1 + 1 = PLAT INUM PARTNE RS H IP + 6 = S UC C E S S The Membership Department has grown to a strong group of six, including Katie Maurer, Director of Club Sponsored Events and CWCs, whose contribution to retention is invaluable. Julie Kueper and Susan Bischoff capture every lead and work their magic at the West location, and Wendy Descher, Michael Gray and Patti Cundiff work to connect Downtown businesses and residents with the MAC. The Club is experiencing positive membership growth for the first time since 2006, at which time the initiation fee was being waived. During January 2014, in addition to positive net growth for the month, the Club gained $20,000 in initiation fees. Even with all these positive signs of membership growth, the department is not satisfied but alone cannot grow membership. Our existing members are vital to the process by constantly looking for member candidates and forwarding their information to the Membership Department. The main reason people don’t join? Simply because they have never been asked. Members can also be on the lookout for events,

business meetings and party opportunities to be held at either location. In addition to exposing prospective members to the Club, catering revenue contributes to the health of the Club and often brings rooms business, helping to fill the Three Buckets. The Membership Department has become the Membership Development Department with a new mission statement and new goals, serving as the center of Club membership and financial growth. A new thought process is in place with the focus of developing. All non-members are prospective members, the majority coming from existing members. From prospective member they will be developed to candidate, new member, and active long-term member. Our recent MAC Champion Paul Passanise said it best: “The dues are a small investment if you take advantage of all the Club has to offer. Better health from an organized athletic program will extend the quality of your life, and one new customer or business deal will pay your dues for a year.”

It’s election season again! It’s been a rewarding experience to serve on the MAC Board of Governors and in the office of president, and I look forward to meeting the newest class of governors that will be elected this spring. Check out pages 9-12 of this issue to learn more about each of the candidates. If you have not had a chance to meet these individuals, there are a number of opportunities to do so, including the Rooftop Happy Hour on April 23, Meet & Greets at Downtown and West, the Apollos Spring Concert and more. Also, be sure to join us for the Election Day festivities on Thursday, May 1, at the Downtown Clubhouse. If you’ve never experienced an Election Day at the MAC, I think it’s safe to say it’s a tradition unlike any other. It’s also a great opportunity to thank the new class of leaders for committing their time and talents to this organization. This month, we’ll also recognize another group for their achievements and service – the 2014 MAC Women of Distinction. This remarkable group of women hail from all walks of life, from the Missouri Supreme Court and nonprofit community to healthcare and business. This
year, the MAC received a recordbreaking number of nominations, so thank you to everyone who took the time to submit a candidate. You can learn more about our awardees in this issue, and join us on April 11 to help us honor them for their accomplishments in the St. Louis community.
Membership in the MAC gains you access to more than 80 private clubs.
Now’s the time to start making your summer plans. If you have kids, there is no shortage of camp options to keep them active and entertained. Camp MAC is available all summer long, and specialty camps are available in nearly every sport possible, from tennis and golf to basketball and volleyball. It’s also time to register your young swimmers for the Penguins Swim & Dive Team, which is a great way for them to improve their skills in the pool. If you’re new to the Club, you’ll quickly discover that the West

Pool is the perfect place to be on a sweltering St. Louis summer day. Pool season kicks off with a party on May 24 and will stay busy throughout the summer with a variety of social events, happy hours and families looking to beat the heat. If you’ll be traveling this summer, don’t forget that membership in the MAC gains you access to more than 80 private clubs across the nation and around the world. Many of these reciprocal clubs offer on-site accommodations for your convenience and the top-notch service you’ve come to expect at the MAC. A complete list of locations is available on the website or by contacting the Membership Department at 314-539-4438. The Club Within the Club (CWC) in the spotlight this month is the Military History Club, which meets monthly at the Downtown Clubhouse. Past speakers have included authors, historians, professors and veterans from all branches of the military, sharing personal experiences and research. All with a passion or interest in history are welcome to join the Club, which meets the fourth Tuesday at noon in the Veteran’s Room. For information on upcoming meetings, visit the MAC website (Social > CWCs > MHC) or contact John Noce at 314-692-2812. I will see you around the Club! John Bugh President

“If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.” Benjamin Franklin had it right, and planning is integral to our success as a club. When an effective plan is in place, we can see the results. It is so fulfilling to see the ideas and projects anticipated in 2012 come to fruition. These projects include the top-tobottom overhaul of the Downtown hotel hallways and common areas (see page 27 for a look). Work is underway at West, with the squash court refinishing and tennis court resurfacing scheduled for this spring. As promised, the grassy area by the pool will be fenced in time for the start of the season on May 24. Some of the improvements aren’t as easy to see. Through the support of the MAC Preservation Foundation,
new fire doors were installed on Floors 7-10 for safety and the roof drains have been re-sleeved. This isn’t sexy work that you’ll see in pictures but are just as critical to improving and maintaining the facilities. Let’s all say a huge thank you to the Preservation Foundation Board of Directors Don Gunn, Jerry Ortbals and Kim Tucci and support their efforts by marking your calendar for Aug. 25, for the annual Golf Classic. This event is a way to show your support, while also showing off your business with a number of sponsorship opportunities available. All the funds generated benefit our Foundation efforts. The Preservation Foundation, whose mission is the preservation of our Downtown historical clubhouse, isn’t the only Foundation helping
to support and grow the MAC. This month, take a moment to see the restored works of art, made possible by the Art Foundation, on display in Preservation Gallery. (Paul Weil shares more details on page 26.) The Club has one of the largest private art collections in the state, and the Foundation, through the support of the annual holiday giving campaign, is tasked with preserving these works for years to come. Pretty amazing when you consider the average donation amount is just $2, but it is truly powerful when 2,400 members participate. The MAC Sports Foundation also stays busy, helping to fund programs like the Jack Buck Sports Award and Hermann Trophy, which raise the continued on next page

MAC name in the community and support young athletes. This year, the Sports Foundation generated sponsorship support to offset the costs of these “world class” events bringing in both top amateur and professional athletes. The work of these Foundations is so integral to the success of our Club that we’ve taken to calling them the 4th Bucket – along with 1) Membership, 2) Catered Events and 3) Rooms. It is really rewarding to see these concepts take hold and make a huge difference in our focus and financial condition. As we all know, planning isn’t a oneand-done item on the checklist but rather an annual process to ensure the continuity of plans from board to board and year to year. We rely on the 4 A’s of planning: 1) setting
the annual Agenda; 2) Allocating resources; 3) Activating work; and 4) building in Accountability for all parties involved. Each of these steps ensures a continual ongoing planning process which is in place and functioning well. Of course, this work could not be accomplished without the right team in place, both on the board and staff. I would like to commend each of our candidates for this year’s election for stepping forward to serve. Too often, board service is seen as a chore, but when you have the right mix of individuals, it can be an incredibly rewarding and fun experience. Just ask a few of our past governors. The board is in place to govern, but they certainly aren’t working alone. MAC staff are here to take the vision and the agenda that has been
set and purposefully bring it about on a daily basis, and quite frankly, I think they do a great job. (Based on the number of thank-you cards and letters of appreciation that are tacked to our “Wall of Honor,” I know many of you agree.) Thank you to all our staff, and to you our MAC member family for your support as we keep “The MAC on the Move” moving forward. See you at the Club, Wally

years only to collect dust after the excitement of dreaming dies down. Board members work hard to get elected and bring their creative juices to the leadership, and then retire. One challenge the club faces has been identified at least as far back as the 1993 Strategic Plan where a “Major internal force affecting the Club” was stated as: “Challenging governance structure that inhibits continuity and pursuit of a coordinated long-term plan.” Committees have traditionally been charged with the task of keeping the MAC good. Some leaders have managed to stay “in the loop” for multiple years. Mostly, they rotate out after a few seasons. With President Bugh’s leadership, the Board is once more looking down the road, and potentially WAY down the road to how great the MAC could be. The old adage “if we keep doing what we’ve been doing we can only expect what we’ve been getting” does not appear to ensure success in the “pursuit of a coordinated long-term plan.” It seems appropriate we take a long hard look at the governance underpinnings and consider some changes to help produce a outcome. With data supplied by the think tank Club Benchmarking, we know
“Successful Clubs” differ in how their leadership serves at all levels (Elections, Officers, Boards, and Committees), and this has the By-Laws committee looking at ways to align governance, policies and procedures in order to facilitate the MAC making that next step from Good to Great. One outstanding feature that differs from more successful clubs is the length and continuity of service at all levels. And that speaks to the challenge identified in the 1993 Strategic Plan quoted above. Simply stated, in order to be great, we may need to find ways to keep talented, dedicated leaders in their leadership positions longer than we do at the present. Committees chairs change every year. Board members serve three. Officers (including the President) retain their positions for only one year. These challenges fall squarely on the Ethics and By-Laws committee to research and recommend. As chair of that committee, I am eager to hear your thoughts.

The MAC is a good club … a REALLY good club. It has weathered fires. It weathered the Great Depression and other minor market disturbances, including the last recession. It has weathered severe downturns in membership. Our leadership has reacted well in the face of some pretty serious events. We have fought the fires and we’re still standing. We have a good defense! The MAC can be a great club. To be a great club, the MAC would benefit from a good offense. A good offense for a club consists of policies and governance that allow for us to ask ourselves “what could we be?” Then decide what we WANT to be and when we WANT to be it. Then develop the policies and procedures to ensure follow through. Five-year plans, capital projects appear, disappear, and then re-appear. Some get funded. Some don’t. Some short-term projects see completion. Some longer ones don’t. Historically, follow through has been a challenge. Innumerable fiveyear plans have been drafted only to fall invisible after the authors no longer serve as governors. Strategic Plans look forward five, 10 and 20

After three years of service, I can firmly say that my passion for the MAC, its members, and our dedicated employees has only grown stronger. It’s an exciting time for the club as our membership headcount increased in 2013 for the first time in several years. I helped lead that push as
membership co-chairman and would love to continue my efforts to grow the club. It gives me a real sense of pride watching new members and guests come to the MAC and discover all that our club has to offer. This place really is one of a kind! I admit running for the Board in consecutive terms is a unique situation, but I believe my experience would be a real asset moving forward. I would have the rare opportunity to help maintain continuity between the outgoing and incoming Board classes. There are so many new projects and ideas that are just getting off the ground, and I feel obligated to see them through to completion. I’d be honored to receive your vote for the Board of Governors once again.

TEAM TRAINING AT THE MAC
Get your youth sports team in shape with the help of MAC trainers. Here’s what one coach had to say: “This is the second year that I have had my 17U baseball team work out with Paul Helfrich at the MAC, and we have seen tremendous results. The boys begin, for the most part, out of shape and not very flexible. Paul gives them the right amount of stretching exercises as well as conditioning drills. I like the fact that the boys always leave soaking wet from
sweat, and pretty exhausted. That said, the boys love it, recognize the value and importance of it, and collectively asked me to set it up again this year for them. They will be in excellent condition for the beginning of baseball season. I would highly recommend Paul and the MAC for your sports team or your child.” – Sean Nolan
Customized team training is available for nearly all sports – contact Paul Helfrich at 314-539-4453 for more information.

The Women’s Doubles Squash Association (WDSA) Tour made a stop at the West Clubhouse last month for the inaugural St. Louis Open Pro Tournament. The event was one of just nine tournaments on the 2013-14 tour, and MAC squash fans were eager to watch the pros in action and cheer on resident Head Squash Pro Heidi Mather, who competed with partner Vic Simmonds. Tour founder Narelle Krizek , competing with her sister Natarsha McElhinny, rallied to victory in the finals over Meredeth Quick and Steph Hewitt. Several MAC squash players had the opportunity to put their skills to test with the pros in the Women’s and Mixed Pro Am draws. Nancy Holekamp with pro Joyce Davenport won the Women’s, while Craig Parker and pro Meredeth Quick took the A Men’s division, and Bruce Springer and Quick captured the B Men’s division. Special thanks to all the fans who came out to show their support, as well as the sponsors for the event, which included Cardinal Pump, Delta Group Electronics, Harrow, Sangita and the WDSA. If watching the pros in action got you excited to try your hand at the sport or improve your game, the MAC offers squash clinics, leagues and private lessons for youth and adults. Good Fellowship Day at the MAC
As part of the annual tradition, members enjoyed plenty of fitness, food and fun on Good Fellowship Day, hosted by the Fifth Floor Athletic Department. A little friendly competition is always a highlight of the day, including the 3-point and Closest-to-the-Pin contests. In addition to squash and racquetball matches, the day included a round robin basketball tournament consisting of 15-minute games. The two teams with the best record faced off, with Mike Carlson, Jeff Carroll, Larry Drury, Duffy Dunn and Lucas Poelker beating Nick Bahn, Daniel Clinard, James Vreeland, Brian Rodgers and Brian Westre 19-12 in the “Bragging Rights Championship.” The competition wasn’t just limited to the courts, with Andy Gleeson setting a new MAC swimming record in the 50-yard Butterfly in the Over 50 age division. His time was 27.72 seconds, beating the previous record help by Dave Senay of 32.75 seconds. In the rowing event, members competed by age class and weight division. In the Under 40 Lightweight class, Andrew Carter took the best time in the 500-meter, with 1:30.7 seconds, and the Heavyweight went to Gene Frederic with 1:32.8 seconds for the same distance. For the 40-49 Lightweight Class, Rob Wunderlich Jr. captured the best times for both the 500- and 2000-meter, with 1:30.4 seconds and 7:15.6 seconds, respectively. Mark Bahn secured the best time for Ages 60-69 Lightweight in the 2000-meter with 9:11.6 seconds, and John Noce had best time for both distances, 2:12.3 seconds in the 500-meter and 10:19.0 seconds in the 2000-meter. The day’s events also included the chance for members to try out a variety of free fitness classes, from yoga to spinning to boot camp, and relax with the help of a free chair massage. After a morning spent working up a sweat, members headed down to the Sportsman’s Club for a buffet lunch and cold beer.

Weight Training Improves Results On and Off the Court Too often, people looking to lose weight rely solely on cardio, but strength training and conditioning can be a powerful tool in weight loss and maintenance. It can also help athletes in any sport improve their performance. Just ask Karen Stiers. Stiers was referred to MAC Personal Trainer and Licensed Dietitian David Vandeven by Tennis Pro Scott Stutz. She had already achieved a 35-pound weight loss, but weight training was new and foreign to her. However, as she became comfortable with the program, she quickly began to see results. The program helped to tone and tighten her body, including the loose skin left from her weight loss. She wasn’t the only one who noticed – the results have garnered numerous compliments from her fellow
tennis players on her new toned arms (which she is proud to show off). In addition to maintaining her weight loss, she also began to see the payoff for her tennis game, especially her serving power. Stiers was recognized as Most Improved Tennis Player, improvements that Stutz credits to her weight training and conditioning. Most importantly, Stiers has gained confidence on and off the court and has grown to enjoy the workouts more and more. “I would give up a lot of things, but not my workouts with David,” she says. To book an appointment with David Vandeven, MS, RD, LD, CSCS, call 314-704-1105. For more information on all the MAC trainers, visit www.mac-stl.org. (Athletics > Fitness)
Individual and group self-defense classes are now available from experienced black belt instructor Dennis Maginn through the MAC. With more than 20 years of martial arts training and practical teaching experience, Maginn specializes in self defense and combat martial arts, holding Fourth Degree and First Degree Black Belts in the combined arts of Kenpo Karate and Taekwondo and a Brown Belt in Jujitsu. Remembering the 1914 Fire
Marking the 100th anniversary of the fire that destroyed the original MAC clubhouse, the Club took a moment to honor the heroes of the St. Louis Fire Department (SLFD) for their efforts on that day and in the century since. “In my 35 years of firefighting in the city of St. Louis, this is the first time I can remember that any organization of the MAC’s stature has taken the time to remember and honor the St. Louis Fire Department,” SLFD Fire Chief Dennis Jenkerson commented during his remarks at the luncheon. In addition to the recognition presented on behalf of the MAC, both the Club and the Fire Department were honored with a proclamation from St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay. Prior to the luncheon, attendees were able to explore the history of the 1914 fire and the firefighting profession, with equipment, gear and photos on display from the SLFD and

(This account appeared in his column the next day, available online at www. stltoday.com.) In addition, the anniversary of the fire received media coverage on KMOX and Fox 2 News, including an interview with past MAC Governor Tom Dunn. The event also recognized the rebuilding and rebirth of the MAC for years to come. In honor of the day, a framed collection of historic photos will be displayed at the Downtown Clubhouse, bearing these words: “The Missouri Athletic Club of 2014 pays tribute to the members of 1914 for their foresight and perseverance in rebuilding the Club for 100 years of success as an institutional anchor in Saint Louis.”

Restoring & Preserving the MAC Art Collection
Venice Canal - Before Restoration
Some of our members have had the privilege of using reciprocal clubs that have art collections equal in value to those of many public museums. The MAC’s Art Committee formally began in 1940, but a few pieces were acquired by foresighted members of the Wall Street Table before then. During the last two weeks of April, the paintings on display in the Preservation Gallery off the Downtown Clubhouse lobby are the result of the restoration effort undertaken by the MAC Foundation for the Arts. The MAC Foundation for the Arts realized it could play a vital role in the maintenance of the character and history of this venerable institution, and therefore, in 2012 undertook the role of conservator of its art collection, thereby relieving general Club revenue of that expense burden. The annual solicitation of members for contributions to the club’s various charitable endeavors and employees’ holiday fund results in a distribution to the MAC Foundation for the Arts of no more than $2 per contributing member. The paintings on display in this exhibit show the results of
Venice Canal - After Restoration
the expenditure of some of those funds for conservation and restoration of its art collection. Help the Foundation continue this effort when asked to do so annually in November (less than the cost of a third of a glass of tap brew). Stop by the Preservation Gallery and learn something of the historical significance of these works to the Club’s collection and the process of art restoration. All three works were deteriorating in the art storeroom. Each of the three works have their own importance in being selected by the Foundation for restoration. Venice Canal was a gift by one of the Art Committee founders in 1940. Moon and Mist was painted by the architect who supervised the rebuilding of the Clubhouse after the 1914 fire. The Monk represents the re-presentation of a member favorite that has not been on display for many years. The Foundation understands that the Club plans to alleviate further damage to its stored collection by air conditioning the art storeroom, where it houses works not currently on display.
Zach Smithey Art Show
Join us for a special art show, “Twain’s World,” featuring the March/April Artist of the Month Zach Smithey, on Friday, April 18 . Sponsored by the MAC Associates, the 6 p.m. reception at the Downtown Clubhouse is open to all MAC members and the public, and there is no cost to attend. Explore the artist’s works, mingle with fellow members and stop by the Jack Buck Grille afterwards for dinner. To learn more about artist Zach Smithey, visit www.zachsmithey.com. While MAC members and out-of-town guests appreciate the convenience and comfort of the overnight accommodations, one of the comments heard most frequently was that the hallways and common areas were beginning to look outdated and worn. No longer, thanks to the recent overhaul of Floors 7-10 of the Downtown Clubhouse. The hotel renovations are wrapping up, and no detail was overlooked in the process. From new paint and trim to updated lighting to new carpet and artwork, the result is a more modern and inviting look for members and visitors that better matches the ambiance of the overall Club.

Happy Birthday, St. Louis!
If you’ve been to the Downtown Clubhouse recently, you may have noticed a new addition – a four-foot-tall birthday cake. The MAC was selected as one of the Cakeway to the West locations as part of the 250th anniversary for the city of St. Louis. Cakes are being placed at other notable sites throughout the city, and once completed, a mobile app will be launched, sending users on a scavenger hunt to explore the history of the city. The MAC cake was decorated by the Stuttgart Visiting Artists and is located under the valet portico. The app, designed by entrepreneurs (and MAC members) Andrew Couch and Gilda Campos, allows cake hunters to learn about each location and “check in” for prizes. Love Is In the Air at Apollos Spring Concert A poet once said, “In spring, a man’s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love.” What better way to express those feelings than a concert of classic love songs, as the Apollos present their Spring Concert “Love Is In the Air.” All of the songs in this show tell tales of love, the joys and passions as well as the heartaches that can occur. Musical selections are drawn from the Broadway stage, hit films and the popular songbook. “There is Nothin’ Like a Dame” kicks off the show and lays the groundwork for sentimental favorites like “I Only Have Eyes for You,” “So In Love,” “My Heart Will Go On,” “Unchained Melody,” “That’s Amore,” “Hello, Young Lovers,” “Daydream Believer,” “Getting to Know You” plus a few others. Ballroom dancers will grace the stage, and the smaller ensemble will perform some songs in close harmony. Candidates for the Board of Governors will be introduced prior to the show. Join us for an evening of beautiful tunes that will stir your memories of falling in love.
