T hank you for all your hard work in supporting our Club’s membership efforts in 2013, particularly through the Platinum Partnership

program. But even if you already have a Platinum Partner, that does not mean you can’t continue to invite prospective members to join. Interestingly, the most common reason new members cite for joining the MAC is “a member invited me to join.” Membership in the MAC offers numerous benefits and amenities, but often we forget the power of a simple invitation from someone they know and trust. There are excellent qualified prospective members just waiting for an invitation; please do them a favor and ask! We have a number of special events coming up that are a perfect opportunity to introduce prospective members to the Club, including the 250th Anniversary Celebration for St. Louis and monthly happy hours. In particular, don’t miss the Happy Hour on Feb. 19, bringing together some of the biggest movers and shakers in the area, including the “30 Under 30,” “40 Under 40” and “Most Influential St. Louisans” honorees. Think of someone you know who could benefit from the MAC, make the invitation and your Membership Development team are here to guide you the rest of the way.

How are those New Year’s resolutions holding up? If you’ve found your motivation or discipline dwindling, you’re not alone. For many people, the key to success is having a support system in place, and there’s no better place to find that support than at the MAC. See for yourself this month when we hold one of our longestrunning traditions of the Club – Good Fellowship Day on Feb. 22. While the event is hosted by the Downtown Athletic Department, you certainly don’t have to be an athlete to come out and enjoy the camaraderie this event offers. And who knows, it just might revive and reinvigorate those weakening resolutions. On page 26 of this issue, you’ll find a couple of financial reports from our CFO Larry Absheer. When I saw the first quarter report for the 2013-2014 fiscal year, a couple of things jumped out at me. The first was that departmental revenue was up 16 percent over the same period last year and 7 percent ahead of budget. That revenue comes from the events you attend, the classes you take, the dinners you enjoy, the parties and meetings you host and the rooms you book. And of course, this report doesn’t include

the numerous holiday parties and events that were hosted at the MAC during the month of December. While all these activities help maintain our Club’s financial health, they are also more meaningful than just a number on a spreadsheet. These figures represent more time spent at the Club, which results in more active and engaged members. That’s what truly keeps the MAC vibrant and successful. Active and engaged members are also the first to spread the word, sharing their experiences and inviting others to join. The numbers bear that out as well. In November 2013, we were up 35 total dues-paying members over the prior year. In addition, 562 of you took advantage of the Platinum Partnership Program, up from 275 in the same period in 2012. That’s a huge jump, but that also means there are plenty of you who have not yet found your Platinum Partner. If you know someone who could benefit from membership in the MAC, this program is the perfect opportunity, offering benefits and savings for both you and them. Keeping our financial numbers moving in the right direction also makes it possible for us to continue investing in both Clubhouses to

ensure we maintain the Platinumlevel status and service you’ve come to expect. We have several capital improvements scheduled in the coming months, from upgrading our hotel common areas to refinishing our tennis courts. Check out page 20 for details on these. We’ll be showing off the MAC this month with a big 250th birthday celebration for the city of St. Louis. (Bonus: it’s a great way to celebrate Valentine’s Day with your spouse or significant other.) This event is open to the public, so if you haven’t already, be sure to reserve your ticket and invite your friends. As we continue our tradition of highlighting our Clubs Within the Club, the CWC in the spotlight this month is the MAC Business Development Group. The BDG hosts monthly breakfast meetings at the Downtown Clubhouse, with recent topics ranging from online marketing to leadership to the “power of the underdog.” In addition to providing education and inspiration, these meetings offer valuable networking time for business professionals. Meetings are typically held the third Thursday of each month. Visit the MAC website (Social > CWCs > BDG) for more information on upcoming events or contact Larry Zielinski at 314-347-0807. I will see you around the Club! John Bugh President

Chefs in Training

The West Clubhouse played host to some young aspiring gourmets in January with a special Kids Cooking Class. Under the direction of the MAC culinary staff, participants had the chance to create their own threecourse meal, including salad, pasta and sundaes. After they were filled to the brim, they burned off some energy playing in the gym. The young attendees gave the evening five stars and were already asking when the next one was – so stay tuned for upcoming events for the junior chef in your family!

Try the New Barrel-Aged Cocktails The Jack Buck Grille will introduce two featured cocktails beginning in February with the addition of two Mini Whiskey Barrels from the Four Roses Distillery. Four Roses Bourbon will be featured in a traditional Manhattan paired with Antica Formula Vermouth and a dash of bitters, then allowed to age 4 to 6 weeks in its designated barrel. This aging process adds color and flavors of toasted oak, while soothing out the bourbon to become a mellow, well-balanced

cocktail. The second barrel will be a surprise! Come join us in the Downtown Jack Buck Grille for more details and a taste of our Barrel-Aged Cocktails.

Last month, I wrote about the city of St. Louis’ 250th anniversary celebration at the MAC on Feb. 14, brought to you by the “MAC Pack.” For the record, we will actually celebrate our Sestercentennial at the event, not that other Latin word I used so boldly, yet incorrectly, in my proclamation last month. Oops! But don’t let my poor grasp of Latin get in the way of a great time on the 14th; please be sure to reserve your spot for this party today! In this issue, we look at some of the capital improvements being made at the MAC. At the MAC, we talk a lot about Platinumlevel service, but it’s equally important to maintain Platinumlevel facilities. That doesn’t happen without ongoing investment in our clubhouses and amenities. We know that members have more choices than ever before in terms of places to work out, dine, socialize, stay and host events. So our Board and staff are in the middle of updating our strategic agenda and dreaming big and bold as we should. As a club, the MAC has all the talent, leadership, visionaries and raw economic power needed to propel us onward. We just need to be smart as we go attracting wealth, wisdom and workers within our leadership and staff ranks. Focusing on the future and continuous improvement ensures we remain the obvious and most attractive choice. And we obviously don’t operate in a vacuum – the MAC is an essential part of the St. Louis community and business landscape. Our Club’s success is interconnected with our city and county’s success, and we have plenty of reason to be excited about

12

the future. Just look at some of the improvements that have taken place in the Downtown area in the last five to 10 years. In 2013, the long-awaited Ballpark Village broke ground, and work has begun on the Gateway Arch grounds transformation, expected to be finished in 2015. Last year, SLU moved its School of Law into the downtown area, bringing a new crop of future professionals within walking distance of the MAC. Out West, Maryville University, sponsor of the 2013 Jack Buck Awards, continues to earn accolades, including “top overperforming university” for the second year in a row from U.S. News & World Report. After going dark for 10 years, the former Keil Opera House reopened its doors as Peabody Opera House in 2011, and through a recent partnership, the MAC is pleased to offer tickets to concerts and events before they go on sale to the public. Located in the heart of the Community Improvement District, the MAC directly benefits from ongoing efforts to create an attractive, accessible and flourishing Downtown. The changes go far beyond the superficial, however, focusing on attracting the type of talent, resources and businesses that put our city on the map. Recent initiatives to grow startup businesses are yielding incredible results, as seen by the fact that Missouri has moved up in the national rankings to be the 18th best place in America to start a business. One such program is the Arch Grants Business Plan Competition, which selects promising startups to receive $50,000 grants and supports the businesses as they transition to and remain working/growing in downtown

St. Louis. The MAC is excited to serve as the host venue for these unique awards again this year, welcoming talented entrepreneurs and new business to our great city. As they say, a rising tide lifts all boats, and continued investment in Downtown St. Louis should be seen as a direct investment in the future of the Club. The MAC has been a part of St. Louis history for the past 110 years, and we plan to be here for another 110. Our partnering efforts in making this a growing, thriving, vibrant community for residents, businesses and visitors once again is key with the MAC and our members. The MAC is “all in” on these initiatives in building this next chapter. If you are primarily a West Clubhouse user, I encourage you to stop by the Downtown location some time (maybe on Feb. 14?) and vice versa. The MAC is rather unique in the private club world in offering two separate locations, which only strengthens our ability to provide Platinum-level service, amenities and facilities for all of our members. As the updated Strategic Agenda comes into focus, we will begin sharing the various elements and highlighting ways in which you personally can play a role in all of our joint successes. These are exciting times with the MAC on the move and setting the stage for the next 110 years. Next month, we’ll start talking more about the number of opportunities for you in the hopper, along with an in-depth recap from the biggest party in town on Feb. 14. See you at the Club, Wally

Struggling to Keep Your Resolutions?

If the beginning of February finds you lagging in motivation or struggling to see progress, the MAC can help.

1) Enlist the help of a personal trainer.

3) Try a new workout.

If you’re struggling to reach your fitness goals, a personal trainer isn’t a luxury, it’s a necessity. Working out with a personal trainer, whether individually or in a small group, can help you achieve faster and better results, overcome plateaus and help you stay motivated. Half-hour and hour-long sessions are available, and with the MAC’s wide range of experienced trainers, you’re sure to find the right fit. To learn more or schedule a session, call 314-539-4434 (Downtown) or 314-539-4453 (West). Be sure to ask about our new client training packages.

Boredom can easily derail your fitness plans. Mixing up your workouts not only keeps it interesting but also challenges the body. If you’re a cardio junkie, maybe it’s time to give yoga or pilates a try. Both can improve core strength, flexibility, agility and endurance, while also offering mental benefits. The MAC offers a variety of class options; pay as you go for $7 each, or take unlimited yoga/ pilates classes for $30/month. Downtown • Yoga for All – Mondays – Noon • Mat Pilates – Wednesdays – Noon

2) Find a time that fits your schedule.

If you don’t make an appointment, your workout is likely to go out the window the second you get busy. MAC personal trainers can work around your schedule, and fitness classes are offered at a variety of times at both Clubhouses. For your convenience, the Downtown Clubhouse is also offering an additional Spin Class on Saturday mornings – Feb. 8, 22, March 8 & 22 at 9 a.m. (Be sure to come by and check it out on Good Fellowship Day on Feb. 22!)

West • Yoga – Mondays at 7:30 a.m.; Tuesdays at 9 a.m.; Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m. • Gentle Yoga – Wednesday – 8:15 a.m. • Slow Flow Yoga – Wednesday – 7 p.m. • Yoga for All – Sunday – 8:45 a.m.

For more ways the MAC can help you reach your goals, visit the website (Athletics > Fitness) or call 314-539-4482 (Downtown) or 314-539-4433 (West).

West Welcomes New Trainer The West Clubhouse has added Jason Lange to its lineup of experienced personal trainers. Jason holds a bachelor’s degree in recreation and master’s in kinesiology and is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist. With 10 years of experience, he has trained and transformed all types of clientele, and for the last six years has focused on evaluating and training 14

middle and high school athletes. Athletes training with Jason receive a well-rounded conditioning program that highlights increased skill in the areas of speed and agility, as well as overall total power. To set up an appointment with Jason, call the West Fitness Center at 314-539-4433.

Benefits of Metabolic Testing

Metabolic assessments aren’t just for those trying to lose weight or professional athletics. Your metabolic profile is as unique as your fingerprint – and it holds all the information needed to create a highly successful, personal training program. With the MAC’s metabolic assessments (or reassessments), you will better understand your resting and exercise metabolic rates, which can help you adjust your exercise and nutrition program to successfully meet your goals. Wednesday, Feb. 12 & 26 $100 for new assessments; $50 for reassessments West Clubhouse Call Paul Helfrich at 314-539-4453 to schedule an appointment.

WOMEN’S PRO DOUBLES SQUASH TOURNAMENT February 28 - March 2, 2014 2013-2014 WDSA Tour Nov. 9-10, 2013 Cincinnati Open Cincinnati Country Club

MAC Squash Pro Heidi Mather will be competing at the St. Louis Open this month.

Don’t miss the opportunity to view the sport of women’s squash doubles played at its highest level when the WDSA Tour comes to the Missouri Athletic Club. The MAC will host the first annual St. Louis Open Women’s Pro Doubles Squash Tournament on Feb. 28 – March 2. The participating pros will include MAC Head Pro Heidi Mather along with other members of the Women’s Doubles Association. In her first two tour appearances this season, Mather and her partner reached the semifinals. Now Mather is hungry for her first tour win. “My partner for this tournament and also the upcoming season is Vic Simmonds,” Mather says. “We played together in the U.S. Open in Philadelphia and are looking to go one better and make the finals of my home club’s event.” In its 2013-14 season, the WDSA Tour will include nine tournaments in major squash venues around the United States, putting the MAC in prestigious company. (See tour schedule in sidebar.)

In addition to the Pro Draw, there will be a Women’s Pro Am draw and a Mixed Pro Am draw open to all MAC squash program members, regardless of level, who pay a participation fee. The weekend will also include a kids’ squash clinic, led by some of the pros. The WDSA tour was founded in 2007 by Narelle Krizek (No.2 in the rankings). She will play with her sister Natarsha McElhinny (No.5 in the rankings), and they will be the No.1 seeds in the MAC tournament, as six top-ranked teams compete for $10,000. Krizek founded the tour to help promote and develop the game of women’s hardball doubles and to support local urban junior squash programs and breast cancer research. For more information about WDSA, visit www. wdsatour.com. Mark your calendars now for the tournament and make plans to come out to support the MAC and see some great squash pros.

PATRICK MULLINS AND MORGAN BRIAN NAMED 2013 HERMANN TROPHY WINNERS Mullins becomes first player in 20 years to score back-to-back Trophies

Trophy winners Morgan Brian and Patrick Mullins, with Taylor Twellman (center).

Morgan Brian is the first Virginia women’s player to capture the Hermann Trophy.

KSDK sports broadcaster Frank Cusumano introduced the finalists at a press conference before the banquet.

Soccer’s rising stars and fans gathered on Jan. 10 at the Missouri Athletic Club to learn the winners of the 2013 MAC Hermann Trophy, college soccer’s equivalent of the Heisman. The Club has been presenting the award since 1986 to the sport’s top male and female collegiate players. At a press conference prior to the banquet, the three male and female finalists were introduced, and Maryland’s Patrick Mullins and Virginia’s Morgan Brian were announced as the winners. Mullins became the seventh player to win back-to-back Hermann Trophies, joining players such as Al Trost and Mia Hamm. While it’s been 20 years since a player last accomplished this feat, it was little surprise considering Mullins’ 2013 season looked a lot like his prior season. For the second year in a row, he was named the Most Valuable Player of the ACC Championship and led Maryland to a College Cup appearance. The first runner-up for the men’s award was Notre Dame’s Harrison Shipp, followed by UCLA junior Leo Stolz. The Hermann Trophy capped off

Soccer co-chairs Governor Greg and Annie Beekman with two-time Hermann Trophy winner Patrick Mullins and coach Sasho Cirovski

a series of honors that Morgan Brian earned in the past year, including firstteam All-ACC and first-team NSCAA AllAmerican. The junior midfielder led the ACC in points and assists. First runnerup was 2012 Hermann Trophy winner and North Carolina senior Crystal Dunn, followed by UCLA’s Abby Dahlkemper. The featured speaker for the evening was St. Louis native, former Major League Soccer star and ESPN analyst Taylor Twellman. “Being from St. Louis, I grew up attending these dinners and have watched some of the best players the U.S. has ever produced walk through those doors,” said Twellman. “It’s been amazing to watch players who have won the MAC Hermann Trophy, and those who have been nominated, move on to successful professional careers.” Special thanks to the MAC Hermann Trophy sponsors: UMB Bank; Great Southern Bank; Lewis, Rice & Fingersh; Simmons First National Bank; Weiss Attorneys at Law; and World Wide Technology Inc.. TIPS FOR YOUR TENNIS SERVE

FROM KIM STEINMETZ, MAC TENNIS DIRECTOR The serve and return of serve are the two most important shots in tennis. The following tips come from former worldclass player Jeff Salzenstein. I was coached by his father, Dick, and had the opportunity to see and play with Jeff when he was just 12 or so years old. He impressed me then with his determination, enjoyment of the game and playing skills. He continues to enjoy tennis and is now imparting his knowledge to others. Since I agree with his advice in full, I’m happy to pass it along. If you improve your serve, it will take your game to the next level. The five most important things to address are the grip, toss, stance, trophy position and finish. Grip: The best grip is the continental grip or a variation on it. You can move the grip slightly either direction. For a flatter serve, move it slightly toward the eastern forehand grip, and for more spin, move your grip the other direction towards backhand. Ball Toss Position: For a flat serving right hander, you want to have the toss slightly to the right of your body and forward into the court. In order to hit a serve with more spin, you should toss the ball more overhead and to the left for a righty. 18

Stance: Your stance should allow you to jump up at the ball powerfully and comfortably. There are several variations; for example, Roddick has a narrower stance, but Federer has a wider stance. You should use a stance that you feel gives you the most power and stability. Trophy Position: This greatly affects how well and consistently you will hit your serve. You need a good shoulder turn to produce the power you want. Your toss arm should be straight and your fingers on the tossing hand should reach as far upward as they can, as if you’re trying to shoot lightning bolts out of your fingers. Your racket should be at an upward angle and the racket strings should be facing slightly downward to produce the spin you need to control and place the ball. Finish: Your finish involves all of the previous steps and your contact, because if those aren’t correct your finish won’t be either. Remember to watch the ball all the way through contact; after contact you should have the leg you are not landing on kick out behind you. This should happen naturally as you jump forward into the court. Djokovic does this more than any other top player, helping him get more power. Your back leg should come forward naturally as you finish your forward movement. Make these five changes and watch as your serve quickly becomes your favorite stroke.

Salute to the St. Louis Fire Department As 2014 marks the 100th anniversary of the fire that destroyed the original Downtown Clubhouse, the MAC will host a special event to honor the St. Louis Fire Department for their efforts to save the building and their work in the years since. On the evening of March 8, 1914, 135 members and guests were registered at the Club, most sleeping upstairs, when the fire broke out. MAC management and staff worked to wake guests, and St. Louis firemen battled the blaze for more than 12 hours. When they were finally able to enter the building the next day, they found 30 dead; seven more people died days later when a portion of the west wall collapsed onto St. Louis Seed Company. While the exact cause of the fire was unknown, the tragedy spurred officials to investigate the overall safety of St. Louis’ public buildings, especially hotels. This investigation resulted in an improved and more enforceable building code designed to increased public safety. Join us as we recognize the St. Louis Fire Department and take a moment to remember those who lost their lives. The event is set to include a presentation from a local historian and remarks from St. Louis Fire Chief Dennis Jenkerson. History buffs won’t want to miss the exhibits beforehand, which will include photos and accounts from the 1914 fire, as well as firefighting equipment and gear from throughout the years. If you have history from that time to share, in the form of stories, photos or artifacts, please contact Jim Wilson at 314-539-4488 or jwilson@mac-stl.org. Financial Reports Available

The audited financial statements of the Missouri Athletic Club for the years ended August 31, 2013 and 2012, are now available in the Club’s Accounting and Finance Department. Any member desiring a copy of the financial statements may request a copy from the Chief Financial Officer, Larry Absheer. The consolidated financial statements include the accounts of the Missouri Athletic Club (the “Club”), its wholly owned subsidiary, MAC Redevelopment Corp. (the “Corporation”), and the Missouri Athletic Club Preservation Foundation (the “Foundation”), a related party under common control. The Club achieved net revenues of $7,003,304 during 2013. This was down from $7,013,036 in 2012. Included in net revenues are membership dues ($7,100,397 for 2013 and $7,238,828 for 2012), sales ($9,047,757 for 2013 and $8,376,790 for 2012), initiation fees ($100,800 for 2013 and $46,850 for 2012), and cost of sales and departmental expenses ($9,245,650 for 2013 and $8,649,432 for 2012). Nondepartmental expenses totaled $7,789,061 in 2013, compared to $7,882,203 in 2012. Non-operating income (expense) was $2,272,791 in 2013, compared to ($643,810) in 2012. Members’ equity increased to $6,062,170 at the end of 2013, compared to $4,575,136 at the end of 2012. The Club ended 2013 with $86,254 of unrestricted cash on its balance sheet, compared to $107,036 at the end of 2012. The Club’s long-term debt at the end of 2013 was $6,704,288 and the Corporation had long-term debt of $1,330,732. Kids In The Middle

Divorce Hurts. Kids In The Middle Helps.

With statistics showing that nearly half of all marriages end in divorce, one million new children each year are affected by the challenges of parental separation, divorce and remarriage. They often find it difficult to cope. They suffer emotionally and feel split loyalties between their parents. But one St. Louis organization is working to help create a brighter and healthier future for these children and their families. Kids In The Middle (KITM) focuses on helping families thrive both during and after divorce through counseling, education and support. The agency opened its doors in 1977, providing group counseling for children whose parents were separated, divorced or remarried. Since then, the services offered have been expanded to include the whole family. In addition, KITM offers a School Outreach Counseling program to provide services to children and families at a variety of public and private schools in the City of St. Louis. “I brought my older son to KITM years ago when his father and I separated,” shared one KITM parent. “It was the place where he had the security to begin exploring the complex emotions any child faces while his family is changing shape. It’s where he learned how to name those emotions, sort them, and choose how to behave in the face of them.”

While many families initially come to KITM during the divorce process, the services offered can be helpful even after many years have passed, providing a safe, confidential and objective place to work through family transition issues. KITM offers individual and group counseling for both children and adults, as well as whole family counseling and workshops. As a first step, a therapist sits down with one or both parents to better understand the issues affecting the family and determine what services will best meet their needs. All services are provided on a sliding scale based on income, and no one is turned away due to ability to pay. The organization also works to spread its expertise within the community by offering workshops and providing professional training to therapists, counselors, court staff, social workers, teachers, attorneys and others working with children and families affected by divorce. Visit www.kidsinthemiddle.org to learn more about the organization, and check out the sidebar for upcoming events. Kids In the Middle is one of the MAC Charitable Society for Children’s three selected charities for 2014. You can provide your support through a one-time or monthly donation; download a donation form from the MAC website (Social > CWCs > Charitable Society for Children).
