President’s Column President John Bugh
“All I want for Christmas is an Official Red Ryder Carbine-Action Two-Hundred-Shot Range Model Air Rifle!” I love the holidays and everything that comes with it, including at our house, watching A Christmas Story three or four times in December. The holidays are a great time to be an MAC member. Our dedicated staff works extremely hard to help make the holidays such a special time to be a member. From caroling with the Apollos to seeing A Christmas Carol at the Fox to spending time with Santa, Club events are a great way to build memories with the family and bring out the spirit of the season. The MAC can also take the stress and hassle out of holiday entertaining, with Christmas Eve and Christmas Day dinner options. Spending time with family is one of the highlights of the holidays, but we all know that too many days cooped up inside can quickly lead to bored kids and frazzled parents. The West Clubhouse will once again be offering Holiday Sports Camps over the winter vacation, with halfday and full-day options.
For those worried about gaining a few pounds this time of the year, the Club offers a number of options. Sign up for a basketball or racquetball league, try out cardio tennis, check out a new fitness class or book a session with one of the MAC’s personal trainers.
The holidays are a great time to be an MAC member. Or, if you need some extra motivation, sign up for the 2014 MAC Biggest Loser Contest, which kicks off on Jan. 13. In his last column, General Manager Wally Smith talked about the “little by little” approach. Whether we’re talking about improvements within the Club or improvements with your health, this is a great philosophy, and the MAC’s Athletics and Fitness staff are always there to help you identify and implement those small but worthwhile changes. I’d like to thank all who joined us for the Anniversary Ball, celebrating 110 years of MAC tradition and

memories. It was a great night! Coming up in February, we have another big anniversary to celebrate – the 250th birthday of the city of St. Louis. A group of dedicated volunteers, known as the MAC PAC, recognized what a great opportunity this represents and has been hard at work planning a special event on Feb. 14, 2014, to celebrate. If you’re always stumped for Valentine’s Day ideas, then your problem is solved. More details on this event can be found on page 13 and watch for your invitation in the mail. The CWC in the spotlight this month is the Charitable Society for Children (CSC), chaired by Sam Hopmeier. The MAC has a long tradition of giving back to the St. Louis community, and I want to personally thank Sam and his committee for continuing this good work. Each year, the CSC selects three local charities and collects donations to benefit these worthy causes. It’s a great way for members to donate to local charities that have been properly vetted through the CSC. For more information on CSC and all of our Clubs within a club, visit our website at www.mac-stl.org. (Social > Clubs Within the Club) From my family to yours, I’d like to wish you a wonderful holiday, and I look forward to seeing you at the Club in 2014! “I triple-dog-dare ya!” I will see you around the Club! General Manager
From the General Manager’s Desk Wally Smith
The one thing that invariably happens as you sit down with family and friends around the holiday table is the stories begin to flow. Whether it’s the family legend passed down through the generations or the funny tales of youthful indiscretions, stories are what we remember and share. When I ask members why they are a part of the MAC, I never get an answer outlining a list of benefits or citing a special offer. Instead, what I get are the stories. The story of the friend who encouraged them to join 50 years ago when it cost $3,000 and there was a two-year waiting list. The story of a member’s oldest daughter and her fabulous wedding day in our Missouri Room, and then the three others who followed behind. The story of finding the best environment to nurture a son’s love of tennis – and soon discovering a second home for the entire family. I know that you each have a story of why and when you joined the MAC and your own special reasons. For many, the Platinum Partnership program has been the perfect vehicle to share their story, and that’s exactly the reason we created it for you. Happily, to date, 628 of you are now enjoying enhanced benefits and reduced dues through this program, while significantly contributing to the health and vitality of your Club for years to come. (The goal is 700 before year’s end.) So, what’s your story? Mrs. O’Toole, shown above cutting a rug with Mr. O’Toole at the 110th Anniversary Ball, told me she has had dinner at the MAC every Friday night since she was 4 years old and can never remember the MAC not being central to her family and their lives. Wow! So, please share your story in your circle of friends and invite
them to become a part of this wonderful place. Each one of you has a responsibility as an MAC member to share your story since it is membership by invitation. And frankly, wouldn’t you rather be fellow members with friends and family from your circle? In last month’s column, I referenced a number of capital improvement projects we’re working on around the Club. Although many of these upgrades happen behind the scenes, all are a part of maintaining our high standards and Platinum-level status.
When you see that line on your member statement for capital dues, please keep in mind that this money is there to make a difference you can see and feel, and that makes you proud to call the MAC home and even more proud to show it off to your friends and family. Tell the story! As we work on these smaller projects and little tweaks here and there, your board and leadership are committed to identifying the key strategic initiatives that will truly improve your member experience five, 10 and 20 years from now. These are exciting times, and I could not be prouder to be playing my part. Much more on this as it develops. Now, back to the topic of stories and a few I’d like to share. Yes, the
MAC has some great stories to tell. •We now have the best youth tennis program in the area, and probably the state. •The accolades for our banquet spaces, service and staff continue to roll in from groups who hold their events here. The memories created are incredible, and we were recently selected as the best Wedding Venue in St. Louis. • Last month, we celebrated 110 years and added a priceless piece of Stan Musial memorabilia to our extensive art collection, which was started in 1919 when member JT Romabauer purchased “Windswept Meramec River. Our art today is valued at well over $3.5 million. • Our culinary staff continues to wow members and guests with unique dining experiences. These are great stories, but not nearly as good as the ones I know you have to tell. As members, you’ll create our future stories with your MAC friends and family. And one final thought and clarification. It’s really a “privilege” to share your Club and show off the place you love, while having a hand in determining who becomes a part of the MAC family. I consider it a privilege to be a part of this family, and on behalf of the rest of our MAC staff, I wish you all a very joyous holiday season. Looking forward to creating new stories in the year to come. See you at the Club, Wally P.S. Thank you all for the mountain of letters, texts and phone calls regarding my brain freeze last month on the song “Little by Little,” which is in fact by Robert Plant and on his 1985 album Shaken ‘n’ Stirred. Thanks for setting me straight and Rock On MAC! DECEMBER 2013

GREETINGS TO ALL!
By Executive Chef Barton K. Phillips, C.E.C., Downtown We are fast approaching my favorite time of the year. Your MAC culinary staff are all extremely busy getting ready for the holiday season with the presentation of the Gingerbread and Train display, all of our festive buffets from Breakfast with Santa to Christmas Eve and The Grand Christmas Day Buffet in the Missouri Room, followed by the New Year’s Eve dinner in the Jack Buck Grill. Both clubs will be dressed in holiday color and the experience will be one of goodwill and cheer. In other news, the culinary staff of the
Downtown and West Clubhouses recently came together for a great cause. We participated in the “Taste of the NFL” event, along with several other St. Louis fine dining establishments. We had a great time and helped to raise more than $50,000 for the St. Louis Area Foodbank. As you celebrate this holiday season in those ways that are meaningful to you, I hope it is a time to relax and enjoy family and friends. I look forward to seeing everyone around both Clubhouses in 2014.
RING IN THE NEW YEAR AT THE MAC! Make this New Year’s Eve extra special by celebrating at the Missouri Athletic Club – with both Clubs offering special dinner menus for the evening.

By Kim Steinmetz, MAC Tennis Director
Some tennis players perform better in matches than in practice; however, this is not accomplished with sheer willpower. Most players do well in matches when they know they are prepared and therefore have more confidence. Here are a few ways to boost your confidence: 1. Come to the match having practiced once or twice during the prior week. 2. Follow a fitness plan that includes strengthening as well as interval training. Tennis players do not need the same endurance that a distance runner would need. They have to be able to give bursts of energy, recover quickly and repeat this pattern over and over. 3. Be well rested. Studies show rest is not only good for the body, it’s good for the mind! 4. Get to the courts early to warm up. You don’t need to do a full workout, but 10 minutes of jogging or serving some tennis balls will get the blood flowing, relieve stress and help you get into a good frame of mind. 5. Focus on the present. Don’t think about what happened before you stepped on the court, or about winning or losing. Just plan to play your best, point by point. 6. Be patient with yourself. Playing your best doesn’t mean you’ll have your peak performance, or even that you will

play well. It just means that you’re prepared to try hard, focus on the present, play smart and not fret over mistakes. Going onto the court with these six advantages will definitely boost confidence and increase your chances of playing well. And because this plan is achievable, you will feel empowered and ready for success. It’s never too late to start a plan that will not only improve your tennis game but your mind and body as well. Check out our Cardio Tennis Classes, Personal Trainer Schedules and Tennis Pro Schedules to book a date to begin!

Reduce Stress in the New Year
If a more relaxed and stress-free lifestyle is on your New Year’s resolution list, now’s the time to start with a regular schedule of massage therapy. But there are a number of other reasons to make an appointment with one of the MAC’s experienced massage therapists. Jerrad Benton, who splits his time between the Downtown and West Clubhouses, has been helping MAC members relieve stress, alleviate pain, increase range of motion and improve athletic performance for the past six years. A graduate of the St. Louis College of Health Careers, Jerrad has received specialized training in neuromuscular massage, as well as offering Swedish, deep tissue, trigger point, chair and sports massages. For members looking to reap the numerous benefits of massage, he
recommends starting with a once a month appointment People looking to address specific injuries or conditions may benefit from more frequent visits. Want to give massage a try or just relax after a tough workout? Stop by for a free five-minute chair massage. Longer chair massages are available for $28 for 15 minutes or $39.50 for a half-hour. Or, start your new year resolution now by setting up a standing appointment for a full massage, offered at $62.50 an hour or $39.50 per half-hour. MAC Serves Up Billikens Basketball
Saint Louis University men’s basketball coach Jim Crews visited the MAC just before the start of the season for the annual Billikens Luncheon. As interim head coach in 2012-13, Crews led the Billikens to a school-record 28 victories and the school’s second straight NCAA Tournament bid. Hopes are high for this season; with a number of returning players, SLU is one of the early favorites to win the Atlantic-10 Conference. Coach Crews also turned a number of heads in his first season, earning national coach of the year awards from the Sporting News and the National Association of Basketball Coaches. He, along with star forward Dwayne Evans, will be recognized on Dec. 11 at the Jack Buck Sports Awards banquet with the Carl O. Bauer Award for top amateur sports figures. Coach Jim Crews will return to the MAC in December when he’s recognized with the Carl O. Bauer Award, along with his star forward Dwayne Evans.
SLU Director of Athletics Chris May, who has served in the role since 2008, was also on hand for the Billikens Luncheon.
SLU basketball fans gathered at the MAC for a preview of the upcoming season; the team kicked off a couple of days later with an exhibition win. 22

A FITTING TRIBUTE
As numerous pieces of Stan Musial memorabilia were auctioned off in October, one special item found a new home on display in the Downtown Clubhouse. A portrait of the legendary Cardinal, painted by artist Robert Templeton, was unveiled in the Art Lounge on Oct. 23. While not originally in the plan, the timing could not have been better, as it was just prior to Game 1 of the World Series.
MAC General Manager Wally Smith with Baseball Hall of Famer Red Schoendienst
Stan’s family, including son Dick Musial, were on hand for the unveiling, along with local media. “Dad had so many great friends at the Missouri Athletic Club, so it’s the ideal destination for this painting,” Dick Musial said. For additional photos and video from the event, visit the MAC Facebook page at www.facebook. com/macstl.
Stan’s son, Dick Musial, flew up from his home in Florida for the event, sharing a poem that had been left at his parents’ grave.
The portrait hung in Stan and Biggies Restaurant until it closed in 1986, before finding its way to Stan’s home den.

Attendees dined on delicious sandwiches, scones and pastries, and models, including several MAC governors’ wives, showed off the latest fashions from the CAbi fall line, presented by Kathy Wunderlich. The MAC’s talented pastry chefs captured the theme of the event with handcrafted teapot cakes, which were given away as door prizes along with several gift baskets.
