LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Ah, the dog days of summer! I’m sure many of you are preparing your children (and yourselves) for a new school year. At the MAC, we are preparing for a new fiscal year and August Foundations’ Month. Through the month, we’ll provide opportunities to give back via our philanthropic focused efforts. If you are familiar with Jesuit philosophy (especially if you’re a fellow St. Louis University alum), you probably have heard of the concept of magis. It’s about universal good; taking what’s inherent in us and using it for the greater good. Please think about magis and consider your inherent capacity to give to some of our communities’ greatest needs and make a choice to apply it to where it can have great impact. For more details on how you can contribute, please refer to page 10.

The Olympics are in full action! From the 1904 Games to this 29th Summer event, St. Louis and the MAC share a rich tradition with the Olympics. A number of MAC members have had the honor of an Olympian title bestowed upon them, including current MAC member and St. Louis favorite Jackie Joyner Kersee! Explore this great tradition on page 16.

Regarding club governance, our fiscal year budgeting for Sept. 1 is well underway. Our membership and financial position remain strong year over year, though expenses remain higher as well, especially given our expansive facilities between the Downtown and West Clubhouses along with standard maintenance and other challenges that come with aging. As Chip will elaborate on, a reserve study is in process that will help guide future obligatory capital investments, and a Master Plan for our West Clubhouse is in development to further refine how we can sustainably and purposefully grow there. In the meantime, via the focused efforts of our Planning Committee, over the past year we identified several opportunities to continue to enhance member experiences. As key stakeholders in our Club, I’ll report further on our budget and those refined opportunities in September.

Progress on the renovation of the 6th Floor Private Dining and Meeting Room space Downtown continues with a current completion date around Labor Day. We continue to place emphasis on safety and security at both of our Clubhouses. You may have noticed some of St. Louis City’s finest police officers manning the Lucas Street entrance Downtown. We plan to continue to leverage those officers and explore additional measures to keep members and guests safe when visiting our Downtown Clubhouse. As Chip has reported, access to our West Clubhouse will be made available via our MAC mobile app and will provide a much more enhanced level of security for all.

Our exploration of opportunities in Clayton, particularly the Pierre Laclede building continues. Working with the aligned task force of Past Presidents (Schoedel/Lett/Minges/ Beumer), Finance, Planning and Membership Committee Chairs (Treasurer Maynard/Di Bisceglie/Dankenbring) and Chip, Pam and team, we have identified a detailed action plan to complete remaining due diligence. We continue to keep current and future membership in mind, and as previously communicated, we will NOT commit the MAC without input from members. We are targeting 45-60 days to complete the referenced action plan. The applicable committees will have the opportunity to review. The Board remains committed to ensuring sustainable growth and enhancing the MAC experience for all members. Thank you for your continued support.

A special thanks to Governor Sextro and his wife Patti. They hosted our July Board Meeting with Governor Sextro on the grill. They, along with our amazing MAC staff (Mensur and team), delivered a perfect summer BBQ dinner!

Jodi Petersen, President Missouri Athletic Club

LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

There is much to report on during this peak summer season in St. Louis.

We are in the final weeks of an exciting project coming to completion, adding another enhanced amenity for members to enjoy Downtown. The 6th Floor will offer a host of meeting room options for members and will feature “The Board Room” with a separate dining room and bar and adjacent meeting rooms, the “Jefferson Room and Lincoln Room.” The rooms can accommodate meetings and full meal service for up to 20 people in a private and sophisticated setting with dedicated service staff ready to anticipate your every need. Technology and support services will be readily available as well. We will begin accepting reservations for these spaces in September and will update all members on timing and reservation details in the weeks ahead.

The upgrades to the West Clubhouse Poolside Café have been well received and members continue to leave positive comments regarding the enhanced experience. What’s next? Management is diligently planning for the year ahead and will present our recommendations to the respective Finance and Planning Committees and ultimately present them to the Board for approval. A few key considerations for the year ahead: enhancing the Poolside Café experience at the West Clubhouse, making it a year-round offering; updating the Downtown Missouri Room; and continuing to invest in our fitness offerings at both Clubhouses.

Our capital planning is part of a comprehensive, ten-year Master Plan that management reviews with the Committees and the Board to continually assess the needs of the MAC. Our Master Plan will be redefined in the year ahead, incorporating our Capital Planning objectives with the guidance of club industry experts from the firm of Peacock + Lewis. The principals of Peacock + Lewis will host a series of focus groups with

members and meet with management and committees to update our Master Plan, which will also be supported by a survey of all members focused on Club facilities and services for both Clubhouses. The Master Plan will further be supported by a comprehensive asset review done by an independent firm, which will review and provide accounting of every asset of each Clubhouse, supported by a schedule for effective planning. This ongoing approach will allow us to communicate to all members the priorities and needs of the two Clubhouses as defined by members and supported by effective use of the reserves studies. The coming months and year ahead will allow for a wealth of communication as to what we have learned.

It is my privilege to highlight one of the MAC’s esteemed leaders, Chris Maurer, our Director of Human Resources! Chris has been with the MAC since 1996 and has been a significant part of the MAC’s success over the years. She began as an HR Assistant and, a year later, became the head of the department. Chris has a Psychology Degree and an MBA from St. Louis University and notes her MBA was supported by the MAC’s tuition reimbursement program that was in place at the time. During peak summer operating schedules, the MAC approaches 500 employees, and Chris and her team oversee the hiring, orientation, training, benefits administration and support for all elements of the employee experience. Chris’ passion and professionalism are an integral part of the MAC’s “Employer of Choice” experience, and we are so fortunate to have her leading the way on our path to “better.”

As always, please let us know how we can enhance your MAC experience!

CHRIS MAURER POSES FOR HER 2024 HEADSHOT; SMILING AT HER DESK IN THE ‘90s; WELCOMING ALL TO THE 2024 MAC EMPLOYEE SERVICE AWARDS.

It is important for members and guests to be courteous of those around them. The use of mobile devices for receiving or calling purposes is not permitted in any café, bar, or dining room in either Clubhouse or in any other area designated by the Board of Governors or Governance Committee. Dan McCaw, American (b. 1942) | Memories Oil on canvas | 30 x 30 inches | Signed lower right. Missouri Athletic Club Art Collection, Purchased 1985.

Dan McCaw is a contemporary American painter known for his impasto depictions of figures in interiors and landscapes. His primary interest lies in creating the most “expressive visual experience possible based upon a wide variety of personal observations.” McCaw’s sensitive figure paintings reflect a romantic impressionist influence, but he is also highly inspired by Abstract Expressionists and his more recent works are much less literal representations of the subject. Born in Seattle and raised in Montana, McCaw later attended the San Francisco Academy of Art and worked in commercial illustration for a firm in Los Angeles following graduation. He continues to live and work in L.A.

Have you seen this painting?

Do you remember this painting? This sundappled scene used to greet diners at the Jack Buck Grille entrance and has been safely placed on-rest since those restaurant renovations took place. The UK artist is best known for brilliant beach and fishing scenes featuring delightful children at play.

MAC FOUNDATIONS CORNER

Leaving a Legacy

AUGUST IS FOUNDATIONS’ MONTH

Throughout August, MAC members have the opportunity to contribute to our Foundations by simply adding a donation to their chit when dining at the Club. This hassle-free and accessible method greatly bolsters our Foundations.

SPORTS FOUNDATION

At the MAC, our future rests in your hands, and we wholeheartedly value your backing. All donations are eligible for tax deductions, making your support even more meaningful.

CHARITABLE SOCIETY FOR CHILDREN

The Sports Foundation’s mission is to advance, inspire and honor exceptional accomplishments in the realm of athletics. In pursuit of this objective, the foundation identifies and commends individuals who have made remarkable contributions and achieved outstanding feats within the field of athletics.

The Charitable Society for Children (CSC) serves as an integral part of the Sports Foundation, functioning as a Club Within the Club. Its primary goal is to extend financial support to local St. Louis children’s charities while actively dedicating time and resources to the community. Charities are nominated by both MAC members and employees, and these nominations are subsequently reviewed by the CSC Committee. From the pool of nominations, the committee selects three beneficiaries for the year. Following a vote, Caritas Connections, Miriam School and Learning Center, and Walker Scottish Rite Clinic have been chosen as this year’s sponsored charities by the CSC.

The CSC Committee is a permanent committee of the MAC Sports Foundation, a 501(c)3 organization recognized by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service, which is eligible to receive tax-deductible donations.

MAC BOOK CLUB

Thursday, Sept. 12 F 5:30 p.m. F West Clubhouse

As summer hits the homestretch, Helen McGlynn will guide the MAC Book Club through “The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek” by Kim Michele Richardson.

The bestselling historical fiction novel from Kim Michele Richardson, this novel follows Cussy Mary, a packhorse librarian, and her quest to bring books to the Appalachian community she loves. The hardscrabble folks of Troublesome Creek must scrap for everything, except books. Thanks to Roosevelt’s Kentucky Pack Horse Library Project, Troublesome has its traveling librarian, Cussy Mary Carter. Cussy’s not only a book woman; she’s the last of her kind, her skin a shade of blue unlike most anyone else. Not everyone is keen on Cussy’s family or the Library Project, and a Blue is often blamed for any whiff of trouble. If Cussy wants to bring the joy of books to the hill folks, she must confront prejudice as old as the Appalachians and suspicion as deep as the holler. Inspired by the true, blueskinned people of Kentucky and the brave Pack Horse library service of the 1930s, “The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek” is a story of courage, strength, and the belief that books can carry us anywhere – even back home.

On Sept. 11, the Book Club eases into autumn as Jim Gallen leads the discussion of “All the Beauty in the World: The Metropolitan Museum of Art and Me” by Patrick Bringley.

Millions of people climb the grand marble staircase to visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art each year; however, only a select few have unrestricted access to every nook and cranny. The guards who roam unobtrusively in dark blue suits keep a watchful eye on the two-million-square-foot treasure house. Caught up in his glamorous fledgling career at The New Yorker, Patrick Bringley never thought he’d be one of them. When his older brother was diagnosed with fatal cancer, he found himself needing to escape the mundane clamor of daily life and seek solace in the most beautiful place he knew. To his surprise, and the reader’s delight, this temporary refuge becomes Bringley’s home away from home for a decade. “All the Beauty in the World” is a surprising, inspiring portrait of a great museum, its hidden treasures, and the people who make it tick, by one of its most intimate observers.

Frank Lloyd Wright is widely recognized as the greatest architect of the 20th century. In 1950, he designed a house for a Kirkwood, Missouri couple, an example of Usonian architecture offering beautiful design at a moderate cost. The house is one of only five buildings in Missouri that he designed.

The Forever Young Club will welcome Lydia Nunes as the guest speaker for their August lunch meeting. Nunes has been the Associate Director of the Frank

On Aug. 27, the Military History Club welcomes Jerry McLain for a return inperson presentation. Last fall, McLain shared his memories and photographs from his tour in Vietnam with the 1st Air Cavalry Air Division in 1967-68. In 2017, McLain was asked by the Defense POW/ MIA Accounting Agency to return to Vietnam to gather information about three MIA soldiers from his battalion. Returning

to Vietnam was not something McLain had considered, but a return trip to help bring closure to those families who lost loved ones in battle would be worth it. Join the MHC as McLain presents a program of slides and videos taken during his return trip to Danang and the Que Son Valley in Vietnam. To register, visit the MAC mobile app or call 314-539-4470.

INTERCLUB INTERVIEW:

SMILING AND SMASHING WITH MINI TANDON PANCOAST

One of the most infectious smiles on the Ladies Interclub team comes from Mini Tandon Pancoast. Being relatively new to the sport, she exudes joy every time she sets foot on the court. Mini possesses the unique ability to have the same reaction to hitting a winner or an error. It’s impossible to tell who is winning while watching her play – her constant smiles and laughter bring joy to everyone on the tennis court. Teammates and opponents alike comment on her cheerful personality and what a joy it is to play with or against her. For only having played consistently for a year, Mini has developed a nice level of play and has been a very solid addition to our Ladies “B” squad. She has been requested as a partner many times and has a record above .500. As the Interclub coach, I could not be more proud to have Mini on the team and am excited to see just how high she can climb.

How long have you been an MAC member?

My family rejoined about two years ago, and we love it. In addition to tennis, we love the pool and MACtivities on Friday nights with our six-year-old daughter.

How long have you played tennis?

I started playing casually about two years ago through beginner lessons and became more involved about one year ago. Like most sports, the more you play the better you get, and it has become one of my favorite ways to spend time.

What got you started playing tennis?

I have always enjoyed watching and learning about the sport and love to learn and challenge myself. I love the exercise. It’s never too late to learn a new skill. The most interesting thing is how simple it seems until you learn how it involves way more than hitting a ball back and forth. It involves so much more precision and footwork than I ever realized as a spectator. Playing in different temperatures and weather conditions also provides its own spin.

How long have you played on the Interclub team?

I started playing on the IC team about six months ago, and I enjoy the learning curve and challenge.

What is your favorite thing about Interclub?

I love getting to know the other team members and enjoy the camaraderie. Most of all, I love the challenge of playing against different teams each week and not knowing what to expect.

Do you have a favorite tennis memory, either playing or spectating?

I clearly remember my first match and how kind and patient my partner was to teach me all the basic etiquette involved in the sport. I recall getting my first really nice racquet as well, which was very different than my rather oversized and forgiving beginner’s racquet.

How often do you play during the week at the MAC?

I try to play regular tennis at least twice a week and cardio tennis twice a week, though I work full time as a physician and have a sixyear-old, so I enjoy playing any time that I can make it.

PARC PROVENCE

In the heart of the St. Louis region, nestled amidst serene gardens and charming village aesthetics, there exists a place where compassion and expertise converge to create a haven for those living with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

“For two decades, Parc Provence has stood as a beacon of hope,” says Kathy Kelley, Parc Provence’s Administrator. “As one of the nation’s pioneers in memory care, Parc Provence is not just another senior living community. It is a village of well-being — meticulously designed to nurture the physical and cognitive needs of each resident.”

Locally owned and managed, Parc Provence has a dedicated team of memory care specialists, in partnership with esteemed physicians from Washington University School of Medicine, to ensure residents receive the highest standard of care tailored to their unique needs. As Kelley explains, “Each of our residents

lives in one of five households within the community. Households are defined by similar abilities and care requirements, meaning each resident is part of a community with similar needs. Events and activities that occur within the household are tailored to individuals and include no more than ten people at a time, helping to ensure individualized care.”

“Parc Provence provides a safe, structured, and supportive setting,” Kelley adds. Its specialized care allows residents to live with dignity and families to find solace in knowing their loved ones are receiving the care they deserve.

SPONSORED CONTENT

• Its registered nurses are available 24 hours each day, offering compassionate, patient-centered care.

• Staff members participate in ojn-going training and continuing education focused on the treatment of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

• Parc Provence’s staff-to-resident ratio is the highest in the industry for both daytime and evening shifts.

• Parc Provence provides a full continuum of memory care from assisted living to skilled nursing as well as on-site physical, occupation, and speech therapy.

However, what truly sets Parc Provence apart is the immersive “village” lifestyle it provides for both residents and their families.

“Within the community, residents enjoy a variety of daily activities, encompassing over 60 diverse options,” says Kelley. “Stroll through our gardens, savor a treat at the ice cream parlor, discover a book in the library, explore the beauty of art in the gallery, or seek solace in the chapel – here, life is not just lived; it is celebrated.”

For the families of dementia patients, Parc Provence’s village mentality offers much more than just peace of mind. Caring for loved ones facing the uncertainties of advanced stages of dementia can be an overwhelming journey. “Parc Provence understands that it takes a village to provide the best care possible, and that’s precisely what we offer,” says Kelley.

Parc Provence’s commitment to excellence, its dedication to providing personalized care, and its unwavering belief in the power of community makes it the leader in Alzheimer’s and dementia care. In fact, U.S. News & World Report has placed Parc Provence, on its list of Best Memory Care communities.

Discover the difference Parc Provence can make in your loved one’s life. Caring for someone with dementia takes a village, and Parc Provence is here to be a part of yours. Call 314-542-2500 to learn more.

COACH MAGGIE’S ADVICE

FOR EMOTIONAL EATERS

Before reaching for comfort food, ask yourself if you’re truly hungry. If not, identify the emotions you are experiencing – stress, anger, boredom, fear, sadness, or loneliness. A food diary can help uncover binge-eating patterns and mood-food connections. Emotional eating isn’t necessarily a problem; self-soothing with food while also staying on a plan is possible with simple ground rules. During stressful times, choose snacks with fiber-rich carbs and a bit of fat or protein to avoid blood sugar crashes. Exercise reduces stress by releasing mood-lifting endorphins, which can lessen dependence on comfort food.

SNACK OPTIONS

Ants on a Log:

F/V/f (Fruit, veg, fat) without raisins, veg and fat

3 stalks of celery, 1 Tbsp almond butter, 2 Tbsp raisins. With energizing carbs, filling fiber, fat, and protein, this snack has several benefits.

Energy Bites:

Four small bites = F/f (Fruit and fat)

½ cup chopped dates, ¼ cup rolled oats, ½ cup natural peanut butter, protein powder, and Ceylon cinnamon. Mix and form into 12-14 bites. This is the perfect treat for an on-the-go breakfast, satisfying a sweet craving while keeping blood sugar levels stable.

Herbal Teas:

Two cups per day

Herbal teas are comforting and can help calm a jittery digestive tract. Chamomile helps ease anxiety and irritability, while green tea contains the amino acid L-Theanine, which promotes relaxation without drowsiness.

Open-Faced PB&B:

F/S/f (Fruit, Starch, fat)

1 slice of whole grain toast, 1 Tbsp natural peanut butter, 1 small banana sliced, honey drizzle.

Dark Chocolate-Covered Almonds:

1 oz = C (Condiment) must be 72% or higher in cacao

The intense flavor of dark chocolate can help curb cravings, and just 1 oz per day can help reduce stress hormones.

Veggies and Dip:

1V/1C (Veg/Condiment)

½ of a medium carrot or 3 celery stalks, 2 Tbsp hummus. The combination of veggies and hummus help keep the body satisfied for long periods of time.

Mini Parfait:

F/d/f (Fruit, dairy, fat)

¾ cup plain low-fat Greek yogurt, ½ to ¾ cup blueberries, 10 chopped nuts. Dairy is packed with calcium and protein, helping release feel-good neurotransmitters.

Homemade Flavored Water:

8-10 cups per day

Add cucumber slices to seltzer or add fruit to your water. Dehydration is often mistaken for hunger, so adding healthy elements to water helps encourage hydration.

Trail Mix:

F/f/C (Fruit, fat, Condiment)

10 walnuts, 1 Tbsp dried cranberries or raisins, 1 Tbsp dark chocolate chips. Snacking on walnuts helps the body respond better to stress.

Curry Roasted Chickpeas or Dash Taco Seasoning Chickpeas:

½ cup = p (½ protein)

These recipes are my favorite, making a great substitute for chips with all the satisfying salt and crunch without any guilt.

Curry Roasted Chickpeas:

Heat 1 tsp olive oil in a saucepan over medium-high heat. Add ½ cup rinsed, drained and dried Eden Organic No Salt

Added Chickpeas (BPA-free). Cook for 5-7 minutes, flipping frequently. Toss with ½ tsp curry powder and a generous pinch of cumin, hot paprika, garlic powder, and Morton’s Lite salt.

Dash Taco Seasoning (DTS) Chickpeas:

Heat oven to 400 degrees. Toss ½ cup rinsed, drained and dried Eden Organic No Salt Added Chickpeas in a bowl with 1 tsp olive oil and sprinkle with MDTS. Bake for 20-30 minutes depending on desired crunch. These can also be made in an air-fryer.

Fair Life Milk:

8 oz = 1d (dairy)

One glass of milk holds many benefits –B vitamins, protein, vitamin D, and bonebuilding calcium. Stick to the low-fat or Fair Life milk. Drinking milk around bedtime helps bring a more restful sleep.

Nuts:

10-15 nuts = 1f (fat)

Almonds, pistachios, and walnuts can boost your immune system with vitamins and zinc.

Fruit and Nut Butter:

F/f (Fruit and fat)

Apple slices with 1 Tbsp of nut butter or a small banana with 1 Tbsp of peanut butter provides a mix of natural sugars, fiber, and protein.

DOWNTOWN DINING CREATIONSSweet

After the specials in July and the addition of a new dessert menu, the Downtown Pastry Team is offering a glimpse into the process of creating a new sweet treat. Chef Katie works with her team to curate confectionary delights for various menus, from intricate wine dinners to informal buffet offerings. For fine dining purposes, Chef Katie’s process has been fine-tuned throughout her years at the MAC.

Early in her education, Chef Katie learned the specific dessert components: cake, cream, crunch, and garnish. This approach gives her a very distinct, composed style, playing a significant role in the designs members see daily at the

WEST DINING

Club. Marble glazes, self-saucing dishes, and edible sparkles are features she likes to include in her treats.

The first step in creating a new dessert includes reviewing the specifications of the upcoming Club event. Executive Chef Bart Philipps provides Chef Katie with event details such as the budget, wine pairings, and group preferences. She then considers seasonal ingredients and the overall style of the dish, pulling in her team for ideas.

“I’ve learned so much just by asking questions during this process,” states Assistant Pastry Chef Liz. “We’ve gotten to the point where we’ll volley ideas across the table until one of us stops to write things down.”

The exciting aspects of dessert creation come with garnish. Chef Katie is efficient with the use and purpose of garnishes. The team brainstorms solutions to add interest to dishes - height, color, or an ingredient that is mixed into the dessert itself are among the many elements used to garnish a dessert. The team must keep temperature in mind when planning garnishes, as sugar does not fare well in humidity, and tuiles cannot sit out too long.

SUNDAY BRUNCH AT WEST

“I love a dessert that lets me play around with some of my favorite effects,” states Chef Katie. She’s inspired by chocolate work of any kind, as well as anything that elevates a dish. Her style and passion have offered many of the Club’s most favored desserts, like the S’mores Galore and the lemon raspberry Pretty in Pink Bombe.
