from the president The facilities at the Missouri Athletic Club are officially closed, but the spirit of the MAC is alive and well. The MAC was founded in 1903. More than 117 years ago, civic leaders organized and incorporated this prestigious Club in downtown St. Louis. Since then, we had World War I, the Great Depression, World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam, the Gulf Wars, 9/11, stock market crashes, tax law changes that affected the Club and other calamities outside of our control. During those times, the MAC stood tall and today continues to stand tall and will remain strong. We will come out of this worldwide catastrophe stronger and better. We are the MAC, and we need all of us to stay vigilant and continue to support our Club. The Board of Governors and staff carefully considered all the options and the accompanying risks. Difficult decisions had to be made. The closing of the facility was easy compared to the decision made with employees. On Thursday, March 19, the Clubhouses were closed due to recommendations by local health professionals, CDC and city officials. I spoke to many members who told me they understand the need to do this and will support the Board and staff. Based on what we have been told, the projected opening of the facilities to the members is Monday, April 6. I am skeptical of this date. By the time you read this article, everything we know could have completely changed. During this period, we will continue to monitor the circumstances and will communicate all updates via email, social media and the Club website. The human toll of the COVID-19 pandemic is real and personal. The Missouri Athletic Club is made up of more than 2,400 members and 400plus employees. The shutdown has caused a total lack of business and work for most of the employees. We had to furlough many of the staff members. It is time for the members to rally and not run. We may use the term “staff,” but for most of us, they are friends who are fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, sons or daughters. When we walk into our Clubhouses, they greet you with a smile and a hello. Our staff is the premier staff in the region, and to tell them we are shutting down until this crisis is over is heartbreaking. The few staff members who’ve remained have taken a significant pay cut. This pandemic is real.

I have asked Governor Angie Minges to organize a fund drive to raise money to aid our furloughed staff during this time. This is not an assessment or the Holiday Contribution Fund charge that appears on your statement. This is completely voluntary by the members. We hope to have this in your hands well before you are reading this article. Thank you if you have been able to support these amazing people. This is what the MAC does for members and staff. I have been extremely humbled by the many members who have called to offer their support and encouragement for the Board and staff. My inbox has been inundated with positive comments and suggestions on what we can do to get through this time. You, the members, care. Even with the Clubhouses shut down, we do have expenses that need to be paid. Staff has done an amazing job of looking at every line item that can be scaled back. Little things like stopping the newspapers or limiting the number of times the trash is picked up all affect our bottom line. The Club needs to be diligent during this time when many of the revenue-producing sources have been canceled. The Board and staff are looking at our dues. We hope you understand that the dues are just a piece of the financial puzzle of the MAC. If this continues longer than expected, we will reconvene and decide what we can do on the dues. We have two facilities that must be maintained to support our members when we get back. The Board of Governors are members. We completely understand what members experience and pay. This is the last column I will write that honors a Past President. One of my goals this year was to thank the MAC’s “Three Amigos.” I chose Past President Ortbals at the beginning of the year to kick this off. I highlighted Past President Tucci in February, and this month, I end with Past President Don Gunn. Don is the senior Past President still associated with the Club. Don, along with Gerry and Kim, were the originators of the Preservation Foundation. They had the vision to drive the MAC into the future, and what you are seeing today started with their commitment to the Club.

President Gunn has experienced the high and lows of the Club. He has lifetime ties to the Club starting in the youth programs and rising to the Presidency. He represents the best of the MAC. He is us. Stay strong, and we will move forward. Take care of yourself and your loved ones. Please follow the advice of our health care professionals but also, live your life. MAC STRONG.

Kevin Cantwell, President Missouri Athletic Club

PAST PRESIDENT GUNN'S COLUMN FROM 1975

from Governor Angie Minges Due to the current situation with COVID-19, General Manager Wally Smith has been working tirelessly to keep the MAC spirit alive for members and staff. This month, he has decided to turn over his column to Gov. Angie Minges regarding an important message from the Board of Governors. Dear Fellow MAC Members, As many of you have heard, the MAC Board and Management made a difficult decision to furlough over 300 employees after the closure of both Clubhouses due to the current COVID-19 pandemic. As President Cantwell mentioned in his April Cherry Diamond article, “the decision to close the facility was easy compared to the decision made with employees." While our furloughed staff remains on our benefit programs and entitled to unemployment and government assistance, they will be subject to a financial shortfall during the furlough. Many members have reached out asking how they can help our furloughed staff during this difficult time. The Board recognizes our members desire to help as they consider the staff family. The kindness and generosity of our membership is amazing. The MAC is definitely more than just a Club, it is a family. We truly are #MACStrong. Hearing the membership’s concern for our staff, The Board has set up a “MAC COVID-19 Employee Relief Fund” to provide financial assistance to our staff in need. This is a voluntary program for those who wish to help. Your account will NOT automatically be charged. The entire Board of Governors has contributed to this fund. The Board is also asking for your support! Our ask is for members to consider donating to the “MAC COVID-19 Employee Relief Fund.” We understand every member is going through your own difficult times at both home and work. The Board is not asking for a specific amount. Any amount that you feel you can donate is appreciated. Donations will be accepted from Tuesday, March 31 – Monday, April 13, 2020. The donations received will be distributed based on the amount received using the annual Holiday Fund in December algorithm (length of service and number of hours worked). We will begin taking donations in several ways: • Donate via the website article titled MAC COVID-19 Employee Relief Fund. • Donate by credit card through Square. • Mail check to Missouri Athletic Club, Attn: Employee Relief Fund, 405 Washington Ave., St. Louis, Mo. 63102. Make check payable to the Missouri Athletic Club. If you have any questions regarding this voluntary fund, please feel free to contact Angie Minges at 314-368-8058 or email angieminges@gmail.com. Thank you in advance for your generosity and support of the amazing staff of our great Club. Best regards, MAC Board of Governors

SSM Health Physical Therapy Coming to MAC For the first time ever, the MAC will offer in-house physical therapy services. After months of interviews and research, SSM Health has been announced as the physical therapy provider for the MAC’s West Clubhouse. Toward the end of last year, athletic director Jeff Tuhro said that having an in-house physical therapy group will allow for a great relationship to form between the physical therapist and the MAC training staff, helping members get the care they need in a more streamlined fashion. Billy Ferris, PT, DPT, has been in practice in Olivette and will now serve MAC members as the Clubhouses’ physical therapist. Ferris earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Missouri-St. Louis. In 2018, he received his Doctorate of Physical Therapy from South College in Knoxville, Tennessee. At South College, he learned extensive manual therapy skills

to complement properly dosed therapeutic exercise. He believes in providing patients with the tools needed to continue living healthy and pain-free lives long after discharge. He has achieved success in treating a wide range of patient populations including acute/post-surgical pain, injuries involving the upper and lower extremities, and return to work/return to sport. “When members come to me, they’re going to get first-class service and someone who really cares about their wellbeing,” Ferris said. “I’ll be able to assess acute pain and look for preventative measures or different types of disfunction that might be a problem later down the road. Being an athlete myself, I know how frustrating it can be when you’re sidelined with any type of injury, whether it’s acute trauma or just a nagging injury.” Physical therapy services will be available at MAC West in April. Keep an eye on MAC social media and website for an official date.

ABOUT SSM HEALTH PHYSICAL THERAPY SSM Health Physical Therapy is the premier provider of comprehensive outpatient rehabilitative services in the St. Louis region. With a network of more than 70 outpatient physical therapy centers located throughout the greater St. Louis metropolitan area, SSM Health Physical Therapy specializes in the treatment of sports, orthopedic, hand and work-related injuries. A team of more than 400 physical, occupational and speech therapists, along with patient service specialists, focus on providing exceptional care and unparalleled customer service. Nearly 90 percent of the therapists hold advanced certifications in their respective specialties. SSM Health Physical Therapy is part of the SSM Health Rehabilitation Network, a joint venture between SSM Health St. Louis and Select Medical.

Train Smarter, Not Harder with Metabolic Assessments In the near future, MAC members will be able to train smarter, not harder with metabolic assessments. The exercise assessments will tell members what their current accurate heart rate zones are so they can exercise in a way to train their

metabolism to burn fat. The resting assessment will tell members accurately how many calories they need through the day to achieve their goals even faster. “Stop trying to guess about your nutrition and cardio heart rate zones,” said

Paul Helfrich. “Come get the real answers today to make tomorrow’s workout really count!” Metabolic assessments will be available at MAC West in April. Keep an eye on MAC social media and website for an official date. Cherry Diamond F APR 2020 F 15

This meant they beat the Los Angeles Athletic Club, the Boulevard Club, the University Club of Chicago and the Detroit Athletic Club. Congratulations to all who helped make this win possible!

How to Stay Healthy During COVID-19 F Wash your hands frequently.

F Avoid large groups of 10 people or more.

F Use hand sanitizer, especially when entering or exiting the Club.

F Please refrain from coming into the Club if you exhibit symptoms of the flu or virus.

F Use a tissue or sleeve to cover your cough or sneeze.

F Be careful when traveling to high-impact areas. The MAC asks that members who have visited Italy or any other known hotspots of the coronavirus, not to visit the Club over the Center for Disease Control’s 14-day quarantine timeline.

F Respect social distancing. Public health officials recommend a distance of 6 feet between you and other people.

The Club is closely monitoring the outbreak of the coronavirus as the situation continues to develop. It is committed to providing members with the latest updates as we continue to put policies in place to protect our MAC community. The MAC understands that for some this could require inconvenience and some sacrifice and appreciates the members’ help in being diligent, patient and kind to one another while navigating this evolving situation. Deep cleaning efforts are taking to place to ensure that both Clubhouses remain healthy environments. Based on CDC recommendations, the Club will avoid big crowds of people and asks that members avoid bringing guests to the Club when it is open. The situation is fluid and subject to change, so communication is essential during this time. The MAC will provide daily email updates, when there are changes to Club operations. Visit the Club website for an updated list of cancellations, postponements and updates. No one can stop the spread of illness, but the MAC is doing its best to keep members and staff healthy.

CRUSHING IT

On Monday, Feb. 25, the West Clubhouse squash courts came alive for the squash exhibition. Squash greats Karim Abdel Gawad (“The Babyfaced Assassin”) took on Gregory Gaultier (“The General.”) After a hard-fought battle, Gawad got the better of Gaultier in a tight 3-1. They

treated the crowd treated to a masterclass of “silky hands, smooth play and explosive movement,” according to Squash Director Alex Ingham. Patrons enjoyed a once-in-alifetime experience by getting to run on the court with the titans themselves. Thanks to John Pruett and Ibis Autism

Research, the presenting sponsors of this exhibition, our the Platinum, Gold and Silver Patrons, along with the amazing members. A heartfelt thanks to those who made this a possibility. Also, thanks again to Karim Abdel Gawad and Greg Gaultier — inspirational and true professionals.

Recently, doubles tennis great Gigi Fernandez wrote an article called “The Perfect Partner.” In the article, she states that good doubles teams are often total opposites regarding their playing style and personality. She points out that these differences can complement one another very effectively. Here are Gigi’s five areas where opposite traits attract to create successful partnerships. 1. The “leader and the follower” — One player who likes to take charge and the other who is happy to follow. 2. The “emotional and the stable” — One player who brings a lot of energy to the team and the other who can reel the emotional one from going too far and calm explosive situations. 3. The “baseliner and the volley-er” — It is often advocated that both players come to the net, but one player with great groundstrokes can really set up their partner who is aggressive at the net. 4. The “forehand and the backhand” — With strengths on the forehand for one and the backhand for the other, partners can then put their strength on the outside for great crosscourt return of serves. 5. The “righty and the lefty” — The first benefit of this is that neither partner needs to serve into the sun. Then, during play, forehands can be down the middle when receiving, which allows for stronger poaching. Added benefits are that opponents see different spins coming at them from the serve and should stay aware of where each players’ forehands and backhands are. It helps to have a partner who plays doubles expertly, but my main criteria for enjoying a doubles game is finding a partner who is supportive of me, understanding of my mistakes, fair and competitive in the best sense of the word. PGA JUNIOR LEAGUE REGISTRATION NOW OPEN The MAC is fielding two teams in the PGA Junior League again this year. PGA Junior League is a fun, social league for kids ages 7-13 to learn the game of golf from LPGA and PGA professionals. Participants play on scramble teams with friends and wear numbered jerseys. They will play approximately three home and three away matches against other teams. Team members rotate in and out of their group through the nine holes. Depending on the number of players on the team at each particular match, children may play three holes or even nine holes. The league will have four practices and six matches against other teams, but note that this is a social play program, not an instruction program. Practices are held on Fridays and matches are typically late on Saturdays and Sundays. The cost is $275. For more information or to register, visit PGAJuniorLeague.com.

AFTER Get ready for spring with freshly repaired men’s and women’s shoes. This month, bring in two pairs of shoes for repair at the same time and get the second pair at half-off. Members can send their shoes Downtown to be repaired by dropping them off at the West Pro Shop. For questions about repairs, contact Don Cross at the Downtown Clubhouse at 314-539-4482. Need to dust off your golf shoes? Enjoy half-off of a golf shoe shine at the West Clubhouse. In the meantime, stop by the West Clubhouse Salon for a fresh haircut and pedicure.

Ready for opening day? Although the Cardinals’ season will be starting later this year, it is never too early to book overnight rooms at the Downtown Clubhouse for friends, family or a good old-fashioned stay-cation! Located within walking distance of Busch Stadium and other St. Louis landmarks, the MAC is the perfect place to stay. Plus, Fredbird approves! Book an overnight room online or call 314-231-7220.

Leaving a Legacy

AFTER

YOUR BENEFICIARIES: Do you know who they are? Do your will, trust and/or beneficiary designations on your investments correctly describe your wishes for division and distribution of your assets among your heirs and beneficiaries if you pass away? When was the last time you thought about who your beneficiaries are? Are your beneficiary designations up to date? Many times, we forget to designate a beneficiary on our mutual funds, our IRAs, 401(k) plans and other investments. And often our beneficiary designations should be updated but we never get around to doing it. Do it now! Because sometimes “later” becomes “never.” To leave a lasting legacy at your Club, please consider designating the MAC or one of its three foundations (Preservation, Sports and Arts) as a beneficiary on one of your retirement/investment accounts, or on a life insurance policy, or as an heir in your will or trust.

Batter Up! Guinness has officially verified that MAC Governor Jeff Moore and Assistant Athletic Director Rick Schneider now hold the world record for the longest game of baseball ever played. On May 26, their team broke the previous record (which they also held) clocking in at 82 hours, 39 minutes and 42 seconds. Through this accomplishment, they also helped raise money for the St. Louis Children’s Hospital Oncology Department to provide treatment to help combat pediatric cancer. The Sports Foundation made a $2,500 donation to support this effort as well.

Bob Croak: My favorite memories are some of the volleyball events that I played in the Club, and my team would win. We were so good that we would advance to some out-of-state events because we were the champion here and whatnot. I use the gym quite a bit too.

CD: What are some of your favorite events that you've attended at the Club? Bob Croak: I remember the boxing tournaments and stuff like that.
