lthough we are in the heart of winter, now is not the time to hibernate. There are too many great events to look forward to here at the MAC to stay cooped up at home. Leading the way is the Cherry Diamond Gala Dinner and Auction. There is a lot of excitement around the Club about this event. Many members have told me how much they are looking forward to this evening. If you have not had a chance to look at the amazing items our members have donated, I encourage you to go www.mac-stl.org and take a look. The event is fast approaching on Saturday, Feb. 5, and limited space remains, so make reservations now by calling 314- 539-4470. Enjoy a delicious dinner and bid on some unique auction items while supporting the important effort to raise funds to purchase new fitness equipment for both clubhouses and support our MAC Charities. With Valentine’s Day around the corner, make the MAC your destination for a memorable evening. The Valentine’s Ball at the Downtown Clubhouse is always a special night of dining and dancing. If you prefer a romantic dinner, the restaurants at both clubhouses will be serving special menus for Valentine’s Day. Also, keep in mind that you can stop by the pro shops or Downtown front desk to pick up some great Valentine’s gifts. While the MAC has a well-earned reputation for celebrating special occasions in style, remember to take advantage of the excellent dining opportunities that are available every day. Whether you are looking for a quick buffet lunch, an elegant dinner with your spouse or a business meeting with clients, the Club has the venue to serve

your needs. There is plenty of athletic action to look forward to in the coming months. Boxing is back! The Missouri Room was packed with fight fans in November, and the Club is preparing to host some of the top local amateur boxers again on March 11. Athletic has always been the middle name of the MAC. The Club has celebrated athletic excellence for more than a century. On March 5, some of our most distinguished athletes will be inducted into the MAC Athletic Hall of Fame. Congratulations to the HOF Class of 2011: Tim Engelmeyer, Jim Goessling, Carmelo Natoli, Ethan Oetter and the 1999 basketball team. On Feb. 26, make plans to attend a Club tradition that dates back to the 1930s, the annual Good Fellowship Day Party. Hosted by the Downtown Athletic Department, perhaps no event captures the spirit and camaraderie of the MAC like this event. Enjoy a day of food, fun and friendship on the fifth floor. Following athletic activities in the morning, the beer will be flowing and a delicious feast will be offered in the Sportsman’s Club. All of this fun is served up for free! The Club has several effective fitness classes to help you stay in shape and keep those New Year’s resolutions. Pages 14 and 15 of this month’s magazine spotlight some of the classes, including some unique new ones. Give one a try. Many improvements have been made to the women’s locker room at the Downtown Clubhouse and more will continue in the coming weeks. I encourage the ladies to check-out the exciting up-grades. The “Each One, Reach One”

membership recruiting program continues. Many members have already earned free dues through this year-long initiative, including Gary Gaertner Jr. who is highlighted on page 4. Gary was the first member to recruit three new members, and as a result, he has earned six months of free dues. You can start earning free dues too, just turn in your leads to the Membership Department. You will also notice on a bar graph on page 4 that tracks the monthly results of the Each One Reach One program. We will continue to share that information with you in the coming months. When we first launched the “Each One, Reach One” program back in the fall, I mentioned that the Club would host quarterly Town Hall meetings to provide updates regarding the membership state of the Club. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 9, at MAC West. The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. This is part of the Club’s ongoing effort to communicate about the state of the Club’s membership and to keep the focus on membership recruitment. Stay warm this winter and remain active -- see you at the Club!

MAC Good Fellowship Day A tradition of Club Spirit and Camaraderie

W

ith “Athletic” as the Club’s middle name, it’s no wonder one of the MAC’s oldest and most popular traditions centers around the fifth floor. Since the 1930s members have gathered for a day of friendly competitions in basketball, swimming and other popular activities at the Good Fellowship Day party. This year will be no different when members will get together at the Downtown Clubhouse for a day of food, fun and friendship on Saturday, Feb. 26. The MAC’s Good Fellowship Day started as the Hall of Health’s Year End Jamboree in the 1930s. Carl Bauer, longtime athletic director, started the outings in the 20s. The outings would draw crowds of seven to eight hundred members outdoors for swimming, sunning and swigging. The location of the Hall of Health gatherings changed three times over the years, but they were always complete with ample amounts of food, sports and beer. They were discontinued in the 1960s, but the Good Fellowship Day party has survived the times. Some of the featured activities in the early days of the Hall of Health outings and Good Fellowship Day included badminton, volleyball and swimming. In 1939, squash had gained

such popularity at the Club that it was added to the program. It was not uncommon for exhibition games to be played against other Clubs. In 1949, the MAC volleyball team defeated the Des Moines YMCA, and in 1951 the Club’s all-stars defeated the nation’s volleyball champions from Chicago. The athletic prowess of MAC athletes was always proudly showcased. Today’s events still feature swimming, but also include rowing, golf and basketball. An emphasis has also been placed on the healthy lifestyles most members attain by adding free fitness classes members can try. Even if a member is not an athlete, they are still encouraged to come down and squeeze in a workout before enjoying a free lunch.

Tennis Playing Strategies By: Kim Steinmetz, MAC Tennis Pro

G

o into a match with a game-plan. The plan does not need to be intricate. It starts with knowing your own game including your strengths and weaknesses. Maybe you will see yourself in one of the following: STYLE 1. I hate making errors. I like to stay back, to be consistent and wait for my opponent(s) to make errors. 2. I like to hit the ball hard from the baseline and force errors. 3. I like to come in sometimes and put pressure on my opponent(s). 4. I like to come to the net as often as possible. STRENGTHS 1. I have a particularly strong stroke (i.e. forehand, backhand, serve). 2. I move well. 3. I have good ball placement (i.e. down-the-line, lob, angle). 4. I poach well. WEAKNESSES 1. I have a particularly weak stroke (i.e. forehand, backhand, serve). 2. I do not move well. 3. I do not like to come to the net. With the above in mind, your initial game plan is to use your favorite style most of the time, put yourself in a position to use your strengths, and to avoid situations that highlight your weaknesses. Your secondary game plan is to analyze your opponent(s) and figure out their strengths and weaknesses and to play accordingly. Let’s say, for example, you like to play the net yet you feel your overhead is a little weak. When you play, you can come to the net often, but you may not want to close in too quickly or too far. You will find less lobs come your way if you stand 3 feet back from where you would normally play at the net. You also may realize, as you play, that your opponent has not lob yet! You are in luck! Change your strategy and play closer to the net and be more aggressive and see what happens. Keep adjusting your game as you play. When players are strategizing, a tennis match can be as mentally challenging as a chess match!

Downtown Women’s Locker Room Renovations Near Completion

T

he Downtown Women’s Locker Room renovations have made significant progress towards completion. The locker room is now more comfortable and relaxing for you to enjoy pre-or post-workout. In January, the front two bathrooms were completed. The new bathrooms feature updated fixtures, shower curtains, tile and hardware. In addition to the updated bathrooms, the main locker room area has new changing room

curtains. A marble vanity has also been added for you too utilize for make-up application. A flat screen TV has also been installed. The Club’s staff is working hard to finish the remaining renovations, which include the other two bathrooms. The improvements have made the women’s locker room a much more enjoyable environment for female members. Jennifer Stoehr works out at the

Downtown Clubhouse five mornings a week. She uses the 7th floor locker room to get ready in the morning after her workouts. She finds that the improvements really enhance the overall environment for female members of the MAC that use the downtown facility. “The downtown athletic facilities have a lot to offer,” said Stoehr. “The indoor lap pool comes immediately to mind. Further, there are great group fitness classes taught by excellent instructors. The nice part is now female members are able to begin and end their workouts in a locker room that is new and relaxing.” Before heading home from the office or during your lunch break, stop in and workout Downtown and enjoy the new and improved women’s locker room facilities.

Just take a look at the auction offerings at the mac-stl. org website to see the generosity and enthusiasm of our members. This event is a great example of our Club identifying a need, thinking creatively to meet that need and then executing a plan in a way that is elegant and fun. Three weeks later, February 26, 2011, is the Good Fellowship Party for members Downtown. This tradition dates back decades to Athletic Director Carl Bauer. There are basketball games, athletic contests, a squash round robin among other sporting events, plus a great annual sale in the pro shop and free lunch and beer. What more needs to be said? If you have never been to Good Fellowship Day, please come. If you

MAC Staff Spotlight Housekeeping Supervisor

A

s you place your napkin onto your lap when you sit down for lunch in the Sportsman’s Club or before you lay your head down on your pillow when staying overnight at the MAC, you probably don’t realize the behind-the-scenes work that has gone into making your experience at the Club a positive one. A hardworking team of employees work diligently around the clock to prepare the Club for you. The Housekeeping team, led by Housekeeping Supervisor Victoria Jenkins, handles everything from laundry to cleaning. Victoria has worked at the MAC for 14 years. She started as a room keeper and was eventually promoted to valet attendant and then to housekeeping supervisor. Victoria manages a staff of 12 employees that cover a wide range of jobs throughout the Club. Working under Victoria are the Club’s laundry attendants, housemen, room keepers, washers and valet attendants.

Victoria is responsible for various different areas of the Downtown Clubhouse. Not only does she oversee her employees to ensure they are providing the highest quality service, many times she also pitches in to help. “I enjoy being able to work beside my staff to help them make each member have a positive experience at the Club,” said Victoria. The Housekeeping department is responsible for preparing all of the Club’s linens, cleaning the Clubhouse from top to bottom, providing members with dry cleaning services and cleaning overnight guest rooms. Throughout the day she is constantly making her rounds from floor to floor ensuring everything is clean and ready. “I inspect each of the overnight guest rooms checking that they are ready for guests to check in,” said Victoria. “I also make sure the linens for private events are cleaned and set up in each room.” Victoria also monitors the Club’s linen supplies. When towels or sheets start to become worn, she meets with Food and Beverage Director Joe Dietz to order new linens. Most members do not see the Housekeeping department in action each day, but you come in contact with their work in every aspect of the Club. These men and women work tirelessly to provide you with the best experience when you are at the MAC. Next time

you grab a towel after a workout on the treadmill or put on your freshly pressed shirt, remember the crew of MAC employees who have worked hard to enhance your membership experience.

his month’s featured artist in the MAC Gallery is James Tuttle. James aims to portray the earth, sky and high water in the world after the flood, the way it was in the days of Noah. According to anthropological studies, the flood legends play a universal theme in cultures around the world. Tuttle’s Rainbow World art series features an ongoing commitment to designer art. He has painted for many years as a trained, tailored and selfimproved artist. If you are interested in purchasing any of Tuttle’s work, contact Linda Van de Riet at 314-539-4448.

Run for the Board

T

he Missouri Athletic Club Nominating Committee is seeking 10 qualified candidates to run for the 2011 Club election. Don’t miss this rewarding chance to give back to the Club. If you are interested in running, please contact Linda Van de Riet at 314-539-4448 or lvanderiet@mac-stl.org. Nomination packets, complete with a photo, letter of intent and biography are due by 5 p.m., Monday, March 21, 2011. After receiving all applications, the Nominating Committee will narrow the field of candidates down to 10. These 10 people will appear on the ballot for the Club election on Thursday, May 5. The top five election winners will be announced at 8 p.m. on May 5, in the Missouri Room and will serve a three-year term

on the board. Not only is it a way to give back to the Club, but the experience is extremely rewarding. Being a Governor is fun. You get to attend and participate in many club events. You will also instantaneously make 14 new friends and meet 10 other new individuals in the two years to follow. Those who serve on the Board are extremely dedicated, hardworking individuals. In other words, they are great people to know. Running for the Board is also a great way to connect with other non-Board Missouri Athletic Club members. You will certainly gain notoriety within the Club, whether or not you win. In fact, running for the Board is half the fun. You will walk away having gained much more out of your membership. Between dinners and other special events, the

candidates develop a deep camaraderie that few ever forget. Whether you decide to run for the Board or not, make plans now to be at the Downtown Clubhouse on Election Day, May 5. Experience all of the excitement first hand with a walk through the famed Missouri Athletic Club gauntlet.

New Year’s Eve Ball Celebrates the Roaring 20’s in Style

T

he MAC once again hosted the most glamorous New Year’s Eve bash in town. Members and guests rang in the New Year with family and friends amid a packed Missouri Room. This year’s party theme was the roaring 20’s. Many took advantage of the fun theme by dressing the part with sharp tuxes, flapper dresses and festive headdresses. Party-goers began their night with lavish hors d’oeuvres and cocktails in the Art Lounge before settling in the Missouri Room for a delicious three-course dinner. The Bob Kuban Band provided entertainment for the evening. A champagne toast at midnight was the perfect closing to a grand evening at the MAC.
