President’s Column President John Bugh

After a very long winter, it’s finally starting to feel like spring in St. Louis. And with spring comes a St. Louis favorite – the return of Cardinals baseball. In addition to food and drink specials before and after each game, the MAC is a great home base for local and out-of-town ticket-holders, as evidenced by the sellout crowd the Club had for the first Cards-Cubs series. If you haven’t had a chance to check out the new hotel remodel for yourself, it’s definitely worth a look (or an overnight stay). This project was designed to create a more modern and inviting appearance for members and guests that better matches the ambiance of the rest of the Club. I hope you’ll find it to be a space that you are proud to show off to clients, friends and guests. I couldn’t agree more with this month’s MAC Champion, Mike Schoedel, who commented, “The recent upgrades are such that we are encouraging out-of-town guests to consider the MAC before anything else.” This renovation is just one example of how we continue to invest in your Club. Look for many more projects and improvements in the months and years to come.

The other clue that summer is just around the corner is the opening of the West Clubhouse pool on May 24. Check out pages 14-15 for a complete list of upcoming pool events and summer programs in store. This spring, we had a record signup for the Penguins Swim & Dive Team, and I know my family is already excited for the upcoming season. While we often think of the West Clubhouse as the hub for families, especially in the summer, both Clubhouses offer great family-friendly programming throughout the year. In fact, one of the MAC’s longest-running traditions, the Father-Daughter Banquet, is coming up later this month at the Downtown location. I enjoyed the return of the Father-Son Banquet earlier this spring with my son, and of course, wouldn’t miss this special evening with my two daughters. Throughout my term as president, I have taken the opportunity in this column to highlight the various Clubs Within the Club. But to give you an indication of just how much the MAC has to offer, I was only able to get around to half of them. So my apologies to the Apollos, Associates, Bridge Club, Craft Beer Club, Dance

Club, Forever Young, Toastmasters, Wine Society and Whiskey & Fine Spirits Club. The MAC offers something for every interest; if you haven’t found your niche yet, visit the Clubs Within the Club section of the website and get involved. In my first column as your president, I said I was looking forward to meeting many members this year – and that has truly been one of the highlights of my term. More importantly than just meeting, I’ve had the opportunity to work alongside, learn from and build great memories with so many of you. First, I have to thank my fellow officers for their support – Judith, John, Troy and Terry – along with the rest of the MAC Board of Governors. Real change and progress takes time, but hopefully we have left the Club a little better than we found it. Thank you for entrusting it to us. Finally, like most organizations, much of the work that keeps the MAC moving along takes place behind the scenes. Thank you to our General Manager Wally Smith and his team of staff for supporting our board and making things look effortless. I leave the MAC in the capable hands of President-elect Dean Eggerding and the newly elected officers, and I look forward to the great things they’ll accomplish. While I may be signing off as president, I also know I will still see you around the Club! John Bugh President

General Manager

From the General Manager’s Desk Wally Smith

In recent Cherry Diamond articles and conversations I’ve had with members, we’ve talked a lot about the improvements taking place at both Clubhouses. It must be apparent that we are excited with the upgrades as we strive to spend our smart money first where a return on the investment is quickly realized. We are proud to show the upgrades off, and I believe some transparency and discussion on how we are funding these initiatives is important to share. Each month you see a line item on your statement for capital dues. Believe it or not, your monthly contribution combined with all of your fellow members generates close to $1 million per year. The power of the many is clearly at work here, and these funds pay the Club’s annual debt and provide a modest but essential amount of additional money to fund improvements. You can see your Capital dollars at work in the updated hotel hallways and new member services desk Downtown. Several members who do not personally have a need for overnight rooms have said the upgrades make it an easy recommendation for clients and out-of-town guests. That’s where that return comes into play. You can hear your contributions in the new audiovisual system in the Missouri Ballroom. Only when it’s not up to standard is it noticed, and we are so happy it is now a selling point rather than a sore point. You can feel your contributions in the refinished squash courts and in all the new fitness equipment and pool furniture added last spring. This month we will resurface all eight of our tennis courts and freshen up both pavilions for our tennis players. Don’t forget projects that are not as visible but necessary, such as the roof repairs and a piece or two of new kitchen equipment, allowing operations to continue along smoothly. I hear from members all the time regarding changes and facility

CD May 2014.indd 5

improvements they’d like to see that we not only welcome but encourage. If we want to remain relevant to both current and future members, smart planning, smart spending and smart ongoing investment are a must. Planning and completing these projects are only possible through a predictable and sustainable Capital budget. Picture the Capital and Operating budgets as two separate bank accounts with different purposes. Our Operating account is money in and money out for the everyday ongoing business activities. The Capital budget funds our longterm debt, now being paid down by about $800,000 per year, leaving the balance for much needed projects. As noted in prior articles, we purposefully elected to not increase dues or fees the last two budget cycles and to rather grow our business opportunities, which we have done fairly well. As we start our planning for the next budget cycle, it appears that generating additional funding is the prudent thing to do. The good news is a Capital fee increase for our members is just $2.40-$2.90 per member per month. When combined, this generates approximately $80,000 per year. Your MAC Board of Governors authorized this increase at the April meeting, and it’s set to go into effect in June. $80,000 is a lot of money that will go right back into improving your Club. We will share specifically the next round of upgrades as we update our five-year plan in conjunction with setting next fiscal year’s agenda. As budgets develop, we remain mindful of the importance of maintaining a healthy operating budget. While our Operating businesses have grown the past couple years primarily due to increased revenues in our Three Buckets (Membership, Room & Catering Growth) there are challenges on the horizon. Like all businesses, we’re keeping tabs on implementation of the Affordable Care Act and

how it affects healthcare expenses. In addition, our efforts in Pension Funding Stabilization currently show the need for funding in real dollars beginning in fall 2014 and, short of relief, becoming substantial in 2015 and beyond. Although there could be some relief for all businesses coming out of Washington at some point, we need to plan as if it will not while continuing our legislative efforts. As our businesses grow so does our staff, and offering fair and attractive compensation packages is crucial to hiring and retaining the best. So while energy prices spiked this winter and the cost of Food and Beverage are on the rise, dues have remained the same for the past two plus years, by design. And, by design, dues have actually decreased for many members, due to our Platinum Partnership program. If you have not taken advantage of this terrific program you should; it’s good for you and for the MAC. Dues increases are never taken lightly by either staff or our Board and must be driven by fiscally responsible plans and budgets. At this point it apprears some level of dues increase will be appropriate and will be determined in conjunction with our budget process, our Finance Committee and our Board. I suspect an amount will be implemented with our new fiscal year and fully disclosed as we go. Again for some good news. If the maximum increase authorized by the Club’s By-Laws ends up being the number, it would translate to approximately $14 per member per month. I applaud our Board for their forward-thinking and proactive approach in our planning and budgeting process and for taking the steps now to plan for our future. These are exciting times, and I’m thrilled to play my part. See you at the Club, Wally

CARDINALS FEVER

IS BACK AT THE MAC!

Not ones to let a little rain dampen their enthusiasm, Cardinals fans packed the Downtown Clubhouse before the home opener on April 7, celebrating a win over the Cincinnati Reds. Make the MAC your home base to cheer on the Cardinals every game this season!

PARK HERE

Avoid the traffic, park in the Downtown Clubhouse garage and take advantage of round-trip transportation for all Cardinals home games. Shuttle service will begin one hour prior to scheduled game times, departing from the front of the Clubhouse.

EAT HERE

The Downtown Clubhouse is the perfect place to grab a bite or a drink before and after each home game. In addition to the regular menus in the Sportman’s Club and Jack Buck Grille, the Grille will offer a Beer and Specialty Brat Combo for just $9 (the price of just a beer at the Stadium!) If you’re short on time, you can even take it to-go. For the convenience of members, the Grille will also be open for all Sunday home games.

SHOP HERE

You can never have too much Cardinals gear! Stop by the Downtown or West Clubhouse Pro Shops to check out the latest selection of team apparel and merchandise for men, women and children. Both Pro Shops are open seven days a week.

STAY HERE

If you want to avoid the drive home after the game, the MAC offers convenient and comfortable overnight rooms and suites at competitive rates. You’ll also be proud to show off your Club to out-of-town guests and clients following the recent top-to-bottom renovation of the hotel hallways and common areas.

Call 314-231-7220 now to make reservations.

Note: Per the MAC Dress Code, casual attire is permitted on all home game days. Please remember, collared shirts should be worn underneath any jersey, and hats and caps may be worn only in the Lobby area.

BUNNIES

BRUNCHES

The MAC was at the heart of many family Easter celebrations, with two chances to meet the Easter Bunny and delicious brunches at both Clubhouses. A beautiful spring day was the perfect setting for the West Clubhouse Easter Egg Hunt. After a buffet breakfast and visits with the bunny, kids young and old lined up to fill their baskets with eggs. For Easter Sunday, members had the choice of brunch at the West or Downtown Clubhouses. Keeping with tradition, the Downtown lobby was transformed into a petting zoo for young visitors. And of course, everyone’s favorite bunny was on hand for photos. A sell-out crowd enjoyed traditional brunch favorites, as well as an array of desserts and treats.

Save the Date

There is an old saying: “You can’t really understand another person’s experience until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes.” Walk a Mile in Her Shoes asks men to literally walk one mile in women’s high-heeled shoes. It’s a light-hearted event about a serious subject – sexual violence against women. Join your fellow members and the YWCA Metro St. Louis on Saturday, June 5, to show your support for this event, which begins and ends at the Downtown Clubhouse. Registration begins at 5 p.m. in the parking lot adjacent to the MAC, and the walk kicks off at 6 p.m. Register online at www.ywcastlouis.org.

Mike Schoedel, Apex Oil Co., has been a member of the Missouri Athletic Club for three years.

How do you use the MAC in your daily life? We initially joined because we live close to the West Clubhouse and wanted a place where our family could get involved together. My wife and I use the workout facility and fitness classes on a daily basis, and we eat as a family at the Stan Musial Grill at least twice a week. Friday nights have become a staple for the kids activities with Coach Eric, parents vs. kids dodgeball games and dining with friends. What’s your approach to recruiting new members? My wife and I have recruited four or five families, and our main selling point is that it’s a year-round club with activities for all ages. Most golf and country clubs are quiet during the cold months. You get a lot for your money with the MAC – yearround kids activities, special events

MAC Champions are those members who go above and beyond in using the Club and helping to fill the three Buckets (Membership, Rooms and Catering) to help the MAC prosper.

Downtown, fitness facilities and regular interaction with other members. How do you utilize the MAC’s dining and catering services? I’m fortunate to be on several boards that meet periodically at West or Downtown, and we enjoy the interaction with the staff. As a family, we eat regularly at West and visit the Downtown Clubhouse for most Cardinals games and special events. This year’s Valentine’s Party/Celebration was awesome! How do you use the overnight guest rooms? We use the downtown rooms for auctions, special parties and the periodic weddings. The recent upgrades are such that we are encouraging out-of-town guests to consider the MAC before anything else. What advice would you give to fellow members in their recruitment efforts? Everyone is more cost-conscious today, and no other club in town can provide this much activity at such a great price. Show prospective members how much you enjoy being a member. We have met some great families, young and older, through our membership. The connection to the downtown location has given us a greater appreciation of St. Louis – where else can you get two experiences (West and Downtown) for such a great price?

Artist of the Month – Jennifer Hayes

Jennifer Hayes is this month’s featured artist in the MAC Art Gallery at the Downtown Clubhouse. With a specialty for painting live, she has brought her artistic touch to gatherings coast to coast, creating paintings on location everywhere from a beach wedding in Miami to Vegas Uncork’d to a wine launch in San Diego. Her work has been embraced by Celebrity Chef Hubert Keller, who features her paintings at his restaurants in Mandalay Bay, Las Vegas and San Francisco. Locally, you can view her paintings at the Four Seasons, Prime 1000, Exotic Motors Midwest and Bar Napoli. “Passion is what drives my creative work,” Hayes says. “You see it in the bright, bold colors that dominate both my figurative and abstract paintings.

They are a celebrate of texture, color and curves.” Her signature style is achieved by applying vibrant colors with a palette knife in a thick paint application. More of her work can be viewed at www.JenniferHayesSTL.com. If you are interested in purchasing the work on display, contact Wendy Descher at 314-5394438 or wdescher@mac-stl.org.

Missourians Who Kare for Injured and Disabled Students A severely disabling injury can have a devastating impact on any individual, both physically and emotionally. Imagine for a second when that injury happens to a young student athlete. Doug Landis was injured in a wrestling accident in 1975 when he

26

MAY 2014

CD May 2014.indd 26

was in his teens. Paralyzed from the neck down, his depression seemed insurmountable at times. But a dare to outdraw his brother catapulted Doug out of his depression into a life of purpose. He now holds a pen or pencil in his mouth to create works of art that are internationally known. The outpouring of support for Doug after his accident was so great that it led to the beginning of Missouri K.I.D.S., or Missourians Who Kare for Injured and Disabled Students. “It has grown into a phenomenal organization that helps people in many ways, and I am proud to be associated with it,” Doug says. Since 1975, Missouri K.I.D.S. has pursued its mission of providing young student athletes in the state of Missouri who suffer permanent disabling injuries the special equipment, resources and support they need to best overcome their physical limitations and confidently work toward a successful, independent adulthood. This support includes direct aid and referral services for injured students and their families. Frequently, after being hospitalized for months due to their injuries, students return home to a world where wheelchairs won’t fit through the doors and light switches are out of reach. In addition, families must face the financial impact of lifelong medical expenses, rehabilitative care and home modifications. Missouri K.I.D.S. provides quality of life resources designed to help injured students help themselves, including • Grants for customized vans and accessories • Electric wheelchairs and beds

• Chair lifts • Home modifications, including ramps and remodels • SAEBO rehabilitation devices • ERGYS stationary bikes • College tuition assistance, books and computers • Adaptive athletic equipment, such as racing wheelchairs or rugby chairs Student-athletes who become injured may apply for aid, and the process includes a visit from one of the organization’s board members to determine the specific needs. Grants are determined by a vote of the Board of Directors based on this report and supporting documentation. Recipients may continue to receive resources from the organization long after their injuries. Take for example Greg Houck. Greg was injured in a bicycle accident in 1986 and has been a member of the Missouri K.I.D.S. family ever since. He’s shown that his participation in athletics didn’t have to end with his injury; he has played competitive wheelchair rugby for years. He’s also a successful businessman who volunteers his time to help mentor the next generation of recipients. Visit www.missourikids.org to learn more about the organization and how you can get involved. Missouri KIDS is one of the MAC Charitable Society for Children’s three selected charities for 2014. You can provide your support through a onetime or monthly donation; download a form from the MAC website at www. mac-stl.org (Social > CWCs > Charitable Society for Children.

In 1944, three young men who would become lifelong friends flew the angry skies over Nazi Germany. They’ll relive their stories and answer questions at the May 16 Forever Young Club meeting, 11:30 a.m. at the West Clubhouse.
