PRESIDENT’S COLUMN

Greetings, on behalf of one of the finest clubs in America. As stated before, the Missouri Athletic Club is a special place. You will meet some of the most amazing people in your lives right here at the club, and that is not limited to our members. It also extends to our staff and employees. Simply stated, if you are not engaging and embracing our staff, you’re shortchanging your membership. For the second consecutive year, I had the distinct honor of participating in the MAC Employee Service Awards. I want to extend a major shout out to Human Resources Director, Chris Maurer and her team for putting together an amazing program for the evening. Our staff is a special group and a necessary foundation block for making the MAC great. On this evening, we had an opportunity to recognize dedicated service, tenured milestones and special contributions. The most telling description of the evening was that this remains one of the most enjoyable events I’ve attended at the MAC. It is election season, both nationally and here at the MAC. In just a few days, we’ll announce the candidates for our 2016 Board of Governors class. Please check your email and the MAC website on April 5 for candidate bio information or the May issue of the Cherry Diamond, which will be mailed earlier than usual. After April 5, candidate bios can also be picked up at the Downtown Clubhouse’s Front Desk or the West Clubhouse’s Pro Shop. You may also request an election brochure by contacting Gena Willis at 314-539-4475 or gwillis@mac-stl.org. I encourage you to attend the Election Rooftop Party on April 28 to mingle with both candidates and other members. Also, please see page 9 for the voting schedule and recently released voting details. In an effort to get a more comprehensive membership vote, we’ve made some enhancements to our voting process by instituting electronic voting in addition to the absentee options. Our intention with the

increased membership vote is to also preserve the tradition, history and fellowship that so many of our members enjoy on Election Day. For some of our newer members who have not had the pleasure of participating in Election Day, I encourage you to come join in the experience. On March 18, Maggie Hales, Executive Director of CityArchRiver gave an informative presentation on the progress of this amazing project and the transformation of the grounds surrounding the Gateway Arch. It will be our pleasure to host Maggie again as our featured speaker on April 8 at the annual Women of Distinction Luncheon. This has become one of the more prestigious events and honors at the MAC. I encourage you to join us as we celebrate the contributions and accomplishments of this outstanding class of honorees. If you missed the Golf Season Kickoff event on March 30, please review pages 18-19 for more details about our exciting improvements and opportunities, most notably the addition of Maria Palozola, our new Head Golf Professional. For those members that are fortunate enough to be blessed with daughters, I cannot overstate how special our Father/Daughter dance is next month. I encourage you to consider attending. It remains one of the most special events on our annual calendar and a highlight in our family. Just as fun, the Apollos will gather on Friday, April 29 for their annual spring concert. Please come out and enjoy this dinner as the gentlemen graciously provide you with an entertaining evening filled with a litany of recognizable tunes. 1903 construction is coming along smoothly at the West Clubhouse, and we anticipate being open for business sometime in May. I invite all members to come out and enjoy the new space and renovated dining facilities upon completion. You’re going to enjoy this enhanced experience; I guarantee it. Lastly, in case you missed it with all of the media chaos about the Rams skipping town, the Cardinals and Blues decided to stay in town. As the calendar turns to April that means two things: the Cardinals home opener is Monday, April 11 and the Blues remain locked in an intense battle for playoff home ice. Hit the club for Cards and Blues pregame festivities, and ride the shuttle to the game(s). I hope to see you at the club,

GENERAL MANAGER’S COLUMN

Camaraderie is one of those key buzz words used frequently to describe the culture of the Missouri Athletic Club. Most often, it’s used to illustrate the strong bond that exists between members. It’s often said that members join the club for a number of reasons, but that the club’s camaraderie is the reason for returning year after year. I believe the longevity of many of our members is a testament to that statement. The really cool thing about the MAC is that the club’s camaraderie doesn’t exist solely amongst the members; it’s also very present within the staff. In March, we celebrated one of my favorite nights of the year: The Employee Service Awards. If you’re unfamiliar with this event, a dinner is hosted on an annual basis to honor and recognize the MAC’s staff who go above and beyond to ensure that you, our membership, have a platinum (BELOW) STAFF WITH PERFECT ATTENDANCE IN 2015.

»

club experience. On this night, the camaraderie between staff is extremely evident. I wish the entire membership could squeeze into the Crystal Room to witness the smiles, laughter and cheers amongst the staff. We poke fun at each other. It gets a little rowdy. Everything from the décor to the people seems to sparkle. Our athletic and fitness folks trade spandex for a suit and sneakers for stilettos. Our servers, housekeeping and maintenance staff get out of uniform and into their finest for this special evening. Then, everyone comes together, and we celebrate the front and back office staff. From the folks that you see every time you enter the club such as the smiling faces at the front desk, your personal trainers, and the bartender or server who knows your drink of choice without asking to the behind-thescenes operators such as our dishwashers, housekeeping staff, cooks, number crunchers in accounting, and the planners and strategists who contemplate the future of this glorious institution. Even some of our retirees attend because they just can’t stay away! We pride ourselves on being one club with two locations, and its awesome to see the staff from both locations come together with a common love for the MAC. My favorite part is the program that follows the cocktail reception and dinner, which honors employees who have achieved five, ten, fifteen, twenty, twenty-five, thirty and thirty-five years

of service during the past year. Special recognition is given to the employees who joined the Twenty-Five Year Club and employees who had perfect attendance the previous year. As each lustrum is recognized, we recount the big things from that year such as what made headlines to the top songs and movies and the average price of a movie ticket, which has practically doubled in price during the past 25 years! Ten staff members were recognized for serving the MAC for more than 20 years. Again, what a testament to the culture of our club! Those in attendance also learned fun facts about each of the individuals being recognized such as their most embarrassing moment, fondest MAC memory, and items on their bucket list. A few years ago, I found out that Don, our shoe shiner, has a terrific singing voice so we started a new tradition where he serenades us at the event. This year, he wowed the crowd with his rendition of My Funny Valentine. The MAC is truly blessed with some talented staff. Our Distinguished Employees from the past year are also recognized. All of the honorees received a gift in appreciation for their service. They’re also invited to bring a plus one to share the experience, which makes it even more fun to brag about them to the people they care about. One of the things I enjoy most about the Service Awards is the reaction of our Governors who attend for the first time. They’re often amazed by the camaraderie of our staff. They enjoy the stories and laughter, and they are left with a new appreciation of our staff’s dedication and affection for the club. In the end, their love of the club comes from the same place as your love of the club. It’s about the awesome people who make this a fun place to be year after year. From our staff and myself, thank you for letting us serve you in this capacity.

World Traveler: ClubCorp Expands the Membership Experience

Governor Tim Slater and Juan Moore share their experiences using ClubCorp’s elite network of more than 150 golf and country clubs nationwide and worldwide. GOVERNOR TIM SLATER Governor Tim Slater regularly uses ClubCorp’s nationwide clubs during his business travels. CD: How long have you been a member of the MAC? TS: I have been a member of the MAC for almost 25 years, including a number of years while living in London and Chicago. CD: What prompted you to become a ClubCorp member? TS: My IT training business is based in St. Louis, but I travel to expand our IT/government services business unit. The places I visit offer great ClubCorp benefits

such as golf and dining for the price of a cart fee and even free dining at times. CD: How would you describe your experiences using ClubCorp? TS: My experiences are very good. It gives me a great and comfortable atmosphere of being at home away from home. The quality of service and friendliness of the staff is awesome. I dine in Boston, Washington D.C. and Chicago to name a few ClubCorp locations. These are similar city clubs to our Downtown Clubhouse location. The atmosphere is wonderful as these facilities are normally located on the top floors of class-A facilities offering awesome city views. The food is amazing, and the service is great. I also travel to Florida, Las Vegas, San Antonio and Hawaii. Playing golf for the cost of a cart fee at these nicely

manicured private/public courses is always a treat. ClubCorp makes my travel entertainment much more economical. CD: How has being a ClubCorp member benefited your MAC membership? TS: It has extended my private club membership beyond St. Louis (globally) at a very low cost. It extends exponentially the number of golf courses I have access to for a very insignificant cost. CD: Why should prospective ClubCorp members join? TS: I would recommend ClubCorp to anyone that travels. The biggest benefits of joining are the free meals per month at each club as well as free golf green fees.

JUAN MOORE Juan Moore, a relatively new member and avid golf player, uses ClubCorp’s offerings during business and family trips. CD: How long have you been a member of the MAC? JM: I have been a member just shy of two years. CD: What prompted you to become a ClubCorp member? JM: I travel heavily for business and thought I could use the business/dining clubs for client meetings and dinners while on the road. I must also admit that I’m a golfer and saw the opportunity to play on additional courses as an extra bonus while traveling. CD: How would you describe your experiences using ClubCorp? JM: ClubCorp is very easy to use. I find my desired location through the ClubCorp website and call or email to make the reservation.

I have used the dining and golf amenities in Orlando with my family. I have also used ClubCorp amenities in Dallas, Costa Mesa, Chicago, Atlanta, Boston, and Richmond. CD: How has being a ClubCorp member benefited your MAC membership? JM: Since I use ClubCorp while on the road, it reminds me to get the most out of my MAC membership while at home. I use both clubhouses more now than when I first joined. CD: Why should prospective ClubCorp members join? JM: For anyone who travels often, the membership pays for itself with one complimentary dinner or round of golf. Members receive two four-course dinners each month at their business/dinner clubs and two complimentary rounds of golf each month (TaylorMade golf club rentals are available at all private golf courses). ClubCorp also offers many other benefits including a concierge service for getting tickets to major events and discounts at upscale hotel chains like Omni and Ritz Carlton.

Stillman Street Alexander Valley Chardonnay 2014 This wine is crafted from 100% estate-grown fruit from Alexander Valley’s acclaimed Stuhlmuller Vineyard. Planted in a well-drained, sandy loam section of the vineyard, these grapes come from the famed Gauer clone, which is known for its pear and spice notes. Aromas: Filled with orchard fruit aromas of Anjou pear and golden delicious apples, this wine has notes of citrus oil and honeysuckle. Tasting Note: On the palate, the pear and apple flavors continue alongside layers of peach and ripe grapefruit. This 2014 vintage displays a creamy texture with hints of oak-inspired vanilla and enticing spice.

Huber Estate Heritage 2010 Red Wine Heritage is a robust blend of some of our finest barrel-aged red wine. It’s blended primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. All are barrel-aged for 11-14 months. Fitness Tip

Instead of lifting weights for a certain amount of repetitions, lift weights for a certain amount of time. Not only will this allow a few more reps to be made, but will push the sets to the point of muscle fatigue. During your next workout, try 30-, 45- or even 60-second sets!

Weight Loss Challengers Continue to Shed Pounds Fifteen members are participating in the Weight Loss Challenge. The winner will be the member who has the largest percentage of weight lost and the combined team with the largest percentage of weight lost. Member Hal Ball competed in the Buck to Buck swim race this past November and recommends it to all MAC swimmers. The race, sponsored by the Buccaneer Hotel in St. Croix, starts on Buck Island and stretches five miles to the resort’s beach where a steel drum band and island refreshments await participants. Ball trained for the race over the summer in several pools and lakes, but during the final six weeks leading up to the competition, he trained solely at the MAC since the West Clubhouse’s pool stays open later than any other outdoor pool in town. Ball also attributes a lot of his motivation to the use of his waterproof iPod Shuffle, which kept him going lap after lap.

Ball typically swam between one and two hours per session at a mile every 30 minutes. During the race, Ball swam the five miles in two hours, 19 minutes and 30 seconds, and he placed 22nd out of the 82 participants and fifth out of 15 in his age group. The race also offers one-mile and two-mile distances and Ball’s triathlete wife, Holly Ball, who regularly trains at the West Clubhouse, swam the two-mile distance for fun and came in third in her age group. For more information on the competition, visit www.swimrace.com. Hal Ball is an owner and broker at Hilliker Corporation Commercial Real Estate.

2016 CSC Charity Highlight: Lift for Life Academy Lift For Life Academy is a challenging learning community where all students are empowered to maximize their full potential as students and citizens. With the focus on St. Louis’ education crisis, it’s nice to hear about schools, students and teachers who are making the grade. One such success story is Lift For Life Academy. Founded in 2000, under the sponsorship of Southeast Missouri State University, Lift For Life Academy (LFLA) is St. Louis’ first independent charter school, serving 585 students in grades 6-12 from the city of St. Louis. LFLA is a free, public school with a private-school approach to education. LFLA strives to level the playing field so students are competitive with those from better-resourced districts while preparing the most disadvantaged children to have what every child deserves–a chance to successfully contribute to the community as an employee, parent or citizen. LFLA utilizes a student-centered, supportive and stimulating environment, designed especially for urban, low-income and struggling youngsters. Students typically advance academically more than one grade level each year they attend the academy, allowing them to graduate on time. Academics focus on students developing skills to succeed in post-secondary educational and professional experiences. To learn more, visit LFLA’s website at www.liftforlifeacademy.org. To learn more about the other CSC 2016 charities, go to the Clubs Within the Club page on the MAC website or contact CSC chairman Sam Hopmeier at 314-434-5266 or homeier@aol.com.

CUSTOM BUILT HOME AND PINK AND YELLOW BRUSH

As Steve Morris looks over his collection of natural objects, he is searching for just the right item for his next painting. He chooses a bird nest; small, delicate and beautifully imperfect. “This one is it,” he says. He recalls the Japanese principle of Wabi-Sabi, the aesthetic ideal of finding beauty in imperfection and impermanence. This ideal has guided much of Morris’s work from the very beginning. He brings this vision of the natural world to his watercolor paintings. Gently turning the bird nest around in his hands, Morris pays close attention to the extraordinary details of this ordinary, discarded object. In his paintings he strives to show the artistry in any of the subjects he paints. Whether he is painting a vibrant, elaborate floral or an earthy, fragile bird nest, Morris expresses the beauty that might have otherwise gone unnoticed. Morris began painting in 2009 after retiring from his career in graphic design and marketing. Transparent watercolors and graphite are the mediums he uses most. His work has been exhibited locally and nationally. He has had a piece included in the Susan K. Black Foundation’s Blossom II, Art of Flowers International Exhibition and has received the Watercolor Missouri International 2013 Members Award. To purchase any work on display, contact Morgan Franke at 314-539-4438 or mfranke@mac-stl.org.

How Can I Support the Foundations? By Director of Foundations, Cynthia Goudy Just last month, the annual Foundations’ Gala was celebrated with more than 200 members in attendance. It was a legendary event with cocktails, red carpet photos, themed food stations and music by Griffin and the Gargoyles. More than $30,000 was raised for the three foundations! Though this year’s gala is over, our philanthropic efforts stretch beyond our social season. The Foundations’ Golf Tournament is on the horizon, and development efforts are underway for our Planned Giving and Annual Fund programs. To reiterate the theme of the gala, thank you to our members who are leading the planned giving effort by including the MAC in their estate plan. The MAC has brought so much value to the lives of its members and vice versa. There is a plethora of opportunities on how your gift to the MAC will impact

the club as we strive to remain a national leader in the private club sector. If you are interested in including the Missouri Athletic Club in your estate plan, please contact me. The Missouri Athletic Club has some of the most generous members in St. Louis who continually support our annual efforts throughout the year. Soon our annual fund program will kickoff in conjunction with our Foundations’ Golf Tournament. Supporting the foundations impacts the club and the community in the following ways: F The Downtown Clubhouse is a historical landmark in the heart of St. Louis. Preservation of the building is a top priority to continue as a leading private club in the nation. F The Missouri Athletic Club houses an extensive and unique art collection. Our goal is to continue to collect and restore art that will enhance the

F F

club and add value to our members. Throughout the year, community outreach is a continuous effort funded by the Sports Foundation. The MAC has worked with extraordinary organizations such as the Special Olympics, Legacies Alive and CityArchRiver Foundation. The Charitable Society for Children has collectively donated close to $250,000 over the past 10 years.

I hope that you will give your support to the MAC. If you have any questions about the foundations, please contact me. Cynthia Goudy Director of Foundations 314-797-5474 cgoudy@mac-stl.org
