President’s Column President John Bugh
This month, we’ll toast 110 years of MAC tradition at the Anniversary Ball on Nov. 15. We hope everyone comes out for this evening of delicious food, music, dancing and memories. As I write this, we have nearly 200 reservations, so please be sure to call the Club at 314539-4470 to book your spot. See page 21 for more details. As the MAC approaches its 110th birthday, it feels like our beloved Cardinals have made the playoffs most of those years. What a great run – four World Series in 10 years! Last month we unveiled a portrait of the greatest Cardinal of all time, Stan Musial. The portrait was acquired from the Musial family and is proudly displayed in the Art Lounge at the Downtown Clubhouse. Stop by to see this great tribute to Stan the Man. I know we’re all in the midst of planning our holiday festivities and parties – and the MAC can help you every step of the way. In addition to the traditional Thanksgiving Brunch and Buffet Dinner, the West Clubhouse will be offering “Thanksgiving-To-Go” this year for those who want to dine at home without all the work in the
kitchen. (See page 11 for more details.) Christmas celebrations at the Club include Breakfast with Santa, Family Night with Santa, Holiday Brunch and Christmas Eve and Day Dinners. With so many choices available, it’s easy to build holiday family memories at the MAC.
With so many choices available, it’s easy to build holiday family memories at the MAC. If you’re trying to find a spot for your office or organization’s holiday party, the MAC is the easy choice. It’s flexible enough to host groups from 10 to 400, and the professional catering and event staff go the extra mile to make each meeting and party special. Be sure to book your space and rooms early. The CWC in the spotlight this month is the Rod and Gun Club. In addition to hosting a
Wild Game Dinner, 15 members of the Club recently competed in the 2013 Interclub Sporting Clays Championship at Strathalbyn Farms Club, earning MAC the win for the second year in a row. Congratulations to our winning team of Henry Schwetye, John McCadden, Chris Hyams, James Schwetye and Todd Kaske and to Henry Schwetye as high shooter for the day! As the weather turns to fall, many of our members will head to the nearest duck blinds. If you would like more information on the Rod and Gun Club, contact Chris Hyams at 314-581-3275 or visit the MAC website. (Social > CWCs > Rod and Gun Club). There’s always so much going on the MAC. The Club works hard to keep you connected through publications like this one, as well as the weekly Buffet and CWC a la Carte newsletters. In addition, be sure to visit the website and follow along on Facebook and Twitter for the latest updates and photos from events. This is Your Club, and we want you to make the most of it. General Manager
From the General Manager’s Desk Wally Smith
Led Zeppelin is arguably the greatest band of all time. In fact, “When the Levee Breaks” is rocking in the background as I type. I would have bet that Zep did a song called “Little by Little” but after a rather in-depth search, no such title exists, so I have to conclude that “little by little” is a lyric rather than a title. How could I be so wrong all these years? Well, I’m now on a quest to work my way through the entire Zeppelin library in search of the lyric “little by little” and the actual song title. Why? Well I have been quoting “little by little” for years in reference to my approach to Clubdom and all the needs associated therein and herein. I’ve relished working with, training and mentoring a number of smart, young, up-and-coming managers over the last 30+ years. The lesson of “little by little” has been impactful and my motto for as long as I can remember. I guess it’s akin to eating the proverbial elephant “one spoonful at a time.” It’s the sanity reference when one of our young guns gets overwhelmed with the size of the task or responsibility. It’s the go-to path because one small success leads to another then another and then another, again and again. It’s “take a deep breath” and pick the little part of the bigger piece possessing the wallop that leads to the next great thing. Now to some that may very well be balderdash and you’re asking, what the heck is this guy talking about here? If you remember last month’s Cherry
Diamond I promised a 2013-2014 Capital Project Update and, being a man of my word, here we go. We aren’t quite ready for those sexy projects everyone loves; rather, we’re still shoring up the flanks. Out West, we will refinish the court floor for all you squash enthusiasts. For our tennis players, we have the stadium courts ready for new surfacing. Another not-sosexy project will be re-covering the chairs in our main dining room and a couple of new pieces of kitchen
The lesson of “little by little” has been my motto for as long as I can remember. equipment for Chef Grant and the kitchen staff. For our swimmers, we plan to fence the grassy area next to the pool so the kids have a spot to run and play. For our Downtown awesome old clubhouse we have some love scheduled as well. Again, it’s not too sexy but so needed. We have some very old leaky roof drains that need to be patched. We will tweak our back hallway to incorporate our security function and create a manned presence at what has actually become our main entry point. There are several offices on that hallway that are under repair, and the back elevator landing will be cleaned up and readied for guest use in various situations.
Now for a more interesting project. We will rework our hotel room hallways and pull our lobby look and feel upwards, spreading that ambiance throughout floors 7-10. It may not be very sexy to all, but it’s more fun, visible and impactful than our new roofs. There is also some capital designated for kitchen equipment for Chef Bart and his crew, which is long overdue as well. “Little by little” these steps lead us to the next thing then the next as we wrestle this elephant to the ground. The list is long and never-ending, but the vision and destination are clear – “Obvious Platinum” in all we do. And I conclude with one more question. Are we having any fun yet? As I began this article with one of my favorite tunes, the Cards just made it into the World Series. Now it’s one game at a time. The Blues are 7 and 1 due to Coach Hitchcock building one part after another. And the Rams just got crushed by the Panthers but have no worries. Coach Fisher is a “little by little” kind of guy, and all his tweaks will begin paying big dividends too. So yes we are! What a great town to live and play in. Go St. Louis, and let’s go MAC! Thanks for your time in reading my wandering narrative. And, thank you for working the MAC into your routine just one more time each month. I hope to have the name of that song for you in December and will certainly enjoy the journey in its pursuit. See you at the Club, Wally

But it doesn’t have to be this way! Let the Missouri Athletic Club make all of your holidays easy and memorable. Here’s a look at what the MAC has in store to make your holidays merry and bright this season: #1 Thanksgiving Brunch You don’t have to wait until Thursday to celebrate! Can Ladies Interclub Tennis Hold Their Winning Ways? By Kim Steinmetz, MAC Tennis Director
The Ladies Interclub fall/winter season has been underway for a month, and our “B” team is holding at just over .500 with our “A” team just under .500. We stand in the middle of the pack – up or down, that’s where we can go. So, let’s be inspired by the summer A team, coming off their summer championship victory. How did they do it? Depth and determination. Led by Coach Scott Stutz, they were strong on top and throughout – five times they won big by winning all of their doubles matches. When they didn’t win, they played close. Lopsided victories and scoring points even in losing are what will make our teams rise through the ranks this season. Our MAC players are always tough, and this summer, they pulled their forces together, came out of the blocks fast and finished strong. With Susan Bruce (8-2) and Tracy Blix (5-2) leading the team on court one throughout much of the summer, the entire team played strong. Of their 11 matches, the team won all their doubles sets five times, including the final two weeks of the season, to clinch their position at #1! Depth in the team was also one of the factors for their success. While Natalie Hoffman (8-3) and Colleen

Sommer (5-2) helped hold court two on a winning course, the doubles team of Jennifer Griesedieck (8-1) and Debbie Schmitt (9-2) were almost unbeatable on court three. All of the players contributed greatly to keeping the team on top, and more than 90% of them had winning records. Congratulations Ladies! And good luck to our fall/winter team – play well! Sports Personality of the Year in the Cards for Carpenter The 44th Annual MAC Jack Buck Sports Awards – Dec. 11
The second base position was a question heading into the 2013 season. Could a valuable utility infielder that had never been an everyday player in the big leagues, or a starting second baseman at any level, become an everyday player at his new position? Matt Carpenter of the St. Louis Cardinals answered the question with a resounding yes by playing excellent defense, emerging as the top leadoff hitter in the game and becoming an MVP candidate. Carpenter’s breakout season has earned him the 2013 Missouri Athletic Club’s Sports Personality of the Year award. You know it has been a special season when you break one of Stan Musial’s records. Carpenter set the franchise record for most doubles in a season by a lefthanded hitter. He also led major league baseball in hits, runs, doubles and multi-hit games. Carpenter, along with a distinguished group of local figures, will be honored at the upcoming 44th annual MAC Jack Buck Sports Awards. Saint Louis University basketball

Beat Workout Boredom
Many members join the MAC for the Platinum-level service. Nowhere is this more evident than in the personal training offered at the two Fitness Centers. One of nine (l to r) MAC personal trainer Keisha Burns experienced with long-time client Frank Niesen Jr. MAC personal trainers, Keisha Burns is dedicated to helping members stay healthy and reach their fitness goals. She has been training and leading classes at the Downtown Clubhouse for more than 12 years. In addition to a degree in sports management, she holds personal training certification from the American Council on Exercise. But what really sets her apart is her enthusiasm and ability to motivate her clients. “She never has a bad day,” says Frank Niesen, Jr. “She’s always positive and encouraging.” Frank should know, as he’s been training with Keisha for the past eight years. In addition to a weekly personal training session, he attends up to eight of Keisha’s group classes each week. He says the individual session offers an opportunity to try new things, keeping workouts fresh and interesting. “Frank is my guinea pig,” Keisha jokes. Frank agrees, adding, “We keep what works and throw out what doesn’t.” By really getting to know her clients, Keisha ensures each workout helps them meet their unique goals. The MAC offers a variety of training options, including 1-hour sessions for $50, half-hour sessions for $32.50, new client specials and reduced group rates. To book a training session with Keisha, you can contact her directly at 314-539-4495.

Research Shows Massage Enhances Recovery/Performance By Mark Friedman BS, Massage Therapist, West Clubhouse
A new article in Fitness RX, written by Michael J. Rudolph, Ph.D., a doctor in biochemistry and molecular biology, focuses on how athletes can benefit from increased blood flow, reduced muscle soreness and decreased cortisol, all of which can be helped by massage. Greater Performance Massage, considered by some as a “lavish procedure primarily used for relaxation,” is coming to be known as a treatment to improve athletic performance. Dr. Rudolph states, “One of the more interesting ways that massage has been shown to enhance athletic performance is by generating greater blood flow by decreasing the rigidity within blood vessels.” This decrease also comes with an increase in nitrite and nitrate in the blood, precursors to nitric oxide (NO) which, “ought to enhance performance by supplying a much greater amount of oxygen and essential nutrients to working muscles, while simultaneously removing metabolic waste.” Decrease in Stress Hormone, Cortisol One way massage relaxes is by reducing production of the stress chemical cortisol, but that’s not the end of the story. Cortisol has the ability to, “transform the body from an anabolic muscle-building state to a catabolic, muscledepleting state.” You don’t have to have a Ph.D. to realize that a “muscle depleting state” is not desirable when working out. The average decrease in cortisol after massage is an amazing 31%.
Less Sore, More Energy Massage reduces pain in damaged muscles in two ways – by decreasing production of Substance P, a pain messenger in the body, and by reducing the inflammatory response. In a study, subjects exercised their quadriceps to exhaustion. Afterwards, one leg was massaged. Data from before
and after showed the massaged leg had a dampened inflammatory response that also, “likely reduced swelling and pain associated with weightlifting.” There’s a somewhat delayed reaction your body has to exercise. Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) commonly occurs 24-72 hours after intense exercise, and it’s more than just an annoyance. According to Dr. Rudoph, “Consequences of DOMS are prolonged loss of muscle strength, soreness and swelling, decreased range of motion and diminished performance,” changes that may increase your risk of injury. Studies have shown and Dr. Rudolph supports their conclusions that massage is one of the more effective treatments commonly used to alleviate DOMS by increasing local blood flow and decreasing swelling and pain.” One study followed subjects after doing high intensity bicep curls. Three hours later, one arm was massaged for 10 minutes. Massaged biceps were less swollen and sore, but perhaps more importantly, blood from the massaged arm showed considerably fewer markers for muscle damage. What This Means for You A proven treatment for quicker recovery, reduced pain and greater workout results is just a phone call away with Massage Therapy at the MAC. Oh, and it also feels great! Massage appointments may be scheduled at the West and Downtown Clubhouses. (Be sure to check out West’s new convenient massage room located between the Men’s and Women’s locker room, and stop by the Pro Shop for a locker key to borrow a plush robe before your massage.) MAC’s Hospitality Hero
New Sales Manager
Debbie Masters, Front Desk/Night Manager on Duty at the MAC, was recently honored by the St. Louis Convention and Visitors Commission as one of the 2013 Hospitality Heroes, a program designed to recognize exceptional service among the area’s hospitality industry employees. Debbie certainly fits that definition, having served MAC’s members and guests for more than 32 years. She received the recognition at a ceremony in September attended by St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay, County Executive Charlie Dooley and members of the St. Louis hospitality and tourism industries.
Jaime Britt recently joined the staff of the Missouri Athletic Club as sales manager, focusing on group sales for rooms and catering. She comes to the MAC with 13 years of experience in the hospitality industry, most recently as Corporate Group Sales Manager for the Renaissance St. Louis Airport Hotel. “The MAC is a special place with a unique history,” Jaime says. “I am looking forward to attracting additional business to the Club – it is such a wonderful place with so much to offer.”

Honoring Our Nation’s Veterans
Harry Hope 2013 MAC Honored Veteran of the Year
On Thursday, Nov. 7, the MAC will honor those who have served our country during our annual Veteran’s Day commemoration. The special day will include military exhibits, a performance by the USAF Band of Mid-America and presentation by featured speaker General Paul J. Selva, Commander, Air Mobility Command Scott Air Force Base. In addition, the MAC will recognize the 2013 Honored Veteran of the Year Harry Hope, selected for his ongoing commitment and service to the veteran community. Hope spent 38 years in the military, joining the Navy on his 16th birthday in 1947. He spent 10 years in the U.S. Marines and was involved in the landing at Inchon and the re-taking of Seoul in Korea. Serving with the 1st Marine Division, he was at the Chosin Reservoir where he developed frostbite in the 40 below temperatures. He later became a member of the Air Force Reserves, receiving several Letters of Commendation, and joined the Air National Guard as a First Sergeant, where he remained until his retirement in 1991. His dedication to the military did not end with retirement though. Hope currently serves as Vice Commandant
of the St. Louis Chapter of the Korean War Veterans Association, and in 2011, received the organization’s award for “Long, tireless effort and dedicated service to all Veterans.” He also serves as President of the Chosin Few Gateway Chapter, an office held since 2007. In 2009, he helped raise $25,000 for development of a “Chosin Few” memorial in Forest Park, speaking to more than 57 veterans groups. In 2011, he received the International Humanity Award from the Red Cross Overseas Association and became Chairman of the Greater St. Louis Honor Flight Program. Today, Hope remains an active member of the 1st Marine Division Association, the VFW, the American Legion, the Retired Enlisted Association, and the St. Louis Chapter of the POW/MIA Organization. In addition to his work with the Honor
Flight Program, he routinely attends troop deployments and welcomes home returning troops at Lambert Airport. He is tireless in his work to honor military servicemen and women, their families and veterans. There is still time to join us for this special event to honor Harry Hope and all our nation’s veterans. Also, don’t forget to visit the MAC Honor Roll on the website for a complete list of our Club’s veterans. (Membership > MAC Honor Roll). Parking Garage Update: On all Sunday Rams home games, members who want to use the Downtown Clubhouse but are not going to the game can park in the MAC garage and pay normal hourly rates as long as they exit the garage by one hour after kickoff. Here’s how it works: 1) Upon entering the garage, identify yourself as using the MAC but not going to the game. 2) Sign a chit, which will have the event fee noted, and take your parking ticket. 3) You will have until one hour after kickoff to exit the garage and pay normal hourly rates. If you exit more than one hour after kickoff, you will be charged the posted event fee. New Staff Member: The Cherry Diamond recently added Becky Rasmussen to its staff as managing editor and communications coordinator. Becky has more than 10 years of communications and publications experience, most recently serving as assistant director for a national trade association. The lucky winners – Harold and Joyce Kalde, Bill and Sandy Bouchein and Matt and Susan Adams – had the opportunity to redeem their prize on Oct. 5. What a dinner it was! Prepared by Chefs Cicardi and Susan, the evening began with appetizers followed by an excellent Caesar salad. Next came a pan-seared Genoan tilapia with light wine sauce with olives and capers. If that wasn’t enough, the main course was Florentine chicken spedini stuffed with spinach dressing and provel cheese, served on a bed of fettuccine Alfredo with green peas and accompanied by asparagus. This was followed by the dolce of the evening – chocolate spaghetti in a silver champagne cup, topped with vanilla ice cream, fresh blueberries and strawberries and hot fudge. Both guests and hosts had a wonderful time, and all three couples said they’re ready to bid on the dinner for next year!

MAC Champions are those members who go above and beyond to fill the three Buckets (Membership, Rooms and Catering) and help the MAC prosper. He also serves on the Associate Members Advisory Board. How do you recruit new members? I’ve recruited several new members – my approach is sharing with them the access and camaraderie of the Club. How do you use the overnight guest rooms? I book speakers and clients, when in town, at the Club.

Artist Of The Month - Harry Weber Harry Weber is this month’s featured artist in the MAC Art Gallery at the Downtown Clubhouse. Most of the drawings in this exhibit were done in Vietnam, while Weber served there on river patrol boats in 1966-67. The impressions of Korea and Desert Storm were done at the request of a veteran’s organization in Alabama and are on display at the Military Museum on the U.S.S. Alabama. Weber is well-known for his sculptures, of which more than 100 have been installed across the country and abroad. In St. Louis, he is best known for the 10 action figures of St. Louis Hall of Fame baseball players outside of Busch Stadium, the statue of Dred and Harriet Scott near the Old Courthouse and the Lewis and Clark statue just south of the Eads Bridge.

On your November member statement you will notice a voluntary contribution charge in the amount of $100 that will be allocated as follows: $ 90 MAC Employee Holiday Fund $ 2 MAC Preservation Foundation (tax deductible) $ 2 MAC Foundation for the Arts (tax deductible) $ 2 MAC Sports Foundation (tax deductible) $ 2 MAC Charitable Society for Children (tax deductible) $ 2 MAC Heritage Society Enclosed with your member statement is a form you can use to adjust any of the above amounts, if desired. In other words, all of these contributions are voluntary. In the past, the Employee Holiday Fund appeal was always sent out in the fall of each year and the various foundation solicitations were sent out periodically during the year. This annual bundling of contributions saves time and resources for both our members and the Club’s accounting staff by consolidating everything into one easy package. We believe this approach is a convenient and efficient way for members to thank our employees for their service and support the club’s charitable entities at the same time. Each of our charitable entities (MAC Preservation Foundation, MAC Sports Foundation, MAC Foundation
Members Only

for the Arts and MAC Charitable Society for Children) was created to address special goals of your Club and to assure that your gifts to them are tax deductible for federal and state income tax purposes. From time to time, you receive communications and/or visits from fellow MAC members soliciting your contributions to these entities. Generally, those solicitations request gifts of “significant” amounts. What you may not know is that in order to receive those significant contributions and retain their charitable exempt status, each of our foundations also needs to receive a large number of “significant” contributions in “insignificant” amounts (e.g., less than $10 per gift) in order to keep the IRS from meddling in their affairs. An illustration of the implementation of this “public support” tax rule you see all the time is the solicitation by utilities and newspapers that ask you to add a dollar or two to your monthly bill for charitable purposes. Your Board of Governors has determined that a similar approach is appropriate to the “care and feeding” of its charitable entities. Thanks for your support. It is very much appreciated. - MAC Board of Governors
