After seven years of discovery, enchantment and playing outside, Raintree Learning Community will undergo a metamorphosis this winter and emerge as Raintree School, Missouri’s first forest school, in the spring of 2014. A forest school is a place where 11 acres of woods, prairie and stream are the classroom—a living laboratory imparting knowledge, fostering curiosity, and nurturing an “I can do that” mindset that will carry young learners through the rest of their lives. It’s a school where bugs, twigs and leaves are embraced as tiny windows onto life, the universe and everything. With a shiny new building for a base camp, Raintree School will continue its tradition of Reggio Emilia inspired curriculum and collaborative teaching to provide a truly unique early childhood education experience.

To learn more about our unique approach, take in a view of the forest through the 12-foot tall dining room windows, or just say hi, please visit our website at www.undertheraintree.org or call us at (636) 386-0900.

President’s Column

President’s Column President John Bugh

Let me take a guess: lose 10 pounds, go to church every week, drink less and eat healthier? Are any of those on your list of resolutions for 2014? The question now is – which resolutions will be kept and which will be out the window by Super Bowl Sunday? I hope the MAC can be a part of your resolutions and help you reach your health and wellness goals for 2014. Check out page 8 of this issue to get started. Good luck. As we look forward to a great 2014, I would be remiss not to look back at the Club’s accomplishments the past year. We grew membership, added services, increased revenues, aggressively paid down debt and invested in YOUR club. None of this could have been attained without the strong support of the members in 2013. THANK YOU! I hope you and your family had a wonderful holiday season. If you spent any time at the Club during December, you couldn’t help but get in the spirit. I especially enjoyed the beautifully decorated Downtown Clubhouse and the train display, designed by Governor Salter and assembled by the engineering staff. The West Clubhouse was also home to many holiday memories,

hosting Family Night with Santa and a delicious holiday brunch. Thank you to all of our members and their families who make the MAC part of their holiday traditions each year. The MAC was home to another long-standing tradition in December – the 44th Annual Jack Buck Sports Awards, taped and broadcast for the first time on Fox Sports Midwest, along with the regular broadcast on KMOX Radio. What a great opportunity to put the MAC in the spotlight, as well as honoring some local sports greats, including Matt Carpenter, Jim Crews, Dwayne Evans, Chris Carpenter, Aeneas Williams, Chris Pronger, Bill McDermott and our very own Tom O’Toole, Jr. I would like to especially thank MAC member Matt Holliday who presented Chris Carpenter with the Stan the Man Award. The awards weren’t the only time the Club appeared on television in December. MAC facilities and staff were highlighted in the ABC 30 fitness reality show, “The JJK Effect,” hosted by Jackie JoynerKersee. The show follows seven St. Louis personalities in their quest to shape up and get healthy. The last few episodes will air in January on Sunday mornings at 11:30 a.m., or you can catch up with the entire

series online. The MAC has made a number of fitness and athletics improvements in recent years, from new equipment to new pro talent, and this was a great way to show these off to the St. Louis community. I encourage you to consider making your own mark through service to the MAC. The Nominating Committee is now seeking candidates to run for the 2014 election; my time as a governor and officer has been a valuable and rewarding experience. It’s given me a much deeper understanding of the Club, as well as providing me the opportunity to work sideby-side with an amazing group of leaders and staff. And of course, I’ve had the opportunity to connect with so many members – many of who I might never have met through my normal activities at the Club. If you’ve ever considered running for the Board, I invite you to contact me or any of the current governors. The CWC in the spotlight this month is the Book Club, co-chaired by Mark Neill (mark.neill@courts. mo.gov) and Genie McKee (gmckee@maryville.edu). The Book Club meets the second Thursday of the month and reads a wide variety of fiction and nonfiction books. The person who recommends the book leads the discussion. They meet at the West Clubhouse, and Chef Grant serves them a theme-based dinner. Please contact Mark or Genie to lean more. Looking forward to making 2014 a great year – and I will see you around the Club! John Bugh President

It’s that time of year again, when millions embark on New Year’s resolutions. However, 22% of people report breaking those resolutions in the first week, and 60% will have given up by month six. But you have a secret weapon in your arsenal – membership in the Missouri Athletic Club! Check out all the ways the MAC can help you stay focused and meet your goals.

Resolution: Lose Weight

If you’re looking to drop pounds, you’re not alone, as weight loss ranks as the #1 New Year’s resolution. During the contest, you can also enjoy $5 off each onehour session, or $2.50 off each half-hour session, with an MAC personal trainer. The winner will be determined by percentage of weight lost, with prizes awarded to the winner and runner-up. Register now! The deadline to participate is Jan. 6, and the contest runs Jan. 13 – March 21. Contact Rick Schneider at 314-539-4434 or rschneider@mac-stl.org. Even if you don’t participate in the contest, there’s no better time to try out MAC Personal Training. Special packages of $130 for three sessions are now available for new clients – call 314-539-4434 (DT) or 314-539-4453 (West) to book yours.

General Manager

From the General Manager’s Desk Wally Smith

This year, the city of St. Louis will celebrate its sesquicentennial. For those of you whose math skills may be a little rusty, that means its 250th anniversary. Over the years, St. Louis has produced some of the most innovative businessmen, entrepreneurs, talented athletes, creative artists and community leaders – and for the last 110 years, most of those leaders have been proud members of the Missouri Athletic Club. While I’m a relative newcomer to this great city, it didn’t take long to feel the tradition and pride from the people. From tailgating on the lot before a Rams game to riding on the Thanksgiving Day float to watching the Jack Buck Sports Awards, you can’t help but to pick up on the St. Louis vibe. When I talk to MAC members, I can hear the pride in their voice for their Club but also for their high school and this great city that they call home. With all the fanfare and celebration surrounding the 250th anniversary it seemed only fitting that we host a kickoff celebration. After all, the MAC has been here for 110 of those 250 years and has been a foundational cornerstone to this great community. We’re also planning on making it the biggest social event of the year. Plan now to invite your family and friends to join you for this Over-the-Top Birthday Celebration on Feb. 14 at the Downtown Clubhouse. Working with our “MAC PAC,” we foresee 500+ members and guests filling our storied Missouri

Ballroom and having a fabulous time in celebration of the city that we all love. This will be a great opportunity to show off your Club and make some of those MAC memories with fellow members and city leaders. You will receive your personal invitation shortly in the mail, and you can check out the back cover of this issue for event details. It will be a night to remember!

This year, the city of St. Louis will celebrate its sesquicentennial. We’re also waiting anxiously to hear whether the MAC was selected as a “Cakeway to the West” location. This really fun part of the year-long celebration comes complete with a new city “mobile app,” which is under development by our new members Andrew Couch and Gilda Campos, owners of CandyLab and winners of one of the Arch Grants last year. As noted above, there is always an MAC connection. We’ll keep you posted, and congratulations to CandyLab on this great project and start of their business here in St. Louis. We’ll be hosting another event in 2014 in honor of MAC history – this one of a more somber nature. This year represents the 100th anniversary of the fire that destroyed our original MAC clubhouse and also claimed the lives of thirty members and

seven firemen. At the time, many wondered if the young MAC would ever recover, but we all know the ending to that story. No organization is without its challenges, but it’s how you respond to and endure those challenges that determine your history and your future. It’s also the leaders and people involved who make it happen. Later this spring, we’ll take a moment to remember that tragic incident but also to give thanks to our St. Louis Fire Department for all they do and also thanks for all our successes and achievements since that sad day. As the holiday season winds down and we can all get back to work, we have a lot to be thankful for. One thing I am most thankful for is all the outstanding MAC employees I get to work with every day. Some of them you see regularly, and others you may never see working diligently behind the scenes. Regardless, each plays a significant role in maintaining our statue, programs and service as a Platinum-level Club. The Employee Holiday Fund was incredible this year, and each and every employee send their thanks and their family’s thanks for your generosity. Everyone’s holiday was that much better because of you, and on behalf of all our staff, we thank you very, very much. Now, let’s get busy with 2014 and on to the future. See you at the Club, Wally

MAC Junior Tennis players Trisha Sundaram and Abby Carpenter were recently recognized with Sportsmanship Awards. “One of our strongest endeavors in the tennis program is to create good sports on and off the court, not just good tennis players, so we couldn’t be prouder,” says MAC’s Tennis Director Kim Steinmetz. Abby, who is a junior at Lafayette High School, was recognized with

the G18 Junior Sportsmanship award at the St. Louis District Annual Awards. Trisha, who was recognized at the November Sweet 16 Tournament, has been taking lessons at the MAC for the past year and recently joined the Junior Tennis program when her family became members. She began playing tennis at the age of 6 and started competing in USTA tournaments at 9. Over the

past few years, she has certainly made her mark, achieving high USTA rankings of 14th in the nation in the girls 12 and under and 57th in the girls 14 and under divisions. The 15-year-old freshman at Marquette High School was ranked #1 in the girls 14 and under division of USTA Missouri Valley five-state section and is currently ranked #8 in the girls 16 and under division.

Massage Benefits Arthritis Sufferers

By Mark Friedman, BS, LMT, West Clubhouse A recent article in the professional journal Massage details research showing the many benefits of massage in reducing arthritis pain while increasing mobility. Osteorthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease in which cartilage that covers joint surfaces deteriorates causing pain and movement loss. Early symptoms include stiffness that may last less than 30 minutes that dissipates with movement. Progression of the disease includes increased pain, restricted joint movement, tenderness and sometimes grating sensations. Swelling of tendons and joint capsules ultimately cause joint enlargement and sometimes joint misalignment. Strength training and aerobic activity have been shown to reduce pain and improve physical function. Massage can also provide some of these same benefits of loosened muscles and increased blood flow for arthritis sufferers. Tiffany Field, Ph.D., Director of the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine, states, “Regular massage of muscles and joints, whether by a licensed therapist at a spa or by self-massage at home, can lead to a significant reduction in pain for people with arthritis.” According to the Arthritis Foundation, “In [Dr.] Field’s research and other recent studies on the effects of massage for arthritis symptoms, regular use of the simple therapy led to improvements in pain, stiffness, range of motion, hand grip strength and overall function of the joints.” A study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine also showed full-body Swedish massage greatly improved symptoms of knee OA in a program of twice weekly massage for four weeks and once a week for an additional four weeks. See one of our MAC massage therapists to help alleviate your Osteoarthritis pain. To book an appointment at West, call 314-539-4433. For the Downtown therapists, contact Teah (314-539-4431), Jerrad (314-539-4491) or Stephanie (314-539-4481). Note: It is important for people with OA or any other chronic pain to consult their physician to ensure massage is safe for them.

A Holly Jolly Holiday!

In December, the Downtown and West Clubhouses were transformed into holiday wonderlands to bring cheer to all who celebrate at the MAC. The most anticipated event was, of course, the arrival of Santa and Mrs. Claus, who made three stops this year to visit with MAC children. In addition to meeting Santa, Family Night and Breakfast with Santa both offered young guests plenty of delicious holiday treats and fun activities, including gingerbread-house and cookie decorating, crafts, a magician and more. Many families returned to celebrate Christmas Eve and Christmas Day at the Club with a delicious meal. Thank you to all our MAC families who helped to make the season merry and bright! EDUCATION

Motivate a Love for Learning in Your Child

As a parent, you want your children to learn. But how can you actually instill a love of learning? Too often, parents feel forced to resort to cajoling, begging and threatening their children to study and learn, and in response, students turn away from what they see as nagging. Here are a few behaviors that can facilitate motivation for learning. None of these by itself is a magic wand, but used together can help inspire a passion for and commitment to learning, both inside and outside of school.

Actively demonstrate your value for learning.

The basic question here is, “Can your child see that you are still an active learner?” Do you read books, go to the library, watch educational TV programs, visit museums, write letters or attend local school functions? Do you discuss ideas at home, share opinions on social and political change or wonder out loud about new scientific and aesthetic discoveries? Do you read to you children, play educational games with them or facilitate their involvement in creative projects? Modeling is a powerful incentive to children’s learning. If they see you doing it, then they know it’s worthwhile.

Show a nonthreatening interest in your child’s learning.

This means that you care and want to know what your child is learning, but not for the purposes of criticism or surveillance.

EDUCATION The dinner table is an excellent setting for exploration of new things your child has learned at school. On these occasions, your goal should be to understand and share in the enjoyment of your child’s learning, not to focus on grades or test scores. Have your child teach you what he or she

learned in school that day – putting the lesson into their own words helps students retain what they learn.

Focus on encouragement, rather than praise.

By acknowledging effort as well as success, you tell a child that the intrinsic act of learning is valued and help build an appreciation of learning. Research shows encouragement has a much bigger effect on a child’s motivation than praise. What’s the difference? Praise focuses on the results, uses opinion words like “great” or “wonderful,” and is typically given when the child performs as you had hoped. On the other hand, encouragement notices effort and progress and can be given regardless of the child’s performance. For example, Andrews Academy first-grader Andrew Chen “That didn’t work out the way you performs a science experiment. Andrews Academy of Creve Coeur 888 N. Mason Road St. Louis, MO 63141 314-878-1883 www.andrewsacademy.com Andrews Academy is a private, independent school for children Jr. Kindergarten (4 year olds) through grade 6. The school encourages students to maximize their intellectual, physical, social, and emotional growth by offering an advanced curriculum in a traditional setting. All academic disciplines are paramount but special emphasis is given to mathematics and science. Special classes include art, music, computers, library class, physical education, Spanish, and public speaking. Private piano, strings, band, and Chinese language lessons are also offered on campus. The average class size is 14. In an atmosphere of respect and compassion, Andrews Academy’s internationally diverse student body has the unique opportunity to reach unlimited goals both academically and socially.

planned, did it? What do you think you might do differently next time?” Words of praise lead your child to rely on your assessment of his or her accomplishments, while words of encouragement help to form their own positive assessment.

Get involved in your child’s school.

The student, teacher and parent all play significant roles in determining how motivated a student is to learn. As parents, you can do your part by being involved in the life of those schools that educate your children. Be positive about their school – your attitude does rub off on your child. When possible, mention that the latest social studies unit sounds interesting or the upcoming field trip should be exciting. Say a good word about your child’s teacher, too.

EDUCATION Encourage your child to be resilient. Resilient children

are ready for whatever life throws at them. In order to be resilient, children need to develop or possess the following characteristics: • A strong belief that an adult in their lives will always be there with love and support. • Ability to solve many of their own problems. • Ability to focus on their own strengths. • Regard mistakes as something that happens to everyone and something to learn from. A resilient child is also likely to be a motivated child. When a child is not resilient, believing he or she has no strengths to bounce back from adversity, motivation drops sharply.

Encourage resilience by: • Empathizing with your child. Before acting, try to see the situation through their eyes. • Provide your child with reasonable choices to practice the art of decision-making. • When you can see that your motivational strategies are not working, be willing to try something new. Each child learns and processes information in different ways – this can be especially evident if you have multiple children. • Support your child’s interests and talents. If your child is struggling in school, his part in the school play may be the only thing saving his self-esteem, so celebrate this talent.

Given the choice between ability and hard work as the most important key to success in school (and life), experts say hard work is hands-down the most important. By finding ways to motivate children to work hard and make the most of their educational opportunities, parents can help children use whatever strengths and abilities they have now or can develop in the future.

Education

EDUCATION Mary Institute and Saint Louis Country Day School (MICDS) 101 N. Warson Road St. Louis, MO 63124 314-995-7367 www.micds.org MICDS is a nonprofit, independent, college preparatory school offering non-sectarian education. It consists of the Ronald S. Beasley Lower School, for grades Junior Kindergarten-4; Middle School, offering a coordinate model of single-gender education in the core curricular classes, for students in grades 5-8; and the Upper School for grades 9-12. MICDS is recognized as one of the nation’s leaders in independent education. Small class sizes create a spirit of community and intellectual exchange. The three divisions of the MICDS academic program provide continuity and consistency in a nurturing and challenging environment. Each division promotes teaching the individual to think creatively and logically, to master learning skills and subject matter, and to embrace a lifelong love of learning. Technology, incorporated into the classroom at every level, is a vital resource in accomplishing these goals. The 100-acre campus is designed to support an excellent academic experience and includes state-of-the-art classrooms, labs, athletic facilities and art studios. At MICDS, the mission is to help students discover their unique talents and calling, preparing them for higher education and a life of purpose and service as an engaged citizen of our ever-changing world. To learn more, join us for Curriculum Night (Grades 7 -12) on Jan. 9, or for Lower School Preview Night on Jan. 14. For more information visit micds.org/ADMISSIONS.

Artist of the Month – Martha Hayden

After graduating from The Art Institute of Chicago in 1962, Martha Hayden traveled to Europe on a fellowship and continued her studies at the Schule des Sehens in Salzburg, Austria, with the renowned Expressionist painter Oskar Kokoschka. Afterwards, she continued to travel, study and paint throughout Europe before returning to the United States. Today, Hayden divides her painting time between New York City and southern Wisconsin but also explores new perspectives by traveling and participating in artists’ residencies in other regions.

Hayden’s work has won more than 50 awards and been exhibited in more than 450 regional and national museum and gallery exhibitions, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Academy Museum in New York City, Dartmouth College and The Chicago Public Library, among others. Her work is included in many private and public collections, including the Museo de Arte Moderno in Brazil, The Smithsonian and The Brooklyn Museum. Martha Hayden’s work will be on display at the Downtown Clubhouse throughout the months of January and February.

If you are interested in purchasing any of the work that is displayed at the Club, contact Wendy Descher at 314-539-4438.

MAC Members Spread Holiday Cheer to Employees The MAC Board of Governors participated in the annual holiday tradition of serving up delicious Thanksgiving and Christmas feasts at both the Downtown and West Clubhouses. Employees also had a chance to celebrate in midDecember when checks from the holiday fund were distributed, enjoying refreshments and a visit from Santa. Nearly 350 full- and part-time employees help to provide Platinum-level service to members, whether you

see them at the clubhouses or they work diligently behind the scenes. The Employee Holiday Fund was established 110 years ago as a way to help valued employees remain loyal to the Club, while also doing away with the inconveniences of tipping. On behalf of all MAC employees, a special thank you to the Board of Governors and all Club members for their generous contributions this holiday season.

Celebrate at the MAC!

The Robertson family chose the MAC for son Trey’s first birthday.

Charitable Society Selects 2014 Charities

The MAC Charitable Society for Children is pleased to announce the three charities selected for support in 2014. Assistance League of St. Louis: This all-volunteer service organization touches the lives of thousands of children and adults in St. Louis by seeking out unmet needs in the community. Programs include providing new school uniforms and shoes for deserving students, teddy bears to comfort children in traumatic situations, activity kits for hospitals and personal care gift bags for women and children in shelters. Kids in the Middle: Founded in 1977, KITM helps children, parents and families thrive during and after divorce through counseling, education and support. It is the only agency of its kind in the region providing a whole-family approach to counseling families experiencing separation, divorce and remarriage. Missouri KIDS: Missourians Who Kare for Injured and Disabled Students is a nonprofit organization that helps student athletes in the state who have suffered permanent disabling injuries. Since its inception, more than $500,000 in aid has been provided to help with home modifications, assistive equipment, customized vehicles and college scholarships. Throughout 2014, the Charitable Society for Children will raise funds to be split among the three charities. This past year, the CSC raised more than $32,000 through donations from MAC members and employees. Each year, MAC employees can designate a portion of their paychecks to the CSC; in 2013, the campaign raised more than $2,800. The three 2013 charities – Boys Hope Girls Hope, College Bound and Voices for Children – will be presented with their checks at the Rat Pack event on Jan. 24. Thanks to all who contributed in 2013, and to all who nominated charities for 2014!

FYC on the Watch for GMOs

At its January meeting, the Forever Young Club will again consider the influence of Genetically Modified Organisms in our food. The debate over GMOs among scientists is unending, but for most of us it’s a decision of whether to eat, or not, food that has been modified. And as residents of the St. Louis region, we may or may not support Monsanto’s position on GMOs. Join us in welcoming a man who has a position, and maybe some answers, on these compelling questions. Phil Eppard is a Ph.D. research scientist at Monsanto and is currently Director of Regulatory Affairs for Latin America North. Dr. Eppard knows the GMO question from both sides, and everyone is invited to join FYC in meeting him.

In November, the Apollos took members and guests on a trip back to an era of social change. Led by Director Marc Strathman, the Fall Concert showcased popular songs of the 1960s, including “Yesterday,” “Yellow Submarine,” “When I’m 64,” and “Blowin’ in the Wind.” A couple of weeks later, the Apollos took their talents on the road, visiting area nursing homes to spread holiday cheer through song. Additional photos from the events are available on the MAC Facebook page.
