The new year is finally here! Congratulations to all for another outstanding year at the Club.
As of the writing of this column, we have 2,546 Members vs. 2,406 Members at the beginning of the year. I am continuously impressed by the work our Membership committee and department put in to ensure we fill the Club with exceptional Members.
As I look back at 2022, I can’t help but reminisce over some of the extraordinary and successful events the Missouri Athletic Club has hosted. The MAC Speakers Series, particularly with our own Member Bob O’Loughlin, the Jack Buck Awards and Wrestling Night are just a few of the outstanding events I attended, and I look forward to attending them once again in 2023.
Knowing that athletic is our middle name, I want to encourage all Members to get involved with our athletic and fitness departments. Through classes, leagues and personal training, MAC staff members are sure to keep us all on track to achieve our 2023 fitness goals. For those who were busy preparing for the holidays, I encourage you to unwind by getting a massage, manicure, pedicure or haircare service at either of our Clubhouses.
For our newer Members, you have picked an excellent time to join the Club! This year we will celebrate the MAC’s 120th anniversary. The yearlong celebrations will start on a high note at the Meet Me at the MAC 120th Anniversary Gala. To learn more about the gala and the Club’s anniversary theme, see page 16.
In addition to the Club’s anniversary, we are starting off the year strong with the Hermann Trophy Awards on Jan. 6. Since St. Louis is a soccer city, this is the perfect event to attend with your future soccer stars. The Charitable Society for Children will hold their Check Presentation event on Jan. 21. There, the 2023 charities will be announced. To finish out the month, Members can register for the Cornhole Tournament on Jan. 28. Looking ahead to February, an MAC Speaker Series event featuring Taylor Twellman is a fantastic event to continue the soccer presence at the MAC and to welcome St. Louis City SC to the Club. Many Members look forward to the Annual Boxing Championship, so be sure to mark your calendars for Feb. 23. Lastly, Good Fellowship Day on Feb. 25 is the perfect event for Members to show their spirit and camaraderie for the MAC.
The MAC Sports Foundation is orchestrating fundraising of $150,000 to renovate the Youth & Family Center gym floor a few blocks from our Downtown Clubhouse, as many of you saw featured in the October Cherry Diamond. To date, the Sports Foundation has contributed $50,000 toward this project, which inspired The American Hellenic Foundation to match that gift and expand the project to $200,000 to additionally refurbish the main entrance and lobby. To date, individual donations from MAC Members have reached $13,350, and the Sports Foundation is working to finalize an
additional $50,000 from corporate donors. Assuming those donations are finalized, we will need to raise an additional $36,650 to achieve our goal. If you are interested in donating, visit mac-sportsfoundation.org.
As a premier club, the MAC continues to enhance many areas throughout both Clubhouses to ensure Members are utilizing state-of-the-art facilities. Recently, the men’s locker room renovation was completed. Other outstanding improvements include renovations to the West Pro shop and the women’s locker room.
As another holiday season has passed, I want to extend appreciation to the MAC staff. The staff continues to provide outstanding service to Members and guests, especially during the holiday season. Thank you to all Members who contributed to the Employee Holiday Fund. The staff was thrilled to receive their holiday bonus at the employee holiday party. Over the holidays Members and Guests have been extremely complimentary of MAC staff. One quote that stuck with me reads as follows:
“A BIG THANK YOU to you, your staff, and the chef for a great evening. The room worked great as we had plenty of room for our group. The table settings were very festive with the traditional red and green. The chef did a great job, my salmon was done to perfection and the filets looked good. I did not hear anyone complain. Complements to your choice of a piano player. She was very good. Let’s book her for next year. Thanks again for a great evening. Have a Merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year.”
It makes me proud to be part of a Club that values the best staff and exceptional Members. I want to extend an additional thank you to Sydney Gorman, the West Clubhouse’s distinguished employee.
Sydney Gorman
Title: Sports Camp Coordinator and Server

Sydney, thank you for your year-round dedication and service to our youngest Members of the Club and for ensuring we receive outstanding service no matter where we dine at the West Clubhouse.
Happy New Year to you and yours! See you at the Club as we start 2023 the best way we know how, at the most exceptional athletic club!

Though the “giving season” is over, the Youth & Family Center (YFC) is still taking donations! At the beginning of 2022, the MAC Sports Foundation pledged $50,000 to kick off an effort to raise $200,000 for the installation of a new gymnasium floor at the YFC in Downtown St. Louis. We are making steps toward this goal with $113,350 raised at the time of writing. The YFC does so much great work in our community, and this is a wonderful opportunity to make a big impact in our downtown neighborhood. Our two organizations share a vision that athletics has the power to make a positive difference in the lives of our young people. The YFC works to help local youth, seniors and families achieve
their full potential, bringing the community together through fellowship and promoting a healthy lifestyle –values that the MAC shares.
Downtown St. Louis faces challenges, but if we start making improvements one block at a time, the goal of making a meaningful impact is attainable. I encourage any business or individual interested in directly impacting the lives of our downtown neighbors to contribute to the goal. To the MAC Members who have already donated — thank you for your support! To donate, visit mac-sportsfoundation.org. Contact Kara Kelpe at kkelpe@mac-stl.org to get involved.
I also want to give a big thank you to our Members for their generosity in donating to the Employee Holiday Fund. The season was busy and MAC employees worked hard putting in extra hours to make the holidays magical for so many Members and their families. Our employees all enjoyed a merrier Christmas due to your generosity, so thank you, thank you, thank you on behalf of all our great staff! Happy New Year!
See you at the Club!

STOYER SELECTED AS PCMA PRESIDENT MAC MEMBERSHIP
On Tuesday, Dec. 6, the Professional Club Marketing Association (PCMA) announced Rodney Stoyer, CMP as the 2023 PCMA President after a unanimous nomination. Stoyer is the Director of Membership at the Missouri Athletic Club.
“It is an honor to be chosen as the Nationwide President of the Private Club Marketing Association (PCMA) for 2023. Except for 2020, when I participated in the virtual conference, I have attended every
national conference of the organization since 2016. Throughout my years at the conference, I have formed many friendships, some from other countries. Part of what led to my nomination was my involvement in starting the Greater St. Louis Chapter of PCMA, which I also presided over as President in 2019. The local PCMA chapter is a fantastic group of Membership Directors and Marketing/ Communications leaders from most private clubs in St. Louis and other locations in Missouri. Being a Certified Membership/ Marketing Professional was a criterion for nomination, along with my tenure within the organization and involvement on the Education Committee, helping to craft
conference education and restructuring the PCMA Certification Programs that will launch in 2023,” said Stoyer.
Stoyer has served on PCMA’s Education Committee, has been engaged in the St. Louis Chapter as Membership Chair, Secretary, VicePresident and President and has participated in several PCMA workshops focused on enhancing the City Club experience.
“I look forward to this year helping to lead the organization and my peers in the ‘Club Membership Business.’ The culmination will be the annual conference in September held in Houston, Texas. I take great pride in representing the Missouri Athletic Club in this endeavor.”

Happy New Year! As we start the new year, many will be reviewing their portfolios. You may be talking with your broker/advisor about returns but do they talk with you about risk? Returns are a constant theme, but risk is just as important to discuss and is always ever present in the financial markets (and in life itself).
Risk can be defined in different ways. One way in the investing world is called “standard deviation,” which is a fancy way of saying how much do returns vary around the average over a given period.
Risk of ruin or major capital loss at the wrong time is another way to view risk. If one retires and loses half the value of their portfolio, which happened between late 2007 and early 2009 if one were invested 100% in US stocks, one’s retirement could be truly ruined if they had to take a big chunk out during that time.
As mathematician and investor Ed Thorp said, “understanding and dealing correctly with the trade-off between risk and return is a fundamental, but poorly understood, challenge faced by all gamblers and investors…People mostly don’t understand risk, reward and uncertainty.” According to Thorp “people tend to make the error of seeing patterns or explanations when there aren’t any, as we’ve seen from the history of gambling systems.”
Mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot said, “the market is very risky—far more risky than if you blithely assume that prices meander around a polite Gaussian (normal distribution) average...Unlike a broker, most investors do not care about ‘average’ returns. For them, the rare, outof-average catastrophes loom larger… The ultimate fear is financial ruin.”
How does one protect against risk? The most important is to diversify across asset classes. Besides diversifying in stocks around the world and other “factors,” we believe shorter to intermediate bonds, including short-term US government debt, protects portfolios when uncertainty increases. Peter Bernstein and Aswath Damodaran (Prof at NYU) wrote “staying rich requires an entirely different approach from getting rich. It might be said that one gets rich by working hard and taking big risks, and that one stays rich by limiting risk and not spending too much.”
As Mandelbrot found, “at short time frames prices vary wildly, and at longer time frames they start to settle down.” It is important to consider risk when investing.
If your broker/advisor is not discussing risk with you and you’d like to explore further, please give us a call.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT LEONARD TOENJES
Glen Echo Country Club President and native St. Louisan Leonard Toenjes, CAE (Certified Association Executive), is a Member of both the Missouri Athletic Club and Glen Echo Country Club (GECC). Duality is a common theme in Toenjes’ life. His dual passions for music and construction as well as his involvement with both Clubs have enriched his life.
Toenjes has been an MAC Member since 1986 and has also enjoyed membership at GECC since 2011. For the past five years, he has been the President of GECC.
“It has been such an honor for me as a native St. Louisan to have the opportunity to serve as President of Glen Echo the last few years,” Toenjes said. “Of all the things I’ve done, it’s just been a great honor to be a part of preserving and growing that great Club and tangentially helping the MAC.”
In his professional capacity, Toenjes is the President of the Missouri Chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC), but his path to this position was atypical.
Toenjes describes his college transcript as a “mish-mash.” After graduating from Saint Louis University High School in 1971, he immediately began attending Washington University’s music school. Once he realized he “was never going to be John Lennon,” he dropped out, but with determination, he entered a carpentry apprenticeship program. After his first day of class, his wife, Jean, who he has now been married to for 50 years, could tell he had “found his passion.”
After graduating from the St. Louis Carpenters Joint Apprenticeship Program, he worked as a carpenter for approximately eight years and then became a teacher at the Apprenticeship Program. He took classes at UMSL and the University of Missouri Extension Service to earn his vocational teaching certificate. He then rose to Coordinator of the Apprenticeship Program before becoming the Director of Training for AGC. Once the President of AGC retired, Toenjes moved into that position. When taking this role, he received his CAE through the American Society of Association Executives.
Toenjes is also the Chairman of the Missouri Workforce Development Board. He was appointed to the Board by Governor Jay Nixon. Governor Mike Parson appointed him to Chair of the Board in 2020.
“The Board’s challenge is to try to communicate industry needs back to the government,” Toenjes said. “Missouri is number three in the nation as far as registered apprentices. We’re starting to see the apprenticeship model grow and that’s leading businesses to the state.”
Part of Toenjes’ work on the Board includes changing public perception of trade schools.
“When I dropped out of college, quite frankly, my parents were very disappointed. But today, the biggest success, is that now people have a better image of apprenticeship being a different path than college but nothing less than,” he said.
Toenjes’ entire career has been rooted in construction, and he said it isn’t dissimilar to music.
“Construction requires both physical strength and cognitive abilities,” just as music requires physical skill as well as intellectual abilities. “Construction truly is an art of building, just like music is an art,” he said.
When he’s not enjoying art, Toenjes can be found enjoying the MAC Downtown Clubhouse’s steam room and workout facilities. Keisha Burns and Andrew Francis, fitness staff employees, put a program together for him, and he has stuck to it. Toenjes can also be found on GECC’s golf course hopefully twice a week, but no matter which Clubhouse he visits, he said the people are what make this partnership special.
“The partnership has matured to the point now where it is just about people being people and Members being Members and those relationships are solid. That has been the greatest part about it,” Toenjes said. “It’s such a unique and special opportunity. I don’t think you’re going to find a relationship like that or an opportunity like that anywhere else in the St. Louis marketplace. Members have the opportunity to participate in two historic Clubs and really not feel like you’re a Member of two Clubs, but it’s almost like you’re a Member of one special group of people.” F

MEET ME AT THE MAC
Celebrating the 120th Anniversary of the Club Throughout 2023
In 2023, the Missouri Athletic Club will celebrate the 120th anniversary of its grand opening. The Club’s founding coincided with a pivotal time in St. Louis history, and since then, the MAC has continued to play an influential role in the St. Louis community.
On September 13, 1903, the MAC strategically opened its doors before St. Louis made history for hosting two major international events: the 1904 World’s Fair and the Olympics. Dignitaries from around the world attended these events and stayed at the MAC. Nearly 10,000 people, including many great names of that time, filed through the building and inspected its splendid fixtures and decor. Among the guests were Mayor Rolla Wells and President D. R. Francis of the World’s Fair. During the Olympic Games, MAC athletes competed in boxing, wrestling, water polo, swimming and track.
Even prior to the Club’s opening, companies desired association with the MAC. Trorlicht, Duncker & Renard Carpet Company purchased an ad in the first Missouri Athletic Club Journal” published in August 1903. The carpet company boasted about their retail space’s location “on the corner directly across from the Missouri Athletic Club.” In the same publication, John Haig & Co. Ltd., based in Markinch, Scotland, touted their connection to the MAC with an ad reading, “Barley Cream Old Scotch Whisky
specially selected and bottled for The Missouri Athletic Club.” Today, companies still yearn to have their name affiliated with the MAC.
When people think back to the 1904 World’s Fair, they associate it with the famous movie, musical and catchy song by the same name, Meet Me in St. Louis. The theatrical performance is set in 1903 with the main characters looking forward to attending the World’s Fair. Drawing from that famous line and remembering the Club’s rich history and longstanding role in St. Louis, Meet Me at the MAC is the ongoing theme for the 120th anniversary of the Club.
Throughout 2023, the MAC will honor the history of the Club’s opening date and the generations of extraordinary Members that made the Club what it is today. All Members are invited to Meet Me at the MAC all year long to celebrate the Club’s 120th anniversary at social, dining, athletic and fitness events. The gala on Feb. 11 will kick off the lineup of celebratory festivities. Stay updated on all anniversary celebrations through the MAC in a Minute e-newsletter, mac-stl.org and social media. In the Club’s 120 years of existence, exceptional Members joined to connect in the spirit of excellence, service and tradition of the Club. Visit mac-stl.org/History to learn more about the MAC’s history.
MAC ATHLETICS
TAKE ON THE CARDIO TENNIS CHALLENGE
Cardio Tennis is a great introduction to the sport without the pressure of competition. For intermediate players, Cardio Tennis can be a wonderful tool to help sharpen skills to lengthen rallies and end points. For the advanced player, Cardio Tennis is the best way to train the legs and lungs for tough competition in matches and tournaments.
Cardio Tennis challenges players in so many ways — running, moving side to side, stretching and more. Heart rates will jump as participants go through high-intensity segments followed by recovery. Although intense, players will enjoy socializing and having fun working with and against one another.
Coach Max and Daniel run a fast-paced, high-energy class where sweating, having fun and meeting new people are guaranteed. Come out and try Cardio Tennis on Fridays at 10 a.m. at the West Clubhouse.
This fun, group activity features different drills to give players of all abilities a high-energy workout. Cardio Tennis on Fridays includes a quick warm-up and then different drills and games like Triples, Two-&-Take-Over and Rush’n’Crush! More Cardio Tennis classes are available with Daniel during the week.
Carolyn Kramer (C.K.) runs several Cardio Tennis classes
throughout the week during the day, in the evening and on the weekends, using, what she calls, “the famed cardio balls!” Kramer’s classes range from six to eight players, but they can have as many as 12 while making use of agility ladders and additional cardio stations. “Cardio balls” are used to ensure that the players’ level is not a determining factor in the number of calories burned. “Cardio balls” are low-compression orange balls that children use, but their usefulness for Cardio Tennis is undeniable. They create longer rallies, allow more shots to be run down and allow a mixture of levels to participate on the same court. Finally, upbeat music is an absolute must in Kramer’s cardio classes. It helps to keep feet moving while playing a point, rotating sides and taking a breather. For more information visit mac-stl.org/Athletics or contact Scott Stutz at sstutz@mac-stl.org.
BOB BARNES SILVER RACQUET
TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP
The 12th Annual Bob Barnes Silver Racquet Tennis Championship was played at the end of October with much success, especially for players Debbie Holley and Marvin Bohnenkamp. After four rounds with various partners, Holley and Bohnenkamp had won the most games, so each chose a partner for a final super tiebreaker to determine the 2022 Champion! As those four prepared to play, other participants had a photo shoot before they watched the final 15 points. Attendees were not disappointed with the action! Bohnenkamp and Dean Williams won 10-5 against Holley and John Gorman to crown Bohnenkamp the 2022 Champion!
Over $2,700 in donations were raised by competitors for the Missouri Athletic Club Charitable Society for Children. Thanks to all, including Stan Musial Grille servers for a great buffet, tennis pro staff, Jarid King and Nat Walsh for their support, and, of course, all the fantastic competitors!

Personalized Blood Flow Restriction Training at SSM Health Physical Therapy
Injury, age or poor physical condition can prevent you from gaining muscle mass. A new technique called Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) training may help you increase strength with low-intensity exercise that puts less stress on your joints.
How does BFR Training work?
A certified BFR physical or occupational therapist places a cuff around your arm and/or leg during exercise. It is attached to a compression pump (similar to that used to take blood pressure). The cuff inflates, keeping blood in the muscle and temporarily preventing its flow from the area.
A personalized pressure reading is performed to ensure safe training. The amount of pressure applied will depend on your physical condition, strengthening needs and therapy goals.
During your session, you will perform various exercises, including strength training and aerobic conditioning. As muscles relax and contract, the device maintains constant pressure, allowing you to:
• Achieve overall strength gains
• Do fewer repetitions
• Enhance muscle growth
• Use lighter weights
What Are The Benefits Of BFR Training?
This treatment may help:
• Increase muscle size (hypertrophy) and strength
• Improve cardiovascular capacity
• Decrease joint/tissue stress
Is BFR Training Right For You?
BFR therapy has been shown to be beneficial for:
• Athletes
• Individuals with limited or restricted mobility
• Post-operative rehabilitation patients or those dealing with pain issues
• Patients seeking pre-surgical strengthening
SSM Health Physical Therapy’s certified BFR therapists will expertly customize BFR training as part of your therapy to achieve your specific needs and goals.
FOR MORE INFORMATION, CONTACT: SSM Health Physical Therapy - MAC West Clubhouse. Call 314.822.3205 or stop by the clinic for assistance scheduling. We look forward to serving the needs of you and your family!

The Missouri Athletic Club fitness staff can help determine fitness and wellness goals for Members through metabolic assessment. The active test will explain what heart rate zone is needed to burn carbs for endurance training, burn fat for body composition and the amount of cardio needed. The resting metabolic test will explain how many calories are burned in a day at rest. The two tests help determine calorie restrictions or additions necessary to achieve fitness and wellness goals. The combination provides optimal results!

PAST PRESIDENT’S DINNER MAC Leaders Celebrate Another Year
On Tuesday, Dec. 6, the Missouri Athletic Club’s Past Presidents met in the Downtown Clubhouse Art Lounge for the annual Past Presidents’ Dinner. It was a joyous evening as MAC leaders caught up with one another over cocktails and dinner, celebrating their time with the Club throughout the years.
Holidays at the MAC
The Missouri Athletic Club was filled with cheer this holiday season! Members and Associates kicked off December festivities with cocktails and mingling at the Membership Mixer and the annual Associates’ Spirit of Giving Holiday Party. Jolly ol’ St. Nick stopped by the Downtown Clubhouse to share drinks with Members at Cocktails with Santa, while the Apollos sang Christmas carols.
Each year, the annual Breakfast with Santa brings joy to Members’ friends and family. Mr. and Mrs. Clause visited the Downtown Clubhouse on Dec. 3, 10 and 17 to pose for photos and hear children’s Christmas wishes. Attendees lined up for a delicious breakfast buffet and sang along to Christmas carols led by the Apollos. With the lobby decorated to the hilt, trains running and our fabulous gingerbread house display, the Clubhouse was filled with holiday spirit. Santa and Mrs. Clause spread holiday cheer at both Clubhouses, as they also visited the West Clubhouse for Brunch with Santa and Santa’s Workshop.
Employee Holiday Fund
Thank you to our generous Members who contributed to the Employee Holiday Fund and the Governors who served at the employee holiday lunches in November and December. The MAC staff appreciates your selfless giving!
