AUGUST 2023 F 3
LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Greetings, Fellow Members!
As of the date of this writing, our new GM/ COO, Donald “Chip” Misch, is finishing up his first week at the Missouri Athletic Club. He is off to a quick and busy start as he takes everything in; a lot is going on at this point, including the budgeting process for the fiscal year beginning Sept. 1. Please be sure to connect with Chip when you are around the Club and welcome him to the MAC. We are confident Chip is just beginning what will be a long and successful run as our leader.
While we are very excited for Chip to begin his career with us, this is also a somewhat melancholy time because we are bidding farewell to Wally Smith at the end of August. Wally has led our Club well for many years and is undoubtedly leaving it in a much better place than he found it. Consider that, in fiscal year 2012, the Club budgeted to lose 180 Members in that year. During Wally’s tenure:
F Revenues from operations increased each year from 2012 until the pandemic hit in 2020. F Departmental operation results went from a loss of $400,000 to a profit of $500,000 during the same time frame.
F During this same period, net “income” also increased substantially.
Also, during his tenure, and among many other successes, Wally led the Club through the completion of a number of successful capital projects, and our Membership numbers grew considerably. Wally was the right leader at the right time.
During Wally’s MAC hiring process, he wrote in a submission to the Board that was part of his interview process: “One certainty in change is change. The Club is about to undergo its most significant transformation in recent history with a new GM/COO coming on board. As Tom Peters brilliantly observed, chaos is the time to thrive. (my interpretation).” The MAC is not now in a state of “chaos.” But this new period of leadership transition certainly is a time of change. Our Club and its leadership are well-positioned to embrace this change and this opportunity to thrive.
I have very much enjoyed getting to know Wally over the years, especially through Board service. Wally loves what he does, and his passion for it was obvious from his comments in a Cherry Diamond article from February 2012 when he began his employment. He told Membership, “I love it when the Club is growing and buzzing with activity and excitement. All of our opportunities have to be captured and then the buzz builds becoming contagious, feeding on itself. Fun stuff for sure.” There is no question
that the “buzz” at the MAC built up during Wally’s time here. It is also just as important today that we continue to try to capture the right opportunities for the Club.
In that same Cherry Diamond article, Wally said, “Allison and I really look forward to this new chapter in our lives and getting involved with the St. Louis community. This is a thrilling opportunity to be working with the MAC and all the wonderful Members and staff. I can’t wait to get started.” We are very grateful Wally and Allison shared a chapter of their lives with us. I believe Wally will regard his service here as the pinnacle of his long, successful career.
Shifting gears, I am very excited about the Speakers’ Series Event on Aug. 31, featuring Chip Caray and Joe Buck, at the Downtown Clubhouse. Listening to these gentlemen should be extremely entertaining. Thanks also to our Speaker’s Series committee, particularly Steve Albart and Chris Swank, for continuing to produce such high-quality events for our Members.
I was very honored to recently provide some remarks at the MAC 50-Year Member Dinner. Meeting with our longterm Members was inspiring. That night, we recognized ten individuals who have been Members since 1973. We also honored 21 Members of the MAC 150 Club. For those unaware, the MAC 150 Club is a special distinction for Members whose combined age and years of Membership equal at least 150. (Unfortunately, I did realize that night that I likely will not ever qualify for this particular Club Within a Club!) These long-term Members’ commitment and longevity is impressive and speaks volumes of how unique the MAC is.
Finally, some unpopular news. While the MAC is performing very well and experiencing record revenues, it is not immune from inflationary pressures and rising costs that impact all of us. This has significantly strained our cash flow and needs to be addressed. As the Board considers next year’s budget, there is no doubt that a dues increase will be necessary. Per our Bylaws, the maximum dues increase cannot exceed 8% without a Member vote, and assessments for operational deficits are not permitted. While these parameters are challenging for Club leadership, in that many of our operating costs have increased by more than 8%, I can assure you that the Board will continue to do what it can to be good stewards of the Club and its resources.
Enjoy the balance of your summer and see you around the Club!
Respectfully,
Neal Perryman, President Missouri Athletic Club

LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER
My last Cherry Diamond article! First, a huge thank you to the greatest staff in the world. I’ve had the pleasure of working with some awesome folks whom I call friends. We’ve accomplished a lot and I could not be prouder of our team. Cheers to all! It’s really the people and the relationships that make a job a joy, and my fantastic coworkers have made this a fun one.
I’ve also had the pleasure of working on so many fantastic initiatives and projects over the years and could not have accomplished what we did without all the great Presidents and Governors, many of whom I also call friends. I want to thank every one of them for working and volunteering their time and talents to this great Club despite their very busy lives. It takes a team and we’ve won a lot of battles along the way.
I have also met so many great people and forged many great relationships with the folks of St. Louis.
I will miss this city and its people dearly, but Allison and I are ready to head home to beautiful Franklin, Tennessee. We look forward to enjoying and spending time with our Tennessee friends and family and especially our grandkids who all live right down the street.
The mission was always leave it better than we found it, and I’m confident we did just that. I’m happy to pass the torch to the Club’s new GM Chip Misch. I’m sure he will do all in his power to keep the momentum and progress going, pushing the MAC to new levels of awesome.
My great thanks to everyone and don’t hesitate to look us up if you’re headed our way.
Cheers to the MAC!!!

The increasingly popular Book Club continues its summer meetings on Aug. 10, as it discusses Isabelle Allende’s A Long Petal of the Sea under the guidance of John Hoehn.
In the late 1930s, civil war grips Spain. When General Franco and his fascists succeed in overthrowing the government, hundreds of thousands are forced to flee in a treacherous journey over the mountains of the French border. Among them is Roser, a pregnant young widow, who finds her life intertwined with Victor Dalmau, an army doctor and the brother of her deceased love. To survive, the two must unite in a marriage neither of them desires. A masterful work of historical fiction about hope, exile and belonging. A Long Petal of the Sea shows Isabel Allende at the height of her powers.
On Thursday, Sept. 14, the Book Club turns its attention to the Great War as Jim Gallen leads a discussion of The Great Halifax Explosion by John U. Bacon.
After steaming out of New York City on Dec. 1, 1917, laden with a staggering 3,000 tons of TNT and other explosives, the munitions ship Mont-Blanc fought its way up the Atlantic coast through waters prowled by enemy U-boats. As it approached the lively port city of Halifax, Mont-Blanc’s deadly cargo erupted with the force of 2.9 kilotons of TNT. The ship was vaporized in one-fifteenth of a second; a shockwave leveled the surrounding city. Next came a 35-foot tsunami. Most astounding of all, however, were the incredible tales of survival and heroism that soon emerged from the rubble.

Club Turns Focus to Current Affairs
Tuesday, Aug. 25 F 11:30 a.m. F Downtown Clubhouse
On Tuesday, Aug. 25, the Military History Club turns its attention to current affairs as it welcomes a return Zoom visit by Professor Serhii Plokhy, the Mykhailo Hrushevsky Professor of Ukrainian History at Harvard and the director of the University’s Ukrainian Research Institute. He will speak about the subject of his new book, The Russo-Ukrainian War: The Return of History.
Despite repeated warnings from the White House, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 shocked the world. Why did Putin start the war―and why has it unfolded in previously unimaginable ways? Ukrainians have resisted a superior military; the West has united, while Russia has grown increasingly isolated.
Serhii Plokhy, a leading historian of Ukraine and the Cold War,
offers a definitive account of this conflict, its origins, course, and the already apparent and possible future consequences. Though the current war began eight years before the all-out assault―on Feb. 27, 2014, when Russian armed forces seized the building of the Crimean parliament―the roots of this conflict can be traced back even earlier to post-Soviet tensions and imperial collapse in the 19th and 20th centuries. Plokhy reveals that while this new Cold War was not inevitable, it was predictable. He argues Ukraine has remained central to Russia’s idea of itself even as Ukrainians have followed a radically different path. Hear Plokhy’s thoughts on the conflict and the state of Ukraine at the MHC meeting on Aug. 25. To register, visit mac-stl.org/events.

In pursuit of this objective, the foundation identifies and commends individuals who have made remarkable contributions and achieved outstanding feats within the field of athletics.
CHARITABLE SOCIETY FOR CHILDREN
The Charitable Society for Children (CSC) serves as an integral part of The Sports Foundation, functioning as a Club Within the Club. Its primary goal is to extend financial support to local Saint Louis children’s charities while actively dedicating time and resources to the community. Charities are nominated by both MAC Members and employees, and these nominations are subsequently reviewed by the Charitable Society for Children Committee. From the pool of nominations, the committee selects three beneficiaries for the year. Following a vote, Foster Together, Northside Community School, and The Soulard School have been chosen as this year’s sponsored charities by the CSC.

MAC SPORTS FOUNDATION AND YFC TEAMING UP
Over the past year, the MAC Sports Foundation spearheaded an extraordinary initiative in our Downtown Neighborhood. Through the support of community partners, MAC Member donors, and MAC Member businesses, the Foundation successfully raised over $170,000 to renovate the gymnasium at the Youth and Family Center (YFC), install 14 new exterior doors, and upgrade the main entrance security system.
This significant endeavor has brought about a remarkable transformation of the YFC facility, creating a more inviting and
secure space for the community to come together and enjoy an array of expanded programming. The YFC now offers an enriched lineup of regular sports, recreational, and after-school activities, fostering education, skill-building, and holistic support for youth, families, and seniors.

The Cherry Diamond:
A LITERARY TIME CAPSULE THROUGH THE MISSOURI ATHLETIC CLUB’S HISTORY
In the realm of sports and camaraderie, few institutions possess a legacy as rich and storied as the Missouri Athletic Club. For 120 years, the MAC has been a symbol of athletic excellence and community involvement, inspiring and captivating its Members. At the heart of this remarkable organization lies a publication, a monthly magazine that has faithfully chronicled the triumphs, the evolution, and the extraordinary journey of MAC throughout the ages.
Like a time capsule filled with tales of sportsmanship and camaraderie, the magazine’s founding in 1903 curiously predated the Club’s opening and marked the beginning of a literary tradition that would continue for
a mere 50 cents per year, offered a window into the world of athleticism, where sportsmanship and achievement flourished.
As the magazine matured, it shed its original moniker and donned “Ye Clubbe” in 1906, a playful nod to its evolving identity. The pages of Ye Clubbe became a treasure trove of the Members’ accomplishments, chronicling victories and the camaraderie that would come to define the Club even to this day. With each passing year, the publication thrived. In 1916, the magazine adopted a new name — the Cherry Diamond — an homage to the Club’s iconic logo. Throughout the years, the magazine
9 x 12 inches - a visual spectacle that demanded attention. The magazine later resided in a sleek and elegant 8.5 x 11-inch layout, eventually settling into its current 9.5 x 11.5 inches — the perfect balance between tradition and modernity.
Yet, it was not solely in its physicality that the magazine transformed — technological advancements propelled the publication into a new era. The hand-drawn illustrations and monochrome landscape of the early days gave way to vibrant splashes of color as the magazine embraced progress. Scanners and digital cameras became the tools of the trade, capturing the essence of the MAC’s rich world. In
over a century. Rooted in President Marmaduke’s vision to “chronicle events pertaining to the Club,” the humble Missouri Athletic Club Journal emerged, aimed to inform and bring together a community of like-minded enthusiasts. The magazine sprang to life in those early editions, adorned with creative and often thought-provoking illustrations. The subscription price,
underwent a transformation in name and its physical form, mirroring the ebb and flow of time. The early days saw the Journal measuring a modest 7 x 10 inches, a charming memento of a bygone era. Ye Clubbe whispered secrets of the MAC’s intimate gatherings in its compact 4.5 x 6-inch format. Then came the grandeur of the Cherry Diamond, towering at a commanding
1997, the magazine flirted with color, introducing eight mesmerizing color pages, and within three years, that number doubled. Then, at the turn of the millennium in January 2003, as the MAC celebrated its centennial year, the Cherry Diamond embraced its first full-color production — a testament to the Club’s unwavering commitment to progress and innovation.
The magazine’s story extends beyond the boundaries of the Club, though. It has woven itself into the very fabric of St. Louis, chronicling the city’s monumental moments — from the historic 1904 Olympics and World’s Fair to the daring feats of Lindbergh’s flights. It celebrated the opening of architectural marvels and national landmarks like the Planetarium, the
CHERRY DIAMOND MISSOURI ATHLETIC CLUB
Arch, Busch Stadium, and the Edward Jones Dome. It became a window into the triumphs that shaped the city’s history.
As the Cherry Diamond embraces the unfolding chapters of its second century, it remains a vital link, connecting the MAC’s remarkable past to its vibrant present. And today, as we celebrate the 120th anniversary of the
Missouri Athletic Club, we pay tribute to the extraordinary literary journey that has unfolded throughout its magazine’s pages. This publication has witnessed the transformation of a Club and a city. Its pages have become and will continue to serve as a testament to the power of sportsmanship, the beauty of friendship, and the enduring legacy of one extraordinary Club.

THE CREATIVE MINDS Who Shaped the Cherry Diamond
Many brilliant minds and creative spirits have shaped the identity of the Cherry Diamond magazine over the years, contributing to its success.
Ervin A. Pickel, Jr. was at the helm of the Cherry Diamond, and his passion for the MAC was unparalleled. His dedication to chronicling the Club’s past was remarkable, and he transformed the Cherry Diamond into an authentic voice of civic leadership downtown. The Pickel family’s influence runs deep within the magazine’s pages, with two more generations of the family making their mark on the Club. Chris Pickel’s insights and dedication further shaped the publication, ensuring it remained a vital part of the MAC. His nephew, Brian Dougherty, adds to the family’s lineage as the Club’s current AV Tech.
Reflecting on the transformative years of the Cherry Diamond, Mr. Barry Weinberg, a cherished 50+ year Member, and valuable Cherry Diamond employee at one time, spoke highly of the publication’s driving force. He called Erv Pickel “Mr. MAC,” a man fully engrossed in everything the Club represented. Mr. Weinberg’s sentiments echoed throughout the MAC community, where Pickel’s influence touched every member, fostering a sense of camaraderie and belonging. Weinberg praised the magazine’s ability to spotlight the Club’s achievements and the warm embrace of Members from all walks of life.
The artistry of Eddie Eksergian marked the Cherry Diamond’s early days. Eddie Eks, as he was affectionately known, was a cartoonist who captured the spirit of the Club through his pen-and-ink caricatures. His illustrations adorned
the magazine’s covers and brought to life the announcements of upcoming events.
And then came Al Schweitzer, a true artistic master whose creativity influenced the Club’s publicity, menus, programs, and even stage backdrops for Apollo shows.
For 120 years, the Cherry Diamond Magazine has been MAC Members’ ever-present companion, capturing the essence of the Club in each issue. The impact of those who shaped the publication ensures that the Cherry Diamond will continue to captivate and inspire future generations.

Magical WEDDINGS AT MAC
Wedding days are just one of the special memories families make at the MAC. Multiple couples and the MAC’s Catering Department spoke on the Missouri Athletic Club Connections Podcast about planning and enjoying their big day.
Courtney Hake, Director of Catering oversees weddings with the help of Alli Higgins, Catering Events Coordinator, and Stephanie Leadlove, Catering Events Manager.
The Club hosts 40-50 weddings each year in the timeless and beautiful Missouri Room. Choosing to get married at the MAC creates a one-stop shop for the planning process. Food and beverages are provided in-house by our Executive Chef Bart Philipps who will ensure you and your guests are served a fantastic meal along with our pastry chef who will make a gorgeous and delicious cake. Miscellaneous items are also included such as linens, candle
votives and table numbers.
Couples may need to hire outside vendors for florals and centerpieces, DJs and bands, or photobooths.
Women can get ready in the pink room on the mezzanine level. It offers a multitude of mirrors and great lighting. The guys usually use a hotel room to get ready and then enjoy time in the Billiards Room on the 10th floor. To keep the wedding party satiated throughout the day, they can get lunch at the Jack Buck Grille or have food from the Grille brought to them.
The MAC also provides transportation. There are two shuttles; one holds 33 passengers, and the other holds 14. Most groups will use them to get to the church and back for the reception. It can also shuttle guests. Couples pay by the hour for this service. If you’re having your ceremony in the Missouri Room, the shuttle is a great

way to get to photo locations.
Once the ceremony is over, everyone will go downstairs to the Art Lounge to enjoy cocktail hour while the room is magically transformed for the reception.
“It’s pretty incredible to watch all the guests. Their eyes still light up when they see the room for the second time,” Hake said. A member of the catering team is always at the Club to assist on the day so that the couple can keep their stress levels down and just enjoy themselves.
Evan and Amy Sullivan got married on a rainy day in September 2021. They said having a hotel room to go to after their ceremony at St. Francis Xavier College Church was very helpful. They went up to get dried off and then came right back down to enjoy their cocktail hour and reception.
“We didn’t hire a wedding planner, looking back, maybe we should have for the other parts of the day, but once we walked into the MAC doors, it was seamless,” Amy said.
The MAC was a big part of Governor Jeff Wehmer and Mrs. Deane Wehmer’s relationship from the beginning. So much so that Governor Wehmer popped the question at the West Clubhouse. It then only made sense for the happy couple to have their ceremony and reception in the Missouri Room.
“Everything happened here that day. We didn’t have to contact anybody else,” Deane said.
The MAC can really accommodate almost anything. Even the Wehmers’ dog Donny was able to be a part of their special day. He visited the Jack Buck Grille, and then he walked down the aisle with Governor Wehmer’s 5-year-old nephew.
Christian and Lindsey Burns got married in June 2022. Christian’s parents got married at the MAC and he grew up going to both Clubhouses. But with Lindsey not being from the St. Louis area she and her mother had a lot of questions for the catering team.
“Courtney was always quick to respond. Planning a wedding is a lot of work, but Courtney made it feel like not a lot of work,” Lindsey said.
The MAC has been a big part of Steve and Mary Merlos’ lives for decades. Although they did not get married in the Missouri Room, three of their daughters have. The Merlos said each of their experiences as parents of the bride has been so wonderful, they know exactly where they’re going when their next child gets engaged.
“MAC took care of everything. Once we knew it was in the hands of the MAC, we knew that everything would be taken care of and wonderful,” Mary said.
