PRESIDENT’S COLUMN

»

After what seemed to be a long winter, spring is here, which means warmer weather and the excitement that comes with outdoor activities and some great upcoming events at the Missouri Athletic Club. I encourage all members to take advantage of a wide array of available opportunities. With so much excitement planned for the upcoming weeks, I’m expecting to see a lot of red, and by that I mean MAC red and St. Louis Cardinal red. The weekend of April 17 – 19 the Club will be hopping with not only MAC members gathering pre and post game for the Cardinals first home weekend series but also with members of private clubs from all over the country for the annual NACAD basketball tournament. This is a premier event and a great time to show off the Club and support our basketball program. Don’t miss the excitement and come out to support our teams in red. The warm weather these past few weeks has really made me look forward to the summer months, which means fun times spent at the pool with the kids. If you haven’t already, remember to register the children for the Penguins Swim and Dive team this month at the West Clubhouse on April 11 or 22. In addition to the Swim and Dive team, don’t forget all of the great summer camp offerings the MAC offers. Camp MAC offers kids the opportunity to learn proper skills and techniques in tennis, racquetball, squash, and a variety of other sports and games. Specialty camps are also available that concentrate on a specific sport. If you’re making plans for your kids for this summer, register now for Camp MAC on the website. Spring also marks the official beginning of the golf season. The MAC Golf Club once again has some great events planned so make sure you come by the Golf Season Kickoff event on April 24 to learn more. In addition to hearing about the upcoming events, open enrollment will launch for our ClubCorp program. ClubCorp offers numerous benefits to our members including two complimentary

green fees at more than 185 prestigious golf and country clubs each month, 30 days advance tee time availability, dining, athletic, and discount opportunities, and access to more than 300 affiliate clubs around the country. If you’re planning travel this summer or throughout the next year, this program is definitely worth reviewing. Sign up during the open enrollment period, which lasts 60 days after the launch, and waive the $5,000 initiation fee. In April, we’ll announce the candidates for our 2015 Board of Governors class. My time on the Board has been an awesome experience, and I know this next class of leaders will bring a great set of talents to our Club. The nominating committee has been working hard to put together a great group to run for the Board of Governors, and I am excited to hear and learn more about the next group of potential candidates. Another group of leaders that will be recognized this month are our Women of Distinction. At the luncheon held on Friday, April 10, six women will be honored for their achievements and contributions to the St. Louis community. Representative Ann Wagner will be our keynote speaker and 101 ESPN’s Michelle Smallmon will emcee the event. Plan to celebrate Easter with your family at the MAC. The annual Easter Egg Hunt will be held at the West Clubhouse on Saturday, April 4. Hunts will be divided by age group so it’s truly fun for kids of all ages. The next day, Easter brunch will be served at both clubhouses, and a petting zoo and appearance by the Easter Bunny will be part of the brunch at the Downtown Clubhouse. On the financial side, the Club continues to perform very well this fiscal year. Please see page 7 for John Salter’s midyear report. I want to take this opportunity to thank John Salter for his commitment these past two years as head of the Finance Committee. His leadership and passion on this committee and his time on the Board have been great assets for the MAC and its membership. Obviously, there are some awesome things going on at the MAC, and I look forward to sharing further information next month on a future project we are working on to improve the membership experience for all of us! Thanks to all my fellow members on making this such a great place. See you around the Club.

Missouri Athletic Club Bylaws Executive Summary Thank you to those who have served on our Bylaws Committee over the years and to our many members and subgroups who have been active in aligning our governing documents.

At the March meeting of the Missouri Athletic Club Board of Governors, a restatement of the Club’s bylaws was unanimously approved. Over the past 111 years, the MAC’s bylaws have been amended hundreds of times. During that time, many of these amendments were added to address then-current issues. Despite the best efforts of each Board to conform each amendment to the other bylaws, the document has become cumbersome and self-contradictory in many ways. Over the past three years, the Bylaws and Ethics Committee, with assistance from certain attorneys who are members of the Club, has engaged in a comprehensive review of the bylaws with the goals of (i) correcting the various inconsistencies and errors in the document, including punctuation, misspellings and incorrect cross-references, and (ii) making the bylaws consistent with current Club operations. In conjunction with the review of the bylaws, the Bylaws and Ethics Committee has established, and the Board has approved, a Club Policy Manual for the purposes of (i) consolidating and updating all of the various Club policy documents that have been created over the years, and (ii) addressing certain policies that previously resided in the bylaws, such as certain of the annual election oversight policies. There will be a discussion of this restatement at the Annual Business Meeting May 14, and the membership will receive ballots to ratify by June 1. Due to the size of these documents, they may be read and/or downloaded at www.mac-stl. org/Member-Central/Bylaws. Alternately, copies may be obtained at the front desk at the Downtown Clubhouse or at the manager’s office at the West Clubhouse. With two exceptions (Committee Structure, paragraph B below, and Honorary Members, paragraph E below) the restated bylaws contain very few substantive changes to the existing bylaws. The Board believes that the restated bylaws are a more efficient and effective governance tool that accurately reflects how the MAC conducts its business on a day-to-day basis. It is important to note that with the exception of the change to the Honorary Membership provision of the bylaws, which 6 F Cherry Diamond F APRIL 2015

is explained below, this restatement does not change or affect the amendments to the bylaws, which were adopted in May of 2013. Pursuant to Sections 3.11a and 3.13 of the restatement, no club members can be given an Honorary Membership, and all current and future Past Presidents and Governors shall continue to pay full dues. Although the Board encourages all members to carefully review the proposed restatement of the bylaws, the Board has identified the following six major components of the proposed restatement. A. Approximately 85% of the individual changes can be categorized as “cleanup.” They include, but are not limited to, addressing inconsistencies in language and defined terms, and correcting inaccurate cross-references and misspellings. B. All Committees with the exception of Membership, Finance, Planning, and Bylaws and Ethics (which is being re-named Governance) are removed and are substantially transferred to the Club Policy Manual. For legal reasons, the Audit Committee will also remain within the bylaws. The Committees moved to the Club Policy Manual (which include the Athletics, Club Life, and House Committees) will be restructured as “sub-committees,” and each will report to either Membership, Finance, Planning or Governance. This Amendment effectively creates vertical reporting of committee work within the scope of those four main Committees. The Board of Governors has the ability to create or eliminate sub-committees and task forces as needed. Under the Bylaws, only voting members of the Club are permitted to serve on committees, but there are fewer restrictions on personnel who can serve on sub-committees and task forces. The Board believes that restructuring the committee system in this manner will benefit the Club by allowing a broader constituency, including spouses of members, to serve the Club. C. Section 4.5 of the current bylaws, which gives the Finance Committee authority to establish limitations on cashing of checks for members, is moved to the Club Policy Manual (Sec 3F). The Board considers the establishment of check cashing limits a staff issue, not a governance issue. D. Section 10.4(a) of the current

bylaws, which provides that the Club’s CFO will report to the Finance Committee and the General Manager, is eliminated. In the Board’s view, requiring a staff employee to report to both the General Manager and the Finance Committee creates unnecessary ambiguity. By eliminating this provision, the bylaws are clear that pursuant to Section 9.6 (current bylaws; 10.6 restated bylaws), the CFO reports directly to the General Manager. E. Section 2.11 of the current bylaws addresses the Honorary Membership category and provides that an Honorary Membership may only be granted for a non-renewable twelve (12) month period. The Honorary Membership provision now appears as Section 3.11 of the restated bylaws, and it has been modified to allow annual renewals of Honorary Memberships upon review and approval of the Board. It has been a long-standing Club tradition to provide Honorary Memberships to certain prominent public officials, such as the Governor, the Mayor of St. Louis, the County Executive, the chiefs of the St. Louis Police and Fire Departments, and to other community leaders and athletes. In the Board’s view, the Club’s ongoing association with such persons is a substantial benefit to the Club’s reputation and role in the community. The Board recognizes, however, that Honorary Memberships should be granted with discretion and reviewed on an annual basis. As noted above, Club members will still not be permitted to receive Honorary Memberships. F. Section 12.2 of the current bylaws, which requires bylaw amendments to be submitted by mail to the entire voting membership, has been modified to accommodate large amendments by permitting the Board to make the documents available in digital form, by pick-up at either clubhouse, or mailed upon request. It is anticipated that some amendments could be too large and cost-prohibitive to mail en masse. Questions can be addressed to the Chairman of the Governance Committee, and members of the Board of Governors and the Governance Committee will be available for discussion at the Annual Business meeting on May 14.

Well begun... And now, half-done February marks the halfway point in the Missouri Athletic Club’s fiscal year. The Finance Committee is pleased to report that the six-month numbers show positive results, both when compared with our budget and when compared with last year’s results. In the first six months of our fiscal year, the Club generated net income of $319,896. This profit amount was $241,478 more than budget and $378,398 more than last year. Profitable operations gave us positive cash flow of $931,363, which was $241,503 more than budget and $380,301 more than last year. The gains against budget are even more impressive knowing that management set itself an aggressive budget for the year. Reaching its goals require significant improvement in performance from virtually every department. Through six months, results show outstanding performance across a broad range of areas. The Club has been fortunate to increase membership by 55 people since the halfway point of 2014. Revenues from dues and initiation fees are up by nearly 4.5% since then. That revenue is less than 0.4% under our budget, and we are still within striking range as the year continues. Comparing these results to the several years in a row with steep declines shows the effectiveness of the efforts of the Membership Committee and the Membership staff. Food and Beverage Departments, both Downtown and at the West Clubhouse, have been the star performers so far. Positive operating

income of $315,307 from these departments was $126,992 more than budget and $154,129 more than last year. Increase in revenue resulted from added banquet sales; the income improvement comes from a combination of cost containment and profits generated from member purchases. A year ago, I asked our members to add just one more meal a month. I think you’ve done that. Thank you for growing this critical bucket! The hotel continues to generate both sales and profits. Our continuing investment in modernizing and also eventually bringing more rooms online will continue that trend. Despite taking several hotel rooms down to allow for renovations, the Club generated $83,694 in operating income from $463,387 in sales. The Club has hosted 4,514 room nights in our hotel during these six months. While the overall occupancy rate is still below desired levels, it is increasing. The efforts of our reservations staff are making our rooms better known, reasonable pricing brings in guests and the efforts of our members make our guests feel welcome and bring them back. Our rooms bucket is growing and yielding profits! Many other departments have made significant contributions to our results. For example, tennis, led by our outstanding youth tennis programs, yielded operating income of $69,495 more than budget, and the downtown garage is $39,102 ahead of budget. Management, staff, the Board and membership have all given their best efforts. Results show everyone is paying attention. An improving economy, growing membership and hard work are combining to provide positive results. But, these results will only last as long as we continue our vigilance.

The Club’s financial condition is greatly improved from just a few years ago, but we still have a way to go. We have approximately $6,900,000 in bank debt, which we are working to pay down by approximately $750,000 per year and making good progress. We are happy to report that we are once again putting aside contributions of $240,000 per year to fund our ongoing employee pension plan obligations, but there are significant other costs still in front of us such as medical costs, which continue to increase almost daily. Our Club and its 300 plus employees will certainly continue to be impacted by that fact alone. In summary, for the first six months of this fiscal year, revenues are 2% higher than budgeted; expenses are 2% lower than budgeted. These two small movements have generated significant improvements in cash flow and net profit. It will take everyone’s continued best efforts working together to maintain these positive results through year-end. As we continue funding our immediate needs, we must also increase our investment in the Club’s future. We need to invest in both our programs and facilities to grow our Club and make it an even better Missouri Athletic Club for our current and our future members. Member support and participation have made possible the results we’ve seen so far this year. You can be assured we will continue our best efforts on your behalf going forward.

John Salter, Governor Missouri Athletic Club Cherry Diamond F APRIL 2015 F 7

2015 NACAD Basketball Tournament

Private Club Members Throughout the Country Compete in St. Louis

April 17 – 19, 2015 Since initiating its inception in 1986, the Missouri Athletic Club has competed in the North American Association of Club Athletic Director’s basketball tournament every year. The NACAD tournament brings together members from private city athletic clubs to compete for championships in multiple divisions. The MAC has hosted the NACAD tournament four times (1988, 1994, 2001, and 2015) and won the championship twice in the A division (1999, 2006). This year, the MAC, along with presenting sponsors Stifel and ECF Inc., is hosting the three-day, seven-division tournament in St. Louis for the first time since 2001, when it was held at Washington University. All games will be played at Saint Louis University’s Chaifetz Arena and Simon Recreational Center. About 400 players, coaches, and athletic directors from 35 different teams will participate in the tournament. All of the participating athletic 12 F Cherry Diamond F APRIL 2015

clubs can register a team for each of the seven divisions: Open, A, AA (35+), Masters (45+), Golden Masters (55+), Platinum (60+), and Women’s division. Help give a warm St. Louis welcome to the following private clubs who will be participating in the tournament: F Detroit Athletic Club F Forth Worth Athletic Club F Los Angeles Athletic Club F Milwaukee Athletic Club F Multnomah Athletic Club F New York Athletic Club F Olympic Athletic Club F Spokane Athletic Club F Union League of Chicago F Washington Athletic Club Members are encouraged to attend the tournament and cheer on the MAC’s teams. Check the NACAD webpage on the MAC website (mac-stl.org > Athletics > Basketball > NACAD Tournament) for the tournament schedule. The Open, A, and AA (35+) division games will be played at

the Chaifetz Arena. The Masters (45+), Golden Masters (55+), Platinum (60+), and Women’s division games will be played at the Simon Recreational Center. In addition to the tournament, a variety of activities are planned for the players. Thanks to the tournament’s hospitality sponsors, parties will be held at Lucas Park Grille on Thursday night and the Hilton’s Three Sixty rooftop bar on Saturday night. Crane Agency is also sponsoring a reception for the players. Adding to the weekend’s fun and excitement, the tournament coincides with the St. Louis Cardinals’ first home weekend series of the season. This is a great weekend to wear Cardinals and/or Cherry Diamond red and come out to support the home teams. Hopefully, by having the “home court” advantage and support of cheering fans, the MAC will add another championship title to its list.

About the Tournament

I have had the pleasure of playing in the NACAD Basketball Tournament during the last 14 years of being a member at the MAC. Traveling across the country each year with fellow MAC teammates and seeing first hand all the other athletic cubs is a fantastic experience that I wish others could share. While we love the high level of competition on the court and the familiar faces we compete against each year, the camaraderie experienced off the court is what solidifies the MAC basketball groups’ lifelong friendships. Each year the other athletic club teams from around the country ask us, “Hey, when is the MAC going to host the tournament again? We had such a great time in St. Louis the last time the MAC hosted it!” I am so proud our MAC members and staff agreed to host the NACAD tournament this year. Our great city, our supportive businesses and our platinum club will be showcased proudly in April. I highly encourage all of our fellow members, family members and friends to experience with us, all this weekend in April will offer. – Joel Karsten The NACAD tournament really has brought me closer to the Club. The relationships formed through practices and then the trips made together have made me appreciate what the Club has provided for me. The camaraderie of the team has given me a better appreciation of the relationships that I have formed with the guys through the Club’s Open league as well as lunchtime pickup. As we get older, it is harder and harder to find outlets for our physical competitive spirit. The competition of this tournament is a great way for me as well as my teammates to come together and scratch that itch. It has become a highlight of my year, and every year on the flight home a dehydrated, limping man asks, “where are we going next year? – Rich Sauget, Jr.

The annual NACAD tournament is the culmination of our basketball season. It’s a great event where our MAC teams compete against high-level talent from across the country. The NACAD tourney also gives our team members a chance to travel together and develop real camaraderie with one another both on and off the court, and we relish that opportunity. Hosting the tournament this year will give us a chance to show off our beautiful Downtown Clubhouse and our basketball program as a whole. I hope our members will come out to support our MAC teams and see the great competition. – Governor Troy Robertson

MAC Juniors Take Squash Skills to Detroit Recently, Adam Bews, Squash Pro at the Missouri Athletic Club, traveled to the Birmingham Athletic Club located in Detroit with seven MAC juniors to compete in the Midwest Regional Championships. This was something Bews was really looking forward to since he felt very strongly about having juniors travel to tournaments to gain experience and maturity. The juniors Clayton Pope, Abby Schroeder, Casey Jones, Mia who participated in the trip were Jack Schroeder, Jack Holekamp and Nick Jones Holekamp, Connor Gallagher, Nick Jones, Casey Jones, Clayton Pope, Abby Schroeder and Mia Schroeder. For Holekamp and Gallagher, this was their first tournament. Holekamp managed to reach the Plate 1 finals. Although Pope didn’t proceed as far, he still managed to win a match. Jones won two close 5 setters in a row to win the Plate 2. Gallagher had a more favorable draw and won his first match three nil easily. His round 16 match against the number three seed was his best game to-date. After a shaky start, he managed to regain composure and move his opponent deeper before taking the ball short with confidence. Unfortunately, he lost, 3-2. Jones and Schroeder both lost in close first round matches; although, both girls played well. They managed to win a few successive matches to take them both to the Plate 1 finals where they met. Schroeder took this match three nil despite a late push from Jones. Schroeder, like Gallagher, had a good draw due to previous tournament play. She reached the quarterfinals comfortably, but unfortunately, lost three nil putting her into the consolation. She went on to win several matches and reached the finals, where she lost a close three nil finishing a well-deserved fifth place. Upon return, Bews was thankful to have been present at the championships with such a great group of juniors, and he looks forward to the next trip.

High School Nationals Racquetball Tournament The Missouri Athletic Club West Clubhouse held the High School Nationals Racquetball Tournament Feb. 26-March 1. A resounding 350 young adults played this year and roughly 700 teens, parents, family members and friends attended the event. Lexi York won this year’s girls’ tournament and previously won as a freshman and sophomore; she will most likely be the number one female in the world at some point. Sebastian Fernanda, 14, won the boys’ tournament and also owns the same talent to become a great if he continues to play. The USA Racquetball Association thanked the MAC for being such a great host and said that it has been their best tournament yet.

Developing the Inner Game Moving Performance from Couch to Course

By Missouri Athletic Club’s Consulting Psychologist, Dr. David Lazenby and Director of Golf David Schwent One of the most frustrating issues for most athletes (and onlooking parents) is transferring specific skills, training and abilities with thinking experiences (STATE) from practice sessions to game day performance. It seems that what was mastered in isolation can be reduced to random and inconsistent results when the game begins. On-course instruction is extremely beneficial to improving at the game. Here are the top three reasons why this instruction is crucial: 1. Learn to manage discomfort. On-course instruction will help improve problem-solving and decision-making abilities. Most of all, it can help speed up recovery from mental, technical and ball-target mistakes. 2. Create real-time learning. Get exposure to professional feedback to the actual real-time challenges that the course is designed to present. 3. Become decisive with your flow. Another aspect of generating high-performance results is the ability to transfer the in-the-groove feeling experienced on the practice tee to the course. Many techniques and strategies are available to improve game performance. On-course instruction is optimally designed to help manage discomfort and recover from mis18 F Cherry Diamond F APRIL 2015

takes faster, help receive real-time accelerated feedback in a natural learning setting and enhance decisiveness and focus. As Einstein said, “you can discover more about a man in an hour of play than in a year of conversation.”

Shoe Shines and More! The Missouri Athletic Club offers heel repair, sole repair, leatherwork and shoe shines for men’s and women’s shoes. Get shoes back in shape for spring by dropping them off Monday through Friday in the Athletic Department Downtown, the Barbershop between 10 a.m-12 p.m., or in the Pro Shop at West to be sent Downtown. Golf Club Kickoff

» On the Road Again...With the FYC Forever Young Club members made two visits to the National GeospatialIntelligence Agency last month. After the bomb-sniffing dogs had cleared the MAC bus, the group made it to the museum and was treated to a fascinating story of the history and mission of the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency. Many will remember it first as the Defense Mapping Agency, followed by the National Imagery and Mapping Agency. The FYC saw everything from instruments used for the interpretation of aerial photographs in WWI to a scale model of Osama bin Laden’s compound used to brief the president and congress. The group was fascinated and felt privileged for the opportunity to better understand the important role of NGIA in St. Louis and the nation as a whole. The FYC always offers a number of enjoyable day-trips throughout the year. (No photos accompany this piece since the NGIA prohibits cameras and cell phones.)

From the

GENERAL MANAGER Greetings from my temporary place of residence within this issue of the Cherry Diamond. We chose to move my column this month to make way for the bylaw update on page 6 thus giving that message more prominence due to the importance of this initiative. To reiterate last month’s message, I want to give a special thanks to those on our Bylaws and Ethics Committee and all of the subgroups and members involved for their diligence with this very detailed project. It was a multi-year undertaking and a ton of work. Thanks to all. There are a couple other exciting projects in the works that I want to share. First, the ten hotel rooms that were offline for many years are in the midst of renovation and should be available for your use in mid-May. Secondly, we’ve been investigating opportunities with the city’s Set the PACE St. Louis program for the past year and half in conjunction with Trane heating and air conditioning. This program offers the possibility of generating significant cost savings by upgrading our HVAC system to comply with green energy initiatives with no out-of-pocket costs. More information will follow on the viability of this exciting project. Also, this month, we look forward to the announcement of candidates for the next class of our Board of Governors. The camaraderie and fun of election season is in the air! See you at the Club,

A BasketbaII Legacy Recently, this photo of the 1906-07 Missouri Athletic Club basketball team was recovered. The photo is a good reminder of the important role that basketball has played in the Club’s history, and the timing is relevant as the MAC prepares to host the 2015 NACAD Basketball Tournament later this month. The sport of basketball has longevity at the MAC dating back for more

joyed at the MAC in the form of teams, recreation, tournaments, and Good Fellowship Day competitions. Sports camps and clinics for children include basketball as an option, and the MAC holds its annual Basketball Banquet to recognize and bestow awards on star players from throughout the year. The photo will be restored and displayed on the fifth floor to further highlight the MAC basketball legacy.
