from the president It was not only a fun evening at the Foundations’ Gala, it was also a successful fundraiser for our three foundations.

There are also several other exciting Club events in the next two months. Before I talk about those, I want to thank everyone who supported the MAC’s foundations by attending the Gala, becoming a sponsor, donating an auction item, or bidding on silent auction items remotely online. Your participation helped make this event a great success, supported the future of the MAC, and built upon our Club’s great culture of camaraderie. Although the final numbers are not in, we collected in excess of $87,000, a new record. Approximately, $63,500 is attributed to the live auction; $16,000 is from the silent auction; $7,400 raffles; and another $40,725 from sponsors, advertisers, and donors. These are all preliminary numbers, but I’m happy to report that the Gala was a success. A special thanks also goes to Gala Chairman Kevin Cantwell, Katie Mauer and their Gala Committee along with the MAC staff who spent hours making sure the Gala was enjoyed by all.

Keep the momentum going by planning to attend the annual Masters at the MAC/ Golf Season Kickoff event on April 24. There will be commentary by Jay Randolph, Sr. and Jay Randolph, Jr. Ozzie Smith will be present to accept a check from the MAC Sports Foundation on behalf of his foundation, PGA Reach. At the event, you will hear more about the MAC’s Full Membership Program at Glen Echo Country Club. The MAC has a renewed

partnership with Glen Echo and has locked in a fixed rate of $295 per month plus tax for the next two years and an agreement that the program will continue into the future. In summary, MAC members have the unique opportunity to enjoy full membership benefits at two legendary clubs and three clubhouses.

Members are encouraged to contact Rodney Stoyer in the MAC Membership Department to enroll in the program now in preparation for golf season in April.

On April 12, the MAC will celebrate local female leaders who have been revolutionary in business, civic engagement, philanthropic programs, or mentorship at the annual Women of Distinction luncheon. New this year, instead of a featured keynote speaker, a moderator will interview panel of very interesting women from a variety of backgrounds, which means there should be great takeaways for everyone attending.

On April 15, the MAC will host the College Basketball Awards for the second consecutive year. At this event, the MAC will honor the player of the year (Oscar Robertson Award), coach of the year (Henry Iba Award), and freshman of the year (Wayman Tisdale Award).

New this year, the MAC will also present the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award to the top woman college basketball player. Reservations for this event open to MAC members only on March 1.

March 1 is also the deadline to submit letters of intent to run for the Board of Governors. As a follow-up to my January column, the Board of Governors held a special meeting in January to discuss the election process. In summary, while several Governors were in favor of moving to a non-contested election, there were varying thoughts, and the Board did not reach a consensus on revising the election process. As a result, the topic will not be brought to the membership for a vote, and the Club will continue with a contested election.

The Nominating Committee is looking for qualified candidates. Members are encouraged to reach out to the Nominating Committee or Board of Governors, if they have an interest in running or if they want to recommend someone who they think would be a good candidate.

During the meeting, there was a consensus on continuing with one vote per member household and electronic voting. Additionally, the Board is going to draft amendments to the bylaws to allow spouses to serve on committees and the Board of Governors. All members should plan to attend the election festivities, which are a great MAC tradition.

from the general manager First and foremost, thank you to everyone who sponsored the Foundations’ Gala, donated an auction item, bid on auction items, and attended the event. It lived up to its reputation as “the party of the year,” but more importantly, it raised approximately $87,000 for the MAC’s foundations, which exceeded our goal of $75,000 and is a new record. I applaud everyone who contributed to the event’s success. These funds make a significant impact on Club and the St. Louis community. For example, gifts to the Preservation Foundation allow us to make improvements to our Downtown Clubhouse while simultaneously freeing up other dollars in our capital budget for improvements at the West Clubhouse. I’m still on cloud nine from the whole experience, which is why I changed my column photo to further commemorate this spectacular event.

I’m also still energized about a Business Management Institute continuing education course that West Clubhouse Manager Darrin Harnetiaux and I attended in Phoenix in early January. The course focused on trending athletic and fitness programs ranging from youth programming to racquet sports to everything encompassing wellness. One of the highlights was the day we spent touring the Exos facility headquarters and taking courses provided by their professionals. To summarize, Exos is a company focused on human performance. They offer state-of-theart fitness facilities, expert professionals, and the latest technology all focused on intertwining fitness training, nutrition, and physical and mental well-being. Frankly, they’re three to five years ahead of the industry standard, and I left thoroughly

impressed with their approach and offerings.

To paint a better picture, here are just of the few of the forward-thinking fitness and wellness industry trends: F Employment of medical professionals to assess a person’s health and prescribe a treatment plan that incorporates diet, exercise, lifestyle recommendations, and medications.

F Provide boutique, custom and personalized experiences by creating unique opportunities for relaxation, such as floatation therapy studio or aroma therapy preferences, or conversely adrenaline pumping, such as hikes, clean cocktails, and live music.

F Offer holistic therapies and CBD oilinfusion with spa packages and nutrition offerings.

F Increased focus on “spirit” and mental health with meditation, yoga, massage and other stress-reducing therapies.

Not surprisingly, Darrin and I came back to the MAC exploding with ideas to share with the team and implement at the Club.

Most recently, we met with David Vandeven and Katie Lambert, our registered dieticians at both clubhouses, along with our chefs and fitness staff to discuss providing more healthy dining alternatives, such as real fruit smoothies and a juice bar. We’re looking forward to sharing more details as these ideas become reality.

While on the topic of fitness and wellness, I am happy to report that we have received a wealth of positive member feedback since completing Phase One of the West Clubhouse fitness expansion and renovation project and the Downtown Clubhouse weight room

renovation early this year. Phase Two of the West Clubhouse project is slated to begin in September. We’re currently finalizing the design and subsequent costs. I hope to have renderings of Phase Two in May or June to share and reignite the excitement for this ongoing project.

Keep in mind, these projects have been in the works for several years. They’re coming to fruition as a result of the vision and leadership provided by your Board of Governors and committees working closely with staff. Not only did your leaders have a vision, but they also developed a plan for staying on track and executing it, which is extremely commendable.

On this note, the Board will elect a new president and officers before this printed publication reaches your hands. I want to personally thank the outgoing Board for their exceptional leadership. By keeping a steady hand on the rudder, they’ve kept our ship steered in the right direction. As a result, the past two years have been the best in the Club’s financial history. A big thanks goes out to David Smith, Treasurer; Andrew Carter, Secretary; Matt Morris, Second Vice President; Aaron Pawlitz, First Vice President; and of course, Keith Phoenix, President. On behalf of the entire MAC management and staff, thank you for your leadership and contributions to the Club.

RAMONA BEHSHAD MAC member since 2017

CD: What made you want to join the MAC? RB: Neither my husband nor I have immediate family in St. Louis so we were looking to join a club. One of my patients, who is now a dear friend, suggested that my husband and I tour the MAC. It has been great for my family. We like to be active and socialize.

CD: Describe your profession.

RB: I am an Assistant Professor of Dermatology and the Division Director of Mohs Surgery and Cutaneous Oncology at Saint Louis University School of Medicine.

Most of my time is spent practicing dermatology within SLUCare Physician Group, and my focus is on the treatment of skin cancer.

CD: Are you involved with any leadership boards or other organizations in the community?

RB: One of my biggest accomplishments as a physician is becoming President of the Saint Louis Metropolitan Medical Society.

I am only the third female president in the 180-year history of the Society, and the first woman to serve in that capacity in more than 20 years. I am also Secretary of the Saint Louis Dermatological Society, President of the Saint Louis Dermatology Journal Club, and a member of the Faculty Senate at Saint Louis University.

CD: Has membership at the MAC influenced your leadership in the community or helped you grow your business, leadership skills, network or achieve professional success?

RB: I really enjoy networking with MAC members who are both in healthcare and outside of healthcare. We meet for an early morning workout or to share a meal. My husband and I have invited co-workers to 8 F Cherry Diamond F MAR 2019

attend Easter, Christmas, and Mother’s Day Brunch. We are confident in and thankful for the staff at the Club, who provide excellent food and treat you as if you’re family.

CD: Have you or do you plan to use the Club to host business meetings or networking events?

RB: Great people, great place to have fun, exercise, and rejuvenate. We held the Saint Louis Metropolitan Medical Society Installation dinner at the Downtown Clubhouse in January, and it was a beautiful event. The ballroom was beautiful, the food was excellent, and the service was outstanding as usual.

LAURA BRUNING MAC member since 2010 CD: What made you want to join the MAC? LB: My mother and father-in-law have been members for years so before I joined, I would go to the MAC with them as a guest. In 2008, my husband and I had our wedding reception in the beautiful Missouri Room. So, it was never a question of if I would join, just when.

CD: Describe your profession.

LB: As Associate General Counsel for Energizer, I handle all labor, employment, and compliance legal issues for the company, which includes employment litigation and counseling, union negotiations, migration, safety and health compliance, training, policy review, etc. And since Energizer has employees in more than 40 countries, my scope is global. On a typical day I could be, for example, helping an employee in Australia get a work visa, counseling HR about leave laws in Russia, or working with local counsel on litigation strategy in Argentina.

CD: Are you involved with any leadership boards or other organizations in the St. Louis community?

LB: I recently finished a six-year term on the Missouri Division of Youth Services Advisory Board. I am also the president and founder of the Pulmonary Fibrosis Society.

CD: Has membership at the MAC helped you achieve professional success?

LB: Absolutely. My husband and I both love our jobs and work a lot, but we are also very family oriented and spend as much time as we can with our two little girls. The MAC allows us to conveniently have a healthier lifestyle. My husband and I use the gym and attend the fitness classes, while the girls hang out in the playroom together or take tennis lessons. Then, we all grab a bite together in the grille.

CD: What do you enjoy most about membership at the MAC? LB: For me, the best thing about the MAC is the pool. You can find us there every single Saturday in the summer. The kids have a blast; Brenda always brings us a cold drink; the poolside café has great snacks (the black bean hummus is the best in town), and I get the opportunity to chat with old friends and meet new ones.

CD: Why should other young professionals join the MAC? LB: The networking. There are always fun events to attend, and it’s nice to meet people who also have a “work hard play hard” mentality.

CD: What are you currently reading, or are there any books or resources that you would recommend to other professionals or community leaders?

LB: Instead, I’d like to actually recommend a podcast. My husband AJ introduced me to Tim Ferris’s podcast. The podcast interviews the world’s most successful people, and he extracts from them tips and tools you can use to be better and more efficient in life.

It’s a great way to pass the time, learn, and get inspired.

TOM DANKENBRING MAC member since 2002 CD: What made you want to join the MAC? TD: Initially, I wanted to get involved in working out at the MAC and the men’s basketball league. I played basketball throughout my entire life, and I had some friends who were already playing in MAC leagues. I was also blessed to see the incredible relationships my dad, Jim Dankenbring, built through the MAC since he joined in 1978, and I wanted to meet new people in the same way.

CD: Please describe your profession.

TD: Since college, I have owned a full financial planning practice, affiliated with Northwestern Mutual. My team and I help individuals, families, and businesses with numerous aspects of their financial planning needs, including insurance, investments, and corporate benefits.

CD: Are you involved with any leadership boards or other organizations in the community? If so, please describe.

TD: I’ve been involved with a lot of committees here at the MAC through the years, including, most recently, the Membership and Nominating committees, and am a past President of the Associate’s Group. I am currently active on the Operating Board for Lutheran Family and Children’s Services as well as Lutheran Association for Special Education. MAC Past President, Dean Eggerding and I have co-chaired LASE’s golf tournament for several years.

CD: Has membership at the MAC influenced your leadership in the community or helped you grow your business, leadership skills, network or achieve professional success?

TD: Absolutely. Inevitably, being active at the MAC allows people to surround themselves with the best of the best in St. Louis. I can’t think of a better network than the relationships I’ve built through the MAC. The best part is these relationships all started as friendships and have naturally progressed into professional relationships too.

CD: Have you used the Club to host business meetings or networking events?

TD: I have countless breakfast, lunch, and ‘fellowship’ meetings at both clubhouses with clients. There’s no better place to bring a client than the MAC because I am always certain they will have an incredible

experience. The atmosphere, the food and drinks and, most importantly, the staff are all second to none. I can’t say enough about the staff – they are like a second family to my family and me.

CD: What are you currently reading, or are there any books or resources that you would recommend to other professionals or community leaders?

TD: I am re-reading Doing Business by the Good Book, written by Dave Steward. It’s fantastic and faith-based.

KATIE HAYWOOD MAC member since 2015 CD: Please describe your profession.

KH: I am an Industrial Real Estate Broker at CBRE. I focus on both sales and leasing of industrial buildings.

CD: Are you involved with any leadership boards or other organizations in the community?

KH: I volunteer at my kids’ school, Mary Queen of Peace, whenever I can. I also try to volunteer my time with different charitable committees.

CD: Has membership at the MAC influenced your leadership in the community or helped you grow your business, leadership skills, network or achieve professional success?

KH: Yes. I do business with many MAC members. Being able to see them in a non-work setting helps build stronger relationships.

CD: What do you enjoy most about membership at the MAC? KH: We enjoy all of the diverse amenities the MAC has to offer from Breakfast with Santa, to Easter, to fitness classes, tennis, and activities for the kids. There is always something to do at the MAC. CD: Why should other young professionals join the MAC? KH: The MAC provides a platform to build new friendships, expand business relationships, and strengthen your existing network all while doing activities you enjoy.

CD: Are there any books or resources that you would recommend to other professionals or community leaders?

KH: I highly recommend Value-Added Selling, which is authored by a MAC member and friend, Paul Reilly.

MATT MASIEL MAC member since 2007 CD: What made you want to join the MAC? MM: My in-laws have been members since the MAC acquired the Town & Country Racquet Club. I joined as an Associate, but resigned in my early thirties to commit more time to my growing family.

Then, about four years ago, I learned about the Platinum Partnership Program and decided then was a good time to re-join.

CD: Please describe your profession.

MM: As President at Prime Building & Construction and Screaming Eagle Development, I focus on adaptive reuse of historic properties into predominately multifamily buildings. I also own a general contracting company that focuses on commercial flat roofing.

CD: Are you involved with any leadership boards or other organizations?

MM: I am on the Operating Board of Lutheran Family and Children’s Services, and my wife and I are the chairs of this year’s annual auction. I am the President of the Vanderbilt Alumni in St. Louis Association.

CD: Have you used the Club to host business meetings or networking events?

MM: I have hosted several Vanderbilt Alumni Association events at the West Clubhouse.

Working with the Club’s catering team is always easy, and they help put together some great events.

CD: What do you enjoy most about membership at the MAC? MM: My family enjoys Friday nights at the Club. We make reservations in the Stan Musial Grille with our friends while our daughters enjoy the MACtivities. I also appreciate how the MAC supports veterans.

I named my business in honor of my time in the U.S. Army as Engineer Officer in the 101st Airborne Division, known as Screaming Eagles.

CD: Why should other young professionals join the MAC? MM: The MAC is a great place to meet people, especially for young professionals with kids. It allows you to connect with others and still spend time with family.

The featured panelists will include Carolyn Kindle Betz, President of the Enterprise Holdings Foundation, the charitable arm of Enterprise Holdings Inc. Since its inception, the Foundation has contributed more than $354 million to thousands of registered nonprofit efforts, focused on community improvement, education and environmental stewardship.

In her role, Kindle Betz develops and implements the Foundation’s long-term philanthropic strategies and objectives for the future. She is also leading St. Louis’ bid to try to land a Major League Soccer franchise.

Adrian E. Bracy, MBA, CPA, began as the chief executive officer for YWCA Metro St. Louis on Aug. 17, 2009.

Bracy has more than 20 years of senior management finance experience with professional sports teams that include the St. Louis Rams, Arizona Cardinals and the Miami Dolphins/Joe Robbie Stadium. Her strong background in financial management is complimented by her talents for overseeing long-term business objectives, human resources, risk management and building strong relationships with local communities. Bracy says her calling is “to inspire and make a difference in the lives of women and girls.”

Romaine Seguin is president of UPS Global Freight Forwarding. She oversees air, ocean, and rail freight forwarding as well as brokerage and supplier management for the 220 countries and territories UPS serves around the world. Throughout her career, Seguin has held a variety of operational and management roles. Seguin has volunteered on several boards, including the Florida International University (FIU) School of

Business Dean’s Council, the board of Trustees of William Woods University, and the United Way. Cheri McLaughlin is President and owner of Sparks Milling Digital.

She directs business development, client relationships, HR legal, and financial operations. McLaughlin works with client teams to develop digital marketing strategies by assessing, analyzing and designing solutions. She currently serves on the MAC’s Board of Governors and previously served on numerous committees including Nominating, Planning, Planned Giving, Finance, By-Laws, Membership and Women’s Initiative.

On the heels of that strong debut, the USBWA and the MAC have extended their partnership to host the event for four more years. On Monday, April 15, make plans to honor the best from the world of college basketball for the 2018-19 season.

In addition to the three awards that were presented last year, the presentation of the Ann Meyers Drysdale Women’s Player of the Year Award will be added to the program.

“The CBA is an annual highlight on the USBWA calendar, replete with the game’s luminaries,” said USBWA President David Test. “We are grateful to the Missouri Athletic Cub for hosting this celebration of college basketball.”

The Voice of the Mizzou Tigers, Mike Kelly, will return as the banquet’s emcee.

The Foundations' Gala, sponsored by Stifel, delivered an elegant evening of cocktails, red carpet photos, themed food stations, and live music by Griffin and the Gargoyles. Past President Gives Back to the Club At the end of November, just a couple weeks after he had attended the November Forever Young Club meeting, the Missouri Athletic Club received word that Past President Bill Conway passed away peacefully at his home. He had just celebrated his 83rd birthday.

Loving husband of 57 years to Barbara L. Conway (née Ackerman); dear father of Kenneth Conway, Daniel (Claudia) Conway, Elizabeth (Scott) Meier, and Michael (Jane) Conway; proud grandfather of Miranda and Dylan Conway, Mikey and Maria Conway, and Madeline, Evan, and Joe Meier; beloved brother of the late Marie Conway; and friend to many.

He was active in the investment industry for more than 50 years and was well-respected by his clients and industry peers. In 1976, Bill founded his own brokerage firm, William J. Conway & Co., Inc., and built a successful firm.

Mr. Conway will be dearly missed by his friends at the Missouri Athletic Club. He joined in 1972 and served as President from 1988-1989. During that time, he was instrumental in the

movement to allow female members into the Club. Mr. Conway had a deep admiration for the Club.

A couple of years ago, Mr. Conway contacted Cynthia Goudy, Director of Foundations, about remembering the MAC Preservation Foundation in his estate plans. He sat down with Larry Absheer, CFO at the time, and Goudy, and spoke about his devotion to the Club and how he desired to help the future generations of the MAC. Early this year, the Club received Mr. Conway’s planned gift.

The Club is honored to receive this gift and looks forward to stewarding Mr. Conway’s wishes.

Join the MAC’s Golf Club and the KTRS 550 AM to kick off the 2019 golf season with a reception and presentation featuring golf greats Jay Randolph Sr. and Jay Randolph Jr. Tom Ackerman will emcee the presentation.

Jay Randolph Sr. has been a personality on the St. Louis airwaves for nearly half a century and was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 2008. He served as sports director for KSDK for 21 years and went on to broadcast PGA/LPGA golf for NBC sports.

For more than 20 years, Jay Randolph Jr. has been a sports radio broadcaster on KTRS 550. According to KTRS, during that time, he has covered 24 major golf championships along with a number of other high-profile sporting evening.

Before becoming a radio personality, he played golf in high school and college with the goal of becoming a professional golfer until he changed career goals and paths, and now talks all things golf instead of playing.

During the program, the MAC Sports Foundation will present Ozzie Smith with a check for his charitable foundation, PGA Reach. The mission of PGA Reach is to positively impact the lives of youth, military, and diverse populations by enabling access to PGA professionals, PGA sections and the game of golf.

GOLF SUMMER CAMP St. Louis Golf Lessons’ owner Maria Palozola will conduct a junior summer camp that covers all aspects of golf for all skill levels June 25-29 and Aug. 6-10 from 9-11 a.m.

PGA JUNIOR LEAGUE REGISTRATION NOW OPEN The MAC will field two teams in the PGA Junior League again this year. PGA Junior League is a fun, social league for kids ages 7-13 to learn the game of golf from LPGA and PGA professionals.

Participants play on scramble teams with friends and wear numbered jerseys. They will play approximately three home and three away matches against other teams. Team members rotate in and out of their group through the nine holes. Depending on the number of players on the team at each particular match children may play three holes or even nine holes.

The league will have six practices, but note that this is a social play program, not an instruction program. Practices are held on Fridays and matches are typically late on Saturdays and Sundays.

The Puffin Pre-team is for younger swimmers (ages three to five) who cannot yet swim the full length of the pool. The six-week Puffin Pre-team season offers practice two or three days a week and starts on Tuesday, June 4.

PRE-MATCH PREPARATION

WEEKS IN ADVANCE Because it is important to go into your tennis game physically fit, tennis should not be your only form of exercise. Players with better muscle tone will usually have more control over their body movement and thus be more accurate placing their shots.

Players who have better aerobic endurance will make fewer errors near the end of a match. And players who are flexible will be less likely to get injured on the court. The above aspects of the game cannot be taken care of on the day of your match. If you only stretch one day a week, a few minutes before you play, you are not really becoming more flexible. You are warming up your body, and that is good, but muscle strength, tone and endurance all come from sustained workouts over the long haul.

THE MORNING OF When you start the day, recognize whether

you are generally having a good day or not.

Do you find little annoyances more agitating than normal? Do you feel uptight about other things happening in your life? If your answer is “yes” to these types of questions, you should mentally prepare yourself for a similar response on the court. Since playing tennis could possibly add to your frustrations try to 1) use the tennis itself to be a momentary relief from other stressors, 2) be more patient with yourself and others, and 3) focus on being 100% in the moment mentally. By doing these things, it will enhance your tennis enjoyment and also benefit your overall well-being.

MINUTES BEFORE Most injuries happen during the beginning or near the end of a workout because at these times we are either inadequately warmed-up or have reached the point of muscle fatigue. To get warmed-up before a

match, simply reserve five to ten minutes for a short aerobic workout. Although a warmup can be accomplished on the court while hitting, it is more effective to do with a short treadmill or jump rope routine before you set foot on the court. The purpose of this exercise is to increase the blood flow going into your muscles in order to prepare them for the quick and more abrupt movements that are about to be asked of them.

THE ON-COURT WARM-UP At this point, you want to have all of your previous preparation work in your favor: Feel the confidence of being well prepared, plan on being patient with yourself and those with whom you are playing, keep the pace of your shots slow at first and work into harder hit shots, run nice and easy at first and plan on sprinting to the ball as you get more and more warmed-up, and then relax and have fun!

HARLEY LEARNED FROM TENNIS LEGENDS Michael Harley is a St. Louis native who learned from the teachings of Gloria Connors in Belleville to first become an excellent player and later an outstanding teaching pro. As a junior player, he quickly became nationally ranked. To make greater improvements, Michael trained at IMG and was also coached by Arthur Ashe and Nick Bollettieri. From junior competition, he moved on to college where he played at the University of Illinois under Craig Tiley.

Michael has 18 years of teaching experience, mostly in Florida and most recently at Saddlebrook Tennis Resort and Spa in Tampa. He is USPTA certified with training by the USTA in “Quick Start” and Cardio Tennis.

Michael has had a life-long passion for tennis and has gained knowledge from playing competitively and from each of his coaches along his tennis journey. He has a

I often hear comments describing how professional tennis players make everything look so “effortless.” Besides endless hours of practice, the pros DO have a secret that is not often known by the average player. That secret is a “loose grip.” In today’s game, it is essential to hold the racquet loosely. After all, don’t we want “the racquet to do the work?”

In a recent survey of the top 20 U.S. touring tennis professionals, players were asked to rate their grip pressure during three stages of their swing: (1) During the backswing, (2) at the point of contact, and (3) during the follow through. The answers were recorded on a scale from 0-10, with 10 being the tightest and 0 being the loosest. All pros gave one of two answers: 0-2-0, or 1-3-1! In life, a lot of us tend to be “control enthusiasts,” as I can relate.

New Therapist Delivers Relief Sara Kammerlen recently joined the Downtown Clubhouse’s Athletic Department staff as a massage therapist. Her responsibilities include customizing and performing individualized massage treatment plans for clients. She has been licensed by the state of Missouri since 2012.

Sara specializes in therapeutic massage, which uses an adaptable pressure to relieve tension within the muscle. She also uses a lot of Myofascial release techniques, which helps to restore balance to the musculature system.

Hal Makes Splash in Barbados In November, MAC member Hal Ball completed a five kilometer open water swim race in Barbados. His time of one-hour and 34 minutes placed him sixth in his age group.

During the past three years, Hal has also participated in the fivemile “Buck to Buck” swim race in St. Croix and the 10K “Round the Sound” race in Bermuda. The MAC has played an important role in preparing him for these challenging competitions.

“Many of the open water swim races are held in November so the MAC pool being open until late October is a real bonus,” said Ball. “Especially this year, as an exceptionally warm October kept temperatures above 70° for most of the month.”

Hal encourages anyone who likes to swim to try an open ocean race and to call him for details. He says it is a lot of fun and a great excuse to go to the islands in November.

As a Platinum Club of America, the Missouri Athletic Club ranks among the top five percent of private clubs in the United States. OVERNIGHT GUEST ROOMS In 2015, the MAC renovated nine hotel rooms that had been offline for many years. The renovation included new carpeting, paint, bathroom fixtures, TVs and more. Since then, the MAC has continued to renovate small blocks of rooms at a time, which allows the hotel

to continue to operate with minimal disruption while improving its facility standard. The MAC’s maintenance team handles these renovations, which allows for significant cost savings for the Club.

The MAC’s Preservation Foundation largely finances these renovations.

PACE PROJECT The Downtown Clubhouse was the first building west of the Mississippi to have air conditioning, which was installed between 1934 and 1941, and it still had most of the original air handlers and controllers in 2015. Then, the MAC partnered with the city’s Set the PACE St. Louis program in conjunction with Trane heating and air conditioning. This program allowed the MAC to upgrade its HVAC system to comply with green energy initiatives with no out-of-pocket costs. Monies from the Preservation Foundation allowed the MAC to complete this project without pulling from the Club’s general revenue. This approximately $2.3 million capital project was in development for several years following an energy grade audit. While the aesthetics of this project were nominal, the energy efficiency increased dramatically and was projected to generate $200,000 a year in energy savings.

1903 BAR AND DINING ROOM In response to a member survey, in 201516, the MAC expanded its West Clubhouse to add a 1,600 square foot adults-only bar and patio, plus a renovation to the business dining room. The project cost approximately $1.2 million. The new bar with its rich woods, fine finishes, comfortable seating, and fireplace has become a favorite amenity of current members and attracts many new members.

5M FUNCTIONAL TRAINING ROOM In 2017, the golf simulator room on 5M in the Downtown Clubhouse's Athletic Department was transformed into a Functional Training Room to be used for personal training, group exercise classes and dynamic workouts. The renovated room featured all-new equipment, including TRX straps, a water rowing machine, free weights and a punching bag.

11TH FLOOR GROUP EXERCISE ROOM In 2017-18, the 11th floor judo room at the Downtown Clubhouse was renovated and converted into a Group Exercise Room.

The MAC’s maintenance team gutted and rebuilt the roughly 2,200 square foot space with new paint, lighting, ventilation fans, HVAC, flooring, mirrors, sound system and fitness equipment. The equipment included free weights, a TRX system, water rowing machine, AstroTurf strip for weight cardio exercises, a variety of punching bags, and more. The room is primarily used for group exercise classes and personal training sessions. Fitness class attendance at the Downtown Clubhouse

has increased since the completion of this renovation.

MEN’S AND WOMEN’S RESTROOMS In the spring of 2018, the women’s restroom on 1M at the Downtown Clubhouse received a facelift to improve the aesthetics and better appeal to the many brides and bridal parties who utilize the space for their big day.

renovations in 2018 and reopened in August that year. The design of the space mirrors the sleek look of the men’s restroom on the first floor.

DOWNTOWN CLUBHOUSE INDOOR POOL From late August to early October 2018, the Downtown Clubhouse pool underwent an entire renovation including a brandnew paint job and pool deck refinishing.

The ceiling and upper walls were scraped free of lead paint, patched, and repainted,

and a brand-new exhaust fan was installed.

A very generous member donated a gift to fund this project, and member-company JTW Restoration Services, Inc. completed the renovation.

WEST CLUBHOUSE FITNESS EXPANSION AND RENOVATION PROJECT In early 2018, the Board of Governors approved a two-phase plan to expand and renovate the fitness areas at the West Clubhouse. The project took a design-

Phase One A & B Phase One began in April 2018 and was completed in January 2019. During Phase One, the stadium racquetball court was demolished to expand the adjoining weight room, and a Mind and Body Studio designed specifically for yoga and barre classes was built in the mezzanine level above the weight room. The Mind and Body studio opened in October 2018, and the fully expanded and renovated weight room opened in January 2019, featuring new equipment such as dumbbells with self-leveling logo, power racks, a lifting area for power movements, a cable station and more. The project included a full renovation and remodel of the walls, flooring, equipment and layout.

The majority of member feedback has been extremely positive since the space reopened.

Phase Two Phase Two designs include improvements to the existing cardio and fitness class areas as well as adding specialty training rooms. This portion of the project is slated to begin in September.

DOWNTOWN CLUBHOUSE WEIGHT ROOM Renovation of the Downtown Clubhouse’s weight room began in November 2018.

All-new equipment was delivered in midDecember, and the completely refreshed space opened in early January 2019. The new design mirrors the look and feel of the recently renovated spaces on 5M and the 11th floor.

JACK BUCK GRILLE Looking towards the future, this popular dining and happy hour space at the Downtown Clubhouse is slated to undergo renovations towards the end of the 201819 fiscal year.

Mark Twain Society Shindig The Mark Twain Society (MTS) served up a good time at their Redemption Bourbon and Rye Tasting. Members and guests enjoyed hors d’oeuvres while sampling a true American original from the award-winning Deutsch Family Wine & Spirits. Carefully hand-crafted in the river town of Lawrenceburg, Ind. at the 168-year-old MGP Distillery, Redemption Rye’s goal is to revive the classic American Rye

cocktail with floral, citrus and mint notes.

The Mark Twain Society offers opportunities throughout the year for members to meet, socialize and dine in a relaxed atmosphere while enjoying a cocktail, cigar and hors d’oeuvres. The MTS’s next event is an Irish Whiskey Tasting on Wed., March 13 leading up to St. Patrick’s Day. Attend the event to get in the holiday spirit!

Bill Medart won the 900-point contest in the Boys’ Classes. Points could be accumulated in the contest in 75 stunts including track, tumbling, accuracy in shooting the basketball from various positions, stall bars and similar events. Medart posted 855 out of a possible 900 points in the test of all-around athleticism.

1929

Indoor baseball was popular at the Club. Six teams would compete in the gym every week for top honors. Heading into the home stretch, the team captained by Lenny Woods was closing in on the championship. Ollie Kurrus was the top pitcher in the league with three victories. There were also some outstanding hitting performances, led by J.R. Higgins who was described as “an old timer” posting a batting average of .800.

An air of excitement found only in the most competitive sports was evidenced in the MAC pool when 52 MAC youngsters swam at their annual championship meet. Even more excited than the youngsters were the parents who cheered lustily from the grandstand throughout the 16 events.
