GIVING BACK

The holiday season is also a time for generosity. The MAC has made significant improvements throughout the year which would not have been achieved without the dedication and enthusiasm of Club employees.

The MAC’s annual Employee Holiday Fund provides bonuses to employees and supports the Club’s charitable initiatives. Employees are grateful to the membership for this tremendous show of appreciation. This year, a portion of the fund will also benefit the Charitable Society for Children (CSC), reinforcing the MAC’s core values of tradition, community, and culture.

LOOKING BACK AT 2024

As the year draws to a close, it's the perfect time to reflect on the initiatives that sustained our Platinum Club status. Significant accomplishments this year include:

F Enhancements to the West Café

F Renovations to the Downtown Clubhouse’s 6th Floor

These improvements are a testament to our ongoing commitment to enhancing the membership experience. We’ve also continued our great tradition of hosting events that inform, inspire, and celebrate our community. In addition to an opportunity for camaraderie at Good Fellowship Day, we held outstanding Speaker Series events as well as Boxing and Wrestling nights. And we were proud to host the MAC Hermann Trophy Awards, U.S. Basketball Writers Association Awards, Women of Distinction Awards, and our Veterans Day Commemoration. Soon, we’ll be celebrating the Jack Buck Awards. A special thanks goes to our sponsors and the hardworking committees who supported these events, including the most recent Veterans Day planning committee — you truly knocked it out of the park!

LOOKING AHEAD TO 2025

Looking ahead, we’re excited for the upcoming year. We’ve already begun planning a range of new events and partnerships that will make next year even better. As Chip highlights in his article, additional improvements to both Clubhouses are underway, ensuring we continue to balance innovation with the history and tradition that define the MAC.

As we step into the holiday season, I extend my warmest wishes to you and your family. Thank you for being an integral part of the MAC community. Your participation, enthusiasm, and support are what make this Club thrive.

Here’s to a wonderful year ahead!

With gratitude,

LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

The Missouri Athletic Club is preparing to end 2024 in true MAC fashion, filled with fun for family and friends. The Club will ring in the new year with optimism and momentum! With many opportunities to celebrate at both Clubhouses, we look forward to seeing you around the Club. Don’t forget to call on us for assistance with your at-home celebrations. From housemade cakes and dessert specialties to entrées and side dishes, our team is ready to make the weeks ahead more convenient and allow you more time to enjoy this very special time of year.

Last month, I highlighted planning efforts of projects in the year ahead at both the West and Downtown Clubhouses. As we continue diligently planning improvements, management is developing plans for enhancing the social area near the West café and expanding the pool experience for next summer. Much of this planning incorporates feedback from members over the past year. Please continue to share your thoughts as we strive to enhance your experience.

In line with these projects, we will also take the next steps in our Master Planning process for the West Clubhouse. This includes a series of focus groups with Peacock + Lewis, a private club industry expert in master planning, as well as a survey of all members regarding West amenities and services. This process requires careful, strategic planning to define the next version of the West Clubhouse. Our goal is to maximize the West campus to ensure long-term, sustained success. We aim to

solidify our presence as an athletic club while enhancing opportunities for entertaining friends and family and elevating our youth program offerings. The Planning Committee and the Board of Governors will guide this process, and we will communicate updates along the way. We are also working on a podcast to provide insights into the process and introduce our architecture team.

December is the perfect time to recognize the efforts of our incredible teams across the MAC. A special thanks goes to the Downtown Sportsman’s Club team for enhancing the breakfast, lunch, and meeting experiences on the fourth floor. Thank you to Kelly Shaper, Mensur Becirovic, and Chef Bart Philipps for their dedication to “Better.” With a combined 43 years of service, Kelly and Chef Bart’s passion is as strong as it was when they joined the team.

January kicks off with one of our most anticipated events: the MAC Hermann Trophy Awards on Jan. 3, celebrating the top performers in college soccer. We look forward to seeing you there.

On behalf of the Missouri Athletic Club team, we extend our very best Holiday wishes to you and your families throughout the season, and for a healthy and memorable 2025!!

DECEMBER ANSWER:

Thomas Hart Benton, born in Missouri in 1889, loved to draw. His great-great uncle was Missouri Senator Thomas Hart Benton, and his father was a successful attorney and later elected to Congress. Benton studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, took classes and traveled in Europe, and from 19121935 lived and worked in New York City with his wife and two children. Like many artists, he would spend summer months painting along the coast near Martha’s Vineyard. Benton established his reputation in the 1930s with five mural projects that changed the face of American art and provided principal models for the Work Projects Administration (WPA) mural program. Thanks to these projects, Benton

quickly became one of the most famous and controversial artists. He was even featured on the cover of Time in 1934, the first artist to receive that honor.

Benton traveled across America in the 1920s and 1930s, sketching ordinary American life in a bold, rhythmic style. He was a leader of the American Regionalism movement, depicting working people in all regions of the country, including poor, rural areas, and drawing attention to issues he felt Americans needed to address. One of his most famous murals, A Social History of Missouri, is in the state capitol in Jefferson City, Missouri. In 1935, Benton moved to Kansas City, where he lived and worked in his studio until his death in 1975.

Absolutely! The MAC has a family atmosphere where many families have raised their children. All children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult when on Club property. Children under 18 are not allowed in the 1903 Bar and Patio, as it is reserved for adults only. Children under 18 are also requested to use the Girls’ and Boys’ locker rooms at the West Clubhouse. Please visit mac-stl.org/YouthPrograms for more information about youth programming.

Have you seen this painting?

Perhaps you have seen this painting while warming yourself by the fire in the 1903 Bar. It’s one of the few pastoral scenes in the Club’s collection by a 19th-century American landscape artist.

Forever Young Club Explores a Neighborhood Gem

“I had no idea all this was here,” “Way more than I expected,” “What a cool building this is.”

Those are just a few of the comments from Forever Young Club members who toured Midtown Alley on Oct. 22. The day was full of fun and surprises. The 2900-3100 blocks of Locust Street, once known as Automobile Row in the 1930s and 40s, now host a mix of creative businesses in repurposed car showrooms.

Neighborhood ambassadors Eric and Mary Thoelke opened many doors for FYC members on their visit. Highlights included a tour of Cherry Garage, where vintage cars are restored; meeting an artist who transforms discarded items into works of art; hearing from an awardwinning documentary filmmaker in his studio; and enjoying lunch at The Fountain on Locust beneath stunning Art Deco murals.

At the Angad Arts Hotel on Grand Avenue, members admired a dazzling art collection, visited a rooftop bar, and took in breathtaking views from the outdoor deck. The day ended with champagne at the Thoelkes’ stunning residence, which looked straight out of Architectural Digest.

The Forever Young Club continues to explore St. Louis and have a great time doing it!

Several MAC members who play in the Club’s basketball leagues volunteered their time at the Miriam School’s after-school basketball clinics. The Miriam School is one of three 2024 Charitable Society for Children charities.

Basketball has always been a large part of MAC history, and it felt only right to have MAC basketball players step up as volunteer

coaches at the clinics. Thank you to Carter Alexander, Michael Blood, Chris Hermann, Brian Huelsmann, Ross Knutson, Nat Walsh, and Jeff Wehmer for giving their time and talents to this deserving cause. Ahead of each clinic, participants enjoyed baked goods prepared by the MAC Pastry Team.

The Miriam School is the leading educational hub for children with learning

differences in the St. Louis area. The school empowers students by fostering confidence and building a foundation for success at its K-12 school and through outreach programs. Their students’ challenges often include specific learning disabilities, ADHD, autism, speech/language disorders, anxiety, and sensory processing differences.

MAC GENEROSITY MAKES BIG IMPACT THIS WINTER

The MAC Charitable Society for Children delivered the donations collected during the Clothes 4 Kids cold weather drive in September to support Caritas Connections, one of three 2024 Charitable Society for Children charities. Thanks to the generosity of MAC members, the CSC filled two donation boxes with coats, hats, gloves, and socks.

CSC co-chair Nat Walsh delivered the donations to the Saint Louis Crisis Nursery. The Saint Louis Crisis Nursery provides a short-term safe haven for nearly 4,000 children a year, from birth through age 12, whose families face emergencies caused by illness, homelessness, domestic violence, or overwhelming parental stress. CLASSICS AND

Cocktails

Sponsored by the Business Development Group

The annual Classics and Cocktails event, presented by the MAC Business Development Group and sponsored by It's Alive! Automotive, was a hit! Members showcased their vintage car collections in the West Clubhouse lot on Oct. 17, where attendees browsed the lineup and shared stories about their prized vehicles. It was a beautiful fall evening to enjoy hors d'oeuvres, signature cocktails, and mingle with fellow members.

The 6th Floor: A Blend of History and Modern Comfort

The 6th Floor of the MAC’s Downtown Clubhouse has long been a space for important gatherings and influential discussions. Since the Club’s opening in 1903, this floor has served as a venue for St. Louis’ business leaders and visionaries. Following a recent renovation, completed in September 2024, the 6th Floor has been thoughtfully updated to blend its rich history with modern conveniences, offering a welcoming space for today’s events. Upon entering the floor, you’ll find yourself in a refined yet comfortable landing area. The updated furnishings and décor combine the historic charm of the Club with a fresh, contemporary style. It’s a space that honors the past while embracing the future, setting the stage for the rooms ahead.

The 6th Floor offers three distinct rooms, each designed to accommodate a variety of needs. The Jefferson Room, just off the elevator, is ideal for smaller meetings or intimate dinners, with space for up to 10 guests. The warm and sophisticated design offers a balance of tradition and modern touches, making it a comfortable setting for both business and social gatherings.

Next door is the Lincoln Room, which mirrors the Jefferson Room in both style and capacity. Whether used for focused meetings or quiet conversations, this space offers a similar level of comfort and elegance, maintaining the consistent quality of design that defines the 6th Floor.

THE JEFFERSON ROOM THE LINCOLN ROOM

The Jack Murphy Boardroom is the centerpiece of the floor, with a legacy that dates back over a century. This room, which has hosted the Club’s Board of Governors through countless important decisions, offers a sense of history that is complemented by modern functionality. Accommodating up to 20 guests, the room includes a private bar, a wine cellar with a curated selection, and a dedicated dining area. With advanced audiovisual technology, the Boardroom meets the demands of today’s business needs, while still maintaining the elegance and character that make it unique.

Each of these rooms is designed to serve the diverse needs of MAC members, whether hosting a business meeting, a small dinner, or a larger event. With the room rental fee waived for members, these spaces provide excellent value, with setup fees only applicable if food and beverage minimums are not met.

The 6th Floor is more than just a place to host an event—it’s a space where history and modern functionality meet. Whether for business or social gatherings, it offers a comfortable, versatile setting that serves both the traditions of the past and the needs of today. We look forward to hosting your next meeting or event on the 6th Floor. Contact the Catering Department at catering@mac-stl.org or call 314-539-4470 to make your reservation.

at The Fabulous Fox Theatre A RISING STAR: EVER COGGINS

Young MAC Member to Dance in “The

Nutcracker”

At just six years old, Ever Coggins, a young MAC member, is stepping into the spotlight at The Fabulous Fox Theatre in “The Nutcracker.” Cast as a snowflake, Ever brings joy and determination to this cherished holiday tradition, featuring world-class ballet, whimsical puppetry, dazzling acrobatics, and Tchaikovsky's timeless score.

Nutcracker" production – a dream role for the budding dancer.

COACH MAGGIE’S NOTES ON HOLIDAY DRINKS

The holiday season is the perfect time for festive cocktails, but don’t let them ruin your nutritional plan. What you drink matters just as much as what you eat. Holiday drinks are often sweetened with syrups, fruit juices, or sodas, making them high in sugar. The extra sugar can cause blood sugar spikes, leading to increased cravings. For every alcoholic beverage you consume, try to drink a glass of water. This will not only help you stay hydrated but also reduce your overall alcohol intake. If you're looking to enjoy a drink while keeping weight-loss goals in mind, the key is to choose lower-calorie, lower-sugar options and moderate your intake. Here are some of the best choices:

CLEAR SPIRITS WITH LOW-CALORIE MIXERS

With no mixers, this drink keeps sugar low. To make: muddle orange zest with bitters, add whiskey and a pinch of cinnamon, then pour over ice.

DRY WINE

Opt for dry red or white wine, such as pinot noir, merlot, chardonnay, or sauvignon blanc, which are typically lower in sugar.

SPICED CINNAMON OLD FASHIONED

Since resistant starch isn't fully digested, it provides fewer calories than regular starches. It also promotes feelings of fullness, which may help with appetite control and weight management.

HOLIDAY MOJITO

Muddle mint and lime, add rum, and top with club soda. Sweeten lightly with monk fruit or stevia, if desired.

PEPPERMINT ESPRESSO MARTINI

Combine vodka, chilled espresso, and a drop of peppermint extract over ice. Shake, strain into a martini glass, and top with a sprinkle of cocoa powder.

SKINNY CRANBERRY VODKA SPRITZER

Combine 1.5 oz vodka and 2 oz unsweetened cranberry juice over ice. Top with club soda and garnish with fresh cranberries and a lime wedge.

CINNAMON WHISKEY APPLE CIDER

Mix 1 oz cinnamon whiskey and 3 oz light apple cider over ice. Sprinkle cinnamon on top.

CITRUS GIN FIZZ

Mix 1 oz gin and juice of ½ lemon or lime over ice. Top with club soda and add a twist of lemon or lime.

SPICED MULE

Pour 1 oz vodka and ¼ cup diet ginger beer over ice. Sprinkle with a dash of cinnamon or nutmeg, and garnish with a lime wedge.

POMEGRANATE MARTINI

Combine 1 oz vodka and 1 oz unsweetened pomegranate juice over ice. Top with sparkling water and garnish with pomegranate seeds.

SKINNY HOT TODDY

Combine 1 oz bourbon, 1 cup hot water, and juice of ½ lemon in a mug. Add stevia, if desired, and stir with a cinnamon stick for flavor.

Drinkwitz, along with other distinguished members of the St. Louis sports community, will be honored at the Jack Buck Sports Awards on Monday, Dec. 16 at the Missouri Athletic Club’s Downtown Clubhouse.
