from the president The countdown is on to the New Year, and here are some things to keep in mind as 2018 comes to a close. Capital projects, specifically the fitness renovations at both clubhouses, will be ready to enjoy in the new year. Phase 1A, which included half of the weight room and the new yoga/barre studio, opened during the fall. Another thing to note is that all yoga and barre classes are complimentary through the end of the calendar year. Phase 1B, which encompasses the other half of the weight room, is targeted to open by Jan. 1. The Downtown Clubhouse weight room is also under renovation and scheduled for completion by Jan. 1. The project includes about a $50,000 room renovation to mimic the look and feel of the Functional Training Room on 5M and the Group Exercise Room on the 11th floor and about $160,000 in much-needed new equipment. During the construction period, a temporary weight room has been setup in one of the racquetball courts on 5M. On Jan. 1, 2019, the initiation fee will increase from $1,000 to $1,500 for most membership categories, except the Associates, which will increase from $600 to $750. The increase will coincide with the completion of capital projects, which enhance the value of the MAC membership and are subsequently expected to increase membership numbers, bringing us closer to our 2,500-member cap. New members will have an opportunity to divert a portion of their initiation fee as a charitable contribution to the MAC’s 501(c)3 Preservation Foundation via the All-Star program. For new Associate members, $150 can be diverted to the Preservation Foundation at $12.50 per month for 12 months. For all other new members, $300 can be diverted to the Preservation Foundation for $25 per month for 12 months. We hope the new

members will stay in the program indefinitely, but after the initial 12-month period, it is totally voluntary. If you are considering sponsoring someone for membership, I encourage you to do it now before the Jan. 1 initiation fee increase. Supporting the MAC’s three foundations through the All-Star program and other avenues benefits the Club in many ways. For example, gifts to the Preservation Foundation go towards the Downtown Clubhouse and free up other dollars in the capital budget for improvements at the West Clubhouse. Outside of the All-Star program, other forms of giving such as remembering the MAC in your estate, funding a special project, or gifts towards a capital improvement project are all greatly appreciated and will be put to good use. One of the Club’s biggest fundraisers for the foundations, and dubbed the best party of the year, is scheduled for Feb. 8 – the Foundations’ Gala. Similar to year’s past, this year’s event will include a silent and live auction, outstanding food stations, flowing cocktails, and live music. This year’s band is the very popular Griffin and the Gargoyles. The Club needs auction donation items and event sponsors. Contact Katie Maurer, if you or your business can support in either of those ways. Also, go online and register to attend this fun evening. A couple other foundations-related events are in early 2019, starting with the Hermann Trophy Banquet on Jan. 4. This prestigious event is supported by the Sports Foundations’ mission and honors college soccer’s best male and female athlete. The featured speaker is Dan Flynn, U.S. Soccer’s CEO/Secretary General. Then, on Jan. 18, the MAC’s Charitable Society for Children, which is part of the Sports Foundation, will present checks to its

three 2018 charities (Join Hands ESL, KEEN, Books for Newborns) and announce its three charities for 2019. Annually, the Club gives about $10,000 to each charity. This year, the featured live band at this check presentation event is Butch Wax and the Hollywoods playing hits from the 50s through the 70s. Members of the Dance Club are expected to fill the dance floor in the Missouri Room. Make your reservation to join them. Looking towards the future, the Club is also accepting suggestions for qualified Board of Governor candidates. I have greatly enjoyed my time on the Board and have learned about our Club, including the membership preferences. In that regard, I have received an abundance of well-intentioned advice and suggestions dealing with critical details of the Club such as the ideal napkin color and temperature of the soup. I take all these things to heart along with the deepening friendships I have developed with other members who I otherwise may not have gotten to know. The experience is interesting, but also incredibly rewarding. I encourage anyone who can devote the time and energy to reach out to Past Presidents Troy Robertson or Mike Schoedel or any other members of the Nominating Committee. See page 6 for more information. Enjoy these last few weeks of the year at the Club. The clubhouse décor is outstanding; the train is running in the Downtown Clubhouse lobby (thank you John and Marie); and staff are preparing delicious food and drink for the many holiday events. I wish you and your family lots of MAC camaraderie and happy and safe holidays.

from the general manager The Missouri Athletic Club is always trying to improve its offerings to better appeal to you, the membership. This is done in a variety of ways from making large investments into capital improvement projects to making smaller scale or incremental changes like updating a menu. From the largest to the smallest, the goal is always to uphold our mission of being a “premier” Club and retain our designation as a “Platinum Club of America,” meaning that we rank among the top 5% of private clubs in the United States, which we were just awarded again this year. The best way to know if we’re satisfying these goals is through feedback from you. To gain that feedback, we conduct surveys. For example, we recently surveyed all the members and spouses who enrolled in Glen Echo’s Full Membership program this year. We asked about their satisfaction with the program and amenities at Glen Echo; their perception of the value of the program; their frequency of utilizing the program; and their desire to continue with the program next year. This incredibly valuable feedback is taken into account when we discuss the program’s future with Glen Echo. These discussions are currently in the works, and your feedback was so valuable to all. Speaking of brief surveys, you should see comment cards outside of the new yoga and barre studio at the West Clubhouse. After reviewing the results of the 2017 membership survey, the Club made a conscientious and

concerted effort to add a state-of-the-art yoga and barre studio to our list of amenities. While we offered yoga classes in racquetball courts at the time, the survey showed that many members were going elsewhere to take these classes in true studios. Now that we’ve invested in bringing the studio experience to the MAC, participation increased from 20 members to 180 in the first week! We are absolutely thrilled. As a reminder, classes are complimentary through the end of the year so if you haven’t tried a class already, do so. Obviously, this is an important initiative for the Club, and we want to ensure that it’s exceeding your expectations. We have the bandwidth to add more classes so if there is something else you would like to see, fill out a comment card and let us know. We’ve also hired some fantastic instructors, and they want to cater their classes to your preferences so let them know how they’re doing. Bottomline: Your feedback is appreciated. Another area that we’re looking closely at for the new year are our Clubs Within the Club. In conversations with the Membership Committee, we frequently discuss how the CWCs are crucial to membership retention and getting new members (and members in general) plugged into the Club. To help ensure that the CWCs remain a relevant engagement tool for the Club, we want to know if there are any new special interest groups that would appeal to you. Katie Maurer, who works closely with our CWCs, is researching popular

special interest groups at clubs throughout the country. Then, early this month, we are going to survey the membership to see if any of these would be of interest to you and ask for open-ended suggestions. If there is a new CWC or special interest group you would like to join at the MAC, let us know. The key is that we need strong leaders of these CWCs who are willing to put in the time, effort and energy to get new groups off the ground and running. CWCs like our Mark Twain Society lead by Carl Winters and our Wine Society co-chaired by Kurt Witzel and Nancy Suelflow thrive because of their strong leadership. We have many other great leaders of our CWCs, and we are looking for more. If this something that interests you, contact Katie. In return, I want to share staff feedback with all of you. In December, staff will receive their holiday gift checks from the Employee Holiday Fund, contributed to by members. Every year, the MAC staff are so appreciative of these gifts, and on behalf of all the staff, I want to say thank you, thank you, thank you for your generosity. These gift checks to our staff from you are impactful and so appreciated. Merry Christmas and happy New Year,

Wally Smith, General Manager Missouri Athletic Club

This year, MAC members voted to recognize St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Miles Mikolas as the 2018 Sports Personality of the Year. Mikolas signed with the Cardinals prior to the 2018 season with little fanfare after spending three seasons in Japan. The 30-year-old emerged as the team’s ace and earned a spot on the National League’s All-Star team. He tied for the league lead with 18 wins and finished fourth in the NL with an earned-run-average of 2.83. Mikolas will be among a distinguished group of honorees at the 49th annual Jack Buck Awards, presented by Maryville University on Dec. 3. Former Cardinals shortstop, Ozzie Smith, will receive the Stan “the Man” Award in recognition for his role in helping St. Louis land the PGA Championship. St. Louis native Jim Crane, owner of the 2017 World Series champion Houston Astros, will receive the Jack Buck Award. Head women’s soccer coach at Saint Louis University, Katie Shields, will receive the Carl O. Bauer Award. The voice of the Missouri Tigers, Mike Kelly, will receive the Burnes/Broeg Award. For those unable to attend, KMOX Radio will air the banquet that night. Fox Sports Midwest will televise a one-hour show to be aired multiple times throughout December. KMOX Sports Director Tom Ackerman will once again emcee the event. FROM LEFT: MILES MIKOLAS, OZZIE SMITH, JIM CRANE, KATIE SHIELDS, AND MIKE KELLY. FOR THE HOLIDAYS During this season of events, holiday parties, eating and drinking, navigate around risky food choices with these helpful tips. A good idea is to eat a snack before heading out to holiday parties. This helps fight the urge to overindulge. Skipping meals will not save calories as it will likely lead to overindulgence later. Nevertheless, make sure to set realistic diet plans! Do not be afraid to sample holiday favorites, just monitor portions.

COME MEET DOWNTOWN’S NEWEST MASSAGE THERAPISTS The Downtown Clubhouse recently welcomed two new massage therapists: Kelly McNally and Sara Kaemmerlen. Previously, Kelly only provided massage services at the West Clubhouse, but now she is extending her services downtown. With holiday stress around the corner, make an appointment with Sara, Kelly, or Jarrad.

All-New Downtown Weight Room Renovation on the Downtown Clubhouse weight room began in November. The new design will mirror the look and feel of the newly renovated functional training room on 5M and the group exercise space on the 11th floor. New equipment was ordered in mid-October and is set for delivery this month. The goal is to have the entire project complete for use prior to the new year. A temporary weight room is located at the racquetball courts on the fifth floor.

POWER YOGA HAPPY HOUR Come join Baptise yoga instructors, Susan Nelson and Beth Clauss to learn the benefits of power yoga! This overview will be followed by a full 60-minute power vinyasa yoga class. After the class, participants will have an opportunity to get to know the instructors, ask questions and enjoy refreshments! SILVER RACQUET TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIP FAMILY FUN TENNIS DAY $13,125 RAISED FOR CSC! The Silver Racquet Tennis Championship was the brainchild of Bob Barnes who, nine years ago, decided to bring together a large group of his tennis-playing friends to enjoy both their company and the spirit of friendly competition. The one-day, outdoor event brought players together for doubles where partners were swapped each round. The individual who won the most games was declared the winner and given a traveling trophy to take home for a year. Bob named the event out of respect for the silvering hair of its participants; those who are in their best years, full of wisdom, beyond the hopes of playing Wimbledon, but out there to win just the same. This year, in conjunction with the Silver Racquet Tennis Championship, Family Fun Tennis Day was introduced to participants in the afternoon hours. Both events aimed to raise money for the MAC’s Charitable Society for Children. For Family Fun Tennis, all members, of any age, were invited to join MAC tennis pros to try

out their tennis skills, play mini tennis, challenge the pros, get some tennis tips, and test their serving speed with a sport radar gun. At the end of the day, a Babolat Pure Drive tennis racquet was given away as an attendee raffle. Both the Silver Racquet Championship and Family Fun Tennis Day were a success as measured by the more than 60 participants’ enjoyment and the funds raised for such worthy charities. With the combination of Bob’s friendly perseverance, the MAC’s promotional efforts, and the generosity of many people, the events raised $13,125 in contributions to the CSC! Another highlight was that Keith Brueggeman won the Championship for the second consecutive year. Following the Championship, President Keith Phoenix presented a proclamation to Bob’s wife Debbie on his behalf because he was unable to attend the event. In the proclamation, President Phoenix recognized Bob for his involvement,

dedication and outstanding contribution to the CSC, the MAC and the St. Louis Community. Before President Phoenix presented the framed document, he read the decree. Its closing line was, “Now, therefore, I, G. Keith Phoenix, President of the Missouri Athletic Club, do hereby proclaim October 27, 2018, as: ROBERT BARNES DAY.” Also, in recognition of Bob, the tournament, going forward, will be named in his honor: Bob Barnes Silver Racquet Tennis Championship.

EDUC ATION:

A Community Commitment In addition to academics, children’s interests in athletics and other extracurricular activities are important factors to consider when choosing a school. Research is the best way to determine if a school and its programs are the best fit for the child. Here are a few things to consider when starting to research: SMALL CLASSES Small classes are at the top of the list. According to the National Council of Teachers of English, students in smaller classes with 12-15 students retain knowledge better and learn faster

than students in large lecture classes. Individualization is more prominent in smaller classes, and children tend to get more one-on-one time with the teacher. In the St. Louis area, many private schools have a reputation for smaller class sizes. PROXIMITY Throughout the St. Louis metropolitan area, schools are scattered throughout the city, county, and suburbs. While it may not be the biggest factor in determining the perfect fit, distance can play a large role in the school experience. From drop off at sports practice to studying at a friend’s house, consider the commute. Will it be more of a hassle than it is worth? If yes, seek out a better fit closer to home so everyone will benefit in the long run. continued »

>> education highlight A SENSE OF COMMUNITY Whether celebrating an accomplishment or grieving through tragedy, community within the school should support its students. Administrators and faculty usually make community a top priority for a few reasons. Primarily, it is a life lesson that they want to teach. Most schools try to produce students who have a sense of awareness of the world around them. Even more importantly they are taught to respect the rights and opinions of others. GREAT TEACHER-STUDENT RELATIONSHIPS A healthy connection between child and teacher is key for a successful learning experience in the classroom. This creates an engaging environment for connecting with the child. Begin a conversation with the teacher; he or she should be able to speak about individual students’ backgrounds, strengths, interests, weaknesses and academic milestones. ABUNDANCE OF EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES Extracurriculars, as they are often called, are part of the balanced approach to learning and maturation, which most schools feel is a critical part of the mission. In some cases, teachers are required to advise or direct an extracurricular activity as part of their duties. Schools also take pride in their sports teams and go the extra mile to ensure students get the most out of their experience. Ask for the school’s organization list to find the school that checks all the boxes. When choosing the correct school, researching does not always answer 24 F Cherry Diamond F DEC 2018

day-to-day work that students complete on a weekly basis. With different levels and tracks, schools offer personalized learning plans to help children learn to the best of their abilities.

IS THE SCHOOL A GOOD FIT? While it is tempting to gain admission to the most competitive school possible, be sure that school is a good fit for the child and that it won’t be too challenging—or too simple—down the road. If a child is drawn to the arts, a science school won’t help them foster their potential. Making sure the student is in an environment in which they will thrive is the most important. WHERE DO THE GRADUATES ATTEND COLLEGE? Schools normally publish a list of where their graduates attend college. While these lists usually cover many years, they will provide an idea of what kinds of colleges the school has associations with and high possibilities of where prospective students will likely attend. WHAT IS THE WORK LIKE? Many schools in St. Louis have set expectations on what pace they want their students to learn. Research school’s minimum test grades and learn about the

Come see it! The display is sure to ignite the Christmas spirit in both children and adults.
