MEMBER HIGHLIGHT This month, I’d like to pay tribute to those who light up the eyes of our youngest MAC Members each holiday season: Santa and Mrs. Claus. Over the years, we have been blessed with incredible people who step into these iconic roles to make spirits bright for Christmas. Thank you to Mike Mount and Gov. Justin Fowler, along with former and current staff members like Debbie Burke and Wally Smith for their dedication to the Club in this way. The holiday season just wouldn’t be the same without you. This holiday season, I’m reminded of the joy that comes with a membership at the MAC. Being with other Members brings a smile to my face and provides memories I will cherish forever. Thank you for your friendship and the privilege of leading this Club. I look forward to meeting more of you, making many more memories and helping spread joy within the MAC in the weeks and years to come. If you see me around the Club, make sure you stop me and introduce yourself. I’m excited for the future of the Missouri Athletic Club and proud to tell everyone I am a Member of this premier Club. TECH TALK

FROM THE CFO Coming soon: Wi-Fi upgrades and enhanced Zoom Rooms throughout both Clubhouses! Rick Garrett, Director of Technology, has enlisted the crew at Essential Network Technologies (ENT) to rewire the MAC's network infrastructure and implement other upgrades to our Wi-Fi network, beginning at the West Clubhouse. These upgrades will enhance bandwidth, increase speed, and improve signal strength throughout the Clubhouses while providing flexibility and scalability in cloud applications for MAC’s business purposes. These upgrades will also enhance video conferencing capabilities, another area the club is targeting for improvements. As the Jack Buck Grille and 1903 dining room are being renovated, Garrett will be configuring the alcoves as Zoom Rooms. These are video conferencing rooms that are easy to run with a tap of a button. This upgraded functionality will also provide improved interaction for remote attendees. Other meeting rooms will receive upgraded Zoom capabilities as part of this initiative as well. Please bear with the Club as the work begins and stay tuned for updates on these exciting technology upgrades! F

LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER n last month’s magazine, I started a series of columns on civic engagement and how the MAC community is working to be a part of positive change in Downtown St. Louis. This month, we’re focusing on the future of our region: the youth! The Club’s civic engagement task force is committed to supporting programs, practices and partnerships that positively impact Downtown St. Louis, where the traditions of our Club are rooted, so that together we can thrive for future generations. We are prioritizing education and talent development, economic growth, social services and improved quality of life, and crime prevention and public safety. We recently had a meeting with leaders from the Urban League of Metropolitan Saint Louis and The Youth and Family Center. We’re trying to form some alliances and see how we can be of help there. The Youth and Family Center is all about community, which is something that’s near and dear to the MAC family’s heart. With these aligned visions, we see real potential for some kind of partnership. It’s important to us to invest in the growth and future of Downtown, which means investing in our youth to support and prepare them while they’re in school. This includes providing them with opportunities to create a better life – something we are doing through programs like STL Youth Jobs, which bridges the divide between our region’s youth and the growing skills gap in our workforce. The program has been in place since 2012 to help serve unengaged youth especially during the summer months when they are not in school, and the MAC began participating in it earlier this year. According to the program’s reports, 83 percent of STL Youth employees said that being in the program made them want to get more schooling, and 99 percent of participating youth recommend this program as an important way to stay out of trouble when not in school. We had three young adults with us this summer from the program and one of these awesome

I

6 F CHERRY DIAMOND

young people, Richard Butler, was hired on a full-time basis in our housekeeping department! We’re also looking into another program – launched in 2019 by the Regional Business Council and St. Louis Civic Pride Foundation called STL.works – that seeks RICHARD BUTLER to address the shortage in skilled labor for technical jobs that don’t require a four-year degree by providing mentorship and technical training to enter the job market more quickly after high school graduation. If your Downtown St. Louis business is interested in helping these kids get up and running, please look into programs like these! Our future is our youth, and we want to be part of the positive change in the Downtown area. We want to give kids an opportunity to explore what is possible, see what the MAC is all about and maybe even find a career path. We’ll be involved in these internship programs in the springtime and look forward to seeing how we can embrace the community even more. This is really a grassroots vision and effort to work with the kids around our neighborhood and give them positive influence. With our membership’s business owners and community leaders, this is an awesome opportunity to get involved in the program and provide strength in numbers. We can help give kids a sense of selfworth and hope, which is the biggest thing. We have to start in our neighborhood and work our way out. Change can start right here at the MAC! F See you at the Club!

Wally Smith, General Manager Missouri Athletic Club

M A C F E AT U R E

DEAR MAC MEMBERS: Ho! ho! ho! After a long year, it’s finally December, and Mrs. Claus and I are thankful to be getting out of the house to visit Missouri Athletic Club for the holidays. My wife and I stopped by the West Clubhouse not long ago to take a look at the new Physical Therapy studio. As most of you know, the joy of my life is making toys to give to all of the children on my "nice list." Unfortunately, I had a bit of an accident that involved slipping on a toy truck and hurting myself. Thankfully, our new physical therapist Jay Zaber was able to create a customized plan for me to get back on track in time for Christmas! While at the Club, we caught a glimpse of all of the exciting events taking place this month, and we think you’ll like what is coming. Kick-off the season with the MAC's Associates at their Spirit of Giving Holiday Party on Thursday, Dec. 2. Proceeds from this event will go towards a great cause — supporting the MAC Sports Foundation benefitting the 2021 Charitable Society for Children's charities: Caring for Kids, Sleep in Heavenly Peace and Sweet Babies. Our first scheduled appearance will be at Cocktails with Santa on Dec. 7 at the Downtown Clubhouse where I'll join the Apollos in singing your favorite Christmas carols while enjoying some holiday spirits. With the Clubhouse decorated to the hilt, what better time to share the Club with your family and friends? Or just stop by to tell us what’s on your Christmas list this year. Next comes Breakfast with Santa at the Downtown Clubhouse, where Mrs. Claus and I get our first glance at all the smiling faces of the MAC children. This year, we're happy to be doing two Breakfast with Santa dates on Dec. 11 and 18. Look forward to a delicious breakfast buffet set by Executive Chef Barton Philipps, photos with us and more at this sold-out event! On Dec. 12, we’re right back at it at the West Clubhouse for a similar event — Family Brunch with Santa. Mrs. Claus and I are so excited to be back at our favorite Club this Christmas and can’t wait to see everyone again. Ho, ho, ho! And Merry Christmas! Love,

Missouri Squash Doubles Club Championships Finals Day BY ALEX INGHAM, SQUASH PRO

As Semifinals Coach Muhammad Tahir wasted no time and picked off MICDS star Henry Byrne. Byrne couldn't quite outmaneuver Tahir enough. 3-0. Nick Bahn and Pat Dolan gutted it out in a back-and-forth match. Dolan coming all the back from way down in the fifth to get closed out 11-9. As Finals Bahn took a dream start moving the ball around quickly and dropping in soft touches 9-4 up. Then, he lost his length short on the Tahir FH and came off the gas Tahir came straight back 11-9. In the second game, Bahn started positively again stretching out Tahir enough and pulling away. 11-4. In the third game, Bahn is up 9-6, lobbing well and carving in some tight backhand touch at the front. He reaches game ball 10-9 but can't convert. Tahir cashes in on a couple of put-aways, and Bahn doesn't chase down a couple of balls — effects of the earlier semi-final looking evident. 12-10. In the fourth game, Tahir sensed the heavy legs and was pulling Bahn from pillar-to-post and the drops were flying in shorter and shorter. The match goes to Tahir 11-9, 4-11, 12-10, 11-5. Solid performance from Bahn, but Tahir's experience and touch pulled him through. Bs Semifinals Sameer Shafqat ended comeback king Keating's five-setter weekend in three games, and Sam Striler conserved some energy getting off in three against Goot. Bs Finals B Final started with Shafqat having the most games per time on court, This favors Striler, whose tactics were clear — keep the ball in play, extend rallies, be careful not to get too negative as Shafqat will put the ball down. The first game was brutal, and Striler wins 17-15. Shafqat backed up the second game with a tidy finish at 11-7. Juniors don't get tired! Striler responded by digging balls back and twisting and turning Shafqat, pulling away too far to catch up 11-6. The last game runs of points back-and-forth. Striler is on it quick by hitting the spaces and earns match point, Shafqat puts it away with a forehand hold straight. Striler re-groups and keeps his head to close out 13-11. Cs Semifinals Atif Shafqat secured a 3-0 win over RC's David Barnes whilst the RC girls Bridget Clennan and Avery Summers went the full distance. Clennan closes in five points. They also draw each other later in the Ladies' final!

18 F CHERRY DIAMOND

Cs Semifinals Clennan got stuck back leaving short balls for Shafqat to jump on 11-2. In the second game, Clennan settled and counter attacked deep well, making her short game more effective but couldn't quite convert 13-11 Atif. Game three Atif raced to a six-point lead, Bridget clawed back, Atif had too much pace off any short balls at the front 11-6 Atif! Ladies Draw All of the girls train together daily and know each other's games like the back of their hands, this time was a battle of the sisters, Charlotte and Annabelle Medlers take out the top seeds Bridget and Avery. Derdeyns both 3-1. Derdeyns pull through in three against the Medlers. In their second match, it was very close with each game possibly going either way. Bridget put pressure on Avery with consistent deep rails and crosses and executed a nice short game while retrieving many great shots from Avery. Avery equaled the effort and was adding a volley or two in the mix making for very difficult and long points. It could have gone either way and came down to a point or two in each game. It was really a high-quality match! Avery defeated Bridget 6-11, 11-8, 11-7, 6-11, 11-7. 50+ Will Goldstein beat Atif Shafqat 3-0. Congrats Will! He got caught by the racquet on his eyelid accidentally and was the first (and hopefully last) live stitching surgery in the squash pro shop. Ds Racquet Club's Dillon Sanders and John Crowley ended the MAC junior's hopes of a repeat MAC Club champs final in the semis. Sanders used his Goliath reach to great effect closing the court down, 3-0, which proved to be too strong for Crowley. A great week of squash concluded! Congrats to the new Missouri State Champions! Thank you to all the St. Louis squash community for your support. It's great to see everyone together again battling it out! Thanks to everyone at the MAC for helping host the championships. Looking forward to the next one! Cheers! Alex

The 11th Annual Bob Barnes Tennis Championships took place on Saturday, Oct. 23. After last year's event had to be canceled due to the pandemic, the 2021 event turned out to be a success, attracting 20 players! This year's tournament raised more than $2,000 for the Sports Foundation, benefiting the Charitable Society for Children. The tournament competition was stronger than ever and equally fun! After several rounds of doubles, the scores were tight. After two hours of play, the finalists should have been tired, but they powered through and the winner was decided! F Marvin Bohenkamp was this year's winner. F Chris Burnes was the runner-up. We hope to see even greater participation at next year's event in Oct. 2022. F
