Moss Avenue home destroyed

No one was hurt in a Dec. 23 house fire that gutted a single family home on Moss Avenue, just north of municipal hall.

A fire on Moss Avenue destroyed a house Dec. 23.

Shortly before 3 p.m. Mission firefighters from all three stations were called to the residence off Stave Lake Road, just north of municipal hall.

Fire was pouring out of all the windows by the time firefighters arrived, said Chief Ian Fitzpatrick, but no one was injured.

The damage was heavy enough that an excavator was brought in to level what was left of the structure.

Fitzpatrick said a son of one of the three renters living at the house was outside playing basketball with his babysitter.

They heard the dog barking and went inside to find the upstairs on fire.

Two of the three renters were housed for 72 hours at the Best Western under the care of Emergency Social Services. The other individual went to Abbotsford, said the chief.

Mission Community Services is now helping the other two get back on their feet, he added.

PSIT problems come to head

Concerns about the Public Safety Inspection Team (PSIT) gained widespread attention in January after a group of homeowners who said their residences were illegally searched met with the B.C. Civil Liberties Association to discuss launching a civil suit against the District of Mission.

PSIT scanned BC Hydro records and flagged properties using 93 kWh per day.

Later in the month, district council deferred PSIT operations for at least a month pending a program review.

Council also asked staff to hold current cases already charged the $5,200

inspection fee until the review concluded.

The inquiry was to examine team member qualifications, public relations training and the successes and failures of the program.

At a council meeting in late January, residents complained their human rights were violated and were charged a hefty fine without an opportunity to prove their innocence or challenge PSIT’s findings.

Then-councillor Paul Horn apologized to the people negatively affected by the bylaw. “It was never the intention to hurt people.”

Durieu elementary closes, Deroche stays open Deroche Elementary School avoided closure in late February, but Durieu elementary was not as fortunate.

Angry parents stormed out of the meeting at Hatzic Secondary School moments after school trustees voted unanimously to shut the rural facility’s doors by the end of June, 2011.

Trustees voted 3-2 to keep Deroche open.

Declining enrolment put both schools on the chopping block late last year, but the risks to students, educationally and socially, were too great in Deroche, decided trustees.

The student population of Durieu will merge with Hatzic elementary in September.

Trustees used eight criteria — such as bus ride times, and maximizing fiscal resources — to aid in making their decisions.

Secretary treasurer Carrie McVeigh said closing Durieu would save approximately $298,000 annually, while shutting down Deroche would trim $288,000.

And while each trustee said money is not the bottom line in their decision, it couldn’t be

ignored.

Deroche’s lower socio-economic demographic and its aboriginal student composition swayed trustees to keep the eastern Mission school open.

Harbour improvements Mission harbour was getting a significant facelift in early February which the local authority believed would draw in more visitors and improve the area’s esthetics.

Work was underway along Harbour Avenue as the $900,000-plus project saw the dike level raised, new riprap, benches, lighting and ramps installed, and construction of a new Mission Harbour Authority (MHA) building housing an interpretive centre and historical photo displays.

The harbour is a community asset, said MHA president Alec Finnsson, and the improvements will attract business and tourists to the facility.

“One of the most exciting things is that [this project] creates a diversity for the harbour,” Finnsson stated.

Anger expressed over PSIT review

The month-long look into the Public Safety Inspection Team turned into a document with three sections and 20 recommendations, all adopted by council and were expected to be phased in over the upcoming months.

The three components are moving forward with public safety inspections, past practices, and notices on title.

The review posed many questions and work is still needed, said Mission’s deputy chief administrative officer, Paul Gipps at the time, who authored the document after gathering input from community members, legal counsel, and other municipalities.

One of the changes council needed to explore was whether or not a fulltime team was still required. With fewer properties being flagged based on high hydro consumption, it was recommended the program use a part-

time team with in-house resources, and employ specialists when necessary.

The report also stated the district had to communicate better with the public about the program, and the owner and resident of the property up for inspection.

Former Mission Mountie docked one day’s pay A former Mission RCMP member was given a written reprimand and docked one day’s pay for failing to properly investigate a shots fired call more than two years ago which left Lisa Dudley clinging to life inside her Greenwood Drive home while her boyfriend, Guthrie McKay, lay dead in the same home.

The incident prompted RCMP to adopt a new policy where shots fired calls are a priority and attending members must contact the caller.

RCMP seizes computers from Stevens and Taylor Former Mission councillor Ron Taylor had three computers inside his home seized by RCMP in early May. Around 7 p.m. May 2, three Mounties, one from Mission, Surrey and Chilliwack, armed with a search warrant took the equipment to look for alleged leaks from Mission council.

Two search warrants were executed simultaneously that day, and Coun.

Jenny Stevens saw her machines removed as well.

Mission RCMP had been conducting investigations into a breach of trust and breach of the Community Charter.

Taylor was vocal against the district’s Public Safety Inspection Team which scans BC Hydro data and inspects homes with higher than average power consumption.

The district is facing a class-action lawsuit from residents who believe their rights were violated by the searches.

Mayor James Atebe called the incident a police matter and declined to offer any comments.

Kamp wins again Candidate Randy Kamp won his

fourth term as MP May 2, winning the Pitt Meadows-Maple Ridge-Mission riding by almost 10,000 votes as Conservative blue swept the country.

Kamp gave his victory speech an hour and 45 minutes after polls closed at 7 p.m.

“I felt there was a growing appetite for a majority,” said Kamp as the crowd cheered the Conservative sweep of 166 seats.

“It’s a better result than I thought it would be. It shows that people were really tired of elections and wanted stability.”

At the final tally, Kamp had garnered 28,848 votes, over NDP candidate Craig Speirs’ 18,865. Liberal Mandeep Bhuller came a distant third, taking 2,738 votes, while Green Peter Tam wasn’t far behind with 2,642.

Kamp pushed his lead from the 2008 election over his nearest rival by more than 2,000 votes.

Voter turnout for the election was slight higher than 2008 with 53,093 of 88,555 registered electors in the riding (60 per cent) casting a ballot, compared to 51, 308 during the last election.

HPSS students protest layoffs Heritage Park Secondary School students demonstrated outside the facility in mid-June, protesting cutbacks in education.

Rally organizers Clinton Large and Kylie Harmatuik said it was the prospect of losing eight Heritage teachers that most struck a chord with the students.

Large explained that all teachers at the school without eight years of seniority were given layoff notices. Many will be hired back, but in the meantime they have no job security.

The protestors received many honks of support from passing motorists, and some adults grabbed a sign and joined the protest.

They highlighted a serious issue in the Mission School District this year. Mike Trask, the bargaining chair for the Mission Teachers’ Union, said approximately 130 teachers across the district were given layoff notices.

Many, he concedes, will

be hired back.

District apologizes The District of Mission apologized to 15 property owners after a review found there was insufficient evidence to conclude their homes were being used for marijuana grow operations.

In total 70 owners were to receive review notices in the mail, and 15 were to have their status as a controlled substance property changed, and fees reversed.

An analysis of the 70 open files was completed June 1, said Gipps, adding a third party was used to help with the work. Open cases are those identified by the Public Safety Inspection Team where owners have not paid the $5,200 inspection fee.

The district was then looking into closed cases in which homeowners have not completed the remediation orders, which detail hazards on the property that must be repaired, but have paid the fine.

Wal-Mart arrives with new Mission SmartCentre District learned in July about the new tenant

Dignitaries broke ground for the SmartCentre development at Wren Street and Lougheed Highway on July 18.

It has almost been a given for the past year which anchor tenant would occupy the shopping centre slated to be built at Lougheed Highway and Wren Street.

But it finally became official in July.

A ground-breaking ceremony was held Monday, July 18, for the $30-million project, which is expected to pour approximately $700,000 into the District of Mission’s coffers annually through taxes.

The shopping centre, built by SmartCentres, will include over 117,000 square feet of retail space, with WalMart taking up 95,000.

According to Andrew Sinclair, SmartCentres’ land development manager, an additional $780,000 in development cost charges will be paid to the district, along with improvements where Wren Street and the Cedar Valley Connector intersect with Lougheed Highway.

First annual MissionFest in August Mission’s downtown was packed with people on Aug. 13, as the district closed down First Avenue to host the inaugural MissionFest.

According to downtown business owner and chief organizer, Rhett Nicholson, crowds ranged between 3,000 and 5,000 people throughout the day.

“The streets were completely filled all day for the whole event,” he said, adding that even optimistic organizers were surprised at the turnout.

“I don’t think anyone really realized how big it was going to be because there was so much going on that weekend.”

Nicholson was referring to the third annual Rockin’ River Music Festival that was going on simultaneously at Mission Raceway Park, featuring some of the best country music B.C. has to offer. But far from competing for spectators, Nicholson said they complemented one another.

The starring attraction was the final showdown of the Rockin’ River karaoke contest of winners from 10 different B.C. cities and towns, with the winner getting to sing at Rockin’ River Fest itself.

Another big crowd pleaser was the show n’ shine that brought in 75 flashy, modified and vintage automobiles. Nicholson said it was a welcome influx given only 45 people pre-registered.

He said at one point it looked like a scene from the 1950s with all the vintage cars lined along First Avenue.

For a first-time event, Nicholson said it drew unexpected interest and added that Mayor James Atebe has already said it should be held again next year.

“This development will generate 150 to 200 construction jobs,” he said.

A further estimated 260 retail jobs will also be created.

Abbotsford-Mission MLA Randy Hawes said while many complain about Wal-Mart, the reality is many Mission residents drive to Abbotsford to shop at that community’s store.

“This shows that people want Wal-Mart,” he said.

The store will help stem the tide of Missionites spending money outside the community, he added, a figure estimated at $103 million annually, according to

the 2010 Employment Lands Strategy.

“I’m really excited about this project, it shows [Mission] is coming of age,” said Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce president Cal Crawford.

Mayor James Atebe said the announcement is a “great day for Mission.”

The tax dollars generated from the project represent three to four per cent if the municipality had to recoup it from residential taxpayers.

“The only way to make Mission a complete community is to bring in more business,” he said.

The Sept. 1 issue of The Record announced the results of the harmonized sales tax referendum in British Columbia, with many Missionites following the provincial trend to “extinguish” it.

According to the results released by Elections BC, 54.63 per cent of 18,106 voters in the electoral riding of Abbotsford-Mission voted to keep the tax, while 55.8 per cent of 19,219 voters in the electoral riding of Maple RidgeMission voted to get rid of it.

Mission business owner Ted Adlem, a former director on the board of the B.C. Restaurant and Foodservices Association, welcomed the news.

“I would say the people have spoken, and had the government listened to begin with, they wouldn’t have put the people in a position where they had to speak,” he said.

Adlem said the restaurant industry instantly saw between a seven and eight per cent reduction in sales when the HST was introduced.

But Carlo Billinger, co-owner of Rex Cox Men’s Wear on First Avenue, was sorry to see the results.

“The HST worked a little fairer for my business in the respect that everybody was paying the same tax,” he said, before adding he wasn’t surprised with the results.

“They should have taken it off food, and haircuts and beauty products and kept it at 12 (per cent) just the way it was and I think people would have been more receptive to it.”

Abbotsford-Mission MLA Randy Hawes didn’t think regional voting results was linked to party support.

“I don’t read anything into any of that, it’s just people’s personal feelings about whether they think the tax was good or bad,” he said.

“People look at their personal thing and they don’t look at the big picture, and unfortunately in B.C. this is going to impact business, and business is where jobs come from.”

Flagship UFV program lands in Mission The University of the Fraser Valley launched a “flagship program” in graphic and digital design in October, thanks to a $500,000 funding partnership with the district.

The two-year, 60-credit diploma program will begin in September 2012.

“Today marks the beginning of the day we can call ourselves a university community,” said Mayor James Atebe at Mission’s UFV campus, adding that post-secondary education is an economic and community developer.

The graphic design program is aimed at placing students in traditional design and print media, but will also prepare them for the web and smartphone market, video games and animation.

Heritage Park Centre, located by Stave Lake Street and 11 Avenue, has housed UFV’s Mission campus since 1996.

Hawes calls for review Abbotsford-Mission MLA Randy Hawes joined the opposition’s calls for an overhaul of services to developmentally disabled people, as the provincial agency responsible struggles with a growing and aging caseload.

CRMG sweeps elections Mission residents swept out the mayor and nearly the entire council in a victory by the Citizens for Responsible Municipal Government (CRMG) slate on Nov. 19.

Local business owner Ted Adlem replaced the two-term incumbent, earning 3,728 votes compared

to James Atebe’s 2,465.

Mike Gildersleeve took 827 votes, while Dan Williamson tallied 343.

CRMG came out with an early lead and held it throughout the ballot counting; the gap widened by a few hundred votes as each new polling station reported, and shortly after

8:30 p.m., Adlem was the winner.

Jenny Stevens, also with CRMG, received the highest number of votes (3,720). Sitting at council with her now will be Dave Hensman (2,546), Jeff Jewell (2,843), Tony Luck (2,956), Larry Nundal (2,946) and Nelson

Tilbury (2,638).

During his victory speech, a jubilant Adlem said that he “could not have dreamt we would have swept.�

He went on to say that with this decisive victory, things will be changing in Mission, and then thanked all his supporters.

To date we have raised $446,695 A large plaque will be erected in front of the new building to recognize donations of $1,000 or more.

What’s Happening in Mission

MAKING AND BREAKING NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS What new year’s resolutions should we make for the year 2001? The usual ones like trying to exercise more, going on a diet, or giving something up, just do not seem to work that well with most people. I very seldom get past January before my determined resolutions have gone along the wayside. Perhaps we should make resolutions that are not so demanding and that are more enjoyable for everyone. For example, we could try to be more positive and expect only good things to happen to us; every day we could tell our spouse that we love them; we could try to be a better listener and not do all of the talking; we could say something nice to someone each day; we could pray, praise and thank God throughout each day for all of His many blessings; and we could try to live a better life and set good examples for our family, friends and coworkers. Although making and breaking our new year’s resolutions helps to show us our faults and shortcomings, by following the love of our Lord and striving each day to be a better person, we will meet with God’s approval.

I can do all things through Christ which strengthen me.

The varsity Mission Roadrunners won the provincial champions this December capping off an incredible football season.

After losing in the semi-finals to the John Barsby Bulldogs last year, the senior football squad from Mission secondary edged out this same team 16-12 to clinch the B.C. AA title Dec. 3 at BC Place stadium.

The Roadrunners got off to a fast and early scoring start after quarterback Kevin Wiens popped a four-yard pass to Jesse Forcier who carried it into the endzone.

The second quarter saw no score, but by the third, Forcier rushed four yards again for another TD, and Erik DiGuistini nailed a 21-yard field goal to round out the Roadrunners’ effort.

Midway through the fourth quarter the Bulldogs had a chance to take its first lead, but fumbled on Mission’s five-yard line, the fourth drop of the day.

Barsby’s Robert Morris gave his team one final opportunity, intercepting a pass on his own four-yard line, but the ’Dawgs couldn’t gain ground and punted the football away with three and a half minutes left. They never got it back.

Mission’s players of the game were standouts Kevin Wiens and Jesse Forcier. Barsby lineman Jordan Kuziek won a player of the game award.

For head coach Kevin Watrin, this victory cements all the hard work of the past nine years.

“The emotions ranged from surreal to relief to excitement,” he said.

“We knew it would be a real battle ... Barsby is a very physical team, but we were expecting that kind of game.”

Ready For An Experiential Journey? You are invited on a journey into restorative justice that begins with a comprehensive & experiential 13 week training program that prepares volunteers to serve as Community Facilitators in providing restorative services to members of our community.

Interested in Social Issues & the Work of Creating Safe Community? MRR Core Training provides an extensive range of topics that explore the work of resolving conflict as part of a healthy and vibrant community.

Considering a Volunteer Position to â&#x20AC;&#x153;Give Backâ&#x20AC;? to Your Community? As a Community Facilitator you will be contributing your current skills, life-experience and skills acquired in the 13 week training to build a stronger & more inclusive community by assisting others to find positive solutions in a safe, time-tested & confidential setting. Based on the principles of restorative justice, you will work in partnership with other facilitators & MRR staff to provide restorative processes that guide participants toward mutually acceptable resolutions.

Why become a Community Facilitator? As a Facilitator you will benefit from acquiring the skills, knowledge & abilities to assist others to proactively & peacefully resolve conflict. Our Core Training & the experience of serving as a Facilitator have consistently been described as outstanding professional & personal development. We laugh a lot too!

The Commitment * Attending & fully participating in the 13 week training program (6:30-9:30 Tuesday evenings & 5 weekend days); * Attending evening training sessions once a month for a period of two years. * Facilitating MRR referrals over a period of two years (approximately 5-15 hours a month).

After attending a summer Bible Camp she entered into a wonderful relationship with the Lord and her spiritual pilgrimage began.

When she was 16 years old her parents sold their farm, moved to the Fraser Valley and began attending the Arnold MB Church. Margaret sang in the church choir, taught Sunday School and Daily Vacation Bible School, and worked with the youth.

Rather than return to public school she attended Abbotsford Bible School, graduating in 1953. In her final year there she met Werner Falk. After a courtship of 18 months they were in married in the Arnold Church. During the next several years three daughters were born to them. Margaret was a loving mother and grandmother and had a true servant’s heart. She did domestic work for many years to help support the family and her employers became very close friends. In addition to serving in her church, she volunteered for over 25 years at the MCC store in Clearbrook and sewed thousands of blankets and diapers to be sent overseas, saying a prayer for every child that would receive one of these gifts. In 2003 Margaret fell and injured her knee which led to other medical complications, eventually ending her stay on earth.

Margaret leaves to mourn her loving husband Werner of 57 years, three daughters, Cheryl (Ben Wall) and their children Charissa and Geoffrey; Coleen (Gord Lint) and their children Thomas (Roxie), Alison (Ben), Jared (Chandelle), and Brandon; Janet (Raynold Nickel) and their children Mollee, Tessa (Aaron), Sydney, and Madison, and three great-grandchildren.

We all miss her terribly, but rejoice knowing that she is with the Lord.

A memorial service will be held at Bakerview MB Church on Clearbrook Road on Saturday, December 31st, 2011, at 11:00 am.

In lieu of flowers, a donation to MCC would be appreciated.

It is with the greatest sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Lal Singh Narang. He leaves behind a large family and dear friends who loved him. Lal is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Maya Wanti (or as he always referred to her as his ‘lovely wife’); his children, Surinder Chawla, Palvinder Narang, and Debbie Narang; his grandchildren, Eric Chawla (Sunita) and Deepak Chawla (Mandy); and the new love of his life, his great grandchild, Aaliyah. He was predeceased by his daughter Rajinder Narang.

Lal was born in Dhudike, India and immigrated to Canada in 1969. Lal worked in the forestry industry as a lumber grader until his retirement in 2001.

Though he retired, he never sat still. Lal loved life and his family. He will be remembered for his strong work ethic and reliability, but most of all, for his warm, big smile. He was a man of few words, but his sharp wit, his easy sense of humour and great love for everyone will always remain with us. Lal will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved him.

A viewing was held on Wednesday, December 28, 2011 at the Elks Hall in Merritt, BC, followed by cremation in Kamloops, and then a Service at the Gurdwara (Merritt Sikh Temple).

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Lal’s name to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC, 1212 West Broadway, Vancouver, BC V6H 3V2, or the Canadian Cancer Society, BC & Yukon Division, 565 West 10th Ave., Vancouver, BC V5Z 4J4.
