from the president The Missouri Athletic Club just finished one of the best Foundations’ Months in history. Thank you to those who supported the Preservation, Sports and Arts Foundations through your donations and support of the All-Star Program. On Aug. 26, we held the Foundations’ Golf Classic presented by the Stacie Lee Belew Scholarship Fund and Redbird Carriers. This year’s event was in memory of Past President Kim Tucci. Thank you to Past President John Bugh, Past President Mark Belew, Governor Mark Brandom, Governor John Pennington, Past Governor Tim Powers and Past President Dean Eggerding for your leadership of this event. I’d also like to extend a thank you to all the players and sponsors who make this a mustattend event at the MAC. Thank you to our great staff, including Director of Special Events Katie Maurer, who worked tirelessly to make this a first-class event. In other foundations news, the Trulaske Campaign is going great. I’m grateful to the foundation staff, who have been driving this important campaign to restore the exterior of our amazing downtown facility. If you have not been able to offer your support, please review all the material on the website and around the clubhouse. Please contact Larry Absheer or Cynthia Goudy to discuss how you can part of the restoration of our downtown facility. This month, the Club starts its new fiscal year. The numbers for the past accounting year are not finalized, but based on what we have done year-to-date and with no major issues being forecasted, we will end the year on a positive note. As we look forward, the MAC will continue to grow with sound fiscal management. We will have challenges like any other entity in the region with minimum wage concerns, competition, and increased day-to-day cost. The board is committed to making sure our members receive the premier experience we expect. Thanks to the staff for making this happen. One of our biggest projects for the new fiscal year will be the phase two project at

4 F Cherry Diamond F SEPT 2019

MAC’s West Clubhouse. Our members asked for it, and we will deliver it. Past President Robertson and Past President Schoedel drove these upgrades to reality, and this board is committed to finishing their vision. The Jack Buck Grille and other important projects are still in the planning stage, but each day they are one step closer to happening. In the month of September, a bylaw change request will be put forth to the members to vote on. It involves changing the definition of a member from the single entity to one that includes a married partner. Presently, only one person is considered a primary member, with the spouse (male or female) considered equal in most benefits of the Club, but not all. The non-primary is restricted from certain committees and board representation. In the year 2019, the Club has made great strides for inclusion of all. This change helps continue the process. The bylaw change request just makes all married members equal in all parts of club involvement. Please exercise your right to vote. The MAC has implemented online voting to make the process more convenient and respectful of your time. You will be receiving instruction from the Club on how to use the system and the voting dates. As we move into the fall season, the Club starts the beginning of a busy stretch of months. Halloween is just around the corner, and I am hoping you are keeping the MAC in your holiday plans. We’re open for business, and we offer a premier catering experience for your private events. We have plenty of fitness classes to help keep the holiday meals off, and basketball season is in full swing, with league games every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday night. The Clubs within the Club are meeting and helping drive the member value. Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner will be here soon. Make sure you are checking the MAC’s social media platforms for info on the always-sold-out Family Brunch with Santa. In October, we will honor the legacy of Bob Barnes, a longtime member of the MAC and an individual who constantly stressed “member

retention.” The 10th Annual Silver Racquet Tennis Championship, which now honors Bob Barnes, will be held 9 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 26 at the West Clubhouse. We have several member and guest events scheduled, along with a Family Fun Tennis experience after the tournament. Please check the MAC website for additional information. We look forward to your participation. November brings with it the Veterans Day Commemoration that has honored veterans in the St. Louis area for many years. This year’s event is scheduled on Thursday, Nov. 7 at the Downtown Clubhouse with speaker and guest of honor four-star General Joseph L. Lengyel, Chief of the National Guard Bureau. Invited guests include bi-state government leaders, representatives from the St. Louis area business community, members of area veterans organizations, present members of the armed forces and the general public. VIP attendees may include the Mayor of St. Louis, county executives, state and national congressional leaders. Last year, there were more than 350 attendees. We encourage you to attend and help us recognize our veterans. Thank you to all the MAC veterans, and God bless. The MAC is more than just a fitness club. We offer a unique and total family experience. Think about the many banquets that are MAC traditions that cannot be duplicated: the Jack Buck Awards, the Hermann Trophy Banquet, the President’s Gala, the Foundations’ Gala, the United States Basketball Writers Dinner and the Women of Distinction luncheon — just to name a few. We are comprised of two clubhouses that host more than 175 events a year and can meet the needs of our members for any services required. The MAC experience can never be duplicated and only truly admired by competitors.

Kevin Cantwell, President Missouri Athletic Club

PAST PRESIDENT WIDEMAN'S COLUMN FROM 1994

Each month, President Cantwell will invite a past president to attend the Board of Governors dinner as his special guest. To illustrate the continuity from past to present, the past president’s column from that month will run alongside the current president’s column in each issue of the Cherry Diamond. Cherry Diamond F SEPT 2019 F 5

from the general manager After reading President Cantwell’s all-inclusive column and realizing he’d covered pretty much everything going on in the Club, I thought I’d go ahead and put together an update on our planning processes wrapping up fiscal year 2019 and kicking off fiscal year 2020, which begins Sept. 1. Our “four A’s” planning process is never-ending and is the system behind our successes. The first A represents the agenda, which we update each year at this time. The agenda includes our operational, capital and strategic initiatives for next fiscal year and also looks outward 10 years with keener focus on the two to three years ahead. Once we set the agenda, which was concluded at our August planning, finance and board meetings, we identify and allocate the resources — our second A. The third A represents activating the work on our agenda. Each A has its significance, and the last A is accounting for the results. Right now as we close out the year, we are in between accountability and activating the agenda for next year. This whole planning cycle never ends. It’s like a wheel in motion with no stop. In terms of accountability, last year’s agenda included a phenomenal remodel of the 5M downtown fitness area, featuring new equipment. We added updates to the cardio room and stretching areas once we got in there to finish off the spaces. We completed Phase One of the West Clubhouse fitness project to rave reviews. We overhauled the plumbing in six hotel rooms that had been leaking and brought them back online, adding to our rooms inventory downtown. We purchased new Chiavari chairs for our banquets and all new state-of-the-art portable staging for our big events, eliminating the need to rent them. We also replaced the rotten wood on the porte-cochère at the West Clubhouse, along with many, many other small projects.

6 F Cherry Diamond F SEPT 2019

We were and are very focused on security. We increased our security capabilities by adding a number of additional cameras and installing significantly more lighting in the parking areas and around the Downtown Clubhouse. And as part of our agenda for next year, we will be completing an in-depth Club-wide security audit with our partner Whelan Security. There are a lot of great things going on downtown, and we are committed to the safety of all our members and guests. Please know you are on camera just about everywhere you go around the two clubhouses, and footage is monitored and recorded constantly. Those are some of the major things we set out to do last year and accomplished. My hat’s off to our team! Now on to the agenda for next year. The key capital project is the completion of Phase Two of our fitness upgrades at West, budgeted at $1.2 million. This project — an offshoot of our 2017 member survey — will take up most of the capital budget for fiscal year 2020. It’s something we need to do and the priority project our members have requested. Therefore, other “want-to-do” capital projects will be at a minimum next year, but we have allocated money to cover the cost of things that come up unexpectedly and emergency-type repairs. We also ear-marked funds to continue design plans for the Jack Buck Grille, which could be slated later in the year. The capital fee on everyone’s statement allows us to keep improving your Club, and the Board has authorized a four percent increase, which will begin in January. The four percent increase averages about $1.50 per month per member, which almost seems insignificant, but with around 2,480 members contributing, it adds $35,500 to our capital budget for fiscal year 2020. The operating budget presented a whole different set of challenges. The new St. Louis minimum wage initiative has increased cost

of labor and will continue to do so for the next three years. There’s also a shrinking labor pool, making it a challenge attracting and keeping great folks who are serviceminded and possess the “hospitality gene” needed to run a Platinum Club successfully. Additionally, we experienced a very high health insurance renewal, despite our best efforts to tweak plans and minimize cost increases. The 29 percent increase was significant, and when you consider our plans cost $1 million per year, it’s easy math to figure out that impact. While dues increases are never the best news, we were able to get our budgets whole with a very modest increase of 2.5 percent, which the Board authorized at the August meeting. The increase will be reflected on your September statement and averages out to $5.10 per member. Again, when you put the power of our full membership behind that, it adds up to approximately $202,000 and will just about offset the additional cost of insurance and labor. The good news is that we can continue on with our survey strategies and member updates, and we’ll be able to complete the $1.2 million West Clubhouse project out of the cash flow. And finally, please remember that our three buckets — Membership, Rooms and Catering — are as important as ever. Keeping our eyes focused on those areas allows us to keep membership cost increases to a minimum and still undertake the projects and provide the programs we need to do for you, our members. See you at the Club,

Wally Smith, General Manager Missouri Athletic Club

CHARITABLE SOCIETY FOR CHILDREN

2019 Charity Highlight

Nominated by Director of New Opportunities, Najah Fennoy, the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Foundation works to change lives of at-risk children in East St. Louis and communities across the U.S. The foundation encourages kids to have dreams and helps them gain the confidence and drive to achieve them. The foundation features an after-school program, athletic programs and summer camps. Their Winning in Life program also helps children build character, determination and self-esteem to prepare them for an amazing future. The mission of the Jackie Joyner-Kersee Foundation is to instill in youth from the Greater East St. Louis area with the dream, drive and determination to succeed in academics, athletics and leadership. After returning from college in Texas, Fennoy saw the good that the foundation was doing for youth in East St. Louis and wanted to be a part of it. Soon after, she joined the team as the Education Manager. “My father always said, if you’re in a place to give back, you do. Just to be able to give back and help and have a job doing that was very fulfilling. Even now, to see some of the formerly at-risk kids

thriving and doing well now is just so gratifying.” Although she has since left the position, she still believes in what the organization is doing in East St. Louis and other communities, which is why she nominated them to be one of the CSC Charities of 2019.

PAUL HELFRICH AND SUSAN TRAMELLI EXPLAIN THE FITNESS AND WELLNESS OFFERINGS OF THE CLUB TO GUESTS.

Potential new members gathered at the West Clubhouse on Thursday, Aug. 8 for Taste & Tour. This event gave prospective members the chance to learn more about Club offerings and get a taste of membership. This year, staff educated attendees on programs and amenities at various tables such as membership, athletics, dining, social offering and more. Junior Team Tennis Stands Out at MAC! The Missouri Athletic Club is one of the top two clubs in St. Louis for Junior Team Tennis (JTT), with more than 120 participants! Each age group (10U-18U) has different levels of play, and the MAC had 10 teams this season and six coaches. On July 13 the MAC hosted JTT District Championship matches with great results. Under Margaret Junker’s coaching, three of her teams made the finals at Districts: F MAC 18U Advanced won the District Championships with an undefeated season! F MAC 14U Gold won the District Championships! F MAC 10 U Orange teams coached by Margaret Junker merged to finish in second place. Also placing at Districts were: F MAC 10U Green – second place, coached by Amanda Pratzel. F MAC 14U Silver – seventh place, also coached by Amanda. F MAC 14U Silver – eighth place, coached by Elliott Miller. Showing the team’s depth, there were three additional MAC 18U Gold teams that played for the MAC, but did not qualify for the District Tournament: F MAC 18U Gold – Finished third place in their bracket, coached by Will McKinney. F MAC 18U Gold - Finished fourth place in their bracket. Great showing for a team that was supposed to play 14 advanced, but no other teams in St. Louis registered for 14 advanced so we decided to move the team to 18U Gold. This team was coached by Max Shapiro. F MAC 18U Gold – Finished sixth place in their bracket, coached by Faycal Ibnabdeljalil.

Congratulations to all our teams for a great summer season!

TENNIS TIP By Kim Steinmetz

Correctly anticipating an opponents’ next shot will put rivals, literally, one step ahead of them, while guessing wrong will put them one step behind! Watching a player’s racquet can help in detecting what shot is coming. For example, an open racquet face may indicate a lob, a high-to-low swing will indicate a slice (and possibly a drop shot), and a low-to-high swing could mean a topspin is on its way. These are important things to help prepare, but it is very difficult to read a racquet in time to see which direction the ball will be hit. The best way to prepare for that is to note the opponents’ movement and court positioning before and during their shot. Here are some tips to see what’s coming. 1. When hitting a very short ball that the opponent has trouble reaching, look for a short shot in return. They just may not have enough power to do anything other than that. 2. Expect more crosscourt shots from a two-handed backhand, verses a one-handed one. 3. After hitting a deep shot that pulls the opponent back and wide, expect a down-the-line shot from them. They will likely have trouble getting to the outside of the ball in order to hit a successful crosscourt shot. 4. When hitting at an angle that pulls the opponent up and out, anticipate the return to be a crosscourt shot that has more angle. For the opponent, running forward at an angle gives them a natural crosscourt swing. 5. Realize it is difficult for players to change the direction of the rally if they are having trouble timing the ball. This means the more power on the shot, the more that person will be in the driver’s seat more often. However, more power is not worth a high loss of consistency. 6. Most players have trouble hitting backhand returns down-the-line. 7. When a right-handed player’s toss goes off to the right a bit, the result is often a swing that curves around the ball creating side-spin and a wide serve into the deuce court. These are suggestions to use when entering a match where we do not know our opponents’ game. However, every player is likely to have favorite shots and atypical habits and abilities, so it is important to adjust anticipation as any match progresses. The sooner a person realizes their opponents’ propensity for certain shots in given situations, the sooner that person will find him or herself getting that one step ahead again! GOOD LUCK!

Your ANTICIPATION should be peaked for the upcoming Bob Barnes Silver Racquet Tennis Championship and Family Fun Tennis Day coming Oct. 26! Cherry Diamond F SEPT 2019 F 13

Inspired by the reality TV series “Shark Tank,” MAC Tank will feature an ambitious set of five entrepreneurs presenting their pitches to a panel of judges and battling it out to be named the MAC Tank “best investment.”

The competitors are entrepreneurs from the St. Louis startup ecosystem, and attendees will recognize names like Arch Grants, T-REX, ITEN, Capital Innovators and RISE Collaborative Workspace amongst the competitors. F Arch Grants is a nonprofit organization that is building a new economy by providing $50,000 equity-free grants and pro bono support services to entrepreneurs who locate their early-stage businesses in St. Louis. F T-REX is a nonprofit technology startup incubator and world- class venue providing the early-stage entrepreneur with low cost and flexible enterprise space, while serving the region with quality programming and inspiring community collaboration. F ITEN provides programs for rapid development of scalable tech ventures, engaging experienced entrepreneurs to help others build successful, growing companies. F Capital Innovators provides startups and corporations with the resources and connections they need to get to the next level. Through proprietary processes and techniques developed and iterated on over the program's seven-year history, the Accelerator Program has consistently been ranked as one of the top programs in the United States. F RISE Collaborative Workspace is a dynamic and carefully curated community of women who want to see each other succeed. It’s a state-of-the-art, light-filled, flexible workspace where women can be productive and professional in whatever they’re pursuing. RISE Collaborative is a resource for events and programs where members learn and grow. Though these companies are already in production and have customers, MAC Tank gives them the chance to win a $1,000 prize. They’ll also each receive more than $3,000 in complimentary legal advice from MAC Tank presenting sponsor Polsinelli. MAC General Manager Wally Smith said he’s excited to shine a light on the startup community in St. Louis through this brand-new event. “Our area has proven itself to be one of the many successful cities trying to establish an economy that can thrive in the startup world, and civic leaders, investors and financial institutions are joining together to support this movement,” he said. “Formerly one of the country’s largest and most affluent cities, St. Louis is

transforming its economy with creatives and it’s working! This will be a fun evening full of heightened energy, investment opportunities and entertainment for all in attendance.” The pitch competition will be judged by local subject-matter experts, including Arch Grants board president (and MAC member) Bob Guller, Matter Family Office partner Whitney Kenter and Empowered Strategy founder Mario Hunt. Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship regional senior manager Chyna Bowen will serve as MAC Tank’s host and will guide attendees through the evening’s events. The night will kick off with a networking reception at 5 p.m., where the five companies will be onsite to showcase their products and services. At 6:15, everyone will convene in the Missouri Room for the official pitch competition. During this time, members and guests will watch as the entrepreneurs introduce their products and services to the panel of judges. Afterwards, guests will return to the Art Lounge while the judges deliberate. At this time, guests will also have the opportunity to meet the entrepreneurs and even invest if they are interested. The event will close with the announcement of the “best investment,” and the winner will be presented with the $1,000 prize. HOME IMPROVEMENT 360 Before beginning a home improvement project of any kind, keep these tips and tricks in mind.

FIND THE RIGHT CONTRACTOR Renovating homes can be an exciting process, but it can also be overwhelming and exhausting, especially with a bad contractor. Although the best contractors are often recommended by family, friends or realtors, websites like Houzz and Home Advisor can be excellent lead generators for

high-quality contractors. Before speaking with contractors, take note of how much each project usually costs to get a more accurate estimate of the project’s price. It is best to interview at least three contractors before deciding on one. Ask questions like the following to compare each interviewee.

1. How long will this project take to be completed? 2. Who will be working onsite every day? 3. How will you communicate with me? 4. Do you have any concerns about the project? 5. Should an unexpected issue arise, will I be included in the decision? 6. How do I reach you after hours? 7. When do I need to be available to meet? 8. What kind of documentation will I receive upon completion of the project?

VISION Gain a clear vision of how the finished product should look. Not everyone can have the perfect, HGTV-style home, but having a clear idea of how the space should look will help prevent any regret later. Clip ideas from magazines, create a Pinterest board, talk to friends who have done similar remodels or projects, and search stores and online for products and inspiration. Not a visual person? Hiring a designer can also help achieve design goals. Another way to begin a redesign is to

survey the space to be renovated. Does it have a large fireplace that was previously hidden? Is there a large picture window that has been underutilized? Emphasizing characteristics that are already in place will help create a unique space while also being budget-friendly. STICK TO THE BUDGET Do the necessary homework before beginning on a project by speaking to friends, going online or using residential remodeling estimating software. Aim to save the necessary funds ahead of time and tack on an additional 20 percent to the total expense for any unexpected obstacles. During the project, regularly check with the contractor to make sure the project is not over-budget. BE REALISTIC Dreaming about the perfect room or design of any renovation or project can help people achieve their deepest design desires, but it is important to have realistic expectations within the budget. For example, perhaps that beautiful bathroom tile can be installed

later. If a certain aspect of the renovation or project can’t be nixed, see if the renovation can be completed in stages to allow for better budget adherence. RENOVATE FOR THE FUTURE Sticking to classic designs is always safe; trends are for accessorizing, not for a renovation. Those fun-colored cabinets might look great now but will be a hassle to replace should tastes change. Investing in quality finishes and timeless colors will ensure that the renovation remains relevant long into the future. CHECK-IN EVERY DAY Even with an incredibly trustworthy and competent contractor, try to make daily on-site check-ins. Mistakes and miscommunication can always occur, so by keeping an open dialogue, renovators can ensure their project will turn out as expected. The longer a mistake goes unseen, the more expensive it will be to fix. Another benefit of keeping in contact with the contractor is being updated on the schedule. Setbacks in both renovation and

personal schedules can change daily so this communication can help provide a realistic date for when the remodel will be finished. HAVE FUN Although home renovations and projects require a lot of time, attention and money, keep in mind that the finished product is around the corner! Nothing is more rewarding than seeing a space transformed by excellent design decisions and expert craftsmanship.

SOMETHING Exceptional

As a Missouri Athletic Club member, I am regularly humbled by my fellow members. The abundance of talented professionals and successful business leaders challenges me to be a better person, a better husband, a better father, a better businessman and a better community member. That’s why I have chosen to contribute my time, talent and treasure to the MAC. When I wear a shirt embroidered with the MAC logo, I know I am representing something exceptional — a piece of St. Louis history. When I joined Mosby Building Arts in 2010, I felt a similar way. The fabric of Mosby Building Arts’ culture has been woven with integrity, honesty, respect, creativity, teamwork and most importantly, family. Like the MAC, Mosby offered me the chance to be a part of something unique and extraordinary, and a significant piece of St. Louis history. What I didn’t realize when I joined Mosby was how broken the home remodeling industry was and remains today. When homeowners consider remodeling their homes, they face a highly fractured industry. An industry known for causing headaches for homeowners through significant cost overruns, time delays, poor quality and just plain bad behaviors. With the sheer multitude of companies to navigate, homeowners often find themselves stuck in bad situations. Just like the MAC, Mosby Building Arts provides a path for experiencing the extraordinary. A path allowing a homeowner to design and acquire the vision of their home through a process and experience that exceeds what’s expected from the tarnished home remodeling industry. Mosby Building Arts gives the homeowner full control over any aspect of their home, from the inside out, bathrooms, kitchens, basements, additions, windows, siding, and more.

Most of my waking time is spent at the Missouri Athletic Club and Mosby Building Arts. And, I am both proud and humbled. — Mark McClanahan, President 26 F Cherry Diamond F SEPT 2019

Splish, Splash Colorful and imaginative boats filled the West Clubhouse pool on Aug. 16 for the third annual Boat Regatta. Among the ranks were a variety of creations, including the Hecho a Mano and Duct Tape: Seiss Kirkpatrick Cigar Company boat from the Dr. Beth and Doug Russell family and The Ugly Duct-ling from

the Todd and Lauren Keske family, which respectively won first and second place in the Most Creative category. As parents and friends cheered, each team paddled their hardest in their cardboard boats across the pool. After several rounds (and several sunken boats), the Stanley Cup/FIFA Women’s World

Cup boat from the Hickey family reached the finish line first, followed by the Bahr family’s pirate ship in second place. Still reeling from the excitement of the races, families gathered around (and in) the pool once more for the Dive-In Movie, “Ralph Breaks the Internet.”

Almost Paradise

The West Clubhouse pool deck was transformed into a Hawaiian paradise on Saturday, July 27 as the Associates hosted a luau pool party for the membership. Members were decked out in their “island-best” while they enjoyed a tropical paradise and MAC camaraderie. A pig roast, coconut cilantro rice, pineapple stir-fry and fresh fruit satisfied the hunger while Mai Tais and draft beer freely flowed all evening. Those who donated $25 to the Club’s foundations received a special pineapple cup for bottomless Mai Tais! The Soulard Island Dudes set the night to music, and the pool was open to those wanting to take a dip.
