LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT 00°, 101°, 102°… it is officially summer in St. Louis! The pool is open, youth summer camp programs are in full swing at the West Clubhouse, and 288 MAC Puffins (ages 3-5), Penguins (ages 6-18) and Divers are participating on the Club’s Swim and Dive teams. As of this writing of this column, the Cardinals are in first place and the Jack Buck Grille is the place to be for all your pregame festivities and post-game celebrations. The Missouri Room continues to be the premier place in town to host a wedding celebration. Needless to say, it is a very busy and exciting time of year at the MAC. In June, the Club’s four standing committees: Membership, Governance, Planning and Finance kicked off their work for the coming year. Thank you to my fellow Governors who are leading these important committees and to the Members who are stepping up to serve and provide their input. I am very pleased to report that many new faces have joined our committees. If you are interested in learning more about the Club and its governance and operations, serving on a committee is a great place to start. Although the committees are full for the year, we keep a “running list” of potential candidates for future years. Please let one of the Governors or Gena Willis know if you are interested and your name will be added to the list. In addition to the four standing committees, the work of the Civic Engagement, Brand Strategy and Architecture task forces formed last year will continue. The Governance Committee has formed a task force to study and review our Club “house rules” to make sure that the rules and regulations for both Members and hotel guests at both Clubhouses and in our various dining facilities and meeting spaces are up to date and consistent with our new Vision and Mission statements. Details and outcomes from the work of these very important task forces will emerge in the coming months. In July, we celebrate our nation’s birthday and the freedom and liberty that defines the American way of life. Once again, the Fair St. Louis celebration will be back downtown under the Arch starting on Saturday, July 2, and will culminate with the spectacular riverfront fireworks display on the evening of July 4. The MAC will participate in the annual America’s Birthday Parade (this year’s theme is “Let Freedom Ring!”) on Saturday, July 2. The Sportsman’s Club on the fourth floor will be open for breakfast and parade libations. Please join us for an outstanding day of fun and fellowship at the Downtown Clubhouse. As I previewed in this space last month, the work on the newly remodeled 1903 Dining Area is well underway. Thus far, there have been no significant “surprises” and the project remains on schedule. I am also happy to report

1

that we received notice that the furniture for the Jack Buck Grille has been shipped. Upon its arrival and installation in the newly remodeled space, you can look forward to an official “Grand Reopening” celebration. Chef Bart and his team are working on new and innovative menus for the Jack Buck Grille which will be unveiled at the Grand Reopening. If you are like my family, you are likely in the process of completing your summer vacation plans or maybe looking forward to a weekend getaway in the fall. As you are making your travel plans, please keep in mind the wonderful and unique opportunities and access that your MAC Membership provides to dozens of reciprocal clubs across the United States and the world. The Los Angeles Athletic Club, the Union League Club and University Club in Chicago, the Detroit Athletic Club, the New York Athletic Club, the Harvard Club in Boston and the Union League of Philadelphia are a few of the reciprocal clubs that offer overnight accommodations and phenomenal and first-class dining opportunities and meeting spaces. A full list of the reciprocal clubs and the process for obtaining a letter of introduction can be found under the Membership tab on the MAC website. You can also call our Membership Department at 314-539-4486 for assistance with reciprocal club introductions. Here at the Club, we have an exceptional group of staff members that work diligently to provide the best club experience possible. Each quarter, the Human Resources department recognizes one Downtown and West employee for their outstanding efforts. To honor the incredible staff, I will be highlighting employees who have received the distinguished employee award and other dedicated employees. Geraldine Garza Title: Front Desk Clerk Start Date: 5/24/2004 Favorite Personal Activity: Fishing What do you like most about the Club? Interacting with my coworkers, Members and the great employee benefits. Thank you for always greeting Members and guests at the Downtown Clubhouse with a smile, Geraldine! Your hard work is noticed and greatly appreciated. It is a great time to be a Member of the MAC and to enjoy all the privileges and amenities of your Membership. I look forward to seeing you at the Club!

MAC FOUNDATIONS CORNER

Leaving a Legacy

Anchor Your Family’s Legacy at the MAC Membership at the MAC is a family thing. Countless Members have grown up in the club and their families have been enjoying club life together at the MAC for as long as anyone can remember. Indeed, the MAC membership is one big family. Hundreds of our Members have been Members for decades. Many are second, third or even fourthgeneration members. Membership at the MAC is a multi-generational family experience. Because the MAC experience has been such a significant part of the lives of so many of our families, more and more of our Members are deciding to remember the MAC in their estate plans, and in

doing so, to anchor their family’s MAC legacy, and remember their beloved family members who have gone before and made it all possible. One way to anchor your family’s legacy at the MAC is to make a gift to the MAC in the name of your family or in the name of a special loved one. Another convenient way is to designate the MAC as a beneficiary on one of your retirement accounts, or on a life insurance policy, or name the MAC in your will or trust. And if you do, please let us know, so that we can welcome you as a Member of the MAC Legends Society, which is comprised of those members who have remembered the MAC in their estate plans.

LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER ummer has gotten off to a scorching start with several days reaching triple digits. Our MAC families have found relief by flocking to the pool at West. Fortunately, we had scheduled and upgraded four new HVAC units for MAC West just in time for the heat wave. To keep both Clubhouses in a state of excellence, it takes more than just continual work to maintain and upgrade the facilities. The Missouri Athletic Club staff is dedicated in providing the Member exceptional experience daily. As the Club continues to grow both in Membership numbers and new facilities, there are challenges that arise in doing so. Like many businesses across the country, the Club has experienced staffing shortages at both Clubhouses despite the many positive changes occurring. The MAC has recently implemented an extensive hiring campaign to fill the gaps in various departments. Through emails, social media posts and hiring boards, we were able to hire several high-quality employees across several departments. I can’t thank the current staff enough for their all-out effort to add to our already exceptional team! Although the staff has gone above and beyond, the Club is still looking to fill around 30 roles. With the opening of the Jack Buck Grille, long-time employees approaching retirement and the 1903 Dining Room expecting to open in the fall, we are still in search of rock star employees so that we are a fully staffed Club, so help spread the word. A current list of job openings can be found on our website. As our new vision and mission statements begin to take shape, I want to give a shoutout to our new Director of Marketing, Jaymie Hauversburk. Many of you know Jaymie through her old role as a Membership Development Executive. In that role, she was able to learn the Club as quickly as possible before transitioning to her current role. Jaymie is now considered the “keeper of the brand” to ensure that the Club’s vision and mission statements are honored through everything the Club does. We are thrilled to see

S

6 F CHERRY DIAMOND

how Jaymie will bring the vision and mission statements to life at the Club! To fill the role in our Membership department, we welcome Will Johnston as the new Membership Development Executive. His role will be to serve as the primary Membership representative for that West Clubhouse and to assist new Members with the application process to help them get acquainted. Will is a familiar face to many as he was a camp counselor and pro shop attendant at the MAC years ago. It takes a lot to run two robust Clubhouses, but I’m proud to introduce Gerard Laruffa Jr. as the Assistant General Manager. He joins the Club with an extensive background in food and beverage making it a seamless transition for him to help guide the 1903 Dining Room in preparation for the opening later in the fall. Our Food and Beverage teams are now in great hands with our new hire Mensur Becirovic, who is the new Director of Food and Beverage at the Downtown Clubhouse. He has a colorful background in food service originally coming from the St. Louis Art Museum and the Sonesta Chase Park Plaza Hotel prior to that. I look forward to watching our newcomers strengthen our team. I want to also give a shout out to our long-time employees who have been steady for many years, being a big part of our success, but also helping us navigate through challenging times. I hope you enjoy what summer has to offer with your family and friends. Stay cool and be well. See you at the Club!

Wally Smith, General Manager Missouri Athletic Club

JULY 2022 F 7

THIRD QUARTER FINANCIAL REPORT ay marked the end of the third quarter of the Club’s fiscal year. Year-to-date, the Club has generated $1,472,000 of net operating cash flow (net income before depreciation), which was $39,000 ahead of budget. This positive financial performance is largely due to strong Membership recruitment activity and initiation fees. In May, our Membership reached 2,506. This is the first time our Membership has reached this level since Sept. 2010. This strong Membership performance resulted in dues revenue of $6,646,000 (which was $226,000 ahead of plan), and initiation fees of $400,000, topping the budget by $118,000.

M

The Club has also experienced strong performance in the following areas: F Downtown Food and Beverage revenues topped $3,256,000, exceeding last year’s revenues by $1,440,000 F West Food and Beverage experienced a similar performance, coming in at $2,297,000, which was $944,000 higher than last year F Total operating revenue came in at nearly $9 million, which was $3.4 million higher than last year and $185,000 greater than the budget

Other benchmarks include: F The line of credit balance was zero F Long-term bank debt was $8,833,000 F Positive working capital of $177,000 You may notice that our long-term debt has increased since my last report. In May, the Club borrowed $3 million with a favorable interest rate, for the purpose of fully funding our pension obligation. This will allow the frozen pension plan to be terminated. This is a lengthy and complicated process but will ensure that our eligible long-time employees will receive their pension benefits while safeguarding the Club’s financial standing. Your Club is in a strong financial position with a growing Membership, facilities that continue to be enhanced, and Member experiences that span generations. Your continued support of the MAC is key to our continued financial success. Thank you! If you have any questions regarding the Club’s finances, please contact the Club’s Chief Financial Officer, Pam Roth, at 314-539-4400 or proth@mac-stl.org.

ALL THINGS MAC Club Connections Podcast Spotlights Exceptional Members and Extraordinary Experiences

Since the inception of podcasts more than two decades ago, the field has grown slowly and steadily. The podcast industry didn’t truly boom until recent years and has exploded into a major trend in social media production. A proliferation of shows including participation from celebrities, investment from large companies like Spotify, and the spread of technologies that boost awareness, like smart speakers, have all helped spur the growth. Insider Intelligence projects there will be 424 million podcast listeners worldwide this year, accounting for 20.3% of internet users. In two years, that number is expected to grow to 504 million. Public interest has grown steadily each year, bringing more and more people into audiences. As a result, new podcast formats and platforms have emerged, offering podcasters and listeners unique techniques — YouTube podcasts for example. YouTube is arguably the internet’s dominant video platform, with more than 30 million visitors a day and a bigger audience than Netflix, Spotify or Apple Podcasts. Posting video podcasts on YouTube thus allowed podcasters to reach a broader audience than ever before.

16 F CHERRY DIAMOND

MEMBER

Podcasting is also rapidly becoming “big business.” The Interactive Advertising Bureau and PricewaterhouseCoopers released their annual joint report on the podcasting business, projecting that the industry will generate $2 billion in revenue this year and $4 billion by 2024. Earlier this year, the MAC jumped into the world of podcasts with the creation of Missouri Athletic Club Connections, a podcast highlighting Missouri’s only premier athletic club. The podcast spotlights the Club’s exceptional people and extraordinary experiences in all aspects of club life in the spirit of excellence, service and tradition. The Club debuted the MAC Connections podcast on nearly all major podcasting platforms on March 19. Since the initial episode, the podcast has highlighted the Art Society, dual membership with Glen Echo Country Club, MAC Members, community partners and much more. The MAC Connections podcast allows for Members to learn about the many things the Club has to offer in a new way. To outside listeners and community partners, the podcast gives a glimpse into the life of an MAC Member. The creator of the podcast is the Club’s Content Marketing Manager Marina Fanning. She had experience producing podcasts at her previous job and saw this initiative as an effective vehicle for reaching Members and the broader St. Louis community. “The MAC is a workplace that encourages creative freedom and new ideas like the podcast. This is a platform that the Members have enjoyed and I think, over time, they will tune in to listen about the amazing things going on at the Club on a regular basis,” said Fanning. To spread the spirit of excellence of the MAC and connect Members, the Communications and Membership departments joined forces to hit the ground running with the podcast. Rodney Stoyer, Director of Membership, and Kara Kelpe, Membership Development Executive, are the podcast hosts. “When we interview Members about their experiences at the MAC, whether it is with 150 Club Members like Darlene Roland reminiscing about dinners and events enjoyed at the Club with friends over a lifetime, or about the tradition of enjoying the Father-Daughter dance with Sarah Gibbs and Past President Engelbrecht, or spotlighting an organization right here in downtown St. Louis with passionate Member Alex Brockman, the story is best told by those Members in their own words and hearing their emotion convey what the MAC community means to them,” said Kelpe. “We can’t re-tell that in pictures and words.” The podcast takes stories from the Cherry Diamond, events and other experiences and brings them to life. The MAC Club Connections podcast will be a wonderful archive for Members and guests to look back on for many years to come. “In much the same way that Members currently quote the Cherry Diamond, I hope that we begin to hear Members saying things like, ‘I heard about that on the podcast,’” said Stoyer. A Concussion – also known as a mild traumatic brain injury – is caused by a blow to the head or impact to the body, and can lead to a wide range of physical, cognitive, emotional, social and behavioral challenges. Be honest about any problems you may experience. Don’t disregard your symptoms, try to “tough it out,” or return to play too soon. AROUND THE CLUB

A Tradition of Service and an Inspired Vision By Eliot Frick Elliot Frick is the Founder of Bigwidesky, a human business consultancy that helps organizations design integral solutions to crises of change. Bigwidesky played a critical role in creating the new vision and mission statements for the Missouri Athletic Club. One of the biggest mistakes that member organizations can make when they are seeking to increase their visibility and impact is to focus on features and benefits. After spending some time with members, they will often launch a series of campaigns that seek to highlight some aspect of the organization to gain a new position. The Missouri Athletic Club has exceptional members, state-of-the-art facilities, and access to incredible opportunities. It is a place to work out, to meet, to have a dining experience, to stay overnight, to host an event. It is a community of influential and service-minded members and their families. As an organization, it has shaped the conversation of St. Louis civic, social, and business leadership. It has so many features. So often, when clubs aim to improve the position their organization within a community, they tend to implement a wellintentioned guessing game that involves trotting out different features in the hopes of snagging improving the club’s position. What we have learned over years of working with great organizations like the MAC is that there is something that binds those features together. There is a thread and a kind of essence that is foundational to those experiences and benefits. That underlying form is not always easy to see or explain, but it is something the members and staff of MAC have cultivated for years. There is something there. And we call that something the brand. Organizations that make an intentional and painstaking effort to describe that underlying brand create lasting and foundational transformations now and in the future. They leverage that brand to build

trust with other organizations and with new member relationships. They deepen the experiences that members have because those experiences are tied to a more fundamental kind of meaning. Our process, based on strategic foresight, brand theory, and developmental psychology, gathers the internal and external stakeholders to explore the underlying form of the brand. For MAC, this included some of our patented facilitated sessions, interviews, social media audits, and content reviews. We took a look at how the stakeholders inside the organization understood the brand and how external audiences perceived it. Perhaps most importantly, two of our strategists became members and immersed ourselves into the MAC culture. Along the way, we found ourselves inspired, surprised, and delighted at both the current and aspirational intentions of the brand. Our process seeks to reveal rather than to define. Brand is something that is alive and embedded within organizations. And our role, largely, is to uncover and make visible what is otherwise invisible. What resulted is an articulation of the brand that can serve as a wellspring of inspiration for the organization. We revealed aligning principles for shaping the preferred futures. We learned what the brand represents in its essence, and we, in close collaboration with the core brand team, were able to put that energy into a set of words and values. WHAT WE FOUND: The world needs more organizations like the MAC. The world, right now, is feeling increasingly uncertain. This is true of governments, communities, industries, and businesses. When these uncertain times occur, people are starving for meaning. They want to know that their efforts to contend with uncertainty mean something.

Powerful and abiding mission and vision statements provide clarity during uncertain or challenging times. They serve as a guide when even the best laid plans are threatened. They are the cornerstones of a more resilient and intentional organization like the MAC. In our opinion, the updated MAC mission and vision statements seek to hold on to aspirational ideals while meeting the evolving needs for our members and the St. Louis community. They offer a commander’s intent or direction toward preserving a tradition of service while creating an environment that is an attractor of exceptional people. WHAT IS NEXT FOR MAC WITH AN UPDATED BRAND, MISSION, AND VISION? John Maxwell, a revered author on leadership, was paraphrased in a recent meeting we had with the Detroit Athletic Club, “People do not follow a plan,” they said. “People follow a vision.” It has been our experience that this is an absolute truth. And, to that end, we believe that the refreshed mission and vision will calibrate an already accomplished organization in a direction that meets lofty expectations. JULY 2022 F 27

Annual Veterans Day Commemoration Calls for Nominations Save the Date! This year’s Veterans Day Commemoration event will take place on Thursday, Nov. 10, at the Downtown Clubhouse. At this annual event, the MAC will honor the Veteran of the Year, a retired or former member of the U.S. military from the St. Louis area who demonstrates support of veterans and the U.S. in everyday life, and who serves as a role model for other citizens. If you know a deserving veteran, nominate him or her for Veteran of the Year. The Veterans Day Committee will review the nominations and select the individual to receive the award based on the criteria listed on the nomination form. To nominate

an individual, complete the nomination form located online under My MAC > Communication > Documents and submit to Katie Maurer by Friday, Aug. 19. The Veterans Committee is seeking Members who are interested in the Veterans’ Award Program. The Missouri Veterans Recognition Program, authorized the Missouri National Guard Adjutant General to procure and present, as a token of the appreciation of the state, a medal to each member of the National Guard of Missouri who served with a Missouri unit, and veterans who served in the armed forces during World War I, World War

II, Korean and Vietnam Wars. For more information, contact Katie Maurer at kmaurer@mac-stl.org.

MAC MEMBERS SERVING VETERANS Who knew five MAC members were enthusiastic volunteers serving veterans in the St. Louis community? Squash devotees Chris Connell, Craig Parker, Gene Frederic and Chris Shepherd regularly pay their own way to accompany area veterans as guardians on Greater St. Louis Honor Flights. Chris also serves Chairman of the Board of Greater St. Louis Honor Flight, with MAC Member Lisa Holley, daughter of a WWII veteran, the Vice Chairman. So, what is an Honor Flight, you ask? It is a national network of independent hubs working together to honor our nation’s veterans with an all-expenses-paid trip to their memorials in Washington, D.C., a trip many veterans may not otherwise be able to take. At 3:30 a.m. on a May morning, our MAC volunteers were at St. Louis Lambert Airport getting their assigned St. Louis area

WWII, Korea and Vietnam veterans ready for a 5:30 a.m. charter flight for a day of visiting their memorials in Washington, D.C. A water cannon salute greeted the veterans and their guardians at Regan National Airport. Excitement was high on the National Mall during a picture-perfect spring day for visits to the impressive WWII, Korea and Vietnam Memorials. Then, it was off to Arlington National Cemetery to see the dignity of the changing of the guard ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns, followed by visits to the Marine Iwo Jima Memorial, high on its hill above Arlington Cemetery and the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial alongside the Potomac River. Last stop was the Air Force Memorial, a soaring sculpture representing the Missing Man flight formation, where a group of D.C area Sweet Adelines serenaded veterans with WWII era swing tunes.

By: Judith Hanses, Past Governor

The adrenaline-filled day was capped by an unmatched welcome home ceremony for veterans returning to Lambert Airport. At the gate, Active-Duty military members and a multitude of veterans provided a double line of salutes to welcome veterans home. Extending from the gate to the Terminal 2 lobby, a full-blown military parade, including the St. Louis County Police pipe and drum marching band, led returning veterans through a packed crowd of cheering family members, friends, Honor Flight volunteers and even passengers waiting for flights. It was a memorable day for veterans and guardians alike. Have you served in the military? Have you seen your memorials in Washington, D.C.? Find the application for Honor flight at gslhonorflight.org. Those who wish to serve as guardians will find an application in the same location.F
