from the president Tradition, community, and culture are words used to describe the Missouri Athletic Club’s key values supported by our three 501(c)3 foundations: Preservation, Sports, and Art. While this statement is frequently emphasized in MAC communications, I thought it would be beneficial to delve into the deeper meaning associated with these words and further explain the impact the foundations have on the Club and our community. The MAC Preservation Foundation’s mission is to preserve and memorialize the history and architecture of St. Louis, with particular focus on the Downtown Clubhouse. Since the moment the MAC opened its doors in 1903, it has operated at 405 Washington Avenue. Many believe the MAC is the longest operating business in the same location in the City of St. Louis, quite a testament to the Club’s deep roots in St. Louis. Unfortunately, the original clubhouse was destroyed in March 1914 in one of the most devastating fires in St. Louis history. However, within weeks, members rallied to begin rebuilding a more elaborate clubhouse in the same location. The Downtown Clubhouse we enjoy today reopened in March 1916. For more than 100 years, business, professional and civic leaders and their families have been frequenting the Downtown Clubhouse, creating memories and traditions we still enjoy today. As with any well‐loved 100+ year‐old building, the Downtown Clubhouse has experienced its fair share of wear and tear and requires constant renovation, not just for keeping up with trends in aesthetics and facilities, but also for maintenance and operational improvements. For example, in 2015, the MAC partnered with the City’s Set the PACE St. Louis program in conjunction with Trane to upgrade the aging HVAC system and comply with green energy initiatives. Monies from the Preservation Foundation allowed the MAC to complete this $2.3 million capital project without pulling from the Club’s general revenue. While this project was not glamorous, it was certainly extremely beneficial, and thanks to an increase in energy efficiency continues to pay financial dividends. On that note, I cannot emphasize enough that charitable gifts to the Preservation Foundation benefit both clubhouses and the Club as a whole. Using Preservation Foundation funds for capital projects at the Downtown Clubhouse frees up other dollars in the capital budget for projects at the West Clubhouse. 4 F Cherry Diamond F APR 2019

Other capital improvement projects and renovations from the last few years include: overnight guest rooms, 5M functional training room, 11th floor group exercise room, men’s and women’s restrooms, indoor pool, weight rooms at both clubhouses, the West Clubhouse parking lot and roof along with the 1903 bar, dining room and patio. Towards the end of this fiscal year, the Club will begin renovating the Jack Buck Grille and launch Phase Two of the West Clubhouse fitness expansion and renovation project. In addition to capital projects, our foundations enable other important Club initiatives and support the MAC’s role in the St. Louis community. The mission of the Sports Foundation is to encourage and recognize outstanding achievements in the fields of sports and athletics. The MAC’s tradition of supporting athletic achievement dates back when the MAC was founded in preparation for the debut of the 1904 World’s Fair and Olympics in St. Louis. Athletes from the MAC competed in boxing, wrestling, water polo, swimming and track at the Olympic Games that year. Today, in addition to supporting member athletes, fitness enthusiasts and a culture of friendly competition and camaraderie, the Club supports national and local athletes through events such as the Hermann Trophy banquet, Jack Buck Sports Awards, College Basketball Awards, and High School Soccer All‐Star Games. These prestigious events and others have helped solidify the MAC as a premier athletic club. While the MAC enjoys the recognition that comes with these events, more importantly, the Club and its members enjoy a long history of philanthropy and giving back to the St. Louis community through scholarships and donations from the Sports Foundation. This month, the Sports Foundation will present a check to PGA Reach, a foundation created by Ozzie Smith to positively impact the lives of youth, military, and diverse populations by enabling access to PGA Professionals and the game of golf. Recently, with the support of the Sports Foundation, members also donated basketball hoops to local Habitat for Humanity homes. Additionally, the MAC’s Charitable Society for Children, an extension of the Sports Foundation, annually donates to three local children’s charities. Since 2005, the MAC has donated more than $325,000 to over 40

children’s charities in the St. Louis community. This year, the MAC has supported Books for STL Kids, Jackie Joyner-Kersee Foundation, and Midtown Community Services. Lastly, the Foundation for the Arts has a mission to assemble, collect, commission, display and maintain significant works of the arts. In 1918, the MAC purchased its first painting, Windswept Meramec River, by Thomas Barnett. Starting in the 1940s, the members made a conscientious effort to grow the Club’s art collection, which today, is worth several million dollars. The Club supports a local artist each quarter by displaying their work in the lobbies of both clubhouses. For the second consecutive summer, MAC youth can participate in an art camp at the West Clubhouse sponsored by the Foundation for the Arts and get a taste for the culture and tradition that the MAC values. This summary barely scratches the surface on how the foundations are integral in supporting the Club’s values for the long term, but hopefully, it helps paint a picture of the magnitude of possibilities when properly supported. Simply stated, gifts to the foundations impact the MAC and the community for the long term. Members give by joining the All-Star Team of monthly givers and contributing on their statement each month; by remembering the MAC in their estate plan; by making a one‐time gift toward a project; or by sponsoring or donating to an event that supports the foundations such as the Golf Tournament or Gala. In the past year, Past President Bill Conway and former member Charles Shive each left $25,000 gifts to the foundations in their wills. Additionally, just last month, a member’s foundation accepted our grant proposal to fund a portion of the cost for cleaning and refurbishing the exterior of the Downtown Clubhouse. This will be a fantastic gift. Look for more information on that in the coming months. For more information about our foundations and giving options for you to consider contact Cynthia Goudy (314-797-5474 or cgoudy@ mac-stl.org). Cynthia or Larry Absheer can discuss various avenues of giving and ensure your gift supports the Club’s values of tradition, community, and culture for years to come.

from the general manager The MAC wouldn’t be what it is without a number of great teams of members and staff working jointly on some very exciting initiatives that are now underway. First, I want to give a shout out to the MAC’s Women’s Initiative Group for the hard work put into their signature event, the Women of Distinction Luncheon, especially the event committee led by co-chairs Jodi Petersen and Carrie Burggraf. On April 12, the MAC will honor seven local women who have been revolutionary in business, civic engagement, philanthropic programs and mentorship. In addition to honoring these women (learn more about them on page 30), the program will include a panel discussion led by retired television journalist, Betsey Bruce. The panel features some high-profile women, including Carolyn Kindle-Betz, President of the Enterprise Holdings Foundation; Adrian Bracy, CEO for YWCA Metro St. Louis; Romaine Seguin, President of UPS Global Freight Forwarding; and our very own Cheri McLaughlin, President and owner of Sparks Milling Digital and MAC Governor. We’re anticipating a lively and thought-provoking discussion, which is sure to appeal to all audiences. If you haven’t already, support the MAC’s Women’s Initiative Group and the Club’s effort to support women leaders in the community by reserving a table at this great event. Following this event, the MAC’s Women’s Initiative Group is spear-heading its second annual Women’s Wellness Week the first week of May leading up to Mother’s Day. New this year, co-chairs Jen Pawlitz and Genna Pennington have crafted a bingo card to encourage participation in the week’s events. Women who get “bingo” will receive a complimentary glass

of house wine and be entered for a chance to win a new yoga outfit. More information about Women’s Wellness Week is available on page 18. Review the schedule of events and invite a friend to participate too; the more the merrier! Another thanks goes out to Angie Minges for leading the Women’s Initiative Group for the second consecutive year and to Katie Maurer for helping bring these events to fruition. Just a few days after the Women of Distinction Luncheon, in partnership with the United States Basketball Writers Association, the MAC will honor college basketball’s best on April 15. Following last year’s largely successful, sell-out event, the USBWA contracted with the MAC to host their event at our Downtown Clubhouse for the next four years. We’re excited to host and honor the male and female players of the year, freshman of the year, and coach of the year at this prestigious event, which will once again be a sellout. Special thanks to President-Elect Kevin Cantwell for chairing this event for the second year, the dedicated committee members and Jim Wilson for making this event such a success. Those who were unable to get a seat at the event can watch the live stream from the MAC’s website or Facebook page. We are also working on plans for Phase Two of the West Clubhouse’s fitness expansion and the Jack Buck Grille renovation. We hope to finalize plans for these spaces in April, May, and June. Then, we’ll set the budgets in July and August, and if the funding requirements are finalized, we could start work in or around September. I’ve received many inquiries about the Jack Buck Grille renovation and want to clarify that the existing footprint will stay the same, but will receive a new face, which will include a good

scrub, new furnishings and carpet. Our interior designer, Brenda Jones, who designed our highly-praised 1903 bar is leading the design team for the Jack Buck Grille refresh. She has great ideas on ways to take some of the dated aesthetics and make them feel alive again. I’m excited to share the designs with you once complete. All of our efforts, from planning extraordinary events to renovating facilities, are done to improve the overall member experience. Our member retention rate is on the rise, and we think this is attributed to the Club offering you what you want. Happy and engaged members, stay members, and hopefully, invite their friends to join our Platinum Club. To ensure we’re staying on track, we want your input and feedback. There are two ways to contribute. First, drop us a line by filling out a contact us form, which is accessible from the public and private homepages of our website. Second, reach out to staff or a Board member to get involved on a committee. New committees will be appointed at the start of the new Board term in May. Our committees have a strong influence on the future of the Club, and these members who participate make up our “farm team” for future Board members. By continuing to have a great team of members and staff working together, we’ll continue tackle exciting initiatives and bring them to fruition. These are exciting times at the MAC, and I could not be prouder to play my part in the awesome place. See you at the Club,

Wally Smith, General Manager Missouri Athletic Club

Before my retirement in 2007, I practiced law with my father’s firm downtown from 1976. My practice was largely transactional – tax, pension, business and estate planning, with some trial and appellate work. I attended Kirkwood public schools, graduating in 1968, then Oberlin College where I majored in European History with a minor in French, lettered three years in varsity soccer and was team co-captain my senior year (1972); then University of Missouri School of Law. I joined the Mac in 1976, dropped out in 1988, and rejoined in 1998. My father and uncle were members for many years. I have used and enjoyed the fifth floor mostly playing handball, and some racket ball and basketball. More recently, I have become a regular swimmer. Like all of us, I have made many good friends here. I grew up in Kirkwood, in Grace Episcopal parish. I have served on the board of Open Space Council since 1978, twice as secretary, and twice as president; served on the board of trustees of Thomas Jefferson School for a number of years, the board of trustees of the Vedanta Society of St. Louis since 1988, and as a leader of the Kirkwood Great Books group. I am comfortable in dealing with financial and investment matters, reviewing financial statements, and understand and executing fiduciary responsibilities. While serving as a governor of this club is an honor, and no doubt a pleasure, it is also a responsibility from which I have shrunk. We need more candidates, and so I am adding my name to the list. If elected, I will serve conscientiously.

Survey Incites Action

Recent Capital Improvements Directly Correlate to Survey Results

In general, the primary comment I hear from members is that Phase One turned out better than they imagined; they expected big improvements, but the finished product blows them away,” said MAC Athletic Director Jeff Tuhro. “I have to remind them that this isn’t the final product. Phase Two is still to come, and everyone is very excited about that.” 16 F Cherry Diamond F APR 2019

In 2017, the Missouri Athletic Club surveyed its members, and in coordination with the Planning Committee, used the results to develop future plans and initiatives for the Club. Upon reviewing the results, it was immediately obvious that improvements to the fitness facilities at both clubhouses were a top priority. When asked in an open-ended question, “What is the single most glaring “deficiency” in the existing MAC facilities?” a few responses such as “Fitness facilities are incredibly overcrowded and antiquated. They are in desperate need of renovation,” seemed to summarize the feelings of many. Specific to the Downtown Clubhouse, one member commented that the “Downtown fitness facilities badly need an upgrade. Virtually unchanged in my 20 years at the Club.” After reviewing the survey results, the MAC’s Athletic Department staff worked with the Club’s maintenance team to address facility and equipment concerns. Within a few months, the Club’s maintenance team was hard at work converting the golf simulator room on 5M into a Functional Training Room to be used for personal training, group exercise classes, and other workouts. The renovated room featured all-new equipment, including TRX straps, a water rowing machine, free weights and a punching bag. Next, in response to comments such as “The 11th floor workout room is in very, very poor shape. While it gets used, it is not consistent with a Platinum Club of America facility,” the team tackled the judo room on the 11th floor of the Downtown Clubhouse and converted it into a Group Exercise Room. The MAC’s maintenance team gutted and rebuilt the roughly 2,200 square foot space with new paint, lighting, ventilation fans, HVAC, flooring, mirrors, sound system and fitness equipment. The equipment included free weights, a TRX system, water rowing machine, AstroTurf strip for weighted cardio exercises, a variety of punching bags, and more. The room is primarily used for group exercise classes and personal training sessions. Simultaneous to these projects, the Planning Committee worked with an architect and contractor to develop the two-phase fitness expansion and renovation project at the West Clubhouse to address comments such as “Fitness facility - outdated, small confined spaces, not enough equipment (free weights, mats, gliders, etc.) for all fitness areas. Not enough times offered for spin and yoga. Not enough space in the West Clubhouse free weight/lifting area. Everyone is on top of each other, and the equipment is dated.” and “West Clubhouse fitness facilities — the weight area is too small, and in general, the hallways and water area

are congested. Need to convert the championship racquetball court into world-class weights and cardio.” To address these concerns, during Phase One, the stadium racquetball court was removed to expand the existing weight room. The project included a full renovation and remodel of the walls, flooring, equipment and layout. For those who said, “I wish there was a separate room for yoga classes,” in the mezzanine above the weight room, the Club added a Mind and Body Studio designed specifically for yoga and barre classes. The Club also hired additional instructors and expanded its class offerings and times. Since these expanded and renovated facilities opened to members, the Club has seen an increase in facility usage, class participation and personal training and received a wealth of positive feedback. MAC Athletic Director Jeff Tuhro shared that 506 members checked into the new yoga and barre studio within the first month that it opened. After four months, the number of visitors reached 1,835 members. “We have really enjoyed seeing members back in the fitness facilities that we hadn’t seen awhile,” said Tuhro. Some members have shared with him that they have dropped their secondary memberships at local fitness centers or yoga studios and are now taking full advantage of the MAC’s facilities and programs. Providing the facilities and amenities that appeal to members to prevent them from going elsewhere was one goal of these renovation projects. Another one of the primary goals in completing these renovations was to move the needle so that the members who rated their experience and the MAC’s facilities as “good” would now rate it as “very good,” and the “very goods” would become “excellent.” “The positive feedback we have received makes me feel very confident that the majority of our members now view our fitness facilities as very good or excellent,” said Tuhro. One member noted on a comment card outside the new yoga and barre studio that “I have taken yoga and barre classes all over the U.S., and Paige is by far the best instructor I’ve ever had.” In reference to another instructor a member said, “Kathy is amazing; what a great addition to the staff! Well educated and very helpful.” These comments are consistent with feedback that Tuhro has received. “In general, the primary comment I hear from members is that Phase One turned out better than they imagined; they expected big improvements, but the finished product blows them away,” he said. “I have to remind them that this isn’t the final product. Phase Two is still to come, and everyone is very excited about that.” Next, the Club will address Phase Two of the West Clubhouse fitness expansion and renovation project and renovate the Jack Buck Grille at the Downtown Clubhouse. Both of these projects are in the planning phase. If all goes according schedule, plans will be finalized by June; budgets will be set in July and August; and renovations will get underway in September. Phase Two designs will include improvements to the existing cardio and fitness class areas as well as adding specialty training rooms and a new spinning studio. During the Jack Buck Grille refresh, the existing footprint will remain the same, but the space will receive a good scrub, new furnishings and carpet. In addition to fitness facility renovations, the Club has also renovated overnight guest rooms, the men’s and women’s restrooms, and the indoor pool at the Downtown Clubhouse since the completion of the survey. These renovation projects are all part of an ongoing effort to ensure that the MAC offers the facilities and amenities that appeal to members with the goal of retaining happy and engaged members, attracting new members, and maintaining the Club’s designation as a Platinum Club of America. Tennis Tip by Scott Stutz

Preparation is very important with any shot in tennis, especially the volley! 1. Ready position: Position feet roughly a shoulder and a half apart facing the opponent with flexed knees. F This position is the most utilized starting posture in all sports! F Set the racquet in front at a 45-degree angle with arms forward.

Tim Van Rhein Makes Tennis His Workout In 2000, Tim Van Rhein joined the MAC to play basketball, but got the tennis “bug” right away. Tim got into tennis at the MAC through the USTA avenue. He started at a 3.5 rating and currently has a 4.5 rating. Tim is also a two-time Men’s Singles Club Champion. He is joined by his wife Jess and two daughters who all play regularly at the MAC through USTA and clinics at the MAC. Recently, Tim has made an effort to practice regularly and has leveraged his limited time by hitting with MAC tennis pro Scott Stutz. “I like the flexible schedule and can get a fantastic workout in an hour,” said Tim. “I'm trying to develop consistency to hang with the younger players I encounter during match play. I enjoy being pushed and have noticed definite improvements in my game, especially the backhand.” Diamond ad #2a N_Layout 1 9/12/18 AM and Pagean 7 integral part of their Cherry Tennis has been great game for Tim’s8:52 family membership at the Club.

2. Grip: The type of hold on the racquet is known as a continental grip or hammer grip. 3. Contact point: The meeting between the racket face and the ball will happen in front of you, and you will have a good look at the shot. 4. Receiving: Once in the ready position, you are ready to receive the ball. Traditional volleys are hit with almost no backswing. Whether the forehand or backhand, the racquet will "set" to one side or the other without a big shoulder or trunk turn. If time allows, a step forward will happen next, and you will meet the ball as if saying "stop.” This step is crucial! If the legs are not used, players tend to reach and swing at the ball, which is a big no-no. The feeling of using just the forearm will be present. 5. Follow-through: There is a minimal follow-through for this shot since there is not much of a swing. After contact, your racquet will extend forward in a jab-like motion and then return to the ready position to prepare for another shot. Follow these steps, and prepare to volley!

was to establish an organization to help lift the troops’ spirits after the violence they had experienced during the war. That organization is the American Legion. It was in St. Louis that they officially adopted and approved their preamble and constitution as well as adopted their name, which occurred at the MAC. Today, the American Legion recognizes St. Louis as its birthplace and is home to several Posts, including one that has been hosted at the MAC since the early 1970s. The American Legion will commemorate the 100th anniversary of their founding in St. Louis at Soldier’s Memorial downtown on May 9.
