LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT he holidays are upon us! Members are now preparing to attend Breakfast with Santa and Family Brunch with Santa, among other events. Big news: this year we will bring the Christmas/Holiday train display to the West Clubhouse! This is a classic MAC tradition, and it was time to spread it to the West Clubhouse. Thanks to Governor Cheri McLaughlin and the Senior Board class for their passion regarding this issue. And we are now closing out the celebration of the 120th anniversary year of our historic Club. I believe it has been a terrific year for the Club and its members. Our leadership transition continues to progress in a very positive way. New GM/COO Chip Misch is certainly settling in, and his leadership brand seems to be taking hold. Recently, on Nov. 13, Chip held a summit with Club employee leaders, asking each department to report on “what better looks like” at the Missouri Athletic Club. The work session lasted some six hours. The ideas that came forth from the session, from a grassroots level, were meaningful, and the department leaders took the assignment very seriously. We expect many of the ideas from this exercise will lead to actionable improvements, soon, all around the Club. The Board will hold a work session early next year to drill down further into “what better looks like” and to help push the ideas into action. The Board of Governors has been very busy too. Among other things, and in addition to our normally scheduled meetings, on Saturday, Oct. 21, the Board, Planning Committee and staff held a half-day work session to consider (and dream about) the future of our West Clubhouse facilities. The West Clubhouse is very important to our Club as we all know, and we need to make sure we plan well for the future of that facility for the benefit of our members. This will help continue to drive us toward our Vision to be the “foremost private club in St. Louis known for attracting exceptional people and enriching lives for generations.” Thanks in particular to Governors McLaughlin, McClanahan, Peterson, and DiBisceglie, PG Tracy Beckette, Chip and staff for their leadership in this important work. More to come on this topic. The MAC recently celebrated Veterans Day in a very big way, with the annual Veterans Day lunch event at the Downtown Clubhouse on Nov. 9, and the Downtown parade on Nov. 11. A major highlight for me was meeting

T

4 F CHERRY DIAMOND

Mr. Mike DeVito at the Nov. 9 luncheon, who the Club well recognized for his service to our Nation. Mr. DeVito was born in 1923, and moved to the United States when he was 9 years old. Mr. DeVito served under General Patton in WWII and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Mr. DeVito is truly a national treasure. Our Country’s ability to honor and thank our WWII veterans is coming to an end. Many members have told me that these Veterans Day events are some of the best things our Club does; I think they are right. I am extremely proud of the Club’s sponsorship of these great events. Thanks to the Chair of the Veterans Day Committee, Mel Burkhart, PG Beckette and PG Judith Hanses, among many others, who spent countless time making our Veterans Day events so special. Special thanks also goes out to the Looking Glass Corvette Club, who provided 18 Corvettes this year to transport our MAC Veteran honorees and Club representatives in the Veterans Day parade. Finally, I write once more regarding Board service. On Nov. 7, our Nominating Committee held an orientation event for future leaders. It was a well-organized event as we hope to cultivate our future Board members. There will be another such event on Jan. 24 at the West Clubhouse. Again, if you have interest in running for the Board of Governors, or in getting more involved in Board committee service, please reach out to me, any current Governor, or any Past President or Governor. Past President Angie Minges is the Chair of the Nominating Committee; Past President Brent Beumer is the Vice Chair. See you around the Club!

LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

T

here is much to update you on as we find ourselves in the midst of the holiday season with 2024 just around the corner! Thanksgiving was a very successful and enjoyable day for all members at both Clubhouses, and I trust your time at the MAC with family and friends was memorable. December is a month full of traditions at the MAC, and we look forward to seeing the families at the many events throughout the holiday season. Decorations will, as always, be at the forefront of the festivities, and if you haven’t experienced the model train display downtown, please put it on your list of things to do. Management continues to plan for a myriad of enhancements to our menus, as well as enhancements to our wine-by-the-glass offerings and craft cocktails list. F Our new lunch and dinner menus will be released in stages at both Downtown and West. Look for some menu highlights from the culinary team in the weeks ahead. We are fortunate to have some impressive talent among our ranks, and these menus will reflect their collective input and enthusiasm! F Our team has also joined forces with local wine aficionado, Patricia Wamhoff, to enhance our wine-bythe-glass offerings in each of our dining outlets, as well as expand our wine list. We are also preparing for a series of informal tastings for members at both Clubhouses. Our team is also working on an enhanced craft cocktails list for your enjoyment and will begin with weekly features as we enter into December. F As we work to unveil a series of programs and offerings, your input matters most! Please share your ideas and thoughts on the new menus and bar offerings. Needless to say, we are excited about the month ahead! Congratulations goes to Kelly Schaper, who is stepping into her new role as Sportsman’s Club Manager. Kelly has been with the MAC for 16 years and brings a distinguished background that fits perfectly with our plans to elevate the member experience on the "4th Floor" of the Downtown Clubhouse.

6 F CHERRY DIAMOND

I’d also like to recognize Katie Maurer, who handles so much for the MAC. Katie joined the MAC team in 2006 and has served in her role as Director of Special Events since 2009. She is the ambassador, coordinator, camp counselor and coach to the many extraordinary “Clubs Within the Club” and unique programs that make the MAC so very special! Her commitment and care is evident each and every day at the MAC ... from The Apollos, to the Women of Distinction event, to the Forever Young Club, Charitable Society for Children and The Mark Twain Society – Katie is the person facilitating and enhancing all that they do! Thank you, Katie – for all that you do! The MAC is an Athletic Club, which is at the very core of all that we do. The daily offerings and events are impressive and exciting. We should all expect continued growth and progress in our programs and offerings. I also happen to firmly believe that it is a sustainable and unique business that will continue to thrive and position the Missouri Athletic Club for much future success! In next month’s Cherry Diamond we will highlight our athletics department, the extraordinary team and share our vision for the future! We all just shared in a very special Thanksgiving Holiday, which serves as an important reminder of what matters most – our families and friends! I am particularly thankful for the opportunity to join the MAC family and serve this fine Club that is so rich in tradition. On behalf of the Missouri Athletic Club team of employees, we extend our very best wishes to you and your families for a wonderful and memorable Holiday Season and a prosperous and healthy 2024! Very best regards,

Donald “Chip” Misch, CCM COO/General Manager Missouri Athletic Club

A NEW CHAPTER OF CULINARY EXCELLENCE With the promise of refined dining experiences and the introduction of captivating events like the Piano Cocktail Nights, let the MAC be the destination for indulgence, where every meal is a celebration of refined taste and sophisticated camaraderie. As a new year unfolds, so too does a chapter of culinary excellence at the Club!

Welcoming the Magic of the Season: A Q&A with Santa and Mrs. Claus As the festive season approaches, anticipation grows for the enchanting moments that define the holiday spirit. Among the cherished traditions, Breakfast and Brunch with Santa at the MAC stand out as joyful occasions that bring families together. To offer a sneak peek into the magic behind the scenes, The Cherry Diamond sat down with Santa and Mrs. Claus for an exclusive Q&A session. Join us as we delve into their world of holiday cheer! CD: What about the tradition of celebrating Christmas at the Club is so special? SANTA: Oh, there's so many great traditions here. The food is always just so good. We look forward to having dinner down here. The MAC has been so great over the years. They pack me a nice dinner to go that I pick up on my way back to the North Pole. Mrs. Claus and I - we enjoyed that. Like every year, I enjoy just seeing all the children at Breakfast with Santa at the Club. I love seeing all the children and hearing all the new ideas for gifts. And then I get to take all those ideas back to the elves and they get to work on them. CD: How does the Downtown Clubhouse's Christmas tree compare to what's at the North Pole? SANTA: The MAC tree is much bigger. The Club’s Christmas tree is one of the most beautiful indoor Christmas trees that I have ever seen. It's done so spectacularly, and I know that all the children and families like to have their pictures taken before it. Mrs. Claus, of course, does an excellent job with our tree at the North Pole. CD: I see you have a lot of cookies in front of you. I'm sure these aren't the only ones you'll be eating this season ... SANTA: Probably not. It is time to fuel up for that big night. CD: Do you have any fitness goals the MAC can help you achieve in the new year? SANTA: You know, Rudolph was encouraging me to try a 5k. I think Paul and Courtney at the Club can help get me in shape for that – HO, HO, HO! CD: Now for the hard-hitting questions, what can I expect in my stocking this year? SANTA: Oh, boy. Let's see here. What about that car that you've always wanted? The Trans Am? CD: You know about the Trams Am? The '77 black Pontiac Trans Am? STANTA: Yes, that’s it. Santa remembers these things. CD: I’ll be watching for that! Scan to watch the interview with Santa and Mrs. Claus!

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Santa and Mrs. Claus for taking the time to spread their holiday spirit with the MAC. DECEMBER 2023 F 17 May your days be merry, your December at the MAC festive, and your holidays filled with love, laughter and timeless magic!

Plus a greenhouse, ice cream parlor, library, art gallery, chapel and more, all nestled amongst private pathways and gardens exclusively for residents and their visitors. Don’t Crash the Party Doubles Tactics on the Tennis Court from Carolyn Kramer, MAC Adult Tennis Coordinator In doubles, it is always important to get to the net. Whether by serve and volley or return and come-in, it is a well-known fact that the team that gets to the net controls the point. So, what does a team do if they get beat to the net? The answer is simple: earn your invitation, don’t crash the party! Attempting to “crash the party” often leads to defensive shots hit from poor positions on the court. The net team has

control of the point and takes away the time needed to get to an offensive position on the court. A few simple ways to “earn your invite” include low, cross-court groundstrokes, drives through the middle and deep lobs to get your opponent off the net. Each of those scenarios can earn you an invite to the net party by creating an approach shot or weaker ball to attack. Be patient and earn your invite! DECEMBER 2023 F 21

Happy Holidays

FROM COACH MAGGIE!

The holiday season is a special time of year. However, for those of you on a weight loss journey, the holidays can be challenging with all the parties and tempting treats. Staying on track during the holidays requires a balance between enjoyment and discipline. Here are some mistakes to avoid: Avoid the Party Attitude: Many people rationalize splurging on treats during the holiday season because it’s a special occasion. Don't indulge in a free-for-all mentality. Control portions, especially with desserts. Using Big Plates: If you use large dinner plates, you’re likely to eat large portions of heavy foods. Opt for smaller plates to avoid overeating. Prioritize protein, limit sides and maintain a visible plate under the food. Sitting (or Standing) Too Close to Food: Steer clear of temptation by not sitting or standing too close to the food. Choose healthier appetizers and maintain some distance from the dessert table. Forgetting Fiber: Focus on fiber-rich foods to stay satisfied. Many traditional dishes like rolls, cookies and pies contain little to no fiber, making them easy to overeat. Focus on fiber-rich foods to stay satisfied. Swap out traditional dishes for healthier alternatives, such as sweet potatoes instead of mashed potatoes, and whole-grain bread instead of white rolls. Using Too Much Butter: The average

24 F CHERRY DIAMOND

person consumes the fat equivalent of three sticks of butter at a holiday feast. Be mindful of butter consumption, as it adds up quickly. Prioritize your favorite foods and skip unnecessary butter-laden items. Thinking Any Fruit/Vegetable Dish is Healthy: In addition to adding calories, sweeteners found in sides like cranberries or canned yams can spike your blood sugar and increase your appetite. When possible, choose fresh or frozen fruits and veggies over canned varieties. Covering Food in Sauce or Gravy: These additions can nearly double the calorie content of your meal. Rather than pouring sauce over your food, try dipping food into sauces instead. Have sauces on the side and portion them lightly. Always Adding Toppings: Sweet toppings add ample calories and virtually no nutrients. Real, whole foods can taste just as good without the excessive toppings. Try using these sweets in moderation if they’re added to your dish. Feasting on Dessert: Holiday desserts can easily match or surpass the calorie

content of an entire meal. One slice of pecan pie supplies more than 500 calories, roughly the amount of one serving of turkey, stuffing and mashed potatoes combined – yikes! Trimming your dessert sizes to my two-finger rule or taking bitesized nibbles of a few options can help keep your caloric intake more reasonable. All-or-Nothing Thinking: Start your day by telling yourself you can be in control and also enjoy your holiday meal. Allow yourself small portions of everything you love. Practice portion control and remind yourself that occasional indulgence is okay. Overdoing the Drinking: Sugary and alcoholic beverages can be rich in calories and spike your blood sugar. Opt for moderation with one glass of wine or a light cocktail and schedule workouts to alleviate stress. Stressing Too Much: Stress is one of the biggest contributors to overeating and weight gain during the holidays. Stay active with walks or workouts to release cortisol and combat cravings. Aim for 10k steps a day and schedule workouts to alleviate stress.

MAC WELLNESS

Metabolic Assessments at the Downtown Clubhouse

The Missouri Athletic Club fitness staff is here to help members determine their unique fitness and wellness goals through metabolic assessment. Available at the Downtown Clubhouse until Dec. 31, both active and resting metabolic tests unveil the secrets to reaching your health goals by fine-tuning calorie intake. Members are already noticing a positive changes since testing: “I’ve never been much for fitness or dieting, but when we recently joined the MAC, I thought it would be crazy not to at least try to get into shape. Then, I saw the information about metabolic testing and figured what a perfect way to get started. I quickly got some good news. My metabolism was pretty high, so even a little effort could pay off. My optimal heart rate for burning fat was pretty low, so I wouldn’t have to kill myself running and sweating to make progress. When I sat down with Maggie and saw her approach, I realized I wasn’t going to have to starve myself either. Maggie made it easy by creating menus based on my preferences. I’m still eating well, much better quality, and I’m not hungry. I also started working out twice a week with Natalie (she’s great!). The result is that I’ve dropped 20 pounds in just over a month, and I’m still going. It’s not that I haven’t ‘cheated’ along the way. I have indulged more than once, but now I see the impact and know what to do to get back on track. This really has been a game changer for me.” – MAC member
