Diamond Digits F
A few months back, we asked MAC members for their thoughts on the Cherry Diamond and other Club communications. Here’s what we found out: F When it comes to print vs. digital, print still wins out (77%); however about 17% read it both online and in print. F About half of members spend 10-30 minutes reading an issue, and 34% spend 30 minutes to an hour. F 75% off issues are read by two or more people. F The most-read sections of the magazine are: 1) Calendar of Events 3) Photos from recent events 2) Dining 4) President and GM columns Your ongoing feedback helps us improve and ensures we continue to provide communications that meet your needs. You’ll notice a new look in this issue – a more sturdy cover, more photos throughout to highlight all our great members, a cleaner modern layout and some new departments. Nothing too drastic – but hopefully changes that better reflect the image of the MAC today and in the future. Let us know what you think. – Becky Rasmussen, Managing Editor, brasmussen@mac-stl.org Cherry Diamond F AUGUST 2014 F 1

PRESIDENT’S COLUMN
»
As I write this, I cannot believe the calendar will soon be turning to August. Summer is beginning to wind down and before you know it, the kids are returning to school. This summer saw record participation in the Penguins Swim and Dive Team and the Puffins pre-team. The end of year swim team party was held July 14, with more than 300 people in attendance. Turnout also has been great for our youth sports camps, including Camp MAC and the new Preschool Camp MAC. There are still plenty of opportunities to enjoy late summer fun at the Club including the Dive-in Movie on Aug. 15, the Adult Pool Party on Aug. 16 and the Back-to-School Happy Hour on Aug. 23. Also, mark your calendars for Family Fun Day at West on Sept. 6. August also includes the Annual Golf Classic, which will be held Aug. 25 at Glen Echo. This will be a great event and actually sold out earlier this summer. This year, the Classic will benefit not only the MAC Preservation Foundation (80%), but also the MAC Sports Foundation (10%) and Foundation for the Arts (10%), so thank you to all our registrants for stepping up to the plate to support these efforts. Dinner reservations and donations of silent auction items are still being accepted – contact Katie Maurer at 314-539-4402. A big thank you to past president Scott Engelbrecht for leading a great team in putting this event together. With September coming soon, the return of football is just around the corner, and hopefully all our MAC Rams fans took advantage of the member discount on single-game tickets and season parking passes. Located just steps from the Edward Jones Dome, our Downtown Clubhouse is right in the heart of Rams territory. Bring your friends and family
to the Club before and after each home game to participate in the game-day festivities. On the business side of things, the MAC fiscal year ends Aug. 31, and we anticipate a strong fourth-quarter finish. The third-quarter financial report is now available, and the results can be found on page 7. On the capital improvement front, all projects slated for 2013-2014 are completed. These include the hotel renovations, new member/security desk, new pool furniture, squash court refinishing, pool fencing and most recently – the renovated West tennis court pavilions. A ribbon-cutting for the newly resurfaced courts was held July 5 in conjunction with the 2nd Annual Breakfast at Wimbledon event. As I write this, the budget process for 2014-2015 is in its final stages. The new budget will include some new capital improvement projects to further the member experience. Additionally, we have our Long Range Planning team working with staff to strategize and set a game plan for future year projects that will be impactful for the membership. The Board and Long Range Planning team feel strongly that our goals and objectives need to be built around member recruitment and current member satisfaction and retention. Decisions will be made with those two things in mind. Finally, my wife Erica and I had the privilege to attend the 50 Year member dinner. This is an event that recognizes those members who have been members at the MAC for at least 50 years. I was surprised to learn we have over 60 members who have been here for 50-60 years, another 40 members who have been here for 60-70 years and our longest tenured member is Frank Guyol who has been a member for 72 years! After visiting with many of these members, it was evident how important the MAC is for these people. It was an honor to be with them for this event and also motivation to help the MAC continue to be successful in future years. Thanks to all the great members we have at the MAC and see you around the Club.

GENERAL MANAGER’S COLUMN
As I sit down to write this, I’ve just returned from the annual meeting of City Athletic Club Managers, which means my brain is buzzing with ideas. (Just ask the staff!) This year’s event was hosted by the Union League of Philadelphia, a 152-year-old institution considered by most to be the best city club in the nation. From the outside it’s easy to see why – a booming membership, top-notch facilities, unique amenities, best-inclass service and a healthy financial outlook. The club is also continually adding to its reputation, from opening a restaurant for second-home members on the Jersey shore to acquiring a new golf course. But what might not be so obvious – and what really caught my eye – is how much of their success in recent years can be attributed to the work of the club’s foundations. Just like the MAC, the Union League has three charitable foundations, and while their scope may be different from ours, they still represent a great model for where we’re trying to head. By cultivating strong foundations, the Union League now has a sustain-
»
able base for ongoing investment in the organization. For example, the League’s Abraham Lincoln Foundation not only acquires and maintains a priceless collection of Lincoln and Civil War art and artifacts, it also established an impressive museum within the club to share this work with members, researchers and the community. (Sound somewhat familiar to the work of the MAC Art Foundation?) Investing in our Foundations isn’t about planning for the coming year, or even the next five; it is key to the Club’s success for the next generation. To this end, we have charged the boards of our Preservation Foundation, Sports Foundation and Art Foundation with thinking long-term to cultivate a sustainable supporter base. We’re excited about the people we have leading these efforts and look forward to exploring the possibilities, such as planned giving options and a new Gala format. We already knew we were headed in the right direction, but seeing what can be accomplished from an organization that’s a little further along in the process was a great inspiration. Getting away and having the opportunity to connect with industry members is always valuable, but it also makes you all the more energized to get back to work. This is especially true as we wrap up our budgeting and planning process for the coming fiscal year. Our new committees have been formed, and they didn’t waste any time in getting started. I’m particularly looking forward to working with our new Membership Committee – it’s a committed and connected group that
truly represents all the different facets of the MAC. We know the Club has plenty to offer candidates, and our past Membership Committee and staff have proven they can make the connections, as we added more than 500 new members over the past two years. While the new Committee will keep this momentum going, it also has identified membership retention as a top priority in light of the fact that we have lost approximately 440 members in that same time period. Members resign for a variety of reasons out of our control, but we also know that member engagement is the primary factor driving retention. Getting new members plugged into the Club from day one not only ensures they remain as long-term active members like those in our 50+ year club, it also makes for a more vibrant and healthy MAC. Finally, I’m sure you’ve noticed the new look and feel of this issue. On page 1, we highlight the results of our recent member survey driving these changes. As our Club continues to grow and evolve, it’s important that our communications continue to reflect our image while meeting the needs of members. It’s not always easy to keep a 110-year-old publication looking fresh, but I think we hit the mark on this one and hope you enjoy it. See you at the Club,
Wally Smith, General Manager Missouri Athletic Club

Summer on the Court The MAC’s Youth Tennis program has been buzzing this summer as kids have been flocking to play on the newly resurfaced courts. In addition to camps and clinics throughout the summer, several players have taken advantage of a great Junior Team Tennis (JTT) package opportunity offered by the MAC that includes practices and team match play. JTT is a youth tennis program organized by the USTA where local clubs create junior teams based on age. This summer the MAC offered teams and organized team practices for the 10U, 12U and 14U divisions. Players compete in a series of singles, doubles and mixed doubles matches, culminating with the best teams qualifying for the district championships at the end of the season. The MAC’s 12U Advanced team has been a standout team as they go into their last match of the season with an undefeated record. The program has been very instrumental in teaching the club’s young members how to be independent, cooperative and competitive on the tennis court while instilling a fun atmosphere for parents, players and coaches. “It’s amazing how much Gen has improved and understand the game since playing on the Junior Tennis Team,” commented Victoria Harrison. For more information on how you can get your child involved in the Junior Tennis program at the MAC, please contact Director of Junior Tennis Kenny Powell at kpowell@mac-stl.org or 314-539-4413.

Court Renovations Unveiled Of all the capital improvements and renovations tackled over the past year, the West Tennis Courts might be one of the most visible to members and guests. The first change that jumps out is the distinctive blue and green, matching the color scheme of the U.S. Open. The colors weren’t chosen arbitrarily, as testing has shown that blue courts improve ball visibility for both players and spectators and more facilities are making the switch. The renovation went beyond mere cosmetic changes, however, leveling out the floor to eliminate rises and dips, resurfacing all eight courts and improving the pavilion lighting. New 60’ court lines were added as part of the USTA Quick Start program, which the MAC pros use to help junior players get started out on the right track. Come check out the new courts for yourself – call 314-539-4444 to book court time or visit the MAC website for a complete list of adult and junior tennis programs.
The morning started out with a hot breakfast, followed by tournament viewing, discussion and matches.
Breakfast at Wimbledon
Tennis enthusiasts gathered at the West Clubhouse on July 5 for the second annual MAC Breakfast at Wimbledon event. While watching coverage of the Ladies’ Singles Finals taking place in London, attendees enjoyed a breakfast buffet, including the Wimbledon tradition of strawberries and cream. MAC Tennis Director Kim Steinmetz and eight-time competitor provided guests with a behind-the-scenes look at the oldest tennis tournament in the world, sharing memories from her Wimbledon days. After cutting the ceremonial ribbon, players paired off and took to the newly renovated courts for a mixed doubles round robin.

There were no lazy days of summer at the MAC, as members and families kept busy throughout June and July with summer camps, swim meets, 4th of July celebrations, poolside parties, Dive-in Movies and much more!
4th of July This year, Fair St. Louis moved to Forest Park, and the MAC was right there too, with a float in the VP Parade and special breakfast and seating area for MAC members. More than 300 members and guests turned out for the parade and celebration, and were rewarded with gorgeous weather and a fun time. Other members opted for a more low-key celebration, with a pool party at West.
Summer Fun Summer Camps Once again, the MAC offered one of the most active summer youth programs in town, with camps for nearly every sport imaginable. Led by an experienced and enthusiastic staff of counselors and coaches, campers learned the fundamentals of new sports, improved their skills and gained valuable lessons in sportsmanship. In addition to the regular Camp MAC offered throughout the summer, the new Preschool Camp MAC offered lots of fun for the 3to -5-year-old set, capping off the week with a visit from the local fire department and EMS crews.

Choosing the School that Fits Your Family Public, private, parochial, independent, charter, magnet, online, homeschooling – the variety of educational opportunities available to students and parents has never been greater. This can also make the decision that much more challenging, as parents struggle to choose the right fit for their child. This is particularly true in St. Louis, where outside of the regular public school system, school choice may include 21 charter options and more than 400 private schools, both parochial and secular. While location or proximity may be the determining factor for some, more often families spend significant time researching and comparing options on the basis of factors including academics, educational philosophy, faculty, extracurricular activities, facilities, performance, class size, tuition, admission requirements and more. Jamie Driver, the new Executive Director of Independent Schools of St. Louis (ISSL), is eager to spread the words about the benefits of an independent education. “ISSL member schools are characterized by a number of unique attributes that translate into a wide array of offerings for families,” Driver says. “Our schools’ small class sizes, high academic standards, inclusiveness, excellent faculty and staff and active parental involvement allow for each student’s intellectual, social and emotional needs to be met,” she says. In total, the 45 ISSL member school serve more than 17,000 students annually in grades Pre-K to 12; more information can be obtained on ISSL at www.independentschools.org. Regardless of the type of school you ultimately choose for your child, there are several steps you can take to make the most of the process.

1) Determine what’s most important to your child and your family. Before you even begin your research, it’s helpful to have your priorities in mind. This will allow you to easily weed out those options that would not be a good fit and ask the right questions when you visit. During the course of the process, your list may change, but it’s good to have a starting point to guide your research. Remember, you are looking for
a school that will make the educational experience for your child and you as rewarding as possible, and you know your child best. 2) Research your options. Collect materials, make phone calls, look for reports or news, talk to past or current students. Besides the school’s own website, great online starting points include www.greatschools.net and www.school-
matters.org. This research will help you determine how well the school matches up against your required criteria and allow you to make an educated list of questions for when you visit. 3) Take time to visit and observe the school. While open houses and informational nights can be a great resource, sometimes the best way to get a feel for a school is through a visit during

Around Town with the Forever Young Club June 25 was a bright, sunny day for the Forever Young Club’s visit to the new Civil War Museum at Jefferson Barracks. A quick ride south from the West Clubhouse brought us to a perfectly restored 1905 red brick structure that once served as the Post Exchange and gymnasium for Jefferson Barracks Army Post, established in 1826. Today, the museum holds hundreds of handsomely displayed artifacts that focus on the American Civil War in Missouri. Munitions, battle-torn flags, period uniforms, soldier gear, cannon and displays depicting the hardships of civilian life during the conflict impressed upon us the divisiveness of that era. A video presented scenes depicting
Honoring WWII Vets At their May meeting, the Forever Young Club welcomed three World War II veterans – Al Villagran, Ralph Covinski and MAC member Robert Harper – to share their wartime experiences in honor of the 69th anniversary of the end of the war. The speakers were B-17 crew members, each completing 35 missions over Nazi Germany. the many Civil War engagements across the state of Missouri. Outside, we saw the Old Post parade field and learned that the very first aviation parachute landing was made there in 1912. As we moved on to tour Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery, we were impressed with the meticulous care that has been taken to make this site a beautiful and majestic resting place for our nation’s veterans from all wars. Ask us why the gravestones of Confederate soldiers are pointed while all others are rounded. All MAC members are welcome to join FYC, visit our monthly luncheons on the third Friday of each month and take part in our trips and other activities.

What’s the MAC-American Legion Connection? American Legion Post #4 celebrated its 95th anniversary at the MAC in June.
Did you know that American Legion, Gunnery Sergeant Fred W. Stockham – St. Louis Post #4 has met at the MAC for many years? Ever wondered about the connection between the two? The MAC and The American Legion grew up together. The club was just 16 when the now 3 million member American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919. The Legion advocates patriotism and support for active service members and veterans. A 1919 caucus of WWI veterans in Paris led to a May caucus in St. Louis. Leaders of the soon-to-be American Legion headquartered in the MAC building to organize the national meeting that brought the Legion into being a few days later at the old Shubert Theater. Notably, the first four posts were from Missouri; three from St. Louis and one from Kansas City. As the fourth post to be chartered following the St. Louis Caucus, Post #4 is proud of its history. In June, the post celebrated its 95th anniver-
sary with a “why wait until 100” attitude. Three large photographs of the Paris and St. Louis Caucuses hang on the walls of the fourth floor Veterans Room as well as a painting of WWI Marine hero Fred W. Stockham. During a mustard gas attack, Stockham removed his own protective mask and placed it on Barak T. Mattingly, a prominent St. Louis lawyer, saving Mattingly and condemning Stockham to death. For his action, he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. Notable St. Louisans who have served as Post #4 Commanders include Dwight F. Davis, Sr. (tennis), Barak T. Mattingly (law), Donald L. Carpenter (state representative) and Milton Carpenter (Director, MO Dept. of Revenue), plus a host of MAC members. The Veterans Room is also where Post #4 meets for a lunch program on Fridays. Look in the Downtown Clubhouse for a poster announcing the weekly speaker. And now you know the connection…
