LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

As we step into February, it’s exciting to think that the harshest winter weather is hopefully behind us, making way for a season of renewal. For those of you who made a resolution to prioritize fitness in the new year, I trust you are staying on track and taking full advantage of the numerous classes and programs available at both of our Clubhouses.

I’m pleased to share some important updates and key events to look forward to in the coming months. We’re thrilled to report a strong finish to 2024! Operating cash flow exceeded expectations, up 13% from our FY25 budget and 28% from the previous year. This impressive growth reflects the commitment of our members to the Club, and for that, we thank you. A special thank you as well to the entire MAC team for their tireless work in creating memorable holiday experiences for all. Your dedication to excellence has not gone unnoticed!

Last month, we kicked off a strategic planning session focused on defining a roadmap for the future of the Club. By building on the work of previous Planning Committees, we are laying out key opportunities and priorities across our five core pillars: Relevance & Sustainability, Membership Experience, Organizational Excellence, Civic Leadership & Engagement, and Financial Stewardship. We’re excited to present the initial version of this plan in the spring. As valued shareholders in the Club’s future, we’ll ensure you have opportunities to understand and contribute to this evolving process. Many thanks to our Strategic Planning Taskforce for their vision and commitment!

We’ve also reinitiated a taskforce to further explore the membership experience and financial modeling around the Clayton opportunity. Discussions with the new Pierre Laclede Center landlord are progressing positively, and we’re working closely with the taskforce to determine the best path forward. In the coming weeks, we look to share details about membership Town Halls to discuss further details and engage in meaningful conversations about what this opportunity could mean for our Club, our members, and the St. Louis community at large.

Following Glen Echo Country Club’s decision to end the Dual Membership program with the MAC, we’ve been actively seeking new opportunities for our golf members. We’ve found a promising partnership with Norwood Hills Country Club, and details were shared last week. Please contact Rodney Stoyer at 314-539-4429 or rstoyer@mac-stl.org for program specifics.

In January, we held our Board vote for the 2025-2026 officer class. A heartfelt congratulations to President-elect Mike Kozeny, First Vice President Adrian Di Bisceglie, Second Vice President Carrie Burggraf, Secretary Dave Sweeney, and Treasurer Matt Masiel! These leaders will officially assume their positions in May, and we look

forward to their guidance and leadership in the coming year. We are now accepting nominations for the 2025 Board of Governors election through Feb. 25. Mark your calendars for our Associates Election Rooftop Happy Hour on Wednesday, April 23 — a fantastic opportunity to meet and connect with fellow members and those running for the Board.

As part of our commitment to giving back, we’re excited to share the three charities the MAC’s Charitable Society for Children will be supporting in 2025: Books for STL Kids, Butterfly Kisses Alliance, and KidSmart STL. I was honored to attend the check presentation on Wednesday, Jan. 22 for the 2024 charities. The Club’s generosity shined as each charity was given a check for more than $20,000.

There are several exciting events at the Club in the coming months. Don’t miss the MAC President’s Gala on Feb. 15, a glamorous evening of dining, dancing and celebration! Join us as we toast to another successful year at the Club and dance the night away to live music from The Downtown Band. On Feb. 20, the much-anticipated MAC Speaker Series celebrating the St. Louis Rams’ 25-Year Super Bowl Anniversary will welcome legendary Rams Coach Dick Vermeil and former players to the Downtown Clubhouse. Also in February, Good Fellowship Day is an iconic MAC tradition combining fitness, friendly competition and camaraderie. Be sure to join the fun on Feb. 22 with your fellow members!

The Board proclaimed Jan. 13, 2025, Ed Corich Day at the MAC. That was the day Ed achieved 70 years of membership! Ed and Pat have been stalwart supporters of the MAC for seven decades — quite the milestone! On Jan. 16, the Club celebrated Ed and Pat with a special luncheon, attended by all the Corich children. Ed and Pat love the MAC, and we all love them! Congratulations to Ed and Pat.

We’re also excited to celebrate Jeff Tuhro on his 25th Anniversary with the MAC! Jeff, thank you for your unwavering leadership across Athletics over the years, and we look forward to many more years of success together.

As you can see, 2025 is off to a fantastic start, and we have so much to look forward to in the coming months. Thank you for being a valued member of our Club. We look forward to seeing you at these exciting events and continuing to strengthen our vibrant community together.

Please also take a moment to read the In Memoriam section on the following page where we honor the memories of those who have recently passed.

With gratitude,

REMEMBERING THE MAC MEMBERS WHO PASSED IN 2024

LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

The Missouri Athletic Club continues to thrive with an extraordinary calendar of events and activities planned for February. Beyond great workouts and social gatherings, both Clubhouses are constantly abuzz with energy. Please take the time to review the calendar to maximize your MAC experience.

Our Master Planning process continues with Peacock + Lewis architects and planners. All members and their spouses/significant others are invited to participate in focus group sessions on Feb. 3 and 4 at both Clubhouses. The January sessions yielded valuable insights from our diverse membership, which includes more than 7,500 members and their families. We heard from longtime members of 40plus years alongside those who joined recently, reinforcing our dual mission as both an athletic and family club. Their thoughtful engagement and varied perspectives on how they use the Club will help shape our future. Please register on the MAC app today for a February session. Additionally, we'll conduct a comprehensive membership survey this spring as another vital component of the planning process.

Based on ongoing member feedback, we are addressing a frequent concern about private events at the West Clubhouse's 1903 Bar and Dining Room. To ensure these spaces remain available for members to enjoy social time with family and friends, we will no longer accept reservations for private events in the 1903 Bar.

Additionally, we will restrict private functions in the 1903 Dining Room to times when it is typically closed. While we will honor existing commitments, no new private events will be scheduled. This space limitation underscores the importance of our current Master Planning process.

I am proud to recognize our Athletic Director Jeff Tuhro on his 25th anniversary with the Missouri Athletic Club. Please join me in celebrating Jeff’s outstanding career and commitment to the MAC by reading his special feature in this month’s Cherry Diamond. Jeff, we look forward to the next 25!

We also celebrate an exceptional member milestone: Ed Corich marks 70 years of MAC membership, with his wife Pat sharing 68 of those years by his side. It was my honor to attend a Jan. 16 luncheon recognizing his remarkable dedication to the Club.

I look forward to seeing you around the Club. As always, please let me or any team member know how we can enhance Your MAC experience!

Best wishes,

Club

MAC Celebrates Ed Corich's Remarkable 70-Year Membership Milestone

On Jan. 16, 2025, the MAC honored Ed Corich with a special luncheon commemorating his 70-year membership. This milestone places Mr. Corich among an elite group

of members who have reached this extraordinary achievement. The Club was delighted to host his family and friends in celebrating this achievement.

From Championships to Lifelong Relationships:

JEFF TUHRO REFLECTS ON 25 YEARS AT THE MAC

Athletic Director Jeff Tuhro recently sat down with General Manager Chip Misch to reflect on his quarter-century journey at the Missouri Athletic Club. In this candid conversation, Tuhro shares insights into his motivations, memorable moments and the lasting legacy he hopes to leave as he looks toward eventual retirement.

Q: After 25 years, what keeps you motivated to come to work every day?

A: The members and their children provide constant inspiration through their enthusiasm for Club activities. However, my primary motivation comes from my Team and peers. After 25 years, these relationships have deepened into family-like bonds.

Q: Who has had the greatest influence on you during your time at the Club?

A: While various members, colleagues and Athletic Directors around the country have shaped my career, no one has had a bigger influence on me than my wife Stephanie. Many of you know her but may not know her well enough to know how great of an individual she is. She motivates me to be better in all aspects of life every day.

Q: What has been your most memorable moment at the MAC?

A: Several moments stand out: witnessing the Club’s National Athletic Club Association of Directors (NACAD) National Basketball Championship victory in Atlanta in 2006; completing the West Clubhouse's fitness renovation; and receiving the NACAD Athletic Director of the Year award for North America at the National Conference in Calgary.

Q: What legacy do you hope to leave at the Club?

A: The MAC has drastically transformed during my tenure, and I am glad to have been a part of it all. Members regularly share how our team has positively influenced their families’ lives. The growth across all our programs at both Clubhouses has been remarkable, made possible by our dedicated staff’s collective efforts.

Q: When the day comes, what are your retirement plans?

A: I look forward to increasing my travel, spending more time outdoors, whether that’s playing golf, being at the lake, or enjoying many of the outdoor hobbies I have. Most likely I will spend a lot of my retirement at Table Rock Lake as our family already has tons of memories there, and we have a lot of friends and family there.

Q: What advice would you give to a new MAC employee?

A: Give it your all here, and get to know people. When I joined the Club, I planned to stay for one year while awaiting acceptance to the police academy. Twenty-five years later, I remain here because the Club creates an exceptional environment that fosters longterm commitment. Look at all the long-term employees here. It’s pretty special. That doesn’t happen at many places, particularly in the club industry. It’s a special place and we can’t lose that.

Q: Is there anything else you would like to share?

A: Just that I want to say "thank you" to everyone for allowing me to be a part of this for the past 25 years.

GENERATIONS MAC at the Fifty Years of Friendship:

Mrs. Janet Musial Schwarze and Ms. Constance Schwarze have been long-time friends and sisters-in-law for more than 50 years. Their shared memories are deeply rooted in the historic Missouri Athletic Club.

Janet Musial Schwarze has been affiliated with the Missouri Athletic Club for as long as she can remember—from growing up at the Club to becoming a member herself, now for over 53 years. Her father, Stan Musial, the legendary Cardinals player, became a member of the Club in the 1950’s. He joined the MAC because he recognized the unique atmosphere and valued being part of a community that celebrated St. Louis. Mr. Musial is remembered not only as an accomplished athlete, but also a businessman and a passionate advocate for the St. Louis economy.

lunch, where the team provided exceptional care. His legacy continues at the Missouri Athletic Club through the Stan Musial Grille. When visiting the West Clubhouse, Janet always touches of her father’s framed photo as a way of saying “hello.”

Janet recalls a favorite childhood memory with her father in the Missouri Ballroom at the Downtown Clubhouse: a father-daughter dance where she stood on her fathers’ shoes as they danced around the room, her father gently guiding her through the steps.

Stan Musial arrived in St. Louis in the early 1940s, where his character and kindness quickly endeared him to the community. Admired as both a gentleman and a gentle man, he frequented the Downtown Clubhouse and strongly supported the opening of the West Clubhouse. His affection for the West Clubhouse grew over the years. Up until his last days, Janet’s son, Brian, would take Mr. Musial to the West Clubhouse for

After her marriage, Janet shared many special moments at the Club with her husband, Marty Schwarze. She treasures Easter Brunch and fond memories of dining at the Jack Buck Grille. She jokes about feeling special when she visited the MAC with her husband or father, as it felt like she was gaining entry to a men’s only club. As she navigates life after the recent passing of Marty, she looks forward to rediscovering the Club alongside her sister-in-law, appreciating the MAC as a timeless place to create memories with loved ones.

Ms. Constance Schwarze, a thirdgeneration member of the Missouri Athletic Club, cherishes the Club’s traditions and her family’s longstanding connection to it. While

Janet Musial Schwarze and Constance Schwarze Cherish Shared Memories at the Club

sorting through her home, she often finds vintage editions of the “Cherry Diamond,” likely her grandfather’s. Dr. Martin Glaser, her grandfather, was a prominent figure in St. Louis who frequented the MAC for lunch and business meetings.

Constance fondly remembers fatherdaughter dances in the Missouri Ballroom, which made her feel incredibly special as a young girl. One year, when her father, Mr. William Schwarze, was unwell, her grandfather stepped in to escort her. She also loves the tradition of taking photos from the balcony during Ballroom events, a practice she hopes will continue during her niece’s upcoming wedding there.

Constance also reminisces about hearing stories of men swimming laps in the indoor pool. Her family still cherishes Easter Brunches at the Club, one of their favorite ways to spend time together. She is eager to continue making new memories at the MAC.

The memories of multi-generational MAC members are being archived to honor the legacies that have shaped the Club’s rich history. Each story adds to the exceptional community that defines the MAC today. Members are invited to share their stories by contacting Elizabeth Brown at ebrown@mac-stl.org

Art LIVING IN

MAC ART SOCIETY PRESENTS ARCHITECTURAL EXCELLENCE AND CLASSICAL MUSIC

Celebrating 'The Year of the Architect' with Frank Lloyd Wright Terrace Doors Display

A replica of the iconic Frank Lloyd Wright terrace doors from the Ebsworth Park house are now on display in the Art Lounge of the Downtown Clubhouse. The MAC Art Society coordinated their delivery as they celebrate “The Year of the Architect” with this “Living in Art” installation. Frank Lloyd Wright believed that architecture was the highest form of art – not simply a vessel for displaying art, but rather living, breathing art that people could inhabit. This revolutionary perspective resulted in Wright’s “Usonian” designs, including the one he created for artist Russell Kraus and his wife Ruth in 1951. The Frank Lloyd Wright House in Ebsworth Park personifies the integration of architecture and art. With its geometric patterns, thoughtful proportions, and harmony with the surrounding landscape, it makes a complete artistic statement.

In celebration of the MAC being the temporary home of the full-size replica terrace doors, the MAC Art Society is hosting its “Living in Art” kickoff event on Tuesday, March 18 at the Downtown Clubhouse which is sure to be insightful. Join fellow members to learn more about the display as well as Frank Lloyd Wright’s impact on architecture. To book a guided tour of the Frank Lloyd Wright House, go to ebsworthpark.org

The Classical Guitar Society is a non-profit arts agency whose mission is to promote positive impact through classical guitar performance and education. Founded in 1963 by students of George C. Krick, the society is the third oldest organization in the nation centered around classical guitar. The society seeks to serve the St. Louis community through innovative, high-quality, and relevant programming.

The Gateway Guitar Quartet consists of local St. Louis guitarists Paul Kreter, Jeffrey Sieth, Stephen Rekas, and Bob Wooldridge who perform a repertoire of selections from the Renaissance, Baroque and Classical periods and the national music of countries such as Spain and Brazil. Members Paul and Jeff also arrange music from other genres for the group including beautiful folk and popular tunes.

A three-course dinner special with a glass of wine will be offered in the Jack Buck Grille after the event ($45 per person). Additional wine pairing available for an additional fee. Call 314-539-4417 for reservations.

MAC BOOK CLUB

Thursday, March 13 F 5:30 p.m. F West Clubhouse

Amidst winter chill, the Book Club draws near the fire with “Demon Copperhead: A Novel” by Barbara Kingsolver. On Thursday, Feb. 13, Missy Bax will guide us through this saga about a young boy born into poverty and hardship who navigates life’s challenges with resilience, humor and a gift for storytelling in this modern-day adaptation of David Copperfield.

On Thursday, March 13, Jim Gallen will lead us on a literary trek through “Leave Only Footprints: My Acadia-to-Zion Journey Through Every National Park” by Conor Knighton. When Knighton set off to explore America’s “best idea,” he worried his exploration would end up being his worst idea. A broken engagement and a broken heart had left him longing for a change of scenery, but his plan went overboard. Over the course of a single year, Knighton would visit every national park in the country, from Acadia to Zion.

In “Leave Only Footprints,” Knighton shares informative and entertaining dispatches from what turned out to be the road trip of a lifetime. Whether he’s waking up early for a naked scrub in a historic Arkansas bathhouse or staying up late to stargaze along the loneliest highway in Nevada, Knighton weaves together the type of stories not found in guidebooks. Through his unique lens, America the Beautiful becomes America the Captivating, the Hilarious, and the Inspiring.

Military History Club Welcomes Author J.J. Valdes

TUESDAY, FEB. 25 F 11:30 A.M. F DOWNTOWN CLUBHOUSE

The Military History Club turns its attention to the Caribbean as it welcomes a Zoom appearance by J.J. Valdes, author of the recently released “Besieged Beachhead: The Cold War Battle for Cuba at the Bay of Pigs.”

Early on April 17, 1961, Brigade 2506 –consisting of 1,400 Cuban exiles trained by the CIA in Guatemala – began landing at the Bay of Pigs. Nearly everything went wrong. Boat engines failed, coral reefs snarled landing craft, Castro’s planes destroyed

ships, and expected support within Cuba did not materialize. Khrushchev rattled the nuclear saber, spooking Kennedy from ordering assistance he was reluctant to provide. Over the course of three days, the Brigade obstinately defended a rapidly shrinking beachhead, but they were no match for the air and ground forces Castro threw against them. By April 19, the invasion had failed, and 1,200 scattered survivors were captured over the ensuing days. The

Bay of Pigs disaster would set the stage for the Cuban Missile Crisis 18 months later and shape U.S.-Cuba relations up until the present. A native of Cuba and a longtime historical researcher for U.S. government agencies, Valdes brings a unique perspective to this very consequential Cold War flashpoint. Join us as we explore this smallscale invasion that continues to shape our hemisphere today. Register on the MAC app or call 314-539-4470.

COACH MAGGIE’S NOTES ON COLLAGEN

ligaments – providing structure, strength and elasticity. Collagen powder has gained popularity as a dietary supplement, essential for skin, hair, nails, joints, and overall connective tissue health. The collagen powder found in nutritional supplements is made from animal tissues including the skin and bones of cattle and pigs, fish scales, and eggshells. When purchasing collagen powder, consider the following:

F If you have kidney disease or suffer from kidney stones, consult your doctor before use.

F Pregnant and breastfeeding women should also consult a doctor before consumption.

Collagen production decreases with age, but especially among those aged 40-50 and women who are post-menopausal. Those who are over the age of 25, who experience joint pain, skin concerns, weak nails, and those recovering from injuries should consider adding collagen supplements to their routine.

There are 28 identified types of collagens, but the most common and relevant are listed below. You should choose one based on your personal health goals.

Type I: Found in skin, bones, and tendons. Known to improve skin elasticity, reduce wrinkles, and support hair and nail growth.

Type II: Found in cartilage. Promotes joint health, cartilage repair, and reduces inflammation in conditions like arthritis.

Type III: Found in skin, muscles, and blood vessels. Supports skin elasticity and gut health.

Type IV (found in layers of the skin) and Type V (found in the cornea, hair,

and placental tissue): Both are necessary but not required for general structural functions. These serve niche roles that are vital in specific tissues and situations but are less impactful for overall systemic needs like skin, muscle and bone maintenance.

SOURCES OF COLLAGEN INCLUDE:

Bovine (cow): Rich in Type I and III; beneficial for skin and joints.

Marine (fish): High in Type I; best for skin and anti-aging. Do not use if allergic to fish or shellfish.

Chicken: High in Type II; ideal for joint health.

ITEMS TO BE AWARE OF IN CONSIDERING COLLAGEN PRODUCTS:

Hydrolyzed Collagen (Collagen Peptides): Look for hydrolyzed collagen, as it’s broken down into smaller peptides for easier digestion and absorption. Additives: Avoid products with added sugars, artificial flavors, or unnecessary fillers.

Certifications: Check for third-party testing, non-GMO, gluten-free, and allergen certifications.

Additional Ingredients: Products with added Vitamin C will enhance collagen synthesis. Hyaluronic acid and biotin can complement collagen for skin and joint health.

Bioavailability: Marine collagen typically has higher bioavailability than bovine collagen.

Amino Acids: The main amino acids are glycine, proline and hydroxyproline (a special amino acid made from proline and lysine).

Coach Maggie’s Recommendations:

Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides

Powder: This is unflavored, and NSF Certified for Sport. It mixes well with both hot and cold liquids and is free from gluten and dairy. Provides 20 grams of collagen, along with hyaluronic acid and vitamin C.

Garden of Life Grass-Fed

Hydrolyzed Collagen Protein: Made from grass-fed, pastureraised cows. It supports skin, hair and joint health. It also includes 1.5 billion CFU probiotics per serving and is free from artificial additives and sweeteners.

Klean Athlete: Great for athletes, this contains 15 grams of collagen and 50 milligrams of vitamin C per serving, which helps with collagen synthesis. This product is glutenfree, non-GMO, and NSF Certified for Sport.

ADEDOKUN AND FAASSE

Crowned Soccer’s Brightest Stars

Powered by Mungenast St. Louis Acura and Mungenast & Burkard Alton Toyota

On Friday, Jan. 3, soccer fans filled the Missouri Room to witness the announcement of this year’s MAC Hermann Trophy winners. Out of the six finalists, the crystal ball was awarded to Ohio State senior Michael Adedokun and North Carolina junior Kate Faasse. Both players racked up multiple individual achievements in their respective seasons. Adedokun led the Big Ten with 33 points, 11 goals and 11 assists, helping Ohio State reach the College Cup semifinals. Faasse saw major improvements from her previous season, scoring 20 goals and four assists in her first year as a starter for UNC.

The other finalists on the women’s side were Duke graduate Maggie Graham and Wake Forest junior Caiya Hanks. The other men’s finalists were University of Denver senior Sam Bassett and University of Akron senior Emil Jaaskelainen. Jaaskelainen was St. Louis CITY

SC’s first round draft pick for the MLS SuperDraft on Dec. 20.

To kick off the day, finalists and their families took a tour of the St. Louis CITY SC Energizer Park. The soccer stars explored the pitch, locker room, concourse and training facilities. Afterwards at the Downtown Clubhouse, finalists spoke with USMNT star and former Hermann Trophy winner Alexi Lalas on his podcast State of the Union, recorded live in the MAC Connections Podcast Studio.

The awards ceremony was a star-studded event. Bill McDermott, “Mr. Soccer,” was the emcee of the banquet, leading the discussion with the finalists and their coaches. Alexi Lalas took to the stage to speak with Hermann winners Adedokun and Faasse on their respective achievements.
