from the president After a cold winter, the signs of spring are refreshing. The air is getting warmer. The grass is turning green. Easter decorations abound. The Cardinals are back in town. The Blues have an eye on the playoffs. Time to clean out the garage. More importantly, now is the time to refresh your involvement with the Missouri Athletic Club. Have I told you why I love the MAC? F MAC Staff – I can’t emphasize it enough. We are fortunate to have some of the best, brightest, most service-oriented staff around. They are one of the reasons we are a Platinum Club of America and among the top 5% of private clubs in the nation. I recently attended the annual MAC Employee Service Awards dinner, which recognizes staff for their years of service, distinguished employees and perfect attendance. I was impressed by the dedication of many long-time staff. The service our members receive is tremendous! F Foundations – Our three foundations were created to provide a mechanism for our members to support the ongoing legacy of the MAC and its values of tradition, community and culture. The Preservation, Art and Sports Foundations help the MAC preserve and rejuvenate our historic Downtown Clubhouse, maintain the MAC’s vast art collection, and recognize outstanding amateur athletic performance and achievement. In addition, the Sports Foundation’s Charitable Society for Children provides grants to numerous children’s charities in the region. In fiscal year 2018, more than $150,000 has been raised by our foundations. F Fitness and Wellness – The MAC offers many opportunities to lose some of that “winter weight” and improve overall health. Your opportunities just expanded with the renovation and addition of two new multi-purpose group exercise and functional training rooms at the Downtown Clubhouse and new fitness class offerings and times at both clubhouses. Even more exciting is

4 F Cherry Diamond F APR 2018

the plan to expand and renovate the fitness center at the West Clubhouse over the next several years. Did I mention our incredible certified fitness staff and registered dietitians? Not many places in town can compete with this lineup! F Athletics – Where else in the St. Louis region can you play for fun, take lessons or compete in basketball, swimming, diving, tennis, squash, racquetball, golf, pickleball and more? Again, the caliber of the professional staff offering private lessons, clinics and coaching is something to boast about. Furthermore, all these sports are available for a range of ages throughout the entire year! Please raise your hand if your country club provides all these sports … still waiting … anyone … thought so. F Facilities – Don’t forget about the ambiance. Not only is the Downtown Clubhouse beautiful with its ornate architecture, but it is also a St. Louis landmark that was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2007. Some of the biggest business deals in town have been negotiated here. Additionally, the MAC boasts more than 20 event spaces to host weddings, special events, company parties and fundraisers. Alyson and I hosted our wedding reception in the grand Missouri Ballroom and some milestone birthday celebrations in the 1903 bar. Both were very well-orchestrated and memorable events. Also, the West Clubhouse is a beacon for families, summer fun and afterwork food and drink. Few bars in St. Louis can compare to 1903, which has become a hot spot for adult socializing. F Events – Let’s try this again: Name another private club in the region that has large, fun events throughout the year (not just in the summer). I know one – the MAC! The MAC! Just to name a few, the MAC hosts: The President’s Foundations’ Ball, the Hermann Trophy Banquet, the College Basketball Awards dinner, the Jack Buck Sports Awards, Women of

Distinction Luncheon, Apollos events, Boxing Championships, Father/Daughter Dance, swim meets, election night, and the list goes on. Where else can you find these unique and prominent events? F Clubs Within the Club – If the Club-sponsored events, fitness classes and athletic programs mentioned above aren’t enough for your social calendar, then there is always an opportunity to get involved in more than 15 different special interest groups. The CWCs offer MAC members opportunities to socialize, travel and improve in sports, hobbies and other specific interest areas. They host wine dinners, whiskey tastings, concerts, speakers and friendly competition. If you’re looking for a closer connection to the Club, get involved with one of these smaller groups that aligns with your interests. F Fellowship – It’s all about the people. When my family joined the MAC, we knew a few members. Today, we are blessed to know so many more incredible members who we now call friends. The MAC is truly the Club for fun, fellowship and friendships. Take the time to connect with fellow members; you’ll be glad that you did. Even with the addition of four extra pages in this month’s issue of the Cherry Diamond, there is still not enough space to list all the incredible things I love about the Missouri Athletic Club. Take the time to review the details of the Cherry Diamond from the upcoming events, to the class offerings, to the stories about awesome members, and find the reasons YOU love the MAC. Have some FUN this spring!

from the general manager President Schoedel emailed this important message to the membership on March 1, and to emphasize its importance, I want to reiterate it here and share the renderings for Phase One. From President Schoedel: The MAC is always looking for ways to improve the already tremendous membership experience. After obtaining feedback from our members over the last several years, the Board of Governors and our staff have developed plans to improve our fitness facilities and activities at both clubhouses. In 2017, we completed improvements at the Downtown Clubhouse to create new multi-functional exercise rooms along with new fitness programs. Recently, the Board of Governors approved plans to also improve the fitness areas at the West Clubhouse. More definitive details will be communicated over the next several weeks, but here is a quick snapshot of the project: F Under a plan with two phases, existing fitness areas at the West Clubhouse will be upgraded with new equipment; the free-weight area will be expanded into the stadium racquetball court; racquetball courts will be repurposed into specialty exercise rooms; and remaining racquetball courts will be improved with new gathering areas and clear back walls. F The first phase will be broken into two parts: 1A and 1B. Phase 1A will begin in April 2018 (pending issuance of permits) and includes the demolition of the stadium

LOWER LEVEL

racquetball court to provide expanded space to the adjoining free-weight area. Phase 1B will include remodeling the current free-weight area, adding new bathrooms and upgrading the check-in desk. Phase 1A and 1B are projected to cost $528,200. F Phase 1 will be paid entirely with budgeted dollars from the Club’s current cash flow. No assessment or financing will be required. It is estimated that the project will be completed in less than 12 months. F Phase 2 was approved by the Board but additional review is needed to finalize the design and financing. The projected cost of Phase 2 is $2.21 million and would be paid for by cash flow from operations, financing, and donations. Phase 2 would not begin until fiscal year 2020. F Phase 2 designs include improvements to the existing cardio and fitness areas as well as adding specialty training rooms above the existing rooms. These mezzanine rooms will provide functional training in yoga, Pilates and cross-training. The addition of a golf simulator is under study. F Phase 2 will also improve corridors, entryways, lighting and fire suppression systems. Five racquetball courts will remain, but there are alternative design elements in Phase 2 that could reduce the number of

courts to three. A new racquetball gathering area will be created along with utilization of clear walls to provide spectator viewing. F Both phases will be delivered utilizing the design-build method. This approach will allow value engineering along the way, improves communication among the contractors, and will help in minimizing the time to produce these added benefits to the MAC. G.S.&S. Construction will be the construction manager and general contractor managing the bidding process for subcontractors with V3 Studios acting as the architect. Both have strong professional resumes and experience with prior improvements at the West Clubhouse. We are very excited to move this project forward. Together with the improvements at the Downtown Clubhouse, we are strengthening the “Athletic” in our middle name. We recognize that this project will impact our daily operations, and we will strive to minimize any inconvenience. We have phased the project purposefully so that we can stay in business and offer all our programming in and around the construction. However, we believe the short-term inconvenience will provide a tremendous long-term experience for our members.

from the communications department Imagine a world with no smart phones, social media, websites, video or emails. I challenged my pre-teen daughter to do this, and she looked at me like I was talking about something from the Paleozoic Era. I suspect most people under the age of 30 would have a similar reaction. That is what life was like when I began working at the Missouri Athletic Club more than two decades ago. Tucked away behind the Barbershop on 1M, our department has undergone a dramatic makeover. I’m not talking about the carpet and aesthetics of the office (those remain pretty much the same), but the type of work we do has transformed and continues to evolve. The department was originally named after the Club’s iconic monthly magazine. The Cherry Diamond, which began publishing at the inception of the MAC in 1903, was essentially the only vehicle for communicating to the entire membership. The Cherry Diamond Department that I first walked into in November of 1996 is now called the Marketing Communications Department to more accurately reflect the scope of work being done here.

Spurred primarily by advances in technology, a LOT has changed in how we now communicate. The MAC was one of the first private clubs to create a website in 1999. A few years later, email became a cost-effective way to deliver members the latest news through the Club’s two weekly e-newsletters. In 2009, the MAC made the leap into social media with the creation of Facebook and Twitter accounts. In the last few years, video has been increasingly incorporated into our communications strategy. Our communications efforts are not confined to the MAC membership. Our department also supports community outreach efforts through high-profile events like the Jack Buck Awards, Hermann Trophy, High School Soccer All-Star Games and the two new basketball events that have debuted this year – the Preseason College Basketball Tip-Off Luncheon and the USBWA College Basketball Awards. After more than a century, the Cherry Diamond remains an essential communication outlet for Club members. The rapid evolution in technology led some prognosticators to predict the demise of printed publications. While the magazine is now available online for those who prefer to read it in a digital format, the membership

survey results indicate that the printed Cherry Diamond is still the preferred communications source for most members. The increasing variety of communication outlets has not replaced the venerable Cherry Diamond, but served as a valuable supplement for members to stay connected to the Club. Our Communications Coordinator Emma Frey has been a key player in ensuring that the look and content of the magazine remain essential to the members. The viability of the magazine is not only measured by member response, but by advertisers who have been participating in increasing numbers over the last few years. In 2015, the Club launched a new website to better meet the needs of current and prospective members. Our Content Marketing Manager Amy Freeman did a tremendous job shepherding that project. Amy has some more exciting additions to our website on the horizon that she would like share with you in the space below. Stay connected to your Club!

In August 2015, the Missouri Athletic Club launched a new website through Clubessential, a leading provider of private-club technology. One of the reasons for selecting Clubessential as the Club’s website provider is their ability to offering online reservation systems for many services. The site launched with event, dining, court booking, and hotel room reservations. Since then, the Club has added fitness classes, personal training, massage therapy and barbershop and salon services. In addition to the growth of the website and its offerings, the MAC’s many programs, offerings and amenities continue to expand along with the need to communicate them.

Last year, we began to explore better ways to communicate these programs and offerings to the membership. We desired to find ways to add more web content for communication and search engine optimization purposes without making the user experience too complex. Also, we knew the site was dated in terms of design. It lacks responsiveness, which also penalizes our SEO. With these things in mind, we knew it was time for a site refresh. Since then, we’ve been working with Clubessential on a refreshed design that is responsive for an improved user experience and SEO and a modernized look and feel. Additionally, the menu navigation will transform from vertical dropdown menus to horizontal to allow for more pages to communicate the Club’s offerings without

making the menu too deep to navigate. The website buildout is complete, and Clubessential is currently loading content. Following an internal review and testing of the new site, we hope to launch it in May. Following the launch of the refreshed site, we plan to launch a new mobile application this summer to improve the mobile experience. We are very excited to continue to improve the MAC’s digital offerings and experience, and we hope these improvements will increase your engagement with the site and the MAC.

My favorite part of being an MAC member is the camaraderie - from the Jack Buck Grille, the Sportsman’s Club, 1903 Bar, and Stan Musial Grille, to the fitness and banquet facilities, to our many great club events. When traveling, I have enjoyed staying at the various reciprocal clubs and seeing some of the few things they have tried which we have not which could potentially benefit the MAC. As a CPA, my financial acumen can help the club as we continue to move further into our second century as a great asset to our members, the business community, and St. Louis as a whole, both at our downtown and west locations.

It is an honor to be nominated to run for our Club’s Board of Governors. I believe my entrepreneurial experiences coupled with my leadership positions on local not-for-profit boards make me uniquely qualified to join the MAC’s Board of Governors. If elected I would like to explore ways for our Club to become more active in philanthropic efforts in our community. I am proud to have introduced the MAC Hoops for Habitat through the Sports Foundation and believe there are additional opportunities for the MAC to collaborate with local not-for-profits. In addition, I would work to find ways to increase the engagement of our Associate members in Club governance. Ours is an evolving membership and I believe the MAC will be well served if more young members assume leadership positions on Committees as well as serve on the Board of Governors.

ILLINOIS INITIATIVE UPDATE By Patti Cundiff, Membership Senior Advisor

In the January issue of the Cherry Diamond, you may have read about the three important initiatives that kicked off at the beginning of the year. One of these was the Illinois Initiative that Carl Winters and I spearheaded. The main goal of the committee is to reach the untapped market across the river, especially those who reside in O’Fallon, Edwardsville and Belleville. This effort has been a strong focus for Carl Winters for some time and as a former Illinois resident, I realize the potential that Illinois offers in terms of prospective members. I can also attest to the fact that “crossing the river” is not like crossing the Sahara. Plans are in the works to host a happy hour reception at the Club for prospective members from Illinois. The goal is for our current Illinois resident members to invite a strong prospect to this gathering for an evening of shared camaraderie and an excellent MAC experience. Stay tuned for more information! Secondly, I will be attending the Southwestern Illinois Business Expo on May 2 in Fairview Heights with the hope of educating attendees on the platinum-level experience found at the Club. This event will bring together the brightest business leaders from the most dynamic companies throughout the region so this is an excellent opportunity for the MAC to shine. I would be remiss if I didn’t share the extraordinary members aboard our Illinois Initiative committee who provide insight into this endeavor. A special thank you to Bob Connors, Brent Kaniecki, Brian

PATTI CUNDIFF JOINS ILLINOIS INITIATIVE COMMITTEE MEMBERS (L-R) KRIS TURLEY, BRIAN ALBERT, RICH SAUGET, JR., CARL WINTERS, JOHN REICHERT AND JASON COOMER AT A MEETING IN LATE FEBRUARY.

Albert, CJ Baricevic, Dave Schrader, Dave Stukenberg, Jason Coomer, Jeff Moore, Jim Ryan, Julie Ahrling, Kris Turley, Mark Tampow, Matt Eversgerd, Rich Sauger, Jr., W. Brian Rodgers and Lisa York. Jason Coomer, Deputy Athletics Director at SIUE, is our most recent addition, and we are so happy to have him! He is an advocate of the Club in the Edwardsville area and has already connected us to key contacts there. Lisa York is another key committee member who continues to make fantastic strides in the O’Fallon area. We thank you all for your service and dedication. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to me at 314-539-4422 or pcundiff@mac-stl.org with any questions regarding this initiative or if you’d like to join the committee. Let’s rally together and make the MAC-Illinois connection happen!

Not All Back Pain Can Be Solved with Epidurals, Surgery, or Opioids! Back pain is one of the most common reasons for missed work. Approximately 80% of individuals will experience back issues during their life. Chances are you’ve experienced some sort of back pain in your life. Back pain can come from multiple structures in your body. Unfortunately, back pain can be similar in a variety of patients even though the source of pain may differ. Therefore it’s not always as simple as getting an epidural steroid injection. The term “sciatica” has come into broad usage to describe pain that radiates down

the posterior area of the leg. Epidurals specifically target a compressed or pinched nerve. Structures such as facet joints or sacroiliac joints may present with similar referred pain patterns. If one’s pain came from these structures, an epidural would not provide relief. We offer many treatments that may be better options instead of narcotics and spine surgery. These include simple low back joint injections and radiofrequency ablation (RFA). RFA is the denervation of the painful joints in your low back with results lasting six months to one year! This is a great option for patients who are not surgical candidates or want to avoid narcotics and/or surgery.

Our procedures are performed in the office with the same equipment used in hospitals and surgery centers. This means there are no hospital or surgery center fees, saving you time and money. We also offer sedation for our procedures for your comfort. Come see us for an evaluation of your pain! Our West County office is located in the same plaza as Rosalita’s. We also have two other convenient locations in St. Peters and Washington. Please visit www.PainManagementServices.net for more information. Feel free to say hello if you see me at the MAC! 2018 WOMEN OF DISTINCTION The Missouri Athletic Club is pleased to present Erin Joy as keynote speaker at this year’s Women of Distinction Luncheon. ERIN JOY, KEYNOTE SPEAKER AND FOUNDER OF BLACK DRESS PARTNERS Keynote speaker, Erin Joy, founder of the coaching and consulting company Black Dress Partners and creator of the Midwest Women Business Owners’ Conference, will speak about The Freedom of Flexibility. Too often, in business and in life, people are held back by self-imposed rigidity.

Erin will explore how flexibility in life and business has helped her and her clients achieve success and fulfillment. She will also address the freedom that comes from knowing what is nonnegotiable in life and business (vision, integrity, health, etc.). She will share about starting over in her career nine times, talk about why she believes life and business are ongoing conversations, and discuss her own non-negotiables and attitudes toward training a flexibility mindset. From navigating challenges to identifying opportunities inherent to change, Erin will explore how perception and resilience contribute to professional and personal triumphs. This do-not-miss event will empower individuals to release resistance to change and encourage them to leverage perception and flexibility for maximum return as a business owner, a corporate executive, and a human being.

Past President Kim Tucci will receive the 2018 Philanthropist of the Year award at the President’s Foundations’ Ball. This award is annually presented to a member who gives of time, talent and treasure in the St. Louis community and at the Missouri Athletic Club. His three-year Board term began in 1985 and ended with his presidency from 1987-88. From a philanthropic standpoint, he has been a leading force behind the MAC’s foundations and creating a culture of giving at the MAC. JARRAD BENTON AND JOHN REICHERT CELEBRATE THEIR SUCCESS.

THE POWER OF REHABILITATIVE MASSAGE: John Reichert’s Story THE PROBLEM: During a Swedish massage session with Jarrad Benton, member John Reichert reported having anterior (frontal) hip pain for the past two years. Jarrad, a medical massage-certified professional, shared with John the Missouri Athletic Club’s new rehabilitative massage package. John asked if he could use funds from his Health Savings Account, and after some quick research, the duo determined that that type of massage qualified for HSA reimbursement with a doctor’s prescription. THE DIAGNOSIS: John visited his podiatrist who diagnosed his pain as coming from a leg length discrepancy, and wrote him a prescription for the massage.

massage techniques including cupping therapy, pelvic stabilization techniques, myofascial release, neuromuscular therapy, and muscle energy techniques. He also developed a daily homecare plan specifically for John to utilize between sessions that included selfmassage techniques and stretches. MAC personal trainer Andrew Francis corrected John’s form during workouts and shared specific exercises to improve his gait. As a result, John’s hip elevation is gone as well as the pain in his anterior hip. He displays proper postural alignment and can walk with minimal pain. “I can walk, and I can run,” says John. “Jarrad told me he’d get me walking again, and he kept his word.”

To purchase a rehabilitative massage package or any other THE ASSESSMENT: To begin John’s treatment, Jarrad conducted massage, visit the MAC website and navigate to Wellness > Massage Therapy. an initial postural and orthopedic assessment to identify the type of injury and structures involved. The MAC ranked second in the annual North American Association of Club Athletic Directors (NACAD) Great Lakes Swim Contest with 535.2 miles logged, only 30 miles behind The Boulevard Club in Toronto. The swim contest encourages clubs to log miles with the goal of swimming the length of four of the five Great Lakes (1,138.65 miles) throughout February. Suffer From Allergies No More! It’s that time of year again. Spring is one of the most bothersome allergy seasons in the Saint Louis area. Many people know that as soon as the trees bloom, their eyes and nose are going to start acting up. They have tried over the counter medications, but what if that isn’t enough? Allergy shots are a great way to lessen or resolve allergy symptoms. Most people suffer with the same allergies year after year, or even worse, daily! Why depend on daily medication when you can have a better long term solution? Allergy shots are given over

a certain amount of time to teach a person’s immune system not to react to allergens. It’s a great way to treat the cause instead of treating the symptoms. Generally, it may take months to notice a difference with allergy shots but at Allergy and Asthma Consultants we provide faster methods to give you relief sooner! That means you are not too late to start this season! Everyone with allergy symptoms should see an allergist! Why? Because allergy testing is a key step to identifying your triggers. Knowing what your triggers are and how to avoid them or lessen them in your environment is extremely important. OF Artist THE Month

CATHRYNE LOOS

Cathryne Kulick Loos is an imaginative artist who loves to paint expressively. Her work is usually considered quite colorful while her style is often loosely realistic with an abstract presence. Cathryne’s main goal is to translate impressions of the world into beautiful paintings. Her painting style is built on traditional oil painting techniques coupled with contemporary painting methods. The artist likes to combine mediums in her search for interesting visual images. More than a decade ago she became intrigued by painting with melted wax (encaustic). She was drawn to the scent of hot beeswax, its luminosity, and range of textures and dimensions. Cathryne adapts the ancient process of encaustic painting used by Greeks and Egyptians. The word encaustic means “to burn in.” She lays numerous layers of hot wax and pigment (color) onto a board support. Each layer is fused with a torch and/or electrical heating equipment to the layer below. Paper and metal leaf can be collaged to the surface, and areas of wax are scratched and filled with color. She often uses a method of burning shellac into her paintings, resulting in interesting filigree patterns. Cathryne is a member of International Encaustic Artists. Her work has been exhibited both locally and internationally, including Lyons, France; Tuscany, Italy, and two locations in Taiwan. To purchase any art on display, contact Janet Jones at extension 7430 or email jjones@mac-stl.org. Cherry Diamond F APR 2018 F 33

MAC’s Glee Club rehearsed every Wednesday night at 6 p.m. until 1943 when it officially changed names to the MAC Apollo Club and began rehearsing every Monday night. The Apollos’ first two concerts were held in July and December 1944. Now, the Club Within the Club hosts concerts in April and November and performs an additional

Christmas program at various nursing homes in the St. Louis area. Over the years, the Apollos have participated in the Breakfast with Santa and Easter Brunch events. Register to attend the Apollos’ 75th anniversary celebration on April 27 and honor the oldest singing group west of the Mississippi!

HAPPY
