from the president Unprecedented. Unsettling. Uncertain. These are words we often overhear in conversation at present. Our places of employment, recreation, family, life events and other aspects of our human experience face unprecedented and unparalleled disruption. How we work, shop, eat, interact, play and relax practically all changed and all in unison, leaving us unsettled. Uncertainty exists as we do not yet see a light at the end of the tunnel. With COVID cases rising, we continue our ride on the rollercoaster. As the holiday season quickly approaches, our traditions and family-centric gatherings face a novel reality. Each of us responds to the situation differently. Some of us take it in stride and adapt easier; others undergo stress about what’s in store. One thing that remains constant for us is the MAC. While restrictions and protocols exist and periodically change, our Club offers a place where we can escape and safely engage in athletic, social and dining activities. We receive premier service from familiar faces dedicated to our Members. We continue our MAC traditions, even if the experiences vary from precedent. Club spirit remains strong, and the bond among our fellow Members unbreakable. Last month, we honored our veterans with a hybrid program that included live award presentations and impressive video content. Members and guests attended live or virtually, depending on their preference. If you have not watched the video, I highly recommend you visit the Club’s website and do so. We cannot do enough to honor these heroes. We started a new tradition with the Halloween costume party. Attendees enjoyed dining and dancing, and for once masks were not only required, but fun! Golf fans shared

brunch, watched the Masters in the Missouri Room and raised funds for the Charitable Society for Children with a silent auction. Shoppers enjoyed the annual Sip and Shop, which we held at the Downtown Clubhouse due to St. Louis County restrictions. With the lobby decorated to the hilt, trains running and our fabulous gingerbread houses, the Downtown Clubhouse will be decorated in all its holiday splendor. The MAC Associates Spirit of Giving Holiday Party will kick off the festivities on Dec. 3 at the Downtown Clubhouse. On Dec. 7, the Apollos and Jolly Ol’ St. Nick will entertain Members with complimentary caroling at our Cocktails with Santa event. The iconic Jack Buck Sports Awards banquet is Dec. 8 in the Missouri Room. Capacity is limited for this signature event, and few spots remain. If you cannot join live, the event will be broadcast on KMOX radio and FOX Sports Midwest. Breakfast with Santa will be Dec. 5, 12 and 19 at the Downtown Clubhouse. Christmas Eve and Christmas Day dinners represent excellent opportunities to continue or start a family tradition at the Club. Please register early, as spots are limited due to capacity restrictions. Thank you to all Members who contribute to the MAC Employee Holiday Fund and show your support for our great employees. We continue to invest in our Club. We completed the Robert J. Trulaske Jr. Family Foundation restoration project downtown, which represents a significant improvement to our Club and our City. Planning is underway for our Preservation Foundations Gala on Feb. 13. We will celebrate the completion of the project and properly thank those that made it

possible, including the Robert J. Trulaske Jr. Family Foundation. While we do not intend to embark on any significant capital projects in the near term, our planning team continues to imagine the future of our Club. We initiated an assessment of potential capital projects based on feedback from our Members about their aspirations. We continue to long-range plan while we navigate the pandemic. We continue to improve the safety and cleanliness of our Club and our community. We established the Downtown Security Task Force (DSTF). The goal of the task force is to improve the safety/ security and cleanliness of St. Louis City through the influence of MAC Members who are leaders in local business and the community. We heard from our recent COVID survey that safety and security in downtown St. Louis represent key concerns of our Members. While we have ongoing efforts to continuously improve the safety and security at our clubhouses, this effort involves a broader outreach. In closing, despite unprecedented and unsettled times, fraught with ongoing uncertainty, our Club represents an unwavering premier experience for us and our families, combining tradition with agile services and programs to help us plot a course during the pandemic. Our Club is open and I look forward to seeing you at one of the clubhouses soon. The Board of Governors joins me in wishing you and your families a happy and healthy holiday season!

from the finance chairman As a supplement to the quarterly financial reports prepared by the club’s Chief Financial Officer, Pam Roth, I felt it was important to provide a quick summary of where the Club is financially through the first two months of our fiscal year, September and October. For the two months, operating revenue exceeded budget by $47,000 with the biggest gains in West Food and Beverage, Tennis, and West Pro Shop. In addition, we’ve experienced a positive variance of $50,000 in our Repairs and Utilities departments compared to budget, and nearly $30,000 in the General Clubhouse departments. One area where we are slightly under budget is our Member headcount. As of the end of October, our membership headcount was 2,191, which was 8 less than budget. At the bottom line, operating cash flow

generated during the two months was $131,000 better than the budget. Most of the positive variance was generated in October, and we’ve dubbed it “Christmas in October!” as it certainly feels like a gift! This brings us to the outlook for the next 120 days. With the temporary closing of West’s indoor dining during one of the busiest times of the year, we anticipate that the financial performance for November and December will be less favorable than budget. This will carry into January, with February getting back to budget. February marks the mid-point of our fiscal year, and we project that we’ll be on budget for the first six months. As I mentioned in my last article, our Finance Committee and Board of Governors have been proactive in identifying strategies to ensure our financial stability. Rest assured, we have already implemented

several of these strategies and have others in the wings if needed. Management’s mission is to create a Member experience that provides exceptional value in a safe environment. So take advantage of Member specials in our dining outlets, come to the Club for a socially distant tennis lesson, and browse the selection of Lululemon in our Pro Shops. And remember, your Downtown Clubhouse has capacity and is able to host your holiday party, accommodate your guests, and is a gathering place for friends and colleagues. See you around the Club!

Staying Safe

AT THE DOWNTOWN CLUBHOUSE

In recent months and years, the Missouri Athletic Club has taken steps to upgrade its security technology and ensure the safety of both employees and Members in and around the Downtown Clubhouse. In the November Cherry Diamond, we shared that new LEDs had been installed in the parking garage and new cameras had been installed throughout the Clubhouse. Initiatives like this continue to be implemented and will be shared as they are carried out. MAC Board and staff members recently formed the Downtown Security Task Force (DTSF), which meets with the mission to ensure those in the Clubhouses both feel safe and are safe. Since the restoration project was finished on the exterior of the Downtown Clubhouse, new cameras are being installed on the 4th Street side and Washington Avenue side. In addition, for larger functions, the MAC is looking into hiring uniformed police officers to greet people and ensure the safety of those walking from the parking garage to the Lucas Street entrance of the Clubhouse, which is the only entrance open at this time. The DTSF noted in a recent meeting that the presence of an “Officer Friendly” type of person would give peace of mind to Members, staff and guests as they arrive. In the garage, new equipment is set to be installed prior to the 2021 Cardinals season, which would include a system that tracks license plates entering and exiting the garage and additional cameras and lighting. GM Wally Smith noted that with the Federal Reserve building next door and the MAC’s security efforts, the Clubhouse is located on one of the safest blocks in St. Louis City. With restaurants closed in St. Louis County, now is the perfect time for West Clubhouse regulars to come to the Downtown Clubhouse and enjoy a meal and the Clubhouse’s festive holiday décor. The beloved train display is up and running, and the iconic MAC Christmas tree is ready for photos in the lobby. With the above safety and security measures in place, the Downtown Clubhouse is the perfect place to get in the holiday spirit and find a sense of normalcy. “Come on down, and don’t forget your safe route,” he said. The most direct routes to the Downtown Clubhouse from I-64 and I-44 can be found below. Secure Your Platinum Partnership Status MAC Adds Exciting New Features to the Platinum Partnership Program The Platinum Partnership has been a recruitment tool for the Club since its inception approximately 10 years ago and it has added a great boost to Club Members referring their friends and colleagues over the years. One side-effect of this program has been the negative effects of losing a Platinum Partner who resigns or takes a leave from the Club. This negative aspect has especially come to light during the pandemic and unfortunate lockdown of the MAC facilities. In an effort to make the Platinum Partnership program an entirely positive experience, the Membership Committee and Board of Governors have approved the following changes to the plan. F Effective Oct. 1, all Members in the Platinum Partnership dues category will remain in the category even if their Partner

should resign or go on a leave from the Club. F This will remain in effect until such time as any Board of Governors could make changes to the Membership categories in the future. F To form a Platinum Partnership, any current Member of the Club must also be the new Members Proposing or Seconding Sponsor. F Now is the perfect time for any Member in the Diamond Club or A la Carte categories to recruit a Member and lock in their Platinum Partnership. F Bring your potential Platinum Partner to the Monthly Membership Mixer to give them a taste of the Club. Cherry Diamond F DEC 2020 F 9

WINE TASTING AND SALE

PAIRING FINE WINE WITH A GOOD TIME Members filled the Downtown Clubhouse Missouri Room for the 17th Annual Wine Tasting and Sale on Thursday, Oct. 29. This event, sponsored by the MAC's Wine Society, has become a Club staple in the last couple decades as it brings Members together for camaraderie, Christmas shopping and, of course, wine. Though the pandemic dictated a change of venue from the usual Art Room to the larger Missouri Room, the night went off without a hitch. This event allowed attendees to channel their inner sommelier, by sampling many different wines from a variety of top vendors. They were also able to enjoy hors d’oeuvres while getting an early start on their holiday shopping.

Popping Corks AT SIP AND SHOP On Nov. 18, Members and their guests gathered around the Downtown Clubhouse for the holiday season’s annual Sip and Shop, sponsored by the Women’s Initiative Group. This event provided attendees with the opportunity to get an early start on holiday shopping, perusing several different vendors while enjoying a glass of wine and appetizers. Although the latest St. Louis County guidelines prevented the group from hosting the event in the usual 1903 dining room, the Downtown Clubhouse was able to accommodate the event. Vendors transformed the Missouri Room into a shopping wonderland that featured candles, home décor, jewelry and more.

Back by popular demand, the printed magazine will return to Members' mailboxes beginning in January 2021. The MAC is excited to unveil a completely redesigned magazine featuring a refreshed design, new features and a larger format. For more than a century, Members have relied on the magazine to keep up with Club news, upcoming events, Member happenings and more. During the pandemic, the MAC has continued to publish the magazine online. In August of 1903, one month before the MAC opened its doors, the Club published its first magazine. For more than a century, the Cherry Diamond has chronicled Club news and events. The Cherry Diamond remains an essential communication outlet for Club Members. The rapid evolution in technology led some prognosticators to predict the demise of printed publications. While the magazine is now available online for those who prefer to read it in a digital format, the membership survey results indicate that the printed Cherry Diamond is still the preferred source of communications for most Members. The increasing variety of communication outlets has not replaced the venerable Cherry Diamond but served as a valuable supplement 16 F Cherry Diamond F DEC 2020

for Members to stay connected to the Club. Though the magazine has gone through several iterations including three names — the Missouri Athletic Club Journal, Ye Clubbe and, finally, the Cherry Diamond — and several redesigns, the magazine has remained focused on celebrating the individual and collective achievements of MAC Members. It has sought to provide the primary link between the Club and its Members. A perusal of volumes also provides a window into St. Louis and the world in the past century through a collection of stories and advertisements for the city's historically prominent companies. Through the years, Members have trusted the magazine to connect them with the best local businesses to help with all of their needs. Make the MAC a part of your marketing plan for 2021. With the fresh, new Cherry Diamond returning, plus an exciting variety of sponsorship opportunities, there are a number of ways to connect with your fellow Members. The MAC’s Director of Sponsorship, Ashley Hancock, can help you customize an effective plan to meet your marketing goals. Contact Ashley Hancock at ahancock@mac-stl.org for more information and pricing.

Dear MAC Members, Ho! ho! ho! After a long year, it’s finally December, Mrs. Claus and I are thankful to be getting out of the house to visit Missouri Athletic Club for the holidays. My wife and I stopped by the Downtown Clubhouse not long ago to get a sneak peek at what is happening this year, and we think you’ll like what is coming. As most of you know, the joy of my life is making toys to give to all of the children on my "nice list," so it was a pleasant surprise to see the MAC staff had assembled the elaborate train display by themselves this year. I caught up with Director of Operations Joe Dietz to learn more about the history of this Downtown Christmas staple, and you can hear more about our conversation in the article beneath this. We kick off our season with Breakfast with Santa at the Downtown Clubhouse, where I get my first glance at all the smiling faces of MAC children. This year, we're happy to be doing three Breakfast with Santa dates on Dec. 5, 12 and 19. Enjoy a delicious breakfast buffet set by Executive Chef Barton Philipps followed by gingerbread house making, face painting and other activities. Then, stop by and see us for a special photo opportunity. We’ll have a special early Christmas present for each child. There are still a few spots left so call 314-539-4470 to make your reservations now. The next Monday, Dec. 7, we’re right back at it with the Apollos for Cocktails with Santa. Members can stop by the Downtown Clubhouse for a festive holiday season kickoff after work complete with carols and plenty of wassail to go around. With the Clubhouse decorated to the hilt, what better time to share the Club with your family and friends? Or just stop by to tell us what’s on your Christmas list this year. Don’t think we’re only coming to the Club to see the adults, though. On Dec. 5, 12 and 19, we will have the opportunities to meet with all the good little girls and boys while enjoying delicious meals. Mrs. Claus and I are so excited to be back at our favorite Club this Christmas and can’t wait to see everyone again. Ho, ho, ho! And Merry Christmas! Love,

HISTORY OF THE MAC TRAIN In the last month of each year for the past decade, Downtown Clubhouse visitors of all ages have been entranced by the MAC’s elaborate holiday train display. Though the display of recent years is a sight to behold, it hasn’t always been so grandiose. Several years ago, Director of Operations Joe Dietz saw a holiday train display on TV and wondered if something similar would be a fun addition to the Breakfast with Santa events the Club hosts every holiday season. He looked on eBay and found a train set, and the train’s previous owner even came and helped set it up the first year. “We couldn’t keep the trains on the track,” Dietz said. “The kids loved them.” There was enough excitement around the train display that Breakfast with Santa started building along with the display itself. Members got involved, including John Salter, Ed Holderle and others. Many of the Members had their own trains to lend to the cause, and the MAC gradually expanded its setup to what it is today. The MAC now owns its own New York street scene, custom tables and trains. Igor Sahbaz, an employee at the Downtown Clubhouse, has become one of the chief engineers on property, along with his father. Since the whole display is automated now, they take great care in setting up the timers and making sure everything is running smoothly. This year, the train greets masked visitors who arrive at the Downtown Clubhouse for everything from a meal in the Sportsman’s Club to the upcoming Breakfast with Santa events on Dec. 5, 12 and 19. To learn more and register for Breakfast with Santa, visit mac-stl.org or call 314-539-4470. Cherry Diamond F DEC 2020 F 19

GETTING AN A+ EDUCATION Whether a child is about to start kindergarten or high school, choosing where they will get their education is an important decision. Many different types of schools exist in St. Louis, so it is important to choose which one works best for them. Sometimes the choice of which school to send your children can be overwhelming. In St. Louis, outside of the public school system, education options include 16 charter schools and a few hundred private schools (both parochial and secular). In addition to these options, there are other factors to consider including location, tuition cost, test scores and academic performance, philosophy, faculty, extracurricular activities, facilities, class size, admission requirements and college placement. This often leaves many parents wondering where to begin. To help simplify the process, here are some simple recommendations: 1. PRIORITIZE THE MOST IMPORTANT CRITERIA FOR EACH CHILD AND FAMILY Start by making a list of the most important

ESTO VIR - BE A MAN!

Latin for “Be A Man”, Esto Vir is not just a writing on the wall or words on our seal. It reminds us that the purpose of a Marianist education is to identify and develop the full range of gifts and talents that God has placed on each person. Esto Vir calls the young men of Chaminade to take responsibility, take initiative, make the right choices and as said by Fr. Chris Martin ‘97, “Become the man the world needs you to be”. Leaving a Legacy

AFTER

Do You Have a Will? An Estate Plan? Amazingly, more than 50 percent of adults in the United States do not have a will or an estate plan, and many wills and estate plans have not been updated in many years. Writing wills and estate plans and updating them takes time and can be expensive, but one easy and inexpensive way to ensure that your heirs and favorite charities receive assets at the time of your death is through beneficiary designations. Beneficiary designations are easy to make and easy to change. In order to leave a lasting legacy here at your Club, please consider designating the MAC or one of its three foundations (Preservation, Sports and Arts) as a beneficiary on one of your retirement accounts (IRAs, 401ks, 403bs, etc.) or a life insurance policy.

TENNIS TIPS

SIX QUICK DOUBLES TIPS 1. Exude positivity and confidence in yourself and your partner. 2. Communicate with your partner both during play ("switch," "mine," "help") and after points ("good shot" and "nice try"). You can also give strategy tips. 3. Move toward the net with a purpose. When you are at the net, keep yourself moving to cover your alley. Attack when the opportunity arises. Help cover for your partner. Back up in defense. And poach when you can! Whenever you volley, try to take a strong step forward and hit with intensity.

4. 5. 6.

Look for gaps around your opponents and aim for the largest one. If in doubt as to where to place your shot, the middle is usually a good choice. To keep your opponents off-balance, don't forget to use the lob. Choose where to place your lob—over the weaker player, over the player standing closer to the net or over either opponent's backhand side. Work on getting a high percentage of first serves in to help your partner have more success at the net.

Fit for the Holidays First of all, I would like to acknowledge that this holiday season will not be the norm, just like everything in 2020. Although I would hope that everyone is going to find some normalcy in the holiday season and enjoy themselves. To me, the secret to making the holidays healthy is to examine the word holiday. Holiday means one day, not a "holiweek" or "holimonth." From my observation, the eating season as I would like to refer to the fall through winter change in the way people eat is from Halloween with candy, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas and New Year’s, with everything from cookies and cakes to turkey and mashed potatoes

with gravy, all the way to the Super Bowl with all its extravagances. I understand, I love all this food too. Although I have learned that if you stuff yourself on Halloween, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, New Year’s Eve and at the Super Bowl party, that’s six days out of the year and really amounts to a negligible amount. But if you choose to make it a "holiweek" or even "holimonth" it does add up. As far as your activity levels during the holidays, they can also be affected. Relax on Thanksgiving, relax on Hanukkah or Christmas, New Year’s Eve and even Super Bowl Sunday. Don’t relax for weeks or even months during the holiday chilly weather

season, waiting to get in shape come springtime. Stay in shape by staying on track with your eating and exercise plans. Your eating and exercise plans can be greatly enhanced by a fitness professional such as myself. I can guide you through the process of learning how to integrate your eating and exercise habits all through the eating season. Contact me directly and I will be your personal health, wellness and also physical appearance instructor and motivator. I am a change agent. Happy Holidays and Good Health to you all.
