President’s Column
President’s Column Fellow Memberss I write my first column for the Cherry Diamond, I am filled with many emotions. It is exciting to set out on my term as your President, humbling to follow so many prominent leaders of our club, and intimidating to try to guide such a large and complex organization. The most profound feeling, though, is gratitude. I owe many thanks to so many fine people. I would first like to thank my family, most especially my wife Alicia, for supporting my service on the Board of Governors. You will be reading a lot about my family this year because you have to know them to understand my point of view on many things and probably also because I am so proud of them, I won’t be able to help myself. Next, I hope you all join me in thanking outgoing President Chris Lawhorn, 1st Vice-President Ed Gilkerson, 2nd VicePresident Jim McMullin, Treasurer Jim Dankenbring and Secretary Richard Nix for their fine service. I have spent the last two years listening to their insight and witnessing their love of our Club. A special note of thanks to Chris Lawhorn, who was a friend when I joined the board and has become a dear friend to me during our service. He has been a bright, caring, levelheaded leader to us this past year. Please take a moment to thank these men when you see them at the Club. I am also grateful to the Board I have the privilege to lead for the 2011-2012 term. I particularly want to thank the newly elected Governors and those members who were candidates this past May 5. I was deeply impressed at the collegiality of the candidates, their enthusiastic campaigns and obvious passion for our club. Running for the Board of Governors is an unusual process during which mature, successful people “put it on the line” and have to publicly compete for a job, spending hours and hours of time on an endeavor that could result in failure. I admire the courage of all nine and look forward to working with all

nine in different ways this year. Finally, I am so grateful to the wonderful members and staff who have made this such a special place over the years and have left me with a gem to lead. From Marie Salter’s tireless work on the Cherry Diamond Gala to Pat Corich’s bright smile and wonderful photos of seemingly every club social event to Sam Hopmeier’s dedicated leadership of the Charitable Society, to hundreds of others, the club is a beehive of members supporting and enjoying their Club. Then, there is our awesome staff. They show up early and stay late. From Debbie and Lois greeting me with a smile at the front desk, to Connie and Betty welcoming me to lunch to Mark and Debbie with the perfect pour in the Jack Buck Grill, to all the behind the scenes people that keep the clubhouse clean, safe and in good repair, the staff is the heart of our club. I am not the richest man in town (far from it), but when I walk in the door of the Missouri Athletic Club, I feel like a million dollars. For me, it is a place for members to live life more fully. Our members can work out on beautiful courts of every kind, use the latest machines and receive expert instruction and motivation. Our members can dine on the finest food and drink to be found. Perhaps best of all, our members can enjoy deep, rich relationships at the Club. My membership has exposed me to so many wonderful people, business executives, entrepreneurs, judges, military officers and clergymen I otherwise would have never met. Our membership is our community at its best, and I hope in some small way to reflect that excellence during my term. This is wonderful time of year to be at our Club. For the Albus family, the focus of the MAC is now the pool. There is no better place to sweat out a St. Louis summer than enjoying the water, soaking up sun and sipping our famous smoothies. I hate to give up this secret, but try stopping by after work during the week, the pool is open until 9 p.m. and things have usually cleared out by dinnertime.

My sons will be heading out for Sports Camp at MAC West this summer and are eager to spend more time with Coach Eric Saxton, learn some racquet sports and see if they can remember my club number when they pass the snack bar. Check out the Spring/Summer activity guide to see all the offerings at both clubhouses for children and adults. If you are a golfer, be sure to enjoy access to our reciprocal private clubs. I have already played the beautiful St. Clair Country Club in Belleville, which is less than fifteen minutes from downtown and am looking forward to a June trip to Panther Creek C.C. in Springfield, Illinois on the MAC bus. Check out the growing MAC Golf Club for information on leagues, outings and other cool webbased tools that will soon be available to our members. Finally, if summer means bratwurst and beers for you like it does for me, be sure to make time for exercise. The proceeds of the Cherry Diamond Gala have been put to work at both clubhouses so come put these fancy machines to work and if you see Vice-President Fowler wandering around the Fifth Floor offer to explain how the machines work! My wish for you all is a year of health, happiness and peace. I promise to do my very best to give this Club the leadership its members deserve. Election Excitement
Bugh, Frontczak, Hammer, Hanses and Robertson Elected to the Board
T
he Missouri Athletic Club has many traditions, but election day is arguably the most unique. No private club in America holds an election quite like the MAC. From the gauntlet to a day of old-fashioned campaigning, Club spirit fills the Downtown clubhouse at the MAC election. On May 5, election festivities got rolling in the afternoon when enthusiastic campaign workers lined the voting gauntlet poised to persuade voters to choose their candidate. Later in the day members were treated to a complimentary dinner. The camaraderie and socializing culminated with the announcement of the winners at 8 p.m. Mary Frontczak, Troy Robertson, John Bugh, Terry Hammer and Judith Hanses. When the dust settled, MAC members elected five new governors to serve on the 15-member Board. Focus on Fitness
New Fitness Equipment Arrives
T
he proceeds from the first-ever Cherry Fitness Equipment Added: Diamond Gala Dinner and Auction have been Six Upright Bikes put to good use. New Free Motion cardio equipment Five Treadmills has been added at both the Downtown and West Four Elliptical Trainers Clubhouses to make your workouts more enjoyable Three Incline Trainers and effective. Equipment includes incline trainers, One Recumbent Bike treadmills, upright bikes, a recumbent bike and ellipticals. Precor elliptical machines have one of the highest reputations in the fitness industry for good reason. They pay particular attention to natural body movement and rhythm when developing items like Precor elliptical machines. The tag line, “Engineered to move the way you move,� indicates a lot about the philosophy behind their designs. The incline trainers are a new concept in the MAC athletic departments. The machines have the same functions as a treadmill, plus you can add a 30% incline for hiking and -3% decline. By using the incline trainer you can achieve over three times greater fat burn at 2 mph and 22% incline when compared to running at 6mph and 0% grade. You can also attain up to 100% muscle activation on the glutes and hamstring. In addition to the new equipment, the West cardio rooms have also been equipped with new flat screen TVs and a fresh coat of paint. With summer in full swing, now is a great time to recommit to an exercise plan. Stop in the Downtown or West Clubhouses and give the new equipment a try.

new session of Mat Pilates is starting at the Downtown Clubhouse on Wednesday, June 15. Classes are held at noon. Drop by during your lunch hour and get in a great workout. This exclusive floor workout will help you build a strong core and strong limbs. That Mat will work your powerhouse, back, legs and arms by using exercises that will help lengthen your muscles as they strengthen. Mat Pilates is an excellent workout for both men and women alike! It will improve your core strength, flexibility, coordination and muscle control.

rainer Christi Gleason will offer a new yoga class at MAC West on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 p.m. The session begins on June 8. Yoga is an effective way to help you rejuvenate and relax. It benefits people of all fitness abilities. Yoga assists to increase flexibility and strengthen you both mentally and physically.

Biggest Losers Win Big!
A
pril marked the end of the MAC’s Biggest Loser competition. A total of 19 members signed up to compete over 13 weeks. A total of 188.95 pounds were lost by everyone in the contest. While everyone was a winner in losing weight, there could only be one overall winner. This year’s winner is John Reichert. He lost 10.05% of his body weight to win the contest, which was a total of 22.6 pounds lost. For winning the contest, John received a weekend stay at the Lindenhoff Bed & Breakfast in Augusta, a day of bike rentals for two on the Katy Trail from Katy Trail Bike Rental in Defiance, dinner for two at Café Bella in Augusta, five 1hour personal training sessions at the MAC and five 1-hour massages at the MAC. Finishing 2nd was Kevin Cantwell. Kevin lost 9.52% of his body weight, which was 26 pounds lost. He received three 1hour personal training sessions at the MAC and three 1-hour massages at the MAC. Andrew helped run a one-day Racquetball Tournament. Jeff and I placed 2nd in the Open Division. We all had a great time, and Andrew did a fantastic job. Let’s get our Tuesday night group to head out next time and show these college kids a thing or two.

Our Tuesday Night League is going strong, and you will find good people and good competition while burning a few calories. About 1,000

he winners of the 2011 MAC Double Elimination Basketball Tournament was the team captained by Jack Raymond. They beat the team captained by Nick Bauer 43-42 in the Championship game. Pool Attendance: • The swimming pool is to be used by those members whose membership entitles outdoor use. All others memberships are restricted to their designated use only. • All members must sign in by the Pro Shop to be admitted into the pool area. • Members are entitled to bring guests into the pool. In order that we can control large crowds, please limit guest number to no more than four per visit. Guest fees are $12 per person. • Children under fourteen must have a parent or authorized guardian in attendance with them at the pool. • Any child with floaties, a life jacket, etc. must be “directly supervised” by the parents or authorized guardian. Parents or guardian must directly supervise any small child, regardless of swimming ability. Plastic or wooden paddles are prohibited at all times. • Water guns are not allowed in the pool. • Glass or any other sharp objects are prohibited on pool premises. • To help prevent potential neck and spinal injuries; diving is not allowed in the shallow end of the pool (less than 5 ft.) • Playing and hanging on the lane lines, steps or ladders is prohibited. • Baby/wading pool is for children six years old or younger. Children must be supervised in the baby pool at all times. There is no lifeguard on duty. • The lap lanes are reserved for individuals 18 or older who wish to swim laps. There is a 30-minute time limit when there are other members waiting to swim laps. Health Rules: • Children who are not potty trained are required to wear a swim diaper. These can be purchased in the Pro Shop. • Persons with open sores or infectious or contagious conditions are not allowed in the pool. • The pool may be closed due to maintenance, health conditions, weather or other purposes deemed necessary by MAC. The pool will be vacated during storms with lightning. All swimmers will be asked to enter the building area. No one will be allowed on the pool deck during this time. We will wait 30 minutes from the last strike of lightning and thereafter the sound of thunder before making a decision to resume swimming activities.

ummer ushers in a lot of good things to look forward to; and fresh produce and barbeques are near the top of the list. After a day at the pool or a round of golf, drop by the Stan Musial Grille for delicious and refreshing summer dining specials. West Herb Garden Grows
T
he West Clubhouse continues to use fresh herbs grown on the property in many dishes you are served. Chef Mathew Unger began growing herbs organically outside of the West kitchen several years ago. Last year was the first year the herbs grew. This year, the garden has continued to expand. Some of the herbs grown include: mint, lemon balm, cilantro, sage, garlic, chives, rosemary, basil, oregano, dill, thyme and lavender. Sunflowers are also grown to attract bees to pollinate the herbs. New to the garden this year are 12 varieties of heirloom tomatoes. All the herbs and tomatoes are picked fresh each day and served to you straight from the garden. Chef Unger continues to expand the garden because of the excellent quality. Growing organically at West also helps to keep costs down. There is a farm to table movement among St. Louis restaurants where chefs are developing relationships with farmers to get products direct from the farm. “We are taking the movement a step further by growing the products ourselves,” Chef Unger said. Taste the difference in the fresh grown herbs next time you dine at MAC West. The herbs will be available through December, and the tomatoes through August.

he Cardinals season is now in full swing. Make the MAC your pre- and post-game destination for every Cardinals home game. Stop in the Jack Buck Grill for food and beverages before and after the game. After filling up before the game, take the MAC shuttle to Busch Stadium. The shuttle will leave 35 and 15 minutes before game time. The MAC is also open for Sunday home games with transportation available. On Sunday home games, the Jack Buck Grill will be open for food and drinks at 11 a.m. The bar menu will be featured. he MAC Lunch and Tour Group are a friendly group with varied backgrounds and interests who come together once a month for the purpose of building friendships through meeting other MAC members, visiting St. Louis area sites and enjoying lunch together at St. Louis area restaurants. The Group meets September through June on various days to accommodate everyone’s busy schedules. Everyone is welcome to attend at any time. Events are typically planned one to three months in advance. Past events have included: Tour of the Denim Lofts with lunch at Lucas Park Grill, Missouri Botanical Garden

he MAC Charitable Society for Children has been supporting local children’s charities since 2005. Over the past six years, the CWC has supported over a dozen charities and raised tens of thousands of dollars. The hard work and dedication of the committee members and MAC members who contribute to the CSC have made a positive impact on the St. Louis community. In total, the Charitable Society for Children has donated $87,549.39 to 18 deserving local charities. Way to go CSC! The Charitable Society for Children continues to seek new members and donations. Each year, three new charities are selected as beneficiaries. If you are involved in a local children’s charity, nominate the organization to be a sponsored charity of the CSC. W
hen at the MAC, you can usually find George Schwartz patrolling the different floors of the Downtown Clubhouse. George is the Club’s Security Supervisor, and makes it his priority each day to help members and guests feel at home inside the MAC. The job is second nature to George, who retired as a Captain after a 25year career with the Police Department. Following his retirement, he went on to

work corporate security for several large companies. George also worked as a fraud investigator for Visa/MasterCard. Eventually, he began driving shuttle buses to various events and that’s how he became familiar with the MAC. At the time, the MAC did not have a shuttle, so George would drive a shuttle for members to various sporting events. The relationship he built with the Club led him to starting up and heading the Security Department at the MAC. That was 14 years ago. George has been leading his security team since then. George manages a team of two MAC security officers, Fred Nelson and Damain Shivers, and five contracted Whelan security guards. Fred has been with the Security Department for seven years, and Damain has been for four years. Prior to coming to the MAC, Damian was a deputy sheriff in Joplin. The Security Department is responsible for reviewing daily security tapes, taking actions on any reports submitted, patrolling the Club and parking garage at all times of the day and running and maintaining the MAC Shuttle. Fred, Damain and George all have Commercial B Class driver’s licenses, which allow them to drive the bus for MAC events. George is proud to report

that all drivers have perfect records without incident while driving the MAC shuttle. Besides just driving the shuttle, the Security Department also inspects the bus before each trip and services and cleans the bus. The MAC Shuttle has added a terrific value to MAC members. You can rent the bus for private events or take it to the Cardinals or Blues game. Another aspect of George’s position as Security Supervisor is executive protection. When dignitaries, politicians, athletes or celebrities visit the Club, George and his staff ensure that they are comfortable and have a positive experience at the MAC. George says the Security Department maintains a close relationship with the 4th District Police Department. Keeping members and guests secure while on the premises is the Security Department’s main responsibility. “We do our best to provide service and protection while on the MAC property,” George said. “If we can be of any assistance to you, please let us know.”

I cannot think of a more perfect setting for Mary and Carol Higgins Clark. Of course, your rooms are beautiful, the food was outstanding and plentiful, the coffee was hot and always available, and to top it all off, the service was excellent. Every employee we encountered at the MAC made us feel like their sole purpose that day was to make us happy -- and they did. In a few weeks, our Authors Brunch committee will hold a Lessons Learned review of the event where we look at everything about the entire process. If there is anything that comes up, positive or negative, about the MAC, we will be sure you are provided that feedback. So far, it’s all been good! Each time you provide a prospective member to the Membership Office and that prospective member joins the Club, you receive three months free dues! Now it is easier than ever to provide the Membership Department with leads. The New Member Referral Card for the Each One, Reach One program is now available on the MAC website and in the weekly e-communications. Next time you leave a business meeting or lunch with a friend who is interested in the Club, don’t wait till you can call the Membership Office or stop in one of the Clubhouses. Print out and fill out a lead card right away so you don’t forget. The Member Referral Card can be found under the Membership page on the MAC website. Click “Membership” on the top header. You will find a gray box on the left column that will provide you with the card. These specialty camps allow your child to focus on a particular sport they are interested in either to improve their skills or learn something totally new. Not only will these activities keep their brains active during summer vacation, but your children will stay healthy and in shape. The West Clubhouse offers children ages 5-18 the opportunity to sharpen their athletic skills through various camps. The Club’s summer clinics are led by expert instructors who have competed and coached at a high level. The following are the youth specialty sports camps. Camp MAC is the place to be during the summer. There are dozens of new and exciting activities for campers to participate in, so there is never a dull moment. Daily activities for campers age 5-12 include racquetball, soccer and tennis instruction with pros, free time in the pool and arts and crafts. This summer (June-Aug.) kids eat free on Saturday evenings at West from 5 to 9 p.m. A family meal is a great way to end the day and spend some quality time together. Children 12 and under eat for free off the kids menu when dining with a parent. This opportunity is available for one child per adult. For reservations, call 314-539-4441. • Summer Snackin at the Poolside Café. After an afternoon of lounging at the pool, a cold, refreshing drink and snack are usually in order. The MAC Poolside Café is conveniently located right inside the pool deck to help you quench your hunger and thirst. The Poolside Café is open Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Refreshing smoothies from the Poolside Café are the most popular item. Apollos Wish Upon a Star
T
he Apollos performed rousing renditions of Disney favorites at their annual spring concert. Following a delicious dinner and welcome from Apollos President David Pentland, MAC President Chris Lawhorn introduced the nine candidates running for the Board of Governors. After the candidate announcement, Apollos director Marc Strathman led the group through Disney favorites. Songs included: “Be Our Guest,” “When You Wish Upon a Star,” “You’ve Got a Friend in Me,” “Heigh-Ho,” “A Whole New World,” “Chim, Chim Cher-ee,” “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes,” plus a few more. Following the performance, members and guests enjoyed the afterglow.

nn Croghan is this month’s featured artist in the MAC Gallery. She received her undergraduate degree from the University of Missouri-St. Louis and earned a Masters of Fine Arts with an emphasis in painting and drawing from the University of Illinois- Champaign/ Urbana. Her work has received many awards and honors in local, regional, national, international juried and invitational exhibitions. Her artwork is also represented in many corporate and private collections. Ann has been an art instructor for over twenty years and currently teaches classes through St. Louis Community Colleges - Florissant Valley, Forest Park and Meramec. Why did you first join the MAC? “I joined to play squash. The MAC is one of the few places in St. Louis where you can play.” 2. How do you get the most out of the MAC? “I started just playing squash, but now I enjoy many features of the Club including social events and the weight rooms at the Downtown and West Clubhouses.” 3. What is your favorite MAC event? “The New Year’s Eve party was a great time.” 4. What is your favorite meal at the MAC? “I really enjoy the lunch buffet on the 4th floor Downtown.” 5. Do you participate in any fitness programs at the MAC? “I have taken the Kettle Bells class. I’d recommend members give the fitness classes a try because the MAC staff are well trained and professional.”
