from the president The MAC is open! Both Clubhouses are open. After eight weeks of closure, most of our Club’s operations are up and running. It is gratifying to see our Members enjoying meals and beverages in 1903 and on the 4th Floor, getting haircuts, working out, and enjoying the pools. We are hosting events and weddings. Club spirit is strong. We recognize Club leadership and our great employees for their efforts and sacrifices during the closures and reopening. We recognize our Members for your loyalty during the closures. Less than 3 percent of our Members resigned from the Club during the time we were closed, and that includes normal attrition. We are truly inspired that our Members appreciate the long-term value the Club offers. Your unwavering support demonstrates the uniqueness of our organization. We acknowledge all of our Members, employees and guests for your patience and agility as we navigate the ongoing COVID-19 journey together. I am pleased to report that, despite the closures and the gradual reopening, the Club’s financial position is solid. The combination of a resilient membership, bold cash preservation, debt restructuring and a measured approach to staffing during reopening, allowed us to maintain neutral cash flow in the months of April and May. With continued support, we expect to complete our fiscal year on a

positive note based on our momentum prior to the closures. The Downtown Clubhouse sparkles as the Trulaske Project, made possible by the MAC Preservation Foundation, continues. You will notice the brilliance of the limestone as you drive downtown. The exterior of the Clubhouse reflects the brightness of the atmosphere inside the building as we resume many of the traditions that make the Club experience unique to every Member. The Club is open for life. Whether your family is a second or third-generation Member or a family’s inaugural Member, the MAC offers a rich experience wherever you find yourself in the cycle of life. From youth programs to the Forever Young Club and all of our Clubs Within the Club, there are social, athletic, and dining opportunities at a premier level that you will not find elsewhere. The MAC is a Platinum Club of America and the club of choice in St. Louis. The Club is open to people of color. The recent pain and anger expressed throughout the country represent a call to action for all Americans and us at the Missouri Athletic Club. Our hearts go out to all MAC Members and employees or their loved ones who have experienced violence, racism, prejudice or inequality. We want all of our employees, Members, guests and the entire community to know that racism, prejudice and inequality are not tolerated at the MAC. It is wrong and

violates long standing MAC policies and practices. We commit, as a leading organization, to engage in meaningful conversation, listen intently and hear our employees and Members who have been impacted by racism, prejudice and inequality, and work intentionally to accelerate enduring change within the MAC and the community in which we serve. An MAC community that is open to a diverse range of opinions and perspectives makes us a stronger organization. Your input is valued. To our Members and employees, if you have questions, concerns or suggestions, or want to share a point of view, please contact me. I welcome the opportunity to have a conversation and try to provide a small bit of peace. I intend to hold listening forums and implement recommendations to make a positive difference both at the MAC and in our community. I will provide updates and highlight action steps as we progress. The MAC is open. Please enjoy your Club and the family, fellowship, Membercentric and tradition that it offers each of us.

Dan Lett, President Missouri Athletic Club

We are truly inspired that our Members appreciate the long-term value the Club offers. Your unwavering support demonstrates the uniqueness of our organization.

from the general manager Crazy times! But there is a glimpse of the “new normal” starting to take shape here at the MAC. Slowly but surely, we are getting our Members and employees back where they belong. A big shout out to all of our staff who have worked so hard in getting us opened back up. What a task and one I hope to never repeat! In the past few weeks, we’ve been able to witness the MAC spirit in full swing with the return of our fitness departments at both Clubhouses and our West Clubhouse pool on June 15. It’s been great to see everyone enjoying our facilities and spending time with each other after a long time apart. Local restrictions are gradually lifting, so we are looking forward to increasing capacities to 50 percent across departments as of June 29, then to 75 percent and back up to 100 percent, as

permitted by St. Louis City and County. Keep an eye on your emails, the website and social media for the most up-to-date information on department reopenings, guidelines, reservations and more. Our Downtown Clubhouse fitness areas no longer need reservations, and squash and racquetball are back in play at the West Clubhouse with “trusted friend” protocols. In other great news, we had 11 new Members join the Club in June! That’s so encouraging! Let your friends and neighbors know we are alive, and we are the MAC. On a very serious note, we do take the health and safety of our Members and employees extremely seriously. Please continue to adhere to health and safety guidelines outlined in each department. We appreciate

you wearing your masks, practicing social distancing, washing your hands and please, please staying home if you feel sick. Stay healthy! We all thank you for your patience, understanding and commitment to the MAC as we work together to pave this road forward. The MAC spirit is strong, and we are grateful to our Members and employees who make this place so special. See you at the Club!

Leaving a Legacy

AFTER

Do You Have a Will? An Estate Plan? Amazingly, more than 50 percent of adults in the United States do not have a will or an estate plan, and many wills and estate plans have not been updated in many years. Writing wills and estate plans and updating them takes time and can be expensive, but one easy and inexpensive way to ensure that your heirs and favorite charities receive assets at the time of your death is through beneficiary designations. Beneficiary designations are easy to make and easy to change. In order to leave a lasting legacy here at your Club, please consider designating the MAC or one of its three foundations (Preservation, Sports and Arts) as a beneficiary on one of your retirement accounts (IRAs, 401ks, 403bs, etc.) or a life insurance policy.

MAC's Back in Action MAC Members Return to the Club’s New Normal

The Club is back! After nearly two months of shutting the doors, the MAC is excited to have its Members back in the Clubhouse as it slowly returns to a state of normalcy. Under the City and County guidelines, the Club has been able to reopen most of our departments with restrictions to keep everyone safe and healthy. The first phase of the reopening began on May 18 with restaurant dining, haircare, the West Clubhouse Pro Shop and hotel rooms. Haircuts seemed to be especially appreciated as Members filed in one-by-one to improve their quarantine styles. One Member, Thomas Riffey, even pranked the barbershop stylists by sporting a long, blonde wig to his appointment. The next phase saw the reopening of the Downtown lap pool and dry cleaning on June 1. The following announcement stated that massage services, special events, meetings and weddings could resume beginning June 8. Our first wedding took place soon after the opening on Saturday, June 13. Almost since the Club announced its reopening, Members asked when they would be able to use the fitness centers and West Clubhouse pool once again. June 15 finally brought those re-openings along with tennis, pickleball and childcare. Reservations came flooding in for all areas, especially the pool. The weather proved perfect for the pool’s opening day. As soon as the pool opened, kids raced to be the first to jump in the water. The rest of their families were not far behind, thankful for a place to relax outside of the house. Finally, squash, racquetball and the West Clubhouse gymnasium reopened for activities on Monday, June 22 to an impressive amount of reservations. While all of our phased reopenings were taking place, the exterior renovations on the Downtown Clubhouse have been progressing as part of the Building on Tradition Campaign to restore the Downtown Clubhouse. This project was made possible through a grant from the Robert J. Trulaske Jr. Family Foundation and generous donations from our Members to the Building on Tradition Fund and at the Preservation Foundation Ball, which took place earlier this year on Feb. 15. Thank you to the many generous Members who were integral in making this project a possibility. These renovations on the exterior of the building are taking place on both the eastern and southern-facing elevations. This project includes tuckpointing, power washing, wood windows, metal rails, window lintel and sills, terra cotta, granite and limestone. Other work includes masonry cleaning and brick water repellent. If Members have not had the chance to make it back to the MAC, the Club hopes to see you soon! 8 F Cherry Diamond F JULY 2020
