LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

H appy New Year, MAC Members!

As we bid farewell to 2024 and welcome the promise of a new year, I hope you take a moment to reflect fondly on the past year, recalling the many memorable moments you’ve experienced at the Club. May these memories remind you of the sense of community and camaraderie that we cherish so much.

I want to thank you for your generous contributions to our Charitable Society for Children and your support of our team through donations to the Employee Holiday Fund. The holidays bring an especially busy schedule at both Clubhouses, and we are deeply grateful for the time, energy, and effort our MAC team puts into delivering exceptional experiences. Your generosity and support are truly appreciated.

In addition to celebrating the festive season with the Board of Governors at our Holiday Party, I had the distinct pleasure of hosting our Past Presidents for a wonderful holiday dinner in the Art Lounge. Their unwavering commitment helped shape the Club into what it is today, and their legacy continues to inspire us. We look forward to carrying on their example of service and unity into the new year.

We also had the honor of hosting the Jack Buck Sports Awards, where we continued the tradition of honoring top local sports figures. With the MAC Hermann Trophy Awards just around the corner, we’re excited to celebrate the top men’s and women’s college soccer players in the United States once again. This premier MAC event is sure to be another sellout!

As we look ahead to 2025, our Planning Committee will help us kick off the year with a White Board Session focused on strategic and annual planning. Special thanks to Chairman Governor Di Bisceglie, Vice Chairman Governor Kozeny, and Governor Prokopf for their dedication in ensuring a valuable session. I will be sure to report on the key outcomes in the near future.

In the meantime, a brief update on Clayton: In early December, we learned that the Pierre Laclede Center’s two-office tower complex was purchased by Hoffman Commercial Real Estate. With new ownership in place, we’re preparing for upcoming discussions by refining the experience based on input from our membership focus groups and ensuring clarity with our financial models.

Membership will receive more detailed information as it becomes available. We appreciate your patience as we continue to navigate these discussions.

As the new year approaches, many of us make resolutions, often focusing on health and wellness. If fitness is part of your resolution, remember that the MAC is here to help you meet your goals! Be sure to explore our diverse offerings, including classes and fitness programs designed to inspire and challenge you.

We’re looking forward to celebrating together at the MAC President’s Gala in February, featuring dance-floorfilling powerhouse entertainment. Additionally, it’s time for nominations to run for the Board of Governors!

We’re excited about the opportunities 2025 holds, and we look forward to continuing to enhance our Club’s offerings and create even more special experiences for you in the coming months. Whether through new events, improvements to our facilities, as Chip notes in his message, or simply enjoying time spent with like-minded individuals, we are committed to making the MAC a place where you feel inspired, valued, and connected.

As we reflect on the year, we also remember those loved ones no longer with us. May the coming year bring you happiness, good health, and success, both personally and professionally. I wish you a New Year filled with peace, joy, and fulfillment.

On behalf of the Board of Governors, I extend our warmest wishes for a wonderful 2025.

With gratitude,

LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

The MAC is coming off yet another record-setting December, filled with opportunities to celebrate with family and friends. I hope you were able to indulge in some of the holiday fun! On behalf of the team of employees, a heartfelt thank you to all the members who contributed to this year’s holiday fund! Your generosity is deeply appreciated!

January marks the beginning of planning efforts for the summer ahead. As the management team transitions from the holiday festivities to poolside fun, we are focused on preparing for swim team, summer camp, and more. Building on last summer’s success, we aim to enhance the overall pool experience, including upgrades to dining and bar services. Additionally, we plan to increase capacity with new poolside lounges, umbrellas, and dining options. Many of these improvements are inspired by feedback received by members over the past year.

So, what’s next? In January we will begin the next phase of our Master Planning Process for the West Clubhouse. The firm Peacock + Lewis will conduct focus group discussions with members in January and February, followed by a comprehensive survey of all members about amenities and services. More details about the process, including how members can participate, will be shared in the coming weeks.

I am continually reminded that the strength of the MAC experience is driven by our team of employees. Our collective success depends on hiring and retaining the best individuals, dedicated to providing extraordinary service to members and their guests. The Downtown Catering Team exemplifies this commitment to excellence. Led by Director of Food and Beverage Mensur Becirovic and Catering Director Courtney Hake, this team oversees all Downtown events, including special occasions like the Jack Buck Sports Awards and the MAC Hermann Trophy Awards, as well as more than 60 weddings annually — not to mention our cherished holiday activities. We are fortunate to have such a talented and dedicated team of professionals!

Be sure to explore the many Club activities featured in this issue of the Cherry Diamond to make the most of all the MAC has to offer.

On behalf of the team at the Missouri Athletic Club, we extend our very best Happy New Year wishes to you and your families in a year full of much health, happiness and memorable time spent together!

GENERATIONS MAC at the

For five generations, members of the Brown family have used the indoor pool and played basketball together at the historic Missouri Athletic Club. Today we celebrate their family’s commitment to the Club and share their stories.

The Brown Family’s Missouri Athletic Club Story

Breakfast with Santa and occasional dinners at the Jack Buck Grille.

Mr. Terry N. Brown, an Emeritus Life member and third-generation member of the Missouri Athletic Club, fondly remembers Saturday trips to the MAC, swimming in the lap pool and playing basketball with friends and family. Now married to Mrs. Carolyn Brown for 32 years, they continue to enjoy the Club. They brought their son Nathan to the Downtown Clubhouse, continuing the family tradition. Nathan recalls the Club’s more relaxed atmosphere in earlier times, when sunbathing and swimming norms were quite different.

Mr. Nathan Brown has continued the family tradition by becoming a member himself. He recalls walking through the Downtown Clubhouse lobby as a young child, impressed by the historic architecture and cigar displays. He cherishes memories of swimming and playing basketball and racquetball with his father at the Club. Over time, his relationship with the Club evolved. While he still enjoys working out and dining Downtown, he most treasures playing basketball with his own son at either clubhouse, hoping to create lasting memories.

When asked about his favorite MAC experience, Mr. Brown still highlights swimming laps in the indoor pool. He appreciates the community that comes along with working out in the morning. After swimming, he often meets with friends. What begins as reading the newspaper typically turns into catching up and reminiscing. Although their dining has decreased with age, the Browns still enjoy annual MAC traditions like

To Mr. Nathan Brown, the Missouri Athletic Club represents his family's enduring connection to Downtown St. Louis. For him, the Club reflects both the area’s rich history and his hopes for its future revitalization.

The Brown family’s history and legacy at the MAC hold a special place in the Club’s story. Their dedication is what makes the MAC a meaningful and memorable space for so many. The Brown family continues to create lasting memories at the MAC, and their presence around the Club is always appreciated.

The memories of multi-generational MAC members are being archived to honor the legacies that have shaped the Club’s rich history. Each story adds to the exceptional community that defines the MAC today. Members are invited to share their stories by contacting Elizabeth Brown at ebrown@mac-stl.org

MAC ART COLLECTION SPOTLIGHT Scavenger Hunt

JANUARY

ANSWER:

Thaddeus Welch holds a place of high honor among the rather limited number of fine American landscape artists. Born in Indiana in 1844, he began his career as a printer and quickly learned the art of reproducing engravings in sharp detail. He later switched to painting, particularly landscapes, applying his engraver's talent for detail.

He studied in Munich for six years, won three bronze medals in Europe and exhibited in Paris at the Salon des Artists. Returning to California in 1892, Welch quickly became famous for his California landscapes, of which this painting is among his best. Art critics at the turn of the 20th century praised his California pastoral scenes, which sold to collectors across the country.

His significantly younger wife, Ludmilla Pilat Welch, developed into an exceptional artist under his tutelage. Together, they produced a body of work that captures the beauty of rural California before the advent of development.

GET CARE FASTER

Did you know that you may not need a prescription for physical therapy?

It’s called direct access, and it empowers you to be your own health care advocate. You may be able to be evaluated and treated by a licensed physical therapist without a physician’s prescription.*

This means you can start treatment more quickly to restore your strength, regain your skills and reduce any pain. Depending upon the diagnosis, your therapist at SSM Health Physical Therapy may recommend that you follow up with a physician or other licensed health care professional before beginning your treatment.

Getting therapy first may help you:

• Save time

• Save money

• Expedite treatment

• Avoid opioids

• Prevent surgery

If your physician does prescribe physical therapy, you are not obligated to receive physical therapy in any specific facility. You have the right to choose where you want to go.

When choosing the right physical therapy provider, SSM Health Physical Therapy offers:

• Therapists who are licensed by the state and many hold advanced certifications.

• Participation with most insurance plans, which may help to minimize any out-ofpocket expenses.

• Submission of claims to your insurance company and help estimating any personal financial responsibilities.

• Examples of comments our patients provided so that you may learn more about their experiences with our care.

• Accreditation by the Joint Commission, which ensures the highest level of quality and patient safety.

Remember:

You are the most important member of your health care team and are free to choose the rehabilitation provider that can best help you meet your goals.

Stéphane Bréitwieser, history’s most prolific art thief of all time, executed more than 200 heists, often in crowded museums in broad daylight. His accomplice, his girlfriend, helped him amass a $2 billion collection displayed in his attic bedroom. In this spellbinding portrait of obsession and flawed genius, Michael Finkel gives us one of the most remarkable truecrime narratives of our times. A riveting story of art, theft, love, and an insatiable hunger to possess beauty at any cost, revealing Bréitwieser’s obsession and shocking end.

On Thursday, Feb. 13, Missy Bax will guide readers through Barbara Kingsolver’s “Demon Copperhead: A Novel.” This modern adaptation of David Copperfield follows a boy born into poverty and hardship as he navigates life with resilience, humor, and a talent for storytelling.

For monthly MAC Book Club meetings, email Book Club Chair Dr. Genie McKee at evmckee@gmail.com to make a reservation.

THE NEW YEAR with a Fitness Plan That Works

The MAC January Fitness challenge is so much more than a few weeks of focus. Matt (my husband) and I use the opportunity to “recalibrate,” so to speak. We are both competitive beyond words. Matt and I played Division 1 sports through college; fitness and competition are a way of life. This January Challenge allows us to not only compete with ourselves but also with MAC members we do not even know, with a focus on fitness and diet. The MAC Challenge is the perfect way for us to kick off the new year with positive goals and some friendly competition together.

The January Challenge was exactly what I needed. It was a huge motivator to lose weight and improve my overall health. The weekly challenges, along with Courtney’s encouragement, certainly helped me achieve my goal! Because of the challenge, I’ve been consistently working out and I’ve continued my fitness journey. A big thank-you to the MAC for making this challenge available to the membership!

COACH MAGGIE’S NOTES ON

NEW YEARS RESOLUTION

Happy New Year! With each new year, many of us feel motivated and eager to lose weight or start a new fitness regimen. By March, however, those resolutions often fade. As we move into 2025, we all have certain areas in our lives we would like to improve - whether it’s weight loss, better health, or more energy. I’d love to help you set a plan that lasts. If your main goal is getting leaner or improving your fitness, the MAC’s on-site personal trainers can guide you to success.

Setting realistic New Year’s goals requires self-awareness, thoughtful planning, and practicality. Follow this stepby-step guide to make your New Year’s resolutions stick:

1. REFLECT ON THE PAST YEAR

Look at what achievements and challenges you overcame. Were there habits or approaches that worked well for you? Where do you need to adjust?

2. DEFINE YOUR PURPOSE

Be specific. Instead of saying, “I want to be healthier,” start with a concrete goal

like, “I want to walk 30-minutes a day.” Clarify your motivation: is it to improve your health, gain more energy, or feel more comfortable in your clothes?

3. SET SHORT-TERM AND LONG-TERM GOALS

For the short-term, focus on small milestones, such as losing 8-10 pounds in January. For the long-term, establish a target date for achieving your overall goal.

4. PLAN MEALS AND WORKOUTS

Prepare meals in advance so you know exactly what you’ll eat each day. Commit to specific workout sessions and schedule them into your day, just as you would for an important meeting or appointment.

5. TRACK YOUR PROGRESS

Keep a journal and take note of what you eat, allowing a chance to see where you are making progress and where you may need to make changes. Writing down each time you work out will also help you see exactly how much time you spend on exercise. Seeing your efforts on paper can be incredibly motivating!

EXAMPLE OF A THREE-MONTH

6. PLAN FOR SETBACKS

Challenges are inevitable. Anticipate them and develop strategies to stay on track. Focus on progress, not perfection, and be prepared to adjust as needed.

7. CELEBRATE NON-SCALE VICTORIES

Recognize improvements in areas like sleep, energy, strength, mood, or stamina. Notice how your clothes fit better or how your endurance has grown.

WEIGHT

LOSS PLAN

MARCH JANUARY

Build habits like meal-prepping, regular exercise, and increasing water intake.
