LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT fter a long winter, spring is finally here! The air is getting warmer. The grass is turning green. Easter decorations are popping up around the city. And the Cardinals are officially back! With all that being said, my favorite part of spring is all of the exciting events that happen around the Club at this time! This year, we have quite the lineup of events for you to enjoy at the Club starting with a new installment of the MAC Speaker Series on Wednesday, April 6, which will feature top CEO Bob Chapman of Barry-Wehmiller. Chapman is known for his innovative approach to running a business and leadership styles. I encourage everyone in leadership or who aspires to be a leader to attend! I look forward to seeing many of you at the event. Also, one of my personal favorite events — the Club’s 2022/23 Board of Governor’s Election – kicks off later this month on April 25. The election is a very important time at the MAC as the membership at large will choose our future leaders. One of my favorite events during the election is the Election Rooftop Happy Hour on April 28! As we head toward Election Day, I hope everyone will take the chance to get to know their candidates and vote. Candidates will be announced very soon on April 5! Don’t forget, you can also be a part of Club leadership by participating in one of the Club’s committees. If you are interest in a committee assignment, please reach out to Gena Willis at gwillis@mac-stl.org to express your interest. As activity picks up at the Club this spring, the MAC is looking for exceptional workers to join our staff to assist in providing our Members with top-notch experiences. With the Jack Buck Grille’s reopening happening soon, hopefully by the end of May, in addition to all of the exciting projects planned for West Clubhouse dining beginning in May as well, the Club is especially looking for experienced servers and hosts to bring quality service to our Members and their guests. If you have a friend or family member that you believe would be a good fit, please encourage them to check out the Club’s employment page at macstl.aaimtrack.com/jobs to apply! As I have mentioned in my last few columns, our Club membership has been growing at an impressive rate! While our new Members begin their journey at the Club, I ask that all sponsors (both proposers and seconders) continue to reach out to the Members they supported! Our Membership team has done an amazing job of helping our newest additions learn the Club, but fellow Members can be especially big assets to helping them get acclimated to the MAC and its various facets. We have many events happening in April so it’s a good time to bring a new Member our to meet other Members.

Member Highlight: This month, I would like to highlight those Members involved in the Women’s Initiative Group. The Women’s Initiative Group started in 2011. The group was formed under the Membership Committee leadership chair and past Governor Bob Hagnauer. At the time, it was led by Past Governor Judith Hanses. The group’s mission is to provide female Members opportunity for fitness, social, professional and philanthropic engagements to support the Club’s vision. The group does a fantastic job of connecting members and creating fun events, including their signature event — the Women of Distinction Luncheon. This event honors seven local women who have been outstanding in business, civic engagement, and philanthropic programs. They have demonstrated excellence, growth, grit and empathy while mentoring the next generation of women leaders. The group has grown exponentially since I have joined the Club in 2015. I’m grateful for the group as I have met many of my MAC friends and found many mentors within the group. It’s also where I began my MAC leadership journey, so it holds a special place in my heart. It’s a great group to consider if you are looking to get more involved in the MAC. Please join me in thanking all the members of Women’s Initiative Group for their selfless service to the MAC. Also, a special thanks to the current Women’s Initiative Group Chair, Jodi Petersen, for her leadership as well as those who came before her including Anna DeSaix, Governor Becky Kingston, Past Governor Judith Hanses, Lisa Fusz and many others. The MAC is a better place, and I am a better person, because of each one of you! Members of the 2021/22 Women’s Initiative Group include Jodi Petersen, Governor Julie Ahrling, Kayla Alexander, Jenn Beatty, Cassie Berger, Helen Blake, Erica Bouchard, Carrie Burrgraf, Sarah Conners, Jenny Dembiec, Anna DeSaix, Governor Justin Fowler, Kimberly Gannon, Jennifer Griesedieck, Governor Judith Hanses, Madeline Hantak, Sami Hantak, Ally Healey, Lauren Hieger, Alyssa Jacobsmeyer, Genevieve, Cynthia Kirkpatrick, Ronda Ladig, Emily McCartney, Governor Cheri McLaughlin, Alicia McMachan, Cameron Moore, Madelyn Moore, Governor Duke Niedringhaus, Margaret Pate White, Jen Pawlitz, Genna Pennington, Sarah Perez, Jen Pruett, Bridget Rupert, Tara Beffa, Patricia Shannon, Kate Suggs, Kathleen Tallis, Maureen Werner and Lisa York. Please have a wonderful April at the MAC. If you see me around the Club, make sure you stop me and introduce yourself. I’m excited for the future of the Missouri Athletic Club and proud to tell everyone I am a Member of this exceptional Club.

Angie Minges, President Missouri Athletic Club

MAC FOUNDATIONS CORNER | Leaving a Legacy

ARE YOU AT LEAST 70 1/2 YEARS OF AGE? If so, you are eligible to do a Qualified Charitable Distribution from your IRA or 401(k) plan and save taxes! Making a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) is a very easy and convenient way to distribute charitable contributions to your favorite charities (501c3 entities) and save taxes at the same time. One of our Members recently decided to make a $25,000 QCD from one of his tax-deferred accounts (IRA or 401k) to the MAC Sports Foundation (which was very much appreciated!). If the Member had withdrawn the $25,000 from his tax-deferred account, he would have had to pay taxes on the $25,000. By making the distribution directly from his tax-deferred account, no taxes were due and the MAC Sports Foundation received the entire $25,000 (rather than the after-tax amount). If you would like to make a Qualified Charitable Distribution, contact the company where your IRA or 401k plan resides, and provide the dollar amount you want to contribute and the following information: MAC Sports Foundation, 405 Washington Avenue, St. Louis, Missouri 63102; tax identification number: 43-1587269.

LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER n the one hundred plus years since the MAC opened its doors, we have witnessed a variety of different events, both internally and globally, that have brought both challenges and innovations to the Club. Thankfully, after facing the challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have come out on top with more Members in our ranks than we’ve had in a very long time! That being said, the Club now faces the new challenge of inflation. In the past year, we have seen an increase in the cost of living such as the price of food, insurance and many other operational expenses including a 72% increase in the cost of gas to run the laundry, steam rooms and heat our buildings. We are fortunate that the Club is experiencing so much new activity and will do all we can to keep the costs down for our Members. As time approaches for the Board of Governors Election in May, I am reminded of the saying “elections have consequences.” I have found that each individual who leads our Club comes with a unique set of passions and strengths that have driven the MAC into the future. With lawyers, it seems that we focus on reviewing our bylaws and policies. Likewise, with accountants, we shift our focus to our financials. This year, with the leadership of President Minges among other Governors like Mark McClanahan, we have been developing a clearer brand strategy for our Members, staff and community. Beginning in the fall of 2021, the Board along with the Branding Task Force worked diligently to discover, or rediscover, the true vision of the MAC as well as articulate who the Club is, what we stand for and how this drives our culture. As an organization with many different offerings and assets, we dove into what the core values and assets of the MAC truly are. With the help of Member surveys, we were able to develop a clear and concise vision and mission statement that we are excited to share. This brand refresh discovery of the MAC will help us articulate a shared identity and inherent purpose that drives both our everyday and future work. This refresh will begin with our employees and permeate through all facets of the Club including service, events, facilities, programming, staffing and more. We are so thankful to our leadership for all the hard work they’ve done over the past year and look forward

to seeing the MAC take on a purposeful journey with measurable results of this very soon. Vision: To be the foremost private club in St. Louis known for attracting exceptional people and enriching lives for generations. Mission: To create extraordinary experiences in all aspects of club life in the spirit of excellence, service, and tradition. A key aspect of our new mission is making the MAC an entity that enriches the lives of each and every Member. We believe that our Club is a place to help Members be their best selves through offering extraordinary experiences that enhance all aspects of their lives. One such aspect of this is service. The Club has always been involved in the local community, and over the years, we have sought more opportunities to give back. Last year, our Member Alex Brockman, introduced us to the Urban Golf program, a program that helps youth in urban St. Louis be successful beyond high school by exposing them to the sport and community of golf. This is a great partnership for the MAC since it aligns with our civic engagement mission to support groups that positively shape the growth and success of the city of St. Louis. The program’s director Jerome Harris will be at the April 5 Masters at the MAC: Golf Club Kickoff to share more about Urban Golf and how Members can help get involved with the program! You can learn more about our work with Urban Golf as well as other upcoming golf activities on pages 16 and 17. This is just one example of aligning with exceptional people and enriching lives for generations. A special thanks to the 150+ Members and staff who participated in our focus groups and “did the work” to uncover who the MAC really is. Words mean a lot, and I believe we should all strive to bring the words and themes of our vision and mission to everyday life, both at the MAC and within our community. See you at the Club!

Wally Smith, General Manager Missouri Athletic Club

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Chris Leonard CD: When did you join the MAC and how did you find out about it? CL: I joined the MAC in October 2021. I found out about it through friends and colleagues that are current Members. CD: What stood out to you about the MAC that resulted in you joining? CL: I was attracted to the fact that this Club has such a nice variety of Members, young families and great legacies of generations that have been Members for many decades. CD: As a Member, what is the most memorable event you have attended so far at the MAC? CL: The Breakfast with Santa was a great time! My family and I attended the Downtown Clubhouse breakfast this past December. I reconnected with many lifelong friends and acquaintances and met new people and families. We have also enjoyed MACtivities on Friday nights at the West Clubhouse. CD: When you are at either Clubhouse, where do you typically find yourself spending the most time? CL: My wife, Laura, enjoys the fitness classes, yoga, boot camp and many others because of the awesome instructors. I enjoy the fitness center and occasionally the Stan Musial Grille and the 1903 bar. The grille and bar are great places to meet up with friends or go for a date night. CD: What is something unique you add to our wonderful group of Members? CL: I enjoy many sports and I always look forward to playing in the men’s basketball league. I enjoy coaching kids, but also work with seniors in my professional career. CD: What is the first word that comes to mind when you hear the name Missouri Athletic Club? Why? CL: Classy. The Club has a great balance of social activities and amenities while offering exceptional programs and superb facilities for sports and exercises for all ages. The Club hires professional and experienced coaches, instructors and staff, which results in the Clubhouses running smoothly.

CD: Tell us a little bit about you and your role with GATECO Development and Gatesworth? CL: I am a civil engineer from Rolla (Missouri S&T) and graduated with my master’s degree from Washington University here in St. Louis while working in commercial construction management. My role at GATECO started in 2016 and has entailed directing our internal development and construction company that builds upscale independent living senior living communities, as well as assisted living, memory care and skilled nursing communities at the Gatesworth, McKnight Place and Parc Provence locations. Currently, my focus includes overseeing our development and construction, maintenance department and to work with our leasing and marketing teams to continue to successfully maintain and improve the dynamic world that we live in. CD: How has the MAC impacted your professional career? CL: I enjoy hearing people’s stories, getting to know folks and making connections. The MAC is a nice and casual environment to network and socialize, which leads to mutual opportunities to do business. At the Club, I am given the connections to help people find the right fit for their needs in whatever life stage they or a family member are in at the current time. CD: What do you enjoy most about your position? CL: [I enjoy] the people, the many hats I get to wear and being challenged to manage and nurture a wide range of operational flow. I am proud to contribute to the wonderful and family-oriented culture that is unlike any other business in the St. Louis area or country. CD: Outside of work and the Club, what does life look like for you? CL: My wife Laura and I have four kids, ages 10, nine, seven and four. We love outdoor adventures, spending time with family, supporting charities and being with friends in the community. F

There he provided diverse style commercial illustrations for a large range of clientele. This too is where he met his lovely wife and Creative Director, Dina. In 2003, Right was given the assignment of creating the cover design and illustration for the St. Louis Cardinals Official Scorecard. Being a fifth-generation St. Louisan as well as a life-long Cardinals fan and scorekeeper, the project was certainly in his wheelhouse. Referencing vintage covers from the past, Mike developed his rendition of the Cardinals bird that honors past traditions yet speaks to today’s fans. Currently, Right works from his home studio in St. Louis with his wife Dina and their own four avid Cardinal fans. This is where he can be seen working day and night creating commercial illustrations for both local and global clients. APRIL 2022 F 11

CHAMPIONS MADE

IN THE MAC RING

The much-anticipated 17th annual Boxing Championship, sponsored by Midwest Regional Bank, took place in the Missouri Room on Thursday, Feb. 24. When tickets went on sale, Members were ecstatic and the event sold out in the minutes of the general admission opening up. The evening began with cocktails and cigars in the Downtown Clubhouse lobby and Art Lounge. This was followed by dinner in the Missouri Room around the ring. Finally,

at 8 p.m., the Apollos sang the National Anthem, the lights dimmed, and the main event began! Governor Justin Fowler was the emcee for this event, which consisted of matchups between accomplished and promising boxers from both local and out-of-state gyms. Attendees were treated to 10 riveting bouts of sweeping uppercuts and corkscrew punches while the spirit of the Members in the room encouraged boxers to not give up the match. F

M A C F E AT U R E MAC Partners with Urban Golf Urban Golf of Greater St. Louis is preparing youth in Urban St. Louis to be successful beyond high school and exposing them to the vast community of golf. Founder Jerome Harris has secured partnerships and support from Gateway PGA Reach, Nike and the St. Louis Public School District. He opened the first UGOLF classroom in Clyde Miller Academy on North Grand in the Fall of 2021. This 2021-22 school year, UGOLF, has 40 high school students participating in afterschool programming, meeting twice a week. Harris works with these students to build connection, trust and mentorship while introducing golf instruction, sportsmanship and exposing these teens to new possibilities. He is also collaborating with teachers to tie golf benefits into classroom curricula and introduce various career paths connected to the game of golf. With the support of his partner organizations,

Harris plans to expand UGOLF across all SLPS schools. UGOLF’s impact directly aligns with the Club’s civic engagement mission to prioritize community partnerships that positively shape the growth and success of the city of St. Louis, especially programs targeting the city’s youth. Special shout-out to the MAC Golf Club for leading the way in our Club-wide support for UGOLF programming by raising $5,000 to sponsor all 40 UGOLF students with official UGOLF uniforms. The Club has invited Jerome Harris to speak at Masters at the MAC on April 5. There, Harris will share information about UGOLF. Those who are unable to attend are encouraged to listen to a special golf episode on the Missouri Athletic Club Connections podcast to learn more about Harris, UGOLF and Member Alex Brockman’s involvement with the program. Missouri Athletic Club Connections can be found on all major podcasting platforms and MAC social media platforms including YouTube. To learn more about connecting with UGOLF Students, please contact Kara Kelpe, Membership Development Executive, at kkelpe@macstl.org or 314539-4408. F

Drop, Drive and Doublehit to the Championship! Congratulations to the MAC squash singles and doubles champions! By Squash Pro Alex Ingham. Singles Club Champions

Doubles Club Champions

A: Henry Byrne beat Stephen Douglass 11 to 6, 11 to 7 and 12 to 10. Both Henry Byrne and Stephen Douglass played in their first Club Championship final! Both players began to settle in with long-drawnout rallies and a fast pace. Douglass started well at 4 to 2, picking off a short length from Byrne. In the third game, Byrne was up 7 to 5 and Douglass needed to break the momentum. With the score at 10 to 10, a tiebreaker, Byrne kept his cool and surged to the finish line to close out with tidy tight squash ending with 12 to 10 in three games.

A: Pat Dolan and Craig Parker beat Chris Connell and Mark Kornfeld 15 to 14, 15 to 9 and 15 to 12. A different lineup to the previous year’s finals, in the semis Cone and Kornfeld took out last year’s finalists Gaertner and Suggs in a tight 3 to 2. A tough ask for the new contenders on paper, they would have to execute a very shrewd, tactical game, starving the weapons of Parker and Dolan’s offense. Parker and Dolan punished loose balls, which went unanswered. The work from previous games took its toll and Parker rolled out a proper backhand reverse. The game ended 3 to 0, Parker and Dolan.

B: Derek Rallo beat Marty Fitz 8 to 11, 11 to 4, 12 to 10 and 11 to 9. In the first game, Rallo was up 6 to 3 only to serve out, then= the momentum switched. Fitz forced it in short from the first shot of the rally and rattled the tin, gifting the second to Rallo at 11 to 4. In the fourth game, Fitz snuck ahead 9 to 8 and threw in a random attempted reverse angle which sailed into the tin 9 to 9. Rallo pushed up in front, cutting off a couple of consecutive volley combinations and caught Fitz out. Rallo took it to 11 to 9 in four games! C: James Merenda beat Dan Tlapek 11 to 2, 11 to 6 and 11 to 2. Merenda was on a mission to claim his first singles club championship. Tlapek’s length was too short, leaving himself open. Merenda took full advantage of the loose balls, pinging the corners and using his speed to counter punch. Entertaining rallies, both players were able to retrieve corner to corner, but Merenda continued his fine tournament run and shut the show down 3 to 0. D: Kurt Wunderlich beat Hunter Brown 11 to 9, 11 to 3 and 13 to 11. *Alex Ingham refereeing on the other court.

B: Jeff Bucheck and Marco Bertarelli beat Dan Healey and Tim Engelmeyer 6 to 15, 15 to 14, 15 to 5 and 15 to 14. Engelmeyer to Healey are fast out the blocks, both on their forehand sides, a tough combo of raw southpaw power and speed pulled away 1 to 0. In game two, Bucheck and Bertarelli, started to tame the pace, placing the ball high and wide standing forward, 14 to 14. In game four, Healey flipped the switch and started off well with great lobs and soft-touch short volley drops, exposing Buchek’s movement forward resulting in 10 to 6. Bertarelli and Bucheck cashed in on a concentrated slight drop, winning eight points in a row. With nowhere to go, a deep long edgy rally forced a miss-hit from the Healey racquet. Match was Buchek and Bertarelli 3 to 1! C: Reed and Andrew Montgomery beat Trevor McDonagh and Dan Tlapek 15 to 12, 13 to 15, 15 to 11 and 15 to 6. D: Taylor and Drennan Bailey beat Cameron Stubbs and Lan Sansone 3 to 1.

GOLF PERFORMANCE PROGRAM AT Golf becomes more popular every year, and golfers are more aware than ever that it is important to develop and maintain their golf fitness. The Golf Performance Program at SSM Health Physical Therapy can help you recover from a golf injury, assist you in return-to-sport and design a personalized golf fitness program.

F Balance F Mobility/flexibility F Stabilization/strength

The Injuries: Golfers’ injuries are often caused by a lack of conditioning, flexibility or strength. Our Golf Performance Program helps you improve in these areas, leading to better joint support, improved dynamic balance, decreased pain and improved ability for proper swing mechanics.

F Analysis: We perform a physical screen to assess your strength, mobility, balance and mechanics and identify what may be impacting your swing mechanics or causing you pain. F Education: We teach proper mechanics to improve overall conditioning, strength, flexibility and efficiency of movement. F Exercise: We create a customized exercise routine to address weaknesses and impairments. Some of our locations offer Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) Certified therapists and can offer K-Vest™ 3D systems for serious golfers who want to take their game to the next level by pro-actively identifying and correcting deficits. For more information, contact: SSM Health Physical Therapy West Clubhouse at 314-822-3205 or stop by the clinic for assistance scheduling. SSM looks forward to serving the needs of MAC Members JAY ZABER and their families! F

F Neck – Proper rotation techniques keep the head in a neutral position as the body coils into the backswing. F Shoulders – Upper body flexibility improves backswing. F Wrists – Flexible wrists allow for a hinge action to occur, meaning more power at impact and reduced strain on elbow and shoulder. F Lower Back – Increasing core stabilization strength and upper back mobility may decrease strain on the lower back. F Hips – Strong, flexible hips may decrease stress on the low back, prevent back pain/injury and increase power. F Gluteal and quad muscles – Strengthening these muscles may improve posture and create consistency in the swing path. Physical Therapy Can Help SSM Health Physical Therapy focuses on conditioning, strengthening, flexibility and the biomechanics of the golf swing:

While all our physical therapists can help rehabilitate injuries, our Golf Performance Program locations offer our three-part program for golfers which includes:

“I broke my femur playing hockey in April of 2021. At the time I was training with Chris Lueken at the West Clubhouse. Once my surgery was completed, Chris mentioned using physical therapy through SSM at the Club. It made total sense. I met with an SSM therapist multiple times a week in addition to keeping Chris up to date on my progress. When I finished PT with Jay Zaber, he was able to immediately meet with Paul (West Fitness Manager) and Chris to discuss a game plan going forward. They were on top of my progress and put me on a path for success through therapy and in the weight room. In less than a year, I was back out on the ice!” — Rick Bagy CHRIS LUEKEN, RICK BAGY AND JAY ZABER POSE TO COMMEMORATE A SUCCESSFUL RECOVERY.

SOUTHERNER, SCHOLAR AND SOLDIER to Discuss

ROBERT E. LEE AND ME On Tuesday, April 26 the Military History Club welcomes retired brigadier general, Ty Seidule as he Zooms in to speak about his book, Robert E. Lee and Me. Seidule grew up revering Robert E. Lee. From his southern childhood to his service in the U.S. Army, every part of his life reinforced the Lost Cause myth: that Lee was the greatest man who ever lived, and that the Confederates were underdogs who lost the Civil War with honor. Now, as a retired brigadier general and Professor Emeritus of History at West Point, his view has radically changed. As a soldier, scholar and southerner, Seidule believes that American history demands a reckoning. Join the MHC to listen to officer and scholar, Seidule, share his own reflections on this timely topic. F

WHEN YOU HAVE A STRONG STRATEGY, RESULTS TEND TO FOLLOW. A couple ways to know you need a stronger strategy: • Data is out of date • Difficult to find the data you need • If you can get to the data, it only helps you see what went wrong, not help plan for future decisions

Here’s what happens when you have the right strategy in place:

HAPPY

• Simplify how employees fine, use and share data • Reporting isn’t a burden on the IT department • Entire organization knows how to use data to make better decisions in real time.
