from the president I am honored to represent the Missouri Athletic Club as the 105th President. The MAC is family to me, my wife Polly, our daughters Julia and Sarah and my step-son George. I thank my predecessor, Kevin Cantwell, for his leadership this past year, particularly as we entered the COVID-19 crisis, and for preparing me for this role. I also extend appreciation to the outgoing officers: Tracy Beckette, Mark Brandom, John Pennington and Tim Malyszko. The 2020/21 Board of Governors is a strong group of dedicated leaders who embrace the challenge to bring our Club back online. The senior class (Gene Frederic, Cheri McLaughlin, Jeff Moore, Nat Walsh, and myself) as well as the junior class (Julie Ahrling, Matt Gross, Angie Minges, Duke Niedringhaus, and Aaron Pawlitz) welcome the freshman class: Steve Albart, Tracy Beckette, Brent Beumer, Justin Fowler and Chris Swank. This team is passionate about the MAC. Our current focus is on three things: our people, our members and our future. Recently, our people sacrificed. Many employees faced furlough as the world stopped to fight an invisible enemy. Others worked harder for less to keep the heart of the Club beating. We owe General Manager Wally Smith and the entire staff gratitude for their tireless efforts. Our members stepped up and offered support for our people, donating nearly $130,000 to an employee relief fund. Our members also sacrificed. While we reduced dues and fees, our members continue to invest in a Club they cannot fully enjoy, knowing that the future of their Club is at stake. We are encouraged by the continued Club spirit among our members and their ongoing engagement with the Club despite the clubhouse closures. We thank our members for their patience as we reopen the Club under temporary rules and requirements and their understanding that the health and safety of our people and our members is first priority. Our goal is for the Club to thrive as it was just a few long months ago. Behind the scenes, our Board built a strong set of committees for the upcoming year. The

governance orientation sessions held last year allowed us to build a strong farm team of members eager to serve the Club. This farm system now has many qualified members on the bench ready to serve in future years. We will invite these members to attend committee meetings as guests to expose them to our committee work so they are better prepared to serve when called upon. Prior to the COVID crisis, the Board engaged in a strategic planning initiative. We confirmed that our current mission statement continues to describe accurately who we are as an institution and what we aspire to be: “The premier athletic, dining and social club for business, professional and civic leaders and their families in the St. Louis region.” We simplified our vision statement, which now reads: “To be the Club of Choice in the St. Louis Region.” Based on these guiding principles, we outlined a plan based on five key strategic pillars to guide our work: relevance and sustainability, membership experience, internal organizational structure, civic/leadership engagement and financial stewardship. We also reflected on the key values of the MAC: family, fellowship, membercentric and tradition. COVID-19 disrupted our strategic planning and caused us to change course quickly. We made immediate, tough decisions to protect our Club’s future. I initiated a Plan Ahead Team charged with preparing for multiple scenarios as we navigate the pandemic and pursuing an operational Club as and when circumstances permit. This planning will help us exit survival mode, advance to stability mode and ultimately return our Club to thriving mode and a reimagining of our Club for the future. A little more than 100 years ago, the MAC emerged from a fire that destroyed the Downtown Clubhouse, and then the Spanish Flu caused the Club to cancel events and members to socially distance and wear face coverings. Sound familiar? I am inspired by William C. Connett, the President in 1920/1921. Connett was instrumental in marshaling the resources to rebuild the Club after the fire and fulfilling the dream of

renewing and reimagining the Club. Connett led the Club, then known as the Missouri Athletic Association, after an event that tested the Club’s resilience, and the Club kept the dream alive. Many members and companies stepped up, donating their time and money to ensure that the Club survived. Now it is our turn to keep the dream alive. I am proud that our current membership, who held together despite the recent challenges, again shows the resilience, strength and resolve of the MAC. Our members are helping each other and helping our employees through this challenging time. Just like one century ago, the MAC is not just about the buildings, it is about a group of people with an unbreakable bond. That is why we will persevere and why we are the club of choice in the St. Louis region. In 2002, the MAC published a chronicle called 100 Years of Excellence. The final words in the book are telling: “The MAC will certainly face times of challenge as well as times of celebration in the years to come, but its rich history provides a powerful foundation on which to build. The Club’s strong heritage, coupled with the commitment of both membership and staff to the MAC’s mission of excellence, assures that the MAC will continue to be a respected and admired St. Louis institution for many years to come.” Together, we will emerge from the current crisis, stronger and more resolved to continue the MAC tradition. Our Board is committed, our people are committed and our members are committed. We properly positioned the Club and will successfully return the Club to its glory to continue long into the future. Thank you, and I look forward to seeing you at the Club. In the meantime, please contact me with any thoughts, questions, concerns or ideas. This is your Club, and the Board is here to serve you and keep the MAC dream alive.

Thank You! From MAC Employees Dear MAC members, On May 18, our doors reopened for the first time in a couple of months. Under the masks of our members and employees, we could see a lot of smiling faces! The MAC community is thrilled to be back at the Club, and our barber shops were non-stop and the hits of the day. Imagine that. In March, when we made the decision to temporarily close our doors. We were also forced to make the hardest decision of furloughing 370 employees. But the MAC quickly established an employee relief fund led by Governor Angie Minges and our Board of Governors. The outpouring of support was unbelievable with 475 members participating to raising nearly $130,000 in just a few weeks. Amazing! I have received numerous comments and notes from our employees who wanted me to relay to you a huge THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU! Your generosity helped our fellow team members and their families through this unbelievably challenging time. The relief fund effort was another shining example of the MAC spirit and why we are so MAC STRONG! Thank you all so much.

Leaving a Legacy

AFTER

Do You Have a Will? An Estate Plan? Amazingly, more than 50 percent of adults in the United States do not have a will or an estate plan, and many wills and estate plans have not been updated in many years. Writing wills and estate plans and updating them takes time and can be expensive, but one easy and inexpensive way to ensure that your heirs and favorite charities receive assets at the time of your death is through beneficiary designations. Beneficiary designations are easy to make and easy to change. In order to leave a lasting legacy here at your Club, please consider designating the MAC or one of its three foundations (Preservation, Sports and Arts) as a beneficiary on one of your retirement accounts (IRAs, 401ks, 403bs, etc.) or a life insurance policy.

Membership Department

Updates

The Membership Department is open and primarily fielding questions from current members at this time. However, requests for tours and new member information are beginning to pick up. The staff is providing prospective members with tours around both clubhouses on a limited basis. In keeping with our current guidelines and restrictions, prospective members will not be allowed to utilize any Club services as guests. The Club welcomed more than 30 new members who have joined since the shutdown first happened. The Membership Department is currently going through orientation procedures with these members and, hopefully, we will all be seeing them around the clubhouses. If you know someone who is interested in membership, now is a great time for them to learn more. The Club will certainly need new members as we return to regular operations and as always, we rely on our members to refer good new members. Please direct all inquiries about potential new members, as well as current membership questions, to the Director of Membership, Rodney Stoyer, as the department is still operating with a partial staff. ELECTRONIC ELECTION For the first time in the Club’s history, the 2020 Board of Governors Election was completely remote. During the week of May 4, members cast their votes for their favorite candidates online or from a mail-in ballot to elect the Board of Governors Class of 2023. The votes were tallied on May 7. Shortly after 7 p.m. that day President Cantwell, surrounded by the rest of his fellow Board members, filmed a video announcing the election winners — Steven Albart, Tracy Beckette, Brent Beumer, Justin Fowler and Chris Swank. Thank you to all of the members who participated in this historic election and helped keep this MAC tradition alive! Congratulations to the new class of Governors.

Women's

W ELLNESS W EEK HIGHLIGHTS OFFERINGS FOR FEMALE MEMBERS

The week of May 11-15 was devoted to celebrating the women of the MAC, sponsored by the Women’s Initiative Group. The third annual event looked a bit different this year as it was held virtually for members to fill out on their own schedules, helping them to remain engaged in the Club while the doors were closed. To help make this week a possibility, fitness instructors Paul Helfrich, Courtney Hutt and Joy Holdmeier created online content for these members to complete including yoga, cardio, circuit training and more! West Clubhouse catering manager Emma Pranger helped participants cook up some delicious,

healthy meals with recipes for breakfast through dinner. She also debuted a special fresh-pressed juice named Wonder Woman Juice for the week. Additionally, Curbside To Go offered a special healthy wok on that Monday. Finally, the Pro Shop put on a sale for the event, which included 20% off of any item in the shop. Throughout the week, members documented their participation in daily events with bingo cards. For each activity, members were asked to submit a photo as proof. Those who marked off five activities in a row or of the same color and submitted them got bingo. They received a coupon for a

complimentary fresh-pressed juice and were entered to win the grand prize of a head-totoe fitness outfit. The grand prize winner was Stacie Wines Brasseur, who got the healthy wok from Curbside To Go, read a book, participated in mother-daughter yoga, went for a run and watched a West Clubhouse Phase Two video to win. Other members who won bingo include Meg Clarke, Libby Garner, Elisabeth Gale Lewis, Gov. Cheri McLaughlin, Jennifer Pawlitz and Ashley Wunderlich. The next event is scheduled to take place in January 2021.

out the menu by navigating to Dining > Specials and clicking on the article “Order MAC Meals To Go!” Since it first began being offered, Curbside To Go has been a hit, even selling out of the pre-set meal options on several occasions due to popularity. Here is what some of our members have had to say about their experience: “Everyone has worked so hard through all of this, and I miss everyone, but cannot tell you what an exceptional job that everyone has done with Curbside To Go. It has been just amazing.” “It was wonderful! Our food was ready right on time, hot and delicious! It was great seeing everyone and having an opportunity to say hello. I miss everyone so much and can’t wait to return as soon as the Club reopens.”

FITNES S FROM AFAR Don’t Fret 2 Sweat

Although the MAC’s fitness centers are closed, the MAC’s fitness community is alive and well. MAC West Clubhouse Assistant Athletic Director Paul Helfrich and Fitness & Wellness Manager Courtney Hutt have have created daily workout programs and videos that members can do from home, wellness and nutrition tips, healthy recipes, ways for families to stay active and self-awareness and mental health tips. Although the group existed long before the quarantine began, it has grown to have more than 410 members now, and even includes more

videos from a new coach, Programs Manager and Fitness Instructor Joy Holdmeier. This group has even encouraged people to post videos and photos of themselves, helping the MAC members gain a sense of community while they’re away from the gym. “Don’t Fret 2 Sweat has brought MAC members together in a different sense during these unprecedented times,” said Hutt.  “Even though we are all eager to be back at the Club, it’s been great to see the support and

camaraderie through our page. I’ve enjoyed creating workouts you can do in the home as well as providing wellness and nutrition tips while we all try to navigate through these tough times.” In addition to the Facebook group, the MAC now has a fitness page on the website that allows members who are not on social media to gain access to all of the wonderful workouts the MAC fitness team has put together. Access this page by going to the website navigating to Fitness & Wellness > Blogs and clicking the article “Don’t Fret 2 Sweat.”

Building

ON TRADITION While the doors to the Club were closed, the exterior renovations on the Downtown Clubhouse have been progressing as part of the Building on Tradition Campaign to clean up the Downtown Clubhouse. This project was made possible through a grant from the Robert J. Trulaske Jr. Family Foundation and generous donations from our members to the Building on Tradition Fund and at the Preservation Foundation Ball, which took place earlier this year on Feb. 15. Thank you to the many generous members who were integral in making this project a possibility. These renovations on the exterior of the building are taking place on both the eastern and southern-facing elevations. This project includes tuckpointing, power washing, wood windows, metal rails, window lintel and sills, terra cotta, granite and limestone. Other work includes masonry cleaning and brick water repellent.
