Members Hold the Key to MAC’s Success By: Bob Hagnauer, Membership Committee Chairman

T

he most consistent and significant message that has been conveyed to every MAC member over the last six months is the importance of recruiting new members. Without a stable membership base to support it, the club’s financial health is placed under increasing stress. Despite the hard work of the staff in the Membership Office, and the response of many members to the “Each One, Reach One” recruiting program, our recruiting results and overall membership headcount continue to decline. For the first six months of the current fiscal year, we have recruited 25% fewer new members than during the same time period last year. Combine this with an increase in member resignations, and we have lost over a hundred more members than we have recruited over the last six months. This continued erosion of our membership headcount is a trend which we must reverse if we are to improve the club’s financial

4

APRIL 2011

condition and continue to offer the great MAC services, amenities and experience that we all expect. Over the last six months, 172 members, less than 7% of our nearly 2,500 members, have submitted the names of 224 prospective members. These have so far produced 68 new member enrollments. No matter how you slice it, the numbers paint a very clear picture. If more members don’t help us, there is no way we will be able to recruit enough new members to offset the resignations. The MAC exists to serve the members, but during this time of increased challenges, the club must call on every one of its members to pitch in and help us reverse the downward membership trend. You can help by giving the name of a prospective member to Patti or Julie in the Membership Office. If every member gave the name of just one prospective new member each year, our condition would look very different. For our new member recruitment efforts to succeed, far more than 7% of our members must stand up and help. The call is clear, and the keys to our success are in your hands.

If you would like to refer a new member, please contact Patti Cundiff (Downtown) in the Membership Office at 314-539-4429 or Julie Kueper (West) at 314-539-4408.

very time you sponsor a new member you get one months free dues PLUS entry in a quarterly drawing to win three months free dues, and entry in the grand David McCoy finale drawing to win one year free dues. Dave McCoy has won four months free dues for sponsoring new member Chris Sorenson. Sponsor a new member and YOU TOO could be a big winner. The next quarterly drawing is on May 12, at the Town Hall Meeting at the Downtown Clubhouse. The meeting will be at 6 p.m. in the Veterans Room.

ast month, the Board voted on the officers for 2010-11. Tom Albus was elected the 96th president of the MAC. The other officers elected: Justin Fowler, first vice-president; Bob Hagnauer, second vice-president; Don Stork, secretary; and John Kingston, treasurer. I have enjoyed working with them on the Board the past two years. This is a strong group that will provide the Club outstanding leadership. They will take office next month. Also in May, the membership will vote five new governors onto the Board to join the senior and junior classes. Please review the bios of the candidates which are published in this month’s Cherry Diamond and plan on being at the Club on Thursday, May 5, to experience the excitement of the MAC election. Due to the recent passage of a By-law amendment, you have to be there in person to vote (except for absentee voting). This change should increase the interaction and camaraderie by Club members on election day. If you have never been at the Downtown Clubhouse for the election, I encourage you to attend this year. Stick around that evening for a complimentary dinner and for the announcement of the winners. A week after the election, on May 12, the annual business meeting will be held at the Downtown Clubhouse. You are invited to attend to discuss current issues related to the MAC and the Club’s Board of Governors. We will also be holding one of our quarterly Town Hall meetings at this time. We need to continue to shine the light on the importance of membership recruiting. With pool season and all of the other great summer activities right around

the corner, this is the ideal time to pass along your prospective member leads to the Membership Department. If you have not provided at least one lead yet, please do so. We need everybody to pull together. The proceeds from the Cherry Diamond Gala Auction have already been put to use. New athletic equipment has been ordered for both clubhouses and members will begin to enjoy using it this spring. Everybody who attended and helped coordinate the auction should take pride in the fact that their participation helped provide something that greatly enhances our Club. It was my pleasure to attend the annual Employee Service Awards Dinner on March 10. This tradition began many years to ago to honor the accomplishments of our employees from the past year. It was remarkable to see the number of people with perfect attendance and the impressive number of employees who have many years of service at the Club. We are truly blessed to have such a loyal and diligent group of employees. Their dedication and loyalty to the MAC help make this Club a special place. Winter is over and the baseball season is here! Make sure you stop by the Jack Buck Grille before or after Cardinals games for a cold beverage and a bite to eat. There are a lot of outstanding events to look forward to this spring. Make sure you stay connected to what is going on at your Club. In addition to the Cherry Diamond, there are number of other communications outlets like the website, signs, the Member Guide Book, weekly e-newsletters, daily e-mail promotions, Facebook and Twitter to

help you plan your social schedule. The Spring Dinner Dance, Easter dining, the Apollos concert, Mother’s Day Brunch and the Father/Daughter Banquet are just a few of the upcoming events to look forward to in the coming months. Spring is also a good time to consider joining a Club within the Club. Check out the list of CWCs on the website. There is sure to be one group that meets and shares one of your areas of interest. These groups plan some unique events and offer members the chance to meet other members. Summer may seem like it is still a ways off, but now is the time to make plans for your kids. The West Clubhouse has a great youth summer sports program. The Sports Camp and various clinics will keep your children active and entertained. See you around the Club!

Activities and Associations: President, Illinois State Bar Association,’08-‘09; Board of Governors ISBA, ‘00-‘10; Chairman, ISBA Unauthorized Practice of Law Committee; Member, Judicial Evaluation Committee Outside Cook County;

Member, Illinois Bar Foundation; Director, Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation; Director, Urban League Metropolitan St. Louis; President, St. Clair County Bar Association, ‘86-‘87; President, East St. Louis Bar Association, ‘85-‘86; Member, American Bar Association; Member, Colorado Bar Association; Member, Missouri Bar Association; Member, Illinois Trial Lawyers Association Qualifications The Missouri Athletic Club has been a valuable resource to me and my family. All three of my children participated in the Saturday morning programs offered by the M.A.C. We attended the Father/Son and Father/Daughter banquets until it became not cool to be seen with Dad at social events. As a Board member I would seek to develop a consensus regarding Club policies. Further, I would want every member of the Missouri Athletic Club to believe his or her dues were wisely spent on both the maintenance and improvement of our physical facilities. In addition, I would want our members to conclude the Board hires and retains the best personnel to not only implement board policies but also to serve the members. I have served on numerous not-for-profit boards. Most significantly, I served as President of the Illinois State Bar Association, a voluntarily bar association of nearly 35,000 members. In addition, I serve on the boards of the Land of Lincoln Legal Assistance Foundation, and I currently serve on two condominium boards where I own properties. Working with these groups has given me an appreciation for a board member’s responsibility to them, their financial wellbeing, and their standing and reputation in the community. We all work very hard, but we also realize that there is more to our lives than our jobs. More than 10 years ago when we joined the MAC, the MAC created a significant balance between our jobs and our family life. We will always be appreciative for the opportunity the MAC has afforded us. And, I am also very honored to have been nominated to be a candidate for this most prestigious Board of Governors. If I am fortunate to be elected, increasing membership and guaranteeing the same quality of services that exists today at the MAC will be my two most important priorities. It is my firm belief that through the Clubs within the Club, the increased momentum of the MAC Charitable Foundation and the MAC Preservation Foundation, along with the overwhelming enthusiasm of the current members, the MAC will forever remain one of the top private clubs in America. I also believe my work experience will be a valuable asset for the MAC. I handle global legal matters and key initiatives for Peabody, as well as manage people. Member of St. Louis Civil War Round Table and past board member for 6 years Board member of Friends of Fort Davidson for 8 years Qualifications I love this Club. I am a second generation and a twenty one year member. I can only hope that one of my children can make it a third generation. It has been a joy to use the Club for many family events and holidays through the years. The future of this Club evolves around acquiring a sound membership. It is a goal of mine to promote young members to become more active in the leadership of the Club. I have been a strong believer in the Club Within a Club program. It does much to promote and maintain membership. These programs need to be developed to the fullest potential. I have always been considered a people person. This along with my 35 plus years of business experiences hopefully has prepared me to be a Governor. I would sincerely like to serve the Club. If elected, I will do so with integrity and dedication. Over the past decade the club has consistently provided me with great business and networking opportunities, serious athletic competition, and most importantly lasting friendships. I am indebted to so many past governors and presidents for helping to create the tradition that makes our club so special. I am eager to build upon the groundwork that has been laid by these strong leaders, and I welcome the challenge to reach an untapped group of new members willing to cooperate with and enrich our organization. I believe my enthusiasm and leadership skills would be true assets to the board. I look forward to pouring my energies into furthering our goals, increasing our membership, and contributing to our community. Its no secret that private clubs all across the country are facing tough economic times. For several years I have wanted to give back to the MAC as a Governor, but never threw my hat in the ring. Until now. Recently, my father in law William Cribbin, a 45+ year member, passed away. His passing has inspired me to finally step up, in honor of his memory and contributions, to instill and share the comradery, fellowship and competition the MAC instilled in my family and which I hope every member feels. I know I will be a dedicated and productive Governor. I believe in honoring tradition, in being measured by actions. Through my governorship I will work to make the MAC a club where every member feels ownership, excitement and pride, a club we enjoy with our children, our spouse and our friends, a club that is a community standout and leader. My governorship goals to you are to serve my fellow members by building on the MAC traditions and legacy, improving our “brand,” creating a larger community footprint and guiding core improvements while being mindful of the need to create value in spirit as well as in product. Food, Fun and Friendship on the Fifth Floor Annual Good Fellowship Day Party Downtown

M

embers, both old and new, turned out in force to celebrate camaraderie and commitment to athletics at the annual Good Fellowship Day party at the Downtown Clubhouse. A variety of athletic competitions were held, followed by a delicious lunch buffet in the Sportsman’s Club, complete with all the cold beer members could drink. On the courts, the Club’s basketball players put on an exhibition game. Squash and handball players also competed in doubles matches. Governor Joel Karsten won the 3-point contest. He tied with two other members, Larry Drury and Daniel Clinard in the first round with all three hitting 6 of 10 shots. Joel won in the second round by again hitting 6 of 10 shots. Rob Wunderlich and John Reichert were the big winners in the rowing competition. Winner of the Closest-to-the-Pin Competition was Charlie Martin, son of member Jerry Martin. His shot landed 8-feet from the pin. Members also participated in free fitness classes including Spinning, Hard-Body Yoga, Boot Camp and Core Class. Whether members were competing, working up a sweat or just cheering from the sidelines, everyone had a great afternoon at the MAC.

igh School Nationals was a huge success held here at the MAC. Thank you to the members. Over 400 kids participated from 22 different high schools. The winner of the girls division, Cor Jesu, was coached by Matt Buck, nephew of MAC West General Manager Dave Miller. SLUH won the boys division. The overall champ went to Sprague High School. Former MAC member Larry DeVuono from St. Joseph’s Academy won coach of the year. Our own Tuesday Night League Playoffs took place March 1, with League Champion Barry McClure taking on Eric Simon. They played two games to 11 with total points determining the winner. Eric’s speed outlasted Barry’s craftiness. It was a great match to watch with both players taking turns having a chance to win. Our next league just got started and is open to all. Please come out and give it a try.

The Class of 2011 Inducted Into MAC Hall of Fame

T

he MAC recently inducted some of its most distinguished athletes into the Club’s Athletic Hall of Fame. A dinner was held in their honor in the Missouri Room. The Hall of Fame Committee reviewed nominations and selected a strong 2011 class of inductees. The new members of the Hall of Fame are Jim Goessling (Basketball), Tim Engelmeyer (Racquet Sports), and Carmelo Natoli (Distinguished Service). The 1999 MAC basketball team, which captured the national tournament in Chicago, also entered the Hall of Fame. Ethan Oetter, who learned squash at the Club as a child and went on to become a standout on the team at Yale, received the “Dan Barks Award.” The Athletic Hall of Fame was established in 1993 to honor those members of the MAC who distinguished themselves in the field or in the development of athletics at the Club. Portraits of each Hall of Famer are on permanent display in the Sportsman’s Club.

ell done to Reed Whitney who won the Dayton Junior Open at the end of February. Reed is 15 playing in the U/17’s. He won four matches to win the event and played exceptionally well. Congratulations Reed! We just finished holding the Missouri State Singles Titles. Our club finished with two winners. Nick Sansone won the D division, and John Farrell won the C division. Well done guys!! The Hall of Fame Banquet was held at the start of March where Ethan Oetter was awarded the Dan Barks award. And even though it was for racquetball, Tim Engelmeyer (who plays squash almost everyday) was inducted into the Hall of Fame. Ethan and Tim had a great showing of supporters with about 20 squash members attending to help them celebrate. Everyone had a great night.

Congratulations Ethan and Tim! The Gold Junior Nationals are being held at Yale this weekend. Reed Whitney, Blake Briscoe and Julia Olson are all participating. Good luck guys!

Youth Learn to Swim Clinic Makes a Splash

T

he popularity of the youth swimming clinic brought it back for its sixth year this winter. This year’s clinic was formatted to help beginning swimmers learn the basics of the pool. The six-week workshop focused on helping swimmers age 4-8 become comfortable with the water and learn floating and breathing techniques. Swimmers practiced putting their faces in the water and kicking on their fronts and backs. The enthusiastic swimmers were met each week by an equally energetic group of instructors who encouraged the swimmers throughout the sessions. This summer there will be many more fish in the MAC West pool thanks to the progress made at the clinics. Be sure to watch for details about next year’s clinic in the Cherry Diamond and Buffet.

Artist of the Month

T

his month’s featured artist in the MAC Gallery is Daven Anderson. He is a watercolorist who describes himself as an ‘urban realist,’ painting life as he sees it on the city’s streets. Anderson is essentially a self-taught artist having spent only one year in an evening open painting session at the American Academy of Art in Chicago. A long-time Chicagoan and now a fouryear St. Louisan, Anderson is fascinated by urban life. He alternates his urban subject matter between foreign and other urban settings and those of St. Louis. Walking the streets with his camera he constantly searches for images that capture his imagination. If you are interested in purchasing any of Daven Anderson’s pieces, please contact Linda Van de Riet at 314-539-4448.

ark your calendar now for the Rod and Gun Club Good Friday Trout Fishing outing on Friday, April 22. Do not miss this great opportunity for a one-day trout fishing outing, which ends with a fresh catch feast. The whistle will go off at Maramec Spring Park at 7 a.m. on April 22. The group will depart from the commuter lot across from Quik Trip at Highway 44 & 109 at 5 a.m. Leaving bright and early will allow for transportation, getting fishing tags at the park and getting positioned in the stream. The group will fish for a few hours, catch the limit and then tour the fish hatcheries and other sites around the park. Everyone will depart St. James around 11 a.m. The group will arrive at MAC West by 1 p.m. to shower and steam. Lunch and cocktails will be at 1:30 p.m.

with plenty of fishing stories to last the afternoon. Chef Mathew Unger at West is very familiar in preparing the fish and does an incredible job. The cost is $16.95 for an all-inclusive lunch. Maramec Springs is roughly 95 miles away in Phelps County, eight miles from St. James. Originally the site of the first successful ironworks west of the Mississippi, Maramec is today an exceptionally beautiful spring. It stocks mostly Missouri strain rainbow trout, though there are some brown trout swimming about. For reservations for fishing and/or lunch, call Sarah Asinger at 314-593-4490 or sasinger@mac-stl.org.

Did You Know? Trout can be found in easily recognizable narrow areas in cool lakes, rivers and streams where fast, rapidly moving water meets slow, and where deep water meets shallow. They can also be found where rocks and rock shelves offer tranquil relief from the current. Rainbow trout feed in faster water that runs approximately six feet per second. Other species of trout feed in slower waters where water runs approximately one foot per second.

MAC Staff Spotlight Food and Beverage Sportsman’s Club and Banquet Managers

W

hen you dine at the Club for lunch or host a special catered event, you expect delicious food, exceptional service and an overall pleasant experience. A trio of friendly, longtime employees make your dining experience their number one priority each day. Betty Hines, Connie Hogan and Pam Evans ensure you receive nothing short of the best when you are at the MAC. With a combined 70 years of experience in the Food and Beverage department at the Club, you know you are in good hands with these three. All three women started as servers, so they know every aspect of the Sportsman’s Club and banquets. Betty and Connie are most likely the first people to greet you when you arrive at the Sportsman’s Club. Whether you are there for breakfast or lunch, Betty and Connie always welcome you and your guests with their infectious smiles and positive attitudes. Between the two of them, they ensure you are seated promptly, your food is served on time and the quality is always superb. After working at the Club for 34 years, the MAC feels like family to Betty. She began serving at the Club after moving back to St. Louis from California to care for her mother. She had experience serving and the hours were tremendous.

Servers rarely had a day off because the Club was so busy. After many years as a server, Betty was promoted to Sportsman’s Club manager. Her main responsibilities include making sure the dining room is operating correctly, seeing that food goes out on time, handling private dining events in the Sportsman’s Club and most importantly, ensuring members are happy.

“I am happy they choose to come to the Club because they could go anywhere else, but they choose here,” -Betty Hines Betty prides herself in the care she provides to members. “I am happy they choose to come to the Club because they could go anywhere else, but they choose here,” Betty said. She said if she doesn’t think something is the best it can be, she won’t send it out for a member. The care and attention Betty provides to members have developed into friendships with many of the members. “They are like family,” she said. “A lot have sort of adopted me and my family, and I really appreciate all they’ve done for me.” The close relationship Betty has built with diners in the Sportsman’s Club is give and take. While she takes care of the members in the Club, several of the members have looked after her and her family outside the MAC. When Betty had her open heart surgery, a member offered up the name of a surgeon. Members filled her room with cards and flowers wishing her a speedy recovery. Bernie Mabry in particular really looked after Betty and her family. “He came

to my son’s high school graduation to take pictures for our family,” Betty said. The members have always appreciated all that Betty does for them, and she appreciates all they do for her too. Connie has worked at the MAC for 10 years. After starting as a server, she now holds the position of Dining Room Supervisor. Connie is responsible for making sure the Sportsman’s Club is set up and ready each day for members. She also monitors the kitchen to make sure food is coming out on time and everything is running smoothly. Connie says it is her pleasure to serve members and their guests. “You don’t have to ‘want’ for anything here,” she said. “We make sure you are taken care of.” She says the MAC is a home away from home for both her and the members. “Many members wish they could get the wonderful service we provide at home,” Connie said. Pam Evans also first began her career as a server at the MAC. After a short break away from the Club raising her children, Pam returned as the Banquet Manager. She is responsible for scheduling servers, working with each department to ensure everything is set for the banquets, setting up meeting and banquet rooms and checking in “I’ve grown up with some of the members. with members to see that their event is set up properly and that they have everything they need. She checks in with the member throughout their event and is always flexible to make sure the member’s and their guest’s experience is the best. “I hope members and guests enjoy the MAC,” Pam said. “This is the place they wanted to be, so I want to make sure they were taken care of when they were here.” The MAC is like family to Pam. “I’ve grown up with some of the members. It really is like family.” The quality service, hard work and positive attitudes of Betty, Connie and Pam will make your experience at the MAC a pleasant one, and not just this time, but every time you visit.

Delta Gamma Center for Visual Impairments

W

hen faced with the challenge of a child with visual impairments, many parents do not know where to turn. In St. Louis, the Delta Gamma Center for Visual Impairments is a supportive resource for families affected by vision problems. The Delta Gamma Center for Visual Impairment is one of the three benefiting charities of the MAC Charitable Society for Children. Delta Gamma Center was founded in 1951 by a group of Delta Gamma alumni from Washington University as a way to serve the needs of St. Louis youth with visual impairments and blindness. The organization’s mission is to help children who are blind or visually impaired reach their full potential through family-centered and specialized services and support. Children from birth up to high school graduates receive services from Delta Gamma Center. Three different services are offered to families through Delta Gamma. The first is home and center based educational and therapy services for children up to 36 months. Teachers focus on training parents to work with their children throughout the day since parents are the primary teachers during the early years. In-home services focus on helping children adapt to the environment and teaching them visual skills. Delta Gamma also offers family support and community awareness services. Family support services serve as a way to help family members understand children’s growth and development. Delta Gamma Center offers many annual events for families of blind and visually impaired children such as a day at the

Magic House, a trip to the pumpkin farm, ice skating and a family holiday party with Santa. Delta Gamma Center also has GRADS groups (Group Recreational and Developmental Support) for school age children to help them socialize and participate in leisure activities. Delta Gamma Center works hard to promote community understanding of visual impairments. The organization offers vision screenings at area preschools. All MAC contributions support the early intervention services for infants and toddlers and their families. “It is a critical service, serving as a lifeline for families when they receive the news that their baby is blind or visually impaired,” said Debbie Naucke, Executive Director at Delta Gamma Center. Delta Gamma Center would like to say thank you on behalf of the board and families for such dedicated support of the families from the MAC membership. “You are helping to provide more services and improved community awareness of the Delta Gamma Center,” said Naucke. If you would like to contribute to the MAC Charitable Society for Children, visit the CSC website at mac-stl.org. There is a donation form available. One-time donations are accepted as well as monthly donations that can be taken from your member account.

Starting in 1947, the FatherDaughter banquet has been one of the most popular events the Club puts on each year. The tradition of the Father-Daughter Banquet continues this year at the Downtown Clubhouse on Wednesday, May 18. Fathers, daughters, grandfathers and granddaughters are all
