Members Stay Informed at Town Hall Meeting By: Bob Hagnauer, Membership Committee Chairman On Feb. 9, the Board of Governors hosted the fifth in an ongoing series of quarterly Town Hall Meetings, which are meant to keep all members informed about important club business and to give members a regular opportunity to ask questions and to offer comments and suggestions. A large and attentive group of members attended to learn more about their Club. President Chris Lawhorn presented an overview of the club’s financial status and results from the first quarter of the new fiscal year. Not surprisingly, these results continue to reflect the strain placed on club finances by the country’s ongoing general economic conditions. Like every business and household, the MAC has felt the economic upheaval. Our revenues and income have been affected and show a decline from last year. Management, staff and the Board are working hard to reduce costs with minimal visible effect on member services or amenities, but as the economic challenges continue, it is becoming increasingly difficult to avoid visible cuts. As an example, it was recently decided to close the snack bar at West during times of lowest

activity and to ask members to place food, beverage, carryout, and ever-popular smoothie orders at the Stan Musial Grill during those times. While a difficult decision, this single adjustment to club operations will produce a savings of over $40,000 annually. At the same time, nonstop work goes on to improve the member experience and to increase revenues by improving existing services and by adding new ones. Examples of these efforts include new menu offerings at West and Downtown, new club events like the Cherry Diamond Gala Auction and new fitness classes at both Downtown and West. It is the club’s goal to continually search for ways to offer a great MAC experience to every family member. Much of the club’s financial challenge is a direct result of continued membership losses, which had increased dramatically in 2008 during the early stages of the economic downturn, but which have recently shown signs of slowing. While we are all encouraged by the recent slowing of our membership losses, declining at a decelerating rate is not a great business plan. To achieve long-term financial stability we need to get back to membership growth by recruiting more members than we lose each month. It is a simple fact that we cannot recruit the number of new members that we need without the active and

ongoing help of every member. If all 2,500 of our members actively help their club by acting as eyes and ears across the area and by giving leads on prospective members to Patti and Julie in the Membership Services Office, our monthly recruiting numbers would soon look much better, and our financial results would soon look much different. This is a call to action that every MAC member who is dedicated to the health and success of our club should eagerly heed. The current “Each One, Reach One” campaign is designed to encourage, simplify and reward members for submitting leads that turn in to new members. Many members have responded, and in just 3 months, 122 members have submitted 161 leads that have resulted in 54 new members. Following the presentations, many members asked questions and offered suggestions, and President Lawhorn promised attention and follow up on every item. The Town Hall meetings are an important and valuable opportunity for all members to stay informed about their club. The meetings will continue to be held every 3 months and will alternate between the Downtown and the West clubhouses. The next Town Hall will be held in conjunction with the Club’s annual business meeting on the evening of May 12, at the Downtown clubhouse.

efore we get rolling into March, I wanted to take a look back at a couple of events from February that truly captured MAC spirit and camaraderie. I want to celebrate the first MAC Cherry Diamond Gala Dinner and Auction. The event was an amazing night for all involved. A sold-out crowd of over 400 members and guests filled the Missouri Room for the inaugural event. The event generated more than $100,000. With these proceeds we look forward to making improvements to the athletic equipment at both clubhouses. A portion of the proceeds will also be used to benefit the MAC Charitable Society for Children and MAC Preservation Foundation. The entire MAC community pulled together to make this event a big success. Thanks to the auction sponsors, plus the members and friends of the MAC who generously donated a fantastic lineup of items. A special thanks to the Auction Committee members and staff for their tireless efforts, especially Katie Maurer, Marie Salter, Mary Lou Lenkman and my wife Tracy. Thanks to all who attended and bid on more than 150 items. It was a special night to remember at the MAC! In February, we also celebrated the annual Good Fellowship Party with new and long-time members alike at the Downtown Clubhouse for this Athletic Department celebration that dates back to the 1930s. This traditional event has been enjoyed by generations of MAC members. As I am writing this column, the sun is out and we finally have a break in the winter weather. As the snow and ice melt away, there is a lot to look forward to here at the MAC. Hopefully the groundhog was right and we can enjoy an early spring. That would be welcome news, especially for our Club’s golfers who are looking forward to hitting the links. In addition to the prospect of good weather, there is more good news for MAC golfers. WingHaven Country Club and Panther Creek Country Club in Springfield, Ill., are being added to the MAC golf lineup. Now you and your guests

will have access and privileges to six of the finest golf courses in the area. With so much variety, golfers will never get bored playing the same course over and over. These golf affiliations greatly enhance the value of a MAC membership. With two clubhouses and the ability to play golf at several private clubs, no club in St. Louis can match what our Club offers. We also have an active MAC Golf Club within the Club that hosts a league and numerous outings. Getting involved is a wonderful way to enjoy the sport with your fellow members. Soon you will be receiving in the mail the spring and summer edition of the Membership Guide and Program Book. It is packed with important details about athletics classes, programs and Club services offered at both clubhouses. The variety of what is available to our members is remarkable. It is another reminder of all the value that is packed into a MAC membership. I encourage you to use this valuable resource to help you and your family plan for a fun and active summer at the Club. There are some fantastic new dining options featured on page 10 and 11 of this month’s magazine. A visit to any MAC restaurant is always enjoyable. Also, please remember to keep the MAC in mind when planning a banquet, business meeting or social event. During my term on the Board, I have frequently received positive feedback from members who have hosted parties or meetings at our Club. Our catering staff at both clubhouses can offer the quality, service and attention to detail that ensures any event will be a success. The “Each One, Reach One” membership recruiting program continues to generate results. But we still need your help. Spring is an ideal time for our Membership Recruiting staff to sell memberships because there is so much going on with dining, social and athletic activities. Keep those leads coming in and earn free dues. As I enter my final few months as

BOARD OF GOVERNORS

President and as my three-year term on the Board winds down, I wanted to share that this has been a great experience. Serving on the Board with my fellow members has been extremely rewarding. I encourage any member considering running for the Board to submit a Nomination packet by March 21. Page 8 of this magazine outlines the details. Mark your calendars for Thursday, May 5, for the Club election. I encourage all members to stop by the Downtown Clubhouse to enjoy the festivities. On Feb. 15, Stan Musial received the Presidential Medal of Freedom at the White House. The next day, he dropped by MAC West wearing his medal for lunch in the Stan Musial Grille. Congratulations to MAC member Stan “the Man” Musial on winning the nation’s highest civilian honor! See you around the Club!

Run for the Board

T

he Missouri Athletic Club Nominating Committee is seeking 10 qualified candidates to run for the 2011 Club election. Don’t miss this rewarding chance to give back to the Club. If you are interested in running, please contact Linda Van de Riet at 314-539-4448 or lvanderiet@mac-stl. org. Nomination packets, complete with a photo, letter of intent and biography are due by 5 p.m., Monday, March 21, 2011. After receiving all applications, the Nominating Committee will narrow the field of candidates down to 10. These 10 people will appear on the ballot for the Club election on Thursday, May 5. The top five election winners will be announced at 8 p.m. on May 5, in the Missouri Room and will serve a three-

You get to attend and participate in many club events. You will also instantaneously make 14 new friends and meet 10 other new individuals in the two years to follow. C

elebrate old-time politics and democracy at its best at this year’s annual MAC elections. On Thursday, May 5, hundreds of MAC members will head to the Downtown Clubhouse for Election Day. After a complimentary dinner, five new members will be elected to the Board of Governors. Election night is a celebration of the past, present and future of the Club. It’s an evening for the members to show their Club spirit and enjoy the close camaraderie at the MAC. Those who attend will be treated to a traditional, complimentary buffet. One highlight of the day is the traditional walk through the famed gauntlet, which corrals members through a stretch of handshakes and pleas for votes. When they reach the voting booth at the end of the gauntlet, members will receive their ballot and vote for five candidates. Don’t miss out on this night of Club camaraderie and tradition. After the results are announced a member party will immediately follow. Be there to meet your future Board members, and join in the celebration.

You are invited to be a part of a very special Club tradition...Election Day! Thursday, May 5 Downtown Clubhouse Polls open at the Downtown Clubhouse, 7 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. Results Announced: 8 p.m. in the Missouri Room; Member party Missouri/Eads Room immediately following. Come join the fun, the camaraderie and be a part of this special day for all the members of the Club! This is a time honored tradition that has been a part of the MAC for over 100 years.

Have you experienced the excitement of election night? For many Club members, it is a yearly tradition to look forward to. Fred Heger- “I believe I have attended every election night at the club since 1975. It gives the feeling of a true club where all the members are able to gather, and it is a chance for everyone interested in the Club to meet together. I would encourage other members to attend as it is an evening of great fellowship and enables you to meet many people who you did not realize belonged to the Club as well as visit with old friends.” Kurt Hentz- “Since becoming a member of the Club, I have attended the past four election nights. It is a celebration of the Club, and a great way to congratulate those members who are willing to take on the responsibility of managing the Club (whether they win or lose). I will definitely attend this year….should be great fun…. it also falls on Cinco de Mayo. I would love to see all members attend. For those members that seldom make it Downtown, it would be great to see you. I have always had a great time.”

Be there to meet your future Board members and join in the celebration!

Funds raised at the auction will be used towards the purchase of new athletic equipment for both Clubhouses. The MAC Charitable Society for Children and the MAC Preservation Foundation will also receive a portion of the money raised. There were fantastic items to bid on in both the silent and live auction. Many members walked away with fabulous gift baskets, sports tickets and trips. The live auction kept the evening interesting as members battled back and forth for items. The Missouri Room looked beautiful for the elegant occasion thanks to Party Arts, who contributed to the set up. Thank you to all members who donated or purchased items at the auction. The Club appreciates your contributions.

I

nspired by the hit television show the “Biggest Loser,” the MAC began hosting its own weight loss contest in January. The contest has reached the midway point and will conclude on April 15. This year, 19 members are working out at both clubhouses. Included in the contest for each participant are health assessments, nutrition classes, as well as periodic weigh-ins. The winner of the contest will be the person who loses the most % of body weight, not the most pounds lost. Fabulous prizes will be presented to the winners. This is truly a contest where everyone who participates is a winner. The contest participants are experiencing noticeable results. The competitive element of the contest and the spirit of camaraderie among the participants have served as great motivators. Read the May Cherry Diamond for the final results.

Athletics

Tennis - How to Mentally Stay on Top By Kim Steinmetz, MAC Tennis Director n my past, as a tennis playing professional, I used many resources to improve my tennis. I believed that the mental side of my game was just as important, if not more important, than the physical aspect of my game. To improve my mental abilities I started by reading, “The Inner Game of Tennis” by Timothy Gallwey. I attended speaking appearances and read books by Sports Psychologist, James Loehr. I bought the tapes and the book, “Seeds of Greatness” by Denis Waitley. I also had several appointments with a hypnotherapist. Of course, most of the tennis playing population would like to be mentally tough and find a quick-fix for any mental blocks they may have. Therefore, here is a quick-list for a possible quick-fix. It is composed of those things that I believe helped me the most to be at my mental best when I played tennis. 1) Visualize winning, playing well, and hitting particular shots. This can be helpful even on the court right before you serve. Just picture where you want the ball to go and then let your body take over from there. 2) Stay loose by taking slow, deep breaths and by shaking out your limbs, making the joints and muscles loose. 3) When you are playing, focus on the point-at-hand; what is happening now. There are so many thoughts that can get in the way of this. Quickly recognize when these thoughts creep up, and bring your focus back to the court, the ball, or your footwork, as soon as possible. 4) Be positive. Sometimes it is hard to tell yourself you are doing well, when you actually think you are not. However, it is always possible to do better, and this you should know and believe. 5) Analyze your mistakes in the third party. In other words step outside yourself and evaluate your play as if you were evaluating the game of someone

I

18

MARCH 2011

else. (Preferably, someone you like!) 6) Respect the ability of your opponent. 7) Enjoy the competition. Don’t make being competitive a “bad thing.” 8) Rightly believe that working hard to do your best and trying throughout a match is success in itself. 9) Be friendly, but not so friendly that you lose your focus. 10) Be fair. A fair player is a confident one. 11) Be prepared for your opponent(s) not to be so friendly or fair. It is most likely that they will be nice, but if they are not, you don’t want this to rattle you. 12) Recognize a “bad day” before you go on the court. This was a most important realization for me and nothing I had read in my books. What I realized was that I was moody sometimes and this affected not only my tennis play, but more importantly, how I reacted to my tennis play. Once I realized my volatility beforehand, I became less volatile. 13) Don’t explain why you are playing poorly or why you missed a shot. You may have a good reason, and although a verbal explanation may protect your pride and explain future mistakes, you are setting yourself up for further failure. 14) Re-play the things that you did right in a match. 15) Learn your best energy zone and try to create this energy level each time you play. Your “best energy zone” is the amount and type of energy you exert when you are playing your best. All these mental strategies worked for me. They are not complicated and almost everyone of them is fairly easy to do. And just like your tennis strokes, mental abilities get better and easier with practice. As the old adage says, “Act the way you’d like to be, and soon you’ll be the way you act.”

Swimmers Log Laps

A

group of MAC swimmers logged hundreds of miles in the Downtown pool throughout 2010. Their hard work and dedication were recently rewarded at a recognition gathering on the pool deck. Swimmers log their laps each time they swim, and MAC Personal Trainer Keisha Burns keeps track of their miles throughout the month and the year. The records are kept on a board just outside of the pool. The swimmer who completes the most laps in a month at the Downtown pool receives the honor of “Swimmer of the Month.” At the end of the year, one of the 12 monthly recipients is given the title of “Swimmer of the Year.” Each swimmer was awarded a trophy for their accomplishments. Bill Mattson was the 2010 Swimmer of the Year. He swam a total of 144 miles throughout the year. Swimming is a great workout. Not only is it low impact, but it also gives you a total body workout. “Swimmer of the Month” Recipients: January: Dale Ross February: Maureen Kickham March: Mike Sappington April: Jim McDonald May: Donald Clooney June: Dave Nester July: Roy Gray August: Bill Mattson September: Charles Jellinek October: Rick Lodewyck November: Dave Ware December: Mary Boyle

Stengel Nets First Tourney Trophy

The Club boasts a vibrant youth program allowing children to play and train. The Cherry Diamond spotlights the athletic achievements of children of members. Please share your story ideas by emailing information to mmauzy@mac-stl.org.

G

oing into the final round of the Gateway Girls 10s Tournament, Katie Stengel, 10, was exhausted! She had fought her way through four other competitors. After a tiring hour of play, Katie took home the second place trophy in the tournament. It was only the third tournament she had ever played in. “I was proud that my hard work paid off,” Katie said. Katie has been working hard to improve her tennis game in the five years she’s been playing at the MAC. She works with MAC Tennis Pro Scott Stutz once a week. Katie decided to take up tennis after a friend told her how much fun it was. Now that she’s been consistently playing, she couldn’t agree with her friend more. “Tennis is a fun sport and a great way to get exercise,” Katie said. Much of her success in the sport can be attributed to her coach, Scott. “He’s helped me improve my skills and is always very motivating,” Katie said. Scott has seen significant improvements in Katie’s game and could not be more proud. His goal is for her to enjoy tennis every time she comes out to play. “I always want to motivate Katie to be a better player and become stronger,” Scott said.

Katie Stengel.

With hopes of continuing her tennis career, Katie has set goals for herself to help her play at her best level possible. Her first is to win more tournaments, and her other two goals will help her achieve the first. She also hopes to improve her overall game and compete at her highest ability. It looks like Katie is well on her way to reaching those goals. Her mom, Michele hopes tennis is something she will stick with her whole life. “Tennis is a life-long sport and something she can compete in individually,” she said She would recommend the MAC youth tennis program to other members because “the programs are a great way for your children to stay active and learn tennis skills,” Michele said. If you are interested in getting your children involved in youth tennis programs at the MAC, check out the junior tennis section of the Member Guide Book or on the MAC website. MAC Staff Spotlight Sports Camp Coordinator

I

f you walk into the multisport facility at MAC West on a weeknight or any time during the summer you’re usually greeted by excited screams, lots of laughter and smiling kids hard at play. Throughout the year, the MAC offers dozens of sports camps, clinics and games for your kids. These programs are carefully designed and run by Sports Camp Coordinator Eric Saxton. Coach Saxton, as he is known by his campers, has enthusiastically dedicated his profession to helping kids improve upon their athletic abilities.

Coach Saxton joined the MAC staff in 2006. He is responsible for creating, scheduling and executing all of the youth sports programs at MAC West. From weeknight clinics to summer long day camps, Coach Saxton interacts with hundreds of MAC kids each year. One of the most important things Coach Saxton hopes each child takes away from the programs is how important it is to live a healthy and active lifestyle. In the summer, day campers also are treated to healthy meals and snacks. Besides getting basic fundamentals and techniques from the camps, Coach Saxton and his staff work with the kids to help them become mentally tough. They don’t just focus on what happens on the court or the field, they talk about the mentality behind certain game situations. This formula Coach Saxton has created has proven successful. Coach sees these successes regularly. “Every day can be noted as terrific,” he said. “The successes range from working with a struggling team for six weeks and seeing them go undefeated the following season, to having a parent tell me after working with their child a coach told them they were the most improved player.” While Coach creates and supervises the programs at MAC West, he relies on a dedicated and enthusiastic staff of 1012 to help him execute the programs. Coach trains his staff to share his

teaching philosophies and his infectious positive, motivational attitude is also characteristic of his staff. The counselors and Coach motivate the sports campers by setting high expectations and sticking to them. “We expect it, they do it,” said Coach Saxton. “Our standards are high and when your staff, parents and campers are on the same page ‘it’s easy’.” As a former high school, college and pro athlete, Coach Saxton has years of experience working with children, athletes and coaches at all levels. His knowledge of sports has helped him to sculpt age and skill level appropriate exercises to help each child become a better athlete. If your kids are interested in trying out a new sport, or if you are looking to keep them active this summer, sign them up for sports camps at the MAC. For more information on sports camps you can contact Coach Saxton directly at 314-539-4468. You can also find information on the MAC website and in the Membership Guide Book.

Tee It Up this Year

“March comes in like a Lion” as the old saying goes, but St. Louis golfers know that, even during the blustery month of March, there are sure to be a few excellent golfing days. This is the time to pull out the golf calendar for 2011 and fill it with dates at some of our club’s great reciprocal opportunities. Starting with the oldest course, there is Glen Echo Country Club, the oldest private golf course west of the Mississippi and the site of golfing at the 1904 Olympics. Glen Echo is convenient to both downtown and

St. Clair is another beautiful parkland course less than fifteen minutes from the downtown clubhouse with a modern clubhouse and practice facility. The next club to visit is the Country Club at the Legends in Eureka. Designed by Robert Trent Jones, this beautiful facility exceeds 7,000 yards from the championship tees and includes challenging elevation drops and water hazards to create a wonderful test for golfers of any skill level. Finally, consider a day trip up to Springfield, Illinois to play Panther

Seven Home Improvement Don’ts 4. Don’t Forget to Prime Before

A

fter being cooped up all winter, the sunny skies and warmer temperatures may inspire you to tackle several home improvement projects on your ongoing list. A fresh start for the new season might be just the change your home needs. Check out these seven home improvement tips from HGTV.

1. Don’t Forget to Obtain Necessary Building Permits Kevin Amant (front) and Steven Amant (back).

F

or over 40 years Amant’s has been cleaning, restoring and maintaining carpets, upholstery and all types hard surfaces including floors, counter tops, and bathroom surfaces made from marble, stone, grout, ceramic tile, wood and vinyl. Amant’s work comes with a 100% customer satisfaction guarantee and is performed to the highest industry standards by professionally trained technicians who have been with the company for an average of 12 or more years. Amant’s cleaning solutions are environmentally friendly. Call Amant’s for a free estimate. See for yourself why St. Louis area floor dealers recommend Amant’s more than any other floor maintenance company in town Call Amants Floor Care, your neighborhood floor maintenance company, (636)-458-2500 or visit our website www.amantsfloorcare.com

24

MARCH 2011

Before starting any building project, be sure to check the rules and regulations for building codes, permits and inspections.

2. Don’t Disregard Safety

Avoid a bigger project by taking the necessary steps to ensure your safety and the safety of your home. This includes turning off the power, being mindful of how much you are putting into outlets and wearing safety equipment. Failure to follow safety precautions could result in you having to spend more time or money to fix the mistake it may cause.

3. Don’t Select the Wrong Windows If you need to replace any windows in your house, carefully look at all of your options. You want to make sure you select something that not only looks nice on the exterior of your home and matches the style, but you also want a window that keeps your home the proper temperature.

Painting

The task of paining yet another coat on the walls may seem too time consuming, but in the long run by priming the walls you will be preserving them and helping your actually paint color to adhere better.

5. Don’t Skimp on Grout Sealer

Tile flooring can transform the look of your kitchen or bathroom. Unfortunately, these two rooms can also be damaging to your tile floor with the spills, dirt and water they attract. Keep your tile in good shape by properly sealing the grout to keep out stains, dirt and water.

6. Don’t Install Flooring Without the Subfloor When installing a new floor, whether it be tile, laminate or hardwood, be sure to first lay a subfloor. Subflooring protects the floor from any moisture. It also helps to soundproof the floors. Using subflooring will prevent molding and deterioration of the flooring underneath.

7. Don’t Hire Anyone but a Pro

Before hiring anyone to do work on your home, check their credentials and licensing to ensure they are a professional. Just because someone is cheaper they may not be better for the job. Going with the professional ensures you will receive quality work done right. You don’t want to have to go and re-fix the problem a few years down the road because you went with a cheaper option.

n 1916, the MAC acquired the first object that could be considered art. It was a large bronze casting of Mercury after the original by Giovanni de Bologna. This launched what has become an extensive art collection owned by the Club. Over the years, members and former members have donated historic pieces of art that have been displayed all over the Club. Information about the MAC Art Collection can now be found on the MAC website. In the art section, you will find a PDF of the current collection information, including photos. The page also features the month’s Artist of the Month featured in the Downtown Art Gallery. To access the Art Collection online, first click on the “About Us” header on the main page of the Club’s website. Then click “Art Collection” on the menu on the left-side of the page. Be sure to check back often for more updates on new pieces and artists.

1935 In March, more than 700 members and guests filled the Club for a rollicking costume party. Costumes included everything for senoritas to elaborate Louis XIV outfits with powdered wigs. 1949 The Club’s All-Star volleyball squad defeated the Des Moines YMCA in a thrilling match held at the annual Good Fellowship Day Party. Des Moines had been ranked seventh nationally the previous year. 1955 On March 9, members and guests got a behind the scenes look at Club operations at an open house. The event featured guided tours of various departments. In the Rendezvous, the
