his month, I come to you from the squash courts of our West Clubhouse where I am getting ready for an early morning round robin of singles. Dan Fusz, Pete Fusz, Tony Cancila, Chris Michalek and Chris Shepperd are all on tap for some tough matches. As I walked into the West Clubhouse this morning, I could see the holidays are definitely in the air as the decorations are being brought out of their boxes gearing up for the upcoming festivities. I hope you all enjoy the coming holiday season and remember the Club is a traditional gathering destination for friends and family. I encourage you to experience this special time of year at your Club. Throughout December, the social calendar is filled with a number of wonderful holiday events at both Clubhouses culminating with the New Year’s Eve Ball to usher in 2008. This holiday season, members have shown their generosity by contributing to the Employee Holiday Fund. There is still time to send in your check if you have not done so already. On December 12th, the Club is proud to host the premier sports banquet in town; the 38th annual Jack Buck Sports Awards. Jason Isringhausen, Chase Daniel and John Davidson are among the featured sports personalities who will be in attendance along with emcee Scott Engelbrecht. I am kidding! Our emcee, as always, will be Joe Buck who always does a fantastic job. The Board continues to work very hard in membership recruitment, facilities management and enhanced member services. These areas are always a critical and challenging part of our operations. We need everyone’s participation. If you have ideas for improvement or change, please don’t hesitate to share it with a Board member or member of the management team. Remember, this is our Club. Membership recruitment is the lifeline of our Club. We need each one of you to participate in this area by referring a member to our membership staff. A membership to the Club is truly a one of a kind experience which allows the recipient to enjoy not only improved health from our athletic facilities but also enriches one’s life through the many business and social experiences the Club has to offer. The MAC has had a wonderful experience
this year and though membership has remained steady, I invite each and every member to give some serious thought to friends, coworkers and business associates to whom they would like to sponsor as a prospective member to the MAC. In the upcoming months, the Club will be embarking on a membership referral program which we are all very excited about. This referral program will include a phone bank, which will have members calling members about the possibility of prospective members. By keeping our membership strong, it allows the Club to not only keep the monthly dues structure in line, but also helps to improve the services and amenities to even greater levels than we have in years past. You will be receiving a letter asking for three referrals in the mail later this month, so its not too early to consider who you would like to introduce to our great Club. I thank Dr. James Beattie, Gary Gaertner, Lester Crancer, Terry Williams, Kurt Mungenast, Cliff Kurrus, John Reichert, Jim Dankenbring and Gary Sextro (to name a few) who referred new members to our Club this past month; THANKS. We have a lot of things being worked on around the Club, which is costing significant dollars. Our facilities require tremendous upkeep. You will see some date announcements in my next column inviting each of you to “Member Town Hall” meetings. The intent of these meetings will be to inform each attendee about the improvements going on in the Club; primarily in facilities management. Any question is fair game. Congratulations to my good friend, Past President, and current Club General Counsel Tom O’ Toole, Jr., for his recent appointment to the Executive Committee of the United State Golf Association. One of, if not, the most influential governing body in golf throughout the world. Way to go T-Ball. Well, Dan and Pete have shown up for their thrashing on the squash courts, I’ve got to go. Past MAC New Year's Celebrations The MAC is home to one the longest running and most glamorous New Year’s Eve parties in St. Louis. Celebrate a piece of the city’s history while celebrating the New Year. • The first New Year’s Eve party was held in 1920. They had to turn hundreds away because of the number of reservations. • In 1924, over 600 members attended the annual New Year’s Eve party and danced until 4 a.m. • In 1944 and 1945 the MAC’s New Year’s celebrations were part of a national coast-to-coast hookup of on-the-air NBC broadcasts courtesy of Radio Station KSD. • Beginning in 1953, the New Year’s celebration was telecast on KSDTV, a telecast which continued for more than a decade.

ardinals pitcher Jason Isringhausen has pulled out a lot of close victories during his major league career, and he pulled out another one in winning the Missouri Athletic Club’s Sports Personality of the Year Award. In voting by MAC members, Izzy won one of the closest votes in the history of the award. In 2007, the Brighton, Ill. native bounced back from an injury-plagued 2006 season to have one of the best seasons of his career. Isringhausen converted 32 of 34 save opportunities, which was good for the best save rate in the National League. The Cardinals closer is the alltime saves leader in team history. Don’t miss the Missouri Athletic Club’s 38th annual Jack Buck Sports Awards Banquet on Wednesday, Dec. 12, when Izzy receives the Sports Personality of the Year Award. Former Cardinals closer and current team broadcaster, Al Hrabosky will present the award. Isringhausen becomes the 14th Cardinal to win the Sports Personality of the Year Award, joining the ranks of players like Bob Gibson (1970), Lou Brock (1973), John Davidson Keith Hernandez
(1979), Whitey Herzog (1982), Ozzie Smith (1984), Tony LaRussa (1996) and Albert Pujols (2002). University of Missouri quarterback Chase Daniel will be in attenJoe Buck dance to accept the Carl O. Bauer Award, which is presented to the top amateur sports figure. Daniel leads one of the most explosive offenses in college football. He is a semifinalist for the Davey O’Brien Award, which is presented to the top quarterback in America. Mizzou head coach Gary Pinkel is scheduled to present the award to his talented, young quarterback. Daniel is the 4th Missouri Tigers football player to win the Bauer Award, joining Kellen Winslow (1978), Phil Bradley (1980) and Brad Smith (2005). St. Louis Blues President John Davidson will receive the Jack Buck Award, which is presented to an individual in recognition of the enthusiastic and dedicated support of sports in St. Louis. Since assuming his position in 2006, he has been instrumental in helping to turn the franchise around. Behind Davidson’s leadership, the Blues have reconnected
with fans as attendance is on the upswing. On the ice, the team has brought in head coach Andy Murray and added all-star Paul Kariya. Ron Jacober will receive the Burnes/ Broeg Award in recognition of years of promoting St. Louis through sports. The recently retired Sports Director of KMOX Radio covered the St. Louis sports scene for 38 years. The award winning broadcaster has covered Super Bowls, World Series, Stanley Cups and Final Fours among other sports events. Karl Heger will receive the first-ever Dan Barks Award. Named for the longtime MAC Athletic Director, this award honors an athlete who grew up at the MAC before going on to athletic success. Earlier this year Karl, son of MAC member Fred Heger, was inducted into the USA Gymnastics Hall of Fame. Make reservations now for this celebration of St. Louis sports before it sells out. Since Jack Buck helped establish the event in 1970, the MAC has been home to the best sports banquet in St. Louis. Joe Buck, the premier sportscaster in America, will be the master of ceremonies and the banquet will be carried live on KMOX Radio. Focus on Fitness Launch into Fitness
I
f you are tiring of the same old workout routine, try mixing things up by taking the newest fitness class offered at the Downtown Clubhouse, Launch. This class is an excellent way to burn fat and tone muscle. The 60-minute class consists of endurance, fat burning and muscle conditioning aspects. The class is offered on Monday evenings at 5:30 p.m. and is taught by instructor Cynthia Weisz. Each Monday the class activities will vary. Some may include plyometrics, weights, abdominal training, agility exercises, running and stair work. The class is for total body conditioning and also works on stability, coordination and agility. new personal trainer is now available Downtown to help you get back into shape or maintain your current form. Trent Switzer has over 10 years of experience in personal training of people of all ages, including seniors. Switzer is an AFAA Certified Personal Trainer (Aerobics and Fitness Association of America) and Group Exercise Instructor. His educational background is in health and physical education from the University of Missouri. There are many benefits to personal training. First, a personal trainer educates you about equipment and exercises to prevent injury. Also, a trainer creates accountability. You can’t just skip out on a scheduled appointment. he MAC’s popular children’s swimming clinic is returning for its 3rd year. Last year, nearly 60 kids enrolled in the free six-week workshop. The clinic is designed for kids from first to eighth grade who already know the basics of swimming, but want to focus on improving their skills. Instructor Richard Nix and his staff will provide teaching that mirrors the philosophy of former Athletic Director Carl Bauer’s approach to swim coaching. The goal is to help achieve good
technique in all four strokes: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and the butterfly stroke. The focus will be on swimming quality, not endurance. The stroke techniques will be broken down during drills and focused training. Classes will be held at the Downtown Clubhouse on Sundays, from 2 to 3 p.m. The six-week session will start on Jan. 6 and conclude Feb. 10. The clinic is free, but space is limited. Catch Soccer’s Shooting Stars The MAC Hermann Trophy will be Presented to College Soccer’s Best on Jan. 11

junction with college soccer’s Final Four weekend. This year, the event returns to the MAC where the announcement of the winners will air live on national television through an ESPNews broadcast. The MAC has been home to college soccer’s version of the Heisman Trophy since 1986. Over the years, some of the biggest names in American soccer have come to the Club to claim the prestigious crystal soccer ball trophy, which is presented annually to the top male and female collegiate soccer players in the United States. The trophy represents the highest individual achievement in the sport. The jerseys of the past winners like Mia Hamm, Kristine Lilly, Claudio Reyna and Alexi Lalas are on permanent display in the Sportsman’s Club. All Division I soccer coaches will get to vote for the award in A press conference announcing the winners of the MAC December. The top three male Hermann Trophy is broadcast live on ESPNews. t. Louis is regarded as the soccer capital of the United States, so it is only fitting that the Missouri Athletic Club is home to the top individual honor in the sport. Artist of the Month – Tom Dailey
T
om Dailey is the Missouri Athletic Club’s featured artist for December. His work will be on display throughout the month in the Gallery located in the Downtown Clubhouse. Dailey says his work is inspired by the modern and post modern art movements. Working in abstract expressionism, he interprets the world through details of color, line and texture. “My mission is to paint with inspiration using a variety of experimental approaches to express my creativity and my true artistic voice,” says Dailey. Dailey’s development as an artist has taken many turns. He was prolific at times, but he was working without much purpose. Then at age 40, Dailey began a serious quest to find his “artistic voice.” Now, Dailey says he owes many thanks to teachers, friends and guides who helped him arrive at a place where he could have his voice heard. AC employees donated portions of their paychecks to the MAC Charitable Society during the month of October. The final donations have been counted and a grand total has been reached. The employees donated a total of $3,702! This is an almost $1,000 increase from last year’s donations. The money donated by the employees will be added to money donated by members. The total amount donated will be divided equally among the three charities chosen by the Charitable Society for 2007. The three charities are Dream for a Day, Places for People and Foster and Adoptive Care Coalition. Show your support for the charitable society and three great local charities. You can donate in several ways. You can make a one time donation or you can join the charitable society and donate a set amount each month. This is the third in a series highlighting the Clubs Within the Club (CWC) at the MAC. Each month, the Cherry Diamond will give you a bit of insight behind one of these groups to share their history and achievements. This month we’ll take to the skies and highlight a CWC that has really taken off, The Aviation Club.
T
he Aviation Club has not been in flight long, but the CWC has done a lot in the three years since it formed. With around 25 members, they are always on the go flying to different airports to tour planes and the latest equipment. This CWC is perfect if you have any interest in flying or are just interested in how planes are put together. The Aviation Club members are always up on the newest developments in aviation technology and often travel to see these technologies demonstrated. Gloria Bahn, Aviation Club chairwoman, said that while some members of the club are pilots, many are aviation enthusiasts, retired military servicemen and their spouses. The field trips they plan appeal to all. The Aviation Club is a very hands on CWC, meaning they don’t just hold meetings; their meetings are mostly field trips. In the past, they have toured factories where parts are made,
toured new premiere jets, hosted speakers talking about cockpit design and the use of gps technology. One of the best trips the CWC has taken was to the Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio. They were given a tour by museum director Major General Charles Metcalf. They got to walk through the presidential aircraft utilized by President Truman, President Eisenhower and President Kennedy. They also saw exhibits of aircrafts from WWI and WWII. The Aviation Club meets quarterly on the third Tuesday of the month. They are in the process of setting up a speaker for their next meeting. This month we have had a few events. The McDonald/Mabry Pro/Am Doubles tournament was held Downtown the end of November. This event was well attended with as many as 12 teams signing up to duke it out for the glory. Some proceeds from this event will go to the MAC Junior Squash Fund. I thank you all for your support of this event on the newly renovated doubles court Downtown. I must thank Chuck Mueller and all the maintenance staff for all their hard work in re-painting the court and placing in the lovely glass gallery so doubles can be watched by
everyone. Thanks guys! Also, I took a group of Juniors down to the Ohio Invitational event in November with some good results. There were 6 Juniors (4 girls, 2 boys) with the standouts being Blake Briscoe who won the Boys U/15 Consolation draw and Annabelle Cella who was 3rd in the girls U/13. Blake was also a finalist in the Cleveland Junior Open Boys U/15 event last week. It is good to see the kids program developing and if any of you would like some information on the kids programs, please email me. The Turkey Tournament will be completed by the time you read this, so I will let you know the results next month and who won the Turkey this year, along with the winners of the Squash vs. Racquetball Tourney. Holiday Eating and Exercise Tips
H
ow many times have you heard about the inevitable weight gain you will have during the holiday season? A little planning and common sense approaches can go a long way in your effort to prevent the holiday weight gain. Don’t wait until New Year’s day to take care of you health. Start now and reap the rewards even sooner. Make it a holiday, not a holi-month. Enjoy the holidays, but don’t extend them to February. If you want to eat a certain food during the holidays, go ahead, just don’t over indulge all at once or over the course of several weeks. Don’t cook several meals worth of food, try to limit leftovers especially for high fat, sugar and calorie foods. Turkey, on the other hand, could be part of a healthy diet on a daily basis. I encourage you to keep in mind how much better you feel when you eat healthy foods than when you have been eating too many foods that should be eaten only sometimes.
Set yourself up to succeed at parties offering food and drinks by eating some healthy foods prior to the party and by limiting alcohol, not only due to the calories alcohol provides, but because of its effect on your inhibitions and self control. Don’t be afraid to fill up on healthy items such as fresh fruits and raw vegetables. This will displace some of your desire for sometime foods and provide you with health promoting nutrients. Because of travel and other time consuming demands, cutting back on your regular exercise routine may be unavoidable during the holiday season. If you have less time to exercise, you will have to increase the intensity of your exercise routine for the shorter bouts to maintain caloric expenditure levels. This will require you to be aggressive with your workouts and utilize various

Keep Your Kids Active this Holiday Season

et your kids out of the house, and let them enjoy a day filled with sports without braving the cold weather. MAC West is offering two holiday sports and cheer camps to keep your little ones busy while they are on winter vacation. They will learn skills such as catching, throwing, dribbling and passing, and they will participate in mini games of baseball, basketball, football and soccer. Future cheerleaders will have a chance to learn some moves and cheers. Anyone is welcome to sign up. Moms and dads, this is your perfect chance to do those post-holiday returns and get the house back in order from the festivities. The camp will be on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, Dec. 26 – Jan. 4. Your child can choose to participate in the morning session from 9 a.m. to noon, the afternoon session from 1 to 4 p.m. or the all-day session from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., which includes lunch. The morning and afternoon sessions costs $65 for members and $85 for non-members. The all-day session is $120 for members and $140 for non-members. Through the Years 1958 More than a hundred youngsters from the MAC boys’ classes celebrated at a Christmas Party in the Crystal Room on Dec. 13. They had a gym-swim session followed by a luncheon where awards were presented. Boys were also treated to a musical performance and a color movie.

1968 Passports of the MAC Society were stamped “Londontown” when they journeyed to merry old England to open the Christmas holiday season at the annual Christmas party. The theme was Londontown because the Club was featuring an around-the-world adventure for Club events. The Club was decorated for an Old English Christmas accented in red and green.

History 1978 Members braved the cold winter temperatures to escape the winter blues by attending the Christmas Dinner Dance at the Club on Dec. 16. Over 500 members and guests filled the ballroom to enjoy hors d’oeuvres and mingling with friends. The evening was topped off with dancing and seasonal favorite tunes by Jack Engler and his orchestra.

Premier Designs is affordable (from $29 to $110), so you’ll be sure to pick up a few things to share the holiday cheer with

T
he Missouri Athletic Club and the Rotary Club of St. Louis teamed up for a Veterans Day celebration. The posting of colors, an exhibit of military memorabilia and the music of the MOANG Strike Eagle Brass Quintet highlighted the event. David Unterwagner, who has worked for the United States Department of Veterans Affairs for 33 years, was the featured speaker. He was recently appointed the Director of the St. Louis VA Regional Office. Unterwagner shared his experiences of the men and women he has encountered in the VA who have made tremendous sacrifices. The event concluded with the band playing rousing renditions of the songs from each branch of the military.
