President’s Column

President’s Column President Dean Eggerding

To begin my first column, let me first say how grateful I am to have the opportunity to serve this great Club as President. I am excited for the coming year and to continue the success the MAC has had over the years with great leadership. In addition to me, the Class of 2015 is listed below. All of these gentlemen will do a great job in their final year on the Board, and I look forward to further working with them in the coming year. This is a special place and I look forward to representing the membership as its leader. With a new “senior” class coming in a class is also going out. A big thank you and congratulations to the outgoing class of President John Bugh, First Vice-President Judith Hanses, Second-Vice President John Kingston, Treasurer Troy Robertson and Secretary Terry Hammer. This class helped lead the MAC through some difficult decisions and should be commended for their accomplishments. Thanks to each of you for your leadership and dedication to the Club. With the passing of another year, it also means introducing a new class of governors, and the incoming group is a very impressive one. The nominating committee did a great job

of finding eight talented candidates, and the five chosen I am confident will be awesome stewards for the Club. Congratulations to Rebekah Bahn, Tracy Beckette, Duffy Dunn, Troy Robertson and Tripp Zumwalt. With this team of new Governors and the individuals in place, I can assure you we are all committed to work as a team to move the MAC forward with an eye on the future and long-range planning.

As members, we are all investors in the MAC and should be passionate about our success.

As we move into June, it is a very exciting time to be a member at the MAC with everything that is going on as we enter the summer season. The swim team is in full swing and the West Clubhouse pool is the place to be. It is a great social aspect of the Club, and you never know what diving board record-breaking flip you will see! Please mark Saturday, June 14, on your calendar for the first poolside happy hour hosted by our Associates

group. The Associates always throw a great party, so please come by to check out the fun. If that date doesn’t work into your schedule, stop by on June 28 for the Women’s Initiative Umbrella Drink Night. This group does a fantastic job with every Club event they host so this will be another event to make sure you attend. While the pool is great, don’t forget the many other summertime events. As part of its ongoing commitment to local sports and young athletes, the MAC continues to support amateur soccer and will once again help sponsor the upcoming High School All-Star Games at Soccer Park in Fenton on June 28. The Games are now in their 30th year of existence, and in honor of this anniversary, a special alumni game will be held prior to the high school events. Check out page 19 of this issue for more information. It is also worth mentioning that while Fair St. Louis will be moving to Forest Park due to the Arch grounds renovation, the MAC will have a large presence there for our members, including dining, drinks and parade seating, as well as the annual MAC float. Please see page 17 for details. Again, I am excited to lead the Club for the next year. As members, we are all investors in the MAC and should be passionate about our success. I look forward to meeting many new faces this year and welcome feedback and ideas. Feel free to reach out to me at 314-342-7176. Thanks to all of you for your support of the MAC and see you at the Club!

General Manager

From the General Manager’s Desk Wally Smith

As we begin developing our budgets for the coming fiscal year, I’m so pleased to have our experienced Governors totally plugged in and happy to welcome our new class with their fresh eyes and thoughts. I extend my huge thanks to our outgoing class of Governors: Judith Hanses, Terry Hammer, John Kingston and of course, President John Bugh. The hours of time and talents they give to the club have left a mark and set us on a very powerful and exciting course. They joined the Board during some very difficult times and through their stewardship and hard work have left the Club in a much stronger condition for which they should all be very proud. Thank you all! At press time, work was underway at the West Clubhouse to fence in the grassy area by the pool, which will extend the fun with more useful area to enjoy. Resurfacing our eight indoor tennis courts, which will mimic the distinctive blue and green colors of the U.S. Open Courts, has also just got underway. Our tennis players will celebrate with an official ribbon-cutting event on July 5 in conjunction with the “Breakfast at Wimbledon” event. This will be a great event and lots of fun for both tennis players and just members in general. Please stop by and show your support. These projects just about conclude a series of capital improvements planned and budgeted for nearly a year ago that included the hotel remodel, new security desk, squash court improvements and more. While we’re pleased to check each of these projects off the list as completed, the planning cycle never stops.

In an earlier column, I talked about the 4 A’s of planning – setting the agenda, allocating resources, activating work and building accountability. Before the paint can even dry on the courts, we’re already underway with the agenda-setting and budgeting process for the next fiscal year. Together, our leaders and management team are working to identify opportunities to improve and enhance MAC programs and facilities for the coming year and our best investments with “Members are the focus of all we do” as the battle cry. We truly welcome and encourage your feedback. I hope you have noticed a recent online survey on Club communications – thank you to all who took the time to respond to this very short but important survey and share your thoughts. (The results of that survey will be recapped in the next issue of the magazine.) Please look for more surveys of this type throughout the year on different aspects of the Club, as we work to make sure we’re continually meeting our targets and responding to member needs. We promise to keep them short and to the point and to share the results with you as we go. Our newest and terrifically exciting offering is the ClubCorp Network. It is so powerful and the value derived when utilized is ridiculous. For just $50 per month our member can have access to another 200+/- private club with all their benefits across the country. These are world class clubs like Firestone and Pinehurst and the list goes on and on. For our travelers who love golf or our snowbirds needing a Florida club you need to find out more!

We’ve held a number of informational sessions on this program, and the feedback and positive buzz has been overwhelming. In the words of Todd Hilliker, one of earliest members to sign up, “ClubCorp membership is truly a ‘no-brainer’ for anyone who travels regularly.” For our golfers closer to home, we continue to offer access to four great country club courses, with plans to add one or more in the future. Four local courses, plus hundreds more nationwide through the ClubCorp Network, is a benefit no other club in our area offers. One of those favorite courses, Glen Echo Country Club, will play host to the 7th Annual MAC Foundations Golf Classic on Monday, Aug. 25. This year, the event will benefit not only the MAC Preservation Foundation (80%) but also the Sports Foundation (10%) and Art Foundation (10%). The event will sell out, so be sure to reserve your spot now. And if you would like to sponsor a hole or donate something really cool for the auction, please contact Katie at 314539-4402. It is truly an honor for me to play my part in this awesome Club, and I thank you all very much for the opportunity. See you at the Club,

RESULTS ARE IN! Bahn, Beckette, Dunn,

Newly elected Governors Tracy Beckette, Tripp Zumwalt, Troy Robertson, Duffy Dunn and Rebekah Bahn.

Another election season has wrapped up at the MAC, as a new class joins the MAC Board of Governors for three-year terms. While members also have the option of silent and absentee voting prior to Election Day, many couldn’t resist the energy and excitement of the Downtown Clubhouse on May 1. With eight candidates on the ballot, the race was tough this year, and voter turnout was up. As is tradition, the candidates and their supporters packed the gauntlet for last-minute campaigning before voters went into the polls. After voting closed, members headed to the Missouri Room for the complimentary buffet dinner followed by the announcement of the results amidst the sounds of cheers. Thank you to all the candidates, volunteers and members who took the time to participate in this year’s election process. As the new class was sworn in, the new officers also began their terms: President Dean Eggerding, First Vice-President Greg Beekman, Second Vice-President Kim DeMotte, Secretary John Salter and Treasurer John Noce. Welcome to the 2015-16 Board of Governors Class! Rebekah Bahn, a graduate of SLU School of Law, is Vice President for Colliers International. She joined the MAC in 2005 but has been a member all her life through her family. She is active in the Golf Club and Business Development Group and was named to St. Louis Business Journal’s “40 Under 40” in 2014.

MAC candidates, committees and members lined the Gauntlet throughout the day. 8

President-elect Dean Eggerding thanks all the officers for their service.

E. Tracy Beckette joined the Club in 1968 and is Executive Vice President and Chief Credit Officer for Heartland Bank. He served in the U.S. Army and National Guard from 1971 to 2005, retiring as Brigadier General. In addition to numerous organizations and boards outside the MAC, he volunteers his time within to the Veterans’ Day Committee.

R. Duffy Dunn grew up in the MAC and officially joined in 2003. With 12 years of financial industry experience, he serves as Vice President/Senior Client Manager for Bank of America Merrill Lynch. He is an avid basketballer at the MAC, playing on several traveling “A” teams, and was the Golf Club’s 2013 Men’s Champ. Troy Robertson, Sales Associates for Coldwell Banker Gundaker, was elected to a second term on the Board of Governors. He just wrapped up his term as Treasurer and has served as co-chair of the Membership and Clubs Within the Club committees. He has been active in the MAC basketball league since he joined in 2001.

M.R. “Tripp” Zumwalt, III is President of Zumwalt Corporation, which has been in business since 1924. A third-generation member, he joined the MAC in 1998. He has served on several boards, including Associated General Contractors of America and the Construction Career Center School, and is past alumnus advisor for Kappa Sigma Fraternity.

Robertson and Zumwalt Elected to Board

Outgoing President John Bugh announces the election results.

Numerous MAC members volunteered their time to assist with the election process.

With eight qualified candidates, voters had some tough choices to make.

TENNIS IMPROVEMENTS UNDERWAY

Work on the West Clubhouse tennis courts began May 19, with all eight of the courts set to be resurfaced and painted. Designed for the best possible ball visibility for players and spectators alike, U.S. Open Blue and U.S. Open Green will be the new court colors at the MAC! Quick Start 60’ courts for USTA junior competition are also in the works. The scheduled improvements should wrap up in early June, and a Grand Slam Ceremonial Opening of the courts will take place in conjunction with the 2nd Annual Breakfast at Wimbledon (see sidebar).

LADIES’ INTERCLUB SEASON WRAPUP

The women who competed for the MAC during the Ladies Interclub tennis season have a lot to be proud of! This year, both A and B divisions had fantastic results. The A Team finished its indoor season in 7th place, while the B Team finished in 5th place. A big reason for this year’s success is the high level of commitment many players had towards improving their games through clinics, private lessons and extra play. The season end was marked with a Ladies Interclub Luncheon & Awards Presentation, including: MVPs – Debbie Schmitt & Jennifer Griesedieck Most Improved – Tricia Hagan (at right, with Coach Scott Stutz) Most Competitive – Allie Zumwalt Sportsmanship – Susie Florent & Joi Morehaus Most Punctual – Laura Kennedy & Jill McNieve

PRO TIP: RELAX!

By MAC Tennis Director Kim Steinmetz Open your tennis game to a higher potential by using relaxation techniques throughout a match. To relax before the return of serve, take a few breaths, shake your legs out and bounce on the balls of your feet without coming off the ground. To relax on the serve, shake your arms out so that your wrists wiggle a bit, take a practice toss and loosen your grip on the handle even throughout your swing. But don’t loosen so much so that the racquet flies out of your hand! There is also a trick to relaxing during a rally – exhale or grunt as you strike the ball. For some, a grunt is the easiest way to make yourself exhale and forces more air from your lungs, which is a good thing. This is the explanation behind the sounds you hear players exude as they hit the ball! When you exhale, your diaphragm and back muscles relax, allowing your swing to be more effortless, fluid and complete. Try a few grunts out on the court and see if your shots are not only more stress-free, but also hit with more speed!

FED CUP EVENT

The MAC hosted an unexpected event in April when it was announced just four weeks prior that the Women’s Fed Cup match between the U.S. and France would be played at Chaifetz Arena. Along with getting group tickets, the MAC put together an evening of tennis drills followed by a wine tasting. The clinic was led by two former French Fed Cup players, Sophie Amiach and Karine Quentrec, with MAC pros Kim Steinmetz and Scott Stutz lending a hand. A tennis clinic led by tennis champs, wine tasting with hors d’oeuvres from Chef Grant Higgs and tickets to the Fed Cup matches – we couldn’t go wrong with that combination!

Some of the benefits of racquetball are obvious – staying active, burning calories, improving coordination, reducing stress, building muscles. But much like golf, the game of racquetball offers great opportunities for connecting with fellow members and building professional and personal friendships. If you’re looking for fellow players, be sure to check out one of the following opportunities at the West Clubhouse: • Tuesday Night League – 7-9 p.m., followed by social time in the bar • Thursday Night Doubles – 5:30 p.m. • Challenge Ladder – network and meet new players For more information on racquetball at the MAC, contact Dave Schwent at 314-539-4467.

The MAC recently welcomed Gretchen Haughey as the new Penguins Dive Coach for the 2014 season. In addition to her role at the MAC, she coaches Washington University Division III divers, Pattonville High School male divers and club divers through the Clayton Diving Alliance (CDA). Her diving background includes four years as a state qualifier and competitor for John Burroughs School and 2002 MWAA League Champion, as well as qualifying and competing in the Winter 2001 Junior Olympic Nationals. After high school, she went on to dive for the University of Virginia’s Women’s Swim & Dive Team for two seasons, during which time the team won the Atlantic Coast Conference both years. In addition to coaching, she still enjoys diving and competing. Come cheer on the MAC swimmers and divers this summer – see page 16 for the schedule of meets.

Basketball Tournament Results MAC Double Elimination Basketball Tournament – The 2014 MAC Tournament concluded on April 15 with the championship games, as the team captained by Nick Bauer defeated the team captained by Mike Todd. Team Bauer came out of the winner’s bracket undefeated, while Team Todd came from the loser’s bracket, meaning they had to win two games to take the championship. In the first game, Team Todd dominated 71-50 to set up a winner-takes-all second game. In the second game, Team Bauer trailed 29-27, but with just five seconds to go, Brad Mills hit a three-pointer to secure the championship with a 30-29 score. Overall, Duffy Dunn led the tournament in scoring, with an average of 19.3 points per game (PPG), followed by Michael Lofton (19 PPG) and Larry Drury (18.8 PPG). Drury was also named Tournament MVP for his performance throughout the tournament and help in leading Team Bauer to victory.

The team competed in the AA (35+) division and finished the tournament with a record of 1-3. They played some great basketball but ran into some very tough tournament competitors. In all, 10 clubs participated in this year’s tournament in seven divisions, for a total of 34 teams.

(l to r) Back Row – Larry Drury, Ryan Luechtefeld, Troy Robertson, Greg Beekman, Scott Schulte, Mike Carlson and Rich Sauget; Front Row – Brad Mills, Joel Karsten, Coach Michael Lofton, Matt Morris and Duffy Dunn.

FYC Investigates the Secret Service What does a young guy wearing dark glasses and an earbud have in common with a dedicated government employee working to safeguard your ATM card at Schnucks? In our story, the person is one and the same: United States Secret Service Special Agent Timothy R. Reboulet. Agent Reboulet grew up in West County, graduated from Mizzou and served two years with the St. Louis County Police before being accepted into the Secret Service. His last assignment prior to returning to St. Louis was with the Presidential Protective Division; now he is in charge of the Network Intrusion Program (cyber fraud) in St. Louis. To hear more about how Tim balances these two disparate duties, you’ll want to come to the Forever Young Club luncheon on Friday, June 20, 11:30 a.m. at the West Clubhouse.
