Shop at locally owned stores There are many great reasons to shop local in your community. Not only will you be offered a unique selection of products, you will also receive incredible service from knowledgeable staff. Local stores are more likely to carry special goods you can’t get from large retailers, and it’s a great way to find items that will have your friends asking “Where did you get that?” In many cases, the shop owners have chosen what to stock and can answer your questions and give you detailed information. When you support local businesses, it’s good for the community. Local stores give communities a sense of individuality and character you won’t find anywhere else, and vibrant downtowns are the heart of many communities.

Busy park in the heart of Mission Fraser River Heritage Park is a main focal point of community life in Mission, providing a casual place to meet, relax or be entertained. More than a park, it is an historic site and one of Mission’s busiest entertainment venues. The park, located off Fifth Avenue on Mary Street, offers breathtaking vistas from a broad, 44-acre terrace on the east side of Mission. The Norma Kenney House, Mart Kenney Kinsmen Bandstand, and Rotary Flag Plaza are ideal stages for everything from performances to weddings and reunions. Other features include the Marcellus Rhododendron Walk, the Ernest Jacobsen Rose Garden and the Memorial Garden. The park also houses the historic ruins of St. Mary’s Mission and Indian Residential School. for participants and spectators has earned MRP the Track of the Year title for the Northwest Division eight times. The low elevation (24 feet above sea level) boosts horsepower, making it one of the fastest quarter mile strips on the professional circuit. Racing gets underway in April and the first major event of the season is on June 14 - 16, as the NHRA (National Hot Rod Association) brings high-calibre drag racing to town for the Lordco B.C. Nationals. Drag
racing is the big draw, but MRP has evolved into a first-class facility for all types of auto sports, including road racing, motorcycle road racing and motocross. Owned and operated by the nonprofit B.C. Custom Car Association, the drag strip provides safe, controlled racing conditions for those who range from casual hobbyists to internationally-ranked professionals. Blooming in Mission
A lot of beauty can be found around Mission from busy parks to private gardens “People, plants and pride … growing together” is the essence of the Communities in Bloom (CiB) program, an initiative in towns and cities across Canada work to beautify homes, businesses and public places through horticulture, tidiness, environmental action, heritage conservation, urban forestry, landscaping and floral displays. Members of Mission’s CiB Society work hard all year to promote, build, and maintain a town we are proud to call home.
We offer a 15 category local “let’s participate” event every spring, and present awards to winners when the national judges visit Mission. We invite you to enjoy our downtown, visit our tidy parks, heritage sites, see our Edwardian garden at the library, and hike on our well-maintained trails.

World class fishing
Mission is the Sturgeon Capital of the World and local guides can offer new experiences for all
Anglers can find some spectacular fishing in the Fraser and surrounding rivers near Mission. Mission’s sturgeon fishery is one-ofa-kind, and local fishing guides can give even seasoned anglers a new experience. The Fraser is considered one of the most productive salmon rivers in the world today, and in any given year 15 to 30 million salmon will pass through Mission. When salmon are migrating, fishermen line sand bars on sunny weekends to enjoy the outdoor experience. Mission has been labelled the Sturgeon Capital of the World for good reason. During spring, summer and fall, you can stand on the dike from Harbour Park to Dewdney Slough and watch anglers catch monster sturgeon. Although late summer through to early winter is best for fishing, sturgeon can be caught year-round if you learn a little about feeding patterns and migration routes. During summer months there are
plenty of salmon to fish for, including sockeye and chinook. The best spots are up-river from the mouth of the Sumas River and further east towards Hope. Gravel bars located along the river banks are the best location, so all you need to do is find access routes to these areas. You can find information at the Mission Chamber of Commerce. Salmon migrations begin in the Fraser River as early as April. Although the good fishing doesn’t get going until mid-July to mid August, you can catch salmon on the Fraser just about year-round. Check your local regulations for openings. Some of the best fishing is between mid-July August to mid-November. Anglers from around the world now consider the Fraser River one of the top angling destinations in the world, so Mission residents are fortunate to have this world-class fishery in their backyard. For more information, stop by the Visitor Information Centre on Highway 7.

When to drop your line
From Chinook to Pink, Coho and Sockeye, the Fraser River offers many opportunities to fish
Chinook salmon, Aug. 1 to Oct. 15 Chinook are the largest salmon, tipping the scales at 50 pounds and more, and they run every year. They have two runs, one in July that lasts until August, and a fall run that goes from September until November. Pink salmon (mid-August to midOctober) Pink salmon return to the Fraser every second year on odd years, and they will run again in 2013. Pinks are the smallest salmon, averaging between

three and five pounds, but they are also the most plentiful, returning in huge numbers often in the 10’s of millions. Sheer numbers alone make them easy to hook, but the fiesty fish are not so easy to land. Coho and chum (late September to late November) Coho and chum begin their annual return to the Fraser around midto-late August. The run really gets going in mid-September for those anglers fishing the lower river. This fishery is one of our most consistent
fisheries on the Fraser. Sockeye salmon (mid-July to mid-September) Sockeye salmon is one of the most popular freshwater fisheries, but the size of the runs and angling opportunities have become difficult to predict. To learn more about Fraser River fishing and dates of openings, please visit www.guidebc.com If you are looking for a guided trip, call toll free 1-866-771-3474.

Kilby Historic Site
Take a trip down memory lane and visit friendly farm animals at this B.C. Heritage attraction Kilby Historic Site is the perfect place for a trip down memory lane. Kilby General Store is all that remains of the original town of Harrison Mills, a once bustling community. The store was the hub of the town, serving as the general supply store, post office, gas station, hotel and meeting place. With saw mills and the train station close by, the store catered to everyone from locals to vacationers. Thomas Kilby opened Kilby General Store in 1906, and his son, Acton, took over the store in 1922, which is
reflected in the era that Kilby Historic Site represents. After a lifetime of collecting memorabilia, Acton turned the store into a museum in 1977. Kilby Historic Site celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2006. Today, the Kilby General Store Museum is packed with fascinating products from the 1920s and 1930s and is a world-class living history site, complete with costumed interpreters. Harrison Mills suffered many floods, which is why the town had connecting boardwalks. Kilby General Store still has its boardwalks

Westminster Abbey
Come for a quiet stroll, or sing daily mass, at the Westminster Abbey on Dewdney Trunk Road Thousands of visitors enjoy the serene setting at the Westminster Abbey every year. Perched high above the Fraser Valley, monks have carved out a nearly selfsufficient lifestyle here, raising cows, chickens and tending crops. The 28-year old dream was fulfilled in 1982 when the abbey was built. The church is 162 feet long by 110 feet wide at the transepts, and contains 64 stained-glass windows. The rainbowcoloured, 1.5 inch-thick pieces of glass make up windows that stand 22 feet high around the perimeter of the

church. A dome of coloured glass rises 60 feet above the alter, allowing shafts of light to shoot down into the heart of the church. In addition to the Abbey, the Seminary of Christ the King accommodates students who study for up to nine years to become secular priests. Visitors are welcome.

A long history to share
Past and current history makes Mission an interesting place to see and explore
Mission is home to the oldest dwelling in British Columbia, the first and only armed train robbery in Canada and the 100 Mile Challenge television show. Located along the banks of the Fraser River, the town was named for the mission built by the Oblates of the Immaculate Mary in 1861. The city grew rapidly throughout the latter half of the 1800s, with the arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1886. In 1891, Mission became home to the first railway crossing linking British Columbia and

heritage of the Sto:lo people, whose ancestors inhabited the area 9,000 years ago. Settlements and industries like forestry and agriculture, thrived through the next 100 years, with a hiccup in 1948, when the Fraser River flooded the entire area, including the downtown which was then located on the waterfront. The city moved its downtown core to its current location on higher ground, and has continued to grow in population, business and diversity ever since.

SPARK YOUR IMAGINATION EXPERIENCE AN AUTHENTIC 1912 GENERATING STATION
Generating history at the Power House The National Historic Site remains similar to the way it was first built The 1912 Power House at Stave Falls began working again in 2002, this time generating visitors rather than electricity. The National Historic Site of Canada remains similar to the way it was first built, and is now a firstclass interpretive centre. Your visit will start in the theatre, where the video Rain introduces you to hydro electricity. Then there is Electrica, a handson area, where visitors are encouraged to explore electricity and to think about B.C.’s renewable and non-renewable resources, hydroelectric generation, human and natural heritage, and 8
conservation. Then a trip through the Power House where the awesome turbines and generators, hundred year old equipment and original tools still remain and can be viewed up close. In the Historic Gallery, archival photos and artifacts encourage visitors to appreciate the hardships and effort to build the Power House and hear the stories of intolerable mosquitoes and no safety equipment.  The Power House offers pre-booked guided tours, a teacher resource guide to support the Grades 4 to 7 and a nearby recreation area which offers great opportunities to explore the natural environment. Enjoy and experience firsthand the history, power and place that is Stave Falls. For information visit bchydro.com/stavefalls or call 604-462-1222.
