O
n May 16, I had the honor of becoming the 98th President of the Missouri Athletic Club. I’m humbled by the opportunity. Briefly on me, I’m a banker at Great Southern Bank. My wife Jill and I have three children, Madison, Molly Kate and Will. Our family frequently uses our great Club. You’ll most likely see me Downtown with friends or clients, enjoying lunch or at the Jack Buck Grill before a Cardinals game – or out West with my family - Tuesday is “work-out/dinner” night. You’ll see Jill working out with West Fitness Manager and Personal Trainer Paul Helfrich, and our girls are proud members of the MAC Swim Team - Go Penguins! Please introduce yourself and ask me any questions about our Club. I look forward to meeting many members this year.
As has been the tradition for 100 years, we recently said goodbye to the five Governors who have served this Club well beyond the call of duty. President Joel Karsten, First Vice-President David Weiss, Second VicePresident Chris Michalak, Treasurer Gordon Bush and Secretary Dan Fusz deserve great credit for the improvements at the Club in the last three years. Membership has stabilized, our financial position has improved dramatically and we are investing in our Club. The future is bright – Thanks, Boys! Speaking of the future, congratulations to the
recently elected Governors; Bob Barnes, Peter Dunn, Christopher Hyams, Brent Kaniecki and Beau Reinberg. This diverse group is already working hard to improve the member experience. There are many special events at our Club and one of my favorites took place last month. The Father-Daughter banquet was a special evening for all in attendance. Daughters were treated to accommodations fit for a princess, including horse-drawn carriage rides, a delicious dinner and dancing in the Ballroom. See page 18 for photos! As our children finish the school year, it’s time to focus on keeping them busy. Our West Clubhouse has a calendar full of events for our youngest MAC members! Camp MAC, Specialty Sports Camps, Swim & Dive Team, Dive-In Movies or just a casual day at the pool will keep our youngsters active and provide memories to last a lifetime. My girls can’t wait for the Penguins swim season! Special thanks to our Head Swim Coach Lauren Fonseca and our Parent Rep Kelly Becker, who both do a tremendous job! If you get a chance, stop by one of our home swim meets this summer! Of course summer in St. Louis means one thing - Cardinals baseball! It certainly looks like another great summer of memories at

Busch Stadium. No other Club in St. Louis can offer what the MAC offers - convenient parking; an upscale bar and restaurant named after Cardinals legend Jack Buck, where you can fill up and meet friends before hopping on the shuttle and enjoying a complimentary ride to and from the game. The Downtown Clubhouse also serves as the perfect place to celebrate our nation’s Independence Day. The outside of the Downtown Clubhouse is front row for the VP Parade. If you’re out West, you can enjoy a delicious barbecue at the 4th of July Pool party! The MAC is at the center of the action all summer long. Be sure to book rooms early for the 4th of July parade! Golf season is in full swing. You can hit the links at one of the outstanding private clubs where MAC members and guests can play. The highlight of the season will be the 6th Annual MAC Golf Classic on Aug. 26 at Glen Echo Country Club. Round-up a team to enjoy a fun day of golf and camaraderie to benefit the MAC Preservation Foundation. Last month I hosted 10 out of town managers at the Club and they all came away impressed by the rooms, level of service and the amenities. When you have guests in town, or you’re staying for an event Downtown, please consider spending the night in one of our renovated rooms and enjoying a wonderful night at the MAC. I’m looking forward to serving a wonderful membership and Club this year.
See you at the Club!

The Results are In! Barnes, Dunne, Hyams,
President-Elect John Bugh with outgoing President Joel Karsten. The Missouri Athletic Club has many traditions, but election day is arguably the most unique. No private club in America holds an election quite like the MAC. From the gauntlet to a day of old-fashioned campaigning, Club spirit fills the Downtown Clubhouse at the MAC election. On May 2, election festivities got rolling in the afternoon when enthusiastic campaign workers lined the voting gauntlet poised to persuade voters to choose their candidate. Later in the day, members were treated to a complimentary dinner. The camaraderie and socializing culminated with the announcement of the winners at 8 p.m. When the dust settled, MAC members elected five new governors to serve on the 15-member Board. Elected to the 2015-16 class of the Board of Governors were Bob Barnes, Peter Dunne, Christopher Hyams, Brent Kaniecki and Beau Reinberg. Barnes is President and Owner of BCN Management Consulting. He has been a member since 2004 and has been an active member of the Apollos, FYC, Wall Street table, MAC Tennis Team, MAC Charitable Society for Children and an election committee volunteer.
Freshly minted Governors Peter Dunne, Bob Barnes, Beau Reinberg, Christopher Hyams and Brent Kaniecki. Dunne is an Attorney at Pitzer Snodgrass, P.C. He joined the MAC in 1987 and has been active in the Apollos and on the 5th Floor, Downtown. Hyams is a Partner at G.S. & S., Inc. has been a member since 2009, and a Platinum Partner since 2012. He extensively uses both Clubhouse fitness centers, squash, dining and social functions. Kaniecki is the Director at Inflexion, LLC. He has been a member since 1997. He has served on the Athletic Committee, Nominating Committee, Membership Committee and was the Chairman of the Basketball Committee. Reinberg is a Partner and Chief Operating Officer at the Atlas Companies. He has been a member since 2005. He as served on the Associates Committee, Membership Committee, Ethics and By-Laws Committee and played in the basketball leagues. In late May, the new governors were sworn into office and began their three-year terms. Also, the new class of senior officers who were elected in March began their one-year positions. The new senior officers are President John Bugh, First Vice-President Judith Hanses, Second Vice-President Mary Frontczak, Secretary Terry Hammer, and Treasurer Troy Robertson.

MAC Hospitality
MAC Champions
Champions of the Club are those who go above and beyond to fill the three Buckets (membership, rooms and catering), and help the MAC prosper. Each month, the Cherry Diamond will feature one of our many MAC Champions.
MAC Champion: Brett Pantanzi
1. How do you use the Club? I use the Club for fitness, business, socializing, tennis and family time (pool or gym). 2. How did you get involved with recruiting new members? I really don’t know - I’m just interested in growing the MAC and sharing with prospective members the benefits of our unique athletic club. 3. How many members have you recruited? I’ve successfully recruited three or four new members. 4. How do you utilize the MAC catering department? I have used the Catering Department for the Nolan Investment Banking (my firm) fantasy football draft. The event was a huge success. The MAC offered a unique and sophisticated venue for our draft party. We hosted around 40 guests who were associated with the 11 other professional service firms in our league. 5. How do you utilize the MAC overnight guest rooms? We plan to use the overnight rooms during this year’s VP fair celebration. t

Diamond Dialogue: Crawford King – A Legacy of Tributes
Crawford King comes from a lineage of monument creators. His company, Pohl and King Monument, Co. engraved the commemorative bricks that are displayed in the Preservation Gallery, located in the lobby of the Downtown Clubhouse. Tributes are his livelihood, so when he heard Winston Churchill tribute World War II veterans, it was especially memorable for him. King was a student at Westminster College when Churchill gave his final speech in the United States, at the institution. Also in attendance were 25 gold star mothers. When a child was killed in the war, the mothers received a gold star to put in the window as a tribute to their fallen sons. Churchill greeted each of them and knew the names and places where each man was killed. He personally thanked each mother for her son’s sacrifice to the world. Other memorable times for King at the MAC included his 10

anniversary parties, which he celebrated with his wife of 62 years, Marion. The couple often attended parties thrown by friends, so when Marion suggested they attend, he thought nothing of it. It turned out to be a surprise party for their anniversary. King joked, “I went thinking I was going to be drinking on them. It turned out everyone was drinking on me!” The King family continues making memories at the MAC, often attending Easter brunch at the Downtown Clubhouse. The memories they have shared at the MAC will last a lifetime, and start traditions that will be passed from generation to generation. The King family is one of many MAC families who has, in their case quite literally, built a monument of stories, traditions and celebrations at the MAC.
General Manager
From the General Manager’s Desk Wally Smith
Dear Members: This time of year is always met with mixed emotions on my part. I’ve gotten close and used to working with five terrific Board of Governors/MAC Officers. It seems that just as we get the communications flowing and the work underway, we see these schooled veterans assume the role of Past Governors and move on to their next thing. There will of course be the next thing for all of these individuals because they are leaders, workers, volunteers and your fellow members who care and stepped up to make a difference. These four outgoing Governors and our Past-President began their term of office in May of 2010, just as the economy tanked and discretionary spending dried up as the country battened down the hatches. To say they were dealt a challenging hand would be an understatement, and in my opinion, they played it masterfully. Tough decisions were the order of the day as they lead the way and brought us to our next chapter. I lift my hat to Governors Gordon Bush, Dan Fusz, Chris Michalak, David Weiss and PastPresident Joel Karsten. You gentlemen lead the way as the Club survived and is now poised to thrive once again due to your hard work and determination.
But like I’ve witnessed so many times, these five gentlemen now share the MAC in a unique way known only to them. As each member of the class of 2013 will tell you, the friendships made during their three years are strong and the bond-molded, lifelong –That is the best part and what it’s all about! That’s how it works again and again. Five new Governors are elected from five walks of life. Three short years later, deep friendships and camaraderie are instilled. So as we transition, my deep thanks to those moving on for your time, energy and commitment to the Missouri Athletic Club. This transition sets the stage for our incoming class of Officers, our raising sophomore class and our freshmen class that are moving into their Governing roles. These are exciting times for all and the work is just getting started, once again. It appears this next chapter will begin under more favorable conditions than the class of 2013 encountered, but, the challenges are still many. As the pages turn, our incoming class will bond and lead the way three years from now. And they too will look back on their years served as equally rewarding, time well spent with deep friendships made along the way. As President John Bugh and his class
takes office, be assured that we are once again surrounded by excellent stewards of your Club. His class is superb, and brings abundant energy and smarts. So now that the election is complete for the year, the next order of business is my favorite – Budgets, which are a real eye openers for many. As a point of interest, the MAC is your Club and at the same time, a twenty million dollar per-year business supporting 300 employee families +/-. We have multiple businesses within our business and approximately 410,000 square feet of Clubhouse space. Budget time is planning time, and the systems we have in place call for updating the agenda for the new fiscal year. Once the agenda is set, we will allocate the resources, activate the work and of course let you all know where we are as we go. That’s the accountability part, and where your trust and support are earned. I hope everyone is enjoying elements of last year’s plan, which included our new athletic equipment and the updated pool area, among others. Stay tuned to see what’s next on the agenda, and go ahead and invite one of your friends into the MAC membership this summer! We can never forget that membership bucket and the importance of keeping it at healthy levels. See you at the Club, -Wally

Save the Date for Jimmy Buffet Night
End the summer in Margaritaville! The Jack Buck Grill will feature a Caribbean buffet and live entertainment in a fun, tropical atmosphere. Wear your favorite Hawaiian shirt and head down to the Club! Jimmy Buffet Night Saturday, Aug. 24 6 – 10 p.m. Call 314-539-4417 for reservations.
At a young age I remember my first Chef screaming at me, while throwing a plate in my general direction, because of an avocado had a hint of brown on it. “If you wouldn’t feed it to your mother or eat it yourself, don’t serve it to my customers!” This has been my constant philosophy since that day. Every true culinarian desires to use the best products possible available to them. In the last few months we have made numerous changes out West. We are using much higher quality products from reputable sources. Our Salmon is all natural and sustainable. The salmon is not administered antibiotics, hormones or any kind of chemicals. The salmon we purchase is much higher in omega 3’s and protein than wild caught salmon. It is also sustainable and does not endanger or inhibit the breeding and habitat of wild salmon. The end product you receive is a richer and healthier piece of fish! In the last few years, ground beef has made the news an alarming number of times for various additives and contaminates. I can’t in good conscience serve a product that I don’t trust. West hamburger meat is hand-ground daily from U.S.D.A. grade choice beef tenderloin and U.S.D.A. Certified Angus Beef brisket. It’s a
great tenderloin burger! I challenge you to find a higher quality hamburger, with that much attention to detail, given at that price point. “Good bread is the most fundamentally satisfying of all foods; and good bread with fresh butter, the greatest of feasts.” – James Beard. We switched bakeries last month Your bread is top 10 in the country!!! USA Today named Companion one of the “Top 10 Artisan Bakeries” in the country. Companion boasts fresh, neverfrozen bread without any additives and preservatives. Breads that are made with only unbleached or organic whole grain flours, water, sea salt and natural leavening - That’s it! What a difference does it make in our sandwiches and burgers! I am excited to introduce new and exciting menu items to the membership! We continue to strive for excellence every day, and every day we are making positive changes. I can’t wait to see where we will be in my next six months here at the wonderful MAC! See you at the Club, Grant Higgs ghiggs@mac-stl.org

t. Louis has a soccer tradition that is unrivaled by any city in America. The Gateway City is regarded as the soccer capital of the U.S. That reputation dates back to 1950, when a group of St. Louis boys led the United States to a shocking upset of England in the World Cup. Later, Saint Louis University would dominate the college soccer world throughout much of the 1960s and 1970s. The Billikens ten (10) national championships are an NCAA record. Local players like Taylor Twellmann, Pat Noonan, Steve Ralston, Lori Chalupny and Chris Klein have all gone on to successful pro careers.

10 TIPS FOR PUBLIC SPEAKING (PART 2 OF 2) By: (No author – material taken with permission from Toastmasters International.)
Last month, MAC Toastmasters shared five proven tips on how to control your nervousness with speaking. As promised, the other five proven tips are below: 6. Visualize yourself giving your speech. Imagine yourself speaking, your voice loud, clear and confident. Visualize the audience clapping – it will boost your confidence. 7. Realize that people want you to succeed. Audiences want you to be interesting, stimulating, informative and entertaining. They’re rooting for you.
8. Don’t apologize for any nervousness or problem – the audience probably never noticed it. 9. Concentrate on the message – not the medium. Focus your attention away from your own anxieties and concentrate on your message and your audience. 10. Gain experience. Mainly, your speech should represent you — as an authority and as a person. Experience builds confidence, which is the key to effective speaking. A Toastmasters club can provide the experience you need in a safe and friendly environment. For more information on MAC Toastmasters, please contact Bryan Schwarz at 314-304-7036 or bschwarz71@sbcglobal.com.

Mark Hurd is this month’s featured artist in the MAC Art Gallery, at the Downtown Clubhouse. Hurd was born and raised in St. Charles, Mo., and became interested in drawing and painting at a very early age. After high school, he attended Washington University Fine Arts School and graduated with a B.F.A. in Graphic Communications in 1987. Working as an art director for 22 years, he began experimenting with photography, drawing and manipulating hand drawn shapes of color on the computer, where he created the “pop” style that has similar look to a silk screen or Japanese wood block print. Major artistic influences include Bill Kohn, his drawing and painting professor at Washington University, as well as Andy Warhol, Vincent van Gogh and Edward Hopper. Mark’s work can be seen at several galleries in Chicago and St. Louis as well as numerous private collections. Legacies, and Great Friends, from the Board
Generations at the MAC: Amelia Dino with her grandfathers, Craig Nafziger and Len Dino, Sr., and her father, Len Dino, Jr. at the Father-Daughter banquet.
Tripp Zumwalt and Len Dino, Jr. enjoy a laugh and a cocktail at the West Clubhouse.
Imagine you’re 10-years-old and your father takes you to the MAC to see bears and acrobats. Even better, you experience that with your best friend, whom you met at the MAC. In 1979, the MAC hosted the annual Father-Son Banquet, and there were dancing bears and acrobats. This event landed the cover of the January 1979 Cherry Diamond. Flash forward 34 years and you’re still the best of friends, taking your own children to MAC events. That’s the story of Len Dino and Tripp Zumwalt, who met at the MAC when their fathers, Leonard S. Dino, Sr., and M.R. (Dick) Zumwalt, Jr., served in the same class of the MAC Board of Governors. Sit in a room with Dino and Zumwalt and you can see the camaraderie that the MAC is all about. They have grown up together in the Club. They spoke fondly of the Father-Son Banquet experiences they shared. They looked forward to it every year. There were prizes, entertainment and dancing bears. “It was like Christmas to us,” Zumwalt said. “It was the greatest thing.” Dino shared similar sentiments about the Boy’s classes, which were held on the 5th Floor on Saturday mornings. They would swim, play in the gym and practice judo with Master Shin. They both shared a laugh, remarking that Master Shin “was tough!” At the time, the boys each had a locker on the pool deck. “My key number was B163,” Zumwalt said. After a morning in the gym, the boys would have lunch on the 4th Floor. They would watch old Frankenstein movies, dine on giant cheeseburgers and choose from a bar filled with strawberry, vanilla and chocolate milkshakes. “I’ll take three (milkshakes),” Zumwalt joked. “It was great!” Dino would go to sleep on Friday nights in the clothes that he would wear to the Boy’s classes, so he could get up and go straight to the MAC. “I was so excited to go to the MAC on Saturdays. I looked forward to it all week,” Dino said. “When we were kids, there was French candy in the lobby display cases,” Zumwalt said, with an almost mischievous smile. “We would sign our dad’s name on the chits and take home a bunch of candies! It was great! At $5 apiece, we can understand why our dads would get so mad at us! I

thought they could have killed us.” They both chuckled. They went back and forth nostalgically. “Remember the moose head?” Dino asked. “It was the biggest thing we’d ever seen at the time!” Both Dino and Zumwalt are members of the Club and have been since they were eligible to be associates. “The best time to make an impression of the Club on someone is when they’re children,” Dino said. “Those memories last a lifetime.” Both Dino and Zumwalt now have families of their own. Dino and his wife Carrie have four children, Audrey, Amelia, Trey and Wills. Zumwalt and his wife Allie (who had their wedding reception at the MAC) have two children, Baker and Nina. The kids are active in summer camps and on the swim team. “As much fun as we had growing up at the MAC, it has brought us more enjoyment watching our kids bond at the MAC,” Dino said. Len’s brother Grant and his wife Tiffany are also members and join in on the all of the fun the MAC has to offer. They have built many family traditions around the Club. They come down for the Veiled Prophet parade on the 4th of July. “I used to go the Club with my mom and dad,” Zumwalt said. “Now I attend with my wife.” I might be the member, but she’s very active in Club life. She loves it! The two also remember spending New Year’s Eve at the MAC. Their parents would go to the Gala and the kids would stay in the overnight guest rooms, surely having fun. Now they ring in the New Year with their own children at the West Clubhouse. “The kids like to get together and have fun,” Dino said. Both attend the Father-Daughter Banquet with their daughters every year. “It’s crazy how much she looks forward to it,” Zumwalt said. “I’m sure it won’t last forever and I treasure those moments.” Dino brings his own father to the Father-Daughter Banquet. “It’s always fun to have all three generations at the table,” Dino said. Both of their grandfathers were also members of the MAC. Zumwalt and Dino wish to continue their fathers’ legacies and run for the Board of Governors, together. Both aspire to give back to the Club, which has given them so much. The spirit of camaraderie, that’s what the MAC has always been about, and continues to be, generation after generation. JUNE 2013
