PRESIDENT’S COLUMN

»

Our Grand Lady During speeches throughout my presidency, I often mentioned that the Missouri Athletic Club has operated at the corner of 4th and Washington since 1903. While doing some research for this column, I discovered that to be false on two accounts. First, the Club was originally formed as the St. Louis Athletic Club, only later did the name permanently change to MAC. Second, the Club was first slated to be located at Fourth and Locust, one block South, before quickly moving to the corner of Fourth and Washington when space became available in the Boatmen’s Bank building. Ten years later, tragedy struck the MAC when a fire destroyed the Boatmen’s building on March 8, 1914. Thirty members and guests died that night and another seven died two days later when the still standing west wall collapsed on a nearby building. From the ashes, the Board of Governors with the help of First National Bank President William C. Connett, chairman of the New Building Committee, decided to rebuild the Missouri Athletic Club at its present location. Our new clubhouse, the one we all call home, reopened on March 1, 1916. Incredibly, it was just a few days shy of the two-year anniversary of the fire. More than 5,000 members and guests attended the grand opening festivities. Undoubtedly, those first open house visitors noticed our Grand Lady was built with exquisite detail and old world craftsmanship. More importantly, she was built with an abundant supply of warmth, an overwhelmingly sense of hospitality, and boundless welcoming arms. Since 1916, our Grand Lady has hosted thousands of events. From mammoth crowds of 1,200 kids (yes 1,200 kids!) in the main dining room for Santa’s party in the 1920’s to the 50-year Gala celebration in 1953 with more than 600 attendees to the 1960’s when a new KMOX broadcaster named Jack Buck hosted a precursor event,

which evolved into the Sports Personality of the Year awards banquet. She continued into the 1970’s when then Governor M.R. Zumwalt brought his son, Tripp,

Board of Governors Officers F Troy Robertson – President F Tracy Beckette – Vice President

to one of the first Father/Son banquets. Yes, our Grand Lady has hosted galas and weddings, fundraisers and celebrations, elections and Good Fellowship Days. She has housed them all with timeless beauty and a congenial spirit. Our Grand lady has also seen times change and world events shape her course. She lived through WWI when the men of the MAC answered the call to duty. She paused in silent reverence when Sgt. Oliver B. Vassal and Lt. Charles H. Dunker Jr. became the first MAC men to pay the ultimate price for our country. She saw the Great Depression, when membership dipped slightly under the 2,500 minimum. Shortly thereafter, she opened her bars when Prohibition was repealed in 1933 – rumor has it a young Don Hrebek joined upon the news. She heard the guns of Europe and Pearl Harbor in the early 1940’s during WWII, and she set up a blood blank for American soldiers smack dab in the center of the main lobby. It makes me smile to think of our Grand Lady welcoming American troops home over all these years. Do we all realize how special our Grand Lady is? Do we all realize how every time we walk in and out of her doors that we become a part of her history? If you haven’t visited our Grand Lady recently, please accept this column as an invitation to do so. She’ll introduce you to new friends or reunite you with lifelong ones. She can still host an event or banquet like she’s ringing a bell. Most importantly, she offers the same sense of warmth, camaraderie, and community that has defined her for 100+ years. Please visit her for yourself and experience the history of our Club’s past, and while there create your own MAC memory. In service,

GENERAL MANAGER’S COLUMN

In my March column, I mentioned that we had recently received the results from the membership survey, and we were starting to dig through them. I say “digging through them” for two reasons: (1) the compiled results comprise a 900+-page document (whew!), and (2) the results have been cross-tabulated by gender, age, and family composition, which means that we’re not only looking at the composite score or response to a question, but we’re also looking at the responses from the perspective of our different members. By “we” I mean that myself, the senior staff, and the strategic planning committee are actively reviewing the results. Everyone has received the Executive Summary, senior staff are reviewing the in-depth results for their individual departments, and members of the strategic planning committee are digging into the details as well. And these details matter. For example, when asked about the convenience of downtown fitness classes, the composite scored showed the majority answered for “good.” But, upon a closer look, nearly 50% of the female responses indicated that they thought the times were “poor” or “fair.” In general, our goal is to move our “good” scores to “very good,” and now we know that offering fitness classes at other times would appeal to our female members (who, according to recent studies, make approximately 85% of discretionary decisions). 6 F Cherry Diamond F APRIL 2017

Also, as an example on how points of view differ by age, when asked about the importance of business networking, members under the age of 35 indicated that networking opportu-nities were important in their decision to become a member whereas their counterparts over the age of 45 ranked it as less important; likely because young business professionals are eager to make connections, and older members already have established relationships. From a membership perspective, we asked two very important questions: why did you join, and why do you stay? The answers to these questions pinpoint where we need to continually focus our energies. Our dining and fitness facilities consistently ranked the highest for why members join the Club and retain their membership, which is on par with trends we’re seeing in the private club industry. Club aesthetics/ attractiveness, culture and reputation of the Club, value of membership, location, and sense of community also ranked highly for reasons that members join the Club and retain their membership. Not surprisingly, “connections to other members” was one of the main reasons membership is retained, which just reinforces that club camaraderie is such a key factor in who we are. The survey results contain a treasure trove of invaluable member insights. We will continue to share our findings with you along with our strategic plan for the Club’s future as it unfolds in the coming the months. Look for more details in the Cherry Diamond, and some fun but insightful videos on our website and YouTube channel soon. In the interim, envision me hosting the TV game show Family Feud and declaring, “survey says…” as you read the interesting tidbits in the following column. See you at the Club,

Wally Smith, General Manager Missouri Athletic Club

Survey Says ... 98% of respondents are proud to be MAC members. F 97% of respondents rate their overall membership experience as good, very good, or excellent. F About 75% of respondents considered their overall fitness experience to be “good” or “very good.” Only a small percentage (11% for West and 16% for Downtown) found the experience to be “excellent.” F For overall satisfaction scores, the 1903 bar ranked the highest compared to all other experiences at the Club. Social events/catering, the Sportsman’s Club and squash followed closely behind. F For fitness, “instructor professionalism” (WE) and “professional staff” (DT) ranked most favorably and “class time availability” (WE) and “women’s locker rooms” (DT) ranked the lowest. F The Cherry Diamond magazine continues to be the most frequently utilized communica- tion medium. F Staff service ranked the highest amongst all of the Club’s restaurants with the exception of 1903 where it followed ambiance. F 85% of respondents agree that they receive great value from their MAC membership.

THE MAC’s Four Under 40

Congratulation to the following MAC members who were recently recognized by the St. Louis Business Journal as four of St. Louis’ top young professionals under the age of 40. Ross Toohey, Member since July 2016 Owner of 2e Creative Ross Toohey became a managing partner of his uncle’s business in 2008, president in 2012 and CEO in 2015 while elevating revenue to an excess of $25 million. CD: Why did you apply for membership at the MAC? RT: I’m not from St. Louis originally so I saw it as a great opportunity to make new friends while transforming my dad bod back into a beach bod. So far I’ve only been successful on the friends thing. CD: Have you held any events at the Club? RT: We’ve held several meetings for 2e Creative at the Downtown Clubhouse. It’s

right down the street from our headquarters so it’s been a great venue for leadership retreats and client meetings. I’m also on the faculty for a network of ad agency presidents from around the world, and I’ll be hosting a summit at the MAC later this year. We’ll likely run the bar out of whiskey so be prepared. CD: Have you used the Club for networking regarding your company? RT: I haven’t been able to take advantage of the networking opportunities yet because I travel so much. I’m really looking forward to connecting with the various clubs soon. CD: What are some of your favorite aspects of the Club? RT: That steam room! Now if only I could have cocktails delivered there … CD: Why should other young professionals join the MAC?

RT: The MAC is a fantastic slice of American history, not to mention the Club’s relevance to the city of St. Louis. I think our generation often underappreciates the history and culture of a place, and joining the MAC is a great chance to continue a fascinating legacy. I’m also excited for my family to get more involved in the West Clubhouse activities once our daughters are a little older. Most of all, I’m really looking forward to someday joining the secret guild of medieval combat mages who meet on the twelfth floor. That’s a thing, right? Rob Berger, Member since Septmeber 2016 Partner at Anders CPA + Advisors Rob Berger ascended from intern to partner at Anders CPAs + Advisors and helped achieve consistent revenue gains in recent years, currently at $2.7 million. CD: What do you enjoy most about membership at the Missouri Athletic Club? RB: I enjoy the Clubs Within the Club and general camaraderie among members. CD: Why did you apply for membership at the MAC? RB: Several of my business partners are members, and they encouraged me to join.

CD: Have you hosted any events at the Club? RB: I frequently have prospect and client meetings at the Club. It’s a great place to network and meet for business. I am also on the local CFMA board, and we have meetings at the West Clubhouse fairly frequently. CD: Have you used the Club for networking? RB: I recently attended the Tap Handle Takeover at the West Clubhouse. Great event! CD: Why should other young professionals join the MAC? RB: The MAC provides a great place for like-minded young professionals to connect and begin to expand their networks early in their careers.

Jay Steinback, Member since April 2013 President and CEO of Rothman Furniture Stores, Inc. Jay Steinback said goodbye to his boyhood dream of marine biology and opted to become the successful president and CEO of his family’s Rothman Furniture Stores in 2013. CD: What do you enjoy most about the Missouri Athletic Club? JS: The two locations and the lunch buffet! CD: Why did you apply for membership at the MAC? JS: I have been a member on and off since I was a kid. Fitness and health are a huge part of my life, and the MAC certainly helps my kids and I maintain an active lifestyle. CD: Have you hosted any events or business meetings at the Club? JS: I hold multiple events per month. My EO and YPO forums meet here almost every month plus Rothman’s board meets there quarterly. I also hold a bunch of coffee or breakfast meetings that everyone always enjoys.

THIS IS

CD: Have you used the Club for networking? JS: I have lots of gym friends with whom I hang out at 5 a.m. most weekdays. CD: Why should other young professionals join the MAC? JS: The MAC has the hours and the locations that are ideal for a young, active professional. I can start my day at 5 a.m. in the gym and walk upstairs for a few meetings and breakfast in the morning before heading out to the office. Plus, the staff is amazing and accommodating. Extra Note: The MAC is amazingly accommodating and hospitable, the staff is always happy to help in any way possible. The range of facilities under one roof makes it easy to spend hours there every day. Tim Reeves, Member since November 2015 Vice President of Finance at Emerson Tool Tim Reeves quickly rose to Vice President of Finance at Emerson Tool within a couple of years at the company and has been instrumental in the company’s growth and profitability.

CD: Why did you apply for membership at the MAC? TR: I initially joined the Club with an interest in racquetball but have also started working out at the West Clubhouse in the early mornings. That’s been generally a good way to start my days with coffee, a workout, a shower and heading into work. CD: Have you hosted any events at the Club? TR: I haven’t used the Club for events but recently checked out lunch at the Downtown Clubhouse, and I’ve occasionally had a few colleagues out for drinks and apps at the West Clubhouse. CD: How do you plan on utilizing the Club in the future? TR: I will continue to workout in the mornings and would like to get involved in the squash ladder. My kids are at an age where they can get involved with the swim team and begin to take tennis lessons, which I hope they will want to do. There are a lot of other activities I’d like to expose them to as well. In general, I hope my kids become junior “Club junkies” at the MAC.

MAC Meeting Corner

O F F S I T E B R A I N S TO R M I N G S E S S I O N S Collaboration is vital for any business, and brainstorming sessions usually foster collaboration and new ideas. Most of the time, offsite sessions are the best way to promote teamwork and get creative juices flowing, whether it be structured with a moderator or unstructured. Fancy processes are not needed to generate ideas, but a change in environment does matter. Opting for a meeting room at the Club is the way to go! The MAC offers a myriad of flexible spaces such as the comfortable and quiet sixth floor Board Room, which boasts three breakout rooms perfect for smaller groups or breakfast or lunch for its attendees. Ensure that the meeting has a firm goal in mind including specific questions to be presented and answered. Most importantly, the environment chosen for the meeting will guarantee a successful creative process and will increase the social nature of the project.

For more information or ideas on how to build a structured meeting, or to host a meeting at the Club, contact Najah Fennoy at 314-458-8744 or nfennoy@mac-stl.org.

LEGENDS of t he COURT

The Missouri Athletic Club was born just one year before the 1904 Olympic Games in St. Louis. Harry Kiener, John Furla and Joseph Forshaw were some of the early stars that put MAC athletics on the map. That tradition of athletic excellence has continued for more than a century. Today, the Club has another trio of legends that could be placed on the Mount Rushmore of MAC athletics.

hile “Athletic” may be the Missouri Athletic Club’s middle name, camaraderie is the heart and soul of the organization. It is the secret ingredient that keeps members connected to their Club, which is especially true for Jim McDonald, Don Clooney and Charlie Wittenberg. They recently gathered for lunch in the Sportsman’s Club with retired Athletic Director Dan Barks to reminisce about camaraderie and athletic competition. Sitting around the table with these four men combined more than 200 years of MAC memories, and they were clearly remembered by their fellow Club members. Like local celebrities, they were greeted warmly by nearly every member and staff person who saw them. “All three of these gentlemen were fantastic athletes, but they are even better people,” said Barks. Jim McDonald, 84, a 62-year MAC member, was known as the “racquet guy.” He was a well-rounded athlete and talented in multiple racquet sports such as tennis, squash, pickleball and badminton. “Jim could compete and win tournaments in any type of racquet sport,” Barks said. “With a racquet in his hand, he was the most versatile athlete we had.” Don Clooney, 87, a 61-year member, dominated in handball by winning the Club championship for 14 consecutive years. He was also a prolific swimmer setting numerous records. In 1948, he was a goalie on the famed water polo team that competed for the AAU national championship. He is the only member of the MAC Hall of Fame to be inducted for two sports. He even has a spot in the Hall of Fame room dedicated to him – Clooney’s

Corner. “Don is one of the best all-around athletes in Club history,” Barks said. Charlie Wittenberg, 82, a 42-year member, played college basketball at Notre Dame. He is the career leader in games played and points scored in the MAC basketball leagues. For many years, he played in both the Under 40 and Over 40 leagues. “Charlie was an exceptional shooter and a great teammate,” said Barks. “He was always one of the first players taken in our team drafts.” As the gentlemen began eating and conversing, the memories of past athletic battles came flooding back. Clooney and McDonald debated about who was the Club’s best swimmer. Barks and Wittenberg talked about adventures on the road with the Club’s basketball team. The discussions invariably progressed to the camaraderie, fellowship and friendships that they formed at the MAC. “The very best thing,” notes Wittenberg, “is the people you got to meet; it just clicks. I have met so many good friends here. I don’t know of another organization that has the whole package quite like the MAC.” Don Clooney and Jim McDonald have shared a friendship since meeting at the Club nearly 60 years ago. “He is one of my best friends and has been for all these years,” McDonald said about Clooney in a video interview that was a sensation continued »

on the MAC Facebook page a few years ago. “I wouldn’t want it any other way.” McDonald later quipped, “There’s no way that I would have him as my next-door neighbor, even with as much as I love him.” Today, they live very close to one another, but not quite “next-door neighbors.” They recently moved into the same retirement home, with McDonald on the first floor and Clooney on the fourth floor. While age has slowed them a bit, it hasn’t stopped these legends of the court. Clooney still swims several days a week, and McDonald remains very active. Wittenberg played in the Club’s basketball leagues into his late 70s before retiring just a few years ago, but he still likes to get out on the court to shoot around. During the photo shoot for this story, while dribbling a basketball, Wittenberg pointed to the sign that hangs high on the gymnasium wall and said, “That’s it! That is what it is all about.” The sign reads: “We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing.”

Dan Barks - A Look Back at a Legendary Career

While the Club’s top athletes are immortalized in the Hall of Fame Room on the fourth floor, just a few feet away the men who were as important in building the MAC’s sports tradition are remembered in the Athletic Director’s Room. Inside the room, Dan Barks’ portrait hangs alongside the portrait of Carl Bauer, the man who hired him in 1957. Together, the two witnessed more than 90 years of MAC athletics. As a 17-year-old, Dan began working at the Club as a locker room attendant. He went on to work a variety of other jobs in the Athletic Department including pool assistant, gym coordinator and assistant athletic director before being promoted to the top post in 1982. Barks is always humble when talking about the accolades received during his tenure at the MAC, but you know you 18 F Cherry Diamond F APRIL 2017

are a pretty big deal when the likes of Stan “the Man” Musial attends your retirement party and Joe Buck is the Master of Ceremonies. Barks retired from the MAC in 2005, but the Club remains close to his heart. “It is the only place where I worked,” said Barks. “Although, at the age of eight, I worked at a supermarket where I delivered groceries in a red wagon, and then I worked for a few years at a pharmacy where they made their own ice cream. Meeting so many wonderful members made this such a special place to work and is the reason I never left.” Barks was not just a spectator during his four decades at the Club. He was also an excellent athlete in his own right. Barks was a key member of the MAC’s club traveling volleyball team for many years. A highlight was being a part of the team that pulled off several upsets and finished fourth in the nation in the 1976 U.S.V.B.A. Tournament in Schenectady, N.Y. The MAC squad was knocked out in a close semi-final match with Tom Selleck’s famed Outrigger Club of Honolulu. “The friendships I developed over the years made working at the Club so enjoyable and made leaving that much more difficult,” Barks said. “The MAC has been so good to me and been a big part of my life.”

Announcing the 2017 Women of Distinction The Missouri Athletic Club is pleased to announce this year’s Women of Distinction honorees. Join us at the luncheon to recognize these individuals for their achievements and contributions to the St. Louis community. This event, which is open to the public, will feature keynote speaker Lisa Stone, head coach for Saint Louis University’s women’s basketball team. KMOV meteorologist, Kristen Cornett, will emcee the program. LISA STONE, KEYNOTE SPEAKER Lisa Stone, the 2015-16 Atlantic 10 Conference women’s basketball Coach of the Year, is in her fifth season at Saint Louis University. Stone guided her team to a breakthrough season a year ago as the Billikens captured a school-record 26 victories, tied for the A-10 regular-season championship – the first league title in program history – and advanced to the WNIT third round. This year’s team, which was picked to repeat as conference champion, won 14 of its first 17 games and earned a top-5 national ranking among mid-major programs. Now in her 31st season as a collegiate head coach, Stone owns almost 600 career wins and has guided 19 of her teams to postseason play. She began her career at Cornell (Iowa) and made stops at Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Drake and Wisconsin before arriving at SLU in May 2012.

KRISTEN CORNETT, EMCEE Meteorologist Kristen Cornett joined the 4Warn Storm Team in October 2007 and provides weather for the morning, early evening and late evening newscasts on Saturday and Sunday. During the week she fills in on other shifts or assists during Storm Mode coverage. Kristen earned the Seal of Approval from the American Meteorological Society in 1999. Kristen grew up in Lexington, Ky. and became fascinated with severe weather at an early age. She graduated from Mississippi State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in geoscience with an emphasis in meteorology. Kristen worked at television stations in Huntsville, Ala., Louisville Ky., Cincinnati and New York City before coming to KMOV. Outside of weather, Kristen’s greatest passions are travel, fitness classes and spending time with her husband, stepson and rescue dog.
