LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT reetings, fellow Members. It’s hard to believe January is history, and we are nearly one year into the pandemic. We are pleased that St. Louis County eased restrictions and our West Clubhouse can again serve food and beverages. More importantly, this allowed the Club to recall most of the West employees from furlough who are back providing outstanding service to our Members. The staff at our Downtown Clubhouse also continues to safely offer nearly all the customary services and amenities to our Members. The MAC is open! Our Club remains on solid financial footing despite the headwinds of the pandemic. The Club slightly outperformed budget through the first four months of the fiscal year. This is due in large part to the loyalty and resilience of our Membership, bold action by the Board, and successful efforts by Staff to manage expenses while providing quality services to our Members within the restrictions imposed by St. Louis City and County. Member spirit and engagement remain strong! Our Members yearn for entertaining events and merriment. Preparations are underway for a Super Bowl Party on Feb. 7, sponsored by the MAC PAC Social Club, and the Mardi Gras Masquerade party on Feb. 13. Feb 20 features the first annual MAC Cornhole Tournament. Join the Mark Twain Society and the Sports Foundation for a cornhole tournament, college basketball game watch party, food stations and prizes. The Missouri Room at the Downtown Clubhouse will hold these events with plenty of room for social distancing and adherence to all CDC guidelines. Note that the Club will reschedule Good Fellowship Day, one of the great MAC annual traditions typically held in February, once the City’s rules permit all of the activities normally enjoyed on that day. At a Special Meeting of the Board on Jan. 14, the Governors elected the 2021/2022 officers of the Club: The 106th President and first female President in the 118-year history of the Missouri Athletic Club is Angie

G

Minges; the First Vice President is Aaron Pawlitz; the Second Vice President is Julie Ahrling; the Secretary is Duke Niedringhaus and the Treasurer is Matt Gross. Congratulations to Angie and an exceptional class of leaders. Our Members can be confident this class will provide strong leadership for the Club as we transition beyond the pandemic. Continuity of fervent leadership is vital to sustain the Club’s future. The Board of Governors works closely with General Manager Wally Smith and staff to deliver premium experiences to our Members as well as plan for the future of the Club. Prospective Governor candidates may submit letters of intent to the Nominating Committee through March 1. Election campaigns begin April 26, the Board class is elected May 6, and the new Board term begins May 20. Members interested in serving can contact a member of the Nominating Committee for an information packet. While uncertainty lingers, we remain optimistic about 2021 and the prospects of a steady return to our customary routines, including the premier athletic, dining and social activities that we enjoy immensely at our Club. The hockey season has started, baseball is on the horizon, and outdoor activities will present themselves again soon. In the meantime, we savor the services and amenities currently accessible at the Club and the ongoing opportunity to cultivate the relationships with our fellow Members. The Board continues to engage Membership to reimagine the future of our Club and proactively plan to ensure the Club continues to thrive for future generations. I look forward to seeing you at the Club soon. F

LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER lthough there’s not a lot of capital projects going on currently at the MAC, we’ve been busy behind the scenes upgrading our systems to make for a more seamless experience at the Club! The first thing we did for the Downtown Clubhouse was an overall assessment of security to figure out where we had some shortcomings and areas we could improve upon, which ended up creating a domino effect. We started with upgrading all of our hotel room locks on the doors that were antiquated. The new fobs feature new technology, and because of this, we had to go ahead and upgrade our front-of-house software for the hotel. In the process of doing that, we upgraded the locks on the doors around the perimeters of the Downtown Clubhouse and access into and out of the building. Garage operations are going to be changing, too, with the additional of several new equipment components that will be all automated and allow us to track what cars are coming and going. We have new lights going up in between the garage and the Clubhouse building so we have a safe walkway. We’ve also hired armed police and security guards for big events to give our Members and guests peace of mind as they cross between the garage and the building. At this point, we’re probably one of the safest blocks in Downtown St. Louis, and having the Federal Reserve as our neighbor definitely helps. In line with all of these upgrades, we’re going to be changing website vendors in March. The new website will feature improved functionality and will make signing up for classes and making

A

FOOD AND BEVERAGE MINIMUM

reservations much easier than it has in the past. The new website will also consolidate and streamline our whole billing process. This means we’re going to need to have our Members go in and update their profiles so we can kick off this new website with a clean set of data. Keep an eye on your emails and upcoming Club communication on how to do that in the coming weeks. Tied to the new website will be a new MACbranded mobile app that will also streamline the Member experience. The app will allow Members to make reservations, pay bills, check schedules, browse menus and more – all on the go. We’re also hoping to make the app be your access in and out of the garage, so keep an eye out for that added feature, too! These are all things we’ve been working on behind the scenes, and there are a lot of moving parts at play. All of it is aimed at having a safer, more secure building that you feel comfortable coming down to and enjoying. The MAC is on the move and has been since 1903. We came together as an all-men’s Olympic club originally and introduced our first female Member in 1988: Jackie Joyner-Kersee. In 2021, we have our first female President in Angie Minges. She takes office in May, and we know she’ll do a great job. Congratulations, President-Elect Minges! F

Wally Smith, General Manager Missouri Athletic Club

Due to West Clubhouse Food and Beverage closure in November, we have credited any unused minimums for December and the Membership classifications that have minimums baked into their dues. SECURITY The MAC has been busy continuing to implement new security and safety features at both Clubhouses over the course of the past several months. Wiring for new cameras was installed with the West Clubhouse Phase Two work in 2019 and early 2020, and the cameras are now up and fully operational both inside and outside the Clubhouse. They’re monitored 24/7 by the Downtown Clubhouse security desk and can also be viewed by Darrin Harnetiaux and the folks at Hackett Security. In Downtown St. Louis, the entire Downtown Clubhouse is also under 24/7 surveillance. In addition to the dozens of cameras installed throughout and around the Downtown Clubhouse, the Club has implemented cameras at the front of the building with a view of Washington Avenue. Additional cameras were installed down the 4th Avenue side heading north, along with in and around the outside of the garage, providing a peripheral view of the garage building. Upon entering the Downtown Clubhouse at the Lucas Street entrance, guests are also able to see some of the security footage that’s projected on a newly installed monitor in

the hallway near the security desk. New lights have been installed in between the parking garage and the Clubhouse building, ensuring the crosswalk and that section of Lucas Street are well-lit and easily accessible no matter the time of day. Uniformed police officers continue to greet people and ensure the safety of those crossing in between the garage and Clubhouse building for large events. Garage operations will be shifting in the coming months, with the addition of equipment that will further automate entering and exiting the garage. A new system will check license plates and take photos of drivers so the MAC security team is privy to who’s coming and going. It will also make things easier for those using the garage. The MAC administration and Downtown Security Task Force are continuing to explore efforts to maintain the security of the Clubhouse and the area around it. Members are encouraged to come visit and enjoy the variety of amenities available, including dining and fitness facilities. The Downtown Clubhouse is open and in full operation according to St. Louis City safety protocol. F

Total dues-paying Members of 2,174, down 238 from last year’s 2,412 The line of credit balance at the end of November was $75,000 Long-term bank debt of $6,314,000

Looking ahead, it is anticipated that December’s financial performance will be more favorable than budget despite the temporary closing of West’s indoor dining during one of the busiest times of the year. The Club’s Finance Committee, Board of Governors and senior management have been proactive in identifying strategies to ensure our financial stability. Rest assured, we have already implemented several of these strategies and have others in the wings if needed. Remember, your Club is open and provides exceptional value in a safe environment. Take advantage of dining specials, come to the Club for a socially distant tennis lesson, and browse our Pro Shops for the latest in workout gear. And don’t forget to introduce your friends and colleagues to the Club and receive $500 in Club credits for each referral! If you have any questions regarding the Club’s finances, please contact the Club’s Chief Financial Officer, Pam Roth, at 314-539-4400 or proth@mac-stl.org. F

In Memory of Helen Shopmaker or nearly 10 decades, Helen Shopmaker was a fixture in a variety of St. Louis organizations and clubs. One such club was the MAC, where she was a Member until her death on Dec. 15, 2021, at the age of 97. Helen was born July 24, 1923, in St. Louis to Louis and Jeannette Sher. She was sister to Donald and Byron, who survive her at 94 and 92 years old, respectively. Donald says she had “a long life… a good one.” “She was a hell of a bigger athlete than I ever was,” Donald recalls. He’s been a longtime Member of the MAC community – one of the longest on record. “Our father was a Member of the MAC for a long time, and he wanted to see my brother and me become Members, which we did,” he says. As a young woman, Helen attended University City High School and graduated from the University of Illinois, where she majored in Spanish. Helen taught at the university until she met and married her husband, Dr. Allen B. Shopmaker, and they started Clayton Small Animal Hospital. “When our father died [in 1974], his membership was turned over to Helen’s husband, Dr. Shopmaker,” Donald says. “She had [the membership] until she died.” Helen was an avid golfer, and she played regularly until shortly before her death. She could be spotted frequently on the course at St. Albans Country Club and in Florida in the winters. “Golf was a huge part of her life, and she loved it dearly,” Donald says. “She was pretty good and could hold her own. She didn’t hit the ball far, but she hit it straight.” Donald’s son, Edward, and Helen were close and golfed together regularly. “We have a place up in Michigan that our father bought in the 1930s,” he says. “When she went up there, she played golf and was a member

F

of the Holland Country Club. Before golf carts came into being, she would walk the 18 holes. She still played 18 holes at least into her 80s.” The Shopmaker and Sher families have been regulars at the MAC for decades. “We all love the Club,” Donald says. “My father loved to eat there.” When they weren’t caring for the pets of St. Louisans or golfing, Helen and Allen loved to go to flea markets. Helen enjoyed collecting political buttons, and her husband liked to look for swords. Donald notes that finding political memorabilia was one of Helen’s “greatest hobbies,” and a large percentage of her collection is on display at the Mercantile Library at UMSL. The remaining part of the collection will also go to UMSL, due to her passing. Though they spent much of their time in the St. Louis area, Helen and her husband loved to travel, particularly to Japan. They also enjoyed teaching English as a second language at the International Institute. Helen was heavily involved in Springboard to Learning, a St. Louis organization Donald says one of their relatives founded in the 1960s. According to the Springboard to Learning website, the organization was founded “to help students experience world-wide arts and cultures” and “envisions a future where all children are passionate, engaged learners who experience success.” Helen served on the board for many years and is listed as “President Emerita” on the organization’s website. When asked what he thought his sister would most like to be remembered for, Donald says her involvement in Springboard would likely be high on the list. “That was certainly one of her highlights for many years,” he says. Funeral services for Helen were private, and in lieu of flowers, the family asked that donations be made to Springboard to Learning. F

Hermann Trophy Kicked Back to Spring BAN Q U E T TO BE HEL D ON MAY 27

Presented by

Due to COVID-19 concerns, college soccer shifted from fall to a spring season. The action will kick off in early February and will conclude with the Men’s and Women’s College Cup May 13-17. Ten days after the national championship games, on May 27, the MAC will present the Hermann Trophy to the top male and female players in college soccer. Since 1986, the MAC has honored the top rising stars in soccer every January. In this unusual year, the 2021 banquet will be held in the spring for the first time. Some of the biggest names in the sport including Mia Hamm, Alexi Lalas, Tony Meola and Kelley O’Hara have won the top individual award in college soccer prior to achieving international stardom. Catarina Macario of Stanford, the winner of the previous two Hermann Trophies, appears to be the latest former winner poised to become the

next big star. In January, she signed a professional contract with Lyon and is preparing to make her mark with the U.S. Women’s National Team at this summer’s Olympic Games. Be on the lookout for more information about reservations to the Hermann Trophy banquet and follow the latest news on the candidates for this year’s award by following on Twitter @HermannTrophy or the website machermanntrophy.org. AT THE CLU B

Fred and Crystal's Wedding

Fred and Crystal Nelson

The day was April 23, 2009, and Fred Nelson remembers it like it was yesterday. He had been working at the Missouri Athletic Club’s security desk and would periodically stop by the front desk to talk to a fellow coworker, Crystal. “I used to go talk to her at the front desk all the time because our families are pretty much similar,” he says. “I’m sitting back working at the security desk one day, and she came back and gave me her phone number. She said, ‘I’m tired of you waiting to ask me for my phone number!’ and we started talking on the phone after that.” Crystal is an avid bowler, so they went to 14 F CHERRY DIAMOND

a bowling alley on their first date. But Fred didn’t quite know what he was getting himself into. “I’m very competitive,” she says. “Fred always says ‘what can’t you do?’ They continued dating, and a few years down the road, Fred decided to propose. “Crystal went to her mother’s house to drop her daughter off, and on the way back, she got pulled over for speeding, not knowing I was waiting at home to propose to her,” Fred remembers. “I was like ‘wow, she must’ve been rushing back to me!’” Both families were so excited for Crystal and Fred to get married, “probably more excited than we were,” Fred says with a laugh. “The rest is kinda history.” The two wanted a big wedding, and Crystal wanted to plan the whole thing, so she spent the next year figuring everything out down to the fine details. Some of their MAC family even helped, with Linda Soncasie in catering stepping in to help coordinate on the day of the wedding, and Rick McIntosh and his family catering the big day. Fred and Crystal were married in May 2011 – a month that turned out to be vastly unpredictable. It rained nearly every day up until their wedding day (the 21st), but it was an extremely hot day as Crystal prepared to make her entrance into the chapel. “Everybody who knows her knows she can’t stand to be hot,” Fred says. “On the rehearsal day, she told the lady, ‘I want that AC turned up high.’ The next day, the AC went out right when she was about to come down the aisle. She had this certain part of Whitney Houston’s ‘I Believe in You and Me’ where the doors were supposed to open, and you could just see the look on her face.” The Nelsons laugh about it now as they prepare to celebrate their 10th anniversary this year. “We’re best friends,” Fred says. “We have a lot of fun and have been entertaining each other during [the pandemic]. People say, ‘how can you work together?’ But when we’re at work, we really don’t see each other too much – just in passing.” “He’s really laid back, and I’m really outgoing,” Crystal says. “So we really balance each other out and are compatible in that way. We’ve been through the ups and downs together… We both lost a parent. Being there for each other makes those trials easier.” F

Max Shapiro and Margaret Junker different, and they made their way to the Big Apple over Labor Day weekend for the event. “We were going out with his mom and a friend the first night we got there, and he said he wanted to stop at a little restaurant before,” Margaret says. “We ended up in Central Park, and as we were crossing the Gapstow Bridge, I turned around and he was down on a knee. It was a more exciting weekend than I had planned.” The duo planned a big wedding for June 2020 but had to downsize to just six people due to the pandemic. They were wed on June 6 with just a few family members and Margaret’s maid of honor. They are planning a bigger celebration for July 2021 “if everything holds up,” Max says. When they’re not teaching at the MAC, Margaret and Max love to go bowling, travel, go to movies and enjoy meals at local restaurants. They also enjoy the MAC’s yearly employee appreciation baseball game, which both of them cite as a highlight of both their work and personal lives. “One of my favorite MAC specific memories was our very first employee appreciation baseball game in the summer of 2015,” Margaret recalls. “I was too scared to ask [Max] to go to the game with me so I asked my dad, and he brought his uncle. That was when I was able to tell my dad all about ‘this guy I liked at work’ and supposedly Max's uncle convinced Max that I was ‘something special’ that day. That's kinda what kicked off our relationship.” F

Engagement in Central Park Max Shapiro and Margaret (nee Junker) Shapiro grew up playing tennis at the same club in St. Louis. They didn’t know each other at the time but likely ran into each other on several instances. “All of our coaches knew both of us separately, so we had to have been in the same building several times,” Margaret says. They didn’t meet officially, though, until Margaret was hired as a tennis pro at the MAC in March 2015. Max, who also teaches at the MAC as the director of junior tennis, remembers first meeting her while working at a USTA clinic. “I thought she was cute and personable and knew how to handle herself at work,” he recalls. They played in a tennis tournament together, and Max remembers that it jumpstarted their relationship. “My first impression of him was that he had a heart of gold, but he was also a coworker so I didn't want to get ahead of myself,” Margaret remembers. “We were friends for a while but started dating in the fall of 2015.” As a couple, one of their traditions became traveling to New York every year for the U.S. Open. 2019 was no FEBRUARY 2021 F 15

Paying It FORWARD T

This past fall, the Missouri Athletic Club approved several changes to the Club's policies to encourage and reward our Members for bringing their friends, family and colleagues into the

MAC. Matt Burke, a Member who joined early last year, has taken full advantage of one of these programs and became the top proposer of 2020 by recommending several of his colleagues to join the Club.

L-R: JENNA SCHILER, KAYLEE RICHARSON 16 F CHERRY DIAMOND

Although Burke first joined the MAC in January of 2020, he has already become a well-known name around the Club. While he can be seen on the tennis courts, at events and in the restaurants, his real claim to MAC fame is proposing four new Members to the Club in his first year. After the Club reopened in May, he was quick to show off his Club to the young associates at Ameriprise Financial, taking them to play tennis and pickleball, introducing them to Membership at the monthly mixers and inviting them to the Associates' Rooftop Happy Hour in September. After that last party, his colleagues; Alex Ottinger, Jenna Schiller, Kaylee Richardson and Austin Laslo all decided to join the Club in October. Coincidentally, in the fall, the MAC had introduced the new Platinum Bonus referral campaign. This meant Burke received a $2,000 credit ($500 for each

new Member) to spend at the Club for each of the four new Members he proposed. The total was loaded onto a Platinum Card (pictured right) to be used for food and beverage, massage, personal training and more. "They’re all young executives, and as they’re getting their careers going, they need to start building their professional network...So as the guy who is getting them going in their career, I want to show them how you do this—how to be around successful people and network and work your way into a community," said Burke. To learn more about how to earn your Platinum Card, read the article to the right. In addition to the Platinum Card program, the MAC also enhanced the Platinum Partnership Program. Read below to discover how you can enjoy up to $1,200 annually when you lock in your Platinum Partner. F

Secure Your PA RT N E R S H I P STAT U S Enjoy up to $1,200 annually in reduced dues and Diamond Club benefits when you lock in your Platinum Partnership! F To form a Platinum Partnership, any current Member of the Club must also be the new Member's Proposing or Seconding Sponsor. Bring your potential Platinum Partner to the Monthly Membership Mixer, which takes place on the first Thursday of each month, to give them a taste of the Club. Contact the Membership Department at 314-539-4438 to learn more.

Platinum Cards will be sent out the month following approval of the referred Member. The Monthly Membership Mixer is the perfect place to introduce potential Platinum Partners to the Club. They will have the opportunity to interact with Membership and take a tour of the Clubhouse while enjoying complimentary appetizers, beer and wine. Planned Gifts Benefit the Missouri Athletic Club and MAC Foundations

Larry Absheer Director of Advancement 314-604-3890 labsheer@mac-stl.org Cynthia Goudy Director of Foundations 314-779-4715 cgoudy@mac-stl.org

For more than 100 years the Missouri Athletic Club has added value to the lives of its Members and their families. Looking to the future, we rely on the vision and generosity of our Members who have come to love the Club so much. A planned gift in your will or estate plan is a wonderful way to ensure that the MAC will continue to have the financial wherewithal to continue serving future generations and preserving its great traditions. Typically, Members name the MAC or one of its foundations in their will or trust and specify an exact dollar amount. But there are other ways to arrange for a gift to the MAC or one of its foundations when you pass away. A few examples: F A beneficiary designation on an IRA, 401k or 403b plan, or a life insurance policy F A transfer on death (TOD) designation on a savings, checking or brokerage account F A beneficiary deed on real estate F A charitable remainder trust

What Are the Next Steps? 1. Contact Cynthia Goudy, Director of Foundations, or Larry Absheer, Director of Advancement, to discuss how you and your family can be remembered forever at the MAC 2. Ask to be put in touch with a Member of the MAC’s Planned Giving Advisory Council to receive technical advice on estate planning 3. Let us know if you have named the MAC or one of our foundations in your will or estate plan so that we can welcome you as member of the MAC’s Legends Society.

We appreciate your generosity …

it matters!

Susan Storey Presents at the Business Development Group Meeting

MHC Discusses "When the Irish Invaded Canada" On March 23, the Military History Club will welcome Christopher Klein, author of "When The Irish Invaded Canada: The Incredible True Story of the Civil War Veterans Who Fought For Ireland’s Freedom." Just over a year after Robert E. Lee relinquished his sword, a band of Union and Confederate veterans dusted off their guns. These former foes, however, had no intention of reigniting the Civil War. Instead, they fought side by side to undertake one of the most fantastical missions in military history: to seize the British province of Canada and hold it hostage until the independence of Ireland was secured. In this talk, learn the outlandish, little-known story of the self-proclaimed Irish Republican Army that carried out five attacks on Canada known collectively as the Fenian Raids between 1866 and 1871. With the tacit support of the U.S. government, this motley group including a one-armed war hero, an English spy infiltrating rebel forces, and a radical who staged his own funeral managed to seize a piece of America’s northern neighbor, if only for a matter of days. Join the MAC's Business Development Group on Thursday, Feb. 18 as Susan Storey, a restructuring and crisis management specialist, presents “The Process of Restructuring and Turning Around an Organization – Managing through a Crisis." She will discuss the nuts and bolts of managing through a downturn that threatens the life of your business. Those nuts and bolts are specific tactics for managing cash, employees, lenders and vendors for companies whose future has become uncertain. Storey has helped manufacturers, distributors, retailers and service providers with revenues ranging from $1 million to $200 million. Her clients range from family-owned businesses and sole proprietorships to private equity-owned and public companies. Through 30 years of experience, she knows how to develop trust and confidence with all of the constituents: constituents who have become fatigued by poor performance and broken promises. Storey’s success has been based upon the development of reasonable timelines for realistic achievable financial projections. A successful turnaround addresses operations, the balance sheet and talent management. As she discusses each of these areas, she will establish how a sense of urgency coupled with an instant plan for stability is the first step of every turnaround. As Principal of Capital Solutions Group, Susan assists small to medium size businesses struggle through crises to regain profitability. Susan has been a partner in restructuring and turnaround management firms in Boston, Los Angeles and New York. Though primarily a consultant, Susan has also stepped in as interim management where the need exists. Her international experience was as an advisor to the Czech Ministry of Industry after the exit of Soviet control and managing the turnaround of two Czech companies. Sponsored by the World Bank and USAID, she was a trainer for government officials and agencies in Russia, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Poland and Romania. B Extrordinaire Gallery Helps Members "ReConnect with Nature" The MAC is pleased to announce the art exhibition "ReConnect with Nature" will be held at both Clubhouses during February and March of 2021. This exhibition highlights the talented artists at B Extraordinaire Gallery. B Extraordinaire Gallery, A Place for Artists to Share Art is an online gallery that provides a platform for local artists to share, inspire and sell their art. It also provides collectors, young or experienced, access to affordable original art. B Extraordinaire artists are committed to making art a part of daily life and strengthening the appreciation of original art in our St. Louis community and beyond. This exhibit seeks to represent what should be the main focus for this year. After the challenges of the last year, 2021 is a time to reshape, restore, and "Reconnect with Nature" and our place in it. Being in nature, living near nature, or even viewing nature in paintings can have positive impacts on our health and well being. Viewing nature produces positive emotions and calms our nervous systems and helps us to cultivate greater happiness, creativity, and resilience. Nature helps us understand we are part of and connected to something bigger than ourselves. "Our artists are thrilled with the opportunity to show their art 'live' at the MAC. We hope you enjoy the exhibit "Reconnect with Nature," their website announces. For more information, visit their website at bextraordinaire. com or their Facebook page. F
