As we transition into November and the season for giving thanks, I want to take a moment to express my gratitude for your continued support and engagement. Your input on key strategic topics has been invaluable.
A special thanks to our co-chairs, Governor Carrie Burggraf and Lauren Hieger, along with the entire planning committee, for a truly impactful Women of Distinction event this year. We celebrated record attendance, and many attendees are already looking forward to next year!
I also want to extend my appreciation to Chip and the entire team for earning the Platinum Club distinction again as a toprated Athletic Club. We maintained our No. 7 position with a notably improved score from two years ago, thanks to votes from our industry peers. Game on for Top 5 of this wellregarded award!
During our recent focus group sessions, we gathered thoughtful insights about a potential expansion in Clayton. Your feedback confirmed that we are on the right path, ensuring any expansion aligns with our vision and mission. As we await the sale of the Pierre Laclede Center, we’ll continue planning to position the MAC as a distinguished private club, fostering excellence, community impact, and resilience while blending tradition with innovation.
In October, the Board of Governors spent a few self-funded days in Palm Beach, Florida, where they toured several clubs associated with Peacock + Lewis, the firm overseeing our Master Planning efforts. Most notable observations and takeaways included the impact of retail offerings, wellness services, and inclusive amenities. A review of best practices from high-performing clubs, as well as a deeper dive into the drivers of the Detroit Athletic Club's success, were also key points of discussion. The trip provided key learnings that will inform our strategic planning moving forward.
We held our first Board Meeting in the newly renovated 6th Floor space in October. Thank you to all who have contributed to it. It was wonderful to return “home,” and I encourage all members to reserve this beautiful space for special dinners and events. Additionally, the gym floor at our West Clubhouse is now complete — be sure to check it out during your next visit!
Looking ahead, our annual Veterans Day Commemoration luncheon is on Nov. 7. If you haven’t yet listened to the podcast featuring Past Governor Brigadier General (Ret.) Tracy Beckette and our 2024 Veteran of the Year Rodney “Rocky” Sickmann, I highly recommend it. Rocky’s experience as an Iranian hostage and his deep appreciation for our country is truly inspiring.
With the time for Board nominations approaching, we will hold sessions at both Clubhouses to discuss Club governance. If you have questions or are interested in running, please reach out to me, Past President Brent Beumer, or Past President Neal Perryman. You can also review our current core committees and rosters, and contact the respective chair(s) for more information.
As we enter this season of giving, I encourage you to consider ways to contribute to our community, including the Employee Holiday Fund. Thank you for being an essential part of our community. Let’s make this November memorable together!
With gratitude,
Jodi Petersen, President Missouri Athletic Club

The Missouri Athletic Club is thrilled to announce that it has earned the Platinum Clubs® of America status after the 2025-2026 election. The results were announced on Oct. 14 with the MAC taking the #7 spot on the list of top 20 Athletic Clubs.
The election to establish the top 5% of Private Clubs of Excellence takes place in the Fall of even years and is conducted over a 90-day period. Clubs are selected based on seven selection criteria: Universal Recognition, Excellence in Amenities and Facilities, Caliber of Staff and Professional Service Levels, Engagement and Commitment of Membership, Governance and Prudent Fiscal Management, Adapting to Changing Times, and Overall Experience.
Launched in 1997 by Club Leaders Forum, Platinum Clubs® of America has established the reputation as the most respected recognition in Private Club Excellence. The recent election saw record participation, with more than 80% of eligible General Managers, COOs, CEOs, Club Presidents, Commodores, and Owners casting their votes. The Preliminary Ballot is circulated to Private Club Managers across the country who have the opportunity to nominate additional Clubs to appear on the final Ballot. Once complete, the final Ballot is distributed to Private Club Managers, Presidents and Owners. To maintain transparency and accuracy, the election is conducted by a third party and the results are certified as true and correct

TThe holidays are upon us, and I encourage all members to start planning now to make the most of your MAC experience with the family. We have so many long-standing traditions – from Thanksgiving dinner at each Clubhouse (including take out!), our extraordinary decorations at the Downtown Clubhouse, Breakfast with Santa, and, of course, the myriad of children’s camps and social opportunities to celebrate with family and friends! We look forward to providing families with a memorable holiday at the MAC! Note – most events require reservations. So, please start planning now.
I am proud to introduce Jenni Baechle, who serves our MAC team as our Director of Training – focused on enhancing your MAC experience throughout both Clubhouses, but also in driving our goal to being the “Employer of Choice” in the Saint Louis Metropolitan region! Jenni has been with us for nearly a year now and brings the expertise needed to drive our service-centric agenda. We have made meaningful progress in our process and programs centered on our team of employees and the year ahead is certain to be even more impactful!
You will notice ongoing progress in terms of improving our facilities at both clubhouses in the year ahead. Noteworthy projects will include at West; our recently refinished basketball court, expanding our indoor café area to enhance the seating area for members to enjoy time with friends, a quick healthy bite on-the-go, catch up on some work, or simply enjoy a great coffee drink. We are also looking to enhance our childcare space and build upon our pool offering from last summer — focused on new furniture throughout and taking the bar set up to another fun level! Downtown, our priorities will be on many improvements to our ballroom and the adjacent lobby — to include new carpeting, window
treatments, fresh paint and window repairs. It’s going to look outstanding! We will continue to replace fitness equipment at both clubhouses and address a myriad of important infrastructure repairs. We will keep all members updated on the enhancements along the way.
It is important to note that each of these enhancements are part of a long-range Capital plan, which is driven by our Planning Committee and supported by The Finance Committee and management. The plan is reviewed and updated each year.
As a reminder, our incredible new 6th floor is readily available to host your next Board meeting or any intimate meeting that requires privacy, comfort, great food and excellent technology. Contact our Catering team at 314-539-4470 to reserve space and plan for a successful meeting.
I am especially proud of the MAC’s ongoing commitment to honoring our Veterans, which is carefully coordinated and driven by members General Tracy Beckette and Colonel Judith Hanses. The annual celebration is a reminder of how special and impactful the contributions of the honorees truly are, and it serves as a reminder of how important it is that we continue this treasured tradition. A very special note of thanks to General Beckette and Colonel Hanses for their extraordinary efforts!
As always, please do not hesitate to let any member of the management team how we can enhance your MAC experience!

Born in 1874 in St. Louis, Berninghaus began working at age 16 in a printing house, where he learned the technical skills required to make lithographs and engravings. At the same time, he attended night classes at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts, trying to improve his own artistic skills to a level where he could produce rather than process the commercial work handled in the printing shop. The School of Fine Arts led to the more prestigious Washington University in St. Louis and, in 1899, Berninghaus received his first major commission, a series of pieces for the

As the holiday season approaches, it is time to reflect on a year filled with events and milestones. The Missouri Athletic Club has made significant capital improvements throughout the year, achievements that would not have been possible without the dedication and enthusiasm of Club employees. Their efforts are evident everywhere - in the locker rooms, the bustling kitchens, the basement laundry room and engineering offices. Whether visible daily or working hard behind the scenes, the unwavering commitment of MAC employees has ensured the seamless operation of both Clubhouses for many years.
The Employee Holiday Fund provides an annual holiday bonus to MAC employees and
supports the Club's charitable initiatives. MAC employees are grateful to the membership for this tremendous show of appreciation. This year, a portion of the funds will also support the Charitable Society for Children (CSC), reinforcing the Club's values of tradition, community, and culture.
Your Oct. 31 member statement, whether paper or digital, will include a voluntary contribution of $125, labeled as "Empl Holiday/ Foundations Cont." Unless you inform the Accounting Department otherwise, the funds will be allocated as follows:
F $120 to the Employee Holiday Fund
F $5 to the MAC Charitable Society for Children (a tax-deductible contribution)
No further action is required if you wish to maintain the current allocation. However, if you would like to adjust or opt out of the contribution, you may contact the Accounting Department or access the form through the MAC website or MAC app.

The MAC Book Club closes its 2024 season as Jane Molden leads a discussion through Tom Lake: A Novel by Ann Patchett.
In the spring of 2020, Lara’s three daughters return to the family's orchard in Northern Michigan. While picking cherries, they beg their mother to tell them the story of Peter Duke, a famous actor with whom she shared both a stage and a romance years before at a theater company called Tom Lake. As Lara recalls the past, her daughters examine their own lives and relationship with their mother and are forced to reconsider the world and everything they thought they knew.
Tom Lake is a meditation on youthful love, married love, and the lives parents have led before their children were born. Both hopeful and elegiac, it explores what it means to be happy even when the world is falling apart. As in all her novels, Ann Patchett combines compelling narrative artistry with piercing insights into family dynamics. The result is a rich and luminous story, told with profound intelligence and emotional subtlety, that demonstrates once again why she is one of the most revered and acclaimed literary talents working today.

Resistant starch is a carbohydrate that resists digestion in the small intestine and reaches the colon largely intact. Unlike regular starches which break down into glucose, resistant starch acts more like fiber, offering the following health benefits:
Resistant starch helps slow the digestion and absorption of carbohydrates, preventing sharp spikes in blood sugar. This is particularly beneficial for people with insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, or prediabetes, as it improves insulin sensitivity and controls blood sugar levels.
In the colon, resistant starch acts as a prebiotic, feeding beneficial gut bacteria. When these bacteria ferment the starch, they produce short-chain fatty acids, butyrate, which supports colon health and reduces inflammation.
Since resistant starch isn't fully digested, it provides fewer calories than regular starches. It also promotes feelings of fullness, which may help with appetite control and weight management.
By enhancing the growth of healthy gut bacteria and promoting the production of short-chain fatty acids, resistant starch can improve overall digestion, reduce symptoms of constipation, and contribute to a healthier bowel movement frequency.
Studies suggest that consuming resistant starch helps reduce fat storage by increasing fat oxidation (burning of fat for energy). It also helps with better energy metabolism.
Certain foods naturally contain resistant starch, but there are ways to modify foods to increase their resistant starch content.
(Rice, Potatoes, Pasta, and Legumes)
Cooking and cooling these foods increases resistant starch levels. The process of cooling changes the structure of the starches, turning them into resistant starch. After cooking, let cool for several hours or overnight in the refrigerator before consuming. Reheating the food will still maintain some of the resistant starch.
Unripe (green) bananas are high in resistant starch. As bananas ripen, their starches convert into sugars, reducing resistant starch. Eat unripe bananas or blend them into smoothies for a resistant starch boost.
USE
(Raw Potato Starch) One of the best sources of resistant starch is raw potato starch, which contains about eight grams of resistant starch per tablespoon. Add it to smoothies, yogurt, or mix it into water. Avoid cooking, as heating will destroy the resistant starch.
These legumes naturally contain resistant starch, but cooking and cooling them can further enhance their resistant starch levels. Cook lentils or beans, then let them cool before eating or reheating them for a meal.
When oats are soaked, the starches swell and become gelatinized. This process can increase the amount of resistant starch by preventing the breakdown of the starches in the stomach and small intestine.
F 1/2 cup old-fashioned rolled oats (whole grain, low glycemic index)
F 1/2 cup unsweetened almond milk (or any low-carb milk alternative)
F 1/4 cup Greek yogurt (unsweetened, high in protein)
F 1 Tbsp chia seeds (adds fiber and healthy fats)
F 1/4 tsp Ceylon cinnamon (may help with blood sugar regulation)
F 1/2 tsp vanilla extract (optional)
F 1/4 cup fresh berries (like blueberries, raspberries, or strawberries for natural sweetness and antioxidants)
F 1 Tbsp chopped nuts (like almonds or walnuts for healthy fats and protein)
1. In a jar or container, combine the oats, almond milk, Greek yogurt, chia seeds, and cinnamon. Stir well to mix.
2. Cover and refrigerate overnight or for at least 4-6 hours.
3. In the morning, stir the oats. If the mixture is too thick, add a splash of almond milk.
4. Top with fresh berries and chopped nuts before serving.
