LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Hello fellow MAC members and welcome to June 2024! I hope this message finds you well, taking full advantage of the outstanding offerings of our Club, and enjoying the start of summer. It is an honor and privilege to serve as your President, and I look forward to the year ahead, filled with continued service to you and our Club.

Firstly, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to President Perryman. His dedication and vigor in serving our Club have been instrumental throughout our transition, and his counsel has left us better educated and prepared. I know he’s looking forward to enjoying more time on the golf course — especially when Ann “encourages” him to get out of the house! We are fortunate to have him just a phone call away. Being the 109th President, I’m grateful for the depth and breadth of our collective Past Presidents’ experience, exemplified by President Perryman. I thank him and all of them for their unwavering support!

I also want to extend my appreciation to the outgoing class of Governors: First Vice President Cheri McLaughlin, Second Vice President Mark Niemeyer, Secretary Aaron Pawlitz, and Treasurer Mark McClanahan. Their time, energy, passion, and leadership have left a positive mark on our Club, setting a high bar for the future. The 2024-2025 Board is well-positioned to carry this momentum forward, and so I thank them for their dedicated service.

On May 16, our 2024-2025 Board began their work. I am energized by the diverse experiences and innovative ideas each Governor brings. To my fellow senior classmates — First Vice President Tom Dankenbring, Second Vice President Jeff Wehmer, Secretary Gary Sextro, and Treasurer Tim Maynard — I extend my deepest appreciation for their friendship, support, and leadership. To the junior class — Carrie Burggraf, Adrian Di Bisceglie, Mike Kozeny, Matt Masiel, and Dave Sweeney — and the freshman class — Bob Bax, Mark Milton, Peggy Northcott, Jerina Phillips, and Cale Prokopf — I thank them for their willingness to lend their time and talent to our Club. I look forward to working alongside each of them, our committees, GM/COO Chip Misch, and our superb staff to continue growing and strengthening the MAC.

Reflecting on our nearly 121-year history, from rebuilding after a devastating fire in the early 1900s to navigating a global pandemic over a century later, our resilience is remarkable. With 2,620 engaged members, stable financials with total YTD revenue up $2.1MM (11%) from this time last year, rich traditions, and exceptional leadership from our GM/COO, our Club is thriving with great opportunities ahead. One of my greatest responsibilities as President is to protect our members, our team, and the Club itself. This means focusing on sustainable growth through purposeful and intentional actions.

Over the past year, we have diligently refined our strategic plan to achieve our vision of being the foremost private Club in St. Louis, attracting exceptional people and enriching lives for generations and our mission to create extraordinary experiences in all aspects of Club life, in the spirit of excellence, service, and tradition. Our strategic pillars are:

F Relevance & Sustainability: Facilities, brand, membership programs, family culture, life safety, reciprocals, and communications.

F Membership Experience: Engagement and recruitment, retention, technology, personalized services, safety and security, athletics, business services, Club events, and organic membership growth.

F Organizational Excellence: Employer of choice, data-driven decisions, strong leadership, and continuous IT optimization.

F Civic Leadership & Engagement: Philanthropic strategy, intentional regional civic engagement, strategic partnerships, and targeted media programs.

F Financial Stewardship: Maintaining a solid foundation, KPIs/ benchmarks, and managing member vs. non-member revenue.

I will elaborate on these areas in future letters, including updates on the Downtown 6th Floor Board Room and Dining Room renovation project, which is proceeding well and the potential Clayton location amenity, which has proven to be more complex than the decision to bring back the caramel rolls. “Potential” means we have not decided yet, but rest assured we will be purposeful and intentional in our decision-making, staying true to the history and traditions that make the MAC such a special place.

As you anticipate these edge-of-seat updates, let’s celebrate the wonderful experiences across the Club in May. From the Apollos and Election Day festivities with Dixieland jazz to the Derby race (thank you Mystic Dan…$$$), to finding gifts at the Summer Wines and Macallan tastings, to the current state update in the Annual Business Meeting, and to the forever cherished memories at the Father-Daughter Banquet with the highest attendance in over 10 years! We also welcomed our summer Law Clerks and enjoyed a discussion with Emerson’s CEO Lal Karsanbhai as part of our very successful Speaker Series program. And now, bring on June and summertime! In addition to the outdoor pool being open, be sure to check out some enhancements in the West Clubhouse pool area including the newly renovated snack bar/cafe! We also have the MAC High School All-Star Senior Soccer Games on June 15, Father’s Day Brunch on June 16, our 50-Year Member Celebration Dinner on June 18, a Dive-In Movie on June 21, and the Fourth of July breakfast buffet and parade.

In addition to our diverse MAC events, take advantage of both Clubhouses before/after the NASCAR Cup Enjoy Illinois 300 at WWT Gateway Raceway the first weekend in June, Cardinals games (the season has to get better, right?), STL CITY matches, Battlehawks games (UFL Championship in St. Louis on June 16 — Ka Kaw Ka Kaw!) and the many concerts and events across our St. Louis region.

Some really good information follows in the pages ahead including an overview of our summer youth programs. Note to self that the swim team is for ages 5-18; I’ve been practicing all winter ...

Thank you for taking the time to read through my thoughts. Questions and words of wisdom are always welcome, and I hope to see you soon!

With gratitude,

4 F CHERRY DIAMOND

LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

The Summer affords us the opportunity to extend your MAC experience to the outdoors! We are particularly excited about the enhanced West pool dining experience and look forward to a summer of fun! The enhancements are a first step in improving the overall experience in the year ahead, so please let us know your thoughts on improving this important amenity! A special note of “thanks” goes to Gerard, Chef Jess, Karen and Darrin for their thoughtful planning efforts. As noted, we will be expanding our offering to poolside dinner soon.

As many of you are aware, we partnered with Pacesetter to bring the MAC the best technology and communications! We launched the app to unprecedented levels and are certain this platform will provide continued conveniences in enhancing your Club experience!

The feedback has been very favorable and is the result of many members of the MAC team, but particularly Caitlin Demaree-Dyer, Monica Ryan, Caitlin Brenner, Jim Wilson, Rick Garrett, Nick Pardo and Rodney Stoyer – the planning required many months of detailed work and programming at all levels operationally – and they nailed it!

Coming Soon ... access to the West Clubhouse will require the use of the app. So please download it today and look for forthcoming details as to our enhanced security protocols.

As I enter my tenth month of serving the members and employees of the MAC, I am especially grateful for the tremendous support of the graduating class of the Board of Governors – Aaron Pawlitz, Cheri McLaughlin, Mark McClanahan, Mark Niemeyer and President Neal Perryman! They were enthusiastic, patient and ever-ready as I joined the MAC and made an ever-lasting impact on driving “Better” at the MAC! President Perryman was particularly gracious with his time and leadership, and I could not be more excited about the year ahead, which is a result of the collective momentum we were able to implement with the Board and management, together!

Very best regards,

MAC ART COLLECTION SPOTLIGHT

Scavenger Hunt

MAY ANSWER:

This splendid painting by one of Britain’s foremost marine artists is a scene just off the shores of the seaport town of Cowes, the popular boating and watering place on England’s Isle of Wight. Dawson’s deft handling of sea, sky and sailing craft clearly justifies his pre-eminence in his field. The Cowes Regatta is one of the UK’s longest running and most successful sporting events, held annually in August since 1826. The artist, Montague Dawson, is considered one of the great maritime painters, able to capture the motion of the waves alongside his documentation of the great clippers and warships of the 18th and 19th centuries. He was the son of an engineer who was also an avid yachtsman, and Dawson spent many long hours aboard the family cutter, inheriting a love of the sea. At age eight he had sold his first painting and by age twelve, he had won his first art competition.

(1890-1973) |

35-1/2 inches | Signed lower left.

Following WWI, Dawson was a household name for his commercial and critical success, and it is believed he was the second-highest paid living artist in the world, second only to Pablo Picasso. Following his death in 1973, his paintings became all the more sought after.

Have you seen this painting?

One hundred fifty years ago, the structure depicted in this painting was opened to the public and considered a marvel of design and engineering! This painting once greeted visitors to the Club. Now it hangs in a more prominent space where all can enjoy its tremendous scale. If you look closely, our historic Clubhouse can be seen in the background.

MAC BOOK CLUB

Thursday, June 13 F 5:30 p.m. F West Clubhouse

Thursday, July 11 F 5:30 p.m. F West Clubhouse

On June 13, Cathy Beckette will guide the discussion of Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan.

When New Yorker Rachel Chu agrees to spend the summer in Singapore with her boyfriend, Nicholas Young, she envisions a humble family home and quality time with the man she hopes to marry. But Nick has failed to give his girlfriend a few key details. One, that his childhood home looks like a palace; two, that he grew up riding in more private planes than cars; and three, that he just happens to be the country’s most eligible bachelor. On Nick’s arm, Rachel may as well have a target on her back the second she steps off the plane, and soon, her relaxed vacation turns into an obstacle course of old money, new money, nosy relatives, and scheming social climbers.

As the Book Club continues into summer, Marie Salter will lead us through The Guncle by Steven Rowley.

Patrick, or Gay Uncle Patrick (GUP, for short), has always loved his niece, Maisie, and nephew, Grant. That is, he loves spending time with them when they visit Palm Springs for weeklong visits, or when he heads home to Connecticut for the holidays. But in terms of caretaking, Patrick is overwhelmed. When tragedy strikes and Maisie and Grant lose their mother and Patrick’s brother has a health crisis of his own, Patrick finds himself suddenly taking on the role of primary guardian. Patrick has no idea what to expect, having spent years barely holding on after losing his great love, a stalled acting career, and a lifestyle not-sosuited to a six- and a nine-year-old. Quickly realizing that parenting isn’t solved with treats and jokes, Patrick’s eyes are opened to a new sense of responsibility, and the realization that sometimes being larger than life means you’re unfailingly human.

The Military History Club welcomes a Zoom appearance by Steve Snyder, president of the 306th Bomb Group Historical Association and member of the board of directors of the 8th Air Force Historical Society. In retirement, Snyder dedicated four and a half years to research the saga of B-17 Susan Ruth, piloted by his father, Howard Snyder, when he was knocked out of the sky by German fighters over the French/ Belgium border on Feb. 8, 1944. The result was SHOT DOWN: The True Story of Pilot Howard Snyder and the Crew of the B-17 Susan Ruth

The individual stories of the crew and the courageous Belgian people who risked their lives to help them are remarkable. Snyder will give his account of their heroic service and ordeals.

TENNIS TIPS FROM CK RACQUET RESTRINGING

One of the most common questions I receive is “How often should I restring my racquet?” This is a great question, and one that can be answered a couple of different ways.

General wisdom says that a person should restring their racquet as many times in a year as they play during a week. Example, if a person plays three times per

week, they would restring their racquet every 4 months.

For players who are more competitive, or play with a heavier spin on their shots, they may want to restring more frequently. Putting heavy spin on a ball creates more friction in the strings and can cause them to lose tension and/or break quicker. Competitive players may notice a loss of control as the tension decreases and may want to restring immediately once they feel this.

To summarize, there is no one set rule for restringing. If you are a local rec player enjoying tennis at your club amongst friends, the rule of restringing every 4-6 months is more than sufficient. For the more competitive and higherlevel players, restringing more frequently guarantees more consistent playability from your racquet to help achieve better results.

For any questions about stringing frequency, or types of string, I am always happy to help, and will be the person who strings your racquet for you here at the MAC! Contact me at 540-819-4719 or ckramer@mac-stl.org.

BASKETBALL BANQUET

The annual MAC Basketball Banquet was held to celebrate the Club’s recently concluded basketball session. The Club’s basketball players gathered to watch the NCAA National Championship game and hand out awards to some of the Club’s top hoopsters.

The 2024 Bill Daake Sportsmanship Award was presented to Dave Wenzel. The award goes to the player who best exemplifies Bill’s athletic spirit and sportsmanship. Bill was a longtime MAC basketball player who died of a cerebral aneurysm at the age of 33. Through his actions and attitudes on the court, Bill set a standard of sportsmanship that all MAC athletes should strive to attain. As a high school All-American at St. Louis Priory School, Bill was the Globe-Democrat basketball player of the year in 1969 and went on to play collegiately at Princeton.

Wenzel has been a regular in the leagues since joining the Club in 2014. He has represented the MAC many times at the NACAD Basketball Tournament over the years. Wenzel is a team player, and his teammates enjoy playing alongside him.

The 2024 Rookie of the Year Award

went to Alec Bausch. He first played in the 2023 Double Elimination Tournament, followed by the 2023 Summer and 2023 Fall Leagues, and is set to represent the MAC on the A team at the NACAD Tournament. During the 2023 Summer League, he averaged 17.8 PPG and was tied for 5th in scoring. In Fall 2023, he finished 7th in scoring with an average of 17.9 PPG.

The 2024 “DA BRICK” Award went to Ben Albers. The award is an actual “BRICK” that is presented each year to the worst free throw shooter. Albers earned this dubious distinction for the first time by shooting 42% from the line this year (20-48 overall).

2024 DOUBLE ELIMINATION TOURNEY RESULTS

The annual MAC Double Elimination Basketball Tournament concluded on April 16. The winning team was captained by Christian Burns. They beat the team captained by Matt Morris 78-42 to win the championship. Team Burns finished the tournament undefeated.

Brent Smith (Team Burns) was named Tournament MVP for his play throughout the tournament.

COACH MAGGIE’S NOTES

ON SUGARY FOODS

Sugar is in 80% of the foods we eat, so the more you familiarize yourself with the hidden names of sugar, the easier label reading will become. The easiest way to avoid added sugar is to buy fresh, whole, natural foods that are minimally processed. Shop the perimeter of your grocery store and avoid the inner aisles. Anything that is packaged or preserved and shelf-stable is likely to have added sugar in it.

THERE ARE TWO TYPES OF SUGARS IN FOODS — NATURALLY OCCURRING SUGARS AND ADDED SUGARS.

Natural Sugar:

Naturally occurring sugars are found naturally in foods such as fruit (fructose) and milk (lactose). Natural sugar such as agave and coconut sugar are not any better for you. Coconut sugar contains about the same amounts of fructose and glucose as ordinary table sugar. Agave is often heavily processed and contains up to 90% fructose.

Added Sugar:

Unlike natural sugars, added sugars are considered empty calories because they lack the nutritional content (vitamins, minerals, fiber) of natural sugars. Women should consume no more than 100 calories or 6 teaspoons (24 grams) of added sugar each day and most men should consume no more than 150 calories or 9 teaspoons (36 grams).

COMMON SOURCES OF ADDED SUGARS INCLUDE:

Sugar-sweetened beverages such as sodas, fruit drinks, energy drinks, and sports

drinks are by far the biggest sources of added sugar in the average diet. Drink water or unsweetened teas.

COMMON TYPES OF ADDED SUGARS INCLUDE:

Table sugar (sucrose), high-fructose corn syrup, honey, agave nectar, and maple syrup (even though these are natural products, when added to foods they are considered added sugars)

CHECK THE INGREDIENTS FOR SUGAR.

There are many disguises for sugar in our foods. Look for words ending in -ose, words ending in sugar (ex: beet sugar or cane sugar), words of or related to malt, and words ending in –ol.

READING THE LABEL:

When looking at an ingredient label, sometimes it can be difficult to figure out just how much sugar is included. A good rule of thumb is to look at the nutrition facts label and only consume foods where the sugar content is no more than 20% of the total carbohydrate.

To follow the 20% rule, do the following:

1. Look at the total number of carbohydrates listed on the nutrition facts label.

2. Multiply that number by 10% (move the decimal point over one place) and then double it.

3. Whatever that number is, you want the sugars listed on the label to be that number or less.

Example:

1. Carbohydrates listed on the label – 40g

2. 20% of the total carbohydrates would be 8g

3. Amount of sugar listed on the label –17g

4. Bottom line: This product has too much sugar

THE EFFECTS OF SUGAR AND WORKING OUT:

Consuming sugary drinks can lead to dehydration, which can significantly weaken exercise performance. Proper hydration is crucial for optimal muscle function and recovery. It can also cause blood sugar spikes followed by sugar crashes, affecting performance levels during workouts. Eating too much sugar can cause higher insulin levels, which can prevent the body’s ability to burn fat.

Downtown Pastry Updates

As the summer season approaches, the Downtown Pastry Team begins their work on the annual gingerbread display. With a busy fall season ahead, it’s imperative the team starts their work early to make the festive arrangement as amazing as possible!

This month, the planning process will include brainstorming the construction and placement of the gingerbread display. The Pastry Team will work closely with the Engineering Team and Mr. Holderly to conceptualize a wider gingerbread display and rearranged train table.

The team will also start making cardboard cutouts for the buildings. These serve two purposes; first, to see if sizes need to change to get an idea of what the end product will look like, and two, to use these cut-outs as the gingerbread is pieced so it’s the right size.

Also, this month, the team will begin making fondant figures. This year will involve more fondant creations than previous displays, so all hands will be on deck! With the bread shop opening back up this year, the Pastry Team will experiment with including bread in the final display, as well.

What will the theme be for this year’s gingerbread display? The team’s hint: it’s a classic St. Louis institution.
