplied school cafeterias, like HPSS, with the foods. “We always try and let the students know that what we’re cooking with is local,” said HPSS Chef Peter Bucher. “Parents are always telling me that their kids want to cook at home using fresh vegetables, so the concept is certainly working.” Under Bucher’s supervision, the students create gourmet dishes with the local product and then serve them to the school cafeteria. Students can then purchase meals they

wouldn’t normally try, such as nine-grain cranberry panini with turkey, slow-roasted pork shoulder and chicken tarragon with vegetables and rice pilaf. A recent cafeteria special featured pork meatloaf, courtesy of the BC Hog Marketing Board, which was topped with fresh portobello mushrooms from All Seasons Mushrooms. This was laid on a bed of spaetzle, a type of noodle which used 30 eggs from the BC Egg Marketing Board, and featured a side dish of rutabagas and turnips from BC Fresh. “Local food is amazing,” said Heritage Park student chef Piper Reid, as he grates freshly boiled red beets for a salad. “It has more flavour, looks better and helps support the community.” For more information and recipes, please visit aitc.ca/bc.

FISHER Margaret It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Margaret Fisher, our beloved mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend. Margaret passed away surrounded by her family, December 17, 2012 in Abbotsford, BC. Margaret was born on July 14, 1936 in Glasgow, Scotland. She immigrated with her family to Canada in the early 1970â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s when her family moved to Canmore, Alberta. Cherished wife of Robert Fisher, Margaret will always be lovingly remembered by her 6 children, Derek (Tara), Fiona, Mark (Sandra), Colin (Nicole), Jean (Brian), Russell; 2 brothers, John and Ian; 2 sisters, Mary and Hannah; 5 grandchildren; 2 great granddaughters; and many other family and friends. Margaret was predeceased by her grandson, Grayson; her sister, Nancy; and her brother, Bill. Mom will be forever remembered for her love and dedication towards her family, for her love of life and whirlwind spirit. No formal funeral service will be held at this time. A gathering in her memory may take place in spring 2013. A future announcement will be put in the paper when a location, time and date have been decided. Margaret will be laid to rest in her final resting place with her parents and sister in Canmore, Alberta. A heartfelt thank you to all the staff at Fraser Hope Lodge in Hope, BC and to Menno Home in Abbotsford, BC for everything youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve done for mom and our family during this difficult time. KENNEDY, Merle William Carl born March 19, 1933 in Cutknife, SK died of idiopathic lung fibrosis in Abbotsford, December 19, 2012. He leaves behind his wife of 60 years, Agnes Jean (nee Mackie), his children Terry, Tom (Patsy), and Dawn (Cliff), grandchildren, Candice, Aubrey, Tyler, Amy and Jody and 8 greatgrandchildren. As well, he will be missed by his sisters, Betty, his twin, Marie and Lorraine. He was predeceased by his brother, Lorne. Merle proudly grew up on the prairies and moved to Trail, BC in 1949 where he met Agnes. He attended British Columbia Bible Institute and pastored with the Pentecostal Assemblies of Canada throughout BC for 28 years. After leaving the ministry, he held a number of jobs until he retired. He loved hymns, trains, his 1940 Packard, antiques and any electronic gadget. He was a hard worker, very social and never forgot a face or remembered a name. He laughed easily, preached practically and loved life whole-heartedly. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in the presence of Jesus. Many thanks to Dr. Greyling and the staff of Abbotsford Regional Hospital who provided exceptional care. No flowers please, but donations can be made to Summit Pacific College Library in Merleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s memory. Cremation has taken place with later internment in Trail, BC. A memorial service will be held at Christian Life Community Church, Abbotsford, BC, December 28, 1:00 p.m.

Rod will long be remembered for his total commitment and dedication to family, friends and the community, whatever he undertook to do. His never failing sense of humour was always a source of enjoyment.
