LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

As previously mentioned, the MAC conducted a series of 11 focus group sessions with nearly 200 members in January and February. These voluntary sessions provided valuable insights and represented a broad spectrum of our membership — from those with just one year at the Club to others with more than 40 years! The collective comments were thoughtful and crucial to the MAC’s future. While the discussions focused on future needs, improvements, and services, many comments addressed areas we can enhance now to improve your experience in the coming months. Thank you to all who participated!

WHAT'S NEXT IN THE MASTER PLANNING PROCESS?

We will soon share highlights from the focus group sessions and expand on how Peacock + Lewis is utilizing the input. Additionally, the Board, Planning Committee, and management team will collaborate with Peacock + Lewis to distribute a survey to all members and their spouses/significant others. This survey will help us understand your preferences regarding amenities and services, as well as gauge satisfaction with the MAC West experience. Your feedback will play a crucial role in shaping a comprehensive Master Plan for the West campus. The Peacock + Lewis team will return this summer to present their recommendations to members. It’s an exciting time as we look forward to an even better MAC West!

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

As we step into March, we’re energized by the fresh opportunities that the new month brings. Spring is just around the corner, and with it comes a new season of events, exciting moments, and the chance to connect with each other. Of course, it’s also March Madness! Time to fill out your brackets and witness the thrill of the NCAA tournament as the top teams compete and the Cinderella stories unfold.

February was another fantastic month for the Club! A special thank you to Kurt and Celeste Witzel, as well as Nancy Suelflow, for making the President’s Wine Dinner an unforgettable event. Our deepest gratitude goes to all who attended the President’s Gala, and to Chip, Katie, Mensur, Chef Bart, and the entire team — your hard work truly shone through in the food, décor, and entertainment. Thanks as well to Past Governors Steve Albart and Chris Swank for their sponsorship in celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Rams’ Super Bowl win. And of course, we ended the month by celebrating two of our Club’s greatest traditions: camaraderie and athletics, during Good Fellowship Day!

As we look forward to March, here are some key updates and upcoming events:

KEY UPDATES

F Setting the Path for the MAC: We are making steady progress towards developing an initial strategic plan this spring, focusing on key assumptions, strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. We will also establish nearer-term clear, measurable goals across membership, planning, finance, governance, and management. As mentioned before, we’ll provide opportunities for input and participation as we move forward with more tangible outputs.

F Clayton Opportunity: With building ownership now confirmed along with financial modeling and operational plans updated, the Board agreed to proceed with the next step of presenting further details to membership for consideration and input. As such, be on the lookout for additional communications inclusive of Town Hall meetings, questions and answers and survey information. Your input is essential!

F Golf Program: We are excited to announce a new partnership with Norwood Hills Country Club. This collaboration comes after feedback from members and a thorough review by the Golf Program Task Force, following Glen Echo Country Club’s decision to dissolve its current agreement. For more information or any questions, please reach out to Rodney Stoyer at rstoyer@mac-stl.org.

GENERATIONS MAC at the Three Generations, One Club:

For three generations, the Molden family has dined in the Jack Buck Grille and explored, entertained, and hosted in the MAC’s historic Missouri Room!

Dr. Scott Molden was originally affiliated with the Club when his father, Dr. Chas Molden, gifted his mother a membership for Christmas. Like all good gifts, this one was for the entire family. The Club became a great way for the Moldens to spend time together while also being a place for Dr. Chas Molden to interact with his community and form lasting relationships. Dr. C. Molden was an active participant in the Apollos, the oldest men’s choir west of the Mississippi. He also competed in handball every Thursday. These activities were always followed by a trip to the Jack Buck Grille to unwind and socialize with his peers.

his wife, Mrs. Jane Molden, developed a deeper appreciation of dance when they began practicing for their son's wedding. They now use dance as a way to mingle with peers and stay active at the MAC. Dr. S. Molden also remains active in the MAC by partaking in the Forever Young Club’s outings, Book Club, and giving back to their community through the Charitable Society for Children. He also heavily advocated for the tennis courts to be double striped so he could stay active and play pickleball with his fellow members.

THE MOLDEN FAMILY’S ENDURING BOND WITH THE MAC

Since childhood, Dr. Scott Molden’s appreciation for the Missouri Athletic Club has only grown. One of his first memories of the Club was a fatherson event, which he was lucky enough to attend with his grandfather, Mr. R. Fullerton Place. He won a baseball glove at the event and was featured in the Cherry Diamond! Dr. S. Molden decided to get his own membership because of the convenience of the West Clubhouse, the Club’s many special events, and the gorgeous Missouri Ballroom. When he walks into the Missouri Ballroom, he just knows “something good is going to happen.” He appreciates the fact that the Missouri Ballroom has kept its historic flare throughout the years!

Dr. Scott Molden continues to be an active MAC member through his involvement with the Dance Club. He and

1st GENERATION

Dr. Molden upholds the MAC tradition by bringing his children and grandchildren to events at both Clubhouses. He loves to watch his young grandchildren walk into the Missouri Ballroom and stare in amazement at its grandeur. His son once praised a meal in the Ballroom, exclaiming, “This meal had nine proteins – it was the best meal EVER!” While Dr. Molden loves his children and grandchildren’s appreciation of the proteins, he is personally fond of the dessert table and its many options prepared by the Pastry Team.

The Molden family’s long-standing connection to the MAC is truly remarkable. The Club extends gratitude for their time and dedication as the Molden family continues to create new memories with the MAC!

The memories of multi-generational MAC members are being archived to honor the legacies that have shaped the Club’s rich history. Each story adds to the exceptional community that defines the MAC today. Members are invited to share their stories by contacting Elizabeth Brown at ebrown@mac-stl.org.

Frank Lloyd Wright believed architecture was the highest form of art – not simply a vessel for displaying art, but rather living, breathing art that people could inhabit. MAC BOOK CLUB

Thursday, March 13 F 5:30 p.m. F West Clubhouse

Thursday, April 10 F 5:30 p.m. F West Clubhouse

On Thursday, March 13, Jim Gallen will lead a literary trek through “Leave Only Footprints: My Acadia-to-Zion Journey Through Every National Park” by Conor Knighton.

When Knighton set off to explore America’s “best idea,” he worried his adventure would end up being his worst idea. A broken engagement and a broken heart left him longing for a change of scenery, but the plan he cooked up in response went a bit overboard. Over the course of a single year, Knighton would visit every national park in the country, from Acadia to Zion.

In “Leave Only Footprints,” Knighton shares informative and entertaining dispatches from what turned out to be the road trip of a lifetime. Whether he’s waking up early for a naked scrub in a historic bathhouse in Arkansas or staying up late to stargaze along our loneliest highway in Nevada, he weaves together stories not likely to be found in any guidebook. Filled with fascinating tidbits about our parks’ past and reflections on their fragile future, this book is both a celebration of and a passionate case for the natural wonders that all Americans share.

On Thursday, April 19, we return to the world of fiction as Cathy Beckette guides discussion of “Nothing Ventured” by Jeffrey Archer, the start of a brand-new series in the style of Archer’s #1 New York Times bestselling Clifton Chronicles.

William Warwick has always wanted to be a detective, and decides, much to his father’s dismay, he will join London’s Metropolitan Police Force. After graduating from university, William begins a career that will define his life – from his early months on the beat under the watchful eye of his first mentor, to his first high-stakes case as a fledgling detective in Scotland Yard’s arts and antiques squad. Investigating the theft of a priceless Rembrandt painting, he meets Beth Rainsford, a research assistant at the gallery who he falls hopelessly in love with – even as Beth guards a secret of her own she’s terrified will come to light. Through twists, triumph and tragedy, this series will show William Warwick is destined to become one of Archer’s most enduring legacies.

This partnership is a result of the input received from members and follows an extensive search by the MAC Golf Task Force after Glen Echo Country Club’s decision to dissolve its current agreement.

This exclusive collaboration will offer 100 membership opportunities, providing a distinguished new golfing experience for the MAC community. As the host venue for the prestigious Stifel Charity Classic, Norwood Hills is home to two meticulously maintained 18-hole courses and a professional team dedicated to delivering an exceptional golfing experience. Additionally, the MAC Sports Foundation Golf Tournament will now be held at Norwood, as well as other potential MAC events, further enhancing the value of this partnership.

All MAC members will have reciprocal

dining privileges at Norwood Hills. Similarly, all Norwood Hills members will be able to dine at both MAC Clubhouses. In the spirit of collaboration, Norwood Hills members will have limited access on certain days to the West Clubhouse’s pool as they complete their own pool renovations this summer, emphasizing a shared commitment to long-term success and mutual support. Additionally, Norwood members can access the Downtown fitness facilities for a fee, with classes offered based on availability.

The continued partnership with Golf Ambassador, Jay Delsing – ESPN Radio personality and former PGA Tour Golfer –strengthens the bond between Norwood and the MAC.

“As a native St. Louisan, Norwood Hills and the MAC hold special places in my heart. My golf game was shaped on the world-class courses of Norwood as I grew up playing and caddying there and my participation in athletics carried over to spending time at the MAC with my father. I am pleased to represent both of these premier clubs.”

COACH MAGGIE: LET’S TALK ABOUT WATER & THE BODY

Drinking enough water each day is a vital component of keeping a healthy lifestyle. It’s recommended to drink about half of your body weight in fluid ounces of water. For example, if you weigh 150 pounds, you should aim to drink 75 ounces a day. For those who are more active, an extra 16 oz for every hour of exercise is needed. For weight loss, I recommend my clients stick to 80 oz per day. However, for a diet with high sodium, starting a three-day water flush with lemon (88 oz., 96 oz., 88 oz. and back to 80 oz.) helps flush out any excess sodium in the body.

THERE ARE SEVERAL SYMPTOMS OF NOT DRINKING ENOUGH WATER:

Weight gain: Not drinking enough water causes water retention and temporary weight gain, as the body holds onto every drop to prevent dehydration.

Low energy: Skip the caffeine and drink water instead. Drinking water throughout the day keeps you hydrated; even slight dehydration can significantly drain your energy levels.

Less successful workout: The body cannot efficiently convert carbs into energy or deliver essential amino acids to muscle tissue without ample water intake. Not only will work out sessions suffer, but insufficient liquids in the body will hold back the breakdown of fat.

Hunger: It’s very common to confuse hunger with dehydration. If your stomach is growling, try drinking water and waiting 20 minutes before grabbing a snack.

Headaches: Before taking pain relieving medication, try chugging water when your

head hurts – you could just be dehydrated. If you are on a plateau breaker, add ¼ tsp of Morton’s lite salt to a glass of water and chug.

Constipation: Your colon absorbs up to five liters of water per day, which makes it easier to go to the bathroom. When your body realizes it’s not getting enough from your system, it absorbs more, making it harder to get rid of waste.

IT’S ALSO POSSIBLE TO DRINK TOO MUCH WATER.

If you drink a lot of water in one sitting as opposed to over the course of a day, your kidneys will not be able to keep up and expel the excess water. Excess fluid in the body disrupts the balance of electrolytes that are responsible for regulating water. If your diet is high in sodium and low in potassium, you are more at risk of retaining water. I recommend using ¼ to ½ tsp of Morton’s lite salt per day to help with water retention and to regulate electrolytes and blood pressure. Always speak with your doctor first if you take supplements.

THERE ARE DIFFERENT METHODS TO

START

DRINKING MORE WATER

If you’re a soda or juice drinker and are having a tough time making the transition to drinking water, try these additives: Hot lemon: Drinking lemon water first thing in the morning stimulates your digestive system. Although lemons are acidic, adding them to your water can have an alkalizing effect on the body, which may help balance pH levels and prevent bloating.

Cucumber: Helps with digestion, prevents bloating, and is very refreshing.

Mint: Adds a touch of sweetness without adding sugar to your water and aids in digestion.

Ginger: This anti-inflammatory helps with muscle soreness, joint pain, and boosts immunity. Start with a few thin slices or grate a tiny piece into your water.

Liquid IV: This electrolyte drink mix helps with hydration, typically contains sodium, potassium, glucose, and other electrolytes. Consult with your doctor before using it. Those who benefit from using Liquid IV take part in intense exercises or endurance activities. If you’re experiencing dehydration due to illnesses like a fever or vomiting, hot weather, or excessive sweating, it can help with rehydration. People with high blood pressure or sodium sensitivity should avoid consuming Liquid IV, as well as those with kidney disease or prone to kidney stones, those who are not active or dehydrated.
