he Champagne Orchestra, led by trumpeter Al Guraliuk and featuring Lini Evans on lead vocals, will be playing the sweet sounds of the swinging big bands starting at 2 p.m. June 3 at the Clarke Theatre. This nine-piece swing band plays the songs that filled the great ballrooms of the 1930s and ‘40s. The music of Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Les Brown, Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman, Harry James and many others, had people dancing

cheek-to-cheek during the golden era of radio, and their music is still popular. Artists such as Michael Bublé, Natalie Cole, Diana Krall and even Rod Stewart have once again popularized these timeless songs. Guraliuk has been leading the Champagne Orchestra for more than 30 years. Since receiving a bachelor of music degree from the University of British Columbia in 1979, he has been actively involved in Vancouver’s musical community. Guraliuk has traveled to New York, New Orleans and

Havana to further study music. As a jazz musician, Guraliuk strives to attain a balance between emotion and technique and, above all, a sound that really swings. He has been a featured jazz soloist at concerts held at the Queen Elizabeth and Arts Club Theatres. With a natural flair for showmanship and a commercial approach to music, Guraliuk is an ideal dance band leader. As musical director, he has performed with the late Danny Kaye, headlined Las Vegas acts like Danny Gans and Fred Travelena, and with many of Vancouver’s finest performers such as Dee Daniels, Denzal Sinclaire, Tom Arntzen and Tatiana Hancheroff. Evans is a Vancouverbased international entertainer with a stage presence that sparkles and a powerful voice. She has performed at numerous corporate functions and international festivals in addition to gala shows in Hong Kong, Paris, Osaka plus a command performance in Kobe, Japan. Evans has been a featured vocalist in Reno and performed with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. She has also performed at Toronto’s Skydome Stadium and was the only entertainer to sing for visiting Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji at a prestigious event attended by 1,000 world leaders. Her credits also include numerous television and radio performances. As a solo cabaret performer she has amazed and delighted audiences worldwide singing in eight languages. Among them are Cantonese, Mandarin and Japanese. Evans has also performed on U.S. cruise ships, at a variety of North American private functions, nightclubs and festivals. Since 2003 she has performed with the Champagne Orchestra.

All three meals are served in the lovely dining room and the menu offers a variety of choices prepared on-site under the guidance of Red Seal chef, Robert Wentz. ission Community Services (MCS) is a place that celebrates diversity, creativity, inno-

increasing needs for an aging population. Since 1972, MCS has addressed the needs of an older population with programs like Meals on Wheels, and later adding the Friendly Visitor Program, Seniors Connection, Lunch with a Bunch, Medical Transportation, and Seniors Shopping Trips. Meals on Wheels provides hot and cold meals to elderly community members who require this support. Meals are delivered by volunteers three days per week (Monday, Wednesday and Friday). The Friendly Visitor Program matches a senior with a volunteer visitor who connects with the senior by phone or in person on a regular basis. The program helps

seniors remain socially connected and provides an opportunity for seniors to access other services when needed. The Seniors Connection is an information and referral centre for seniors that coordinates other services as needed like medical transportation and a year-round income tax clinic. Volunteer drivers will take seniors to medical appointments, wait with them and return them home safely. Seniors Connection also facilitates an income tax clinic for low income seniors during tax season, also through the generous contributions of volunteers. Lunch with a Bunch takes seniors to one of the local seniors facilities and provides a

Seniors Week Celebrates the Valuable Contributions Seniors Make to our Community. The District of Mission, M Mayor and Council encourage you to take a senior out d during this special

social time for seniors to connect with others and have a great meal at the same time. Finally, Seniors Go Shopping puts three or four seniors together along with a volunteer driver. All of the Seniors Services provided by MCS focus on independence and well being by helping seniors remain in their residence as long as they can while also providing as many social activities as possible to maintain their quality of life. All of these services would not be possible without the generosity of the volunteers who contribute their time. And given the increasing number of seniors, MCS is also in need of volunteers. There is immediate need for volunteers in the Seniors Connection, Meals on Wheels delivery drivers, Friendly Visitor volunteers, Medical Transportation and volunteers to take seniors shopping. If you or someone you know is interested in this amazing opportunity to share your life with a senior, then please call Felice or Sandra at 604826-3634. Mission Community Services is proud to be serving the seniors here, and we look forward to another 40 years of helping seniors maintain their independence and quality of life.

The Community You’ve Been Looking For. Freedom, Comfort, Convenience

“It’s the only place I ever wanted to go” That’s what one of our buyers told us last week. And why did she say that? Because of our amazing lifestyle. We offer: • A great financial opportunity: preserve your capital, free up some equity, & never worry again about the real estate market • An instant community of friends and neighbours: enjoy a vibrant social life in our central amenity room and adjacent patio • Simplicity: the only decision you will have to make is what to have for dinner • Sponsorship by a trusted community-based non-profit organization

Life Lease vs. Condo The choice is clear. For downsizers, life lease makes a lot of sense. If you like the idea of no Property Transfer Tax, choose a life lease. How about no special assessments, ever? Choose a life lease. Want to avoid strata councils? Choose a life lease. Choose Cedar Valley Manor. The sole purpose of the society that will manage Cedar Valley Manor, the Mission Association for Seniors Housing, is to provide quality, nonprofit housing for retirees and seniors.

Lifetime Learning brings in Royal visitors June 2 H igh tea with royalty? Come and enjoy the fun with local volunteers and look-alikes in the roles of Queen Mother, Prince Philip, other family members, and Commonwealth High Commissioners on Saturday, June 2. This entertaining celebration of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II is being hosted by Lifetime Learning at the Cedarbrooke Chateau with master of ceremonies Neville Cox leading the fun. The opening procession includes a piper, Air Cadets trooping in the flags, local dignitaries, and, of course, members of the “Royal family.” Guests are encouraged to dress up in their royal fashions, represent a Commonwealth country, or simply wear hat and gloves, and have a photo

taken with their favourite Royal. Archival footage of the actual coronation in 1952 was broadcast on CBC, and guests will share stories and memories of the monarchy. Of course, a truly British high tea will be served. Throughout 2012, The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee will be celebrated around the world, particularly in the 54 Commonwealth countries which make up almost a quarter of the population of the world. Other groups in Mission including the Farmers’ Market will join the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, with special activities and events. For more information and to reserve a seat, please contact Lifetime Learning at 604-820-0220, or 604820-9300.
