MAC Legacy Program

If you have a child or grandchild who is approaching 25, encourage them to join the Club and reap the benefits of the Legacy Program. The Legacy Program gives a member’s children who have outgrown their family’s membership, at age 25, the ability to begin their own membership. The program dictates that any direct descendant of an active member in good standing with the Club does not have to pay an initiation fee when joining the Club. For resident members, this can mean a savings of up to $1,000. Many legacies that join the Club attribute their interest in the MAC to fond memories of childhood. With the legacy program, children are always exempt from initiation fees, no
matter their age. Also, their monthly dues and fees obligation are determined by their age and interests. “We have become the ultimate family Club—fully embracing all ages” said Julie Kueper, Membership Recruitment Executive. “It is wonderful to see a family of three generations participating in the wide variety of athletic, dining and social activities that are offered. T
here are two words that I am reminded of daily while talking with members and employees at our Club - Dedication and Passion. This last month’s events and the events coming up this spring have reminded me quite often… “Dedication and Passion” for the MAC is everywhere you look, at both of our fine locations. It is all around us. The recent Hall of Fame banquet honored members who showed their “Dedication and Passion” for the MAC by sharing their athletic talents over many years at the Club: Bob Gronemeyer (member since 1975), Tom O’Toole Jr. (1975), Tom O’Toole Sr. (1952) and Brian Rodgers (1995). You heard it from each of the inductees in their acceptance speeches that evening as they talked about all the memories and friendships they have shared in athletic competition, on and off the court. The 20th anniversary Hall of Fame members were recognized that night and a special thanks to fellow member Bob O’Loughlin for keeping us entertained and laughing as the banquet’s emcee. The 24th annual Employee Service Awards recognized Club employees who have gone above and beyond the call of duty, and those long-time employees celebrating special anniversaries at the MAC. I wish every member could attend this evening with the employees and see their “Dedication and Passion” for their jobs. It was a special evening and the employees look forward to qualifying for this event each year. I have had the privilege of working
with fellow “Dedicated and Passionate” Governors this year on the Board. Please thank your fellow members for giving of their time and talents to serve on the Board. We are a member owned Club and these individuals continue to amaze me with the value they bring to our Boardroom. The coming months will usher in the 100th Board of Governors at the MAC. Check out pages 8 - 11 of this magazine to learn more about this year’s Board candidates. Please plan to attend election day on Thursday, May 2 to support the next five Governors who will lead our Club. Not only is it a great day of camaraderie, it is a show of respect for those who have the time and talents to contribute to the betterment of our Club. Midway through our fiscal 2013 year, our Club is right on budget! More detailed financial report will be given at the Annual Business Meeting on May 9 at our West location, so please plan to attend and hear about our current financial performance and exciting plans for the future. Our departmental revenue continues to increase, with a 6% increase over this time period last fiscal year. It takes all of us and our “Dedication and Passion” for the MAC to realize our continued positive financial results, so thanks to everyone for your continued support of our Club! Now is the ideal time to start showing off your Club to family members, friends and business associates as spring approaches. I can tell you the St. Louis community is talking about the exciting things going

on at the MAC; I hear it every day from members and non-members. With more family activities, social events, exceptional food and improved dining and athletic amenities, it is an exciting time to belong to the MAC! All these items were heard loud and clear from you in the member survey last year and the Board and staff are responding. The improved amenities at the West location include new carpet, furniture and touch-ups to the Stan Musical Grill. The start of upgrades to the fitness area at West is well on its way and once completed, it will deliver much needed improvements with a new look, as the entire room will be repainted, have new signs, new logos; a new fitness check-in desk; new Nautilus circuit; new cable motion system that the MAC has previously never experienced; and new free weight equipment. The new pool furniture will be unveiled Memorial Day weekend when the pool opens. When it comes to “Dedication and Passion,” no sports fans can beat us Cardinal fans. Opening Day is around the corner, so make sure the MAC is your starting and ending destination throughout the upcoming baseball season. Your Club will help you avoid the crowds and parking hassles so you can better enjoy the game day experience. New this year, the Club will offer free round-trip shuttle service to Busch Stadium for every Cardinal home game. Park in the MAC garage, drop by the Jack Buck Grill for a bite to eat and head down to the game in the comfort of the MAC shuttle bus: That’s a winner! Stay connected to your Club, where camaraderie is experienced and relationships are forged.

Whether it’s workouts at West, swimming Downtown, tennis, squash, or shooting baskets with my boys, we have come to realize the immeasurable value of membership. When I first saw the sign in the gym “We do not stop playing because we are old, we grow old because we stop playing” it made a lifelong impression and I made the decision to join the MAC at the first opportunity. This sign went
missing for a few years but I am so glad to see it back. Mayor Jim Conway brought me into the Club in 1988; remember before swim suits? The idea was to play gin rummy but in those days the players had photographic memories and I learned my lesson shortly. But alas there were athletics, dining, and of course the bar, all of which I have enjoyed with many good friends over the years. I really enjoy swimming in the pool, possibly the best indoor in the whole US and I use it 2 or 3 times a week.

Champions of the Club are those who go above and beyond to fill the three Buckets (membership, rooms and catering), and help the MAC prosper. Each month, the Cherry Diamond will feature one of our many MAC Champions.
MAC Champion: Nick Bauer 1. How do you use the Club? I personally use the Club as my gym, where I work out and play basketball in the leagues. Our company, Empire Comfort Systems, uses the Club to host customers, sales reps and other visitors when they come in for plant tours, or training. 2. How did you get involved with recruiting new members? I try to recruit as many people as possible, mostly by word of mouth. 3. How many members have you recruited? Five or so. 4. How do you utilize the MAC catering department? We have our sales meeting every January at the Club, and we cater breakfast and lunch every day we are at The MAC. 5. How do you utilize the MAC overnight guest rooms? We use the overnight rooms for our sales meetings. Any time we bring in customers for a plant tour, interview a potential out-of-town employee, or when the reps come to visit the factory, they stay at the MAC.

West Massage Gets New Digs
O
ne of the massage rooms at West is being moved to an even better location! The new massage room will be located between the men’s and women’s locker rooms. This will allow members access straight to the showers and steam areas, and they will no longer have to dress and walk through the Club. The new massage room will have a spa-like feel, and help members stay relaxed longer after their massages. For members who prefer the existing massage rooms, one of the existing massage rooms in the Fitness Area will remain open for their convenience.
New Fitness Equipment at West
T
hanks to the contributions from January’s Gala and Auction, the West Fitness Department recently underwent a dazzling makeover. Members will soon notice new Nautilus circuit and Free Motion cable motion systems. The new equipment will allow members to exercise using the industry standards for efficacy and safety. The Free Motion equipment offers greater range of motion and limitless possibilities. The new Nautilus circuit offers increased opportunity to use the traditional circuit while maximizing fitness benefits. In addition, there have been upgrades to the West free weight area, and the Fitness Department has new flooring, a new fitness desk and a fresh coat of paint! Look for photos in May’s Cherry Diamond.
Club’s Top Swimmers Honored at Good Fellowship Day A group of MAC swimmers logged hundreds of miles in the Downtown pool throughout 2012. Their hard work and dedication were rewarded on Good Fellowship Day during a gathering on the pool deck. Swimmers log their laps each time they swim. The swimmer who completes the most laps in a month at the Downtown pool receives the honor of “Swimmer of the Month.” At the end of the year, one of the 12 monthly recipients is given the title of “Swimmer of the Year.” Each swimmer was awarded with a gift certificate for their accomplishments. Don Clooney was the 2012 swimmer of the year. He swam a total of 294.8 miles throughout the year. Even if you can’t log enough laps to get be a “swimmer of the month,” you can still be recognized. Any member can be an “honorary swimmer of the month” if you swim 20 or more days per month. Don Clooney, Jim McDonald, Andy Gleeson and Karl Holderle were awarded the “Honorary Swimmer of the Year” award.

MAC Wins Great Lakes Swim! The MAC recently competed against Clubs from around the country to see which club’s members could swim the most laps in one month. The competition wrapped up at the end of February, and MAC members swam a total of 1,133,968 yards, which is 644.3 miles. The MAC earned first-place in the competition! Way to go MAC swimmers! The MAC will compete again next year, with a goal of 700 miles! Thanks to everyone who contributed to the laps for showing support for your Club. Inspired by the hit television show the “Biggest Loser,” the MAC began hosting its own weight loss contest in January. This year, 10 members are participating at both Clubhouses. Included in the contest for each participant are health assessments, nutrition classes, as well as periodic weigh-ins. The winner of the contest will be the person who loses the most percent of body weight, not the most pounds. Fabulous prizes will be presented to the winners. This is truly a contest where everyone who participates is a winner. The contest participants are experiencing noticeable results. The competitive element of the contest and the spirit of camaraderie among the participants have served as great motivators. Read the May Cherry Diamond for final results.

The Class of 2013 Inducted Into MAC Hall of Fame
T
he MAC recently inducted some of its most distinguished athletes into the Club’s Athletic Hall of Fame. A dinner was held in their honor in the Missouri Room on Friday, March 1. The new members of the Hall of Fame are Bob Gronemeyer (Handball), Tom O’Toole, Jr. (Golf), Tom O’Toole, Sr. (Distinguished Service) and Brian Rodgers (Basketball). D. Scott Hunsaker, received the “Dan Barks Award.” Bob O’Loughlin served as the Master of Ceremonies and Sportscaster Frank Cusumano was the featured speaker at the banquet. The 2013 ceremony marked the 20th anniversary of the MAC Hall of Fame, and all prior inductees were honored. Portraits of each Hall of Famer are on permanent display in the Sportsman’s Club.

Keep your kids active this summer with sports camps at the MAC.
Specialty camps allow your child to focus on a particular sport they are interested in either to improve their skills or learn something totally new. The West Clubhouse offers children, ages 5 – 18, the opportunity to sharpen their athletic skills through various camps. The Club’s summer clinics are led by expert instructors, who have competed, and coached at, high levels. The following are the youth specialty sports camps. The MAC offers one of the top youth swim and dive programs in the St. Louis area. The Penguins compete against other swim clubs. The coaching staff has a proven track record of helping young swimmers and divers dramatically improve their performance. Registration for the Swim and Dive Teams will be held at West in the Poolside Café on Thursday, April 18, from 4 - 6 p.m. Registration will not be taken over the phone, so attendance to the registration event is encouraged. Help your children prepare for the upcoming swim season at the Spring Warm-Up.
This year’s Warm-up will be on Saturdays, April 13 - May 18 at the Downtown Clubhouse from 10 - 11 a.m. The cost for the Warm-up is $25. The clinic is for beginner swimmers and is instructed by MAC Swim Coach Lauren Fonseca and staff. Swimmers will become comfortable in the water and learn floating and breathing techniques. This year’s clinic will be held on Saturdays, April 13 - May 18, from 11:15 - 11:45 a.m. at the Downtown Clubhouse. The cost is $50 per child, and space is limited. Members, both old and young, gathered at the Downtown Clubhouse for the annual Good Fellowship Day party. Celebrating camaraderie and a commitment to fitness, a variety of athletic events were held, followed by a delicious lunch in the Sportsman’s Club. Lunch wouldn’t be complete without all the cold beer members could drink. Stylist Alisa McCulley, and Squash, handball and racquetball players competed in matches. Mike Fleming a manicure by Barbershop won the three-point contest, hitting seven out of 10 shots. Richard Joyce won Manicurist Dannelle Jennings. the closest-to-the-pin contest. His shot landed 10-feet from the pin. In the rowing competitions, members competed by age class. Mike Todd and Dustin Odham won the Under-40 class lightweight division, the 500-meter and the 2000-meter, respectively. In the 40-49 age group, Rob Wunderlich was the victor. Wunderlich also had the best times in each event for the day amongst all participants. Gene Frederic won the Under-40 class heavyweight division, and had the best times in each event. John Reichert won the 50-59 class lightweight division in the 500-meter competition. Governor John Noce and Gary Gossett won the 60-69 class heavyweight division, the 500-meter and the 2000-meter, respectively. Kenneth McKenna won the 70+ lightweight class division in the 500-meter. Dave Senay held all three of these records until Gleeson broke them on Good Fellowship Day. Massage therapists gave free chair massages, personal trainers gave free health assessments and the ladies from the Barbershop gave complimentary scalp massages and mini-manicures. Members also participated in free fitness classes including spinning, yoga for all, boot camp and core class. Whether members were competing, working up a sweat or just cheering from the sidelines, everyone had a great day at the MAC. Spinning class participants working up a sweat!

MAC SQUASH PROS INVITATIONAL APRIL 18 -20 Six squash pros from around the world will compete in an invitational squash event. Among those competing will be Todd Harrity, who currently attends Princeton University, and is the best ever collegiate player in history. He looks to be the best to compete on the International circuit. Also playing will be MAC pro Yago Cornes and Reed Whitney. Whitney will attend the Naval Academy in the fall and will play squash on their team.
TUESDAY NIGHT RACQUETBALL LEAGUES West hosts a racquetball league on Tuesday evenings. The group typically ends the night with a doubles match, and a visit to the bar in the Stan Musial Grill after playing. Even if members may not want to play at first, they are encouraged to watch others and see how they would match up against them. The league has all levels of players and a handicap. Don’t foul out by missing the registration deadline for the summer basketball leagues, which tip off in June. The MAC basketball leagues are a lot of fun offering a great workout and camaraderie with fellow members. You don’t have to play like Dwayne Wade to join the leagues either. The Downtown Clubhouse will have an Open League on Tuesday evenings. On Thursday nights, the action shifts to the West Clubhouse for another Open League. There are no age
restrictions, and you are welcome to play in both leagues. Sign up through the Club website (mac-stl.org). With the popularity of the leagues, you will want to reserve your spot now. Despite having one of the most beautiful PowerPoints anyone has ever seen, and spending five nights practicing your delivery to your bathroom mirror, you’re panicking. Why? All the bathroom practice in the world can’t compare to speaking before a group of people who are there to give you support and tips on improvement. Toastmasters can offer that, and much more. MAC Toastmasters is a group of professionals from a variety of industries, and walks of life, ranging from men and women in the growth phase of their careers to retirement and beyond. Members meet every week to build, improve and maintain their speaking skills. Want to sharpen your ability to quickly respond to a topic during a cocktail conversation or networking event? You can do that with “Table Topics,” where you will give a one to two-minute response to a randomly assigned topic. The Grammarian will attentively listen to you while you are speaking and note the “ums” and “ahs” and other areas to help you improve your ability to speak clearly, and effectively. Apollos Celebrate 70th Anniversary Friday, April 26 Join the Apollos as they celebrate their 70th anniversary at the MAC. The group has been going strong since its founding in 1943. Apollos perform two dinner shows annually, in April and November. In December, they perform at both Breakfast with Santa events, as well as on a tour of area nursing homes. Their performance on Friday, April 26 is appropriately titled, “Celebrating Our 70th.” The Apollos will sing songs that reflect the diversity of popular musical tastes over the past several decades. Each song was chosen for its popularity in the birth year of an Apollo. Classic favorites such as “Ol’ Man River,” “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes,” “Amazing Grace” and “Oklahoma” will be on the program along with period pop tunes like “Ghost Riders in the Sky” and “Kansas City,” plus modern-era songs like “Moondance” and “That’s What Friends Are For.” Music Director Marc Strathman will conduct the Apollos, along with a four-piece band, for this performance. 6 p.m. $34.95 + gratuity Downtown Clubhouse Call 314-539-4470 for reservations.

World Record Holding Racing Champion Rehabbing at MAC West “I know I’ll be running again one day. It’s not a matter of if, but when.” ~Gayle Stegmann

Gayle Stegmann is an accomplished marathon runner and is the current world-record holder for the Mule Marathon, 26.2 miles. She was seriously injured in October of last year after being thrown off of a mule that she was training. Upon her arrival at the hospital, she was diagnosed as an incomplete paraplegic, and was paralyzed from the waist down. Stegmann had lengthy hospital stays, surgeries and rehabilitation for her injuries. She has since worked extremely

hard to regain her lower body function. She has come far since her injury and can now workout on the elliptical machines and treadmills for an hour at a time. She works out at MAC West everyday that she is in St. Louis. She is working on complete form and is progressing well. “The employees at the MAC have been great” Stegmann said. “They have been cheering me on and supporting my progression into recovery.” Recently, Stegmann had a milestone
in her recovery. She was able to walk at 2.4 mph on a treadmill for five minutes, without having to hold on to the bars. “It was a breakthrough,” she said. Prior to her injuries, Stegmann competed in many high-level marathons and even qualified and competed in the U.S. Olympic trials in the Marathon. Her best marathon time was 2 hours and 40 minutes. “I know I’ll be running again one day. It’s not a matter of if, but when,” Stegmann said. “I have hope.”

SAVE THE DATE Walk a Mile in Her Shoes Join the YWCA Metro St. Louis on Saturday, June 8 and Walk A Mile In Her Shoes. Some of the toughest men in St. Louis will put on high heels and “walk a mile” to show their support for ending sexual violence. Downtown St. Louis may never be the same! The walk itself will be a light-hearted celebration of support, but the message behind the walk, ending sexual assault, is heartbreakingly serious. This is one way to get the conversation started. The Missouri Athletic Club is the start and end point for the walkers and supporters. As the American Red Cross Chief Executive Officer – Greater St. Louis, she is responsible for activities in the city of St. Louis and 72 surrounding counties in Missouri and Illinois; one of the largest Red Cross organizations in the country. Meredith Knopp She serves as Vice -President of Programs with The Mission Continues, a national organization founded in St. Louis to assist post-9/11 veterans committed to continuing their public service. She was the behind-the-scenes lead agent in presenting the January 2012 Vice President and COO for Junior Achievement of Greater St. Louis from November 2007 until June 30, 2011.
Debra A. Hollingsworth Rising through numerous management and staff positions, she serves as Regional Vice President-External Affairs for AT&T. Her oversight responsibilities include external affairs, the AT&T employee political action committee, community involvement, thirdparty relationships, AT&T Foundation grant and charitable giving programs for Missouri. Kimberly Ritter As Senior Account Manager at Nix Conference and Meeting Management, she became aware of sex trafficking in hotels. She helped create The Covering House, a place of refuge and restoration for girls in sexual trafficking and the Healing action Network (HAN), continuing to volunteer for both.
Amy Berg Throughout her seventeen year tenure with St. Louis based S.M. Wilson Construction company, she has helped grow revenues from $64 million in 1997 to more than $300 million today. It is no surprise that she became president of the company in 2012. Lieutenant General Kathleen M. Gainey, U.S. Army With 35 years as a U.S. Army Officer, she has held leadership and command positions across the globe. As the Deputy Commander of U.S. Transportation Command at Scott Air Force Base, she oversees 150,000 military and civilian personnel responsible for coordinating deployment of all military forces and equipment worldwide.

Jim Trotter is this month’s featured artist in the MAC Art Gallery at the Downtown Clubhouse.
Jim Trotter is this month’s featured artist in the MAC Art Gallery, at the Downtown Clubhouse. Trotter’s background is in photography. He pioneered the Gigapan imaging system, a robotic camera device which assists in creating extreme wide-angle images in high resolution. He also produces advertising photography, including architecture, products and portraits. He creates these
images using high-resolution cameras and Photoshop technology. Trotter has many galleries and businesses in the St. Louis area, and reproduces prints for artists. He recently produced a coffee table book titled, “The Best of St. Louis, 4th Edition.”
