hen I think about the MAC holiday season, I am reminded of the opening lyrics from that classic Christmas song first made famous by Andy Williams — December at the MAC truly is “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year!”
If you are in need of some Christmas spirit, I highly encourage you to visit the Downtown Clubhouse. The trains are running, the trees are trimmed and the gingerbread houses have been decorated to the nines. The MAC Associates will officially kick off the holiday season with their Annual Spirit of Giving Holiday Party on Thursday, Dec. 1, in the Missouri Room. Proceeds from admission (only $10!), the silent auction, raffle and wine pull will support the MAC Sports Foundation benefitting the 2022 MAC Charitable Society for Children’s designated charities: Kellsie’s Hope, Covenant House and Girls on the Run.
Once again, Santa Claus will be making multiple appearances at both Clubhouses. You and your family can enjoy Breakfast with Santa at the Downtown Clubhouse on three consecutive Saturday mornings (Dec. 3, 10 and 17). In addition, the West Clubhouse will host a Sunday Brunch with Santa on Sunday, Dec. 11. If cocktails with Santa are more to your liking, he will visit the Downtown Clubhouse on Monday, Dec. 5, with Christmas carols being performed by the MAC Appolos. Finally, Santa’s Workshop will be open at the West Clubhouse on Sunday, Dec. 18. By the time Christmas morning arrives, Santa is going to be exhausted! These events have proven to be very popular; if you haven’t done so already, please visit mac-stl.org/Events or call the Club to make reservations.
The iconic and always very popular Jack Buck Sports Awards returns to the Missouri Room at the Downtown Clubhouse on Wednesday, Dec. 7. This will be a sold-out event; as of this writing, only a few spots remain. If you cannot attend, the event will again be broadcast on KMOX radio.
If you want to take the hassle out of hosting Christmas, let the Club’s wonderful and talented chefs and servers take care of all your needs. Multiple seatings are available for both Christmas Eve at the Downtown and West Clubhouses and Christmas Day Dinner at the Downtown Clubhouse.
Although we will undoubtedly take time to rest and relax at the end of the year, your current Board of Governors (BOG) remains active and engaged in supporting the Club and serving the needs of our Members. Of particular note, our current Club General Manager/CEO, Wally Smith, has informed the BOG of his intent to retire at the end of August 2023. This will be the first of many times that I will take the opportunity to publically thank Wally for his 12 years of
service to the Club. I look forward to formally using this space to recognize Wally’s numerous achievements in the coming months. As a start, I will state our Members owe Wally a debt of gratitude for his leadership, ingenuity and perseverance, particularly as it relates to leading the Club through an unprecedented pandemic. Although Wally’s shoes will be difficult to fill, rest assured that BOG is well underway with a comprehensive and thorough succession plan and search process. Details will be forthcoming.
The BOG is also working with Club staff to plan and promote a Gala Event scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 11. As you are no doubt aware, 2023 marks the 120th anniversary of the founding of the MAC. The 120th Anniversary Celebration in February will be an outstanding opportunity to kick off celebrating the Club’s 120th year and to thank our Members for your Membership and commitment to the Club.
Regarding capital projects, the work in the women’s locker room and the pro shop at the West Clubhouse is complete. The men’s locker room at the West Clubhouse is scheduled to be fully remodeled by early December. We appreciate the patience and understanding from those who regularly use that space. The project was a bit more complicated and “indepth” than initially planned. I am confident that you will be delighted with the outcome.
At this time of year, I appreciate the Club’s exceptional staff. In turn, I want to thank all the Members who show their support and commitment to the Club’s team by contributing to the MAC Employee Holiday Fund. I can assure you that your donations are very well received.
Finally, I would like to recognize a recent recipient of the distinguished employee award.
Carly KrumpTitle: Accounts Receivable Coordinator Start Date: 04/12/20218
Carly, thank you for your service to the Club! We are able to keep the Club in a sound financial position through your detailed work as part of the accounting team. Thank you for being a contributing team player!
I look forward to seeing you at the Club, and I wish all of your families a very merry Christmas and a happy and healthy start to 2023!

LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER
Christmas time at the Club speaks to the tradition and spirit of the Missouri Athletic Club and special time with family and friends. Be sure to visit the Downtown Clubhouse to see the beautiful train and gingerbread display — I know this is a yearly tradition for many families. Our pastry team did a fantastic job with the Dr. Seuss theme and a special thanks to our committed train crew members who spent hours setting it all up.
Every year, our great Members contribute to the employee holiday fund, and we thank you so much for your generosity and for making such a positive impact on our employees. This fund, which is substantial, is split equally among all MAC employees and totaled just over $1,000 per employee this year! Members, thank you so much for this generous act of goodwill. I want to also extend a big thank you to all of our incredible staff at the MAC. Without our exceptional team running two Clubhouses, we would not be the extraordinary Club that we are known as today.
On this month’s cover, you can see that Santa and Mrs. Claus are excited about soccer in our city! The Club has two great events to look forward to this winter with the annual Hermann Trophy banquet and an excellent speaker series event the following month commemorating the launch of St. Louis City SC. When the new team kicks off in 2023, make sure you take advantage of the spectacular new Jack Buck Grille as your pre and post-game destination. The MAC shuttle will get you to the games in style. I also want to give our other newly renovated dining venue a shoutout. The culinary team at West is delivering themed, Club-favorite meals Monday through Thursday evenings at discounted prices. These dining nights are designed with great food and value as the cornerstone, and watch for a new menu designed around the same principles.
There are a lot of exciting things to look forward to in 2023, but for me, it will be a bittersweet year. I will be retiring next year and moving back to Tennessee to
be closer to family, friends and grandkids. My last day on the job will be Aug. 31, but I will stay on in a reduced capacity for an additional six months remotely to assist with the transition. Throughout my 12 years as General Manager of the Missouri Athletic Club, I have been honored to be part of so many incredible projects and events and to help make this Club the exceptional haven that it is. The goal was always to “leave it better than you found it,” and I think we have accomplished that. I have had the privilege of meeting so many amazing Members and working with such incredible Boards and staff members. I am humbled and grateful to have played a small part in the great and rich history of the MAC.
The Club’s search committee is diligently working to find the right person to honor the traditions and excellence of the MAC, but also take it to new heights. I have the utmost trust in the search committee’s ability to find the right leader with the experience and knowledge to run this unique establishment.
I want to thank my wife Allison for all her support, the MAC staff and all our terrific Members for making my career stop at the MAC incredible in so many ways. But the job is not done, and there are many exciting things to look forward to in the coming months, including the Youth and Family Center initiative, continuing to strengthen our partnership with Glen Echo Country Club and so much more. While I am looking forward to moving back to Tennessee to start on several home renovations, one of which is a pool for my grandkids, there is still a lot on my plate to accomplish before I go. Cheers to the upcoming New Year and all it has in store for us to enjoy.
See you at the MAC!

HAVING A BALL WITH SOCCER AT THE MAC
Lalas to Headline Hermann Trophy Banquet
Broadcaster and Former Hermann Award Winner Alexi Lalas Returns to MAC
Presented by Mungenast St. Louis & Mungenast & Burkhard Alton Toyota
An icon of American soccer is returning to the Missouri Athletic Club on Jan. 6, 2023. Before he helped launch the growth in popularity of American soccer as a standout on the U.S. Men’s National Team, Alexi Lalas received the Hermann Trophy in 1991 at the MAC. With his distinctive red hair and goatee, the standout defender had a successful professional career playing in Italy and in Major League Soccer. Following his playing career, he was inducted into the U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame and is currently one of the leading commentators in the game. Lalas will reflect on winning the Hermann Trophy more than 30 years ago, share his thoughts on the World Cup and preview the upcoming Major League Soccer season with the addition of St. Louis City SC.
Since 1986, the MAC has annually presented the Hermann Trophy to the top male and female collegiate soccer players in the country. Some of the biggest names in American soccer history like Mia Hamm, Kristine Lilly, Claudio Reyna and Jordan Morris have won the award prior to going on to international stardom.
Find out who will be crowned soccer’s next rising stars at the MAC Hermann Trophy banquet on Friday, Jan. 6. The top three male and top three female finalists for the award will be invited to the MAC’s Downtown Clubhouse. A press conference announcing the winners will take place to kick off the event. Make reservations now online at mac-stl.org/events.
Sponsorship opportunities with the chance to meet the finalists and Alexi Lalas at a VIP reception are available. Contact jwilson@mac-stl.org for details.

Achieve Fitness and Wellness Goals with Metabolic Testing
The Missouri Athletic Club fitness staff can help determine fitness and wellness goals for Members through metabolic assessment. The active test will explain what heart rate zone is needed to burn carbs for endurance training, burn fat for body composition and the amount of cardio needed. The resting metabolic test will explain how many calories are burned in a day at rest. The two tests help determine calorie restrictions or additions necessary to achieve fitness and wellness goals. The combination provides optimal results!

MAC Team Delivers a Win for Reunion
On Nov. 11, Lutheran North High School hosted the 50th reunion for the Classes of 1972 and ’73. The event was spearheaded by MAC Past President Mark Belew, who teamed with classmates Bill LaMothe, Gary Mantei and Houston Astros owner Jim Crane, who was fresh off winning the World Series less than a week earlier. They sponsored the event to let their classmates attend for free with a “suggested donation” to the high school of $50 per person. The event raised more than $1 million for Lutheran North!
“The MAC hospitality really shined that night, as they always do,” said Belew. “The Catering team did a spectacular job. We have been getting nothing but great feedback. There is no better place to host events like this than the MAC.”
The event featured dining stations, a concert pianist during happy hour and a DJ to keep the dance floor hopping late into the night. It was also a strong night for the hotel, with 25 rooms booked.
“My classmate Jim Crane is proud of his championship team with the Astros, well, I was proud to show off the championship team we have here at the MAC!” said Belew.
