President’s Column
President’s Column President John Bugh
Last month, I stayed at the Minneapolis Club while on a business trip. The club is welllocated in the central business district and their clubhouse is more than 100 years old, so very similar to the MAC. I mention this for a couple of reasons. First, it is a great benefit of MAC membership to have the opportunity to experience Club life at nearly 100 clubs all around the country (and a few outside the country). But mainly, I now appreciate that the “grass isn’t always greener.” I know sometimes I’m guilty of this, but it’s easy to lose appreciation for what we have at the MAC. We have a rich history that dates back to the 1904 World’s Fair, two spectacular and diverse locations, a dedicated staff of loyal employees, “Platinum Club” status, and of course, 2,300 members who make the MAC special in so many ways. I enjoyed my visit to the Minneapolis Club, but it felt good to come back home to the Missouri Athletic Club. I’m happy to report that the club’s membership continues to increase. Our Membership Co-Chairs, Governors Troy Robertson and Dean Eggerding, have done an excellent job – and their hard work has paid off. The Club’s fiscal year ended
Aug. 30, and the Club increased its membership last year after several years of membership decline. But the real stars in this success story are each of you who have referred a member to the MAC. Thanks to everyone who has participated in our Platinum Partnership Program – and you are each being rewarded with reduced dues. The Club Within the Club (CWC) in the spotlight this month is the Mark Twain Society led by Carl Winters. The Mark Twain Society offers opportunities several times a year for members to meet, socialize and dine in a relaxed atmosphere while enjoying a cocktail, hors d’oeuvres and perhaps dinner. The group recently hosted a fantastic Whisky (Wild Turkey/Russell Reserve) Tasting. They have another outstanding event featuring Heaven Hill Distilleries on Oct. 24. You can contact Carl Winters at cwinters@mihmarketing.com for more information about the Mark Twain Society. Our Finance Committee, chaired by Governor John Salter, with the help of GM Wally Smith and his team recently completed the 2014 budget. Special thanks to the Club’s CFO, Larry Absheer, and Accounting Manager Pam Roth for all of their

hard work in the budget process. Look for much more on our 2014 budget and our 2013 financial results in next month’s column. The Rams are preparing to kick off the regular season. The back door of the MAC is about 100 yards from the front door of the Edward Jones Dome. You can’t beat the convenience on game day. There will be a lot of great times ahead at the pre-game tailgate parties on the Broadway parking lot and some delicious dining served inside the Clubhouse. At West, just because the kids are back in school doesn’t mean the family fun is coming to an end. I am looking to bring my crew to some great upcoming events including Family Fun Day, Oktoberfest and the annual Trunk-R-Treat. Make your calendar for a special night at the Club on Friday, Nov. 15. We will celebrate the MAC at the 110th Anniversary Ball. This black-tie event will feature a threecourse dinner, lavish hors d’oeuvres and dancing to the music of the Blue Knights. All of the elements that have helped make the MAC a St. Louis institution will be on full display, including the most important one … camaraderie. The MAC has thrived for more than a century because of the relationships. Don’t miss the party of the year as we toast the grand Missouri Athletic Club. I will see you around the Club! We are the Official Soc What’s just 100 yards away from all the action and excitement of NFL football? Whether you have season tickets or just want to take part in the tailgating action, the MAC Downtown Clubhouse is the place to be before and after each home Rams game. With tailgate parties, the best football buffet in town, convenient garage parking and affordable accommodations – all just steps away from the Edward Jones Dome – the MAC is also the perfect place to bring your family, friends and guests. On Aug. 17, we kicked the season off right with a tailgate party before the pre-season Rams game against the Green Bay Packers. The Packers defeated the Rams in a final score of 19-7, but as you can see, plenty of fun was still had at the MAC. As they head into regular season play starting Sept. 8, Rams fans look forward to cheering on some big wins under Head Coach Jeff Fisher, now in his second year with the team. Make plans to help us root for the home team, or your favorite team, this football season at the MAC.
Located just steps away from the Edwards Jones Dome, the MAC will make sure you’re always ready for some football.

General Manager
From the General Manager’s Desk Wally Smith
Dear Members: As we wind down our fiscal year, I’d like to toss out my thanks to all of you awesome MAC members. We finished our year on the positive side in many, many ways. Our membership rolls are up year over year, our rooms’ revenue is through the roof and our food and beverage revenue was up substantially. As you recall, we entered last year with no dues or fee increases scheduled and were focused on growing our “Membership, Rooms and Food and Beverage Buckets.” While athletics is our middle name, these three buckets are where we have the best financial opportunities, hence all the attention. And, hence all our successes. Thank you for all your support and for thinking of the MAC and our Buckets. As our new fiscal year begins Sept. 1, our focus really stays the same. Christmas parties are coming up, weddings are being booked and our rooms are filling up. Our Platinum Partnerships grow every day and are absolutely the best Club value in Missouri. If you don’t have your partner yet, let us help you. Call Patti or Julie in membership to get the entire scoop.
On another note, we just re-signed our agreement with The Legends Golf Club, which is under new ownership, and the golf course is in terrific condition. This arrangement brings us back to five top-level golf courses for your enjoyment. Why join a country club when you have the MAC? Speaking of golf, thank you to everyone who participated in our Preservation Foundation Golf Outing on Aug. 26. We sold out early and had a full field who all enjoyed the day as we raised a substantial amount of money for the preservation of our historic Downtown Clubhouse. A special thanks to Past President Scott Engelbrecht who chaired the event and worked hard pulling it all together. The funds generated are limited in their use to infrastructure and life safety issues downtown and have to be approved for expenditure through the Landmark Society and the Foundation’s Board of Directors. Both groups are great to work with and share a love for this old, very cool building. We have a number of projects lined up that I will share in greater detail next month as the year gets underway. Exciting stuff! Speaking of exciting, how
about those Rams. They’re the youngest team in the NFL, and Coach Fisher could not be more pumped for the season. We are “the official social club of the Rams” and are thrilled to have all their support and partnership. There will be a jamming Rams tailgate party in our parking lot prior to all home games this season. It is a must for you fans prior to the games; we’ll have lots of options for eating and drinking, bands playing and people tailgating galore. Consider it your “Landing Spot.” And before I run out of room here, congrats to our Pelican Swim Team, which came in third in Conference, and to our Pelican Dive Team, which came in second in Conference. With all this success and fun we can’t stop splashing, so this fall we have MAC Head Swim Coach Lauren Fonseca and her staff instructing small group swim lessons on Saturday mornings Oct. 5 through Nov. 9 (6 weeks) at the Downtown Clubhouse pool for ages 4-15. Look for details and don’t forget to come out west for Family Fun Day, another “Landing Spot” event on Sept. 7. We have so much going on, and you getting plugged in and having some MAC fun is your fall mission. See you at the Club, Wally
