Dean Eggerding Elected Next President of the MAC

Dean Eggerding President

The MAC’s 15-member Board of Governors met recently and elected Dean Eggerding as the 99th president of the Club, as well as naming the four other officers. Eggerding is President of the employee benefits division at USI Midwest. A second-generation member, he joined the Club in 2001 and most recently served as co-chair of the Membership Committee. He is active in many areas of the Club, and he and his wife, Erica, have three children. Eggerding and the rest of the officers will begin a one-year term of service in May.

Last Call for Board Nominations If you are interested in running in the 2014 election for the MAC Board of Governors, the deadline to submit letters of intent is Thursday, March 3. All nomination packets, complete with a photo and biography, are due by Monday, March 10, to Gena Willis at gwillis@ mac-stl.org. After receiving all applications, the MAC Nominating Committee will narrow the field of candidates down to 10, who will appear on the ballot for the 2014 Club election. These candidates will be announced on April 1, and the five newly elected governors will be announced at 8 p.m. on Thursday, May 1. Running for the Board is a great way to give back to the Club, connect with fellow members, develop a deep camaraderie with fellow governors and enrich your leadership and membership experience. Whether you run for the Board or not, you can still experience all the excitement of election time at the Club. Make plans now to join us for the Election Rooftop Happy Hour on Thursday, April 24, from 5-9 p.m., and for Election Day at the Downtown Clubhouse on May 1.

President’s Column

President’s Column President John Bugh

First off, I’d like to congratulate Dean Eggerding on being elected as the 99th president of the Missouri Athletic Club. As a second-generation member (whose father also served as president), Dean understands the traditions and the legacy of the Club. Having worked with him on the board over the past couple of years, I also think he brings a fresh perspective that will help the MAC and keep it moving on the right path. I’m excited to see what he is able to accomplish when he assumes this position in May, along with the other officers elected to serve. It had been a number of years since the MAC last hosted the FatherSon Banquet, but thanks to the initiative of Gov. Chris Hyams and several other folks, this tradition was revived with more than 200 turning out for a special evening at the Club. I know my son and I had a great time, and I’m glad to see this event return. While the Club has hosted Valentine’s Day events in the past, we stepped it up a notch this year to honor the 250th anniversary of the city of St. Louis. Thank you to the MAC PAC committee who helped to make this a success and everyone who came out to celebrate. The event was just the start, however, as the MAC was selected as one of the

“Cakeway to the West” locations by STL250. This means our Club will be one of 250 locations throughout the St. Louis region to have a 4-foot fiberglass cake structure on display outside our Downtown Clubhouse. Each cake is activated through a mobile app that will guide users to our location, share information about the MAC and enter users into a prize drawing. It’s a truly unique way to showcase our Club as part of this citywide celebration.

One of the many strengths of the MAC is the wide variety of events we offer.

The longstanding traditions of Good Fellowship Day and the Annual Boxing Championships were also big hits in February. I’m continually amazed at the turnout and participation at our events by our members. I cannot thank each of you enough. In early March, we’ll honor the St. Louis Fire Department for their heroic efforts during the MAC fire of 1914. Then, of course, it will be on to holiday celebrations, such as the St. Patrick’s Day Parade and Easter Brunch. One of the many strengths

of the MAC is the wide variety of events we have to offer – there truly is something for everyone. Attending many of these events has been one of the highlights of my term as president. Another highlight of my term has been the opportunity to go behind the scenes and see some of the work being done day in and day out at the Club. Last month, I attended the annual Service Awards Dinner, recognizing our quarterly Distinguished Employees and those staff members celebrating key anniversaries. In this day and age, having employees who have dedicated 10, 15, 20 and even 30 years of their career to one organization is an amazing accomplishment. This experience and commitment on behalf of our staff is one thing that helps set the MAC apart from other organizations and ensures it remains a Platinum Club. The Club Within the Club (CWC) in the spotlight this month is the MAC Golf Club. Warmer temperatures can’t be too far off, and for golf-lovers like myself, access to four unique courses is a great benefit of membership in the MAC. The Golf Club welcomes golfers of all abilities; the only requirement is a love of the game and a desire to play with fellow members. For more information on the Golf Club and upcoming events, see pages 16-17 of this issue, visit the MAC website (Social > CWCs > Golf Club) or contact Tim Powers at 314-9228958. I will see you around the Club (or on the links)! John Bugh President

General Manager

From the General Manager’s Desk Wally Smith

In early February, I had the opportunity to attend the Club Managers Association of America World Conference and Club Business Expo, a weeklong educational and networking conference for private club managers and industry experts. The ability to step away from day-today business and connect with other industry professionals and share ideas is invaluable, and I always find myself coming back to the MAC with a renewed passion for moving our Club forward (and drive the staff nuts with all the new ideas). While these meetings are always a good opportunity to see what others in the club industry are doing, at the end of the day, it’s always interesting to see how much we have in common and to realize how well we do so many things. We all face similar challenges – striving to create overall club relevance in a competitive environment where there are more choices than ever before, to better communicate with our members, to invest in our people and facility improvements, to attract and empower our next generation of club leaders. That last one has never been an issue for the MAC; our longstanding tradition and engaged membership have resulted in great classes of leaders eager and willing to serve and share their areas of expertise. Now that we have an active planning and implementation system in place, the job becomes focused on “how the Club could be” rather than focusing on the day-to-day issues that our staff handles. And, as we slide into our election process, our Board of Governors has elected a tremendous group of officers for next year, led by our incoming president Dean Eggerding. As your staff, we 8

MARCH 2014

absolutely look forward to working with each of our Governors and Officers along with our new class once elected. Progress continues on our planned capital improvements at both the Downtown and West Clubhouses. If you’ve attended a recent event in the Missouri Room, such as the FatherSon Banquet, Hermann Trophy Banquet or Jack Buck Sports Awards, you likely noticed a much improved audiovisual experience. This was the result of the new state-of-theart speaker and retractable video screen systems. With the number of events the Club hosts annually, this investment allows the MAC to provide the exceptional quality that you and your guests expect without having to rent costly equipment from outside vendors, all while maintaining the architectural integrity of this historic ballroom. Next time you’re at an event, listen for the difference, and remember to suggest the MAC for business, banquet, awards and wedding type events when the opportunity presents itself. Also, be sure to visit Floors 7-10 where you will see the transformation taking place as we overhaul our hotel common areas. Most of the refinishing and painting has been completed, the new fixtures have been hung and the crew is in the process of updating the flooring with carpet scheduled to begin the last week in February. We plan to put the finishing touches on these floors by mid-March just in time for the kickoff to our baseball season. At West, we are finishing up our planning work for the Squash and Tennis courts with both scheduled for March and May, respectively. And by the time the pool opens this summer, we’ll have the grassy area fenced in making it a

perfect place for kids to play safely and for adult games taking place just for the fun of it. I could not be more excited to share these improvements when complete and hope you’ll come by very soon to check everything out. If it’s been a while since you referred a guest to our overnight rooms, or stayed yourself, it’s definitely time to give the MAC a try. And please, consciously make it a point to come see us just one more time this month for lunch or dinner. That impact is dramatic on our business, and we thank you for all your support. A St. Louis Love Affair The Missouri Ballroom became the setting for a once in a lifetime party on Valentine’s Day, as nearly 300 MAC members and guests toasted the 250th anniversary of the city of St Louis. After enjoying cocktails and hors d’oeuvres in the Art Lounge, guests dined from food stations ranging from a seafood and raw bar to pasta station to roast tenderloin. The meal was capped off with a delicious dessert spread and birthday cake. Special guests for the evening included 2013 Miss Missouri Shelby Ringdahl, who led the crowd in a chorus of “Meet Me in St. Louis.” After raising a glass for the city, party-goers danced the night away to the sounds of The Hulapoppers. Two lucky attendees were the winners of a beautiful gold necklace from Lordo’s Diamonds and a ranch mink cape from The Fur & Leather Centre. A special thanks to the MAC PAC for their efforts in coordinating this special event.

MORE WINS

(And a Loss)

FOR THE MAC SQUASH PROGRAM

The MAC is now home to two State Champs in Singles Squash. In fact, the Club had four members competing in the recent State Titles, demonstrating once again the strength of the program. In the end, Jason Growe defeated Mark Helmsing 3/0 and Nick Bahn defeated Tim Engelmeyer 3/1 to become the State Champs. An MAC junior squash team, consisting of up-and-coming players ages 9 to 14, had a great time playing a scrimmage match against the MICDS C team and won 16-4. Finally, the MAC squash program suffered a tremendous loss with the passing of Gary Parker, who died in a skiing accident. He will be sorely missed as a mentor, dear friend and fierce competitor. Thank you to all who came out to watch and support the 1st Annual St. Louis Open Women’s Pro Doubles Squash Tournament. Stay tuned on Facebook and in next month’s issue for photos and more details from the event.

(l to r) Allison James, Jack Holekamp, Henry Byrne and Zach Helmsing were four of the nine participants in a recent scrimmage against MICDS.

COACHES CORNER By Scott Stutz, MAC Tennis Pro

It has been a fantastic season so far for the MAC Ladies Interclub teams. Currently, both A and B teams hold strong records in their respective divisions. The MAC has historically been home to many of the top teams in St. Louis. Team camaraderie is at an all-time high, as well as an outpouring of participants at our practices. MAC players have described the clinics as being informative, high energy, practical and most of all FUN! There are many ways to get an idea or vision across to an individual or team, and each of us interprets information differently. In a recent clinic, we were discussing “how to play against a softball/lob ball hitter” in doubles. So, I went to the chalkboard. Through my illustrations, the team was able to clearly visualize how they should be moving on the court, what to expect from the opponent and what type of shot they should hit relative to their court positioning. It’s amazing what a little bit of artwork does! For more information on MAC Tennis programs, visit the website. (Athletics > Tennis)

VALPARAISO COACH MAKES STOP AT MAC From MAC Past President Mike Hackett

After Valparaiso University Director of Athletics Mark LaBarbera announced Dave Cecchini as the 17th head football coach in the school’s history, the MAC was the first stop on their nationwide tour. “We made up a list of all the attributes that would be important for our next head coach, and Dave met every one of them,” LaBarbera said. “Everyone we’ve talked to about Dave indicated that he was not only an outstanding football coach but also an outstanding leader of young men.” Cecchini most recently served as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach at Lehigh University for four seasons. It was his second stint with the Mountain Hawks. Cecchini also worked in the same capacity at The Citadel and Harvard, having coached Tennessee Titans quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick and Arizona Cardinals receiver Andre Roberts.

A Great Workout, No Sweat! Due to its low-impact nature, water aerobics has long been recognized as an ideal workout for those with arthritis, back problems, knee conditions or foot and leg injuries. But it’s also a great workout for those at all fitness levels, allowing you to burn calories and build strength, as water provides 12 times the resistance of air. Led by MAC instructor Rob Scheer, participants use hand paddles, foam noodles and bands to further increase the resistance and improve conditioning. This is a good class for building friendships, as many in the group regularly get coffee and breakfast together after class. Give it a try! She is also certified in Reiki I and II. “I have always known I wanted to be a massage therapist – it’s one of the greatest ways to help people there is,” Lauren says. Expanded Hours MAC Massage Therapist Kelly McNally has increased her hours to allow members more access and availability to the West Clubhouse massage department. She will be available now Monday through Thursday and alternating Fridays. Kelly has 12 years of massage experience and is excited to have the opportunity to work with more members to provide tension relief, muscle recovery and relaxation. To book a massage with Lauren or Kelly, or any of the West therapists, contact the Fitness Desk at 314-539-4433. For Downtown, make an appointment by contacting Teah (314-539-4431), Jerrad (314-539-4491) or Stephanie (314-539-4481). Don’t forget to take advantage of the New Client special; all first-time massage appointments receive a one-hour session at the half-hour rate of $39.50.

Standings after the 2nd Weigh-In

At press time, contestants had just reached the midway point in the annual Biggest Loser weight loss competition. This year, eight members are competing in the program, working out regularly and participating in health assessments, nutrition counseling and regular weigh-ins. The winner of the contest will be the person who loses the most percentage of body weight; check out the graph to see the standings as of the Feb. 17 weigh-in. But everyone is a winner in this competition, as members shed inches and improve their health, fitness and confidence. The contest will wrap up on March 21, and final results will be published in the May issue of the Cherry Diamond.

Want More Fitness Inspiration? If you missed the program during its regular airtime, you can watch all episodes of The JJK Effect online at www.youtube.com/SaintLouisTV. Featuring local area celebs, several episodes of this weight loss competition were filmed at the Missouri Athletic Club and offer fitness tips and advice from MAC trainers and pros. Like Father, Like Son While it had been a few years since the Father-Son Banquet was last held at the Club, MAC members were excited for its return, with more than 200 turning out for the event on Jan. 30. Fathers (and grandfathers) had the opportunity to show off the Downtown Clubhouse to their boys, as well as enjoying games and activities in the Athletic Department. The evening included a delicious dinner, sundae bar and entertainment. Cardinals player and 2012 Sports Personality of the Year Matt Holliday graciously served as the keynote speaker for the evening and answered a number of questions from boys in the audience. Also, special thanks to sponsor CK Power, who contributed Cardinals hats for each of the sons.

Salutes the St. Louis Fire Department Join us this month as the MAC marks the 100th anniversary of the 1914 fire, which destroyed the original Clubhouse. Most importantly, the Club will honor the St. Louis Fire Department for their efforts on that day and their continued support in the years since. All MAC members and St. Louisans are invited to the luncheon Downtown on March 7. History buffs won’t want to miss the exhibits beforehand, which will include photos and accounts from the 1914 fire, as well as displays of firefighting equipment and gear from the last century.

The program will begin with a presentation of the colors from the St. Louis Fire Department Honor Guard. Tim O’Neil, writer for the St. Louis PostDispatch, will provide a recap of the historic events, and St. Louis Fire Chief Dennis Jenkerson will offer his remarks. While it’s recognized as the deadliest fire in St. Louis history, with 37 lives lost, some good did come out of the MAC fire. The tragedy spurred St. Louis officials to investigate the overall safety of public buildings and hotels, resulting in an improved and more enforceable building code to increase public safety.

Meanwhile, the first meeting to rebuild the MAC was held just a few short weeks after the fire and immediately began efforts to raise the necessary funds. The cornerstone of the current building was laid on June 9, 1915, and less than a year later, the new MAC Downtown Clubhouse opened on March 1, 1916.

Next month, the Missouri Athletic Club will honor the 2014 Women of Distinction at a special luncheon. Nominations are now closed, and thank you to everyone who took the time to submit a nomination. The finalists will be announced in the coming weeks. Make plans to join us on April 11 to help us honor these influential business, community and civic leaders. This year’s event will be emceed by Randi Naughton, KTVI news anchor and KTRS Radio talk show host. The event will also feature keynote speaker Blanche Touhill, Ph.D., former chancellor of the University of Missouri St. Louis. A St. Louis native, Touhill was the first woman to successfully go through the tenure process at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. In her 11 years as chancellor, she put UMSL on the map, adding 30 academic programs, 138 acres of land, 17 new buildings and the first student housing. She helped raise $96.1 million in private gifts and $180 million in grants and contracts, and built a new student center and performing arts center. For her efforts at the university and within the community, she was the first woman to be named St. Louis “Citizen of the Year” in 1997. MAC Champion

MAC Champions are those members who go above and beyond to fill the three Buckets (Membership, Rooms and Catering) and help the MAC prosper.

There are people who experience the world and then there are people who observe those who experience it. We must LIVE something and share it with people! Living something requires constant challenge. Art is not Zack Smithey’s job or something he does; it’s his way of life, his way of sight, his way of action. It is what gives him purpose and meaning. Art is the language an artist uses to communicate what, how, and why they see, feel and experience. Like a championship ring to an athlete, art tells the story of those who live it. Those who own a Zack Smithey piece have not invested in art, but in a story that will forever become part of their own legacy communicating who they are and what they represent. These were once the stories told by our ancestors and passed from generation to generation by word of mouth. These are the values that seem to have been lost in our world of instant gratification. Collectors don’t just buy a Zack Smithey because of his unique style and attention to detail. They identify with the values, integrity, and stories behind his life’s work. To find out more about the Artist of the Month Zack Smithey, contact someone who knows him personally at KevinReder2@gmail.com or visit www.zacksmithey.com. Smithey’s work will be on display at the Downtown Clubhouse throughout March.

What Guests Are Saying … The MAC Is Coming Back “The Clubhouse is under extensive renovation in the guest room areas, which is very good. My room had new bathroom fixtures and tile, was spacious and neat. The balance of the clubhouse is looking pretty good, including the honorable art collection. The three Cortes Paris paintings are standouts, along with the clever Cortes-style rendering of the clubhouse street scene. Definitely eat in the dining room – top notch for a city club. If you are a clubber, this is worth a stay. Still a worthy destination if you are not, but don’t expect a bland Marriott-style experience.” – Chad from Chicago, posted on TripAdvisor Make your room reservations for upcoming events, including NCAA Men’s Basketball, Easter Brunch and Cardinals games, by calling 314-231-7220. Charitable Society for Children Presents 2013 Checks

MAC members and guests had the chance to relive the Rat Pack era, while supporting some great causes, during a recent event hosted by the Charitable Society for Children and the Dance Club. During 2013, CSC raised more than $33,000 for the three selected charities: Boys Hope Girls Hope, Voices for Children and College Bound. Checks were presented to each charity in January, during an evening of dining and dancing to the sounds of the Dean Christopher Band. Representatives from the 2014 selected charities – Assistance League of St. Louis, Kids in the Middle and Missouri KIDS – were also on hand. Thank you to all the MAC members and employees who continue to support the CSC and these charities through contributions. Assistance League of St. Louis

Caring and Commitment in Action While many charitable organizations focus on a specific cause or program, the Assistance League® of St. Louis is unique in that it focuses on finding and meeting needs, wherever they may be in the community. Over the past 25 years, this has led to the development of programs such as: • Operation School Bell®: Last year, the organization provided new uniforms for more than 3,000 elementary school children. In November 2013, ALSL celebrated dressing 50,000 children. • Steps to Success: Last year, volunteers visited 24 elementary schools to properly fit and provide shoes and socks to more than 2,400 children. • Project ROSE: Since 2001, members have delivered gift bags, containing personal care items, clothing and household items, to women in area shelters. • Operation HUG: Starting in 1988, ALSL was one of the first nonprofit organizations to distribute teddy bears to emergency personnel and social agencies for those facing traumatic events. The League now serves 24 agencies in the St. Louis community. • My Own Fun Stuff: Last year, the League provided nearly 20,000 activity kits to entertain children and adults in various hospital settings. The organization also frequently partners with other agencies to address community challenges and one-time needs. Operation School Bell is the ALSL’s largest program, and as with many of their programs, is about more than just fulfilling a need. A new school uniform helps to instill a sense of pride,

and each child receives the attention of a caring volunteer who helps find the perfect fit. ALSL is also unique in that it is completely volunteer-run with no paid staff. As a result, all funds raised stay in the St. Louis community and are used directly towards programs. Last year, 368 member volunteers contributed more than 51,000 hours. “Member volunteers are our lifeblood,” says Suzanne Pratl, vice president of communications for ALSL. “Our volunteers come from all ages and backgrounds, and membership is open to all who believe, as we do, that a giving heart and simple compassionate acts can make a world of difference.” To assist with fundraising, ALSL operates a resale shop called Fantastic Finds, located at 12778 Olive Blvd. in Creve Coeur. Staffed and managed by Assistance League volunteers, the shop accepts donations of gently used clothing, furniture, household items, toys, books and home décor. For more information on donations, contact the shop directly at 314-579-9500. Visit http://alstl.org to learn more about the organization, and check out the box below for upcoming events. Assistance League of St. Louis is one of the MAC Charitable Society for Children’s three selected charities for 2014. You can provide your support through a one-time or monthly donation; download a form from the MAC website at www. mac-stl.org (Social > CWCs > Charitable Society for Children).

FYC Takes a Trip Back The Forever Young Club kicked off its 2014 “Adventure West” dining season with a Roaring Twenties dinner in January at the West Clubhouse. MAC employees were decked out in 1920s fedora hats, and vintage attire was seen on many of the guests. Ladies wore glamorous sequined and fringed outfits topped with plumed headbands.

More than 60 diners enjoyed a 1920’s Waldorf Astoria Hotel menu superbly prepared by Chef Grant Higgs and his talented staff. An evening of great music by Bill Row Entertainment followed, featuring the Charleston and other lively dance tunes. After so much glamour, maybe the next quarterly event will feature the Wild West!
