LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT hrough this pandemic and all my years as a Member, I have come to value the MAC and its amazing membership and staff in a unique way. Whether it’s a familiar face walking into the Clubhouse, a Member who stops to ask about a recent Club event or a staff member offering a helping hand with an infectious smile, I’ve come to value the Club’s constant positive presence in my life. As summer ends, a new fiscal year begins at the Missouri Athletic Club. September is the start of the 2022 fiscal year for the MAC. It goes without saying that the last 18 months have had their share of ups and downs. Every time we believe we are rising out of the pandemic, we are forced to face another challenge. At this moment, we are focused on maneuvering through the constant unknown of the COVID-19 Delta variant and low vaccination rates. I am forever grateful for one constant thing in our lives: the MAC. In our August meeting, the Board of Governors approved the FY 2022 budget. The Board was clear: Our focus should be on investing for the future to stay relevant, all by staying true to our commitment to be disciplined in our financial management. This year, the Board of Governors and our staff achieved this goal even during times of uncertainty and, for that, I’d like to thank them for their exceptional stewardship. One thing is for certain, we all want the MAC around for another 100-plus years. And we can do this if we stay focused on responsible fiscal management. I’d like to highlight some key elements of our FY2022 plan. F Overcoming Pandemic Realities: The Missouri Athletic Club is not alone with some of the challenges we are facing. Like other companies, we are experiencing increased costs for everything from insurance to security, to food and toilet paper. And, in this extremely competitive hospitality market, we are increasing our wages to keep staff and maintain the premier level of service our Members expect and deserve. The bottom line… It costs us more to operate the MAC than it did pre-pandemic. To help offset these rising costs, you will notice a small dues increase on your Aug. 31 statement. The average increase across membership categories is less than $7.50 per month and will help ensure the premier experience you count on when you visit your Club. More information will be coming soon about the increase, and the Board and I thank you in advance for your understanding. F Sustaining our Future: With the uncertainty of the pandemic and the continued economic fluctuation, the Board remains diligent in securing the Club’s financial stability. The Finance Committee recommended, and the Board approved the creation of a cash reserve through the budget process with a goal to achieve a

1:1 current ratio. Due to the Employee Retention Tax Credits (ERTC) from the federal government, we now have a cash reserve to protect us from the unknown challenges like the ones we’ve witnessed in the past year and a half. I’m proud to also say we continue to meet our obligations with our pension requirement, securing the future financial wellbeing of our staff, which in turn fuels the future of our Club. F Enhancing Our Club: Elevating our Member experience and providing more engagement opportunities are key priorities of mine during my term as President. To stay relevant, we must invest in opportunities to increase the premier service provided by the Missouri Athletic Club. Moving forward, we plan to continue to fund these experiences and capital improvements through operating cash flow. We are in a good financial situation to ensure the MAC remains a constant for many years to come. MEMBER HIGHLIGHT: This month I would like to highlight 19 of our Members who are in a very special category of our membership. These long-time MAC Members comprise what we are calling the MAC 150 Club. To be eligible for inclusion in this very exclusive group, a Member’s age and the number of years he or she has been a Member must equal at least 150. On Aug. 6, when he turned 88, James Breckenridge became the newest Member of the MAC 150 Club. Mr. Breckenridge joined the MAC 62 years ago. The other Members we are very proud to recognize are Shirley Sher, Don Nies, Jack Bodine, Roger Altvater, Cliff Kurrus, Ralph Zitzmann, Sally Bakula, Tony Bommarito, Ed Corich, Joan Sheehan, Joe McGlynn, Ben Bishop, Bob Wunderlich, Robert Concannon, John Steuby, Joe Lipic, William Zielinski and James Smith. LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER he Preservation Foundation was started many years ago by MAC visionary leaders Don Gunn, Gerry Ortbals and the late Kim Tucci who saw an opportunity to create a foundation that would help in maintaining and the preservation our beautiful historic Downtown building. Through their vision and forethought, over $1 million has been raised and invested back into our wonderful Clubhouse. A huge thank you to all those who helped and contributed during August, which we highlight as our Foundations’ Month. We are also so grateful to the Robert J. Trulaske Jr. Family Foundation and all of our Members who helped us last year in restoring the outside of the Downtown Clubhouse by raising more than $500,000. A big thank you to all who participated in this year’s fundraisers, including the golf tournament and our car raffle, sponsored by Mungenast St. Louis Acura. The MAC has always been a philanthropic organization, and we are so thankful to all of our Members who have helped us carry on that tradition! The Club created an All-Star program a few years ago with a monthly give of some amount added to Members’ statements. Whether it’s $5 or $100, it all adds up and is mostly directed to the Preservation Foundation. New Members have an opportunity to direct a portion of their initiation fee to the Foundation as a way to introduce our MAC community engagement and our charitable spirit. We have a number of Members and several of our employees who give monthly. In fact, our staff contributed $10,000 to the Downtown restoration project, and I know of a few staff members who have included the MAC in their estate plans and will leave a sizable amount of money to the MAC. Many of you know we put the MAC - Glen Echo Country Club partnership together in 2018 with the goal of increasing value for our Members interested in golf and the full “country club” experience. Due to this visionary effort of the MAC, we now have more than 110 of our Members participating in the program. Glen Echo has had a very strong year as a result of the influx of MAC participation and is now able to do some capital projects and explore how they can improve programs and facilities. I recently sat in on a Glen Echo history presentation. It was fascinating to see how Glen Echo and the MAC came about at the same time and for the same purpose:

to participate in the 1904 Olympics. Glen Echo was the brainchild of George McGrew and his son-in-law, Albert Bond Lambert, who were visionaries and dreamt up the idea of having championship golf in St. Louis. They stated that it would be the Olympic golf course and hold a championship before they even selected the site where it now sits. They pulled it off, and it was showcased in the Olympics a few years later. As a golfer and lover of golf course architecture, I admire how the bones of Glen Echo have not changed since it opened up. It is still as relevant and beautiful as it was in 1904. Like a great old wine, it has gotten better with age. From a new membership standpoint, we view this partnership as us having three Clubhouses, and to me, it’s the best value for a club experience in the St. Louis area. I want to say thank you to our past Board Members, who saw the benefit of this program and supported our efforts. And a big shout-out to leadership at Glen Echo that saw the value of this partnership, too. We’re only going to get stronger as we grow together! EMPLOYEE HIGHLIGHT: This month, I’d like to highlight Pam Roth, the MAC’s CFO. Pam’s been with us for more than two decades and has done an incredible job over the years. She started as our accounting manager and got to know all the ins and outs of this complicated business. Pam was on track to move into the CFO position and stepped into the role after Larry Absheer retired, never missing a beat. President Minges talks about the budget in her column this month, and it’s always a challenging time of the year for us. A ton of work takes place, and Pam ushers the budget through our department heads, through the finance committee and up to the Board of Governors. We have faced more challenges with budgets over the last couple years than ever before with COVID-19 and starting back up. The great news is we finished our fiscal year just about exactly where we thought we’d be. Forecasting the budget for 2022 has been a lot of work, but with Pam’s leadership it’s been done with her usual smile and grace. Thank you, Pam for all you do for the MAC and for me personally! The Platinum Partnership has been a recruitment tool for the Club since its inception approximately 10 years ago, and it has added a great boost to Club Members referring their friends and colleagues over the years. One side-effect of this program has been the negative effects of losing a Platinum Partner who resigns or takes a leave from the Club. This negative aspect has especially come to light during the pandemic and unfortunate lockdown of the MAC facilities. In an effort to make the Platinum Partnership program an entirely positive experience, the Membership Committee and Board of Governors have approved the following changes to the plan. F All Members in the Platinum Partnership dues category will
remain in the category even if their Partner should resign or go on a leave from the Club. F This will remain in effect until such time as any Board of Governors could make changes to the Membership categories in the future. F To form a Platinum Partnership, any current Member of the Club must also be the new Members Proposing or Seconding Sponsor. F Now is the perfect time for any Member in the Diamond Club or À la Carte categories to recruit a Member and lock in their Platinum Partnership. MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Rob Timmermann CD: In a sentence or two, tell the MAC about yourself. RT: I’m a father to a wonderful 8 year-old boy, Paxton, husband to my beautiful wife, Danyal Timmermann, and a serial entrepreneur. I grew up in a small town in Illinois, moved to St. Louis over 20 years ago, and now reside in Creve Coeur with my family and our Boston Terrier, Hawk. CD: What are your favorite Club events? RT: Some of my favorite Club events are Boxing Night, Trunk-or-Treat and Breakfast with Santa. CD: Do you have any favorite memories at the Club? RT: Having my son see the Stanley Cup takes the cake! That was a super special moment. CD: How long have you been a Member of the Club? RT: It will be two years this January. CD: Why did you join the MAC? RT: I have always appreciated the sense of community the MAC brings to our area and I’m very into physical fitness, so it was a perfect fit for me and our family. CD: Tell us a bit about the Timmermann Group. Why are you passionate about your company? RT: It’s incredible feeling to create a brand and watch people embrace it, launch a website and see people use it, and

generate content that produces leads and sales for business owners and their employees. I have been able to experience first- hand what great branding, strategic marketing, and targeted lead generation can do for a company. Changing peoples live through lead generation is the thing that ignites my fire every day.
CD: Why should Members work with Timmerman Group? RT: Simply put, we help brands sell more of what they are selling, and we do that through different marketing channels such branding, websites design, Search Engine Optimization, Pay-Per-Click Advertising and Social Media Marketing. It is rare to be an expert in more than one of those areas but through hard work and a quest for excellence, my team at Timmermann Group can perform that under one company. CD: Tell us about your life outside of the Club and Timmermann Group. RT: I don’t just do marketing for other people’s businesses; I also do it for my own. One of those businesses is a national health testing company that allows people to order the exact health tests their doctor would prescribe, confidentially, without physically seeing a physician. My wife also owns, Boom Pilates, which keeps us busy as well. F
LETTER FROM THE CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER
s a supplement to my quarterly financial reports, below is a summary of where the Club stands financially through the first 11 months of our fiscal year, September through July. Our Member headcount in July was 2,319, compared to 2,292 last July. Factoring in the Member concessions, our year-to-date dues revenue was $585,000 less favorable than last year. For the 11 months, the Club generated $7,800,000 of operating revenue which was $1,400,000 less favorable than budget, mainly in Rooms and Food and Beverage at both Clubhouses. This is $217,000 less than last year’s revenue for the same period. On the positive side, Tennis and West Pro Shop revenues remain strong. As a result of these lower revenues, our operating departments collectively posted a yearto-date loss of $919,000, compared to last year’s loss of $836,000. On the other hand, we’ve experienced a positive variance of $270,000 in Repairs and Utilities compared to budget, $139,000 in Administrative and General expenses, and $116,000 in General Clubhouse expenses. At the bottom line, the Club has experienced positive operating cash flow of $2.9 million for the 11 months. This is $2.2 million better than budget and $1.9 million ahead of last fiscal year. This positive performance is largely due to the Employee Retention Tax Credit (ERTC). Without the ERTC,

the Club’s performance is just $24,000 less favorable than budget. Looking ahead through August, the end of the fiscal year, the Member headcount is expected to reach 2,352, an improvement of 98 Members over last August’s headcount of 2,254. Overnight room revenue and banquet revenue for August is projected to be very close to budget, while expenses should continue to trend under budget. Our employee headcount is inching closer to pre-pandemic levels with the increase in business, however, the current hiring environment is impacting our ability to attract qualified employees. We expect to end the fiscal year very close to budget at the bottom line, before factoring in the ERTC. This is quite an accomplishment given the uncertain circumstances we faced last summer while developing the budget. We are blessed to have so many loyal Members who value all this great Club has to offer! MHC Book Club To Discuss "A Wicked War" On Sept. 21 we will be discussing “A Wicked War: Polk, Clay, Lincoln, and the 1846 U.S. Invasion of Mexico” by Amy S. Greenberg. Prof. Greenberg will be the speaker at our Sept. 28 Military History Club meeting. Often forgotten and overlooked, the U.S.-Mexican War featured false starts, atrocities and daring back-channel negotiations as it divided the nation, paved the way for the Civil War a generation later, and launched the career of Abraham Lincoln. Greenberg’s skilled storytelling and rigorous scholarship bring this American war for empire to life with memorable characters, plotlines and legacies. This definitive history of the 1846 conflict paints an intimate portrait of the major players and their world. It is a story of Indian fights, Manifest Destiny, secret military maneuvers, gunshot wounds, and political spin. Join the MAC's Ballroom Dance Club This Month MAC Book Club to Discuss "Songs of America" On Thursday, Sept. 9, the MAC Book Club continues its series as Jim Gallen leads the discussion of “Songs of America” by John Meacham and Tim McGraw. From “The Star-Spangled Banner” to “Born in the U.S.A.,” Jon Meacham and Tim McGraw take readers on a moving and insightful journey through eras in American history and the songs and performers that inspired us. Meacham chronicles our history, exploring the stories behind the songs, and Tim McGraw reflects on them as an artist and performer. Their perspectives combine to create a unique view of the role music has played in uniting and shaping a nation. Beginning with the battle hymns of the revolution, and taking us through songs from the defining events of the Civil War, the fight for women’s suffrage, the two world wars, the Great Depression, the civil rights movement, the Vietnam War and into the 21st century, Meacham and McGraw explore the songs that defined generations, and the cultural and political climates that produced them. he much-anticipated MAC Youth Activities Room is finally near completion. The project began with the West Clubhouse fitness renovation, but became delayed with the advent of
the pandemic. The Youth Activities Room boasts six unique climbing walls with self belays, two Nintendo Switches on big screens, a foosball table and mini pingpong for kids ages 5-12.

CAUSING A RACQUET with Racquetball In April, a group of dedicated MAC racquetball players kicked off new organized play at the West Clubhouse. The group – led by Member organizers Steve Albart and Mark McClanahan with the help of tennis pro Dave Fuhrig – kicked off a new league with about 45 Members divided into three skill levels. “Our goal was to have people playing with matching skill sets, so no matter what your playing level is, from beginner to advanced, you can get a good workout in and enjoy the experience” Albart said. As a part of the Phase II project that was completed in early 2020, the racquetball section of the West Clubhouse received a substantial facelift. A dedicated racquetball lounge space is now available for Members, complete with tables, chairs and a TV. Players can watch each other play and have space to relax in between matches. “The dedicated racquetball space is incredible,” Albart said. “I'm super excited to have organized league play back at the MAC!” McClanahan noted that racquetball has a long tradition at
the MAC and St. Louis area, and the sport is accessible to all ages and skill levels. “Being over 50, this sport has greatly benefited my health, and I am excited to share my love of the sport with my fellow MAC Members,” McClanahan said. Junior Tennis Welcomes New Director The MAC is happy to welcome Conner Stevenson as our new Director of Junior Tennis. Stevenson grew up in Florida and played every sport he could find until he found tennis! Once that happened, he became instantly hooked. He carried his obsession to St. Louis as a senior in high school, and atteended Missouri Baptist University on a tennis scholarship. He has now been teaching 10 years and says there is "nothing else he would rather do." His most enjoyable part of teaching is "connecting with the kids, figuring out how each one learns, and then using that to inspire them towards improvement." Stevenson plans to build upon our junior program with a consistent pathway for 4-18 year olds; creating great players and allowing for all ages and skill levels to be encouraged by the game. This is consistent with his philosophy that even if tennis is not a child's favorite sport; by giving them enough of your energy, and by investing in their progress, any child, (or adult), can be inspired to love the game. In his words, "I am excited for this opportunity at the MAC. I hope to continue with the great strides they have already made, and add on everything I have to offer, so that we continue to be a prominent presence in the St. Louis tennis community." F

In the MAC's first tournament back, players were randomly drawn out of the hat, double elimination, each round first to five points, final first to three points! A few highlights: Early casualties: Carlos Farfan went MIA. Sources confirmed Max Rowe flipped a coin to decide between playing squash or sitting on the bench in softball league. Alex Ingham's training partner Kirill Abramov jumped into the quarters with a good mix of angles taking out handy tennis convert Reed Montgomery and later the craftsman Gary Clark. The group/quarter of death, Nistler, young gun Sameer Shafqat and newcomer Paul Simon, who got royally stitched drawing the two favorites! Nistler played tidy textbook squash taking no chances to march on to the next round. Atif Shafqat is in the best shape of his life—100% injury free. Trevor McDonagh put in a spirited performance in a high paced encounter. Shafqat found the targets and booked his spot in the next round. Merenda and Kazda was the first real tussle to go the distance. Both quick and move the ball around the court. Kazda pulled ahead only to miss hit his serve under and short and give Merenda a chance to pull back and sneak it 5-4. Nistler continued his cutthroat form, carving his way through to book a place in the final. The back draw, which feeds back through to the main draw final set up the classic battle between father and son in Atif versus Sameer Shafqat. The first two rallies were long, grinding rallies; Sameer absorbing and injecting pace taking the legs away from his dad, it looked to go the full distance, the pace took its toll and Sameer pulled through to make the final setting up a rematch against Randy Nistler, now first to three points! Nistler managed to keep a stranglehold on the youngster’s attacks from the get go, with a sprint finish to seal a three points to one victory to lift the first title of the season. Three shoeshines are available for the price of two at the Downtown Clubhouse. Members will pay for two shoeshines and receive their third shoeshine for free when they bring in three pairs of shoes to be shined (all three pairs must be brought in at the same time to receive the special). Shoeshines are available Downtown in the Athletic Department Monday-Friday from 5:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Members can also drop off their shoes in the Athletic Department anytime during operating hours, and they will get shined the next day that shoeshine is open. Spinning Toward Success During the month of July, Members of the Club were tasked with a special spin challenge. Each day these Members attended a spin class in the West Clubhouse's Cycle Studio, they were asked to track their miles after each class. By the end of the month, 18 Members had joined the challenge. Their total milage equaled 1,401.6 miles — the equivalent from riding from
St. Louis to Sedona, Arizona! The top three winners from this challenge were: F Damian Gerrard - 284.5 miles F Chuck Burrgraff - 234.8 F Bob Schenck - 138.9 Thank you to all who participated in this fun event! F
Members Participate in the (MAC) Olympics While the rest of the world was busy watching the Olympics, the MAC's fitness group, Don't Fret 2 Sweat was tasked with competing in their own version of the games. Members competed to hold the longest plank, fastest 2,000-meter on the rower, the most amount of push ups and the fastest 10-mile bike. The winners were as follows: F F F F

JACKSON MILLER (CENTER) FINISHED THIRD PLACE IN THE HOUSTON JUNIOR OLYMPICS ON AUG. 5.
Last month, the Cherry Diamond featured a story on Jackson Miller, the son of MAC Members Katie and Josh Miller, who recently participated in the National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships. In the USATF Junior Olympics in Jacksonville, which took place on July 27, Miller finished in ninth place out of 62 in the nation. His time in the 1,500-meter run was 4:50. He also participated in the AAU Junior Olympics in Houston on Aug. 5. He finished in third place out of 68 in the nation. He ran a personal best at 4:39 in the 1,500-meter race.F
What's On the Web? Though most people have heard about the MAC's new website and app, Members may not know what these new offerings mean for them. Many areas of the website may look familiar to Members, as we opted to keep the appearance and navigation largely the same to prevent confusion. The new branded app now has the functionality to allow Members to view menus, register for classes, childcare, camps and more, as well as view all your bookings in the same place. Remember the username and password you created for the website will be the same credentials used to log in to the app. As with all website launches, we will be working diligently to ensure there are no glitches or faulty areas of the site, but if you should encounter something that’s not functioning properly, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us at webmaster@mac-stl.org. We’re striving to create the best online experience for our Members, and we appreciate your patience as we make this transition! A NIGHT
Fit for a Princess The iconic Father-Daughter Banquet dates back to the early years of the MAC and has remained a favorite event since then. On Thursday, Aug. 12, fathers and grandfathers left their houses to escort their daughters and granddaughters to a fairytale evening at the annual Father-Daughter Banquet at the Downtown Clubhouse.
The magic night was filled with a cocktails and kiddie cocktails, photographs and balloon art while children’s movies played in the Art Lounge. Dinner and dancing rounded out an enchanting night.F

Lisa Baron is Founder and Executive Director of Memory Care Home Solutions (MCHS), a non-profit organization with a mission of extending and improving quality time at home for people with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias and their family caregivers. Baron transformed her own family’s struggle with Alzheimer’s disease into 17 years of compassionate dedication to serving this population in our region. She has served on the Missouri State Alzheimer’s Task Force, as a representative on Carnahan’s Council on Aging, and was recognized as a national finalist for the Robert Wood Johnson Community Health Leader Award. FRANCIS LEVINE Dr. Frances Levine became the President and CEO of the Missouri Historical Society in the spring of 2014. She is the author, co-editor and/or contributor to several awardwinning books including Frontier Battles and Massacres: Historical and Archaeological Perspectives and Doña Teresa Confronts the Spanish Inquisition: A Seventeenth-Century New Mexican Drama. She is married to historian and historic preservation consultant Thomas Merlan of Santa Fe. They have two children – Stephen and Anna. LEILANI CARVER-MADALON Dr. Leilani Carver-Madalon is a Leadership Expert, Keynote Speaker and Professor who seeks to empower women. Leilani is Director of Communication and Director of Graduate Strategic Communication and Leadership at Maryville University. Her writing and expertise have been featured in Forbes, Huffington Post, The Hill, PR News, and other prestigious outlets. Additionally, she delivered a TEDx Women’s Talk on tactics to increase power. Dr. Carver-Madalon volunteers with nonprofits that champion women and girls from St. Louis to Pakistan. She interviews successful women and is on sabbatical this spring to write a book on women’s leadership strategies and tactics. VANESSA OKWURAIWE Edward Jones Principal Vanessa Okwuraiwe leads from the global mindset of having lived in Nigeria, the U.K. and the U.S. In her 20 years leading talent acquisition, training, development and marketing functions, she has used her platform as a business 30 F CHERRY DIAMOND
leader who is also a woman and person of color to advocate for the importance of diverse perspectives and support an environment where everyone has a voice. A firm believer in education as a force for individual and economic development, she is board president of the St. Louis Community College Foundation and spokesperson for the firm’s national Financial Resilience campaign. PAM PRICE Pam is the Therapeutic Foster Parent for six homeless boys and girls from the ages of six to 18 at the Jennings Hope House. She has been a foster parent for 25 years and has adopted five children. Her vision is to heal their broken heart from being separated from their families, help them become successful at what they choose and be good people. She also sits on the boards for Systems of Cars, Missouri Behavior Health and Fostering Court Improvement. HON. ROBIN RANSOM Honorable Robin Ransom was the first African American female judge elected to the 22nd judicial circuit (City of St. Louis), and unanimously elected presiding judge of that circuit in 2018. She is the first African American female to be appointed to the Supreme Court of Missouri. Judge Ransom has participated in career days and been a guest speaker for local schools to help the students understand the court system and juvenile system. LINDSEY HERZOG SHIPLEY, RISING STAR Lindsey Herzog is the award-winning vice president of Weber Shandwick in St. Louis with 10-plus years of experience managing consumer-focused communications efforts for a variety of clients. She has also handled corporate communications, issues management and executive visibility efforts for several clients, helping to secure speaking opportunities on key stages at Cannes and garnering coverage with top-tier media, including the Wall Street Journal, Fortune and more. Herzog-Shipley was named to Business Insider’s “Rising Stars in Public Relations” list in 2020 and was recognized as one of PRWeek’s Hall of Femme’s “Women to Watch” in 2019. F

JOIN THE MAC Art Society
The MAC’s Art Society is a new interest group of Members committed to discovering, preserving and promoting the Club’s beloved collection of paintings, prints and sculptures installed across both Clubhouses; but their mission is certainly not anything new. In fact, in 1963, Member Bruce Pates, the last surviving member of the original Art Committee at the MAC, helped to create the Club’s first publication of the art collection in the Cherry Diamond. This celebrated every artwork in the collection at the time with an illustration, short description and further comments by Bruce Pates. Since that time, the art collection has more than doubled, and it is still common to see Members and guests alike casually but carefully looking at and discussing paintings hanging in the Art Lounge and throughout the Downtown Clubhouse. No longer is it possible to get a first-hand account of the formation of the art collection from those instrumental Members, but the vast collection gives people some indication of just how intentional their goal of collecting truly was. How then did the Missouri Athletic Club find itself committing its own funds and those solicited from its membership to the buying of pictures to form an art collection? For the founders of the MAC collection, they did not wish to simply “decorate” the club walls with posters and reproductions, but they had as a goal the formation of a real collection. Their first acquisition came about in 1918, when there were just a few men sitting around the Wall Street Table who felt the Club was long overdue for some

real art. Some of the men at the table put together the funds to purchase "Windswept Meramec River" for the Club from artist Tom Barnett, a local architect who had been involved with the rebuilding of the Downtown Clubhouse following the 1914 fire. This treasured painting still hangs in the Downtown Clubhouse lobby today. By 1940 the Art Committee formally came into being, and nearly 20 works of art entered the collection that first decade. This committee was the primary force behind the raising of interest in, money for, and appreciation of, art at the MAC. As the new Art Society carries forward this torch, the Society will proudly share these stories and celebrate the long efforts of the Members who came before who felt that “A thing of beauty is a joy forever…” and had the forethought to fill the walls with a real art collection, and not just a few paintings to tart-up the place. Almost Paradise with the Associates The West Clubhouse pool deck was transformed into a Hawaiian paradise on Saturday, July 24 as the Associates hosted a luau pool party for the membership. Members were decked out in their “island-best” while they enjoyed a tropical paradise and MAC camaraderie.
